Aliens of the Deep/Ghosts of the Abyss

Griffin and David this week discussed two documentaries directed by James Cameron: 2003’s Ghost of the Abyss and 2006’s Aliens of the Deep. But what were the early days of IMAX like? What kind of very rich person loves risking their lives in a submarine? Does David or Producer Ben rep Jupiter's moon, Europa, harder? Together, they examine Bill Paxton’s Texas accent, water drones James & Elwood and play a double dose of the box office game.

[00:00:01] Blank Check with Griffin and David, Blank Check with Griffin and David

[00:00:09] Don't know what to say or to expect

[00:00:13] All you need to know is that the name of the show is Blank Check

[00:00:20] It's Ghost of the Podcasts slash Podcasts of the Deep

[00:00:25] It's the Documentaries episode

[00:00:28] Yeah, great. Let's get through it

[00:00:30] Delete

[00:00:32] Hello everybody, my name is Griffin Newman

[00:00:34] I'm David Sims

[00:00:35] Welcome to Blank Check

[00:00:37] Ben, I swear to God

[00:00:39] This is a very underwater episode of Blank Check with Griffin and David

[00:00:43] Yeah, this episode's gonna start underwater and just decline further deep into the water

[00:00:48] We're gonna make a big splash and then drown

[00:00:50] This episode's gonna drive its boat out into the ocean

[00:00:53] And then something about the boat's gonna break

[00:00:55] It's just gonna kind of sit there for a while

[00:00:57] Yeah, we're gonna send two little robots out and then one of them, the tether is gonna get caught in that thing

[00:01:03] It's gonna get stuck on the sea

[00:01:04] It's gonna be 20 minutes grabbing it, pulling it out

[00:01:06] Well, we finally got to that point in the mini-series where we talk about a thing that no one's seen

[00:01:11] Woo! Hey, we're entitled to this one

[00:01:14] It's been movies that everyone's seen so far pretty much

[00:01:17] Some of the biggest movies of all time

[00:01:18] Not this time

[00:01:19] Nope

[00:01:21] With this podcast, we talk about directors, filmographies

[00:01:25] Filmmakers who have had big success early on in the guys series of blank checks

[00:01:29] And sometimes those checks clear and sometimes they bounce

[00:01:32] Maybe blank checks, of course, meaning the freedom to make whatever projects they want

[00:01:36] Boy, these are blank check projects

[00:01:38] I mean, the fact that he got Disney to flip the bill to do these two things

[00:01:41] How much do you think they must have cost a fair amount?

[00:01:44] Yeah, I think...

[00:01:45] I think Ghost of the Abyss was profitable

[00:01:47] Quite profitable

[00:01:48] Yes, Aileen's of the Deep was not

[00:01:50] Probably not

[00:01:52] But they got some science out of it

[00:01:54] I mean, these movies are the equivalent of taking a vacation but writing it off as research

[00:01:59] In your taxes

[00:02:01] Yeah

[00:02:02] Right?

[00:02:03] I guess so

[00:02:04] Yeah, they probably... yeah, exactly

[00:02:05] They probably buried all this at the end

[00:02:06] Like, it's all charitable contributions to marine biologists or whatever

[00:02:11] Two IMAX documentaries

[00:02:14] Directed or co-directed by James Cameron

[00:02:17] 2003's Ghost of the Abyss

[00:02:20] Yes

[00:02:21] Despite having the word abyss in the title, not about underwater aliens

[00:02:24] No, but one assumes it's trying to be cute

[00:02:27] A little bit

[00:02:28] Yeah

[00:02:29] A little cute

[00:02:30] And then 2006, he gave us Aliens of the Deep

[00:02:34] Which is about abyss type aliens

[00:02:37] I guess... it's about James Cameron

[00:02:41] Both of them are about James Cameron

[00:02:42] The second one's really about James Cameron

[00:02:44] The first one's kind of about Bill Paxton

[00:02:46] Yeah, Bill Paxton with... let's say this

[00:02:48] Because you know, you and I love billing

[00:02:50] Love talking billing

[00:02:52] Oh yeah, this is a podnator judgment cast

[00:02:54] It's a mini-series about the films of James Cameron

[00:02:56] Yeah

[00:02:58] I don't know the last time I saw this

[00:03:01] Ghost of the Abyss has a...

[00:03:03] Not just Bill Paxton's first bill but only billed

[00:03:06] Is he the only billed at? I mean...

[00:03:08] The credits go...

[00:03:09] They don't even bill Louis Abernethy or whoever?

[00:03:11] Nope, here's how the credits...

[00:03:12] Rude

[00:03:13] Here's how the credits go for Ghost of the Abyss, okay?

[00:03:15] Produced and directed by James Cameron as the first credit card

[00:03:18] Boom

[00:03:19] And then...

[00:03:20] Solo card

[00:03:21] Bill Paxton

[00:03:23] And then it says...

[00:03:24] Second unit director

[00:03:26] Then it goes on to like technical credits again

[00:03:31] But there are two IMAX documentaries

[00:03:36] Combined runtime of two hours

[00:03:39] Yeah, Ghost is a solid 61 minutes

[00:03:43] Yeah

[00:03:44] Right, I think?

[00:03:45] I think a little bit over

[00:03:46] Aliens of the Deep is 47

[00:03:48] What?

[00:03:49] Oh, oh, sorry, I got him flipped, yes

[00:03:50] No, no, no

[00:03:51] No, Ghost of the Abyss is longer

[00:03:52] No, Ghost of the Abyss, 61 minutes

[00:03:54] Aliens of the Deep, 95 minutes

[00:03:56] The version of Aliens of the Deep I watched was 47 minutes long

[00:03:59] I don't know what to tell you, buddy

[00:04:01] I don't know what you rented

[00:04:02] Is it possible that Amazon did me dirty?

[00:04:04] Did you rent the wrong movie?

[00:04:06] Aliens of the Deep?

[00:04:07] What happened in it?

[00:04:08] They went underwater and saw some things that looked like aliens

[00:04:10] And what did the ships look like if they were in?

[00:04:14] This is a little pod, it's a little submarine, so what do you mean?

[00:04:16] There was something pretty special about those ships

[00:04:18] Aliens of the Deep, the big like globes

[00:04:21] Yeah, they were cool, what do you mean?

[00:04:23] Is there a specific answer I should look for?

[00:04:25] No, I just... I'm worried you saw the wrong movie

[00:04:27] Where did you watch it?

[00:04:28] I also watched it on Amazon

[00:04:30] iTunes

[00:04:31] 47 minutes, right Ben?

[00:04:32] Yes, 47 minutes

[00:04:33] Right producer, Ben?

[00:04:34] Well, yes

[00:04:35] Ben Deucer?

[00:04:36] Yeah, no

[00:04:37] Perdure, Ben

[00:04:38] You're saying 95 minutes

[00:04:40] Mr. Hositive?

[00:04:41] Alright

[00:04:42] Yeah

[00:04:43] The fuckmaster?

[00:04:44] Yeah

[00:04:45] The tiebreaker?

[00:04:46] Birthday Benny?

[00:04:47] Always

[00:04:48] Dirtbag Benny?

[00:04:49] Yeah

[00:04:50] Hello, Fennel?

[00:04:51] Yep

[00:04:52] You graduated with a certain title over the course of different easers?

[00:04:55] Producer Ben Kenobi, Kylo Ben

[00:04:58] Ben Seyit, Ben Ishamlin

[00:04:59] I feel like I'm missing out

[00:05:01] With David's face right now

[00:05:03] He's just writing a piece

[00:05:05] He's filing a piece

[00:05:06] I am not filing a piece

[00:05:08] Trying to figure out what version of Alien did the deep you saw

[00:05:11] But how did we see the wrong fucking version?

[00:05:13] My guess is that it was 95 minutes in theaters

[00:05:16] Which is why this is saying that

[00:05:18] And that like the version you rent is cut down

[00:05:21] Because a lot of the 3D stuff was cut out or something

[00:05:23] I would maybe guess the opposite

[00:05:25] Because for a long time

[00:05:26] The opposite?

[00:05:27] Yes, can I tell you why?

[00:05:29] For a long time IMAX movies had a real cap

[00:05:32] To how long they could be

[00:05:33] Because IMAX projectors were so big

[00:05:36] And the film was so big

[00:05:38] Like famously when they re-released

[00:05:40] Notting

[00:05:41] Apollo 13 and IMAX they had to cut like fucking 25 minutes out of it

[00:05:44] Same thing with Attack of the Clones

[00:05:46] You know?

[00:05:47] That's why like this is

[00:05:49] I mean these two movies are dinosaurs

[00:05:51] They're relics of a bygone era

[00:05:52] They are

[00:05:53] Where IMAX theaters

[00:05:54] Where you would like go to the museum

[00:05:55] Right

[00:05:56] Most IMAX screens in the country were museums

[00:05:58] Or planetariums

[00:05:59] You know, aquariums

[00:06:01] Your aerials

[00:06:02] I remember the first ones

[00:06:04] Alright

[00:06:05] The first one I saw

[00:06:07] It was called like

[00:06:08] I don't know there was like asteroids

[00:06:09] Like shooting at the screen

[00:06:10] When I was a kid

[00:06:11] I went to see it at the museum in natural history

[00:06:13] And you wore like the old paper glasses

[00:06:16] They were very big

[00:06:17] Um

[00:06:18] I think that perhaps Ben and I saw

[00:06:21] An IMAX cut

[00:06:22] And then when it was released on home video

[00:06:24] It was expanded

[00:06:25] Because I think the same thing happened with Ghost of the Abyss

[00:06:27] I think there's a longer version of Ghost of the Abyss as well

[00:06:29] But the IMAX versions are short

[00:06:32] I think the version I can't remember now

[00:06:34] But I feel like the version of Ghost of the Abyss I saw was

[00:06:36] You know what?

[00:06:37] Hey, I just realized

[00:06:38] We're hosting a podcast

[00:06:39] Jesus, nobody cares

[00:06:40] Alright, we're moving on

[00:06:41] Oh wait, I just realized something too

[00:06:43] Who cares?

[00:06:44] Yeah, who fucking cares

[00:06:45] Who fucking cares

[00:06:46] Nobody cares

[00:06:47] People don't care about these movies at all

[00:06:49] Like, you know, like

[00:06:51] Baseline, they don't care about the movies

[00:06:52] They certainly don't want care to hear

[00:06:54] What the running time of them is

[00:06:56] But you know what they do care about

[00:06:57] What?

[00:06:58] Hashtag the two friends, baby

[00:06:59] That's us

[00:07:00] I mean, if they're listening, that's why

[00:07:02] Griffin and Davey

[00:07:03] They weren't like

[00:07:04] Finally, Aliens of the Deep

[00:07:06] Someone's gonna talk about it

[00:07:08] But what was the run time?

[00:07:10] By my count, 47 and 114

[00:07:12] Um, so

[00:07:14] 47, yeah

[00:07:16] So these two movies were

[00:07:18] Like museum IMAX documentaries

[00:07:20] They were

[00:07:22] Sort of at the vanguard of new live-action 3D technology

[00:07:25] Yeah

[00:07:26] They were using experimental cameras

[00:07:27] It was the beginning of James Cameron's mission

[00:07:29] To bring 3D back

[00:07:31] To make 3D happen again

[00:07:33] Make 3D great again

[00:07:34] And those were the two things

[00:07:35] A, there were two cool underwater missions

[00:07:37] He wanted to go on

[00:07:38] And B, he wanted to set

[00:07:40] The runway for him to be able to make a big

[00:07:42] New live-action 3D movie

[00:07:45] And he got Disney to foot the bill

[00:07:47] On both

[00:07:48] And it was worth it

[00:07:50] Because, you know, eventually

[00:07:52] Yeah, Ghost The Abyss cost 13 million dollars

[00:07:54] Okay

[00:07:55] And Aliens of the Deep

[00:07:57] Cost 9 million dollars

[00:07:59] So, you know

[00:08:00] Big budget documentaries

[00:08:02] Yeah, do you think the difference between the two budgets

[00:08:04] Is that Paxton got four?

[00:08:06] Yeah, Paxton's quote just

[00:08:08] It had to come in at four

[00:08:10] But yeah, these were short IMAX documentaries

[00:08:12] And then that stopped being a thing

[00:08:14] Once James Cameron brought 3D back

[00:08:16] You can't, they don't make those anymore

[00:08:18] They don't

[00:08:19] I mean, I don't think really

[00:08:20] Like if I go to the museum of natural history

[00:08:22] They don't have something

[00:08:23] You can see Doctor Strange

[00:08:24] You know

[00:08:25] It can't be true

[00:08:26] Magnificent

[00:08:27] Remember?

[00:08:28] Everest

[00:08:29] Remember when everyone saw Everest

[00:08:31] Climbing Mount Everest

[00:08:32] Yeah, they were big

[00:08:33] And there was like a Hubble Space Station 3D movie

[00:08:35] Narrated by Tom Cruise

[00:08:36] That made like 100 million dollars

[00:08:37] And it was like 45 minutes long

[00:08:39] And I saw some movie that was in 3D

[00:08:41] That was about like

[00:08:42] A guy who wants to like deliver the mail

[00:08:44] In Alaska on like a biplane

[00:08:46] Interesting

[00:08:47] Which was like setting the old

[00:08:48] Today's of mail

[00:08:50] I remember one that was called

[00:08:51] Like crashes

[00:08:52] Voyage through New York

[00:08:53] And it was like about

[00:08:54] Immigrants coming in through Ellis Island

[00:08:56] It used to be this quasi-educational

[00:08:59] Quasi-spec-tical

[00:09:00] Right, it was sort of that weird

[00:09:01] And that's what these movies are

[00:09:03] But I would say both of them

[00:09:05] Are not good versions of that

[00:09:07] I would say these are both

[00:09:09] Movies that I would not recommend

[00:09:11] Which one do you think is better?

[00:09:12] Ghost of the Abyss

[00:09:13] I disagree so hard

[00:09:14] This is gonna be the biggest fight

[00:09:15] We've ever had in the podcast

[00:09:16] I gotta add some dramatic tension

[00:09:17] To this episode

[00:09:19] I just remembered

[00:09:20] The worst IMAX 3D movie I ever saw

[00:09:22] Was literally it was a series of

[00:09:25] Like conversions of pre-existing animation

[00:09:28] That were now in 3D

[00:09:30] So it was like an anthology movie

[00:09:31] That was like the CGI Treehouse of Horror segment

[00:09:35] The dance scene from Ants

[00:09:37] I vaguely know what you're talking about

[00:09:38] But okay, I remember this existing

[00:09:40] Yeah

[00:09:41] And they like advertise it as

[00:09:42] Like Simpsons 3D

[00:09:43] And I was like oh shit Simpsons 3D

[00:09:45] And then it was like that thing

[00:09:46] You've already seen but now in 3D

[00:09:47] And it was like yeah

[00:09:49] It was like four minutes long

[00:09:50] And we paid like $75 for tickets I'm sure

[00:09:55] These two movies exist in the 12 year gap

[00:09:58] Between Titanic and Avatar

[00:09:59] Where everyone's like what the fuck

[00:10:00] Is James Cameron doing

[00:10:01] When is he gonna make a movie?

[00:10:03] Get back on land

[00:10:04] Pick up a camera

[00:10:05] Make a movie

[00:10:06] And he was like

[00:10:07] I'm going back in the water

[00:10:09] And he just took this massive 3D camera with him

[00:10:11] Massive

[00:10:12] These things are big

[00:10:13] These rigs

[00:10:14] They're huge

[00:10:15] That's like and that's

[00:10:16] I wish

[00:10:17] It's the IMAX rig

[00:10:18] Yeah

[00:10:19] I'll say it's like the size of a whatever

[00:10:21] It's really loud

[00:10:22] Yeah

[00:10:23] Really loud and has to be really close

[00:10:25] I wish

[00:10:27] That the movies covered how difficult

[00:10:29] The cameras were more

[00:10:31] No because these movies are meta enough as it is

[00:10:33] Especially the second one

[00:10:35] But alright

[00:10:36] Let's talk about one

[00:10:37] That's the other

[00:10:38] I know I'm sorry

[00:10:39] The one other major thing we have to acknowledge

[00:10:40] Is that these movies are 3D spectacles

[00:10:41] And we saw them all in 2D

[00:10:42] We did

[00:10:43] And certainly that's maybe why

[00:10:45] Yeah right

[00:10:46] I'm sure in 3D they'd be better

[00:10:47] It's cool

[00:10:48] They'd have

[00:10:49] And a lore

[00:10:50] I think it goes to the abyss

[00:10:51] Especially wood

[00:10:52] Alien to the deepest bunch of shit

[00:10:54] Okay so let's go through

[00:10:55] Ghost of the abyss

[00:10:56] Ghost of the abyss

[00:10:58] 2003

[00:11:00] Is that right?

[00:11:01] Yes release in 2003

[00:11:03] But you know

[00:11:04] Not to foreshadow

[00:11:06] The twist

[00:11:07] Shot in 2001

[00:11:08] And we should say

[00:11:10] Spoiler alert, Titanic is sunk

[00:11:12] Yeah okay right yes

[00:11:13] So this does take place after Titanic

[00:11:15] RIP Titanic

[00:11:16] That is Ben thank you

[00:11:17] It is weird that it didn't come out in 2002

[00:11:20] Just to get that sweet 90 year sinking

[00:11:23] Yeah that's true

[00:11:24] Came out on the 91st anniversary ish

[00:11:27] Of the sinking

[00:11:28] Yeah I have a theory as to why that happened

[00:11:31] But I'll get to that later

[00:11:33] But this movie is about Jimmy C

[00:11:36] Going back to Titanic

[00:11:37] He's going underwater

[00:11:38] He wants to look at the wreckage

[00:11:40] There's no real specific goal in mind

[00:11:43] There's not a thing they're trying to learn

[00:11:45] Or discover

[00:11:46] They're not looking for heart of the ocean

[00:11:47] He's on the boat that is the boat

[00:11:49] That they used for Titanic

[00:11:50] It's called the academic

[00:11:52] Mitzlav Keldesh

[00:11:54] I can't

[00:11:55] Some Russian boat

[00:11:56] It was the boat he dived in like the 95

[00:11:59] Where he got the first footage of the Titanic

[00:12:01] That he used in the movie

[00:12:02] And yeah he wants to do it again

[00:12:03] Do more diving

[00:12:05] With these Russian friends of his

[00:12:07] And it's like with Bill Paxton

[00:12:08] And Bill Paxton

[00:12:09] And Bill Paxton

[00:12:10] So it looks like the real version of

[00:12:11] Well, Lewis Abernathy was always with him

[00:12:13] Right, because Lewis Abernathy is into this stuff

[00:12:15] Lewis Abernathy is the one who sort of got him

[00:12:17] Really into Titanic

[00:12:18] But then the arc of the film goes to the abyss

[00:12:20] Is partly that like Bill Paxton

[00:12:22] Who was in Titanic

[00:12:23] Right

[00:12:24] Playing the Cameron analog

[00:12:25] Right, James Cameron's like

[00:12:26] You should come on this dive we're gonna do

[00:12:28] And Bill Paxton's like

[00:12:29] Ah, I don't think so

[00:12:31] And James Cameron's like

[00:12:32] No, you gotta

[00:12:33] You gotta come

[00:12:34] Paxton like narrates the thing

[00:12:35] And it's sort of like

[00:12:36] They try to set it up

[00:12:37] Like it's a story about like

[00:12:38] Yeah

[00:12:39] They're getting us in through Paxton

[00:12:40] When my friend Jim Cameron

[00:12:42] Asked me if I wanted to go to Titanic

[00:12:44] I thought it'd never actually happen

[00:12:46] But here I was

[00:12:47] About to board a ship to go down to Titanic

[00:12:49] And he boards a ship and he's like

[00:12:51] Which way did the Titanic ship?

[00:12:53] And the Russian guy's like

[00:12:54] Russian, Russian, Russian

[00:12:55] And he's like man

[00:12:57] Who knew what kind of journey

[00:12:58] I was about to go on

[00:12:59] Right

[00:13:00] Like it's really clunky

[00:13:02] It's very, very clunky

[00:13:03] And here's the thing

[00:13:04] This movie has

[00:13:06] No propulsive narrative whatsoever

[00:13:08] It seems like it's going to

[00:13:10] With Paxton

[00:13:11] But then it's like

[00:13:12] Then Paxton went underwater

[00:13:13] And was like

[00:13:14] Oh wow

[00:13:15] There it is

[00:13:16] The Titanic

[00:13:17] Yeah

[00:13:18] And you're with him

[00:13:19] You're like

[00:13:20] That's definitely the Titanic

[00:13:21] And he's sort of fun to

[00:13:22] Watch, react for five minutes

[00:13:24] And then

[00:13:25] You're, I don't know

[00:13:26] Half an hour in

[00:13:27] And you're like

[00:13:28] Alright

[00:13:29] Let's wrap this up

[00:13:30] Right

[00:13:31] But you know

[00:13:32] You've got another 40 minutes

[00:13:33] Just so to go

[00:13:34] Yeah, this movie

[00:13:35] I mean

[00:13:36] They clearly just shot some stuff

[00:13:37] And then afterwards

[00:13:38] It's like watching someone

[00:13:39] Show you their like

[00:13:40] Vacation slides

[00:13:41] And they're trying to like

[00:13:42] Throw a narrative onto it

[00:13:43] But there's no tension

[00:13:44] Because you already know

[00:13:45] How the story ends

[00:13:46] Which is them back

[00:13:47] In their living room

[00:13:48] Showing you the slides

[00:13:49] Sure

[00:13:50] So like there

[00:13:51] All the narrations in past tense

[00:13:52] It is

[00:13:53] Being like

[00:13:54] I had no idea

[00:13:55] What was going to happen down there

[00:13:56] Underneath Titanic

[00:13:57] But then I saw this

[00:13:58] The Titanic

[00:13:59] Right

[00:14:00] That's what happened

[00:14:01] That's what happened

[00:14:02] I saw it

[00:14:03] Definitely existed down there

[00:14:04] And it was crazy

[00:14:05] Yeah

[00:14:06] And then let's reenact

[00:14:07] Some bits of the Titanic

[00:14:08] With not the actors from Titanic

[00:14:10] New actors

[00:14:11] No, remember those scenes

[00:14:12] You loved in Titanic

[00:14:13] What if the same director

[00:14:14] Made them shitty

[00:14:15] Yeah, same director

[00:14:16] Made them with actors

[00:14:17] Who are not particularly good

[00:14:18] Yeah

[00:14:19] Shorter

[00:14:20] Right

[00:14:21] And kind of almost

[00:14:22] You know like a

[00:14:23] Ken Burns documentary or whatever

[00:14:24] Yeah like

[00:14:25] Like a slow pen and an image

[00:14:26] Yeah

[00:14:27] And someone going

[00:14:28] Like I'm the captain here

[00:14:30] The captain of the Titanic

[00:14:32] But sometimes it even feels

[00:14:33] Like word for word recreations

[00:14:34] I mean they do the moment

[00:14:35] I talked about in the Titanic episode

[00:14:37] With Ismay going down in the ship

[00:14:39] Yes

[00:14:40] And they like frame it

[00:14:41] The same way with him

[00:14:42] Looking over the shoulder

[00:14:43] Which why?

[00:14:44] We saw Titanic

[00:14:45] No we liked Titanic

[00:14:46] We saw that movie

[00:14:47] It's good

[00:14:48] But you didn't see either

[00:14:49] These in theaters right

[00:14:50] No I saw neither of these

[00:14:51] In theaters

[00:14:52] But he's restaging the things

[00:14:53] And it's this weird

[00:14:54] Like they go down to

[00:14:55] The bottom of the ocean

[00:14:56] To look at Titanic

[00:14:57] Guess what

[00:14:58] It's like a rusty ship

[00:14:59] They find some like

[00:15:00] Cool little artifacts

[00:15:01] But most of it's just

[00:15:02] Like the rust you expect

[00:15:03] And then they'll like

[00:15:04] Super impose over that

[00:15:05] Like a weird CGI

[00:15:06] That would have looked like

[00:15:07] In Exploriedays

[00:15:08] But like very low five

[00:15:09] Pretty simple

[00:15:10] Because they don't have

[00:15:11] A 200 million dollar budget

[00:15:13] They have 15

[00:15:14] And then they'll overlay

[00:15:16] Over that

[00:15:17] Like blue translucent

[00:15:19] Like ghost

[00:15:20] Like you know

[00:15:21] Dramatic recreations

[00:15:22] They do a lot of like

[00:15:23] Picture in picture

[00:15:24] But it looks like

[00:15:25] Just a basic like

[00:15:26] Samsung demo

[00:15:28] At Best Buy

[00:15:29] It's 2003

[00:15:30] So it's just like

[00:15:31] There are four little boxes

[00:15:32] On the screen

[00:15:33] The main screen

[00:15:34] Is just some rusty barnacles

[00:15:35] On the edge of a ship

[00:15:36] And then there's like

[00:15:37] Here's what it would have looked like

[00:15:38] Here's a guy

[00:15:39] Doing a worse version

[00:15:40] Of Bernard Hill in Titanic

[00:15:41] And then here's James Cameron

[00:15:43] Going wow, wow that's Titanic

[00:15:44] I want to get to that

[00:15:46] There's not much James Cameron

[00:15:48] Very little

[00:15:49] James Cameron is not a character

[00:15:50] Quote unquote in this movie

[00:15:51] Obviously we hear that he

[00:15:53] Brought Bill Paxton in

[00:15:54] But Paxton's your character

[00:15:56] You see James Cameron

[00:15:58] A little bit

[00:15:59] He's not on the sub

[00:16:00] That Paxton's on

[00:16:01] He's on the other one

[00:16:02] They're two submersibles

[00:16:03] And we must be

[00:16:04] We can't even hang with Cameron

[00:16:05] With Paxton

[00:16:06] You'll cut to Cameron

[00:16:07] But he almost

[00:16:08] If you didn't know what he looked like

[00:16:09] You could almost just think

[00:16:10] He was another scientist

[00:16:11] Which is 100% why Paxton's

[00:16:12] In this movie

[00:16:13] Because Cameron clearly wanted

[00:16:14] Like someone the audience

[00:16:15] Could see through

[00:16:17] You know, see through their eyes

[00:16:18] And feel like they're on

[00:16:19] The expedition

[00:16:20] And didn't want to be

[00:16:21] That guy himself

[00:16:22] Right

[00:16:23] And he was like

[00:16:24] Bill Paxton's steady hand

[00:16:25] Audiences love him

[00:16:26] To his credit I guess

[00:16:27] Yeah

[00:16:28] He didn't want to make himself

[00:16:29] The star of the movie

[00:16:30] But maybe he should have

[00:16:31] Because this is his obsession

[00:16:32] 100%

[00:16:33] With Henry

[00:16:34] Right

[00:16:35] Why not?

[00:16:36] I don't know

[00:16:37] And Paxton clearly, you know

[00:16:38] Like

[00:16:39] Is interested by this stuff

[00:16:41] But he's no Titanic expert

[00:16:42] Everyone else we talk to

[00:16:43] When they go back above ground

[00:16:44] Like Abernathy's fucking

[00:16:45] Crazy about the shit

[00:16:46] Lou's Abernathy just to remind people

[00:16:48] He's the kind of big fat beardy guy

[00:16:50] Who gives the big ass

[00:16:52] Monologue in a Titanic

[00:16:54] Right

[00:16:55] And he's like a documentary maker

[00:16:56] James Cameron's real friend

[00:16:57] He's a horror filmmaker

[00:16:58] And James Cameron's friend

[00:16:59] And they both like dive

[00:17:00] And he fucking loves the Titanic

[00:17:01] And then they got this guy

[00:17:02] Who's like an expert on the way

[00:17:03] The Titanic looked inside

[00:17:05] I like that guy too

[00:17:06] I like the experts

[00:17:07] They were fun

[00:17:08] Experts are cool

[00:17:09] This is my problem with the movie

[00:17:10] This is a problem I have with the movie

[00:17:12] Is that Paxton's just a guy who's like

[00:17:14] Oh, this is cool

[00:17:15] But he doesn't really know that much

[00:17:17] But he understands that

[00:17:18] He's at the center of the film

[00:17:19] He's there for your wonder

[00:17:20] But he has to be there

[00:17:21] With a little bit of weight

[00:17:22] And sound like he knows

[00:17:23] What he's talking about

[00:17:24] And Paxton's performance in this film

[00:17:26] If I can call it that

[00:17:27] Reminds me of like

[00:17:28] When we'd be on vacation

[00:17:30] My family growing up

[00:17:31] And my mom would be like

[00:17:32] We should go to this art museum

[00:17:33] Or we should go to these ruins

[00:17:35] And my dad didn't give a shit

[00:17:36] But had to act like

[00:17:38] He was in awe

[00:17:39] Because he knew it was good

[00:17:40] For us to be going

[00:17:41] So he kept on being like

[00:17:42] Guys, this is really old

[00:17:43] This is pretty

[00:17:44] Yeah, that's

[00:17:45] Ooh, that's crazy

[00:17:46] You hear that kids?

[00:17:47] That's incredible

[00:17:48] A thousand years old

[00:17:49] Yeah, wow

[00:17:50] You griff

[00:17:51] You should be paying attention

[00:17:52] To this

[00:17:53] Put down the Game Boy color

[00:17:54] I'm gonna be the dad

[00:17:56] Who is actually excited

[00:17:57] And the kids are like

[00:17:58] It's fine

[00:17:59] But that's Paxton

[00:18:00] Seems like he's just kind of like

[00:18:02] Oh, god, I really need to be playing up

[00:18:03] How amazing this is

[00:18:04] And they just keep on cutting to him

[00:18:06] Going like

[00:18:07] It's crazy to think that

[00:18:08] 90 years ago

[00:18:09] Someone was touching that banister

[00:18:11] Sure

[00:18:12] And then they show a ghost

[00:18:13] Touching the banister

[00:18:14] And you're like

[00:18:15] Okay

[00:18:16] Yeah

[00:18:17] The first time he says it

[00:18:18] You're like

[00:18:19] Yeah, oh wow

[00:18:20] Mortality, life, everything, cycles

[00:18:21] He says it's 80,000 times

[00:18:23] Nonetheless

[00:18:24] Nonetheless

[00:18:25] Nevertheless

[00:18:26] My argument, nevertheless

[00:18:27] My argument for

[00:18:28] Why Ghost Theobas is maybe a little better than Neyland's Theobas

[00:18:30] Is it has a point

[00:18:32] And a pretty solid through line

[00:18:35] Which is like

[00:18:36] We're gonna explore the wreck of the Titanic

[00:18:38] Here's how we did it

[00:18:39] Here's us doing it

[00:18:40] Here's 15 minutes

[00:18:42] Perhaps needless of us

[00:18:43] Rescuing a little like broken robot

[00:18:45] Let's get to that

[00:18:46] We'll get to talk about that for a while

[00:18:47] And then like

[00:18:48] Here's a bit of reflection

[00:18:49] And another little twist

[00:18:50] That we'll also get to in a second

[00:18:52] But, and then that's it

[00:18:53] You know, it's

[00:18:54] I know what's going on with the movie

[00:18:55] I get its point

[00:18:56] See, I think

[00:18:57] If you thought in IMAX 3D

[00:18:58] I'd probably appreciate

[00:19:00] The sort of wonder of the imagery

[00:19:02] Well, and just the

[00:19:03] I mean look

[00:19:04] It's kind of visually unsophisticated

[00:19:05] Like, you know

[00:19:06] It's clear, unfussy imagery

[00:19:08] But you look at the framing of everything

[00:19:09] And it's so clear that it was to utilize 3D

[00:19:11] And there are long sections

[00:19:12] Where you're sort of just looking at

[00:19:14] Technology

[00:19:15] Or looking at pieces of the ship

[00:19:16] With nothing really going on

[00:19:17] Other than

[00:19:18] Bill Paxson going like

[00:19:19] Hey kids, look at that

[00:19:20] Yeah

[00:19:21] But you can tell like

[00:19:22] Well, the way that's framed

[00:19:23] That's the bow of the ship

[00:19:24] And it would be coming out towards the center

[00:19:25] And it'd be cool in 3D

[00:19:26] You know?

[00:19:27] Yeah

[00:19:28] But you're losing that

[00:19:29] But I just think it looks a little clunky

[00:19:31] And it feels like they shot a bunch of footage

[00:19:33] Without any real thought

[00:19:34] About like how to construct a narrative later

[00:19:36] And then in post had to kind of like

[00:19:38] Come up with fucking something

[00:19:39] And like a lot of voice over

[00:19:41] That is just going like

[00:19:43] It was crazy looking at that

[00:19:44] And realizing

[00:19:45] Lots and lots

[00:19:46] There are a couple lines I want to throw out

[00:19:48] That were standouts to me

[00:19:50] One is

[00:19:51] So they have these submersibles

[00:19:53] But then they have these little box robots

[00:19:55] That are able to like weave a tether

[00:19:57] Yeah, we see

[00:19:58] I think we see them a little bit in Titanic too

[00:20:00] Yeah

[00:20:01] It's the thing you send into the ship

[00:20:02] Because obviously your big sub

[00:20:03] Can't go explore the rooms

[00:20:05] But the idea with this is that they

[00:20:06] They're able to weave this tether

[00:20:08] That links them to the video screen

[00:20:11] But it's like a spider web

[00:20:12] So it's not like they have

[00:20:13] A finite amount of tether to begin with

[00:20:15] They're like

[00:20:16] Creating tether as they go deeper and deeper in

[00:20:18] There are two little box robots

[00:20:20] Their name Jake and Elwood

[00:20:21] Blues Brothers

[00:20:22] Funny 5 comedy points

[00:20:23] Whatever

[00:20:24] Right?

[00:20:25] 5 comedy points

[00:20:26] 2

[00:20:27] 5

[00:20:28] 1 per robot

[00:20:29] 1, 2

[00:20:30] 2.5 per robot 5

[00:20:32] They are

[00:20:34] Polluting them around

[00:20:36] And Bill Paxton puts on his serious reading glasses

[00:20:39] And is looking into the thing

[00:20:41] Yeah I like to serious reading models

[00:20:42] I did too

[00:20:43] He's a sweet guy

[00:20:44] He's a sweet guy

[00:20:45] He's never done anything bad

[00:20:46] I just want to like Bill Paxton

[00:20:47] Yes

[00:20:49] There's one moment in this movie

[00:20:51] That I think he crushes

[00:20:52] He's got a little Abin Custeller routine

[00:20:54] With the Russian guy who's in his submersible

[00:20:55] Yeah they're cute

[00:20:56] What happens if the pressure goes too low

[00:20:58] And he goes

[00:20:59] We're screwed unless we drop the battery

[00:21:01] And he goes

[00:21:02] Why wouldn't you drop the battery

[00:21:03] And he goes it's pretty expensive

[00:21:04] And he's like how expensive

[00:21:05] 250,000 dollars

[00:21:06] And then Bill Paxton takes like a moment

[00:21:08] And he goes

[00:21:09] I mean can I write you a check

[00:21:11] And you're like okay great

[00:21:12] I mean that's

[00:21:13] That's 5 comedy points

[00:21:14] No question

[00:21:15] He nails that

[00:21:17] But he puts on serious glasses

[00:21:19] And he's maneuvering the little thing

[00:21:21] With their mo control handles

[00:21:22] And then they cut to James Cameron

[00:21:24] And Bill Paxton has this real sense of awe and wonder

[00:21:26] And he's very focused and serious

[00:21:27] And it's cool

[00:21:28] And they cut to James Cameron

[00:21:29] He goes oh man

[00:21:30] It's just like piloting a helicopter

[00:21:32] And it's like okay fuck you

[00:21:33] Yeah

[00:21:34] Like he does this offhand like

[00:21:35] Oh yeah it's like a helicopter

[00:21:37] This is easy I can do this

[00:21:38] I just learned something fascinating about Bill Paxton

[00:21:40] Sure

[00:21:41] As far as I can tell he hasn't done anything bad

[00:21:43] Which is good although this is cursory

[00:21:45] You looked up Bill Paxton bad things

[00:21:47] To make sure we weren't lauding a man

[00:21:49] Bill Paxton

[00:21:50] Yeah right

[00:21:51] Fairly yeah

[00:21:52] Bill Paxton was in the crowd

[00:21:54] On the day of John F. Kennedy's assassination

[00:21:57] When he emerged from the hotel in the morning

[00:21:59] And there are pictures of him

[00:22:01] Being lifted above the crowd

[00:22:02] Little Bill Paxton

[00:22:03] 8 years old

[00:22:04] Wow

[00:22:05] Little Billy Paxton

[00:22:06] He's that

[00:22:07] Jeez

[00:22:08] So there's something you didn't know about

[00:22:10] I knew he was from Texas

[00:22:11] They should make a documentary about that

[00:22:12] He's got a great accent

[00:22:14] Yeah and you know what

[00:22:15] Watching this movie made me realize

[00:22:17] How often he doesn't use his real voice in films

[00:22:20] Yeah

[00:22:21] Because so often if he's playing Southern

[00:22:23] He'll actually amplify his accent from this

[00:22:25] Right

[00:22:26] He'll go sort of more rural

[00:22:28] Sure

[00:22:29] Or he does a sort of like flat

[00:22:31] Sort of

[00:22:32] Mid-Atlantic thing but with a little twang

[00:22:35] He always says that

[00:22:36] Yeah I can't do it

[00:22:37] But he's got a lot of twang in this

[00:22:39] And he's funny and he's nice

[00:22:41] He's a nice boy and I like him

[00:22:43] Same

[00:22:44] There's a moment where he has a

[00:22:48] A bit of a Mark Wahlberg 9-11

[00:22:51] If I'd been there the plane would have gone down

[00:22:53] Kind of thing

[00:22:54] Does he?

[00:22:55] Yes, it's little

[00:22:56] I don't fall for too much

[00:22:57] What is it?

[00:22:58] Well they're looking at the ship

[00:23:00] And they're remarking upon the fact that

[00:23:02] Just remind me

[00:23:03] The cabin boys locked the gates

[00:23:05] Pow

[00:23:09] Pow

[00:23:11] Wanted to undercut your pow

[00:23:13] Yeah

[00:23:14] And he's like

[00:23:15] Oh man look at that a locked gate

[00:23:17] And then he's like

[00:23:18] Oh that must have been when the

[00:23:19] When the stewards locked the gates to keep the

[00:23:21] The blow deck passengers

[00:23:23] From getting to the lifeboats

[00:23:25] And he goes

[00:23:26] Man if I was them on that day

[00:23:27] I would just climb over that gate

[00:23:29] I would have gotten through

[00:23:31] Sure you would have Bill

[00:23:32] Right

[00:23:33] Yeah

[00:23:34] Come on

[00:23:35] Whatever

[00:23:36] He's free as such

[00:23:37] And he's in a sub

[00:23:38] He's at the bottom of the fucking ocean

[00:23:39] But then there's a lot of

[00:23:40] Like one you could tell that he's like

[00:23:41] Oh shit

[00:23:42] Like Jim's paying me $4 million

[00:23:43] And he gave me a free ticket down to the bottom of the ocean

[00:23:45] I gotta keep saying stuff

[00:23:46] I gotta sing for my supper

[00:23:47] Like he's narrating a lot

[00:23:49] Because it's like

[00:23:50] Well that's my job

[00:23:51] My job is to like make this compelling for audience

[00:23:53] Yeah

[00:23:54] But um

[00:23:55] I'm sure there's a lot of

[00:23:56] Bill Paxton rambling on the cutting room floor

[00:23:59] Right yeah

[00:24:00] Um but he like you know

[00:24:02] Oh they look at a glass and a vase

[00:24:04] There's a glass of water and a chalice

[00:24:07] And they're like

[00:24:08] That's crazy to think that someone took a sip

[00:24:10] Put it back down on that table

[00:24:12] And then you see the CGI of the guy

[00:24:14] Lifting up right

[00:24:15] All that sort of stuff

[00:24:16] Alright

[00:24:17] We're gonna move on from

[00:24:18] Ghostly Abyss in a minute

[00:24:19] So

[00:24:20] What do you got?

[00:24:21] What's left?

[00:24:22] Okay I got a couple

[00:24:23] You got a couple things?

[00:24:24] I also have some final thoughts

[00:24:27] But go ahead

[00:24:28] Go ahead

[00:24:29] Uh there's a moment

[00:24:31] I'm gonna misquote him

[00:24:32] Okay

[00:24:33] Where they're back on

[00:24:34] The ship

[00:24:35] Uh huh

[00:24:36] After?

[00:24:37] Uh in the middle

[00:24:38] They've done like one day

[00:24:39] Two days

[00:24:40] Yeah they do a few dives

[00:24:41] Right they do a few dives

[00:24:42] So they've done like one or two dives

[00:24:43] And they're talking there

[00:24:44] And they sort of talk about

[00:24:47] Oh that's the other interesting thing this movie does

[00:24:49] Because you brought up the Murdoch controversy

[00:24:51] Yes

[00:24:52] In the Titanic episode

[00:24:53] Yes

[00:24:54] About how a lot of people

[00:24:55] People were mad because

[00:24:56] They showed him firing the gun

[00:24:57] Right

[00:24:58] All that sort of stuff

[00:24:59] This movie does a lot of scrubbing Murdoch's reputation

[00:25:01] It does

[00:25:02] They say Murdoch

[00:25:03] They say his name a lot

[00:25:05] They talk about his name

[00:25:07] A lot

[00:25:08] They talk about like

[00:25:09] He was an honorable man

[00:25:10] He did this and that

[00:25:11] It's obviously the thing

[00:25:12] That Cameron feels bad about

[00:25:13] Like everything else he's like

[00:25:14] Fuck you

[00:25:15] I know what I'm talking about

[00:25:16] That one he's like

[00:25:17] Alright maybe I was

[00:25:18] Yeah

[00:25:19] Because they said on one side of the boat

[00:25:20] They weren't filling up the lifeboats

[00:25:21] To full capacity

[00:25:22] The rule is

[00:25:23] Women and children first

[00:25:24] Not women and children only

[00:25:25] So they were putting like

[00:25:26] Ten people on a lifeboat

[00:25:27] Not letting any men on

[00:25:28] Yeah well that was

[00:25:29] Yeah that was one of the guys

[00:25:30] Who was doing it

[00:25:31] And then they go put on the other side

[00:25:32] Murdoch

[00:25:33] And then they show like

[00:25:34] A beautiful picture of Murdoch

[00:25:35] And they go he was putting as many people on as he could

[00:25:38] No delineation between lower class

[00:25:41] And upper class

[00:25:42] You know like Murdoch was the man

[00:25:43] They keep on pounding in the Murdoch thing

[00:25:45] But they're talking about that

[00:25:47] And talking about sort of survival of the fittest

[00:25:49] And you know

[00:25:50] The people on the row boats

[00:25:52] Who were further out

[00:25:53] Who didn't row back

[00:25:54] You know

[00:25:55] And they show the recreation of Molly Brown

[00:25:57] Uh huh

[00:25:58] Like not saying the Kathy Bates speech

[00:26:00] But kind of looking upset

[00:26:01] That they weren't going back there

[00:26:02] Right

[00:26:03] Right

[00:26:04] And they were on the boat talking about that

[00:26:06] And Abernathy's like

[00:26:08] Come on man it's suicide if you go back there

[00:26:10] You have like a thousand people in the water

[00:26:12] They're screaming, they're cold

[00:26:13] They try to pull the boat overboard

[00:26:15] The thing would sink

[00:26:16] You're already hypothermic

[00:26:17] Like you can't go back there

[00:26:18] And the other woman's like are you crazy

[00:26:20] Like be a human

[00:26:21] Like this and that

[00:26:22] And Bill Paxton has this line

[00:26:24] That I'm gonna misquote

[00:26:25] And he words it very beautifully

[00:26:27] He does, he does, he does a good job

[00:26:28] But he's like the

[00:26:29] Fuck you're right

[00:26:30] The test

[00:26:31] It has been proven time and time again

[00:26:33] That the test of morality and heroism

[00:26:35] Happens in the individual not in the group

[00:26:37] Yeah

[00:26:38] And he words it even more beautifully than that

[00:26:40] Essentially it's like you know

[00:26:41] Individual people do all these wonderful

[00:26:43] And he's not saying it this way

[00:26:44] But he says it very poetically

[00:26:45] He does, he does

[00:26:46] And it almost is so good that you're like

[00:26:49] Did they like reset

[00:26:50] And get that just right

[00:26:51] Or something

[00:26:52] Cause it does come out of his mouth

[00:26:53] Very beautifully

[00:26:54] And he does it off the cuff

[00:26:55] And it's like

[00:26:56] And they hard cut out of that scene

[00:26:57] And you're like

[00:26:58] That is an incredible point

[00:26:59] Like that's

[00:27:00] You know

[00:27:01] Group mentality changes

[00:27:02] The psychology of every individual within it

[00:27:04] You know

[00:27:05] It's very easy to sit back in your armchair

[00:27:07] And go like

[00:27:08] Like Bill Paxton

[00:27:09] Like I would have climbed over the gates

[00:27:10] You know

[00:27:11] Or I would have rode back

[00:27:12] But it's like

[00:27:13] If you're surrounded by that many people

[00:27:15] Of course no

[00:27:16] I mean that's

[00:27:17] You can't re-litigate this

[00:27:18] And be like

[00:27:19] Oh well if I was on Titanic

[00:27:20] Yeah come on please

[00:27:21] The ship literally sank an hour

[00:27:22] After I hit the fucking iceberg

[00:27:23] Come on

[00:27:24] Come on

[00:27:25] So they're resetting a lot of the things

[00:27:26] You know

[00:27:27] Ismay, Cravenly

[00:27:28] Getting on the lifeboat

[00:27:29] And

[00:27:30] Letting other people die

[00:27:31] Andrews with the guilt

[00:27:33] And the weight

[00:27:34] Of the thing

[00:27:35] You know about

[00:27:36] Not fighting harder to get more lifeboats on the ship

[00:27:38] Yeah Andrews is the

[00:27:39] That's sort of fun when they

[00:27:40] Yeah I mean fun

[00:27:41] It's interesting when they explore

[00:27:42] At least Cameron and Paxton's

[00:27:44] Idea of Andrews

[00:27:45] Which is

[00:27:46] Especially Cameron's

[00:27:47] Which is like

[00:27:48] Yeah

[00:27:49] Here was someone who obviously wanted more lifeboats

[00:27:50] And he caved to

[00:27:51] The pressures of the company

[00:27:53] To have less

[00:27:54] And maybe that tormented him

[00:27:56] We're projecting a little bit

[00:27:58] Obviously we don't know too much

[00:27:59] About what everyone felt

[00:28:01] On the last hour of the Titanic

[00:28:03] There's some stories of Andrews

[00:28:05] Doing X and Y but you know

[00:28:06] They ask the question of like

[00:28:07] Which guilt would weigh heavier

[00:28:09] Ismay for not letting

[00:28:11] Andrews put more lifeboats on the ship

[00:28:13] Or Andrews for not fighting that battle harder

[00:28:15] Right

[00:28:16] And then later in the film

[00:28:18] The guy who's like

[00:28:19] The Titanic interior expert

[00:28:21] Who's really into like

[00:28:22] The wood carvings

[00:28:23] And the fucking windows

[00:28:24] And all this version they do

[00:28:25] Oh shit we didn't know

[00:28:26] The windows looked like that

[00:28:27] That's a huge discovery

[00:28:28] But they're telling you

[00:28:29] How important the discovery is

[00:28:30] I know when they try and tell you

[00:28:31] It turns out there was stained glass

[00:28:32] In this inside

[00:28:33] And we're like

[00:28:34] Okay yeah

[00:28:35] I mean

[00:28:36] If you were a Titanic scholar

[00:28:38] That would be interesting

[00:28:39] I don't know if anyone else

[00:28:40] Would really care

[00:28:41] But that feels like my mom

[00:28:42] At the museum being like

[00:28:43] Guys this is really cool

[00:28:44] Like empathetically trying

[00:28:46] To get you to care

[00:28:47] Whereas my dad's like

[00:28:48] Boys look at this

[00:28:49] They

[00:28:51] He says like

[00:28:53] You know

[00:28:54] You just have to imagine

[00:28:56] You know if you were able to go back

[00:28:58] And tell Andrews that 90 years later

[00:29:00] These things that he designed would

[00:29:02] Be here at the bottom of the ocean

[00:29:03] With us looking at him

[00:29:04] What do you think he would say?

[00:29:05] I go I think he'd say

[00:29:07] I wish I had fought for the life boat

[00:29:09] Wish I wasn't dead

[00:29:10] But they make it like he'd be like

[00:29:12] You know what it was all worth it

[00:29:14] James Cameron gets into submersible

[00:29:16] And looks at my wooden table

[00:29:18] I think he would have said

[00:29:19] Like yeah I should have probably

[00:29:20] Made the ship a little better

[00:29:21] Yeah I don't know

[00:29:22] It sucks

[00:29:23] It's a bummer I'm dead

[00:29:24] I am a dead person

[00:29:25] Okay minute 50

[00:29:26] Major conflict comes in

[00:29:28] Go ahead

[00:29:29] They're diving into

[00:29:30] Are you talking about the stupid thing

[00:29:31] Getting it's not a conflict

[00:29:32] Unless the conflict is between

[00:29:34] Which one is it

[00:29:35] Is it a which

[00:29:36] Lwood

[00:29:37] Between Lwood and ceiling

[00:29:39] So

[00:29:42] This is where I was

[00:29:44] Sort of into the ghost of the abyss

[00:29:45] And then this started happening

[00:29:46] And I was like

[00:29:47] This will be two minutes right

[00:29:48] And then 20 minutes later

[00:29:49] I was like

[00:29:50] I really don't care

[00:29:51] I don't care

[00:29:52] This was my favorite part

[00:29:53] They go into the like

[00:29:54] This crack in the ship

[00:29:55] And they're like

[00:29:56] Oh shit this jagged glass

[00:29:58] It might tear the tether

[00:29:59] This is a suicide mission

[00:30:01] And James like

[00:30:02] I'm gonna do it

[00:30:03] I'm gonna fucking do it

[00:30:04] And he steers like a helicopter

[00:30:05] The little thing in

[00:30:06] Humble bragging

[00:30:07] And they get through and they're like

[00:30:09] Oh man that's awesome

[00:30:10] And then it gets stuck

[00:30:12] Up on the top of the roof

[00:30:13] And they're like

[00:30:14] What the fuck's going on

[00:30:15] And the other ones like

[00:30:16] Looking around

[00:30:17] They got Jake looking at Lwood

[00:30:18] And he's like

[00:30:19] What the fuck

[00:30:20] What the fuck

[00:30:21] And James like freaking out

[00:30:22] They're like

[00:30:23] Abort abort abort

[00:30:24] We gotta get out of here

[00:30:25] We're losing the camera box

[00:30:26] You do see him lose his cool

[00:30:28] You see like

[00:30:29] A sliver of the camera

[00:30:30] And we hear about

[00:30:31] Of midge

[00:30:32] Yes and they're like

[00:30:33] Let's just cut our losses

[00:30:34] And get up out of there

[00:30:35] And then they're like

[00:30:36] So how was it

[00:30:37] And he was like

[00:30:38] Well these two little robots

[00:30:39] They worked perfectly

[00:30:40] For the entire mission

[00:30:41] Until there's one day

[00:30:42] Of complete nutter failure

[00:30:43] He's a really cranky baby

[00:30:44] He just loses it

[00:30:45] And then they're like

[00:30:46] Talking about like

[00:30:47] You can't go back down there

[00:30:48] Jim it's a suicide mission

[00:30:49] How much worse is it

[00:30:50] To lose one

[00:30:51] Or lose both

[00:30:52] You know what you want

[00:30:53] And he's like

[00:30:54] I'm fucking going back

[00:30:55] I'm doing it

[00:30:56] And then it's high stakes

[00:30:57] Race against time

[00:30:58] They gotta send

[00:30:59] Jake in

[00:31:00] With a little hook

[00:31:01] And he's got a hook Lwood

[00:31:02] From the seal

[00:31:03] And get him out of there

[00:31:04] Guys are you

[00:31:05] On the edge of your seat

[00:31:06] Listening to this

[00:31:07] Cause I wasn't

[00:31:08] And they're like

[00:31:09] Hooking him

[00:31:10] And he's like

[00:31:11] I think I got it

[00:31:12] I feel a lag

[00:31:13] I feel a lag

[00:31:14] I'm steering

[00:31:15] I feel a lag

[00:31:16] And then the other guys

[00:31:17] In the other submersible

[00:31:18] Go like

[00:31:19] He did it

[00:31:20] Like he yells at them

[00:31:21] They're like

[00:31:22] You're out

[00:31:23] You're clear

[00:31:24] I'm not asking about that

[00:31:25] Do I have L?

[00:31:26] I would never want to be

[00:31:27] Like a spaceship with James Cameron

[00:31:28] Okay and then

[00:31:29] They play just the two of us

[00:31:30] And it gets cheeky and funny

[00:31:31] Right

[00:31:32] And they show Jake and Lwood

[00:31:33] Together going back up to the

[00:31:34] Just look to L

[00:31:36] We're gonna make it if we drive

[00:31:38] You're like

[00:31:39] Okay this is getting

[00:31:40] Like really dad humor

[00:31:41] Right

[00:31:42] And then they see the guy

[00:31:43] You see one of the guys

[00:31:44] And he's like

[00:31:45] Unbelievable

[00:31:46] We did it

[00:31:47] We rescued Lwood with Jake

[00:31:48] I'll never forget this day

[00:31:49] September 11th, 2001

[00:31:51] Yeah I was

[00:31:52] Boom

[00:31:53] Red Bull

[00:31:54] Yink

[00:31:55] They get up onto the ship

[00:31:56] Cameron's pumping his fists in the air

[00:31:58] I saved a robot

[00:31:59] I saved a robot

[00:32:00] Bill Paxton's like

[00:32:01] Hey

[00:32:02] Worst terrorist attack

[00:32:03] In the history of America

[00:32:05] Have you checked the TV?

[00:32:06] Yeah

[00:32:07] And then the next five minutes

[00:32:08] Are

[00:32:09] Watching everyone

[00:32:10] Find out about

[00:32:11] Quiet reflection

[00:32:12] September 11th

[00:32:13] About September 11th

[00:32:14] And it is weird

[00:32:16] Because it is

[00:32:17] They are

[00:32:18] At the same time

[00:32:19] Throughout the movie

[00:32:20] They've been quietly reflecting

[00:32:21] On the tragedy of the Titanic

[00:32:23] And like

[00:32:24] A global incident

[00:32:25] That is like such a

[00:32:26] You know dramatic loss of life

[00:32:28] And such a you know

[00:32:29] Imagine the last person

[00:32:30] To touch that band

[00:32:31] Yeah

[00:32:32] And you know

[00:32:33] And like

[00:32:34] There's reverence

[00:32:35] I would say

[00:32:36] I mean they're also

[00:32:37] You know

[00:32:38] But there is

[00:32:39] And like

[00:32:40] And yeah

[00:32:41] And then

[00:32:42] I mean

[00:32:43] I get that they couldn't

[00:32:44] Not

[00:32:45] Acknowledge it

[00:32:46] Because it does seem to have

[00:32:47] A

[00:32:48] It's weird

[00:32:49] It's a weird little twist

[00:32:50] Yeah and then they do this thing of like

[00:32:51] They do these like

[00:32:52] Cabin reflections

[00:32:53] Yeah and then like

[00:32:54] Suddenly our mission feels so stupid

[00:32:55] You know I mean

[00:32:56] What we're doing is

[00:32:57] This is so frivolous

[00:32:58] In the wake of this

[00:32:59] These real things

[00:33:00] Here we were

[00:33:01] All ramped up about a robot

[00:33:02] Should we even continue

[00:33:03] And then they're like

[00:33:04] Nah we should continue

[00:33:05] And they go back down

[00:33:06] The next day

[00:33:07] But all of that

[00:33:08] Is done in narration

[00:33:09] Like voiceover

[00:33:10] Which makes me think

[00:33:11] That they

[00:33:12] Like finish filming

[00:33:13] And then they got back to land

[00:33:14] And they were like

[00:33:15] Well no one wants us

[00:33:16] Like 9-11 happened

[00:33:17] Which is why I think it's sad

[00:33:18] And it's sad for two years

[00:33:19] Why it maybe took

[00:33:20] Took a little while

[00:33:21] And the editing feels

[00:33:22] Really slapped that

[00:33:23] But it also

[00:33:24] It probably took a while to get it

[00:33:25] Ready

[00:33:26] Right the 3D

[00:33:27] And all the conversion

[00:33:28] But it just feels

[00:33:29] It feels odd and they go back down

[00:33:30] And they see the stuff

[00:33:31] And you know

[00:33:32] They're not searching for the heart

[00:33:33] Of the ocean

[00:33:34] There's nothing they're trying

[00:33:35] To find

[00:33:36] But they saved Jake and Elwood

[00:33:37] And they

[00:33:38] They throw this kind of

[00:33:39] Heavy handed like

[00:33:40] Well now

[00:33:41] We were looking at tragedy

[00:33:42] From a distance

[00:33:43] But now we know what

[00:33:44] It's like to live through

[00:33:45] And I'm

[00:33:46] Alright that's enough

[00:33:47] Bill Paxton

[00:33:48] That's enough ghostly abyss

[00:33:49] Performance review

[00:33:50] I think Bill Paxton is good in this

[00:33:51] B plus

[00:33:52] Okay

[00:33:53] That's the end of ghostly abyss

[00:33:54] Ghostly abyss

[00:33:55] I just

[00:33:56] I did have one dumb point to make

[00:33:57] Sure

[00:33:58] That's very inappropriate

[00:33:59] Because you just started

[00:34:00] Talking about 9-11

[00:34:01] But we have discussed

[00:34:03] In the past ghost logic

[00:34:04] Sure

[00:34:05] And I really started

[00:34:07] Thinking a lot about water ghosts

[00:34:09] Or wet spirits

[00:34:11] That are trapped

[00:34:12] In boats and vessels

[00:34:14] Right

[00:34:15] That's boring

[00:34:16] Comparatively to like a house

[00:34:17] At least you can like haunt people

[00:34:19] Where you get to haunt fish

[00:34:22] Love the ad

[00:34:23] My two cents whenever I can

[00:34:25] You're welcome

[00:34:26] Let's play the box office game

[00:34:28] I was about to say

[00:34:29] Let's play the box office game

[00:34:31] Ghosts of the Abyss opens

[00:34:33] Number 13 at the box office

[00:34:35] That's pretty good

[00:34:36] With 1.4 million dollars

[00:34:37] It eventually grosses

[00:34:39] 17 million dollars

[00:34:40] At the domestic box office

[00:34:42] And a few extra worldwide

[00:34:43] That's basically it

[00:34:44] Okay

[00:34:45] It is like

[00:34:46] I think it's probably still one of the

[00:34:47] Top 10 documentaries though

[00:34:48] Because you know

[00:34:49] That's not a

[00:34:50] Yeah

[00:34:51] That's not a deep list

[00:34:52] There are some other IMAX documentaries

[00:34:53] That played for like a decade

[00:34:54] And made 100 million dollars

[00:34:55] If you look at the

[00:34:56] What? Not a hundred million

[00:34:57] I swear to God

[00:34:58] One of them

[00:34:59] I think the Everest documentary

[00:35:00] Ended up clearing like 95

[00:35:01] I'm gonna look it up

[00:35:03] Everest made 87

[00:35:05] Good job Everest

[00:35:06] Yeah

[00:35:07] And there was a

[00:35:08] Space station one that made a lot too

[00:35:09] Anyway

[00:35:10] Space station 3D

[00:35:12] Yeah

[00:35:13] Made 93

[00:35:14] Thank you

[00:35:15] T-Rex back to the Cretaceous

[00:35:16] Made 53

[00:35:17] Okay

[00:35:18] On and on it goes

[00:35:19] Ghosts of the Abyss

[00:35:20] Because those movies would play for a decade

[00:35:21] Not in the top five

[00:35:22] It's 13

[00:35:23] 13

[00:35:24] Lucky number 13

[00:35:25] Not in the top 12

[00:35:26] The movie above it is

[00:35:27] Piglet's Big Movie

[00:35:28] Oh well

[00:35:29] Yeah

[00:35:30] Which I don't remember

[00:35:31] Yeah it followed the Tigger movie

[00:35:32] Number one this year

[00:35:33] This weekend

[00:35:34] Perceded Poo's Heffelup movie

[00:35:36] Which was April 11th, 2003

[00:35:38] Okay

[00:35:39] I was a

[00:35:40] A senior in high school

[00:35:41] Okay let me just grab my

[00:35:42] No sorry a junior in high school

[00:35:43] Let me just grab myself

[00:35:44] Time and place

[00:35:45] Time and place

[00:35:46] Okay go on

[00:35:47] Was a comedy film

[00:35:48] With a legend

[00:35:49] Or not legend that's the wrong word

[00:35:51] With a star of comedy

[00:35:53] Big star of comedy

[00:35:54] And a legend of acting

[00:35:56] Facing off

[00:35:58] In a movie that is

[00:36:00] Bad

[00:36:02] And was later turned into a TV show

[00:36:04] Oh interesting

[00:36:05] Yes

[00:36:06] TV

[00:36:07] It opened to 42 million dollars

[00:36:10] Which in 2003 is a lot

[00:36:12] For a comedy

[00:36:13] Yeah

[00:36:14] It grossed 135

[00:36:16] 200 worldwide

[00:36:17] Well see I was going to guess

[00:36:18] What was bringing down the house

[00:36:19] No

[00:36:20] But it's not I know that came out

[00:36:21] Around that time

[00:36:22] It's around but I think that was

[00:36:23] Like a Christmas or Thanksgiving

[00:36:24] No that was an early

[00:36:25] Early part of the year

[00:36:26] That was a spring release

[00:36:27] Okay so it's

[00:36:28] They made it into a TV show

[00:36:30] So when you're saying

[00:36:31] It's like it's a big comedy

[00:36:32] Star and like someone who's

[00:36:33] More known as a serious

[00:36:34] Dramatic actor

[00:36:35] Is that what you're saying

[00:36:36] A two-hander

[00:36:38] One is an actor who was just

[00:36:41] A big star of comedies at the time

[00:36:43] Huge huge star

[00:36:44] He's still a star of comedies

[00:36:45] Although his star has diminished

[00:36:47] The other is an Oscar winning

[00:36:49] Legendary actor

[00:36:50] Is it a DeNiro comedy

[00:36:51] No but you know you're on the right track

[00:36:53] In that sort of

[00:36:54] Oh I know exactly what film it is

[00:36:56] I almost forgot that it existed

[00:36:58] It is anger management

[00:37:00] Adam Sandler and Jack Nicholson

[00:37:01] Easy to forget that one exists

[00:37:03] Easy to forget that was made to a TV show

[00:37:06] That aired for like a hundred episodes

[00:37:08] Yeah but very loose adaptation

[00:37:09] Okay yeah huge hit

[00:37:11] Huge hit

[00:37:12] Number two is a film that I saw in theaters

[00:37:14] Starring an actor that I hold near and dear to my heart

[00:37:18] It is in its second week

[00:37:20] Coming down from its number one position

[00:37:22] The week before

[00:37:23] It has made twenty six million dollars

[00:37:25] It will gross forty six

[00:37:27] Ninety seven worldwide

[00:37:28] It's a fun little thriller with a gimmick

[00:37:31] Thriller with a gimmick

[00:37:33] Identity

[00:37:34] Real gimmick

[00:37:35] No that was two thousand two

[00:37:36] Or maybe it was two thousand

[00:37:37] I can't remember

[00:37:38] Okay it's got a gimmick

[00:37:39] Is the gimmick a twist or is it in the setup

[00:37:41] It's in the way it's the story is told

[00:37:44] It's basically real time

[00:37:46] Basically real time

[00:37:47] I think it's entirely real time

[00:37:49] It's basically in real time

[00:37:54] It's a little thriller

[00:37:56] You love it

[00:37:57] It was number one the week before

[00:37:58] I love the actor

[00:37:59] I like the movie

[00:38:01] I've always sort of stuck up for the movie

[00:38:02] It's a silly movie

[00:38:04] It's from a director of many films that are bad

[00:38:07] It's not a director of many films that are bad

[00:38:10] Many many films that are bad

[00:38:11] And some that are okay

[00:38:13] That's got a gimmick

[00:38:14] I believe you auditioned for this director once

[00:38:17] Oh oh I know exactly what it is

[00:38:19] It is phone booth

[00:38:21] Starring your boy Colin Farrell

[00:38:23] And Joel Schumacher who I did audition for

[00:38:26] And he told me that I over thought sex

[00:38:28] We talked about it in a previous episode

[00:38:30] Who else is in that movie

[00:38:31] You got Keith for Sutherland

[00:38:33] And then you got Kady Holmes

[00:38:35] And then you got Boris Whitaker

[00:38:37] Katie Holmes

[00:38:38] Radha Mitchell

[00:38:39] Ooh the great Radha Mitchell

[00:38:40] That's a fun little movie

[00:38:41] Have you seen it?

[00:38:42] I've never seen it

[00:38:43] Oh I think it's okay

[00:38:45] Number three is

[00:38:46] We have to start rushing through this

[00:38:48] It's a dumb teen comedy

[00:38:49] With Colin Firth in it

[00:38:50] It's the dad

[00:38:51] What a girl wants

[00:38:53] You talked about it on this podcast before

[00:38:55] I think so

[00:38:56] Number four is a movie you just mentioned

[00:38:58] So I couldn't believe it

[00:38:59] I didn't even notice it in there

[00:39:00] Huge hit

[00:39:01] No 100s comedy

[00:39:02] Number five is the big

[00:39:05] A big play for stardom

[00:39:07] From an actor who eventually found it

[00:39:09] And had already found it

[00:39:10] But was like

[00:39:11] Ah

[00:39:12] It's an action movie

[00:39:13] Like a kind of a grim, gritty

[00:39:16] R rated action movie

[00:39:18] Starring a guy who had been in some hits

[00:39:21] And I feel like he was trying to make a play

[00:39:23] To sort of like just have

[00:39:24] Are you a leading man or what?

[00:39:25] Just have a couple big action movies every year

[00:39:27] And this is the start of him's super decline

[00:39:30] Which he then bounces back from

[00:39:31] And now he's one of the biggest stars in Hollywood

[00:39:33] Again

[00:39:34] Well not Tony Jr

[00:39:35] No

[00:39:36] He's one of the biggest stars in Hollywood

[00:39:38] Again?

[00:39:39] Yeah

[00:39:40] I don't know

[00:39:41] This is tough

[00:39:42] It is

[00:39:43] It's hard to

[00:39:44] It's not an interesting movie

[00:39:45] It's a cruise?

[00:39:46] No

[00:39:47] No

[00:39:48] He really was like

[00:39:49] Big young star

[00:39:51] Youngish

[00:39:52] Bottoms out

[00:39:53] Comes back

[00:39:54] And then he's huge again

[00:39:55] He's in a movie in January

[00:39:57] This coming January

[00:39:58] That looks so incredibly bad

[00:39:59] And I just watched the trailer for it

[00:40:01] A big action movie

[00:40:02] That's a revival of another of his franchises

[00:40:04] Oh oh oh oh

[00:40:06] Oh

[00:40:07] Okay alright

[00:40:08] Don't yell

[00:40:09] It's my boy Vinny D

[00:40:10] But do you know what the movie is?

[00:40:11] 2003 A Man of Part

[00:40:12] Correct

[00:40:13] Nailed it

[00:40:14] Nailed it

[00:40:15] It's my boy Vinny D

[00:40:16] Not a good movie

[00:40:17] What do you say about that movie?

[00:40:18] Nothing

[00:40:19] Yeah, no you nailed it

[00:40:20] There's no better way to explain that movie

[00:40:21] F. Gary Gray

[00:40:22] Is that an F. Gary Gray picture?

[00:40:23] Director of F8

[00:40:24] And FF8

[00:40:25] That's why I'm calling it F8

[00:40:27] I'm calling it F8

[00:40:28] I'm hoping that's what they call it

[00:40:29] Okay

[00:40:30] Aliens of the Deep

[00:40:31] 2005

[00:40:32] The superior film

[00:40:33] Yeah

[00:40:34] Co-directed by Cameron and Quail

[00:40:37] Steve Quail

[00:40:38] Steven Quail

[00:40:39] Okay

[00:40:40] Who also directed Final Destination 5

[00:40:43] Oh

[00:40:44] And Into the Storm

[00:40:45] Okay so he's a 3D guy

[00:40:46] And is now directing The Lake

[00:40:48] Oh

[00:40:49] Which is an upcoming film starring

[00:40:52] J.K. Simmons

[00:40:53] Cool

[00:40:54] In which the Navy SEALs find something

[00:40:56] In a lake

[00:40:57] Oh cool

[00:41:00] That's literally the plot

[00:41:01] I think this movie looks a lot better

[00:41:04] I think Cameron has figured out how to make it look more cinematic

[00:41:07] I'm sure this movie looked terrific in 3D

[00:41:11] I was saying to Griffin off-mic and I'm going to say it on mic

[00:41:14] This is a film that feels like him playing around with Avatar

[00:41:18] Yes

[00:41:19] Tech

[00:41:20] Like this is a straight line from this movie to Avatar

[00:41:22] Very much

[00:41:23] But even Ghosts of the Abyss feels like a great movie

[00:41:25] Ghosts of the Abyss feels to me like

[00:41:27] Okay let's turn the camera on, see what we got

[00:41:29] And it feels half like a Titanic knockoff

[00:41:33] Right

[00:41:34] Like them cashing in on that

[00:41:35] This one I think he's figured out how to make the images pop a little more

[00:41:38] Even in a flat 2D form you can see

[00:41:41] You know James Cameron loves his blue

[00:41:42] It looks good

[00:41:43] I'm with you

[00:41:44] He loves his blue

[00:41:45] All his movies have like a lot of blue tints and blue sheens and shit

[00:41:47] And this he's got these blue lights inside the submersibles

[00:41:50] So when the people are inside the bubble capsules

[00:41:53] They look good

[00:41:55] That's what I was talking about when I was asking you about

[00:41:57] They're big bubbles

[00:41:58] Yes

[00:41:59] The cool bubble shit

[00:42:00] Yeah the cool bubbles

[00:42:01] That they like invented basically

[00:42:02] Right, but so he's got these big bubble windows so that way

[00:42:04] Like whereas in Ghosts of the Abyss if you have a shot of

[00:42:07] Bill Paxton inside the submersible it's just him in like a fucking fluorescent lit

[00:42:12] Sure

[00:42:13] Little sub and you can't see what he's looking at

[00:42:15] In this you get to see the background around them as they're looking

[00:42:19] Because they're in these sort of 360 dome

[00:42:21] Although they still have the more classic submersible things

[00:42:25] That can go way deeper

[00:42:26] But even that when the shots of them looking out through the portholes

[00:42:30] Are I think nice images

[00:42:32] Yeah it's fine

[00:42:33] They're well lit

[00:42:34] I mean he lit these ships well

[00:42:35] Looks good, what's the movie about?

[00:42:37] Cool shit

[00:42:38] It's about the ocean

[00:42:39] No, no, no it's not just about that

[00:42:41] They think that maybe

[00:42:42] I want it to be about that

[00:42:43] They think if they go to the bottom of the ocean

[00:42:45] Figure out how life is able to live without sunlight

[00:42:48] That they might understand how life could exist on another planet

[00:42:51] Uh-huh

[00:42:52] That's what the movie is about

[00:42:53] So they send a bunch of people down there

[00:42:55] Marine experts, space experts

[00:42:58] I think they got a good team

[00:43:00] I like that it's sort of camera back in like a grunts mode

[00:43:03] Where it's like here are a bunch of hard working people doing their job

[00:43:05] Yeah

[00:43:06] It's a lot of women which is really cool

[00:43:07] Definitely

[00:43:08] A lot of scientists we got a sort of like big ensemble cast

[00:43:10] Sure

[00:43:11] And they're all going down there looking for different things

[00:43:13] That can help them piece together this puzzle of how aliens could exist

[00:43:16] That is a stretch in terms of the movie communicating that

[00:43:20] I think the movie communicates that very well

[00:43:22] The movie is like it just bounces from thing to thing every ten minutes

[00:43:26] The shit looks cool

[00:43:27] No, I want a movie where about people going down to the bottom of the ocean

[00:43:31] They see weird fishies

[00:43:32] Yeah

[00:43:33] And I learn what the weird fishies are the end

[00:43:35] I think this movie does that

[00:43:36] No, it starts doing that and then they're like you know what's interesting is the aliens and the space

[00:43:40] Let's talk about that for a while

[00:43:41] Yeah, aliens and space are cool

[00:43:42] And what else is interesting is the tech

[00:43:43] No, no, no, I want like a David Attenborough documentary

[00:43:46] I just want like a planet earthy thing that's about what the cool little fishies do

[00:43:51] Down at the bottom of the ocean

[00:43:53] I wholeheartedly disagree David

[00:43:55] David here's a big difference

[00:43:56] Why?

[00:43:57] Because what they're doing is they're making the connection between deep sea diving

[00:44:00] Yeah

[00:44:01] And the world that exists deep below the fucking surface

[00:44:04] I know

[00:44:05] You know

[00:44:06] Hell's yeah

[00:44:07] And making that connection to exploring other planets

[00:44:10] They make that connection

[00:44:11] By saying it

[00:44:13] Right

[00:44:14] And then that's where they leave it

[00:44:15] But David here's a big difference

[00:44:17] Ben and I saw the 47 minute cut

[00:44:19] You saw the 90 minute cut

[00:44:20] I don't

[00:44:21] Not together, there's a funny time thing

[00:44:22] I can't imagine, I don't think mine was a 90 minute cut

[00:44:24] I just think it was over an hour

[00:44:26] I don't remember

[00:44:27] What I watched was literally 47 minutes long

[00:44:28] And it felt pretty lean and focused on the thing that I want to see

[00:44:31] Maybe I saw some longer thing

[00:44:32] There's no, this is possible

[00:44:34] Because there are longer cuts of both of the films I know

[00:44:36] Yeah

[00:44:37] Alright

[00:44:38] And we watched these shorter versions

[00:44:39] That felt pretty focused on that one theme to me

[00:44:42] Right Ben?

[00:44:43] Yeah

[00:44:44] I thought like just having the mention of Europa was so cool

[00:44:48] As somebody who likes science fiction novels

[00:44:51] Listen to me

[00:44:52] That is like such a recurring

[00:44:55] I am so down with Jupiter's moons

[00:44:57] Excuse me, I love Jupiter's moons

[00:45:00] I want a Jupiter moon movie

[00:45:01] I've loved Jupiter's moons longer than you have dated

[00:45:05] No, that is not true

[00:45:06] Oh, do you want to challenge to Europa?

[00:45:09] You may be older than me

[00:45:10] So you may like technically just have

[00:45:12] Like more time on this earth to beat me with

[00:45:15] But I've been into that shit since I was a baby

[00:45:18] I was born out of Europa

[00:45:21] I was born on Io

[00:45:23] Yo Ben

[00:45:24] What's up

[00:45:25] Before we recorded when you were in the bathroom

[00:45:28] Yeah

[00:45:29] Loki, I heard David talking dirty about Jupiter's moons

[00:45:32] Get the fuck out of here

[00:45:33] He was like their fucking dumb eyes don't like them

[00:45:35] Better

[00:45:36] Yeah, he was talking fucking dirty

[00:45:37] Nothing better than

[00:45:38] When it got into Jupiter's moons

[00:45:40] That sounds like something David would do

[00:45:41] I was like

[00:45:42] I was very, I did enjoy the weird little

[00:45:44] 3D presentations of Jupiter's moons

[00:45:46] Where they're like, oh, here's the deal with gay and me

[00:45:48] Like ooh, and then here's the Io

[00:45:50] It's close to volcanoes, that's cool

[00:45:53] But I had lost the thread of

[00:45:55] What the point of this movie was

[00:45:57] Yo Ben

[00:45:58] What's up, Griffin

[00:45:59] You're talking to me man

[00:46:00] Yeah, no, actually David, can you just

[00:46:03] Not listen to this for a second

[00:46:05] Sorry, don't worry guys, I'm not listening

[00:46:07] We're gonna be over here

[00:46:08] Just talk

[00:46:09] Okay, let's just test quickly

[00:46:10] David are you listening to this

[00:46:11] Great, what's up with that

[00:46:12] Okay, cool

[00:46:13] What's up

[00:46:14] Loki

[00:46:15] Yeah

[00:46:16] But like Ben actually is Loki

[00:46:17] Yeah, what's up

[00:46:18] Loki, like

[00:46:19] Like Loki, got it, Misha

[00:46:21] Yeah, what's up

[00:46:22] Okay

[00:46:23] So like Tom Hiddleston though

[00:46:25] Hey, you guys still talking?

[00:46:26] Yeah, hold on one second

[00:46:27] Hold on one second

[00:46:28] We're gonna be with you one sec

[00:46:29] I'm not listening, I was just checking

[00:46:30] Okay, so before we recorded

[00:46:31] What's up

[00:46:32] I was like Europa though

[00:46:34] Right

[00:46:35] And David was like

[00:46:36] No

[00:46:37] I'd make a stinky fart on that

[00:46:39] I mean

[00:46:40] I swear to God, David was like

[00:46:41] I'm not surprised at all

[00:46:43] He sounds like

[00:46:44] He's like trying to play up

[00:46:45] Like how much he likes Europa

[00:46:46] But he's a secretly a hater

[00:46:48] I know and then he was like

[00:46:49] I was like Ayo though

[00:46:51] And he was like

[00:46:52] I know though

[00:46:55] Damn

[00:46:57] Too much man

[00:46:58] Alright well you know what

[00:46:59] I'm glad we had this talk

[00:47:00] Yeah

[00:47:01] Because I feel like this has really shaped my sort of like understanding of where David's coming from

[00:47:06] And I know you're repping Europa heart

[00:47:08] Like no one shows more respect to Europa than you

[00:47:11] You know I have that Europa necklace

[00:47:13] I do know that

[00:47:14] Yeah and I wear it close to my heart

[00:47:15] Yeah

[00:47:16] Every day

[00:47:17] Yeah

[00:47:18] And then you

[00:47:19] Bill Paxton's looking for it

[00:47:20] He's searching down the bottom of the ocean

[00:47:21] Looking for your Europa necklace

[00:47:22] You got it the whole time

[00:47:23] It's been here the whole time

[00:47:25] Deep in your heart

[00:47:27] Okay let's give it a hug

[00:47:29] Hey David, what's up

[00:47:30] Sorry

[00:47:31] So you were saying how much you like Europa

[00:47:32] Yeah

[00:47:33] Go on David

[00:47:34] They walk back in the room

[00:47:35] Okay

[00:47:36] Alright

[00:47:37] Interesting

[00:47:38] Alien's Deep is okay

[00:47:39] I bet I would have liked it a lot more

[00:47:42] Yeah

[00:47:43] Whereas Ghost of the Abyss

[00:47:44] Played pretty good on the

[00:47:46] Okay here's what I like

[00:47:47] Here's what I prefer about Aliens of

[00:47:49] Of the Deep

[00:47:50] Okay

[00:47:51] One

[00:47:52] James Cameron still doesn't want to make himself the center of the narrative

[00:47:54] But he does a good job

[00:47:56] Introducing a lot of different characters

[00:47:58] With real palpable enthusiasm

[00:48:00] He gets a lot of really young excited scientists

[00:48:03] Who have not seen anything like this before

[00:48:05] And I think their enthusiasm

[00:48:06] Translates on screen

[00:48:08] Okay

[00:48:09] Two

[00:48:10] I love the main woman who's the marine biologist

[00:48:12] She's great

[00:48:13] Cool

[00:48:14] I don't remember a lot of the other scientists right

[00:48:15] Dijana Figaroa

[00:48:16] Yeah

[00:48:17] I like that conversation where

[00:48:19] James Cameron is like sitting at the table with them

[00:48:21] And he's like

[00:48:22] Would you all go to Mars

[00:48:23] Like

[00:48:24] And they all like raise their hands

[00:48:25] And then he's like

[00:48:26] You know

[00:48:27] You might have to say goodbye to your families for years

[00:48:29] Like what do you think about that

[00:48:30] And she's like

[00:48:31] Huh

[00:48:32] I didn't think about that

[00:48:33] But I put my hand up so I guess I don't care

[00:48:35] And like

[00:48:36] Ghost of the Abyss

[00:48:37] Kindred spirit here right

[00:48:38] Like that's what Cameron's identifying

[00:48:39] Yeah

[00:48:40] Ghost of the Abyss is like Rich Man goes on vacation

[00:48:42] Like Aliens of the Deep is him being like

[00:48:44] I want to give this next generation of scientists

[00:48:47] An opportunity

[00:48:49] Like I'm getting Disney to pay to send all these guys down

[00:48:52] You know

[00:48:53] These guys and gals down to the bottom of the ocean

[00:48:55] See some cool shit

[00:48:56] That they can use to support their theories that they're working on

[00:48:59] Right

[00:49:00] And they're down there and they're seeing like underwater lava

[00:49:03] Love that trench stuff

[00:49:05] The trench stuff is cool

[00:49:06] Put it down with some more trench stuff

[00:49:07] The black smoke

[00:49:08] The black smoke like lost

[00:49:09] Wow

[00:49:10] And I love those

[00:49:11] There's animals that don't eat

[00:49:13] They just absorb light and chemicals and shit

[00:49:17] That's amazing

[00:49:18] James Cameron threw on some shade on some fish

[00:49:20] He's like that's the ugliest fish I've ever seen

[00:49:22] The lips

[00:49:23] The lip, the weird lippy tube things

[00:49:25] With like the lips

[00:49:26] Here's what I want

[00:49:27] All that

[00:49:28] There's more digressions

[00:49:30] There's more tech stuff

[00:49:31] There's that whole sequence at the beginning

[00:49:33] Where they're like

[00:49:34] We've got this A-frame for putting the

[00:49:36] Subs in the water

[00:49:37] And then the A-frame breaks

[00:49:38] And James Cameron's real mad

[00:49:40] And his arms are a Kimbo

[00:49:41] And he's like we gotta fix the A-frame

[00:49:42] And I'm like

[00:49:43] I don't care about the A-frame

[00:49:44] I care about the A-frame

[00:49:45] I don't care about the A-frame

[00:49:46] I like when they do like zoom outs

[00:49:48] Graphic zoom outs

[00:49:49] Where it's like

[00:49:50] They pull out

[00:49:51] And you're in space now and shit

[00:49:52] Yeah

[00:49:53] That's fucking cool

[00:49:54] Space rule

[00:49:55] You guys are selling listeners on this movie

[00:49:57] And so listeners I apologize when you

[00:49:59] If you rent this movie and watch it

[00:50:01] And you think it's kind of a disjointed mess

[00:50:03] Nah you love it

[00:50:04] Cause it gets some cool shit

[00:50:05] There's like a fucking

[00:50:06] I wanted more cool shit

[00:50:07] There's a fish that looks like a goddamn tissue

[00:50:09] There's ten minutes on the

[00:50:10] No, that stuff's good

[00:50:11] That's what I'm saying

[00:50:12] But then there's ten minutes on the bubblecraft

[00:50:14] And how the bubblecraft works

[00:50:15] I don't care

[00:50:16] No, bubblecraft looks cool

[00:50:17] It looks cool

[00:50:18] I see it

[00:50:19] That's all I need to know

[00:50:20] I disagree

[00:50:21] You can tell me it's new

[00:50:22] And I'll be like

[00:50:23] Great

[00:50:24] It's very new

[00:50:25] Yeah, great

[00:50:26] And then I'll be like

[00:50:27] What does it go down and look at though

[00:50:28] Please now

[00:50:29] But there's something

[00:50:31] One other element I need to throw into the dish

[00:50:33] And maybe it functions as a spoiler

[00:50:35] But I got to

[00:50:36] It's a spoiler that is

[00:50:37] Never acknowledged in the film

[00:50:38] But I gotta talk about this

[00:50:40] Uh huh

[00:50:41] I like

[00:50:42] Aliens of the Deep Moor

[00:50:43] Because it has

[00:50:44] A real emotional undercurrent

[00:50:46] It's about trauma

[00:50:48] And loss

[00:50:50] And how people try to move on from those things

[00:50:52] You know

[00:50:53] Okay

[00:50:54] These failures

[00:50:55] That

[00:50:56] Are unspoken

[00:50:58] But people carry with them in their body language

[00:51:00] And their actions

[00:51:02] Because in this film

[00:51:04] Waitin'

[00:51:05] We have Jake, but we don't have Elwood

[00:51:07] It's true

[00:51:08] Jake is all up in this movie

[00:51:09] Elwood's not in it all

[00:51:10] And they never explain what happened to Elwood

[00:51:12] So you think Elwood

[00:51:13] May bit the dust?

[00:51:14] I think he might have hit the ceiling again

[00:51:16] I think he might have got stuck on that Titanic

[00:51:18] Ceiling and never come by

[00:51:19] Which one was Akroy's character?

[00:51:20] Elwood

[00:51:22] It's weird, it's a reversal

[00:51:23] It's a reversal

[00:51:24] Hey

[00:51:25] Hey, uh guys

[00:51:26] Quick

[00:51:27] Tangent

[00:51:28] I have to step out to a meeting

[00:51:31] Uh, so I'm gonna have somebody like finish out

[00:51:33] But can I just do my final thoughts

[00:51:34] And we'll cut this out

[00:51:35] This is the most exciting episode

[00:51:37] Keep it in baby

[00:51:38] Okay

[00:51:39] That man is leaving the episode

[00:51:41] I have to go

[00:51:42] I mean, it's time to stop

[00:51:43] Yeah, I have to go

[00:51:44] Okay

[00:51:45] Alright, so I'll just say this final thoughts

[00:51:47] Yeah

[00:51:48] Rich guys, fly planes, James Cameron

[00:51:50] Goes to the deep ocean

[00:51:52] That's cool man

[00:51:53] I like that

[00:51:54] Oh, yeah

[00:51:56] I like Europa

[00:51:57] I rep it hard

[00:51:58] I will always rep it hard

[00:51:59] I rep Europa hard too

[00:52:00] David

[00:52:01] Yeah, right

[00:52:02] Yeah

[00:52:03] I do

[00:52:04] I love it

[00:52:05] Big ice planet

[00:52:06] Okay, I love you Ben

[00:52:07] Big skating rink

[00:52:08] I'll see you on Friday

[00:52:09] Yeah, I'll see you Friday

[00:52:10] I'll talk about a real movie

[00:52:11] Cool

[00:52:12] Alright

[00:52:13] I think we're done talking about aliens in the deep right?

[00:52:15] David, now that Ben's gone

[00:52:16] I gotta tell you something

[00:52:17] Uh huh, what happened?

[00:52:18] Ben fucking hates Europa

[00:52:20] Shit, I knew it

[00:52:21] I knew he was

[00:52:22] You could tell he never even heard of it

[00:52:23] He's playing his hand way too hard

[00:52:25] Exactly, Doth pretests too much

[00:52:26] Yeah, it's the least crispy acting I've ever seen

[00:52:28] Yeah

[00:52:29] He's soggy

[00:52:30] Not crispy enough

[00:52:31] He's soggy like it's the bottom of the fucking ocean

[00:52:33] Can't wait for him to hear this

[00:52:34] I wanna wait for him to own him

[00:52:35] Oh dude, I got Europa necklace

[00:52:36] Oh, you know I love Europa

[00:52:38] Come on man

[00:52:40] You wanna play the box office game for aliens in the deep?

[00:52:42] Yeah, let's do it

[00:52:43] I just can't believe what a fucking phony Ben is

[00:52:45] Ben's a phony and a liar

[00:52:47] He is, he's a phony and a liar

[00:52:49] I know you love Europa

[00:52:51] January 28th, 2005

[00:52:55] Okay

[00:52:56] Aliens of Deep opens number 22 at the box office

[00:52:59] January 2005

[00:53:00] Okay

[00:53:01] With $479,000

[00:53:03] Not great

[00:53:04] Opening weekend

[00:53:05] The movie eventually makes $9 million

[00:53:08] Better than Worldwide

[00:53:09] Okay, okay

[00:53:11] Number one is a horror movie

[00:53:14] Starring an actor, a prestigious actor we recently

[00:53:17] We just mentioned

[00:53:18] And a little girl

[00:53:20] It's a creepy little girl movie

[00:53:22] The film is titled hide and seek

[00:53:23] It stars Robert De Niro and Dakota Fanning

[00:53:26] That's a good pull

[00:53:27] I want a little more recognition for

[00:53:28] Pretty impressive pull

[00:53:29] Right

[00:53:30] I don't know that I could have remembered that movie

[00:53:33] Off the top of my head

[00:53:34] I could have remembered maybe like

[00:53:35] Oh yeah, Robert De Niro and Dakota Fanning

[00:53:37] I don't know if I could have remembered the title

[00:53:39] I don't want a trophy but I got that without hesitation

[00:53:41] Melissa Leo is in that movie

[00:53:43] Uh-huh

[00:53:44] Famka Jensen is in that movie

[00:53:46] I think that movie is creepy little girl

[00:53:48] They have her meet with the therapist

[00:53:50] Because she's talking creepy

[00:53:51] And they're like she might be going crazy

[00:53:53] And he's trying to talk her out of her craziness

[00:53:55] And then turns out that he's the creepy thing

[00:53:57] The whole time

[00:53:58] I think the twist is that he's the creep

[00:54:00] I think you're

[00:54:02] I remember someone explaining the plot of that movie to me

[00:54:04] And it was dumb

[00:54:06] The film has a total of five different endings

[00:54:09] Fuck that, okay

[00:54:10] Number two at the box office

[00:54:11] And at the DVD you can watch all five

[00:54:13] Fuck that, number two at the box office

[00:54:15] But just want to say also

[00:54:16] It was from the director of Swimfan

[00:54:18] Oh fuck that, number two at the box office

[00:54:20] Made $51 million, alright

[00:54:21] Uh, in 122 worldwide

[00:54:23] Jesus Christ

[00:54:24] Not bad

[00:54:25] Number two is a comedy

[00:54:27] Starring an actor you love

[00:54:29] And we're just repping to me off Mike

[00:54:32] Uh, made 82 mil world

[00:54:34] Uh, total, 97 worldwide

[00:54:36] Uh, a family comedy

[00:54:39] Uh, it does well

[00:54:41] It's a hit

[00:54:42] It was turned into a TV show later

[00:54:44] The family c- oh, oh yeah

[00:54:46] America put a couple cubes in the glass

[00:54:48] They did

[00:54:49] It's uh

[00:54:50] Well just one

[00:54:51] One big cube

[00:54:52] There was a sequel

[00:54:53] Oh, okay

[00:54:54] This was all are we there yet

[00:54:56] With this film they put one cube

[00:54:57] This was are we there yet

[00:54:58] And then it was followed by are we done yet

[00:54:59] And then are we there yet

[00:55:00] The series starring Terry Crews

[00:55:01] Correct

[00:55:02] Are we there yet

[00:55:03] That was a really big hit

[00:55:04] Yeah, totally a big hit

[00:55:06] Um, road trip movie kind of a

[00:55:09] Bachelor has to get used to family life

[00:55:11] Movie I guess right

[00:55:12] He's dating a woman who has two kids

[00:55:14] He needs to drive them over

[00:55:16] I believe so

[00:55:17] He gets, he gets thrown in the deep end

[00:55:20] They throw the cube in the deep end

[00:55:21] He's gotta get to love those kids

[00:55:23] In the backseat of a car

[00:55:24] And they keep on asking

[00:55:25] Are we there yet

[00:55:26] It's from Brian Levant

[00:55:28] The director of the Flintstones

[00:55:29] Jingle All the Way

[00:55:30] Which people love that Flintstones talk last week

[00:55:32] I was very surprised

[00:55:33] That popped, that popped

[00:55:34] Number three at the box office

[00:55:36] After expanding growing by 1800 screens

[00:55:40] Oh interesting

[00:55:41] Interlimited release

[00:55:42] Okay so this is an end of year 2004 film

[00:55:44] Probably an Oscar play that's now going wide

[00:55:46] A major Oscar player of that season

[00:55:48] Million Dollar Baby

[00:55:49] Correct

[00:55:50] Million Dollar Baby

[00:55:52] A grim boxing movie that made

[00:55:54] $100 million at the domestic box office

[00:55:56] As they always do

[00:55:57] 216 worldwide

[00:55:58] As they always do

[00:55:59] Huge hit good movie

[00:56:01] If reductive at times

[00:56:03] It's a good film

[00:56:04] Number four is a film that is a comedy

[00:56:08] That I don't like

[00:56:10] And it's the second in a series of family-ish comedies

[00:56:14] PG-13

[00:56:15] Big Mama's House too

[00:56:16] No

[00:56:17] No

[00:56:18] It's already made 258 million dollars

[00:56:22] Jesus Christ

[00:56:23] It is

[00:56:24] And it would make 516 worldwide

[00:56:26] Yeah Jesus Christ

[00:56:27] I know exactly what movie it is

[00:56:28] It was one of the biggest hits of the holiday season 2004

[00:56:32] It is Beat the Fockers

[00:56:33] Correct

[00:56:34] That's a shitty movie

[00:56:35] Barbra Streisand

[00:56:36] It's the one where there's another Daniro movie

[00:56:38] A lot of Daniro with the fake boob

[00:56:41] That he uses to feed the baby

[00:56:42] Yeah you know what's another thing

[00:56:44] You know the comedy like

[00:56:46] If it bends it's funny if it breaks it isn't

[00:56:48] You know

[00:56:49] Sure

[00:56:50] The reality of that movie is the first movie

[00:56:51] He's ex-CIA

[00:56:52] But they treat CIA as a real world job as it is

[00:56:55] Yeah right

[00:56:56] He was like an analyst and like an interviewer for the CIA

[00:56:59] Right

[00:57:00] And the craziest it gets is the lie detector test

[00:57:02] Which is technology that anyone could buy

[00:57:03] Sure

[00:57:04] In the second movie he has an RV

[00:57:06] And at one point he's suspicious of Ben Stiller's character

[00:57:08] So he hits a button and the RV turns into a DNA lab

[00:57:11] Yeah

[00:57:12] I forgot about that

[00:57:13] That movie fucking sucks

[00:57:14] Well that movie is kind of like the first meet the parents

[00:57:18] They're both kind of about weird like Jew vs. Wasp panic

[00:57:22] But then it gets insane

[00:57:23] That movie heightens to like his fucking

[00:57:26] Like dried up foreskin lands in their salad

[00:57:29] And they think it's a walnut and they eat it or some shit

[00:57:31] It fucking blows

[00:57:32] It's all that stuff but also there's like

[00:57:34] It's the weird like feminization

[00:57:38] Like that like Denier always disapproves of

[00:57:41] You know it's like the joke in the first movie is like

[00:57:43] He's a male nurse

[00:57:45] Like his name is Gaylord

[00:57:48] It doesn't track

[00:57:50] It's not funny

[00:57:52] No the first one doesn't hold up very well

[00:57:55] I think it's fine

[00:57:56] The second one is a disaster

[00:57:57] The third one I've never seen

[00:57:59] I have also never seen the little fuckers

[00:58:01] The thing I like about Kevin Hart movies

[00:58:03] Is that Kevin Hart movies are kind of playing off

[00:58:05] That same dynamic where it's like

[00:58:06] Oh he's the feminine, the sensitive, the vulnerable guy

[00:58:09] And everyone else is like challenging his bona fides

[00:58:11] But Kevin Hart owns his fucking shit

[00:58:13] He's like yeah I love fucking flowers

[00:58:15] Don't fuck with me

[00:58:17] And they don't make it a joke

[00:58:18] I like Kevin Hart's comedic persona

[00:58:20] In motion pictures

[00:58:22] Because I'm a sensitive guy

[00:58:24] And I want to own it

[00:58:25] I think it's okay

[00:58:26] I think Kevin Hart walks this line a little

[00:58:28] Something

[00:58:29] I don't think he's made a great movie yet

[00:58:31] But I like the persona and I'm hoping one of these days

[00:58:33] Are gonna place it in a good film

[00:58:35] I'm a little sick of the persona

[00:58:37] I'm pretty sick of the persona

[00:58:38] Number five is an inspirational sports movie

[00:58:41] Starting a great

[00:58:44] Miracle

[00:58:45] Actor, nope

[00:58:46] That I love

[00:58:48] The basketball movie

[00:58:50] Glory Road

[00:58:51] Nope, there's a lot of these

[00:58:53] Okay, it's a Disney film though right

[00:58:55] It's a Disney inspirational sports movie

[00:58:57] Or is it not

[00:58:58] I don't know

[00:59:00] I don't think so

[00:59:01] Oh okay, coach Carter

[00:59:03] Yeah okay, so it's not Disney

[00:59:05] Sam Jackson

[00:59:06] Yeah

[00:59:07] Film debut of Chang Tatum I believe

[00:59:09] Is that right

[00:59:10] I think that's his first picture

[00:59:11] Directed, strangely enough

[00:59:13] My guy named Carter

[00:59:14] Thomas Carter

[00:59:15] Yeah

[00:59:16] Who's mostly a TV director

[00:59:18] Solid movie, 67 mil

[00:59:20] That's your January 05

[00:59:23] You know that's a good Mishmash horror

[00:59:25] Oscar leftovers

[00:59:27] You know Christmas comedy leftovers

[00:59:29] And like sort of inspirational sports movie

[00:59:31] That's like a lot of what you get in January

[00:59:33] And this is a lot of what you get on this episode

[00:59:36] Where we talk about documentaries that you haven't seen

[00:59:38] Don't really care about

[00:59:40] But boy, what a fight we had about

[00:59:42] Aliens of the Deep vs. Ghost of the Abyss

[00:59:44] Wasn't that exciting

[00:59:45] Didn't that justify you taking the time to listen to this

[00:59:47] Edge of your seat

[00:59:49] Thrilling, thrilling episode

[00:59:51] I can't wait for all of you to get to Reddit

[00:59:53] And debate this one

[00:59:54] It's gonna be a real knock down drag out fight

[00:59:56] Across the blankies

[00:59:57] They're gonna be divided like the Civil War

[00:59:59] Everyone is loving it

[01:00:01] I expect seven separate pod mass write ups

[01:00:05] They're gonna keep on every week going

[01:00:07] I know we talked about this episode last week

[01:00:09] But there's a little more

[01:00:10] We gotta go back down another dive

[01:00:12] To find out what was really going on

[01:00:14] In this episode

[01:00:16] Next week we talk about Avatar

[01:00:18] Yeah, that was a funny little movie

[01:00:21] The most successful movie of all time

[01:00:23] Still to this day worldwide

[01:00:25] The highest grossing film in history

[01:00:27] I think that might get more listens

[01:00:30] Than this episode

[01:00:32] Thank you all for listening

[01:00:34] Please remember to rate, review

[01:00:37] And subscribe

[01:00:39] Oh, I have a little plug

[01:00:41] By the time this episode is coming out

[01:00:43] I think middle November

[01:00:46] I'm on a TV show called Search Party

[01:00:49] That I believe is all premiering

[01:00:51] The week of Thanksgiving

[01:00:53] TBS is doing some sort of funky thing

[01:00:55] Where they're premiering the show

[01:00:58] I think as like a marathon

[01:01:00] On Thanksgiving Day

[01:01:01] And then they're later gonna release episode

[01:01:03] I don't know

[01:01:04] TBS is weird with their college

[01:01:06] They're trying to mix up the distribution system

[01:01:08] The release schedule for TV shows

[01:01:10] And what happens is like

[01:01:12] Keep your eyes open

[01:01:13] The show will be available in some form

[01:01:15] And some schedule I don't totally understand

[01:01:17] The week of Thanksgiving

[01:01:18] I have a little arc

[01:01:19] I have one episode that's a really

[01:01:22] Juicy part

[01:01:24] My friends Charles Rogers

[01:01:26] And Sarah Violet-Bless

[01:01:27] Who directed the motion picture for Tilden

[01:01:30] It's their TV series

[01:01:32] It stars Ali Ashaka

[01:01:34] And John Rylons and John Early

[01:01:36] And a lot of really funny people

[01:01:38] Who's afraid of Gavin Rolfe

[01:01:40] That's like a weird bottle episode

[01:01:42] Dinner party where I play

[01:01:43] Like the worst dinner party guest of all time

[01:01:45] I think it's really good

[01:01:46] I'm really proud of it

[01:01:47] It's some of my favorite work

[01:01:48] I've ever got to do

[01:01:49] I think it's a good show

[01:01:50] I just think people should watch it

[01:01:51] I never plugged shit on here

[01:01:52] But I actually like this a lot

[01:01:53] You did it

[01:01:54] I did it

[01:01:55] Plugged

[01:01:56] Damn plugged

[01:01:57] No more leaks

[01:01:58] It was safe to go underwater

[01:02:00] With the pressure

[01:02:01] But don't drop that battery

[01:02:03] Because it will cost you $250,000

[01:02:06] $10

[01:02:07] What are the robots called again?

[01:02:09] I already forgot

[01:02:10] Jake and Elwood

[01:02:11] Jake and Elwood

[01:02:12] RIP Elwood

[01:02:13] Yeah, RIP Elwood

[01:02:14] Avatar next week guys

[01:02:16] Avatar next week

[01:02:17] Listen, we're going to be back baby

[01:02:19] Full force

[01:02:20] This wasn't even fun

[01:02:21] Like Barry's Secret of M. Night Shyamalan

[01:02:23] We didn't get crazy

[01:02:24] So weird

[01:02:25] That it's fun

[01:02:26] It's okay

[01:02:27] Yeah, because we've liked

[01:02:29] The James Cameron movies up until now

[01:02:31] So we're not at the point where

[01:02:32] We're so punchy that we're like

[01:02:33] Losing it

[01:02:34] We're just kind of bored

[01:02:35] Yeah, exactly

[01:02:36] We're just

[01:02:38] Okay

[01:02:39] Alright

[01:02:40] Okay

[01:02:41] Thank you all for listening

[01:02:42] No burger report

[01:02:43] No

[01:02:44] But feel free to write them

[01:02:46] Whatever

[01:02:47] Merchandise spotlight

[01:02:48] Yeah

[01:02:50] And as no orange to a smile

[01:02:52] No Ben's poetry corner

[01:02:53] No on the record

[01:02:54] No on the record

[01:02:55] Ben's new segment

[01:02:57] And as always

[01:03:00] I'm actually in the down low

[01:03:02] I fucking hate you real bad

[01:03:04] Twist

[01:03:05] Cuck
