[00:00:22] [SPEAKER_00]: Hello and welcome. I'm not even gonna try to do a stupid intro here because this is a
[00:00:26] [SPEAKER_00]: big episode for us. I'm Griffin Newman. I'm David Sim. Let's clear our throat. I feel
[00:00:31] [SPEAKER_00]: like that's an NPR thing to do. I don't know. Yeah. This is episode nine of Griffin and
[00:00:38] [SPEAKER_00]: David Present, Revenge Of The Podcast. Hello! Hi. This is a mini series investigation
[00:00:44] [SPEAKER_00]: we've been doing into the third and final film in the Phantom Menace trilogy. It's
[00:00:51] [SPEAKER_00]: a series of investigations. We started out watching... There's a lot of string on our
[00:00:55] [SPEAKER_00]: poster board. This is, yes. It has driven us a little bit mad, a little up the wall. A
[00:01:00] [SPEAKER_00]: little bit mad. More than a little mad, thoroughly mad. We started out investigating Star Wars
[00:01:06] [SPEAKER_00]: Episode I The Phantom Menace, trying to figure out what that movie was about. Yeah. After
[00:01:09] [SPEAKER_00]: about two and a half months of work on that, we moved on to Attack The Clones, episode
[00:01:14] [SPEAKER_00]: two. Tried to figure out if that was a good sequel. Right, I guess so. It's not. It's not.
[00:01:20] [SPEAKER_00]: That was easier to figure out. Very easy. We figured that out pretty much minute one
[00:01:24] [SPEAKER_00]: of the first episodes. No. We went on to a third mini series podcast, Revenge Of The
[00:01:29] [SPEAKER_00]: Podcast, what you're listening to right now, trying to figure out what was this larger
[00:01:32] [SPEAKER_00]: story? Three films. Right, right. Classical story structure. Three films. You completed
[00:01:36] [SPEAKER_00]: your saga. The trilogy. What was trying to be said. And the through line amongst
[00:01:41] [SPEAKER_00]: all these was, we weren't just looking at the text. We weren't just looking at the material.
[00:01:46] [SPEAKER_00]: We were trying to figure out what the intention was of the filmmaker behind these works. Wow.
[00:01:52] [SPEAKER_00]: A director, a writer. If only we could get him in studio. Self-finance. Now, David's
[00:01:57] [SPEAKER_00]: being a little cheeky here. I'm being cheeky. Because a couple months ago. Doing a bit.
[00:02:02] [SPEAKER_00]: I threw out on the show. Unlike me. No bits. No bits. That, of course, is a producer
[00:02:06] [SPEAKER_00]: Ben, aka Purdue Ben, aka the Ben Deucer, aka the Haas, aka Hello Fennel, aka Mr. Positive.
[00:02:12] [SPEAKER_00]: You forget the poet laureate. I was getting to it next. I know I forgot it last week. I
[00:02:15] [SPEAKER_00]: know and I was really, really upset about that. Yeah. Aka the poet laureate, aka the peeper,
[00:02:20] [SPEAKER_00]: aka producer Ben Kenobi. That's a new one that was dubbed by our guest today because
[00:02:26] [SPEAKER_00]: our guest is someone we threw out an invitation. If he was listening, if he was out there,
[00:02:29] [SPEAKER_00]: if he wanted to come defend himself, our door was open as always. And today,
[00:02:34] [SPEAKER_00]: I can't believe I'm saying this. I'm looking at him right now in the eyes and this really is
[00:02:37] [SPEAKER_00]: the real guy because I certainly, we got the email. I thought it might be...
[00:02:40] [SPEAKER_03]: This is the guy who does a monthly show at the UCB. Yes. Talk show. Yeah. And directed,
[00:02:47] [SPEAKER_03]: I don't know, four of the most successful films ever made? Yeah.
[00:02:51] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm including American Graffiti. Yeah. Congratulations on that by the way.
[00:02:55] [SPEAKER_01]: That would be five of the most successful films ever made then.
[00:02:58] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm a little confused but we'll get to that. We'll talk about that later in my whole.
[00:03:03] [SPEAKER_00]: What's the next?
[00:03:04] [SPEAKER_00]: Okay, well let's get the introduction over with. Okay, so Ladies and Gentlemen,
[00:03:08] [SPEAKER_00]: nominated for I believe three Academy Awards. Four Academy Awards.
[00:03:13] [SPEAKER_00]: And he won the Thalberg, I think.
[00:03:14] [SPEAKER_00]: Creator of two massive franchises, Indiana Jones and the Phantom Menace.
[00:03:19] [SPEAKER_00]: Ladies and gentlemen, it is my honor to introduce George Lucas into the studio.
[00:03:24] [SPEAKER_00]: Georgey Porgy Lucas. Yeah.
[00:03:26] [SPEAKER_01]: Georgey Porgy putting in pie.
[00:03:27] [SPEAKER_00]: Yep. So first off, I feel like some apologies are in order.
[00:03:32] [SPEAKER_01]: Have you listened?
[00:03:33] [SPEAKER_01]: I've heard bits. I have hundreds of songs on my iPod. I don't have a lot of room for podcasts.
[00:03:40] [SPEAKER_01]: Hundreds?
[00:03:41] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I have over 200 songs on my iPod.
[00:03:43] [SPEAKER_00]: Wow. Okay, I want to be focused in this interview because this is a real serious
[00:03:47] [SPEAKER_00]: journalistic opportunity but we have to ask about the little sidebar.
[00:03:50] [SPEAKER_00]: We got a lot of serious questions about a little sidebar.
[00:03:53] [SPEAKER_00]: What kind of music do you listen to?
[00:03:55] [SPEAKER_01]: Well, I mean that question was answered in cinemas this year.
[00:03:59] [SPEAKER_01]: You went and saw the motion picture Strange Magic?
[00:04:01] [SPEAKER_00]: Oh, I did see that.
[00:04:02] [SPEAKER_01]: The inspiration for sort of the rethinking of that movie was that I had over 200 songs on my iPod.
[00:04:11] [SPEAKER_01]: That's true.
[00:04:14] [SPEAKER_00]: 200 on a device that holds 1000.
[00:04:17] [SPEAKER_00]: I mean the first iteration was 1000. The bragging right that was 15 years ago.
[00:04:21] [SPEAKER_03]: Let me see how many.
[00:04:22] [SPEAKER_00]: 15 years ago, the first iteration it was a breakthrough that it could hold 1000.
[00:04:26] [SPEAKER_00]: I'm telling you how many I had.
[00:04:28] [SPEAKER_00]: 200. Okay, so you have focused taste.
[00:04:32] [SPEAKER_01]: You'll hear some of the examples on the Strange Magic soundtrack versions of
[00:04:38] [SPEAKER_01]: we were looking at the script at a certain point when it was still a story form, treatment form.
[00:04:44] [SPEAKER_00]: And for those listeners who don't know Strange Magic was an animated film that was released
[00:04:47] [SPEAKER_00]: this January.
[00:04:48] [SPEAKER_01]: A Broke Records, Broke Box Office Records earlier.
[00:04:51] [SPEAKER_01]: I think it had the...
[00:04:53] [SPEAKER_01]: It was the lowest per screen, no it was the lowest grossing animated film to be released on 3000 screens.
[00:05:02] [SPEAKER_00]: So you beat Delgo.
[00:05:03] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, because Delgo was only released on like 1800s screen.
[00:05:06] [SPEAKER_00]: Delgo didn't go as wide.
[00:05:08] [SPEAKER_01]: All I know is it broke box office records and that's true.
[00:05:11] [SPEAKER_01]: It did. Yeah, that is true.
[00:05:13] [SPEAKER_03]: So I remember...
[00:05:14] [SPEAKER_03]: Another notch, do you have a series of notches?
[00:05:17] [SPEAKER_01]: Well, I'd already...
[00:05:18] [SPEAKER_01]: You know, like it's easy to be the number one movie of all time if you want to.
[00:05:22] [SPEAKER_01]: You can do that.
[00:05:23] [SPEAKER_01]: You can break big records.
[00:05:24] [SPEAKER_01]: It's also fair to go the other direction and break records at the bottom.
[00:05:30] [SPEAKER_03]: They all get in the books.
[00:05:31] [SPEAKER_03]: That's an interesting...
[00:05:31] [SPEAKER_01]: Still breaking records.
[00:05:32] [SPEAKER_01]: You're still making history, cinema history.
[00:05:35] [SPEAKER_00]: So I saw that film in theaters.
[00:05:37] [SPEAKER_00]: Did you?
[00:05:38] [SPEAKER_00]: I did.
[00:05:39] [SPEAKER_00]: I remember it had...
[00:05:41] [SPEAKER_00]: It was sort of a jukebox musical starring Ferris and Goblins.
[00:05:44] [SPEAKER_00]: About Ferris who live in the woods.
[00:05:45] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[00:05:45] [SPEAKER_00]: I don't think I knew that it had this jukebox musical element to it.
[00:05:48] [SPEAKER_00]: Oh yeah, very much so.
[00:05:49] [SPEAKER_00]: Okay, all right.
[00:05:50] [SPEAKER_00]: I remember it mostly comprising of pop songs from the last seven or eight years.
[00:05:55] [SPEAKER_00]: No, there's Burt Backrack songs there.
[00:05:57] [SPEAKER_00]: Oh, that's true.
[00:05:58] [SPEAKER_00]: There were some recent stuff too.
[00:05:59] [SPEAKER_00]: What are some songs?
[00:06:00] [SPEAKER_00]: Like what are...
[00:06:01] [SPEAKER_01]: I'll Never Fall in Love Again by Burt Backrack and Hal David.
[00:06:03] [SPEAKER_01]: Lovely song.
[00:06:05] [SPEAKER_01]: I'll tell you, this is a little bit of news that most people don't know.
[00:06:07] [SPEAKER_01]: One of the original songs that I first proposed for when I was pitching the idea saying
[00:06:14] [SPEAKER_01]: what if they sing, I had the songs in my iPod was the song we built this city on Rock and Roll.
[00:06:20] [SPEAKER_01]: And was that in the film?
[00:06:21] [SPEAKER_01]: No, it didn't make the cut but that is truly...
[00:06:23] [SPEAKER_01]: That is for real.
[00:06:25] [SPEAKER_01]: For real one of the first songs that I mentioned when I was talking to some people about it.
[00:06:30] [SPEAKER_00]: And that's the fairy city built out of flowers.
[00:06:32] [SPEAKER_00]: They would be...
[00:06:33] [SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
[00:06:33] [SPEAKER_00]: I guess that's why it didn't make the cut.
[00:06:35] [SPEAKER_01]: It didn't make sense.
[00:06:36] [SPEAKER_00]: Unforgettable by Beyonce I think was in that, right?
[00:06:38] [SPEAKER_01]: There's a little hint toward Lady Gaga Bad Romance.
[00:06:43] [SPEAKER_00]: Oh right, that's right.
[00:06:44] [SPEAKER_00]: There's a part where a goblin army all chants...
[00:06:49] [SPEAKER_01]: Anyway, now available on DVD, not Blu-ray.
[00:06:51] [SPEAKER_00]: It's not available on Blu-ray?
[00:06:53] [SPEAKER_01]: High definition download or DVD.
[00:06:56] [SPEAKER_01]: But there's no...
[00:06:57] [SPEAKER_01]: No Blu-ray.
[00:06:58] [SPEAKER_00]: For us physical media fans there's no hard copy...
[00:07:00] [SPEAKER_00]: Do you have a problem with Blu-ray?
[00:07:01] [SPEAKER_01]: Because I own the Star Wars films on Blu-ray.
[00:07:03] [SPEAKER_01]: Just some films come out on Blu-ray.
[00:07:05] [SPEAKER_01]: Some films don't.
[00:07:06] [SPEAKER_00]: I think almost all at this point.
[00:07:08] [SPEAKER_00]: I mean even very small...
[00:07:10] [SPEAKER_00]: Looks like we've broken another record.
[00:07:11] [SPEAKER_00]: I feel like I'm bringing some past sort of anger into this.
[00:07:16] [SPEAKER_00]: I'm not trying to...
[00:07:17] [SPEAKER_00]: I'm trying to give you a platform to defend your work.
[00:07:19] [SPEAKER_03]: We have George Lucas on the show.
[00:07:21] [SPEAKER_00]: We have George Lucas on the show.
[00:07:22] [SPEAKER_00]: This is a huge opportunity.
[00:07:23] [SPEAKER_00]: This is what we wanted the whole time.
[00:07:24] [SPEAKER_00]: We're trying to make sense of these films.
[00:07:26] [SPEAKER_00]: That's what we're doing.
[00:07:26] [SPEAKER_00]: And we sort of view ourselves as pop culture investigators, detectives.
[00:07:32] [SPEAKER_00]: I guess so.
[00:07:32] [SPEAKER_00]: Maybe.
[00:07:33] [SPEAKER_00]: I'm just the kind of weird man.
[00:07:33] [SPEAKER_01]: One could say that's a better branding look.
[00:07:35] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm here to answer any questions you have.
[00:07:38] [SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
[00:07:39] [SPEAKER_01]: Obviously these are...
[00:07:40] [SPEAKER_01]: This is the story I wanted to tell.
[00:07:42] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[00:07:45] [SPEAKER_00]: Well let's get on to that.
[00:07:46] [SPEAKER_00]: So Phantom Mass comes out in 1999.
[00:07:48] [SPEAKER_01]: That's right.
[00:07:49] [SPEAKER_01]: Great year for movies.
[00:07:50] [SPEAKER_00]: It was a banner year for American cinema.
[00:07:53] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[00:07:53] [SPEAKER_01]: I don't know what else came out.
[00:07:55] [SPEAKER_00]: A lot of stuff.
[00:07:56] [SPEAKER_00]: I mean...
[00:07:57] [SPEAKER_00]: But so you're saying just on the basis of Phantom Mass alone it was a great year for me.
[00:08:00] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I don't remember what else came out but I know it was a great year.
[00:08:02] [SPEAKER_00]: That was definitely...
[00:08:02] [SPEAKER_00]: I mean that was the number one box office film of that year.
[00:08:04] [SPEAKER_00]: I know Toy Story 2, my favorite movie of all time came in that year.
[00:08:08] [SPEAKER_00]: Pixar.
[00:08:09] [SPEAKER_00]: Oh you founded Pixar.
[00:08:11] [SPEAKER_01]: Or you didn't found it but you owned it for a while.
[00:08:15] [SPEAKER_01]: I owned it and then it was bought from me but...
[00:08:17] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah you sold Steve Jobs.
[00:08:19] [SPEAKER_00]: Okay we gotta talk about the Star Wars movies but not at their quick side.
[00:08:22] [SPEAKER_00]: I can't help it if I point out...
[00:08:24] [SPEAKER_00]: No because I mean I want to stay focused because this is what this podcast is about.
[00:08:27] [SPEAKER_03]: And they did the stained glass man in Young Sherlock Holmes.
[00:08:31] [SPEAKER_03]: Young Sherlock Holmes, right?
[00:08:31] [SPEAKER_03]: Which I misidentified as being from young Indiana Jones.
[00:08:34] [SPEAKER_03]: Which was also George Lucas production.
[00:08:37] [SPEAKER_00]: Pixar, you buy it.
[00:08:39] [SPEAKER_00]: At the time they have I think three animators on staff.
[00:08:42] [SPEAKER_00]: John Lasseter, Andrew Stanton and Pete Docter.
[00:08:47] [SPEAKER_00]: All three of whom have gone on to win Academy Awards.
[00:08:50] [SPEAKER_00]: You after a couple years sell the company because it is losing money and you don't see a reality
[00:08:55] [SPEAKER_00]: which will ever turn a profit.
[00:08:57] [SPEAKER_01]: Sure, I mean that's one way to spin it.
[00:09:00] [SPEAKER_01]: I believe that...
[00:09:01] [SPEAKER_01]: I still get credit for it, you know?
[00:09:02] [SPEAKER_00]: Well my question is does it burn at all?
[00:09:05] [SPEAKER_00]: You're a man of tremendous success.
[00:09:08] [SPEAKER_00]: You've broken records in both directions.
[00:09:10] [SPEAKER_00]: Do you look at Pixar the most consistently successful movie studio in history arguably?
[00:09:15] [SPEAKER_01]: Hey I still ended up getting all that money.
[00:09:18] [SPEAKER_01]: From when you sold it?
[00:09:19] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, no in the end the money came back to me in the end.
[00:09:22] [SPEAKER_01]: Pixar goes on to make all that money for Disney and then I end up getting that Disney money.
[00:09:26] [SPEAKER_03]: That's a good point.
[00:09:26] [SPEAKER_01]: Money always comes back to George.
[00:09:28] [SPEAKER_03]: Look is that your catchphrase?
[00:09:30] [SPEAKER_03]: No that's not a catchphrase.
[00:09:31] [SPEAKER_03]: True facts.
[00:09:32] [SPEAKER_03]: I did see on Wikipedia it says that you presented them a Golden Lion for lifetime achievement
[00:09:37] [SPEAKER_03]: at the Venice Film Festival.
[00:09:39] [SPEAKER_03]: That was fun, Venice is great.
[00:09:40] [SPEAKER_03]: So sounds like no sour grapes.
[00:09:42] [SPEAKER_00]: You're city of canals.
[00:09:43] [SPEAKER_01]: You don't look at them as the one that got away?
[00:09:44] [SPEAKER_01]: No not at all because I got away with their money in the end.
[00:09:47] [SPEAKER_01]: Like the money came back to Georgie.
[00:09:49] [SPEAKER_01]: Okay so let's talk about money a little bit.
[00:09:50] [SPEAKER_00]: So you sell finance Star Wars Episode 1 The Phantom Menace.
[00:09:54] [SPEAKER_01]: That's right it's an indie film.
[00:09:55] [SPEAKER_01]: All three of the Star Wars prequels that we're talking about here those are indie films.
[00:09:58] [SPEAKER_01]: And that's what really...
[00:10:01] [SPEAKER_03]: They're the biggest indie films.
[00:10:03] [SPEAKER_01]: It's another record.
[00:10:04] [SPEAKER_01]: I don't think anyone's ever gonna top that for indie films.
[00:10:05] [SPEAKER_01]: I don't think anyone's ever gonna make three bigger indie films than prequels.
[00:10:10] [SPEAKER_00]: No and you raise a good point which is when I think about the things I love
[00:10:12] [SPEAKER_00]: about independent film size is definitely top of the list.
[00:10:16] [SPEAKER_01]: Well people also went to see them.
[00:10:18] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah yeah no they were as I said...
[00:10:20] [SPEAKER_00]: They were all huge hits.
[00:10:21] [SPEAKER_01]: Huge hits.
[00:10:22] [SPEAKER_03]: I read the AV club this week they got a big article about how great they are.
[00:10:25] [SPEAKER_03]: They do saying that they are almost undervalued.
[00:10:27] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah I gotta say that article barely tracked for me though it didn't even make sense.
[00:10:31] [SPEAKER_00]: I couldn't process some of the references they were throwing out.
[00:10:35] [SPEAKER_01]: No I'm not saying I disagree.
[00:10:36] [SPEAKER_01]: I just gave a lot of money to education I'm so sorry I had trouble reading.
[00:10:39] [SPEAKER_00]: Okay so was that the money that you got from Disney that Disney got from Pixar which you
[00:10:45] [SPEAKER_00]: gave to...
[00:10:46] [SPEAKER_01]: That I gave to USC this week the biggest donation of its no one's ever given it.
[00:10:52] [SPEAKER_00]: Is that part of some long con to get that money back in your pockets now?
[00:10:55] [SPEAKER_01]: I mean it'll come back.
[00:10:56] [SPEAKER_01]: So you're kind of like Las Vegas like the house always wins.
[00:10:59] [SPEAKER_01]: That's what I was saying.
[00:11:00] [SPEAKER_01]: Let's not distract from the fact that you said you had a hard time reading an article.
[00:11:03] [SPEAKER_00]: I'm not saying you read my...
[00:11:04] [SPEAKER_03]: On the AV club which usually employs I would say subhuman writers including myself.
[00:11:08] [SPEAKER_00]: Hey hey now uh look I was not saying look I know how to read okay.
[00:11:12] [SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
[00:11:13] [SPEAKER_00]: I tested very well on the English portion of my uh...
[00:11:16] [SPEAKER_00]: The English what?
[00:11:17] [SPEAKER_00]: The portion of my SATs.
[00:11:18] [SPEAKER_00]: Wow I'm ganging up on you Griffin.
[00:11:20] [SPEAKER_00]: My reading comprehension scores were off the charts not to brag.
[00:11:24] [SPEAKER_00]: Well let me summarize the article just says that the prequels are really great.
[00:11:27] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah I know I know I understood that part I might have slightly different opinions but I understood
[00:11:33] [SPEAKER_00]: it I was just saying some of the references they were throwing out maybe they were lofty
[00:11:36] [SPEAKER_00]: it just I didn't understand the illusions they were making but neither here nor there.
[00:11:41] [SPEAKER_00]: You make this film.
[00:11:43] [SPEAKER_00]: Sure.
[00:11:44] [SPEAKER_00]: Entirely your own vision.
[00:11:46] [SPEAKER_00]: Everything I wanted.
[00:11:47] [SPEAKER_00]: Everything you wanted.
[00:11:48] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[00:11:49] [SPEAKER_00]: You look at that film and you go that that is a successful representation of my vision.
[00:11:52] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah it's it's it's what I want it's the story I wanted to tell.
[00:11:56] [SPEAKER_01]: I have no regrets I think it holds up really well in the AV club of Greece.
[00:12:01] [SPEAKER_00]: Okay so here's the question I need to ask you.
[00:12:03] [SPEAKER_00]: Sure.
[00:12:05] [SPEAKER_00]: What is that story?
[00:12:07] [SPEAKER_00]: What is that story?
[00:12:08] [SPEAKER_00]: What is the one of the movies?
[00:12:09] [SPEAKER_00]: What is what is the Phantom let's do one at a time what is the Phantom Menace about
[00:12:12] [SPEAKER_00]: two-time four-time Academy Award nominee two-time best director nominee George Lucas.
[00:12:18] [SPEAKER_01]: All right there's some bad business going on.
[00:12:20] [SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
[00:12:20] [SPEAKER_01]: Bad things are happening and a little boy uh
[00:12:24] [SPEAKER_01]: starts a journey.
[00:12:26] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:12:26] [SPEAKER_01]: He's destined maybe for greatness.
[00:12:28] [SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
[00:12:29] [SPEAKER_01]: And we this is just the first chapter uh in his journey and he has a fun race.
[00:12:35] [SPEAKER_01]: He wins a big battle helps win a big battle.
[00:12:38] [SPEAKER_01]: Right.
[00:12:39] [SPEAKER_03]: He's pivotal I would say.
[00:12:40] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah and uh you know it's the classic uh you know uh little boy adventure story
[00:12:48] [SPEAKER_01]: where a little boy has an adventure.
[00:12:50] [SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
[00:12:50] [SPEAKER_01]: I don't know what I do you have a specific thing that you don't understand.
[00:12:53] [SPEAKER_03]: A little boy isn't even introduced until an hour into the movie.
[00:12:55] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah I was gonna say I mean I asked you what the film was about you focused on one character
[00:12:59] [SPEAKER_00]: excluded the other four main characters to share an equal mass trend time.
[00:13:02] [SPEAKER_01]: There's some Jedi's who are they think some bad business is going on in the in the universe
[00:13:08] [SPEAKER_01]: and.
[00:13:08] [SPEAKER_03]: Bad business yeah I mean it's the trade federation so they want they want good business.
[00:13:13] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah well no they're selfish and greedy I said they're greedy right in the opening.
[00:13:18] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah I know you said that George uh look you're a very smart man.
[00:13:21] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah greedy creatures I won't say men because when I say men then people think they're Asians
[00:13:26] [SPEAKER_01]: and they're not.
[00:13:26] [SPEAKER_03]: What are they can we get to the bottom of that?
[00:13:28] [SPEAKER_00]: I'm sorry when you say men people think they're Asians that's when that confusion
[00:13:32] [SPEAKER_00]: arises when you identify them.
[00:13:33] [SPEAKER_01]: A lot of times I promise I'll create an alien creature and then people will people will uh
[00:13:38] [SPEAKER_01]: ascribe earth human ethnicity to those characters they'll see parallels that were not intended
[00:13:45] [SPEAKER_01]: they'll see uh racial stereotypes.
[00:13:48] [SPEAKER_00]: I mean there are a lot of questions being raised here I don't even yeah okay go on go on.
[00:13:51] [SPEAKER_01]: All right uh Newt Gunray is not Asian.
[00:13:54] [SPEAKER_01]: Yes he is.
[00:13:55] [SPEAKER_01]: He's an Amoydian.
[00:13:56] [SPEAKER_01]: Okay he's an Amoydian.
[00:13:57] [SPEAKER_01]: Let me ask you a question let me ask you a question how do you how do you become an
[00:14:01] [SPEAKER_01]: Asian?
[00:14:02] [SPEAKER_01]: You know what?
[00:14:02] [SPEAKER_01]: What are the characteristics?
[00:14:04] [SPEAKER_01]: You tell me.
[00:14:05] [SPEAKER_01]: We're waiting into very difficult territory.
[00:14:05] [SPEAKER_01]: You know what you're doing to me right I'm not going to answer that question George.
[00:14:09] [SPEAKER_01]: One of the things probably has to have some connection to Asia right.
[00:14:13] [SPEAKER_01]: But these guys are from earth.
[00:14:15] [SPEAKER_01]: It never even entered earth.
[00:14:15] [SPEAKER_00]: Their garb is very it looks sort of like.
[00:14:18] [SPEAKER_00]: No the voice is.
[00:14:19] [SPEAKER_00]: Oh and the voice I mean I don't I look.
[00:14:21] [SPEAKER_01]: Yet you saying that.
[00:14:23] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah a lot of very racist people have uh these movies are a rorschach test.
[00:14:28] [SPEAKER_03]: I'll put an Amoydian into I just put it into Google.
[00:14:31] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah the two autocompletes that were suggested for me were
[00:14:35] [SPEAKER_03]: An Amoydian racist and An Amoydian Chinese.
[00:14:37] [SPEAKER_00]: Okay so George George so your your defense is you're saying that you intend nothing
[00:14:43] [SPEAKER_00]: but perhaps these films function as a fun house mirror as a rorschach test to see what you see.
[00:14:47] [SPEAKER_01]: I think no no it's I think I created a bunch of aliens right for instance people who think that
[00:14:55] [SPEAKER_01]: Wato people see Jewish.
[00:14:56] [SPEAKER_01]: He's a fine space Jew yes yes he is yes he is.
[00:14:59] [SPEAKER_00]: But I also know he rubs his chin a lot.
[00:15:02] [SPEAKER_00]: I'm a Jew he looks like my dad I know that Wato is Jewish I know he is.
[00:15:05] [SPEAKER_01]: Are you sure?
[00:15:05] [SPEAKER_01]: No let me ask you this.
[00:15:06] [SPEAKER_01]: He's always trying to drive a cut a deal and drive a heart bargain.
[00:15:08] [SPEAKER_01]: Are you sure that your dad isn't some kind of dirty guido.
[00:15:11] [SPEAKER_00]: Okay don't fucking say that George I'm sorry I'm sorry.
[00:15:13] [SPEAKER_00]: I'm trying to be professional here.
[00:15:15] [SPEAKER_00]: No I guess it's different.
[00:15:16] [SPEAKER_00]: He's some kind of dirty guido.
[00:15:18] [SPEAKER_00]: Are you kidding me George I'm sorry I'm sorry.
[00:15:21] [SPEAKER_01]: If anything well first of all I can tell you this Wato has never uh
[00:15:28] [SPEAKER_01]: his mother's not Jewish all right.
[00:15:32] [SPEAKER_01]: Which is the typical command here.
[00:15:34] [SPEAKER_01]: And he's never been to temple he's never practiced.
[00:15:38] [SPEAKER_00]: He's from Toydaria.
[00:15:39] [SPEAKER_00]: Okay I have to stop you here you're saying that these religious you know orientations
[00:15:45] [SPEAKER_00]: ethnicities gender identities don't even exist in your universe so if we see them if we
[00:15:50] [SPEAKER_00]: prescribed into characters that we're projecting but you acknowledge that Judaism does exist in
[00:15:54] [SPEAKER_00]: the Star Wars universe because Wato's mother isn't Jewish by your standards and Wato doesn't
[00:15:58] [SPEAKER_00]: fucking practice which means there are space Jews.
[00:16:01] [SPEAKER_00]: Stop ranting.
[00:16:02] [SPEAKER_01]: No well no later on there will be later but these these stories take place.
[00:16:08] [SPEAKER_00]: Hold on I'm sorry.
[00:16:10] [SPEAKER_00]: I'm sorry because this is personal to me I'm a Jewish person.
[00:16:13] [SPEAKER_00]: No come on.
[00:16:13] [SPEAKER_00]: He's making fun of my father.
[00:16:14] [SPEAKER_00]: My father's at financial problems Ben cut that out this is a sensitive subject.
[00:16:19] [SPEAKER_01]: Let me just say this yes I couldn't have been clearer at the beginning of these movies
[00:16:22] [SPEAKER_01]: saying when they took place and where.
[00:16:23] [SPEAKER_00]: A long time ago in a galaxy far far away.
[00:16:25] [SPEAKER_01]: Okay now two factors there when I said a long time ago maybe I should have been
[00:16:28] [SPEAKER_01]: more specific but I've had a very long time ago many many years before Judaism
[00:16:32] [SPEAKER_01]: even existed as a religion.
[00:16:34] [SPEAKER_00]: Then why even bring up that his mother isn't Jewish?
[00:16:36] [SPEAKER_01]: Why say that to me?
[00:16:37] [SPEAKER_01]: Because you accused him of being Jewish and I was pointing out first of all
[00:16:40] [SPEAKER_01]: Judaism didn't even exist when these movies take place.
[00:16:42] [SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
[00:16:43] [SPEAKER_01]: Also they're far away so Asia didn't exist yet it was probably still
[00:16:48] [SPEAKER_01]: there's probably what's the what do they call the original land mass.
[00:16:50] [SPEAKER_01]: A Pangea.
[00:16:51] [SPEAKER_01]: Pangea this is pre-Pangea.
[00:16:53] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah it's important to think about Griffin.
[00:16:55] [SPEAKER_03]: This is a dead end.
[00:16:56] [SPEAKER_03]: This is only Griffin.
[00:16:56] [SPEAKER_03]: Griffin I'm gonna ask you to take a chill pill.
[00:16:58] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm gonna take a chill pill.
[00:16:59] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah yeah I'm gonna put you in time out for a second.
[00:17:01] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah now Jar Jar Binks he's totally racist.
[00:17:05] [SPEAKER_03]: What?
[00:17:05] [SPEAKER_03]: Jar Jar Binks he's like totally racist right?
[00:17:08] [SPEAKER_01]: No in what for what race?
[00:17:10] [SPEAKER_01]: All right I'm not even gonna.
[00:17:11] [SPEAKER_03]: I was just kidding.
[00:17:12] [SPEAKER_03]: I was just kidding.
[00:17:13] [SPEAKER_03]: He's not.
[00:17:14] [SPEAKER_03]: Jar Jar is your co-host at the George Lucas talk show right?
[00:17:16] [SPEAKER_03]: That's right.
[00:17:16] [SPEAKER_03]: So he seems to have emerged into our world somehow.
[00:17:21] [SPEAKER_03]: Well he's CGI.
[00:17:22] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah it's true right right.
[00:17:23] [SPEAKER_00]: So when he's created like Simone Jar Jar into existence.
[00:17:28] [SPEAKER_03]: When you were making the Phantom Menace I think we've talked about this
[00:17:32] [SPEAKER_03]: there's a making of feature on the Phantom Menace DVD or something
[00:17:34] [SPEAKER_03]: where he says like you say Jar Jar is the key to all this
[00:17:37] [SPEAKER_03]: like sure get Jar Jar right we get everything right.
[00:17:40] [SPEAKER_03]: And we did.
[00:17:42] [SPEAKER_01]: It was it was a I mean it's very easy to destroy these things.
[00:17:47] [SPEAKER_01]: You can do it but I knew if we got Jar Jar right then everything would fall into place
[00:17:51] [SPEAKER_01]: and you know I read an interesting theory recently that I do not agree with.
[00:17:56] [SPEAKER_03]: Okay go ahead I want to ask you what you mean by getting him right but go ahead.
[00:17:59] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah it's every since he says has six questions springing off.
[00:18:03] [SPEAKER_01]: Well ask the questions I'm right here.
[00:18:04] [SPEAKER_01]: No but what was the answer?
[00:18:05] [SPEAKER_01]: Answer your yeah.
[00:18:06] [SPEAKER_01]: No there's a theory going around that.
[00:18:08] [SPEAKER_01]: Oh that Jar Jar is evil or is a sif sort of.
[00:18:11] [SPEAKER_01]: That I held back on using Jar Jar in the second and third movie
[00:18:15] [SPEAKER_01]: and that it was all going to be revealed later that he was pretending to be silly or accidental
[00:18:21] [SPEAKER_01]: but he's actually kind of you know.
[00:18:23] [SPEAKER_00]: Snake in the grass.
[00:18:25] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah kind of like that.
[00:18:27] [SPEAKER_01]: Jar Jar was exactly what I intended.
[00:18:29] [SPEAKER_01]: Which was.
[00:18:30] [SPEAKER_01]: I wanted the first movie to be Jar Jar all over the place
[00:18:33] [SPEAKER_01]: and then I wanted to use Jar Jar very judiciously in the second and third films.
[00:18:37] [SPEAKER_00]: That was a plan was to establish a character.
[00:18:39] [SPEAKER_00]: Huge part of the universe.
[00:18:40] [SPEAKER_03]: He's probably on screen for like 80 minutes of the first movie and then a combined two
[00:18:44] [SPEAKER_03]: of the second two movies.
[00:18:45] [SPEAKER_03]: If even that was intentional.
[00:18:47] [SPEAKER_03]: That was all your intention.
[00:18:48] [SPEAKER_01]: You give the audience what they need not what they want.
[00:18:51] [SPEAKER_01]: In some ways because these three movies are.
[00:18:55] [SPEAKER_01]: The arc of these three movies the arc of these three movies is that
[00:18:59] [SPEAKER_01]: I mean it's a tragedy and part of that.
[00:19:01] [SPEAKER_01]: The tragedy of Anakin Skywalker.
[00:19:02] [SPEAKER_01]: One of the way one of the ways that we established that and it's a very stealthy
[00:19:06] [SPEAKER_01]: way and I think a very successful way is you give the first movie you have a delightful
[00:19:11] [SPEAKER_01]: character that delights audiences amuses audiences.
[00:19:14] [SPEAKER_01]: Which one are your.
[00:19:15] [SPEAKER_03]: different Jar Jar Binks, Pratt Falls, Jar Jar Binks.
[00:19:17] [SPEAKER_03]: He has a amusing way of talking.
[00:19:19] [SPEAKER_03]: A very amusing way of talking.
[00:19:20] [SPEAKER_01]: I like this a lot.
[00:19:23] [SPEAKER_03]: He's sort of a Buster Keaton-esque.
[00:19:26] [SPEAKER_03]: Classic comedy.
[00:19:27] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, mixed into...
[00:19:28] [SPEAKER_00]: He's just like Buster Keaton, that guy who would never fucking stop talking.
[00:19:30] [SPEAKER_00]: He's exactly like Buster Keaton.
[00:19:31] [SPEAKER_01]: Well now that's not Buster Keaton's fault.
[00:19:33] [SPEAKER_01]: You know he existed in an era where, you know...
[00:19:35] [SPEAKER_01]: Go on, I'm sorry.
[00:19:36] [SPEAKER_01]: I shouldn't even...
[00:19:38] [SPEAKER_01]: You're very obsessed with timeline of things.
[00:19:41] [SPEAKER_01]: You're often getting upset about things
[00:19:44] [SPEAKER_01]: that don't make sense in the timeline in which you're upset.
[00:19:47] [SPEAKER_00]: Do you want to know the timeline I'm upset about right now?
[00:19:49] [SPEAKER_00]: We spent seven months fucking studying these movies.
[00:19:51] [SPEAKER_00]: You're saying that Buster Keaton...
[00:19:53] [SPEAKER_00]: I'm sorry, I...
[00:19:54] [SPEAKER_01]: That the reason Buster Keaton didn't talk a lot
[00:19:57] [SPEAKER_01]: was because that's his character as opposed to the fact
[00:20:00] [SPEAKER_01]: that movies didn't have words, though.
[00:20:02] [SPEAKER_01]: Go on, George.
[00:20:03] [SPEAKER_01]: Alright.
[00:20:05] [SPEAKER_01]: Wait, wait, wait.
[00:20:05] [SPEAKER_01]: If Buster Keaton had been around for Phantom Menace,
[00:20:07] [SPEAKER_01]: I bet he would have talked a lot of it.
[00:20:08] [SPEAKER_01]: He would have said,
[00:20:09] [SPEAKER_00]: Oh no, Misa, think a house gonna fall on my head.
[00:20:11] [SPEAKER_00]: That's what he would say.
[00:20:12] [SPEAKER_01]: Now, why would you think he wouldn't say that?
[00:20:14] [SPEAKER_00]: Well, first of all...
[00:20:15] [SPEAKER_00]: I don't even remember what the question was when you were asking.
[00:20:17] [SPEAKER_00]: What?
[00:20:19] [SPEAKER_01]: George, there's a very good reason why he probably wouldn't talk like that
[00:20:20] [SPEAKER_01]: is because I don't think Buster Keaton
[00:20:22] [SPEAKER_01]: and his entire filmography ever played a gong in.
[00:20:26] [SPEAKER_01]: Alright?
[00:20:26] [SPEAKER_00]: I can't even deal with you.
[00:20:28] [SPEAKER_00]: Let me ask you this.
[00:20:29] [SPEAKER_01]: Do you think Buster Keaton is Asian?
[00:20:31] [SPEAKER_00]: Do I think Buster Keaton is Asian?
[00:20:32] [SPEAKER_00]: Fuck.
[00:20:33] [SPEAKER_00]: No, I don't think Buster Keaton is Asian.
[00:20:34] [SPEAKER_01]: I know for a fact he wasn't Asian.
[00:20:36] [SPEAKER_01]: I don't know why he wasn't Asian.
[00:20:39] [SPEAKER_01]: Because he was a real human being.
[00:20:40] [SPEAKER_01]: We know his genealogy.
[00:20:41] [SPEAKER_01]: Okay, but why...
[00:20:42] [SPEAKER_00]: I'll be specific.
[00:20:44] [SPEAKER_01]: Why was Buster Keaton...
[00:20:45] [SPEAKER_01]: I don't remember.
[00:20:46] [SPEAKER_01]: So he wasn't from Asia.
[00:20:48] [SPEAKER_01]: And he didn't have any Asian lineage.
[00:20:50] [SPEAKER_01]: Those are the factors?
[00:20:51] [SPEAKER_01]: Guys, yes.
[00:20:52] [SPEAKER_01]: He shares those in common with a certain person that I like to call
[00:20:54] [SPEAKER_01]: Jar Jar Binks.
[00:20:56] [SPEAKER_03]: We're really...
[00:20:57] [SPEAKER_03]: You're not defending my Jar Jar Binks stuff, I want to...
[00:20:58] [SPEAKER_03]: Is it Asian?
[00:20:59] [SPEAKER_03]: That's so...
[00:21:00] [SPEAKER_03]: Jar Jar Binks is Caribbean.
[00:21:02] [SPEAKER_03]: Let's get back to the point you were making.
[00:21:04] [SPEAKER_03]: It's a serious interview.
[00:21:05] [SPEAKER_03]: New gun ray.
[00:21:05] [SPEAKER_01]: New gun ray.
[00:21:06] [SPEAKER_01]: Not Asian.
[00:21:06] [SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
[00:21:07] [SPEAKER_03]: I want to get back to the point that you were making
[00:21:08] [SPEAKER_03]: which is the first movie has tons of Jar Jar Binks
[00:21:11] [SPEAKER_03]: Delightful Care.
[00:21:12] [SPEAKER_01]: It's even what they want because things are relatively...
[00:21:15] [SPEAKER_01]: We're in a good place in Phantom Menace.
[00:21:17] [SPEAKER_01]: There's some bad business going on.
[00:21:18] [SPEAKER_01]: Bad business.
[00:21:18] [SPEAKER_01]: It's a little bit under the surface.
[00:21:19] [SPEAKER_01]: It's gonna get a lot worse.
[00:21:21] [SPEAKER_01]: It's gonna get a lot worse.
[00:21:24] [SPEAKER_01]: And...
[00:21:25] [SPEAKER_01]: He does have a shit in him.
[00:21:26] [SPEAKER_01]: Part of the reason...
[00:21:27] [SPEAKER_01]: He's grinning so light.
[00:21:27] [SPEAKER_01]: Part of the reason...
[00:21:28] [SPEAKER_01]: You guys can see this.
[00:21:29] [SPEAKER_01]: Part of the reason why you deprive the audience of Jar Jar
[00:21:33] [SPEAKER_01]: in episodes two and three is that's...
[00:21:36] [SPEAKER_01]: The audience will feel it.
[00:21:37] [SPEAKER_01]: They absorb it.
[00:21:38] [SPEAKER_01]: They think...
[00:21:38] [SPEAKER_01]: The lack of comedy.
[00:21:39] [SPEAKER_01]: It's not as much fun.
[00:21:40] [SPEAKER_01]: The lack of smiles.
[00:21:41] [SPEAKER_01]: Things are less fun than they used to be.
[00:21:43] [SPEAKER_01]: And that's a loud and clear message.
[00:21:45] [SPEAKER_00]: To what ultimate end?
[00:21:46] [SPEAKER_00]: What's the payoff there?
[00:21:48] [SPEAKER_00]: You take him away so they feel the absence
[00:21:49] [SPEAKER_00]: and then you never bring him back.
[00:21:51] [SPEAKER_00]: His final...
[00:21:51] [SPEAKER_01]: I did bring him back.
[00:21:51] [SPEAKER_01]: He's sad when...
[00:21:53] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that's my point.
[00:21:54] [SPEAKER_00]: So the final payoff is you seem shed a single tear?
[00:21:56] [SPEAKER_03]: That's what I want to get this to.
[00:21:57] [SPEAKER_03]: The final payoff of the whole movies is that...
[00:22:00] [SPEAKER_03]: Restraint.
[00:22:00] [SPEAKER_03]: Is that the galaxy collapses into ruin
[00:22:05] [SPEAKER_03]: and is controlled by a tyrant
[00:22:07] [SPEAKER_03]: and the Jedi are massacred.
[00:22:08] [SPEAKER_03]: Right.
[00:22:08] [SPEAKER_03]: And our hero turns into a villain.
[00:22:11] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[00:22:11] [SPEAKER_03]: And his legs get chapped off and he's set on fire
[00:22:13] [SPEAKER_03]: and he gets put into a metal iron lung.
[00:22:16] [SPEAKER_03]: Sure.
[00:22:17] [SPEAKER_03]: So that's a pretty down...
[00:22:18] [SPEAKER_03]: There's not a lot of up.
[00:22:19] [SPEAKER_03]: No.
[00:22:20] [SPEAKER_03]: Of course not.
[00:22:20] [SPEAKER_01]: The only up really is that his two kids are alive.
[00:22:24] [SPEAKER_01]: I'd love to hear you got...
[00:22:25] [SPEAKER_01]: You know what I have a suggestion for your next podcast?
[00:22:27] [SPEAKER_01]: You should read all the Shakespeare plays
[00:22:29] [SPEAKER_01]: in the Hevelium Shakespeare
[00:22:29] [SPEAKER_01]: coming here to defend the end of Hamlet.
[00:22:31] [SPEAKER_00]: Well, that's not a problem.
[00:22:32] [SPEAKER_00]: We couldn't book the real William Shakespeare
[00:22:34] [SPEAKER_00]: because he's dead and we don't...
[00:22:35] [SPEAKER_00]: No, but I bet you have a lot of problems
[00:22:36] [SPEAKER_00]: with the ending of Hamlet.
[00:22:38] [SPEAKER_00]: I don't have any problems with the ending of Hamlet
[00:22:40] [SPEAKER_00]: because Hamlet was structured from the beginning
[00:22:42] [SPEAKER_00]: to be a tragedy.
[00:22:43] [SPEAKER_01]: Well, this was structured from the beginning
[00:22:45] [SPEAKER_01]: to be a tragedy.
[00:22:45] [SPEAKER_00]: Wait, wait, when the kid's saying,
[00:22:47] [SPEAKER_00]: get me and he's running around with a space Caribbean?
[00:22:49] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, Hamlet's having fun at the beginning of that.
[00:22:51] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I forgot Hamlet has that big pod race scene
[00:22:53] [SPEAKER_00]: at the beginning.
[00:22:54] [SPEAKER_00]: Remember our first act of Hamlet?
[00:22:55] [SPEAKER_00]: First of all, Shakespeare...
[00:22:56] [SPEAKER_00]: Billy Crystal is in Hamlet.
[00:22:57] [SPEAKER_00]: Let's not forget.
[00:22:58] [SPEAKER_00]: A version of Hamlet.
[00:23:00] [SPEAKER_00]: Billy Crystal is in the original text of Hamlet.
[00:23:03] [SPEAKER_03]: And also, what about Hamlet 2?
[00:23:03] [SPEAKER_03]: Hamlet 2 is a lot more fun than Hamlet 1.
[00:23:06] [SPEAKER_03]: That's a loose sequel.
[00:23:07] [SPEAKER_00]: That's a loose sequel and you know it.
[00:23:10] [SPEAKER_01]: Well...
[00:23:10] [SPEAKER_00]: There's none of the same character.
[00:23:11] [SPEAKER_01]: It sounds like you're criticizing me for things
[00:23:13] [SPEAKER_01]: that I did on purpose.
[00:23:14] [SPEAKER_00]: I'm trying not to criticize you.
[00:23:15] [SPEAKER_00]: I'm trying to make sense of this, okay?
[00:23:17] [SPEAKER_00]: Could we ask about the directing of Jake Lloyd?
[00:23:20] [SPEAKER_03]: Yes, great question.
[00:23:21] [SPEAKER_03]: So you bring in...
[00:23:22] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, that's a great question.
[00:23:23] [SPEAKER_03]: Poet Laureate, this is why we have you in here.
[00:23:23] [SPEAKER_03]: We asked you what Phantom Menace was about
[00:23:25] [SPEAKER_03]: and you focused on Anakin.
[00:23:27] [SPEAKER_03]: Sure.
[00:23:27] [SPEAKER_03]: I still think we can get better at answering that
[00:23:29] [SPEAKER_00]: but we'll get back to that later.
[00:23:30] [SPEAKER_03]: So we've got Jake Lloyd.
[00:23:31] [SPEAKER_03]: You bring him in.
[00:23:32] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[00:23:33] [SPEAKER_03]: What about Jake Lloyd spoke to you when you were casting?
[00:23:35] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, talk about the casting process.
[00:23:37] [SPEAKER_01]: If you ever saw Unhooked the Stars,
[00:23:39] [SPEAKER_01]: Jake Lloyd's very good in that movie.
[00:23:40] [SPEAKER_00]: Yes, we agree with that.
[00:23:43] [SPEAKER_01]: We've said that in the past.
[00:23:43] [SPEAKER_01]: That's obviously got a different acting style
[00:23:45] [SPEAKER_01]: than the prequels do.
[00:23:47] [SPEAKER_01]: Naturalistic.
[00:23:48] [SPEAKER_01]: Jake gets a lot of...
[00:23:50] [SPEAKER_01]: Early on there were Naysayers.
[00:23:52] [SPEAKER_01]: I think they would be a little bit hard on Jake
[00:23:54] [SPEAKER_01]: but I think if you look at the baseline acting style
[00:23:57] [SPEAKER_01]: that I established for the whole movie,
[00:23:58] [SPEAKER_01]: I think Jake Lloyd's acting holds up with...
[00:24:00] [SPEAKER_01]: It holds up with Liam Neeson,
[00:24:02] [SPEAKER_01]: you and McGregor, I think across the board.
[00:24:06] [SPEAKER_00]: Categorically, I think.
[00:24:07] [SPEAKER_03]: I would say he's a little more one note.
[00:24:10] [SPEAKER_00]: You're actually going to sit here in this room,
[00:24:11] [SPEAKER_00]: look me in the eyes and tell me that Jake Lloyd
[00:24:13] [SPEAKER_00]: is delivering the same level of performance
[00:24:14] [SPEAKER_00]: as Liam Neeson in that film.
[00:24:16] [SPEAKER_00]: I would say that.
[00:24:16] [SPEAKER_00]: You are a sociopath.
[00:24:17] [SPEAKER_00]: George Lucas, you are a sociopath.
[00:24:20] [SPEAKER_00]: I would say that.
[00:24:20] [SPEAKER_00]: You would say that.
[00:24:21] [SPEAKER_00]: Okay, well you're a lunatic.
[00:24:22] [SPEAKER_00]: I'm sorry.
[00:24:23] [SPEAKER_00]: I didn't know you were going to be this angry.
[00:24:24] [SPEAKER_00]: I didn't either.
[00:24:25] [SPEAKER_00]: No, I really thought...
[00:24:26] [SPEAKER_00]: I think you should relax.
[00:24:27] [SPEAKER_00]: I have to relax.
[00:24:28] [SPEAKER_00]: I'm sorry.
[00:24:28] [SPEAKER_00]: Dave, you take the next question.
[00:24:29] [SPEAKER_00]: I got it.
[00:24:30] [SPEAKER_01]: No, I would say the reason you're angry is because
[00:24:33] [SPEAKER_01]: you should be angry after you watch these movies.
[00:24:35] [SPEAKER_01]: That's the point.
[00:24:36] [SPEAKER_00]: You're saying that you succeeded.
[00:24:37] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I got a reaction at you.
[00:24:39] [SPEAKER_00]: I never...
[00:24:40] [SPEAKER_00]: You're sad.
[00:24:41] [SPEAKER_01]: You're sad.
[00:24:42] [SPEAKER_01]: Your universe is in ruins emotionally
[00:24:44] [SPEAKER_01]: and that's the point of these movies
[00:24:45] [SPEAKER_01]: is to get you to a point where
[00:24:47] [SPEAKER_01]: all you want is to see Jar Jar again
[00:24:49] [SPEAKER_01]: happy and joking and falling over things.
[00:24:51] [SPEAKER_03]: Sure, right, right.
[00:24:52] [SPEAKER_03]: That's what everyone's crying out for in the third film.
[00:24:54] [SPEAKER_00]: So your defense of these movies right now
[00:24:56] [SPEAKER_00]: is that you are Palpatine and I am Anakin.
[00:24:58] [SPEAKER_00]: And you have pushed me into the fate
[00:25:01] [SPEAKER_00]: that I always had coming, which is...
[00:25:03] [SPEAKER_00]: Well, I think...
[00:25:03] [SPEAKER_03]: That's a good question.
[00:25:04] [SPEAKER_03]: I don't hear you saying yippee.
[00:25:05] [SPEAKER_03]: Who do you identify with most in the Star Wars films?
[00:25:09] [SPEAKER_03]: Who's your analog, I would say?
[00:25:12] [SPEAKER_03]: A little bit of Yoda maybe.
[00:25:15] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh, Yoda, interesting, interesting.
[00:25:17] [SPEAKER_03]: Wouldn't you argue that in the films
[00:25:18] [SPEAKER_03]: Yoda is kind of a little divorced from
[00:25:21] [SPEAKER_03]: the reality of what's going on?
[00:25:23] [SPEAKER_03]: Like he doesn't really anticipate
[00:25:25] [SPEAKER_03]: the tragedy that befalls the Jedi.
[00:25:27] [SPEAKER_03]: Like he knows something is coming
[00:25:30] [SPEAKER_03]: but he doesn't anticipate it and he doesn't deal with it.
[00:25:33] [SPEAKER_01]: It's not a one-to-one comparison.
[00:25:35] [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I am all of these characters.
[00:25:36] [SPEAKER_01]: These characters are all of me,
[00:25:37] [SPEAKER_01]: but if I have to pick one, which was your question,
[00:25:40] [SPEAKER_01]: Yoda's cool and wise and old and that's me.
[00:25:42] [SPEAKER_00]: At the end of the third film,
[00:25:43] [SPEAKER_00]: Yoda realizes that he has conclusively
[00:25:46] [SPEAKER_00]: failed in his years-long mission.
[00:25:48] [SPEAKER_00]: I believe he says failed, I have.
[00:25:50] [SPEAKER_00]: And so he vanishes himself
[00:25:53] [SPEAKER_00]: to a lifetime of solitude in a swamp
[00:25:56] [SPEAKER_00]: we found out from its elated scenes.
[00:25:57] [SPEAKER_01]: Well, I quit making films.
[00:25:58] [SPEAKER_01]: Well, this is my point.
[00:26:00] [SPEAKER_01]: Took the money from Disney and ran.
[00:26:02] [SPEAKER_03]: This is my point.
[00:26:03] [SPEAKER_03]: You ran?
[00:26:03] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:26:04] [SPEAKER_03]: You're never gonna make a movie again?
[00:26:06] [SPEAKER_01]: No, never again.
[00:26:07] [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, my big museum, do my show monthly at UCB East.
[00:26:09] [SPEAKER_01]: Those are the two.
[00:26:10] [SPEAKER_00]: Strange magic was the last one.
[00:26:12] [SPEAKER_00]: That's the note you're pointing at.
[00:26:12] [SPEAKER_00]: I helped out with that.
[00:26:14] [SPEAKER_01]: No, I was from the mind of George Lucas.
[00:26:16] [SPEAKER_01]: It was, I remember.
[00:26:17] [SPEAKER_01]: That was my credit from the mind of George Lucas.
[00:26:19] [SPEAKER_01]: I'll have more things from my mind.
[00:26:20] [SPEAKER_01]: I don't mind doing that.
[00:26:21] [SPEAKER_03]: This is all coming from your mind right now.
[00:26:23] [SPEAKER_01]: You're enraging Griffin with your mind.
[00:26:24] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:26:25] [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, boy.
[00:26:25] [SPEAKER_00]: I guess that's like Yoda 2 is he keeps on saying,
[00:26:28] [SPEAKER_00]: why are you so angry?
[00:26:29] [SPEAKER_00]: Why are you so angry?
[00:26:30] [SPEAKER_00]: Which is only making me angrier.
[00:26:31] [SPEAKER_00]: You know, it's classic Yoda-Anakin dynamic.
[00:26:34] [SPEAKER_01]: I did do one piece of filmmaking which I put online.
[00:26:36] [SPEAKER_01]: It's kind of a little bit of, you know, essentially,
[00:26:39] [SPEAKER_01]: I've always said, you know,
[00:26:40] [SPEAKER_01]: eventually I'll get back to making small personal films,
[00:26:43] [SPEAKER_01]: underground films and stuff like that.
[00:26:44] [SPEAKER_01]: I did put one thing online.
[00:26:45] [SPEAKER_01]: You can see it on Vimeo.
[00:26:46] [SPEAKER_01]: I did a, it's not official
[00:26:47] [SPEAKER_01]: because I don't own the films anymore.
[00:26:49] [SPEAKER_01]: I did an alternate ending to episode three
[00:26:53] [SPEAKER_01]: where I redubbed Darth Vader's dialogue
[00:26:56] [SPEAKER_01]: and I think it's great
[00:26:57] [SPEAKER_01]: and I encouraged people to check it out.
[00:26:59] [SPEAKER_01]: Okay, good.
[00:26:59] [SPEAKER_01]: Just a little alternate.
[00:27:01] [SPEAKER_01]: I use the audio from Alec Baldwin's phone call
[00:27:03] [SPEAKER_01]: message to his daughter.
[00:27:05] [SPEAKER_03]: Talking about...
[00:27:06] [SPEAKER_03]: Just a fun...
[00:27:06] [SPEAKER_03]: Are you personal friends with Alec Baldwin?
[00:27:08] [SPEAKER_00]: No.
[00:27:09] [SPEAKER_00]: So wait, you're presenting this to our listeners
[00:27:11] [SPEAKER_00]: as your return to filmmaking
[00:27:13] [SPEAKER_00]: and now you're telling me it's some meme?
[00:27:15] [SPEAKER_00]: It's you just over laying Alec Baldwin's voicemail
[00:27:18] [SPEAKER_00]: to his daughter?
[00:27:19] [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, it's not canon.
[00:27:20] [SPEAKER_01]: And then it's more expanded universe.
[00:27:21] [SPEAKER_01]: It's not canon.
[00:27:22] [SPEAKER_01]: It's expanded universe.
[00:27:22] [SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
[00:27:23] [SPEAKER_01]: But I do want people to look at that clip.
[00:27:26] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:27:29] [SPEAKER_02]: Well, hey, how about let's just try
[00:27:32] [SPEAKER_02]: to keep this moving along.
[00:27:33] [SPEAKER_02]: Let's keep this moving along.
[00:27:34] [SPEAKER_02]: Let's go on to Attack of the Clones.
[00:27:35] [SPEAKER_02]: Attack of the Clones.
[00:27:36] [SPEAKER_00]: Great movie.
[00:27:38] [SPEAKER_00]: I'm sorry, before we go on Attack of the Clones
[00:27:39] [SPEAKER_00]: I just want to ask one more time.
[00:27:42] [SPEAKER_00]: I'm not asking for a Wikipedia plot synopsis.
[00:27:45] [SPEAKER_00]: I'm asking George, what is the fantomenis about?
[00:27:49] [SPEAKER_00]: There's bad business going on.
[00:27:50] [SPEAKER_00]: Now what happens?
[00:27:51] [SPEAKER_00]: What's it about?
[00:27:53] [SPEAKER_01]: We've seen it.
[00:27:54] [SPEAKER_01]: We know what happens.
[00:27:55] [SPEAKER_01]: This little boy seems important.
[00:27:57] [SPEAKER_01]: Maybe he is.
[00:27:59] [SPEAKER_01]: Okay, Attack of the Clones.
[00:28:01] [SPEAKER_03]: That's actually a pretty good answer.
[00:28:02] [SPEAKER_00]: That's pretty good.
[00:28:03] [SPEAKER_00]: I'm angry only because he's answering it well.
[00:28:06] [SPEAKER_03]: It's true because it's like there's a lot
[00:28:07] [SPEAKER_03]: of bad business as George says.
[00:28:09] [SPEAKER_03]: There's bad business.
[00:28:10] [SPEAKER_01]: Some Jedi's are going around the universe
[00:28:12] [SPEAKER_01]: trying to deal with bad business.
[00:28:13] [SPEAKER_01]: They come across the little boy
[00:28:15] [SPEAKER_01]: and they're like this kid seems important.
[00:28:16] [SPEAKER_01]: Maybe he is.
[00:28:17] [SPEAKER_03]: The biggest mystery of that movie is
[00:28:19] [SPEAKER_03]: what's up with the kid?
[00:28:21] [SPEAKER_03]: You know, like the mystery is not like
[00:28:22] [SPEAKER_03]: who's that hooded figure because we know
[00:28:24] [SPEAKER_03]: who that hooded figure is.
[00:28:25] [SPEAKER_03]: It's Palpatine.
[00:28:26] [SPEAKER_03]: That's right.
[00:28:27] [SPEAKER_03]: I would argue the biggest mystery is
[00:28:29] [SPEAKER_03]: how does curasant work?
[00:28:31] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, how does curasant work?
[00:28:32] [SPEAKER_03]: It's your creation.
[00:28:33] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, let's Attack of the Clones.
[00:28:34] [SPEAKER_00]: Let's hit the ground.
[00:28:34] [SPEAKER_00]: What's the infrastructure?
[00:28:35] [SPEAKER_00]: The whole planet is a city.
[00:28:37] [SPEAKER_00]: We can't get over this.
[00:28:38] [SPEAKER_00]: We've been chewing on this one for months.
[00:28:40] [SPEAKER_03]: How does that work?
[00:28:41] [SPEAKER_03]: How is it powered?
[00:28:42] [SPEAKER_03]: How do they not all just die and develop to smard?
[00:28:44] [SPEAKER_03]: Is the mayor the president of the world
[00:28:46] [SPEAKER_00]: is uptown the buildings that are closer to the sky
[00:28:48] [SPEAKER_00]: and downtown the buildings that are closer to the ground?
[00:28:51] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that's good.
[00:28:52] [SPEAKER_00]: That is good?
[00:28:52] [SPEAKER_00]: Sure.
[00:28:53] [SPEAKER_00]: Thank you.
[00:28:54] [SPEAKER_00]: It's a city planet.
[00:28:55] [SPEAKER_00]: We know that.
[00:28:56] [SPEAKER_00]: The whole planet is a desert planet.
[00:28:58] [SPEAKER_01]: The whole planet is a desert.
[00:28:59] [SPEAKER_01]: Yup.
[00:28:59] [SPEAKER_01]: Coruscant is a city planet.
[00:29:00] [SPEAKER_01]: The whole planet is a city.
[00:29:01] [SPEAKER_01]: Right.
[00:29:01] [SPEAKER_01]: We know that.
[00:29:02] [SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
[00:29:03] [SPEAKER_03]: What about Mr. Flaw?
[00:29:03] [SPEAKER_03]: That's your whole answer.
[00:29:04] [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, you guys seem kind of mad
[00:29:06] [SPEAKER_01]: that I made so much a fan amiss
[00:29:07] [SPEAKER_01]: about the Trade Federation.
[00:29:08] [SPEAKER_01]: I don't think if I'd made the second movie
[00:29:09] [SPEAKER_01]: about infrastructure that you guys
[00:29:11] [SPEAKER_01]: would have been any happier.
[00:29:12] [SPEAKER_00]: What are you asking for?
[00:29:13] [SPEAKER_01]: Wait, wait, wait, what's the second movie about?
[00:29:16] [SPEAKER_01]: The second movie?
[00:29:17] [SPEAKER_01]: He's a cheater, and now he's in love.
[00:29:18] [SPEAKER_01]: The second movie is a romance.
[00:29:20] [SPEAKER_03]: Interesting.
[00:29:20] [SPEAKER_01]: But a doomed romance.
[00:29:21] [SPEAKER_01]: So it's about doomed love, would you say?
[00:29:24] [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, look how it ends.
[00:29:25] [SPEAKER_01]: Things are going well.
[00:29:26] [SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
[00:29:26] [SPEAKER_00]: I'm not asking for city council meetings
[00:29:28] [SPEAKER_01]: on Coruscant.
[00:29:28] [SPEAKER_01]: Can a boy love a girl?
[00:29:29] [SPEAKER_01]: Maybe.
[00:29:30] [SPEAKER_01]: That's the second movie.
[00:29:31] [SPEAKER_00]: That's the central question of Attack the Clones
[00:29:33] [SPEAKER_00]: is can a boy love a girl?
[00:29:34] [SPEAKER_00]: Maybe.
[00:29:36] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:29:37] [SPEAKER_01]: The first movie is, here's this kid.
[00:29:40] [SPEAKER_01]: Is this kid important?
[00:29:41] [SPEAKER_01]: Maybe.
[00:29:41] [SPEAKER_01]: Second movie is can a boy love a girl?
[00:29:43] [SPEAKER_01]: Maybe.
[00:29:44] [SPEAKER_01]: What's a, what's a cisive story line?
[00:29:45] [SPEAKER_01]: The third movie.
[00:29:46] [SPEAKER_01]: The third movie.
[00:29:47] [SPEAKER_01]: No, because it's not one, these aren't individual.
[00:29:50] [SPEAKER_01]: Like you're breaking these down the wrong way.
[00:29:52] [SPEAKER_01]: It's all one book.
[00:29:53] [SPEAKER_01]: These are chapters in the book.
[00:29:54] [SPEAKER_01]: The first, the first is, hey, here's this kid.
[00:29:56] [SPEAKER_01]: Is he important?
[00:29:57] [SPEAKER_01]: Maybe.
[00:29:57] [SPEAKER_01]: Second one is can a boy love a girl?
[00:29:59] [SPEAKER_01]: Maybe.
[00:29:59] [SPEAKER_01]: Third movie answers those questions.
[00:30:01] [SPEAKER_01]: Yes, turns out he was important,
[00:30:02] [SPEAKER_01]: but maybe for the wrong reasons.
[00:30:04] [SPEAKER_01]: Could he love a woman?
[00:30:05] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, but it doesn't matter because it was doomed
[00:30:07] [SPEAKER_01]: because of the, see the first question.
[00:30:09] [SPEAKER_00]: This is an interesting point actually
[00:30:10] [SPEAKER_00]: that George is raising.
[00:30:11] [SPEAKER_00]: Sure.
[00:30:11] [SPEAKER_00]: Which is that there are, you know,
[00:30:13] [SPEAKER_00]: there's a vocal contingent of artists
[00:30:16] [SPEAKER_00]: and content makers who believe that our culture.
[00:30:19] [SPEAKER_00]: Storytellers.
[00:30:20] [SPEAKER_00]: Storytellers, yes.
[00:30:22] [SPEAKER_00]: Believe that our culture of doing individualized reviews
[00:30:25] [SPEAKER_00]: of specific episodes of television
[00:30:27] [SPEAKER_00]: or specific episodes of podcasts,
[00:30:29] [SPEAKER_00]: two things that you have gotten paid to do in your life, David.
[00:30:31] [SPEAKER_00]: True.
[00:30:31] [SPEAKER_00]: Is not a good idea.
[00:30:33] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[00:30:33] [SPEAKER_00]: There's a whole group of people who think that
[00:30:35] [SPEAKER_00]: works like that, that are serialized,
[00:30:37] [SPEAKER_00]: should not be viewed by their separate parts
[00:30:39] [SPEAKER_00]: and with time and distance.
[00:30:40] [SPEAKER_00]: Right, you gotta zoom out.
[00:30:40] [SPEAKER_00]: You know, totality.
[00:30:41] [SPEAKER_01]: I think it's valid to view those things
[00:30:43] [SPEAKER_01]: and you can take apart a car
[00:30:47] [SPEAKER_01]: and judge the individual parts of it,
[00:30:49] [SPEAKER_01]: but ultimately if you want to drive it
[00:30:50] [SPEAKER_01]: you gotta put the car back together.
[00:30:52] [SPEAKER_00]: But you're almost saying to us that
[00:30:54] [SPEAKER_00]: to look at each of these films
[00:30:56] [SPEAKER_00]: and expect them to function in the way
[00:30:58] [SPEAKER_00]: that a conventional film does is wrong headed.
[00:31:01] [SPEAKER_00]: No, I mean I'm not saying that what I've done
[00:31:03] [SPEAKER_01]: is an extraordinary and maybe a little different
[00:31:05] [SPEAKER_01]: and maybe that's what you're reacting to.
[00:31:07] [SPEAKER_00]: You're not saying that.
[00:31:08] [SPEAKER_01]: No, I'm saying what I'm saying is that
[00:31:11] [SPEAKER_01]: what I've done is extraordinary and maybe a little different
[00:31:13] [SPEAKER_01]: and maybe that I'm sorry that this can't be
[00:31:16] [SPEAKER_01]: like every other movie, but we're doing something different.
[00:31:19] [SPEAKER_00]: Does your back hurt, George?
[00:31:21] [SPEAKER_00]: Why?
[00:31:22] [SPEAKER_00]: Because you keep on patting yourself on it.
[00:31:23] [SPEAKER_01]: No, it feels good.
[00:31:24] [SPEAKER_01]: Patting feels good.
[00:31:25] [SPEAKER_01]: I don't know why you would...
[00:31:27] [SPEAKER_01]: If people have been hitting you
[00:31:28] [SPEAKER_01]: and calling it patting on the back if it's hurting.
[00:31:31] [SPEAKER_03]: George, what were your major inspirations
[00:31:33] [SPEAKER_03]: for the flowers?
[00:31:33] [SPEAKER_03]: Great question.
[00:31:34] [SPEAKER_03]: Flash Gordon.
[00:31:35] [SPEAKER_03]: Sure.
[00:31:37] [SPEAKER_03]: That's it?
[00:31:37] [SPEAKER_03]: That's the one?
[00:31:38] [SPEAKER_03]: Coroussala.
[00:31:40] [SPEAKER_03]: Coroussantua, more like...
[00:31:41] [SPEAKER_03]: What do you mean?
[00:31:42] [SPEAKER_03]: No, it's just...
[00:31:43] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh, you're making a play on Coroussant?
[00:31:44] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[00:31:44] [SPEAKER_01]: Sure, yeah, it's fine.
[00:31:46] [SPEAKER_01]: Was that conscious?
[00:31:47] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's a tribute.
[00:31:50] [SPEAKER_01]: The Coroussala films are very...
[00:31:52] [SPEAKER_01]: Hidden fortress.
[00:31:53] [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, look at that big inspiration.
[00:31:55] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that movie has a princess.
[00:31:57] [SPEAKER_00]: You had a film with a queen.
[00:31:58] [SPEAKER_00]: It has these two sort of bumbling ofs
[00:32:01] [SPEAKER_03]: who I guess you turned into a long bumbling.
[00:32:02] [SPEAKER_01]: See now, you understand the relationship
[00:32:04] [SPEAKER_01]: between a princess and a queen
[00:32:06] [SPEAKER_01]: and how one thing leads to another,
[00:32:07] [SPEAKER_01]: but you still think Newt Gunray is from Asia.
[00:32:10] [SPEAKER_00]: How are those two things related?
[00:32:12] [SPEAKER_00]: I don't even understand the comparison you're trying to make.
[00:32:13] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm saying I think you're being selective
[00:32:14] [SPEAKER_01]: in when you look at causality.
[00:32:17] [SPEAKER_03]: George, I have a question.
[00:32:18] [SPEAKER_03]: Sure.
[00:32:18] [SPEAKER_03]: You're in Revenge of the Sith.
[00:32:20] [SPEAKER_03]: That's right.
[00:32:20] [SPEAKER_03]: You play...
[00:32:21] [SPEAKER_03]: Baron Papanoida.
[00:32:23] Yeah.
[00:32:24] [SPEAKER_03]: How was the experience of being in your camera?
[00:32:25] [SPEAKER_01]: I heard your performance review.
[00:32:26] [SPEAKER_01]: You gave me a bad review for that.
[00:32:28] [SPEAKER_03]: We gave you a thumbs down.
[00:32:29] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm sorry about that.
[00:32:29] [SPEAKER_00]: Okay, but do you consider yourself an actor?
[00:32:31] [SPEAKER_00]: I mean, are you really offended by that?
[00:32:33] [SPEAKER_00]: More so than the other things we've said
[00:32:35] [SPEAKER_00]: about you on this podcast.
[00:32:36] [SPEAKER_01]: Well, I'm not an actor primarily,
[00:32:39] [SPEAKER_01]: but I have acted before.
[00:32:40] [SPEAKER_01]: I was in Beverly Hills Cup 3.
[00:32:42] [SPEAKER_01]: I was in Just Shoot Me.
[00:32:43] [SPEAKER_00]: Okay, but...
[00:32:44] [SPEAKER_00]: Beverly Hills Cup 3.
[00:32:44] [SPEAKER_00]: You were in the OC.
[00:32:45] [SPEAKER_00]: That's right.
[00:32:46] [SPEAKER_00]: Beverly Hills Cup 3, you play...
[00:32:47] [SPEAKER_00]: Hey!
[00:32:48] [SPEAKER_00]: Right, you were a man attending a theme park.
[00:32:52] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:32:52] [SPEAKER_00]: Right.
[00:32:53] [SPEAKER_00]: Disappointed man.
[00:32:54] [SPEAKER_01]: Yes.
[00:32:55] [SPEAKER_01]: That's your role now.
[00:32:57] [SPEAKER_01]: Thank you, George.
[00:32:58] [SPEAKER_01]: That's not an all...
[00:32:58] [SPEAKER_01]: Is that a mosh?
[00:32:59] [SPEAKER_00]: I can see how your UCB experience
[00:33:01] [SPEAKER_00]: has been paying off.
[00:33:02] [SPEAKER_00]: Hey!
[00:33:04] [SPEAKER_00]: Hey!
[00:33:04] [SPEAKER_00]: Okay, so that performance and Berenbapanoida
[00:33:07] [SPEAKER_00]: and LESS I am wrong are the only two performances
[00:33:09] [SPEAKER_00]: in which you have not played yourself.
[00:33:11] [SPEAKER_00]: Other things like the OC, Just Shoot Me,
[00:33:14] [SPEAKER_00]: you come on as George Lucas director of Phantom Manus.
[00:33:18] [SPEAKER_00]: Sure.
[00:33:19] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, in the OC, you hire the character of Zach
[00:33:21] [SPEAKER_03]: to work with you at Lucasfilm.
[00:33:23] [SPEAKER_01]: I was just pretending that we were just acting.
[00:33:25] [SPEAKER_03]: You didn't actually hire him?
[00:33:27] [SPEAKER_03]: Nope.
[00:33:28] [SPEAKER_03]: Are you exacting about who you hire
[00:33:30] [SPEAKER_03]: at Lucasfilm?
[00:33:31] [SPEAKER_01]: Yes.
[00:33:31] [SPEAKER_01]: We only hire the best.
[00:33:32] [SPEAKER_01]: You know, we hire good people.
[00:33:34] [SPEAKER_01]: Because...
[00:33:34] [SPEAKER_01]: Like Rick McCallum, for example.
[00:33:36] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, let's talk about Rick McCallum.
[00:33:37] [SPEAKER_01]: Let's talk about tricky Rick McCallum.
[00:33:38] [SPEAKER_01]: Rick's the best.
[00:33:39] [SPEAKER_01]: Why are you calling him tricky Rick?
[00:33:40] [SPEAKER_01]: I don't know.
[00:33:40] [SPEAKER_01]: I like Nick names and he seems a little tricky.
[00:33:42] [SPEAKER_01]: You have to be a good producer.
[00:33:44] [SPEAKER_01]: You know who's tricky?
[00:33:45] [SPEAKER_01]: Well, he gets a job done.
[00:33:46] [SPEAKER_01]: You know who's tricky is Senator Palpatine.
[00:33:48] [SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
[00:33:49] [SPEAKER_01]: Well, let's talk about Senator Palpatine.
[00:33:51] [SPEAKER_01]: Well, there are too many threats.
[00:33:52] [SPEAKER_03]: There's a lot...
[00:33:53] [SPEAKER_03]: No, no, there's always going to be too many threats.
[00:33:54] [SPEAKER_03]: There's 14 minutes left and I gotta go.
[00:33:56] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm real busy.
[00:33:57] [SPEAKER_03]: Okay.
[00:33:58] [SPEAKER_03]: The thing about Senator Palpatine
[00:33:59] [SPEAKER_03]: is he seems to have a lot of analogs to current and former events.
[00:34:04] [SPEAKER_03]: Were you trying to do a George Bush thing
[00:34:06] [SPEAKER_03]: or were you just doing a hit?
[00:34:07] [SPEAKER_01]: Oh yeah, episode three.
[00:34:08] [SPEAKER_01]: I fully admit and I've said this before publicly,
[00:34:10] [SPEAKER_01]: episode three is a Gulf War II whole scenario.
[00:34:14] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:34:14] [SPEAKER_01]: Definitely Shades of George Bush.
[00:34:16] [SPEAKER_01]: I definitely had political things to say
[00:34:18] [SPEAKER_01]: and these films aren't just...
[00:34:22] [SPEAKER_00]: That's my Star Wars card trader app.
[00:34:24] [SPEAKER_00]: Trade was just accepted.
[00:34:25] [SPEAKER_00]: I'm excited.
[00:34:25] [SPEAKER_00]: It means I completed my gold set.
[00:34:27] [SPEAKER_00]: Thank you.
[00:34:27] [SPEAKER_00]: Wow, you completed your gold set?
[00:34:28] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I've gotten every gold card now.
[00:34:30] [SPEAKER_03]: That's absolutely insane.
[00:34:31] [SPEAKER_03]: I have like 14 gold cards.
[00:34:32] [SPEAKER_01]: So you hate these movies but you've got...
[00:34:34] [SPEAKER_01]: You trade gold cards about episodes one, two and three.
[00:34:37] [SPEAKER_00]: We love and hate these movies.
[00:34:38] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's a very complicated relationship.
[00:34:40] [SPEAKER_03]: Anyway, you're saying that it copies a total George Bush thing.
[00:34:43] [SPEAKER_03]: It's just a rip off thing.
[00:34:44] [SPEAKER_01]: Well, he's a little bit Bush, a little bit Cheney
[00:34:46] [SPEAKER_01]: because he's also clever, you know?
[00:34:48] [SPEAKER_03]: I see what you're saying.
[00:34:48] [SPEAKER_03]: That's some pretty harsh satire.
[00:34:50] [SPEAKER_01]: Well, you know, the comedy of episode one is very...
[00:34:55] [SPEAKER_01]: So episode one's a comedy?
[00:34:57] [SPEAKER_01]: Episode one...
[00:34:57] [SPEAKER_00]: Would you designate episode one as a comedy?
[00:35:00] [SPEAKER_01]: No, I would say it's half comedy.
[00:35:02] [SPEAKER_01]: It's really a boy's adventure.
[00:35:04] [SPEAKER_01]: Adventure comedy.
[00:35:04] [SPEAKER_01]: Adventure comedy.
[00:35:05] [SPEAKER_01]: Second one's a romantic drama.
[00:35:07] [SPEAKER_01]: So first one, you're going through the phases of life, the sages.
[00:35:11] [SPEAKER_01]: The first movie is about a little boy, a boy's adventure.
[00:35:15] [SPEAKER_00]: Things are fun and exciting.
[00:35:16] [SPEAKER_00]: Boy's life adventure.
[00:35:17] [SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
[00:35:17] [SPEAKER_01]: So the comedy reflects that.
[00:35:19] [SPEAKER_01]: The second movie is a romance.
[00:35:21] [SPEAKER_01]: This is the adolescence.
[00:35:22] [SPEAKER_01]: We're in teenage romance.
[00:35:23] [SPEAKER_01]: It's moodier, hormonal.
[00:35:24] [SPEAKER_01]: That checks out.
[00:35:25] [SPEAKER_01]: The third movie, we're in adulthood.
[00:35:28] [SPEAKER_01]: So the stakes are very real.
[00:35:30] [SPEAKER_01]: George is running me over.
[00:35:31] [SPEAKER_00]: When you get adulthood, you just realize that everything's terrible.
[00:35:34] [SPEAKER_01]: Well, they say satire is what closes on Saturday night.
[00:35:37] [SPEAKER_01]: Right?
[00:35:37] [SPEAKER_01]: Whatever?
[00:35:38] [SPEAKER_01]: Live?
[00:35:39] [SPEAKER_01]: No, on Saturday...
[00:35:41] [SPEAKER_01]: Satire is what closes on...
[00:35:42] [SPEAKER_01]: What's that phrase about satire?
[00:35:43] [SPEAKER_01]: I don't know.
[00:35:44] [SPEAKER_00]: George, I have another question.
[00:35:46] [SPEAKER_01]: Google a phrase.
[00:35:46] [SPEAKER_01]: Satire is what closes on...
[00:35:47] [SPEAKER_01]: I bet Google will finish the phrase.
[00:35:49] [SPEAKER_00]: Because usually the five to one spot on Saturday live,
[00:35:51] [SPEAKER_00]: they don't close a satire.
[00:35:52] [SPEAKER_01]: Satire is what closes on...
[00:35:53] [SPEAKER_03]: On Saturday night.
[00:35:54] [SPEAKER_03]: I got the phrase right.
[00:35:55] [SPEAKER_03]: Usually they close with randomness.
[00:35:56] [SPEAKER_03]: So George is Kauffman after his place.
[00:35:58] [SPEAKER_03]: George is Kauffman.
[00:35:59] [SPEAKER_01]: Strike up a band.
[00:35:59] [SPEAKER_01]: Another great George.
[00:36:01] [SPEAKER_03]: Closed in Philadelphia.
[00:36:02] [SPEAKER_01]: George said it.
[00:36:02] [SPEAKER_01]: George said it again.
[00:36:03] [SPEAKER_00]: So there are given...
[00:36:04] [SPEAKER_00]: The thing you're quoting is a line about how satire is unsuccessful.
[00:36:09] [SPEAKER_01]: It was not liked by audiences?
[00:36:11] [SPEAKER_01]: Well, that it's a risky proposition because a lot of times people don't want to hear
[00:36:14] [SPEAKER_01]: the harsh truths.
[00:36:15] [SPEAKER_01]: However, I'd say that I proved them wrong because the satire in episode three
[00:36:20] [SPEAKER_01]: very successful in the box office.
[00:36:22] [SPEAKER_03]: Why do these movies look like hot garbage?
[00:36:24] [SPEAKER_03]: Great question.
[00:36:26] [SPEAKER_03]: They're full of CGI nonsense.
[00:36:27] [SPEAKER_03]: The blue screen is really terrible.
[00:36:29] [SPEAKER_01]: If I were you to tell me what's CGI and what's not.
[00:36:32] [SPEAKER_03]: Everything's CGI except for the...
[00:36:34] [SPEAKER_03]: You just told us you had a hard out.
[00:36:35] [SPEAKER_00]: We don't have time to tell you every...
[00:36:37] [SPEAKER_01]: Name one thing that doesn't look real.
[00:36:39] [SPEAKER_01]: The pillars.
[00:36:41] [SPEAKER_01]: Okay, so you both named a different thing which already proves my point.
[00:36:44] [SPEAKER_00]: It proves your point that there's more than one thing that doesn't look real.
[00:36:47] [SPEAKER_00]: I agree with him on George R. Banks.
[00:36:48] [SPEAKER_00]: I agree with him on the pillars.
[00:36:50] [SPEAKER_01]: All right, George R. Banks was real.
[00:36:51] [SPEAKER_01]: He's a real character.
[00:36:53] [SPEAKER_00]: You've made him real now.
[00:36:54] [SPEAKER_00]: You've summoned him into existence.
[00:36:55] [SPEAKER_00]: We know.
[00:36:56] [SPEAKER_01]: No, no, I don't just mean that.
[00:36:57] [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, when you watch the movie, he looks real.
[00:37:01] [SPEAKER_01]: Like, oh, I'll specify.
[00:37:02] [SPEAKER_01]: He looks like what a Gungan really looks like.
[00:37:04] [SPEAKER_01]: Now have you ever been to Naboo?
[00:37:06] [SPEAKER_00]: No, because it's not a real planet, George.
[00:37:07] [SPEAKER_01]: Okay, well, are you a real person?
[00:37:08] [SPEAKER_00]: Yes, I'm a real person.
[00:37:09] [SPEAKER_01]: But you've never been to Naboo.
[00:37:10] [SPEAKER_03]: Look, here's the thing.
[00:37:11] [SPEAKER_03]: We're never going to nail George to the ground in terms of admitting that
[00:37:14] [SPEAKER_03]: the movies are bad, right?
[00:37:16] [SPEAKER_03]: Because you think the movies are bad.
[00:37:17] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm not trying to do that.
[00:37:17] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm just trying to make sense of it.
[00:37:18] [SPEAKER_01]: It's not my words.
[00:37:19] [SPEAKER_01]: It's the words of the AV club.
[00:37:21] [SPEAKER_03]: My former employer.
[00:37:22] [SPEAKER_02]: Why don't we ask George about, because we watched those featurettes
[00:37:26] [SPEAKER_02]: about the behind the scenes.
[00:37:27] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, sure.
[00:37:28] [SPEAKER_02]: And basically all the animators and all the people who were putting together.
[00:37:33] [SPEAKER_02]: They worked really hard.
[00:37:34] [SPEAKER_02]: A lot of what went into the film, like, you know, all the pre-production staging.
[00:37:40] [SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
[00:37:41] [SPEAKER_00]: What is your relationship like with those people?
[00:37:44] [SPEAKER_01]: Great.
[00:37:44] [SPEAKER_01]: They love me.
[00:37:46] [SPEAKER_01]: We had a great time making the movies.
[00:37:47] [SPEAKER_01]: It's hard work.
[00:37:48] [SPEAKER_01]: A lot of talented people.
[00:37:49] [SPEAKER_01]: But I think if it's not behind the scenes, it's not on screen.
[00:37:53] [SPEAKER_00]: George, you finance these films yourself?
[00:37:55] [SPEAKER_00]: Indy.
[00:37:57] [SPEAKER_03]: Well, you finance them with sales with Mattel or whoever.
[00:38:01] [SPEAKER_03]: It was Mattel.
[00:38:02] [SPEAKER_03]: Hasbro.
[00:38:02] [SPEAKER_03]: Hasbro.
[00:38:04] [SPEAKER_00]: You have built a giant ranch which houses...
[00:38:07] [SPEAKER_00]: I walk a ranch.
[00:38:08] [SPEAKER_01]: ...Kennar.
[00:38:08] [SPEAKER_01]: Also originally, Kennar.
[00:38:10] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh, I see.
[00:38:10] [SPEAKER_03]: Kennar helped to make toys as well.
[00:38:12] [SPEAKER_03]: Kennar money.
[00:38:12] [SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
[00:38:13] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[00:38:14] [SPEAKER_00]: Kennar folded into Hasbro after Phantom Mask because the sales were disappointing.
[00:38:18] [SPEAKER_00]: That's a fact that Kennar was a sub-brand of Hasbro.
[00:38:21] [SPEAKER_00]: Kennar was originally...
[00:38:21] [SPEAKER_00]: All right, we don't need to get into the cut.
[00:38:23] [SPEAKER_01]: You're saying that Star Wars toys were disappointing in sales?
[00:38:26] [SPEAKER_00]: They were overproduced, yes, and they failed to meet expectations.
[00:38:28] [SPEAKER_01]: No, but you're saying that we've never made money on Kennar's Star Wars toys
[00:38:32] [SPEAKER_01]: and they don't make them?
[00:38:32] [SPEAKER_00]: I'm not saying that you never...
[00:38:34] [SPEAKER_00]: George, this is not the time for sidebars.
[00:38:37] [SPEAKER_00]: You have a hard hour.
[00:38:37] [SPEAKER_00]: I'll show you my...
[00:38:39] [SPEAKER_00]: I'll show you some stats.
[00:38:40] [SPEAKER_00]: I'll show you some numbers.
[00:38:41] [SPEAKER_00]: I'll show you...
[00:38:42] [SPEAKER_00]: I'll show you some numbers later.
[00:38:42] [SPEAKER_00]: I'll do my wall later.
[00:38:43] [SPEAKER_00]: I'll take a look.
[00:38:44] [SPEAKER_00]: George, this is my question to you.
[00:38:46] [SPEAKER_00]: You build this ranch.
[00:38:48] [SPEAKER_00]: It houses multiple post-production facilities.
[00:38:51] [SPEAKER_00]: We help lots of films.
[00:38:51] [SPEAKER_00]: Special effects studios.
[00:38:52] [SPEAKER_00]: This is Skywalker Sound.
[00:38:54] [SPEAKER_00]: ILM, THX.
[00:38:54] [SPEAKER_00]: All these companies that you've created with regular employees of yours.
[00:38:59] [SPEAKER_00]: You assign them to work on your film in which you hire Tricky Rick McCollum,
[00:39:02] [SPEAKER_00]: a man who has self-identified as having the job of making sure you never have to
[00:39:07] [SPEAKER_00]: say...
[00:39:07] [SPEAKER_00]: He never has to say no to you.
[00:39:08] [SPEAKER_00]: I hate that word.
[00:39:09] [SPEAKER_01]: Every single thing you want.
[00:39:10] [SPEAKER_01]: That's the first time I've heard that word in decades.
[00:39:12] [SPEAKER_00]: Okay, so you had complete power...
[00:39:14] [SPEAKER_03]: Never said no previously on this podcast.
[00:39:16] [SPEAKER_03]: Many times.
[00:39:17] [SPEAKER_00]: Also, Darth Vader said it for 15 seconds at the end of the end of the set.
[00:39:20] [SPEAKER_00]: He said the longest no of all time.
[00:39:21] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, because it's the worst thing.
[00:39:22] [SPEAKER_01]: It's the worst thing.
[00:39:23] [SPEAKER_01]: So that's the real tragedy.
[00:39:24] [SPEAKER_01]: That's how we know this is a comeback.
[00:39:25] [SPEAKER_01]: I also didn't listen on that recording session.
[00:39:27] [SPEAKER_00]: Well maybe you should listen to it because it was a bad take.
[00:39:29] [SPEAKER_01]: No, I said, look, let's get James W. Jones in here.
[00:39:32] [SPEAKER_01]: Let's have him say it, but I don't want to hear it.
[00:39:34] [SPEAKER_01]: And when we edit it, I don't want to hear it.
[00:39:35] [SPEAKER_01]: I have an app on my phone whenever that word comes up.
[00:39:37] [SPEAKER_01]: On a podcast or anything, it deletes it.
[00:39:39] [SPEAKER_01]: I hate that word.
[00:39:40] [SPEAKER_00]: Well, News Flash, his line reading could have used a note.
[00:39:42] [SPEAKER_00]: George, my point here is...
[00:39:43] [SPEAKER_00]: I don't even like hearing the word...
[00:39:44] [SPEAKER_01]: James W. Jones, what on a note?
[00:39:45] [SPEAKER_01]: I don't even like hearing the word note because it has a word no in it.
[00:39:48] [SPEAKER_01]: George, yeah.
[00:39:49] [SPEAKER_01]: I hate that word.
[00:39:49] [SPEAKER_01]: I don't want to hear it again.
[00:39:50] [SPEAKER_01]: Please don't say it anymore.
[00:39:51] [SPEAKER_01]: Say yes, I like that.
[00:39:52] [SPEAKER_00]: Yes, George.
[00:39:53] [SPEAKER_00]: You had complete power over this entire film.
[00:39:56] [SPEAKER_00]: Everyone worked for you, working for companies that you founded.
[00:39:59] [SPEAKER_00]: You created new technology to be able to control every single element,
[00:40:02] [SPEAKER_00]: spliced different performances together into the same frame.
[00:40:04] [SPEAKER_00]: And the films are all about how absolute power corrupts absolutely.
[00:40:09] [SPEAKER_00]: How the Jedi's are powerful and it has made them arrogant and blind.
[00:40:12] [SPEAKER_00]: How Palpatine has quest for power is one that's running else under the buzz.
[00:40:16] [SPEAKER_01]: I see where you're going.
[00:40:16] [SPEAKER_01]: You're trying to say that there's a level of irony working here,
[00:40:19] [SPEAKER_01]: but I'm saying there's some satire there.
[00:40:21] [SPEAKER_01]: And if there's criticism you have of it,
[00:40:23] [SPEAKER_01]: I anticipated it and I knew it and it's folded in there.
[00:40:27] [SPEAKER_01]: Your reactions are valid, but they're also exactly what I wanted.
[00:40:30] [SPEAKER_03]: He's pulling every rug out from under you.
[00:40:31] [SPEAKER_00]: Your argument is that you're satirizing yourself.
[00:40:33] [SPEAKER_00]: I can't criticize the film because you were already satirizing your own.
[00:40:37] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm saying the films criticize themselves.
[00:40:38] [SPEAKER_01]: You don't need to criticize them.
[00:40:40] [SPEAKER_01]: The criticism is baked into the cake.
[00:40:42] [SPEAKER_01]: If you didn't like something, it's because I didn't want you to like it.
[00:40:45] [SPEAKER_01]: Because I wanted you to have a bad feeling about something
[00:40:47] [SPEAKER_01]: so that you would feel the tragedy or so you would feel.
[00:40:50] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm sorry that you wanted to feel great about the saga
[00:40:52] [SPEAKER_01]: of an innocent little boy whose mother sold into slavery
[00:40:55] [SPEAKER_01]: and then he has a terrible life and causes problems.
[00:40:58] [SPEAKER_03]: This is kind of like what if John Stuart had ever gotten like Dick Cheney
[00:41:01] [SPEAKER_03]: to come to the Daily Show.
[00:41:02] [SPEAKER_03]: I feel like the confrontation would have just been too emotional on one side.
[00:41:05] [SPEAKER_03]: This is okay, look.
[00:41:07] [SPEAKER_03]: And defensive on the other.
[00:41:08] [SPEAKER_03]: You're welcome.
[00:41:09] [SPEAKER_00]: Thank you for being here, George.
[00:41:11] [SPEAKER_01]: Do you know what I was saying you're welcome for?
[00:41:13] [SPEAKER_01]: What?
[00:41:14] [SPEAKER_01]: You thanking me for liking these movies.
[00:41:18] [SPEAKER_01]: You were saying you're...
[00:41:20] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm saying you're welcome to you saying thank you to me
[00:41:22] [SPEAKER_01]: for making these movies because you love them.
[00:41:23] [SPEAKER_01]: Okay, George.
[00:41:25] [SPEAKER_03]: Do you have any other questions you want to ask?
[00:41:27] [SPEAKER_00]: Look, unfortunately you have a hard out.
[00:41:29] [SPEAKER_00]: I can't believe I'm saying this, but I think we have so many...
[00:41:32] [SPEAKER_00]: Where are we at?
[00:41:32] [SPEAKER_00]: Ask me one more prequel question about Episode 3.
[00:41:35] [SPEAKER_00]: I'll ask you one more question, but I just want to...
[00:41:37] [SPEAKER_00]: I can't believe I'm saying this.
[00:41:38] [SPEAKER_00]: I'm going to throw this out.
[00:41:39] [SPEAKER_00]: We're doing a live finale show next Monday.
[00:41:42] [SPEAKER_00]: It's at Union Hall.
[00:41:43] [SPEAKER_00]: We're going to watch Revenge of the Sith.
[00:41:44] [SPEAKER_00]: We always end our season with a live commentary.
[00:41:46] [SPEAKER_03]: It's happening the day this episode drops, I believe.
[00:41:48] [SPEAKER_00]: Yes, this episode will be dropping on the Monday
[00:41:50] [SPEAKER_00]: where that night at 7.30 at Union Hall for $8,
[00:41:54] [SPEAKER_00]: we're going to be doing a live commentary with a lot of special guests.
[00:41:57] [SPEAKER_00]: Would you have any interest in coming with us
[00:41:59] [SPEAKER_00]: and doing the commentary with us so we can get into this more?
[00:42:02] [SPEAKER_00]: Because I think I need a week to calm down.
[00:42:04] [SPEAKER_00]: You really need to calm down.
[00:42:05] [SPEAKER_00]: I need to calm down, come into it with fresh eyes
[00:42:07] [SPEAKER_00]: and just really try to understand you
[00:42:08] [SPEAKER_00]: and it'll be a longer format.
[00:42:10] [SPEAKER_00]: We'll be able to go into it in depth.
[00:42:11] [SPEAKER_01]: Listen, you're saying a lot of words.
[00:42:12] [SPEAKER_01]: All you needed to say was that you're showing Episode 3
[00:42:14] [SPEAKER_01]: and I'm there because it's a great movie.
[00:42:15] [SPEAKER_01]: I'd love to watch it.
[00:42:16] [SPEAKER_01]: Bank.
[00:42:16] [SPEAKER_00]: Ladies and gentlemen, George Lucas will be
[00:42:18] [SPEAKER_00]: at our live show at Union Hall.
[00:42:20] [SPEAKER_00]: And he won't be the only guest.
[00:42:21] [SPEAKER_00]: Monday, November 23rd.
[00:42:22] [SPEAKER_00]: Other guests are surprised.
[00:42:23] [SPEAKER_00]: I haven't told David because if I tell David what I have planned,
[00:42:25] [SPEAKER_00]: he'll tell me not to do it.
[00:42:27] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I'm a little afraid.
[00:42:29] [SPEAKER_03]: Griffin was texting me last night when we were planning
[00:42:31] [SPEAKER_03]: and I was like, so what's going to happen?
[00:42:32] [SPEAKER_03]: You're like, I want to catch you off guard.
[00:42:34] [SPEAKER_03]: That was how he put it.
[00:42:34] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, David knows nothing of what I have planned.
[00:42:37] [SPEAKER_03]: Right.
[00:42:37] [SPEAKER_01]: But George, you will be there.
[00:42:38] [SPEAKER_01]: Well, I don't know now.
[00:42:39] [SPEAKER_01]: I don't know what you have planned.
[00:42:41] [SPEAKER_00]: We're just going to watch the movie.
[00:42:44] [SPEAKER_01]: Alright.
[00:42:45] [SPEAKER_01]: And maybe some other stuff.
[00:42:46] [SPEAKER_01]: Brian DePalma is not going to be there, is he?
[00:42:48] [SPEAKER_00]: What do you...
[00:42:48] [SPEAKER_00]: Do you want him to not be there?
[00:42:49] [SPEAKER_01]: I prefer not.
[00:42:50] [SPEAKER_01]: I love Brian, but I prefer if he wasn't there.
[00:42:52] [SPEAKER_00]: I lived in the same building as him growing up.
[00:42:53] [SPEAKER_00]: Really?
[00:42:54] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, he did.
[00:42:55] [SPEAKER_00]: He was in the old pals.
[00:42:55] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, he spent a lot of drunken elevator rides with Brian DePalma.
[00:42:58] [SPEAKER_03]: What's everyone's favorite Brian DePalma movie?
[00:43:01] [SPEAKER_03]: Fan of the Paradise?
[00:43:03] [SPEAKER_03]: Okay.
[00:43:06] [SPEAKER_01]: Hard to say.
[00:43:07] [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, Untouchables is good.
[00:43:10] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm probably a blowout fan myself.
[00:43:12] [SPEAKER_01]: Maybe Body Hew.
[00:43:13] [SPEAKER_01]: He makes good movies.
[00:43:14] [SPEAKER_00]: Okay, George, just to put some sort of button on this,
[00:43:18] [SPEAKER_00]: because we're going to talk more about episode three next week.
[00:43:21] [SPEAKER_00]: And by next week I mean this night for the people
[00:43:24] [SPEAKER_00]: who are listening to it on the day it drops.
[00:43:26] [SPEAKER_00]: Correct.
[00:43:27] [SPEAKER_00]: I don't even know why I'm asking this.
[00:43:32] [SPEAKER_00]: Ask the question.
[00:43:32] [SPEAKER_00]: It's masochistic, but as you said, you sold the film to Disney.
[00:43:36] [SPEAKER_00]: You sold the entire company.
[00:43:38] [SPEAKER_00]: The franchise.
[00:43:40] [SPEAKER_01]: Everything except Jar Jar.
[00:43:41] [SPEAKER_01]: I kept him.
[00:43:43] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:43:43] [SPEAKER_01]: Crazy.
[00:43:44] [SPEAKER_01]: So I could do my show monthly at UCB East and I was like,
[00:43:46] [SPEAKER_01]: actually that was a condition of Disney's.
[00:43:49] [SPEAKER_01]: They said we'll buy them, but not if it includes this.
[00:43:52] [SPEAKER_01]: That's just sure.
[00:43:53] [SPEAKER_01]: That's what I wanted anyway.
[00:43:54] [SPEAKER_01]: It was sort of a great moment.
[00:43:56] [SPEAKER_01]: We both realized what we wanted and didn't want.
[00:43:59] [SPEAKER_00]: Well, I think it's very telling that they said that
[00:44:01] [SPEAKER_00]: and I think you're not reading into the subtext of that
[00:44:03] [SPEAKER_00]: demand on their part.
[00:44:04] [SPEAKER_00]: But George, sold it to Disney for a large sum of money.
[00:44:08] [SPEAKER_00]: What, 2.6 billion?
[00:44:09] [SPEAKER_00]: Something around there?
[00:44:10] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[00:44:11] [SPEAKER_00]: Which you donated mostly a charity?
[00:44:12] [SPEAKER_00]: A lot of money to charity.
[00:44:13] [SPEAKER_00]: I'm a good guy.
[00:44:14] [SPEAKER_00]: I think the question we would be remiss to not ask.
[00:44:17] [SPEAKER_00]: It's rare to hear people say I'm a good guy.
[00:44:19] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[00:44:19] [SPEAKER_00]: About themselves.
[00:44:20] [SPEAKER_00]: It's weird to self-imly that.
[00:44:21] [SPEAKER_01]: Dialogue's better if it's clear.
[00:44:23] [SPEAKER_00]: Go on.
[00:44:24] [SPEAKER_00]: George, the question I think everyone wants answered
[00:44:27] [SPEAKER_00]: and we have you here as a guest.
[00:44:29] [SPEAKER_00]: As much as I'm afraid of the answer, I have to ask it.
[00:44:35] [SPEAKER_00]: Is there any chance of an episode 4?
[00:44:36] [SPEAKER_00]: Disney has the franchise now.
[00:44:38] [SPEAKER_00]: One would think that they might want to kickstart it up again.
[00:44:40] [SPEAKER_00]: Is there any chance of making episode 4?
[00:44:43] [SPEAKER_01]: Well, I'm not involved in it, but episode 7 is coming out in December.
[00:44:48] [SPEAKER_03]: Episode 7?
[00:44:48] [SPEAKER_03]: What are you doing?
[00:44:49] [SPEAKER_03]: So they're just skipping 4, 5, 6?
[00:44:51] [SPEAKER_01]: I pitched some ideas.
[00:44:53] [SPEAKER_01]: J. Ray Abrams is directing it, but I have not had it yet.
[00:44:56] [SPEAKER_00]: Hold on one second.
[00:44:57] [SPEAKER_00]: They're coming out with a script in December?
[00:44:58] [SPEAKER_00]: So they're in pre-production?
[00:45:00] [SPEAKER_01]: No, no.
[00:45:00] [SPEAKER_01]: It's done apparently and it's going to come out.
[00:45:02] [SPEAKER_01]: I'll be seeing it like an audience member with everybody else.
[00:45:05] [SPEAKER_00]: Wait, so you're going from episode 3 straight to episode 7?
[00:45:08] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, they're going to fill in the blanks later?
[00:45:09] [SPEAKER_03]: That's so weird.
[00:45:12] [SPEAKER_03]: Good what there, Ben?
[00:45:13] [SPEAKER_01]: Well, I mean...
[00:45:14] [SPEAKER_01]: What?
[00:45:17] [SPEAKER_01]: The episodes 4, 5 and 6 are available on Blu-ray.
[00:45:22] [SPEAKER_01]: Those are all... you can see those.
[00:45:23] [SPEAKER_00]: George, I know this has not been a very civil interview
[00:45:26] [SPEAKER_00]: and I've been fucking with you a lot, but this is not funny.
[00:45:28] [SPEAKER_00]: Ben's got something.
[00:45:29] [SPEAKER_00]: Ben's got something.
[00:45:30] [SPEAKER_00]: Hold Ben?
[00:45:31] [SPEAKER_03]: Hold Ben's got something.
[00:45:32] [SPEAKER_03]: Hold Ben's peeping on something.
[00:45:35] [SPEAKER_02]: There's an episode 4.
[00:45:36] [SPEAKER_02]: No, there isn't.
[00:45:38] [SPEAKER_02]: How would we not know about that?
[00:45:39] [SPEAKER_03]: Griffin, you're not facing his screen.
[00:45:41] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm seeing it.
[00:45:41] [SPEAKER_03]: There's a Darth Vader mask.
[00:45:42] [SPEAKER_03]: It's called A New Hope.
[00:45:43] [SPEAKER_02]: It came out in 1977.
[00:45:46] [SPEAKER_02]: That's impossible, Ben.
[00:45:47] [SPEAKER_00]: That's 30 years earlier.
[00:45:48] [SPEAKER_00]: I swear to God, that's impossible.
[00:45:50] [SPEAKER_03]: I hate bits, but we have talked a lot about there's one movie
[00:45:53] [SPEAKER_03]: in your canon that we kept forgetting the name of?
[00:45:55] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, but I thought it was another character drama.
[00:45:57] [SPEAKER_00]: Guys, there's two others.
[00:45:58] [SPEAKER_00]: Well, there's like THM1-139-5.
[00:46:00] [SPEAKER_01]: The Empire Shrines Black 5.
[00:46:01] [SPEAKER_00]: What are you talking about?
[00:46:02] [SPEAKER_01]: Actually, though, you've got the dates wrong on that.
[00:46:04] [SPEAKER_01]: Those were rough drafts of movies that came out with.
[00:46:07] [SPEAKER_01]: The real episodes 4, 5 and 6 came out in the 90s.
[00:46:10] [SPEAKER_00]: Do you understand how hard it is to believe anything you say
[00:46:12] [SPEAKER_00]: with answers like that?
[00:46:14] [SPEAKER_01]: What are you talking about?
[00:46:15] [SPEAKER_01]: I understand we're confused.
[00:46:16] [SPEAKER_01]: In the 1990s, I finished the original trilogy
[00:46:19] [SPEAKER_01]: just a few years before Phantom Menace.
[00:46:23] [SPEAKER_01]: A New Hope is Episode 4.
[00:46:24] [SPEAKER_01]: Empire Strikes Back is Episode 5.
[00:46:26] [SPEAKER_01]: Return of the Jedi is Episode 6.
[00:46:28] [SPEAKER_01]: They came out the same year.
[00:46:29] [SPEAKER_01]: I released three movies in one year, brand new.
[00:46:32] [SPEAKER_01]: And those are the movies.
[00:46:33] [SPEAKER_01]: I did test screenings in 1977
[00:46:36] [SPEAKER_01]: and the early 1980s of Episodes 4, 5 and 6.
[00:46:39] [SPEAKER_01]: They went very well.
[00:46:40] [SPEAKER_01]: Probably the most successful test screenings
[00:46:42] [SPEAKER_01]: in the history film.
[00:46:43] [SPEAKER_03]: But you really refined them in 1996.
[00:46:45] [SPEAKER_01]: The actual movies themselves came out in the 1990s
[00:46:47] [SPEAKER_01]: and that's why you might be confused.
[00:46:48] [SPEAKER_00]: So just to clarify,
[00:46:49] [SPEAKER_00]: the first film chronologically came out in 1999.
[00:46:53] [SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
[00:46:54] [SPEAKER_00]: Second came out in 2002.
[00:46:56] [SPEAKER_00]: Third came out in 2005.
[00:46:58] [SPEAKER_00]: Oh, that's right.
[00:46:58] [SPEAKER_00]: In 1997...
[00:47:00] [SPEAKER_00]: That's right.
[00:47:00] [SPEAKER_00]: That's the year.
[00:47:01] [SPEAKER_00]: You released, quote-unquote,
[00:47:03] [SPEAKER_00]: three movies simultaneously
[00:47:04] [SPEAKER_00]: that were shot in the 70s and 80s.
[00:47:07] [SPEAKER_01]: That's right.
[00:47:07] [SPEAKER_01]: We shot them in the 70s,
[00:47:08] [SPEAKER_01]: but not all of them.
[00:47:09] [SPEAKER_01]: We finished them.
[00:47:10] [SPEAKER_01]: They took a long time to make.
[00:47:12] [SPEAKER_01]: We did some test screenings
[00:47:13] [SPEAKER_01]: that went very well in 1977.
[00:47:16] [SPEAKER_01]: We released for a second round of test screenings in 1978.
[00:47:18] [SPEAKER_01]: Then rather than completing the fourth one,
[00:47:20] [SPEAKER_01]: we said let's make the second and third one
[00:47:23] [SPEAKER_01]: do test screenings of those
[00:47:25] [SPEAKER_01]: and then eventually we'll release
[00:47:26] [SPEAKER_01]: the final version of those in 1997.
[00:47:28] [SPEAKER_00]: And now there's a seventh one coming out in a month.
[00:47:31] [SPEAKER_01]: But I don't have anything to do with that.
[00:47:32] [SPEAKER_01]: I see why you're confused.
[00:47:32] [SPEAKER_00]: But J.J. Abrams' creator Felicity directed it?
[00:47:34] [SPEAKER_01]: Creator Felicity,
[00:47:35] [SPEAKER_01]: a screenwriter of...
[00:47:38] [SPEAKER_01]: regarding Henry.
[00:47:39] [SPEAKER_01]: Joey Ride.
[00:47:41] [SPEAKER_01]: He wrote Joey Ride.
[00:47:43] [SPEAKER_01]: He wrote Army Got Him.
[00:47:43] [SPEAKER_03]: Can you process this, David?
[00:47:44] [SPEAKER_00]: This is huge.
[00:47:45] [SPEAKER_03]: You know, I just have one thing to say
[00:47:47] [SPEAKER_00]: which is that I hate bits.
[00:47:48] [SPEAKER_00]: Me too.
[00:47:49] [SPEAKER_00]: George, just quickly.
[00:47:50] [SPEAKER_00]: Just very quickly.
[00:47:51] [SPEAKER_00]: I know you have to leave.
[00:47:52] [SPEAKER_00]: Just because I was so much information
[00:47:54] [SPEAKER_00]: about the process at once.
[00:47:54] [SPEAKER_00]: We can keep talking for a second
[00:47:55] [SPEAKER_03]: after George goes down.
[00:47:56] [SPEAKER_00]: Just one time quickly to process
[00:47:59] [SPEAKER_00]: and then you can leave.
[00:48:00] [SPEAKER_00]: What are the three titles of these films?
[00:48:01] [SPEAKER_00]: Because there was a lot to process at once.
[00:48:03] [SPEAKER_00]: I need to hear the new...
[00:48:04] [SPEAKER_00]: I just found out that
[00:48:05] [SPEAKER_00]: three new Star Wars movies exist.
[00:48:07] [SPEAKER_00]: Star Wars, a new hope,
[00:48:08] [SPEAKER_01]: the special edition.
[00:48:09] [SPEAKER_01]: Star Wars, the Empress Strikes Back,
[00:48:10] [SPEAKER_01]: the special edition.
[00:48:11] [SPEAKER_01]: Star Wars, Return of the Jedi,
[00:48:13] [SPEAKER_01]: special edition.
[00:48:13] [SPEAKER_01]: Those are the three titles of the three.
[00:48:15] [SPEAKER_00]: You're a monster.
[00:48:16] [SPEAKER_00]: Okay, thank you for being here.
[00:48:17] [SPEAKER_00]: You are a new source for me.
[00:48:17] [SPEAKER_01]: And they follow the same exact plot lines
[00:48:19] [SPEAKER_01]: as the prequels.
[00:48:21] [SPEAKER_01]: They mirror them.
[00:48:22] [SPEAKER_01]: I did them ring style.
[00:48:24] [SPEAKER_00]: I don't even know what to say.
[00:48:26] [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, I mean ring style...
[00:48:27] [SPEAKER_00]: Is Darth Vader in them?
[00:48:28] [SPEAKER_01]: Wait, is Jimmy Smiths in them?
[00:48:30] [SPEAKER_01]: No.
[00:48:31] [SPEAKER_00]: Dexter Jester?
[00:48:32] [SPEAKER_01]: No.
[00:48:32] [SPEAKER_01]: Wato?
[00:48:33] [SPEAKER_01]: No.
[00:48:34] [SPEAKER_01]: Cebola?
[00:48:35] [SPEAKER_01]: No.
[00:48:35] [SPEAKER_01]: Grugra?
[00:48:36] [SPEAKER_02]: So none of our fair characters...
[00:48:37] [SPEAKER_02]: Wait, wait, wait.
[00:48:38] [SPEAKER_02]: I have a question.
[00:48:39] [SPEAKER_02]: What about this Chewbacca guy?
[00:48:40] [SPEAKER_01]: Is he in it?
[00:48:41] [SPEAKER_01]: Oh yeah, I brought Chewbacca back.
[00:48:42] [SPEAKER_00]: Goddamn it!
[00:48:43] [SPEAKER_00]: Are you fucking kidding?
[00:48:45] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:48:45] [SPEAKER_00]: Okay George, thank you for being here.
[00:48:47] [SPEAKER_00]: We'll see you next week.
[00:48:48] [SPEAKER_01]: First movie's about...
[00:48:49] [SPEAKER_01]: Hey, who's this kid?
[00:48:50] [SPEAKER_01]: Maybe someone's...
[00:48:51] [SPEAKER_01]: Get out of here.
[00:48:51] [SPEAKER_01]: Maybe someone's special arm.
[00:48:53] [SPEAKER_01]: Get out of here.
[00:48:53] [SPEAKER_01]: Is there any bad business?
[00:48:54] [SPEAKER_01]: Second movie, there's some bad business going on.
[00:48:56] [SPEAKER_01]: George.
[00:48:56] [SPEAKER_01]: Really bad business.
[00:48:57] [SPEAKER_01]: Wait, the romance and the second movie
[00:48:58] [SPEAKER_01]: is the romance and the first...
[00:49:00] [SPEAKER_01]: George, I can't contain my emotions right now.
[00:49:03] [SPEAKER_01]: You have to listen.
[00:49:04] [SPEAKER_01]: Get out of here.
[00:49:04] [SPEAKER_00]: November 23rd, we will see you live on stage
[00:49:07] [SPEAKER_00]: at Union Hall.
[00:49:08] [SPEAKER_00]: I can't...
[00:49:08] [SPEAKER_00]: Can I tell you one thing?
[00:49:10] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[00:49:10] [SPEAKER_00]: Just one thing.
[00:49:11] [SPEAKER_00]: Your parting words?
[00:49:12] [SPEAKER_00]: One thing.
[00:49:12] [SPEAKER_00]: I'm red with anger right now.
[00:49:13] [SPEAKER_00]: I look like producer Ben.
[00:49:15] [SPEAKER_01]: Scarlet with rage.
[00:49:16] [SPEAKER_01]: No, I should say that for when we watch the screen
[00:49:18] [SPEAKER_01]: because there's one thing I do want to point out,
[00:49:20] [SPEAKER_01]: a parallel in episode three,
[00:49:21] [SPEAKER_01]: but it's very complicated.
[00:49:23] [SPEAKER_01]: I just want to say thank you for devoting this podcast
[00:49:26] [SPEAKER_01]: to these films.
[00:49:27] [SPEAKER_01]: Films of George Lucas.
[00:49:28] [SPEAKER_01]: You're welcome.
[00:49:29] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm glad you enjoyed them so much.
[00:49:30] [SPEAKER_01]: I know that you think you didn't,
[00:49:32] [SPEAKER_01]: but clearly you did.
[00:49:34] [SPEAKER_01]: The real mystery was that you loved them all along.
[00:49:38] [SPEAKER_00]: Okay, great.
[00:49:39] [SPEAKER_00]: Thank you, George Lucas for being here.
[00:49:41] [SPEAKER_00]: When can people see your next talk show?
[00:49:43] [SPEAKER_01]: December 4th, we're going to be pre-celebrating
[00:49:46] [SPEAKER_01]: both Life Day and the...
[00:49:49] [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, that's another thing you should know.
[00:49:50] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm at Holiday Special.
[00:49:52] [SPEAKER_00]: You made a Holiday Special?
[00:49:54] [SPEAKER_01]: I wasn't actually involved.
[00:49:55] [SPEAKER_01]: It was kind of like a JJ-type project
[00:49:56] [SPEAKER_01]: where I wasn't actually involved,
[00:49:58] [SPEAKER_01]: but they still got similar to Episode 7,
[00:50:02] [SPEAKER_01]: Harrison Ford and Mark Hamlin and Carrie Fisher
[00:50:04] [SPEAKER_01]: were involved in the Holiday Special.
[00:50:05] [SPEAKER_01]: That's the last time they did a Star Wars thing
[00:50:07] [SPEAKER_01]: that I wasn't controlling.
[00:50:09] [SPEAKER_01]: Harrison Ford?
[00:50:10] [SPEAKER_01]: Wait, he's in these movies?
[00:50:11] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, from K-19, The Widowmaker.
[00:50:13] [SPEAKER_00]: I can't talk about this.
[00:50:14] [SPEAKER_00]: George, we will see you Monday, November 23rd,
[00:50:17] [SPEAKER_00]: 7.30 at Union Hall.
[00:50:19] [SPEAKER_00]: I'm excited.
[00:50:20] [SPEAKER_00]: Me too.
[00:50:21] [SPEAKER_03]: We're going to talk for a few more minutes.
[00:50:22] [SPEAKER_03]: We're going to talk for a few more minutes.
[00:50:24] [SPEAKER_03]: Hey, I hope you don't mind, George.
[00:50:24] [SPEAKER_03]: Thank you so much for coming over.
[00:50:25] [SPEAKER_00]: Thank you so much for being here.
[00:50:28] [SPEAKER_00]: Strange Magic.
[00:50:28] [SPEAKER_00]: Strange Magic.
[00:50:29] [SPEAKER_00]: You bring some strange magic to our world.
[00:50:31] [SPEAKER_01]: DVD and iTunes, high definition download.
[00:50:34] [SPEAKER_01]: You can buy Strange Magic.
[00:50:35] [SPEAKER_01]: It's a great film if you're looking for something
[00:50:38] [SPEAKER_01]: for Thanksgiving holidays.
[00:50:40] [SPEAKER_01]: Thank you, George.
[00:50:42] [SPEAKER_00]: Sorry, if I was unprofessional,
[00:50:43] [SPEAKER_00]: I'll take a chill pill.
[00:50:44] [SPEAKER_00]: It's just a lot of emotions to process.
[00:50:46] [SPEAKER_00]: One afternoon.
[00:50:46] [SPEAKER_00]: Griffin.
[00:50:47] [SPEAKER_00]: Okay, first of all, I'm sorry, Ben.
[00:50:49] [SPEAKER_00]: I'm sorry.
[00:50:49] [SPEAKER_00]: I know I didn't handle that as well as I could.
[00:50:51] [SPEAKER_02]: That was really tough.
[00:50:53] [SPEAKER_00]: Look, you were cornering the supervillain.
[00:50:55] [SPEAKER_00]: We felt like I couldn't let him go easy.
[00:50:57] [SPEAKER_00]: It was like we had Blofeld in the room.
[00:50:58] [SPEAKER_00]: I could not let him off easy, but let's...
[00:51:01] [SPEAKER_02]: Actually, I want to apologize too.
[00:51:03] [SPEAKER_02]: As a producer, I should have known this.
[00:51:05] [SPEAKER_02]: You should have known this.
[00:51:06] [SPEAKER_02]: We all made a mistake.
[00:51:08] [SPEAKER_03]: This makes a million things make more sense.
[00:51:12] [SPEAKER_03]: It does actually.
[00:51:13] [SPEAKER_03]: A lot is clear now.
[00:51:16] [SPEAKER_03]: And I am so glad that we can talk about it.
[00:51:18] [SPEAKER_00]: Now, here's the thing, okay?
[00:51:21] [SPEAKER_00]: We have made it clear that this is not a Star Wars podcast.
[00:51:24] [SPEAKER_00]: It's not.
[00:51:24] [SPEAKER_00]: We're building a larger franchise here, okay?
[00:51:27] [SPEAKER_00]: Now we want to go on to other projects.
[00:51:28] [SPEAKER_00]: We were just going to take...
[00:51:29] [SPEAKER_00]: I'm getting...
[00:51:30] [SPEAKER_00]: Turn your fucking phone off.
[00:51:31] [SPEAKER_00]: I'm sorry.
[00:51:32] [SPEAKER_00]: I just love these Star Wars cards as much as I hate these movies.
[00:51:36] [SPEAKER_00]: We are really, really down on this franchise, right?
[00:51:39] [SPEAKER_00]: I mean, obviously there's something drawing us in them.
[00:51:41] [SPEAKER_00]: George does have a point, but we don't like these movies
[00:51:44] [SPEAKER_00]: in any conventional, normal way.
[00:51:46] [SPEAKER_00]: It's not a whole thing really.
[00:51:47] [SPEAKER_00]: I can't imagine four, five and six being good.
[00:51:49] [SPEAKER_00]: Okay, plus a Christmas special, plus a JJ Abrams movie coming out next month.
[00:51:53] [SPEAKER_00]: We just thought that there are five more of these.
[00:51:55] [SPEAKER_00]: So we were ready to move on, right?
[00:51:56] [SPEAKER_03]: We have all these plans.
[00:51:58] [SPEAKER_00]: We have big mini-series.
[00:52:00] [SPEAKER_00]: We do.
[00:52:00] [SPEAKER_00]: We do.
[00:52:01] [SPEAKER_00]: And let's say...
[00:52:01] [SPEAKER_00]: We've talked it over with the big wigs, with the higher ups.
[00:52:04] [SPEAKER_00]: With the UCB, we've gotten a thumbs up.
[00:52:05] [SPEAKER_00]: We got a big plan coming for January, February.
[00:52:08] [SPEAKER_00]: We'll let you all know about that soon.
[00:52:09] [SPEAKER_00]: If you have suggestions of other things you'd like to hear us cover,
[00:52:12] [SPEAKER_00]: Griffin Dave present at gmail.com or tweet at us.
[00:52:14] [SPEAKER_00]: We're looking for new mini-series ideas,
[00:52:17] [SPEAKER_00]: passion projects by Lunatics,
[00:52:20] [SPEAKER_00]: and trying to do investigative reports to figure out what was happening.
[00:52:25] [SPEAKER_00]: I don't know if I can go through this again, watching five more of these things.
[00:52:28] [SPEAKER_00]: It's so brutal.
[00:52:29] [SPEAKER_00]: And to do ten weeks for each of these things,
[00:52:32] [SPEAKER_00]: when it's like...
[00:52:33] [SPEAKER_00]: I mean, first of all, he's saying the very idea is giving me a swirling headache.
[00:52:37] [SPEAKER_00]: And four, five and six are rough drafts.
[00:52:39] [SPEAKER_00]: It took him 20 years to finish.
[00:52:40] [SPEAKER_00]: There's no way those movies could be good.
[00:52:41] [SPEAKER_00]: He's out of his mind.
[00:52:42] [SPEAKER_00]: He's out of his mind.
[00:52:43] [SPEAKER_00]: Okay?
[00:52:44] [SPEAKER_00]: Fast and Furious is the only franchise where the fourth and fifth films get
[00:52:47] [SPEAKER_00]: exponentially better than the first three.
[00:52:49] [SPEAKER_00]: I disagree. The fourth film isn't as good as the first or the third.
[00:52:52] [SPEAKER_00]: I would go five, seven, one, four, three, two...
[00:53:00] [SPEAKER_00]: Wow, six is low.
[00:53:01] [SPEAKER_00]: Oh, I forgot six.
[00:53:03] [SPEAKER_03]: I would go five, seven, one, six, three, four, two.
[00:53:09] [SPEAKER_03]: What if we just do one week for each of these movies?
[00:53:11] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, and we'll look.
[00:53:12] [SPEAKER_03]: We just peel them off.
[00:53:13] [SPEAKER_03]: That is a relief.
[00:53:14] [SPEAKER_03]: Okay, let's just do one week for each of these movies.
[00:53:16] [SPEAKER_03]: Let me propose something.
[00:53:17] [SPEAKER_00]: They're gonna suck.
[00:53:18] [SPEAKER_00]: There's no way this franchise gets good at film number four.
[00:53:21] [SPEAKER_03]: Here's a little timeline for you.
[00:53:23] [SPEAKER_03]: Next week, we've got our live episode.
[00:53:26] [SPEAKER_03]: It's gonna drop hard.
[00:53:28] [SPEAKER_03]: It's gonna be great.
[00:53:30] [SPEAKER_03]: Then I'm just taking a look at my calendar.
[00:53:32] [SPEAKER_03]: I don't know what you're doing,
[00:53:33] [SPEAKER_03]: but I'm just taking a little look at my calendar.
[00:53:35] [SPEAKER_03]: We could do episode four and then episode five,
[00:53:40] [SPEAKER_03]: then episode six, then episode seven.
[00:53:43] [SPEAKER_00]: When does that come out?
[00:53:44] [SPEAKER_03]: Well, I mean, if everything goes according to plan.
[00:53:48] [SPEAKER_00]: I'm saying when does that movie come out?
[00:53:50] [SPEAKER_03]: Apparently it comes out December 18th.
[00:53:51] [SPEAKER_03]: Wow, that's perfect timing.
[00:53:53] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I know.
[00:53:53] [SPEAKER_00]: And then we can...
[00:53:54] [SPEAKER_00]: It's weird that worked out so well.
[00:53:55] [SPEAKER_00]: Wrap it up with a Christmas special.
[00:53:58] [SPEAKER_00]: And that would be right around Christmas.
[00:53:59] [SPEAKER_00]: You're saying that...
[00:53:59] [SPEAKER_00]: It would be right at the end of December.
[00:54:00] [SPEAKER_00]: That would be released right almost on Christmas Eve.
[00:54:02] [SPEAKER_00]: I hate bits, but this sounds great.
[00:54:04] [SPEAKER_00]: That sounds like, I mean, really careful planning
[00:54:07] [SPEAKER_00]: on someone's part.
[00:54:08] [SPEAKER_00]: I'll say God.
[00:54:10] [SPEAKER_00]: I'm gonna let you...
[00:54:11] [SPEAKER_00]: Because that seems very smart and well-structured.
[00:54:13] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, which is actually...
[00:54:14] [SPEAKER_03]: I'd like to take credit for it, but...
[00:54:16] [SPEAKER_03]: No, you gotta give it up to the big guy.
[00:54:17] [SPEAKER_03]: Big G upstairs, I'm not talking about George E. Poor G.
[00:54:19] [SPEAKER_03]: I wanna make clear to people,
[00:54:20] [SPEAKER_03]: we did not plan these things well.
[00:54:22] [SPEAKER_03]: They just sort of worked out for us.
[00:54:24] [SPEAKER_00]: Clearly we didn't plan them well,
[00:54:25] [SPEAKER_00]: because we didn't know that these movies
[00:54:26] [SPEAKER_00]: fucking existed.
[00:54:27] [SPEAKER_00]: But like, it's not even a bit.
[00:54:28] [SPEAKER_00]: No, it's not even a bit.
[00:54:29] [SPEAKER_00]: We're not doing bits.
[00:54:29] [SPEAKER_00]: We hate bits here.
[00:54:30] [SPEAKER_00]: But that's the plan.
[00:54:32] [SPEAKER_00]: That's the plan.
[00:54:33] [SPEAKER_00]: Okay, next week live show.
[00:54:37] [SPEAKER_00]: And then Star Wars...
[00:54:38] [SPEAKER_00]: We're gonna go four, five, six, seven.
[00:54:40] [SPEAKER_00]: Episode four!
[00:54:41] [SPEAKER_00]: A new hope.
[00:54:42] [SPEAKER_00]: Wow.
[00:54:42] [SPEAKER_00]: What a dumb title.
[00:54:43] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, you know, I mean, I can't fall for that again.
[00:54:46] [SPEAKER_00]: A new hope.
[00:54:47] [SPEAKER_00]: It's like, oh, this time it's gonna be different.
[00:54:48] [SPEAKER_00]: No, it's not.
[00:54:49] [SPEAKER_00]: It's gonna be the same thing.
[00:54:49] [SPEAKER_00]: Empire Strikes Back is kind of interesting.
[00:54:51] [SPEAKER_00]: You don't even know who they are.
[00:54:51] [SPEAKER_02]: And why did he shoot it in the 70s and 80s?
[00:54:54] [SPEAKER_02]: And then...
[00:54:55] [SPEAKER_02]: It doesn't make sense.
[00:54:56] [SPEAKER_00]: He shot three films in the 70s and 80s.
[00:54:58] [SPEAKER_00]: He says he didn't release them.
[00:55:00] [SPEAKER_00]: Then released them.
[00:55:01] [SPEAKER_00]: No, no, he was like a soft release.
[00:55:02] [SPEAKER_00]: He was test screening.
[00:55:03] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, what is...
[00:55:04] [SPEAKER_00]: What is that?
[00:55:04] [SPEAKER_00]: Then altered version, his final cuts came out
[00:55:06] [SPEAKER_00]: in the 90s, and then he released one, two, and three.
[00:55:09] [SPEAKER_00]: Who would make movies like that?
[00:55:10] [SPEAKER_02]: He did say prequels, though, early on in the interview.
[00:55:13] [SPEAKER_02]: I just...
[00:55:14] [SPEAKER_02]: I didn't call them out.
[00:55:17] [SPEAKER_00]: Okay, I don't know what that means.
[00:55:18] [SPEAKER_00]: For the sake of clarity from here on out,
[00:55:20] [SPEAKER_00]: the Phantom Mask trilogy will be referred to
[00:55:21] [SPEAKER_00]: as the original trilogy or the OT.
[00:55:24] [SPEAKER_00]: And four, five, and six are gonna have to be
[00:55:25] [SPEAKER_00]: the sequel trilogy.
[00:55:26] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, they'll be the sequel trilogy.
[00:55:27] [SPEAKER_00]: They'll be the sequel trilogy.
[00:55:28] [SPEAKER_00]: And I don't even know what to call this
[00:55:29] [SPEAKER_00]: JJ Abrams thing.
[00:55:30] [SPEAKER_03]: Well, it's probably just continuing.
[00:55:31] [SPEAKER_03]: Maybe it's starting a new trilogy.
[00:55:32] [SPEAKER_03]: So it's the sequel sequel trilogy.
[00:55:34] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, okay.
[00:55:34] [SPEAKER_03]: Trilogy.
[00:55:36] [SPEAKER_00]: Wow.
[00:55:37] [SPEAKER_00]: I mean, this is a huge day for us.
[00:55:38] [SPEAKER_00]: Oh boy.
[00:55:39] [SPEAKER_00]: Guys, I'm wiped.
[00:55:40] [SPEAKER_00]: Merchandise spotlight.
[00:55:41] [SPEAKER_00]: They made a barren Papanoia to action figure.
[00:55:44] [SPEAKER_00]: It was part of...
[00:55:45] [SPEAKER_00]: Yes, they did.
[00:55:45] [SPEAKER_00]: It was part of a Lucas family gift set.
[00:55:47] [SPEAKER_00]: And it was all his children and him,
[00:55:49] [SPEAKER_00]: the characters they played.
[00:55:50] [SPEAKER_00]: So it was Jed Zekasa and his daughter who is next to him
[00:55:54] [SPEAKER_00]: and Georgie Porgy.
[00:55:55] [SPEAKER_00]: And I think his other daughter played something
[00:55:57] [SPEAKER_00]: in some other scene.
[00:55:58] [SPEAKER_03]: What's our running time, Ben?
[00:55:59] [SPEAKER_03]: Where are we at?
[00:56:01] [SPEAKER_00]: 55.
[00:56:02] [SPEAKER_03]: Okay.
[00:56:02] [SPEAKER_00]: So the shortest episode yet.
[00:56:03] [SPEAKER_00]: I mean, we just have a lot to process.
[00:56:04] [SPEAKER_03]: This is as short as our fan fiction episode,
[00:56:06] [SPEAKER_03]: which I think was...
[00:56:07] [SPEAKER_03]: I mean, sorry, it's our politics episode,
[00:56:08] [SPEAKER_03]: which is a similarly frustrated point.
[00:56:13] [SPEAKER_00]: I think we all need to take a chill fell
[00:56:14] [SPEAKER_00]: and think about what happened here today
[00:56:16] [SPEAKER_00]: and brace ourselves for the future,
[00:56:17] [SPEAKER_00]: because we have a rough road ahead of us.
[00:56:20] [SPEAKER_00]: But it's going to be one week each.
[00:56:21] [SPEAKER_00]: We're going to breeze through these movies.
[00:56:22] [SPEAKER_00]: That's the plan for our film.
[00:56:23] [SPEAKER_00]: They're not...
[00:56:24] [SPEAKER_03]: So don't despair,
[00:56:25] [SPEAKER_03]: because there's more around the corner.
[00:56:26] [SPEAKER_03]: We're not going to listen to us talk about shitty movies.
[00:56:29] [SPEAKER_03]: We'll sweep through these, you know,
[00:56:30] [SPEAKER_03]: later Star Wars movies.
[00:56:31] [SPEAKER_03]: We'll do them fast
[00:56:32] [SPEAKER_03]: and then we're going to get to the good stuff.
[00:56:34] [SPEAKER_00]: They're going to suck.
[00:56:34] [SPEAKER_00]: We're going to be concise about how they suck
[00:56:36] [SPEAKER_00]: and we're going to move on.
[00:56:37] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh, they're going to suck.
[00:56:38] [SPEAKER_00]: They're going to suck.
[00:56:39] [SPEAKER_00]: It's impossible that they don't suck.
[00:56:41] [SPEAKER_00]: George was involved?
[00:56:42] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[00:56:42] [SPEAKER_00]: It's impossible that they don't suck.
[00:56:44] [SPEAKER_00]: What about American graffiti though?
[00:56:46] [SPEAKER_00]: That's an anomaly.
[00:56:47] [SPEAKER_00]: At this point, that's an anomaly.
[00:56:49] [SPEAKER_00]: It is, Jones.
[00:56:50] [SPEAKER_03]: Can I say something else?
[00:56:50] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, but you had Spielberg.
[00:56:51] [SPEAKER_00]: You had the director to count away.
[00:56:52] [SPEAKER_00]: Can I say something else?
[00:56:53] [SPEAKER_00]: True.
[00:56:53] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[00:56:54] [SPEAKER_03]: I watched Rocky last night
[00:56:56] [SPEAKER_03]: because I'm getting ready to watch Creed,
[00:56:58] [SPEAKER_03]: which I'm seeing tomorrow.
[00:57:00] [SPEAKER_03]: Seventh movie in a franchise.
[00:57:01] [SPEAKER_00]: I started in the 70s.
[00:57:02] [SPEAKER_00]: That's true.
[00:57:03] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[00:57:03] [SPEAKER_03]: That's a good point.
[00:57:04] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[00:57:04] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[00:57:05] [SPEAKER_03]: And I burst into tears at the end of Rocky.
[00:57:08] [SPEAKER_03]: I've seen it before, but not in years,
[00:57:10] [SPEAKER_03]: but it's a great movie.
[00:57:11] [SPEAKER_03]: I had to rewatch it.
[00:57:13] [SPEAKER_03]: Burst into tears.
[00:57:13] [SPEAKER_00]: A lot of our friends who are phone critics
[00:57:14] [SPEAKER_00]: have seen Creed and say it's a masterpiece.
[00:57:17] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[00:57:17] [SPEAKER_00]: Some are already being contrary though, but yeah.
[00:57:20] [SPEAKER_00]: Well, those people sound dumb.
[00:57:21] [SPEAKER_00]: We love loving movies on this podcast.
[00:57:23] [SPEAKER_00]: We do.
[00:57:23] [SPEAKER_00]: Unfortunately, we're going to have to cover
[00:57:24] [SPEAKER_00]: four more that we hate,
[00:57:25] [SPEAKER_00]: five more that we hate,
[00:57:26] [SPEAKER_00]: but then we're going to be done.
[00:57:27] [SPEAKER_00]: Done, done, done.
[00:57:28] [SPEAKER_00]: Fucking 2015, wrap a bow on Star Wars
[00:57:30] [SPEAKER_00]: and move on to greener pastures.
[00:57:33] [SPEAKER_00]: Ben, final thoughts?
[00:57:35] [SPEAKER_00]: I mean, what do you even say at a time like this?
[00:57:36] [SPEAKER_02]: I don't know.
[00:57:37] [SPEAKER_02]: I really, I mean,
[00:57:40] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm kind of worried
[00:57:42] [SPEAKER_02]: of the live show and dealing with George.
[00:57:45] [SPEAKER_02]: It's going to be tough.
[00:57:46] [SPEAKER_02]: Griffin, you have to be on the best behavior.
[00:57:48] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm getting my best behavior.
[00:57:49] [SPEAKER_02]: That was too much.
[00:57:50] [SPEAKER_02]: Yes, I know it was.
[00:57:51] [SPEAKER_00]: I know, I know.
[00:57:53] [SPEAKER_00]: I whiffed on that one.
[00:57:55] [SPEAKER_00]: That's me.
[00:57:56] [SPEAKER_00]: I got egg on my face.
[00:57:57] [SPEAKER_00]: And I hate eggs.
[00:57:58] [SPEAKER_00]: Nothing first time.
[00:57:59] [SPEAKER_00]: I hate more.
[00:58:00] [SPEAKER_00]: I like eggs.
[00:58:01] [SPEAKER_00]: I do it once a season and we held off this long
[00:58:03] [SPEAKER_00]: and now I've done it.
[00:58:04] [SPEAKER_00]: I've messed up.
[00:58:06] [SPEAKER_00]: Okay, I will say.
[00:58:07] [SPEAKER_00]: This is my, this is my politics.
[00:58:09] [SPEAKER_02]: I was just looking at my notes here.
[00:58:10] [SPEAKER_02]: I did want to ask about the Palpatine's face change,
[00:58:13] [SPEAKER_02]: but yeah, we'll get to it.
[00:58:14] [SPEAKER_02]: We'll do it at the live show.
[00:58:15] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, well, it'll come up on the live show.
[00:58:17] [SPEAKER_00]: Look, if you're listening to this podcast
[00:58:18] [SPEAKER_00]: at the moment it drops,
[00:58:20] [SPEAKER_00]: then go online, get tickets
[00:58:22] [SPEAKER_00]: and go see the show that night.
[00:58:23] [SPEAKER_00]: And if you're listening to it any day at,
[00:58:25] [SPEAKER_00]: later than the day it was released,
[00:58:27] [SPEAKER_00]: smell you later cheesecake.
[00:58:29] [SPEAKER_00]: Sorry, buddy.
[00:58:29] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, you'll have to listen to it.
[00:58:32] [SPEAKER_00]: The best show.
[00:58:32] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, with astonishing special guests.
[00:58:35] [SPEAKER_00]: I mean, now we know George above board is involved.
[00:58:38] [SPEAKER_02]: David, I know a lot about what's happening.
[00:58:40] [SPEAKER_02]: Really?
[00:58:40] [SPEAKER_00]: It's legitimately a really good lineup, right?
[00:58:42] [SPEAKER_00]: It's getting really good.
[00:58:43] [SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
[00:58:43] [SPEAKER_00]: It's really good.
[00:58:44] [SPEAKER_00]: Why don't you tell me?
[00:58:45] [SPEAKER_00]: Because you will tell me not to do what I have planned.
[00:58:48] [SPEAKER_00]: No!
[00:58:49] [SPEAKER_00]: What are you going to do?
[00:58:50] [SPEAKER_02]: I fully support all of it.
[00:58:53] [SPEAKER_02]: So don't be concerned, David.
[00:58:56] [SPEAKER_02]: It's going to be great.
[00:58:57] [SPEAKER_00]: Thank you, producer Ben.
[00:59:01] [SPEAKER_00]: Although, you know, really should have done your research a little bit.
[00:59:03] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, alright.
[00:59:04] [SPEAKER_00]: You're right.
[00:59:05] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's like you always only choose to Google.
[00:59:07] [SPEAKER_00]: He's a busy man.
[00:59:08] [SPEAKER_03]: He produces a lot of great UCB podcast network shows.
[00:59:11] [SPEAKER_03]: He does and you should listen to all of them.
[00:59:12] [SPEAKER_03]: You should rate, subscribe, review.
[00:59:15] [SPEAKER_03]: Digital, UCB digital.
[00:59:16] [SPEAKER_03]: There's so many good ones.
[00:59:17] [SPEAKER_03]: So you could get going through a breakup.
[00:59:19] [SPEAKER_03]: Yep.
[00:59:20] [SPEAKER_03]: He's laughing right now.
[00:59:21] [SPEAKER_02]: I love this.
[00:59:22] [SPEAKER_02]: This is really fun.
[00:59:23] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh, there was a review.
[00:59:24] [SPEAKER_03]: We're reading one new review.
[00:59:25] [SPEAKER_03]: I want to read, I'll come on.
[00:59:26] [SPEAKER_03]: It's from Racism Street.
[00:59:28] [SPEAKER_03]: Five stars.
[00:59:29] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, let's read this one.
[00:59:29] [SPEAKER_03]: Have you read it?
[00:59:30] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[00:59:31] [SPEAKER_03]: Five stars for reawakening the long dormant memory of my high school history presentation
[00:59:35] [SPEAKER_03]: ironically titled The Evolution of Man.
[00:59:38] [SPEAKER_03]: The goal to capture the essence of slavery in America and the results in America.
[00:59:43] [SPEAKER_03]: The result of poster featuring nothing but the famous march of progress drawn in reverse.
[00:59:48] [SPEAKER_03]: Yes, a black man is the starting point slowly but surely devolving into a chimp.
[00:59:52] [SPEAKER_03]: An apt and biting condemnation of colonial era white patriarchy I insisted.
[00:59:57] [SPEAKER_03]: Dude, you can't draw that they said.
[01:00:00] [SPEAKER_03]: Griffin, you're not alone.
[01:00:01] [SPEAKER_03]: Ben, cut this whole thing.
[01:00:02] [SPEAKER_00]: Well, not to give myself a messiah complex but it's been suggested that perhaps I die
[01:00:10] [SPEAKER_00]: for the sins of my listeners that I'm willing to take the bullet symbolically for the
[01:00:14] [SPEAKER_00]: listenership at large.
[01:00:18] [SPEAKER_00]: So you're welcome.
[01:00:19] [SPEAKER_03]: Thank you Racism Street.
[01:00:21] [SPEAKER_03]: I say to that review.
[01:00:21] [SPEAKER_03]: And if you don't know what we're referring to, you should listen back to the podcast.
[01:00:25] [SPEAKER_00]: You actually don't have to listen to that episode.
[01:00:28] [SPEAKER_00]: Otherwise I apologize for that really horrible image.
[01:00:30] [SPEAKER_00]: You don't have to listen to that.
[01:00:32] [SPEAKER_00]: Ladies and gentlemen, thank you for listening.
[01:00:35] [SPEAKER_00]: Come to your live show, rate, subscribe, review, virtually kiss, I'm going to take a nap
[01:00:41] [SPEAKER_00]: and have a beer or something.
[01:00:43] [SPEAKER_00]: And as always.
[01:00:45] [SPEAKER_00]: Episodes four, five, six, seven Christmas special.
[01:00:49] [SPEAKER_00]: I got a bad feeling about this.
