Aliens with Fran Hoepfner

Fran Hoepfner (ClickHole) joins Griffin and David to discuss the 1986 horror/sci-fi sequel Aliens. But how did James go about pitching this project to studio executives? What exactly is Paul Reiser mad about? Could Private Vasquez be anymore of a badass? Together they share their thoughts on Cameron’s masterful storytelling, Sigourney Weaver’s outstanding performance, milk blood, pleasant adult flirting and more!

[00:00:01] Blank Check with Griffin and David, Blank Check with Griffin and David

[00:00:10] What to say though to experts, all you need to know is that the name of the show is Blank Check

[00:00:20] We'd better get back, cause it'll be dark soon

[00:00:24] And they mostly podcast at night

[00:00:26] Mostly

[00:00:28] It's good

[00:00:29] Thank you

[00:00:30] Assomber starts to an exciting episode of Blank Check with Griffin and David

[00:00:37] Just right at the top, let's not do that

[00:00:40] Blank Check, what if we got Don Pardo to announce our podcast?

[00:00:43] He's dead

[00:00:44] Don Pardo Jr

[00:00:45] Sure, let's get him

[00:00:46] What if Don Pardo Jr sounded like Blank Check with Griffin and David

[00:00:51] He is light-scan with Jackson, it turns out he's Don Pardo Jr

[00:00:54] Hey please, don't speak ill of our future guests

[00:00:57] What guest else you get?

[00:00:58] We're still negotiating over it

[00:01:00] Griffin tried to sell me on having him on the podcast

[00:01:02] We're negotiating over it

[00:01:03] Yeah, it was a negotiation, that's one way to put it

[00:01:07] Who was negotiating over it?

[00:01:09] Griffin and David, hashtag the two friends

[00:01:10] I'm Griffin

[00:01:11] Hashtag the two friends, yeah, I'm David Sims

[00:01:12] This is a podcast called Blank Check

[00:01:14] We go through filmographies of directors

[00:01:17] Yup

[00:01:18] Who have big success early on

[00:01:19] Yup

[00:01:20] And then get a series of Blank checks

[00:01:22] I think we should crowdsource the description of our podcast

[00:01:24] I think we've nailed it

[00:01:25] Okay great

[00:01:26] And sometimes the checks bounce

[00:01:28] And sometimes they fucking clear

[00:01:30] They deposit

[00:01:31] Right, we do mini series

[00:01:32] Yup

[00:01:33] Main series we're on right now is called Pottinator, Colin, Judgment Cast

[00:01:35] This is the films of James Cameron

[00:01:37] And today we are talking about his third motion picture

[00:01:42] Third film

[00:01:43] From 1986

[00:01:44] Yup

[00:01:45] We're right now living in the 30th anniversary

[00:01:47] The year of my birth

[00:01:48] Really?

[00:01:49] It's true

[00:01:50] Well

[00:01:51] This film I was

[00:01:52] I need to vet that a little more

[00:01:53] Do you have a lung form for certificate that I can look at?

[00:01:55] What? It's at home

[00:01:56] Long form?

[00:01:57] I don't fucking know Jesus Christ

[00:01:59] It's three months old

[00:02:00] I was three months old when this movie came out

[00:02:01] Did you see it in theaters?

[00:02:02] Yeah, of course

[00:02:03] Cool

[00:02:04] I was into the Terminator

[00:02:05] Movies called Aliens

[00:02:07] It's called Aliens

[00:02:08] And there's someone very special

[00:02:10] I want to introduce who's here

[00:02:12] For this episode it is

[00:02:13] My everything bagel to a super player

[00:02:15] Because shout out to the members

[00:02:18] Of the Blankies Reddit group

[00:02:20] There's a thread going on which is

[00:02:21] I'm about how they hate the show

[00:02:22] Which is your least favorite moment

[00:02:24] Yeah, it's the most popular thread in our new subreddit

[00:02:26] That we just discovered

[00:02:27] Blankies

[00:02:28] It's the hot thread

[00:02:29] Which is blown up

[00:02:30] Reddit's backslash blankies

[00:02:32] Reddit slash r slash blankies

[00:02:35] They're all r, aren't they?

[00:02:37] How does it work?

[00:02:38] No, you don't want to say

[00:02:39] I just always like to bring the guest in

[00:02:41] Before we introduce them

[00:02:42] It's always a good thing

[00:02:43] Yeah, but love people

[00:02:44] Meet our guest also at a bagel

[00:02:45] But not on mic

[00:02:47] Right, because I listen to what the fans say

[00:02:49] And I want to give them more of what they don't want

[00:02:51] And so I have a lovely everything bagel to a super player

[00:02:53] I don't like the look of this everything bagel

[00:02:55] I don't like everything bagels in general

[00:02:56] But I really don't like the ones that have oats on them

[00:02:58] You have a lot of oats, but...

[00:03:00] I had an everything bagel and I do like oats

[00:03:03] On the bagel or just in general?

[00:03:05] Cause I like oats in general

[00:03:06] Both

[00:03:07] What I'll sometimes do is I'll eat a bagel

[00:03:09] I'll make some oats and I'll pour the oats into my mouth

[00:03:11] While I'm drinking the bagel

[00:03:13] Alright, cut it out

[00:03:15] That was genuinely gross

[00:03:17] Not what you said, just the way you said it

[00:03:19] Oh, really cool

[00:03:20] We have a very exciting guest here today

[00:03:23] Yup, Flurin from Chicago

[00:03:25] We Flurin

[00:03:26] Yeah, on our dime

[00:03:27] On our dime

[00:03:28] I did not pay to come out here

[00:03:29] No, of course not

[00:03:30] No

[00:03:31] And you're staying at the plaza on our dime

[00:03:33] Yeah

[00:03:34] We said put it on our tab

[00:03:35] We said put it on our tab

[00:03:36] Put it on my tab

[00:03:38] And they said which tab?

[00:03:39] And we said the underhills

[00:03:41] Yeah, okay, we're doing the fletch now

[00:03:43] I'm trying to just load it all in

[00:03:44] I'm trying to do...

[00:03:45] Daniel in real life, fletch

[00:03:46] Yeah

[00:03:47] Introduce our guest

[00:03:48] She writes for clickhole

[00:03:51] Works at the onion ink

[00:03:52] Yeah

[00:03:53] Is it cool that your cheques say onion?

[00:03:54] I always used to like that when I worked with an onion

[00:03:56] Yeah, it is very funny

[00:03:57] The cheque that just says onion

[00:03:58] Yeah

[00:03:59] Now I'm hoping...

[00:04:00] I'm hoping I thread this needle

[00:04:01] Because I've never had to say your last name out loud

[00:04:03] Oh god, this is...

[00:04:04] Oh, this is gonna be bad

[00:04:05] I'm gonna fuck it up

[00:04:06] You certainly are, yeah

[00:04:09] Fran, I nailed that

[00:04:11] Whoa, whoa

[00:04:12] Her first name's Fran, I nailed that

[00:04:14] Yeah

[00:04:15] Hopfner

[00:04:16] That's really close

[00:04:17] Ooh, baby

[00:04:18] The P is silent, it's just Hopfner

[00:04:20] Okay

[00:04:21] Hopfner, yeah

[00:04:22] So I was like...

[00:04:23] I felt like one of the two was silent

[00:04:25] Yeah

[00:04:26] I went for saying both at the same time

[00:04:28] Because I thought it'd be less embarrassing

[00:04:31] than if I went Hopfner

[00:04:32] Yeah

[00:04:33] You know what I'm saying?

[00:04:34] Yeah, people usually mess up the vowel

[00:04:36] Yeah

[00:04:37] They do Hofner or they do Hefner

[00:04:39] No, see, I'm not basic

[00:04:40] I wouldn't do that

[00:04:41] I'll make mistakes

[00:04:42] But that's not good

[00:04:43] Fran Hopfner

[00:04:44] Fran Hopfner's here

[00:04:45] Hello

[00:04:46] I was flown in

[00:04:48] It's so nice

[00:04:49] First class?

[00:04:50] Yeah, first class

[00:04:51] And you had your choice of celebrity guest to fly with

[00:04:54] So we flew the celebrity guest to Chicago

[00:04:56] to sit next to you on the plane

[00:04:58] Yeah

[00:04:59] And that choice was...

[00:05:00] It was my boy Ansel Elgort

[00:05:02] Oh god

[00:05:03] No

[00:05:04] Don't make me...

[00:05:05] You set it up for me

[00:05:06] He's not on our podcast

[00:05:07] Whenever we fly a guest out

[00:05:09] We let them pick a seat mate

[00:05:11] But they're not gonna be on the show

[00:05:12] He just went home then

[00:05:13] Yeah

[00:05:14] No, he just stayed on

[00:05:16] I don't even think he's in New York right now

[00:05:18] Oh, old Ansel?

[00:05:19] Yeah, he's been in Rwanda

[00:05:21] Oh yeah, you posted an Instagram of him

[00:05:24] hanging out with a baby gorilla that I watched

[00:05:26] Yeah, it's really charming

[00:05:27] He's there for fun

[00:05:28] He's not...

[00:05:29] He's there with his family

[00:05:30] He's not lensing a new picture

[00:05:31] No

[00:05:32] He's just there

[00:05:33] When's he lensing a new scheme?

[00:05:35] I don't know

[00:05:36] Has he anchored any skeins recently

[00:05:38] in order to go on the safari?

[00:05:39] This is a trade podcast

[00:05:41] Yes

[00:05:42] This is a podcast about...

[00:05:45] Cinema

[00:05:46] Wow

[00:05:47] I was like, we're gonna discover it right now

[00:05:50] It's about cinema

[00:05:51] We've got Fran here

[00:05:52] Fran's a friend of mine

[00:05:53] She's a friend of yours

[00:05:54] We're just meeting now

[00:05:55] But I mean, certainly online Fran's

[00:05:57] I feel like

[00:05:58] Yeah

[00:05:59] Off to a fine start

[00:06:00] Yeah, that's good

[00:06:01] I haven't agreed on this so far

[00:06:02] Uh-huh

[00:06:03] And do you like movies?

[00:06:04] Yeah, love movies

[00:06:05] Do you like Jimmy C?

[00:06:06] How do you feel about Jimmy C?

[00:06:07] Cameron

[00:06:08] Um, fine

[00:06:09] I haven't seen a ton, to be honest

[00:06:11] Interesting

[00:06:12] But you've seen this one

[00:06:13] I've seen this...

[00:06:14] This might have been the one I've seen

[00:06:16] earliest and most

[00:06:17] Yeah

[00:06:18] Because I haven't seen, like, Titanic

[00:06:20] You should check it out

[00:06:21] I've seen the first and last

[00:06:22] 15 minutes of Titanic

[00:06:24] You know what, you should now check out

[00:06:25] the middle two hours

[00:06:26] 40 minutes, yeah

[00:06:27] Because here's the thing with Titanic

[00:06:29] It's very good

[00:06:30] Yeah

[00:06:31] That's the thing with Titanic

[00:06:32] It'll make you want to

[00:06:34] jump out of your seat

[00:06:35] and scream and cry

[00:06:36] Yeah

[00:06:37] And the thing you'll scream is

[00:06:38] I love the movie Titanic

[00:06:39] Yeah

[00:06:40] I probably love it

[00:06:41] I just, yeah, I never...

[00:06:42] No, you really would love it

[00:06:43] It's really the best

[00:06:44] I can't believe you've never seen Titanic

[00:06:45] I remember seeing it at a friend's house

[00:06:47] when it was in, like, its 2 VHS form

[00:06:49] Yeah

[00:06:50] I owned it in its 2 VHS form

[00:06:51] I remember, like, the hype

[00:06:52] The hype when it came out

[00:06:53] and I think I wasn't allowed to see it

[00:06:55] and then I just didn't ever see it

[00:06:57] And I wanted to go when it was

[00:06:58] released in theaters

[00:06:59] and that was another thing

[00:07:00] of just not getting around to it

[00:07:01] and I should have seen it then

[00:07:02] Yeah, you should have gone back to Titanic

[00:07:03] because the ads asked you to

[00:07:04] So I...

[00:07:05] I mean, we'll...

[00:07:06] We're gonna talk some Titanic

[00:07:07] I was gonna get into my history with Titanic

[00:07:09] but we'll talk to you later

[00:07:10] Yeah

[00:07:11] We'll have T-Time a couple episodes from now

[00:07:12] and we'll have T-2 Time

[00:07:13] a couple episodes from now

[00:07:14] But this time we're bringing our A game

[00:07:16] and that A game is alien

[00:07:18] It's not V-Abyss, it's aliens

[00:07:20] No, that's our T-A game

[00:07:21] Yeah, T-A game

[00:07:23] So I'm pointing out that all his movie titles

[00:07:25] are either T or A

[00:07:27] Yeah

[00:07:28] Other than Piranha

[00:07:29] Other than the Piranha which he didn't get to pick

[00:07:30] Right

[00:07:31] And he would have called it

[00:07:32] The

[00:07:33] Attack

[00:07:34] Right

[00:07:35] I don't know

[00:07:36] But you go...

[00:07:37] After Piranha you go

[00:07:38] T-T

[00:07:39] A

[00:07:40] T-A

[00:07:41] T-2

[00:07:42] G-D

[00:07:43] J-D but still, whatever

[00:07:44] Ugh

[00:07:45] No, no, whatever, go on, go on

[00:07:46] T-L

[00:07:47] T-L

[00:07:48] T-Yep

[00:07:49] And then A

[00:07:50] Yep, it's true

[00:07:51] I mean, I don't count ghosts of the abyss

[00:07:52] and aliens of the deep

[00:07:53] Aliens? A

[00:07:54] Yeah

[00:07:55] Um...

[00:07:57] Great

[00:07:58] This is one of my favorite movies

[00:07:59] It's a great movie

[00:08:00] Great movie

[00:08:01] Yeah

[00:08:02] I would say that this was my favorite movie of his

[00:08:06] because for any other filmmaker this would be far and away in my favorite movie

[00:08:09] that anyone has ever made

[00:08:11] because I like it more than most movies ever

[00:08:13] but like, I also fucking love T-2

[00:08:15] T-2 and this are probably like, tied for me

[00:08:17] How do you feel about T-2, Fran?

[00:08:18] I like T-2

[00:08:19] Is it weird that I know T-2 better than...

[00:08:21] No, I think that's typical

[00:08:22] Yeah

[00:08:23] Especially for people who are age

[00:08:24] Last week when we recorded Terminator

[00:08:26] that was my second time ever seeing it

[00:08:27] in Terminator 2

[00:08:28] I've probably seen like 10 times

[00:08:29] Yeah

[00:08:30] Well, I was telling David that I watched Terminator

[00:08:32] like yesterday into today

[00:08:33] and I had only ever seen like most of it on TV

[00:08:36] Yeah

[00:08:37] Yeah, I went deep

[00:08:38] I just wanted to see it

[00:08:39] to like have a frame of reference for Aliens

[00:08:41] And good movie, right?

[00:08:42] Yeah

[00:08:43] She seemed less enthusiastic

[00:08:44] It's fine

[00:08:46] I mean, I don't like it as much as T-2

[00:08:48] I agree with you

[00:08:49] But it's good

[00:08:50] and I didn't know as gross as it was

[00:08:52] like I didn't know about the sex scene

[00:08:53] because I've only seen it on network TV

[00:08:55] Yeah, and the violence

[00:08:56] It's a nasty little movie

[00:08:58] And the violence is very like cold and disturbing

[00:09:00] Like it's an upsetting movie

[00:09:01] Yeah, it ends up

[00:09:02] Yeah

[00:09:03] It's about a man who stalks women and murders them

[00:09:05] with a gun

[00:09:06] and then he bursts into police station

[00:09:07] and he shoots a bunch of them too

[00:09:09] Which it's

[00:09:10] Like with cold calculation

[00:09:11] It's very interesting

[00:09:12] And then there's some business with a skeleton

[00:09:13] Yeah

[00:09:14] Right

[00:09:15] And Technoir

[00:09:16] Technoir

[00:09:17] This film is an interesting follow-up

[00:09:18] because it has a lot of the same

[00:09:20] sort of themes and ideas

[00:09:21] but is done in a much more

[00:09:23] inspirational way

[00:09:25] Emotional

[00:09:26] It's more emotionally deep

[00:09:27] and it's also like you're invested in

[00:09:29] It's a story of triumph ultimately

[00:09:31] Mm-hmm

[00:09:32] Whereas Terminator is like the success

[00:09:35] at the end of the film is the character accepting

[00:09:37] how fucking difficult the rest of her life is

[00:09:39] That is true

[00:09:40] You know it's like a very bitter sweet ending

[00:09:42] where it's like well the guy's dead

[00:09:44] and her life's gonna be fucking hard

[00:09:46] The future's not set

[00:09:47] Yes

[00:09:48] This movie

[00:09:50] God, I love this movie

[00:09:51] So we watch the

[00:09:52] I mean this movie is

[00:09:54] I mean the end of this movie is also kind of like

[00:09:57] Okay

[00:09:58] Okay

[00:09:59] Alright that's over with

[00:10:00] I think that's over with

[00:10:01] Let's take a nap

[00:10:02] and like that's how the movie ends

[00:10:03] which is exactly how Alien ends

[00:10:05] which is the same exact ending

[00:10:06] even though

[00:10:07] Yeah

[00:10:08] I was just gonna say before we talk about it further

[00:10:10] we watch the director's cut

[00:10:11] aka the special edition

[00:10:12] Yeah, so do I

[00:10:13] I mean I think

[00:10:14] everything in director's cut

[00:10:15] is stuff that should have been the movie

[00:10:17] from the beginning

[00:10:18] and probably just got cut out

[00:10:19] because he wasn't powerful enough yet

[00:10:20] to get whatever he wanted

[00:10:22] Yep

[00:10:23] Done or whatever

[00:10:24] I don't know they wanted more of an action movie

[00:10:25] I guess

[00:10:26] They balked at the idea of like a 235 runtime

[00:10:29] and I think they just like

[00:10:30] Oh, two hours and 35 minutes right there

[00:10:32] Yes

[00:10:33] I think philosophically they were like

[00:10:34] this movie cannot be 235

[00:10:35] so they made him cut it down to like

[00:10:37] 212 for the sake

[00:10:38] Like 210, yeah something like that

[00:10:39] Yeah, yeah

[00:10:40] But it's 215

[00:10:41] Yeah, but it's a much more organic cut

[00:10:43] There's a lot more emotional resonance to it

[00:10:45] So I just want to

[00:10:46] So I

[00:10:48] as we've talked about

[00:10:49] because this will be a recurring theme

[00:10:50] in the James Cameron mini series

[00:10:51] was a protective

[00:10:54] mother shielded me for most action films

[00:10:56] and then when I was like

[00:10:57] Oh right, you didn't hear this one

[00:10:58] Yeah

[00:10:59] 1011-12

[00:11:00] His mother wouldn't let him watch

[00:11:01] cynical works of cinema

[00:11:03] or Rugrats

[00:11:04] Which he deemed cynical

[00:11:05] Yes

[00:11:06] There was a point in time

[00:11:07] when I was like 1011-12

[00:11:08] where suddenly I had like more autonomy

[00:11:09] to go across the street to the

[00:11:10] to get whatever I wanted

[00:11:11] I got really into action movies

[00:11:12] because it was like this thing

[00:11:13] I had like not been able to cover all

[00:11:15] So I got really really into the alien franchise

[00:11:18] and love like you know

[00:11:19] that they all existed

[00:11:20] and I could like watch one

[00:11:21] on a Friday

[00:11:22] and wait the next week at school

[00:11:24] and fuck doodle Ripley

[00:11:26] and then be like next Friday

[00:11:27] I can rent aliens

[00:11:28] You know like I had like a week

[00:11:29] to process like each movie

[00:11:30] Look that was the way we were

[00:11:31] when we were the way we were

[00:11:33] It was the best

[00:11:34] And like it was much better

[00:11:35] Yeah

[00:11:36] And I would also do like

[00:11:37] I do triple features

[00:11:38] So I remember there was one night

[00:11:39] where I rented the first alien

[00:11:41] the first predator

[00:11:42] and being John Malkovich

[00:11:44] Which is like the best triple feature

[00:11:46] I've ever created

[00:11:47] and I watched those like three in a row

[00:11:48] and I was like

[00:11:49] these two fucking franchises rule

[00:11:51] I want to see all the other

[00:11:52] predator and alien movies

[00:11:53] and then Predator 2

[00:11:54] I've never been able to make it

[00:11:55] through the entire idea

[00:11:56] I've never seen any Predator movies

[00:11:57] Predator 1's great

[00:11:58] Predator 2

[00:11:59] I also haven't finished

[00:12:00] Yeah

[00:12:01] I've seen it on TV

[00:12:02] Yeah

[00:12:03] I always fall asleep

[00:12:04] But aliens I watched and loved

[00:12:05] Sure

[00:12:06] Watched the director's cut

[00:12:07] Sure

[00:12:08] Do you own the quadrilogy?

[00:12:09] I do

[00:12:10] I've repurchased it on Blu-ray

[00:12:12] I should do that

[00:12:13] Yeah

[00:12:14] And now I feel like a cheesecake

[00:12:15] But I had

[00:12:16] I mean I would rewatch it a lot

[00:12:17] but I think only ever watched

[00:12:19] the director's cut

[00:12:20] That was the first version I'd seen

[00:12:21] And I was just like

[00:12:22] why would I watch the fucking

[00:12:23] basic

[00:12:24] But you have a story

[00:12:25] theatrical

[00:12:26] and then my sister

[00:12:28] who is

[00:12:30] my sister Romley

[00:12:32] has been getting more and more

[00:12:33] into film recently

[00:12:34] and she generally does not

[00:12:36] love action movies

[00:12:37] or sci-fi movies

[00:12:38] So I always

[00:12:39] relish opportunity

[00:12:40] if there's one I think that

[00:12:41] could get through to her

[00:12:42] And I felt like the themes

[00:12:43] and the characters

[00:12:44] and aliens

[00:12:45] were on her wavelength enough

[00:12:46] that she could tap into the movie

[00:12:48] And so I had to sort of

[00:12:49] prime her and go like

[00:12:50] don't get caught up in like

[00:12:51] the technical

[00:12:52] the world building

[00:12:53] like look at the through line

[00:12:54] look at Ripley

[00:12:55] look at Newt

[00:12:56] like that's the stuff to focus on

[00:12:57] that's the story of the movie

[00:12:58] And then took her to see it

[00:12:59] it was on Alien Day this year

[00:13:01] and it was like the first year

[00:13:02] that Fox put all this

[00:13:03] marketing muscle behind like

[00:13:05] 421 is Alien Day

[00:13:07] they're trying to make it

[00:13:08] like they're May the 4th

[00:13:09] because it's 421 is the planet

[00:13:12] So they make it April 21st

[00:13:14] and

[00:13:15] and so they did like a bunch of events

[00:13:17] and promotional things or whatever

[00:13:18] and they screened Alien

[00:13:20] Alamo Draft House

[00:13:21] organized it

[00:13:22] they screened Alien

[00:13:23] at town hall

[00:13:25] and Sigourney Weaver was there

[00:13:26] cool

[00:13:27] and Allison Walmore

[00:13:28] like did an hour long conversation

[00:13:29] with Sigourney Weaver afterwards

[00:13:31] Sigourney herself

[00:13:32] which was great

[00:13:33] and I was like

[00:13:34] this is fucking ideal

[00:13:36] friend of the show

[00:13:38] past and future guest

[00:13:39] Rachel Lang was there

[00:13:40] along with Alice

[00:13:41] Rachel Girlfriend

[00:13:42] and it was like

[00:13:43] she's the fucking biggest aliens fan

[00:13:44] my sister there

[00:13:45] like die hard audience

[00:13:46] he's pumping his fists in the air

[00:13:48] this is the way for fucking

[00:13:49] Romley to see it

[00:13:50] and then the movie starts

[00:13:51] and it's the fucking theatrical version

[00:13:52] and I had never seen the theatrical version

[00:13:54] which has a lot less of the

[00:13:55] character stuff essentially

[00:13:56] that's the thing

[00:13:57] like the stuff that I thought

[00:13:58] would hit her the hardest

[00:13:59] the 20 minutes they cut out

[00:14:01] are the things that I think

[00:14:02] would have pushed it over the edge

[00:14:03] a lot of newt

[00:14:04] yeah and just like

[00:14:05] a lot of extra newt

[00:14:06] and you miss the scene of Ripley

[00:14:07] being told that her daughter died

[00:14:08] at the beginning

[00:14:09] which if you don't have that

[00:14:10] it takes like an hour

[00:14:11] and 10 minutes for that to pay off

[00:14:12] and if you're like someone

[00:14:14] who doesn't really engage

[00:14:15] with action movies

[00:14:16] no no your point is made

[00:14:17] it was a bummer

[00:14:18] but I realized

[00:14:19] like when I was watching it

[00:14:20] like oh I think this is the first

[00:14:21] time I've ever seen a theatrical

[00:14:23] because the other

[00:14:25] films in the franchise

[00:14:26] because the quadrilogy set

[00:14:27] had both versions

[00:14:28] I would watch both versions

[00:14:29] and with aliens

[00:14:30] I was just like

[00:14:31] why would I bother

[00:14:32] like I've heard what they cut out

[00:14:33] and why would I bother

[00:14:34] and like so

[00:14:35] go ahead

[00:14:36] no I just saw

[00:14:37] we get it

[00:14:38] I saw on a big screen

[00:14:39] theatrical for the first time

[00:14:40] like five months ago

[00:14:41] and then rewatched this

[00:14:42] last night

[00:14:43] and was like

[00:14:44] this is the best

[00:14:45] so guys watch the director's cut

[00:14:46] yeah

[00:14:48] aliens

[00:14:49] I rules

[00:14:50] I've seen it a bunch of times

[00:14:51] I don't have any interesting

[00:14:52] story about it

[00:14:53] I love alien

[00:14:54] I've seen it a million times

[00:14:55] I love aliens

[00:14:56] I've seen it a million times

[00:14:57] they're like my favorite

[00:14:58] I've always loved them

[00:14:59] they were like

[00:15:00] some of the first scary movies

[00:15:01] I ever saw

[00:15:02] the first aliens like one of

[00:15:03] your absolute

[00:15:04] like five favorite movies

[00:15:05] yeah definitely

[00:15:06] my dad was obsessed with them

[00:15:08] I mean it's just sort of

[00:15:09] always been in my

[00:15:10] like atmosphere

[00:15:12] or whatever I don't know

[00:15:13] I was always gonna love

[00:15:14] alien and an aliens

[00:15:15] and I do

[00:15:16] they're great

[00:15:17] we're gonna talk about it

[00:15:18] Fran what's your experience

[00:15:19] of aliens

[00:15:20] I mean it's the same

[00:15:21] I was my mom though

[00:15:22] who like loves that

[00:15:23] my mom's very cool

[00:15:24] me and Fran got bagels

[00:15:25] as like I said

[00:15:26] and we talked a lot

[00:15:27] about our mom

[00:15:28] yeah cause my mom

[00:15:29] was really into like

[00:15:30] sort of the genre films

[00:15:31] of the 80s

[00:15:32] so I maybe actually

[00:15:33] saw aliens

[00:15:34] before I saw the original

[00:15:35] alien

[00:15:36] interesting

[00:15:37] but they were both

[00:15:38] sort of like things

[00:15:39] things we watched

[00:15:40] and probably also

[00:15:41] like some of my first

[00:15:42] scary movies

[00:15:43] and I don't think either of them

[00:15:44] are really all that scary

[00:15:45] no they certainly were

[00:15:46] scarier than other things

[00:15:47] they're quite frightening

[00:15:48] I was watching

[00:15:49] I mean it's effective

[00:15:50] horror in that a lot goes unseen

[00:15:52] especially in the first

[00:15:53] year

[00:15:54] yeah I'd say aliens is like

[00:15:55] a very scary action film

[00:15:56] right but it is more intense

[00:15:58] than it is like

[00:15:59] jump scary

[00:16:00] or whatever

[00:16:01] yeah and the thing it hasn't

[00:16:02] come with horror still

[00:16:03] it's not as brooding

[00:16:04] sure

[00:16:05] but especially with the

[00:16:06] director's cut

[00:16:07] it is such a slow build

[00:16:08] powder keg movie

[00:16:09] you know

[00:16:10] it is

[00:16:11] very that's true

[00:16:12] even theatrical version

[00:16:13] it's very methodical

[00:16:14] and it's very elegant

[00:16:15] and sort of just slowly

[00:16:16] building everything up

[00:16:17] so like you don't see an alien

[00:16:18] for a while

[00:16:19] the marines don't enter

[00:16:20] until 30 minutes

[00:16:21] and yeah

[00:16:22] that's what I love about it

[00:16:23] no absolutely

[00:16:24] and then it takes time

[00:16:25] with the marines

[00:16:26] lets you get them

[00:16:27] lets you

[00:16:28] sort of like

[00:16:29] feel like you like

[00:16:30] or at least sort of

[00:16:31] enjoy their pattern

[00:16:32] and they're like

[00:16:33] yeah I don't know

[00:16:34] like everything is

[00:16:35] introduced very

[00:16:36] I mean he's

[00:16:37] smart motherfucker

[00:16:38] yeah

[00:16:39] but it's like

[00:16:40] it's a very active

[00:16:41] structure where it's like

[00:16:42] first 30 minutes of the film

[00:16:43] are just like

[00:16:44] Ripley dealing with PTSD

[00:16:45] and acclimating to the world

[00:16:46] that she's now woken up

[00:16:47] and having to deal with

[00:16:48] a slightly thirsty

[00:16:49] Paul Reiser

[00:16:50] right yeah

[00:16:51] slightly thirsty

[00:16:52] yeah he's pretty thirsty

[00:16:53] he's a fucking human

[00:16:54] thirst trap

[00:16:55] he answers his video

[00:16:56] phone without a shirt on

[00:16:57] he knows what he's doing

[00:16:58] I love that

[00:16:59] he's got those sparkling

[00:17:00] baby blues

[00:17:01] and he goes like

[00:17:02] oh Ripley

[00:17:03] come on now

[00:17:04] her name came up

[00:17:05] on the video

[00:17:06] this is bullshit

[00:17:07] yeah

[00:17:08] he's mad about her

[00:17:09] out

[00:17:10] me?

[00:17:11] I have to leave

[00:17:12] alright

[00:17:13] my own podcast

[00:17:14] five comedy points

[00:17:15] you don't have to give me comedy points

[00:17:17] just let me say

[00:17:18] that's act one

[00:17:19] act two is like

[00:17:20] getting to know the marines

[00:17:21] sure

[00:17:22] understanding that structure

[00:17:23] getting to the

[00:17:24] LV426 or whatever

[00:17:26] you know the

[00:17:27] the colony

[00:17:28] yeah but you don't

[00:17:29] like you don't see a xenomorph

[00:17:30] until like over an hour in

[00:17:32] sure

[00:17:33] I think they don't find

[00:17:34] newt until like

[00:17:35] 115

[00:17:36] something like that

[00:17:37] you know

[00:17:38] the movie really takes its time

[00:17:39] building up every element

[00:17:40] and giving you time

[00:17:41] and here's another thing

[00:17:42] I fucking love about Cameron

[00:17:43] and I think this movie

[00:17:44] does it the best of all of his movies

[00:17:46] he

[00:17:47] really

[00:17:48] likes process

[00:17:49] both in terms of technical

[00:17:51] process

[00:17:52] but also just like

[00:17:53] the machinery of how like

[00:17:55] the squad works

[00:17:57] you know how they'll

[00:17:58] attack a situation

[00:17:59] in the director's cut

[00:18:00] and this isn't in the after

[00:18:01] like all those shots

[00:18:02] of the bullet counts going down

[00:18:03] oh yeah

[00:18:04] in the automated guns where it's like

[00:18:06] I don't know

[00:18:07] there's something about the fact that we

[00:18:09] follow it in great detail

[00:18:10] like the rounds going

[00:18:11] like you could just throw one shot at it

[00:18:14] it's perfect

[00:18:15] but the other thing he does is

[00:18:16] and then he rings tension out of it

[00:18:17] but he sets it up

[00:18:18] like he does shit like

[00:18:19] showing Ripley working

[00:18:21] the power loader earlier in the film

[00:18:22] so you understand what it is

[00:18:24] how it works

[00:18:25] getting you into the space

[00:18:26] knowing all the like

[00:18:27] the like

[00:18:28] the like

[00:18:29] look let's slow it down

[00:18:30] but let's talk about even

[00:18:31] just the fucking

[00:18:32] opening scene case and point right

[00:18:33] yes

[00:18:34] the opening of this movie

[00:18:35] talk about this

[00:18:36] sorry I just looked at everyone very excited

[00:18:37] you mean where

[00:18:38] like the machine comes in

[00:18:39] and it's like

[00:18:40] scanning

[00:18:41] like scanning everything

[00:18:43] the weird blue light

[00:18:44] and slowly taking the time

[00:18:45] to like burn the door open

[00:18:47] to solder it open

[00:18:48] you know

[00:18:49] it's really so good

[00:18:50] and it's like silent

[00:18:51] I mean there's a lot of like

[00:18:52] sort of

[00:18:53] ambient noise in this movie

[00:18:55] like the score of this film is great

[00:18:56] but he used it very rarely

[00:18:58] which we talked about on

[00:18:59] James Bond

[00:19:00] the Terminator episode as well

[00:19:01] you know he like

[00:19:02] uses it as his like

[00:19:03] Fred Astaire hands

[00:19:04] to like be a showstopper

[00:19:05] but a lot of the scenes

[00:19:07] they're like you're just seeing

[00:19:09] people doing stuff

[00:19:11] and it's just clinking

[00:19:12] it's dripping

[00:19:13] there's a lot of times this sort of

[00:19:15] like

[00:19:16] like hum in the background

[00:19:17] of the ships and everything

[00:19:18] he's borrowing from Alien

[00:19:19] a little bit

[00:19:20] which is a very or

[00:19:21] oral

[00:19:22] oral

[00:19:23] yes

[00:19:24] movie

[00:19:25] a lot of clicks

[00:19:26] a lot of clicking and clanking

[00:19:27] and flashing lights

[00:19:28] that

[00:19:29] like it wants to explain to you

[00:19:30] what the flashing light means

[00:19:31] rather than just have a flashing

[00:19:32] light

[00:19:33] what I find interesting about his use of it here

[00:19:34] and certainly he's like

[00:19:35] continuing an aesthetic

[00:19:37] that release got created in the first one

[00:19:39] right

[00:19:40] what I find interesting about it here

[00:19:41] is

[00:19:42] in the first Alien

[00:19:43] the crew is much smaller

[00:19:44] yep

[00:19:45] and they start getting killed off much faster

[00:19:47] so the like silence

[00:19:48] and the ambient noise

[00:19:49] is a byproduct of

[00:19:50] not a lot of people

[00:19:51] very isolated

[00:19:52] right

[00:19:53] and in this even when they're large groups

[00:19:54] will have scenes where it's like

[00:19:55] the full marines

[00:19:56] and they're like armoring up

[00:19:58] and they're just not talking

[00:19:59] yeah

[00:20:00] and you see them testing the shit out

[00:20:01] and like

[00:20:02] a lot of fucking movies

[00:20:04] when people have like

[00:20:05] especially now that we're in like

[00:20:07] day and age where sci-fi

[00:20:08] and superhero stuff

[00:20:09] and all this stuff where you have these

[00:20:10] like unwieldy costumes

[00:20:11] more and more things are like

[00:20:12] costume base right

[00:20:13] and these costumes are like

[00:20:15] I can speak from experience

[00:20:16] very hard to move in

[00:20:17] like weirdly restricting

[00:20:19] oh you can speak from experience

[00:20:20] I can speak from experience

[00:20:21] wow

[00:20:22] that's disgusting

[00:20:24] carry on

[00:20:25] I'm excited for you

[00:20:26] everyone go right in front of you

[00:20:27] thank you

[00:20:28] it's done by now

[00:20:29] yeah well

[00:20:30] it'll be done by the time this episode is over

[00:20:32] the window will be over

[00:20:33] and I don't know whether or not I have

[00:20:34] hopefully you have a job

[00:20:35] hopefully

[00:20:36] kind of like how

[00:20:37] in the episode we recorded yesterday

[00:20:38] they weren't here for a while

[00:20:39] we were asked to predict

[00:20:40] the result of the election

[00:20:41] oh yeah we recorded an episode yesterday

[00:20:43] until after we know whether or not

[00:20:45] America has died

[00:20:46] me and Griffin got very quiet

[00:20:48] and like

[00:20:49] oh well I hope things went well

[00:20:50] like you know

[00:20:51] like

[00:20:52] it felt like a scene from Aliens

[00:20:53] you could hear the dripping

[00:20:54] and the clinking

[00:20:55] and the humming

[00:20:56] in the background

[00:20:57] no I just love that there's like

[00:20:58] you see the testing out of the machinery

[00:21:00] and he has the characters

[00:21:01] like not talk

[00:21:02] but it also is like

[00:21:03] he takes the time to explain to you

[00:21:05] like how each gun works

[00:21:06] you know there's the long scene where

[00:21:08] Hicks explains it to Ripley

[00:21:09] but also just like

[00:21:10] that thing with the turrets

[00:21:12] you know it's like

[00:21:13] you understand the system

[00:21:14] you know where they are

[00:21:15] he doesn't have to cut to the Aliens

[00:21:16] the first turret sequence

[00:21:17] they don't even cut

[00:21:18] to the fucking Aliens

[00:21:19] getting shot

[00:21:20] they just look at the screen

[00:21:22] no what are you guys doing

[00:21:23] it's cutting between the

[00:21:24] love it

[00:21:25] it's good

[00:21:26] okay so the movie opens with

[00:21:27] I'm gonna give you some backstory

[00:21:28] I'm gonna give you some content

[00:21:29] okay so Alien came out

[00:21:30] mm-hmm

[00:21:31] good movie

[00:21:32] 79

[00:21:33] yeah

[00:21:34] a medium-sized hit

[00:21:36] but like you know

[00:21:38] not like I mean it was a block

[00:21:39] but I guess it was a big hit

[00:21:40] but it was you know

[00:21:41] it's still like a weird

[00:21:42] gross of an Alan movie

[00:21:43] and it was very expensive

[00:21:44] that's another thing

[00:21:45] it was very expensive

[00:21:46] it was 20th Century Fox

[00:21:47] it was an Alan Lad joint

[00:21:48] crazy old Alan Lad

[00:21:49] who we've talked about on this podcast

[00:21:50] we love Alan Lad

[00:21:51] Greed and Light

[00:21:52] and Robert Altman's Dreams

[00:21:53] doing all kinds of weird shit over there

[00:21:55] but this is coming two years after

[00:21:56] George Lucas comes in

[00:21:57] and barfs on his table

[00:21:58] and he's like make Star Wars

[00:21:59] that sounds good to say

[00:22:00] this is two years after Star Wars

[00:22:01] George Lucas comes in

[00:22:02] and basically describes

[00:22:03] like an acid dream to him

[00:22:05] like where it's like

[00:22:06] the Journal of the Wills

[00:22:07] and he's like

[00:22:08] it's great

[00:22:09] we're gonna give you so much money

[00:22:10] yeah so he's crazy

[00:22:12] he gets

[00:22:13] he leaves

[00:22:14] but I'm just saying

[00:22:15] this is two years after

[00:22:16] Fox Greenlight's Star Wars

[00:22:17] sure

[00:22:18] oh you mean you're talking about Alien

[00:22:19] yes the first one

[00:22:20] which I think is important

[00:22:21] because it's like

[00:22:22] definitely in the wake of

[00:22:23] like oh sci-fi sci-fi

[00:22:24] and then really Scott delivers

[00:22:25] a very different type of sci-fi movie

[00:22:27] sure yeah

[00:22:28] but you know

[00:22:29] but it's special

[00:22:30] and they famously

[00:22:31] not to merchandise spotlight here

[00:22:32] but like

[00:22:33] developed a whole line of toys for Alien

[00:22:34] and then the movie came out

[00:22:35] everyone was like

[00:22:36] kids can't buy this shit

[00:22:37] and they like took everything off the shelves

[00:22:39] they like cancelled

[00:22:40] or like retracted everything

[00:22:42] because parents were like

[00:22:43] no

[00:22:44] I'm not gonna let my kid

[00:22:45] play with some penis headed Alien

[00:22:48] alright so Alan Lad leaves

[00:22:50] Fox is like

[00:22:51] the new guys are like

[00:22:52] no we don't want an Alien sequel

[00:22:53] then eventually after a while

[00:22:54] there's newer new guys

[00:22:55] and they're like

[00:22:56] we want an Alien sequel

[00:22:57] and they see the script for the Terminator

[00:23:00] which is crazy

[00:23:01] they don't even see the movie

[00:23:02] and based on that

[00:23:04] like they

[00:23:05] I mean

[00:23:06] they say do you want to write Aliens

[00:23:07] or you want to make Aliens for us

[00:23:08] Cameron like

[00:23:10] he isn't even making the Terminator yet

[00:23:11] he's getting ready to make the Terminator

[00:23:13] he like secrets himself away

[00:23:14] and he gives him

[00:23:15] a treatment

[00:23:16] I don't think he gave him a full script

[00:23:17] it's like a 45 page treatment

[00:23:19] was talking about it with Rachel Lange

[00:23:21] you're brushing over the infamous story

[00:23:23] I just love to brush over the infamous story

[00:23:25] the original pitch

[00:23:27] he goes into the Fox boardroom

[00:23:29] a bunch of executives

[00:23:30] oh yeah right

[00:23:31] there's like a chalkboard

[00:23:32] or whatever behind him

[00:23:33] and he walks in

[00:23:34] whether or not this is true

[00:23:36] it's a perfect James Cameron myth

[00:23:38] it's exactly what you want to believe he did

[00:23:39] walks into the room

[00:23:40] chalkboard looks everyone

[00:23:41] hello hello

[00:23:43] silence, ambient noise humming right

[00:23:45] picks up the chalk

[00:23:46] you hear the clank very

[00:23:47] crisp audio

[00:23:48] well mixed right

[00:23:49] picks up the chalk

[00:23:50] and he writes the word alien

[00:23:51] on the board

[00:23:52] he turns out to them

[00:23:53] and then turns back around

[00:23:56] puts an S at the end of alien

[00:23:58] and then looks at them

[00:23:59] and goes like

[00:24:00] I didn't see that coming

[00:24:01] and then turns back around more time

[00:24:02] puts the two lines through the S

[00:24:04] makes it a dollar sign

[00:24:05] and then drops the chalk

[00:24:07] and the urban legend is

[00:24:08] that's the original pitch

[00:24:09] and they were like

[00:24:10] sure write a treatment

[00:24:11] like that was the meeting

[00:24:12] to like approve it

[00:24:13] whether or not

[00:24:14] to commission him to write a treatment

[00:24:15] is a good idea to pluralize

[00:24:16] this name

[00:24:17] maybe the best idea ever

[00:24:19] and then that's to make it into a dollar sign

[00:24:22] well I didn't know about that part

[00:24:23] that's pretty cool

[00:24:24] it's a pretty bulletproof

[00:24:25] pitch for a movie

[00:24:26] you I mean

[00:24:27] it's like that's the two things

[00:24:28] you need to know

[00:24:29] is that there's more than one

[00:24:30] and it'll make money

[00:24:31] I'm trying to think of

[00:24:32] yeah

[00:24:33] that's a weird thing people don't do

[00:24:34] in their pitching movies

[00:24:35] I promise that it will make money

[00:24:38] by the way guys

[00:24:39] I've thought about this

[00:24:40] I feel like people don't care

[00:24:41] about money as much

[00:24:42] I'm just kidding

[00:24:43] movies aren't about money

[00:24:45] in Hollywood

[00:24:46] it's about art these days

[00:24:47] they don't really care about

[00:24:48] the franchises or brands

[00:24:49] or anything like that

[00:24:50] it's really not money

[00:24:51] now folks I got a weird

[00:24:52] a weird hook for this movie

[00:24:54] here's my idea

[00:24:55] I'm thinking it's gonna be

[00:24:56] a big hit

[00:24:57] a cha-ching

[00:24:59] I want people to love it

[00:25:00] and pay money to see it many times

[00:25:01] I'm just trying to think of

[00:25:02] like what's a movie

[00:25:03] it was a big hit

[00:25:04] Titanic

[00:25:06] like if someone went in

[00:25:07] and was like

[00:25:08] Titanic's

[00:25:09] like I just had the idea

[00:25:10] like you know

[00:25:11] that you would pluralize

[00:25:12] something just in some

[00:25:13] nonsensical way

[00:25:14] put in dollars

[00:25:15] gladiators

[00:25:16] like you know

[00:25:17] dollar sign

[00:25:19] the mummies

[00:25:20] and then you're like

[00:25:21] oh no it's wrong

[00:25:22] fuck yeah

[00:25:23] alright

[00:25:25] so he writes his treatment

[00:25:26] Sean the sheep

[00:25:27] Sean the sheeps

[00:25:28] Sean the

[00:25:29] let's make a joke about the fact

[00:25:30] that she was single

[00:25:31] no it's good

[00:25:32] damn well

[00:25:33] what'd you think

[00:25:34] it's okay

[00:25:35] yeah I agree

[00:25:36] he writes his treatment

[00:25:37] they like his treatment

[00:25:38] yeah cause it was good

[00:25:39] Sigaroni Weaver

[00:25:40] Sigaroni Weaver

[00:25:41] Sigaroni and cheese

[00:25:42] Sigaroni and cheese

[00:25:43] yeah exactly Sigaroni and cheese

[00:25:45] sits down with him

[00:25:46] and he's like

[00:25:47] he pitches her in somewhere

[00:25:48] and she wasn't that into it

[00:25:49] he pitches her

[00:25:50] she's into it

[00:25:51] yeah she was like

[00:25:52] I don't want to make another one

[00:25:53] but every time she's like that

[00:25:54] every time

[00:25:55] except now when she wants to make one

[00:25:56] with fucking Chappy

[00:25:57] I know

[00:25:58] why does she want to do that

[00:25:59] and just to be clear

[00:26:00] we're not being reductive

[00:26:01] Chappy is now attached

[00:26:02] to direct that film

[00:26:03] Neil Blumkamp has dropped off

[00:26:04] he was like look

[00:26:05] Chappy

[00:26:06] he's a filmmaking machine

[00:26:07] oh I can direct the new aliens

[00:26:09] oh I'm a real gangster

[00:26:11] Chappy he sounds kind of like that

[00:26:12] oh I'm a real gangster

[00:26:14] and I'm Chubby

[00:26:16] you can't even say his own name right?

[00:26:17] oh I'm Chubby

[00:26:18] sounded like you said Chubby

[00:26:20] I'm Chubby

[00:26:21] alright

[00:26:22] that's my mediocre Chappy impression

[00:26:24] so he pitches her on like

[00:26:25] you're gonna be this sort of

[00:26:26] like woman warrior type

[00:26:27] like you're not gonna be

[00:26:28] like sort of the scared

[00:26:29] lady running around

[00:26:30] like the bowels of the ship

[00:26:31] trying to escape

[00:26:32] and it's about motherhood

[00:26:34] it's about motherhood

[00:26:35] he's about motherhood

[00:26:36] he might have like

[00:26:37] done the thing with the dollar sign

[00:26:39] maybe he was like

[00:26:40] is there a chalkboard like

[00:26:41] he wrote the word mom

[00:26:42] on a chalkboard

[00:26:43] and then made it mom's

[00:26:44] and then made it his dollar sign

[00:26:47] that's the pitch to Alice and Jenny

[00:26:48] whenever mom's

[00:26:50] mom's tanks

[00:26:51] mom's tanks

[00:26:52] Jesus

[00:26:53] alright

[00:26:54] and then he takes this

[00:26:55] Vietnam

[00:26:57] thing like and plaster's

[00:26:58] it on top of it

[00:26:59] that's why dad's bought

[00:27:00] cause they didn't do

[00:27:01] dollar sign

[00:27:02] cause they didn't do dad first

[00:27:04] I see

[00:27:05] all in due time

[00:27:06] you have to masculine

[00:27:07] I barely remember what dad's was

[00:27:09] it was the show

[00:27:10] it was with Martin Maul

[00:27:11] and Giovanni Robisi

[00:27:12] and Seth Green

[00:27:13] and they all looked pretty

[00:27:14] sideways mouth on the poster

[00:27:16] they were doing a lot of like

[00:27:17] hmm

[00:27:19] gonna look it up now

[00:27:20] anyway

[00:27:21] he gloms this Vietnam

[00:27:23] concept onto it

[00:27:24] right

[00:27:26] you know

[00:27:27] buffed up Marines

[00:27:28] and enemy territory

[00:27:29] like who do not understand

[00:27:30] like the terrain

[00:27:31] the enemy

[00:27:32] like who are like over fire

[00:27:33] powered and under

[00:27:35] you know intelligence

[00:27:37] those are both words

[00:27:38] and whatever

[00:27:39] like right

[00:27:40] he like I feel like this is

[00:27:41] James Cameron's big ideas

[00:27:42] like we need to make a sort of

[00:27:43] fucked up Vietnam movie

[00:27:45] as a sequel to alien

[00:27:46] which is not like that at all

[00:27:48] no

[00:27:49] alien is basically a movie about

[00:27:50] how

[00:27:51] space is a job

[00:27:53] now

[00:27:54] and it's kind of boring

[00:27:55] in a pain

[00:27:56] and when a monster gets on your

[00:27:57] ship mostly people are like

[00:27:59] like can we change my contract

[00:28:01] so that like the monster

[00:28:02] deal me dealing with the

[00:28:03] monsters reflected on it

[00:28:04] you know like

[00:28:05] you know like they

[00:28:06] get a discrest call

[00:28:07] and the first part of

[00:28:08] alien is them being like

[00:28:09] no

[00:28:10] there's nothing in the profits

[00:28:11] from about a distress call

[00:28:13] here like you gotta

[00:28:14] give me a new contract

[00:28:15] I'm not gonna go on some planet

[00:28:16] just because they're

[00:28:17] I love that about it

[00:28:18] me too it's the best

[00:28:19] people trying to do their job

[00:28:20] they're just like Jesus

[00:28:21] we woke up out of the

[00:28:22] fridges

[00:28:24] they're like

[00:28:25] so mad it's a horror movie

[00:28:26] that that's what it becomes

[00:28:27] as like how people should be

[00:28:29] like I would kind of get killed now

[00:28:32] do you think they'll ever be

[00:28:33] like a studio genre film

[00:28:34] where the cast looks

[00:28:35] as tired as they do

[00:28:36] an alien

[00:28:37] so tired

[00:28:38] alien they're just so run down

[00:28:39] from the opening scene

[00:28:40] the second they wake up

[00:28:41] they're like Jesus fucking Christ

[00:28:44] poster for dads

[00:28:45] yeah poster for dads

[00:28:46] a lot of sideways

[00:28:47] a lot of sideways

[00:28:48] I forgot about a puff

[00:28:49] and Giovanni Rubisi is doing that

[00:28:50] Rubisi's good

[00:28:51] I forgot about that

[00:28:52] cool boy

[00:28:53] they should have put

[00:28:54] a word bubble around him

[00:28:55] that said

[00:28:56] ooh boy

[00:28:57] I think the show would have

[00:28:58] done better if they'd done that

[00:28:59] the thing that's great

[00:29:00] about Cameron

[00:29:01] Cameron has made two

[00:29:03] phenomenal sequels

[00:29:04] right

[00:29:05] one two and this

[00:29:06] yes one to one of his

[00:29:07] own films

[00:29:08] if you count Avatar 2

[00:29:09] which is for sure a thing

[00:29:10] yeah go ahead

[00:29:11] 100% we pet the farm on it

[00:29:12] when it comes out

[00:29:13] 45 years from now

[00:29:14] I would love for it to be amazing though

[00:29:16] of course I mean

[00:29:17] it better be good

[00:29:18] I'm gonna be mad

[00:29:19] I'm gonna be disappointed

[00:29:20] I'm gonna be the one person

[00:29:21] who's disappointed

[00:29:22] I mean I don't know

[00:29:23] if you've said this on the podcast

[00:29:24] yeah but I quote it all the time

[00:29:25] when like

[00:29:26] we were talking one day about

[00:29:28] like the fact that it's

[00:29:29] like five Avatar sequels

[00:29:30] please quote me

[00:29:31] and you were like

[00:29:32] I don't think I need

[00:29:33] five Avatar movies

[00:29:34] but if James Cameron tells me

[00:29:35] I need five Avatar movies

[00:29:36] I need five Avatar movies

[00:29:37] at this point I trust him

[00:29:38] if I need

[00:29:39] if he's telling me I need five of them

[00:29:40] I need a full five

[00:29:41] James Cameron

[00:29:42] you know he knows what I should eat

[00:29:43] for dinner and lunch

[00:29:44] and breakfast

[00:29:45] yeah backwards

[00:29:46] yeah

[00:29:47] he has made two great sequels

[00:29:49] one to one of his own films

[00:29:50] one to someone else's

[00:29:51] sure

[00:29:52] and then one that hasn't been

[00:29:53] made yet but we're already

[00:29:54] sure as a masterpiece

[00:29:56] and the thing he does

[00:29:57] with both of them

[00:29:58] sequels are a weird art

[00:30:00] they are

[00:30:01] and I've like

[00:30:02] they're tough

[00:30:03] he's actually made three sequels

[00:30:04] PS

[00:30:05] we were forgetting Piranha

[00:30:06] which is

[00:30:07] not a good sequel

[00:30:08] yeah

[00:30:09] it's not I like Piranha actually

[00:30:10] and I don't like Piranha through the spawning

[00:30:12] um the thing

[00:30:13] uh he does in this film is

[00:30:15] lateral move

[00:30:17] sure

[00:30:18] you know there's the

[00:30:19] I'm trying to make aliens too

[00:30:20] continue the story

[00:30:21] make it bigger

[00:30:22] just heighten right

[00:30:23] and he does make this film

[00:30:24] bigger in scope than alien

[00:30:26] because there was a dollar sign

[00:30:27] with him

[00:30:28] right but he doesn't do it

[00:30:29] as a straight line

[00:30:30] he goes sideways

[00:30:31] and that sideways happens to be bigger

[00:30:32] so he's able to like

[00:30:34] have us kick me a two

[00:30:35] we're like the film is structurally

[00:30:36] very similar to the original alien

[00:30:38] and sort of the rhythms

[00:30:39] of how it builds

[00:30:40] the slow build to the alien

[00:30:42] you know then it becoming

[00:30:43] Ripley's last stand

[00:30:44] I mean all that sort of stuff

[00:30:45] but by like

[00:30:46] whole new cast of characters

[00:30:48] setting it so far

[00:30:49] in the future from the first film

[00:30:51] you know changing genres even to some degree

[00:30:54] yeah absolutely

[00:30:55] you're able to like

[00:30:56] make the old new again

[00:30:59] come at it from a new angle

[00:31:00] introduce it from a new space

[00:31:01] and have a film that works

[00:31:03] uh on its own

[00:31:04] and it is like an action film

[00:31:06] first and foremost

[00:31:07] but it's also like

[00:31:08] it's scary

[00:31:09] thoughtful

[00:31:11] elegant

[00:31:13] and speaking of things that are

[00:31:14] scary thoughtful and elegant

[00:31:15] damn

[00:31:16] there is one other person

[00:31:18] we forgot to introduce

[00:31:19] we haven't talked about him

[00:31:20] aside from those three

[00:31:21] adjectives that I just used to describe him

[00:31:23] what else is he

[00:31:24] well he's the producer of this podcast

[00:31:26] it's true

[00:31:27] producer Ben

[00:31:28] producer

[00:31:29] producer Ben

[00:31:30] the poet laureate

[00:31:31] Mr. Positive the haze

[00:31:33] sometimes we pour my toe into Mr. Positive

[00:31:35] people don't like that on the reddit though

[00:31:37] they don't like it on the reddit though

[00:31:38] mad on that reddit though

[00:31:39] I'm fine with it being discontinued

[00:31:41] birthday Benny

[00:31:42] he's the peeper

[00:31:43] then forget the peeper a little bit lately

[00:31:45] how could we forget the peeper

[00:31:47] well because you've been in the other room more lately

[00:31:49] he's not peeping anymore

[00:31:50] Ben used to peep at us from over there

[00:31:51] he used to look right there

[00:31:52] he used to sit in that corner

[00:31:53] but I have a camera so I can't

[00:31:55] oh okay oh

[00:31:56] I can't watch

[00:31:57] but we can't see the camera

[00:31:58] so we don't know that you're peeping

[00:31:59] we can't peep you peeping

[00:32:00] we used to be

[00:32:01] who peeps the peeper

[00:32:02] and it was us

[00:32:03] will you get through the name

[00:32:04] we used to look at him and he'd go like this

[00:32:05] peep peep peep peep peep peep peep peep

[00:32:09] it never got picked up on mic

[00:32:10] but I did that all the time

[00:32:11] peep peep peep

[00:32:13] he is not professor crispy

[00:32:15] no

[00:32:16] and don't you dare say it

[00:32:17] what you should say is hello fennel

[00:32:19] please

[00:32:20] when you see him

[00:32:21] he is the fuck master

[00:32:22] he's graduated different titles over the course

[00:32:24] of different miniseries

[00:32:25] all right

[00:32:26] Kylo Ben producer Ben Kenobi

[00:32:27] Ben Knight Shyamalan

[00:32:28] Ben Sate

[00:32:29] yeah

[00:32:30] Kenobi

[00:32:31] okay

[00:32:32] Penny Benny Lane

[00:32:33] Penny Benny Lane

[00:32:34] Benny Lane to say Benny thing

[00:32:35] it's still up in the air

[00:32:36] ladies and gentlemen Ben Hosley

[00:32:37] hey

[00:32:38] you like aliens

[00:32:39] wait hop in

[00:32:40] man I love aliens

[00:32:41] I actually

[00:32:42] good opinion

[00:32:45] well come on friend

[00:32:47] I just got into the conversation

[00:32:49] I don't know this episode could have gone in a real weird direction

[00:32:51] if this far into it you were like don't like it

[00:32:53] no

[00:32:54] two stars

[00:32:56] no it's great

[00:32:57] come on I mean

[00:32:58] and you know like

[00:32:59] just add my two cents

[00:33:00] yeah I feel like

[00:33:01] this is great because it's bigger

[00:33:03] well Ben likes things big

[00:33:04] I don't know if you know that friend

[00:33:05] it's bigger and there's a lot of technology in this movie

[00:33:08] and there's more of them

[00:33:10] yeah yes

[00:33:11] more of Ben technologies

[00:33:12] I have been on record I like numbers too

[00:33:13] the aliens are bigger in numbers right

[00:33:15] it's sort of the

[00:33:16] the key masters office

[00:33:18] of alien movies

[00:33:19] yeah

[00:33:20] yeah a lot of keys

[00:33:22] a lot of you're really hitting the reddit faves

[00:33:24] someone was talking about the keys

[00:33:25] cause I just read all of it today

[00:33:26] so it's very exciting that we have a reddit

[00:33:27] we love reddit

[00:33:28] reddit's a great site

[00:33:29] it's democratic

[00:33:30] nothing bad ever happened on reddit

[00:33:31] can I also say

[00:33:32] never

[00:33:33] I mean I know we're gonna get into the plot

[00:33:34] but a thing I'm very excited about

[00:33:36] is this movie portrays the future in a way that I love

[00:33:39] I truly love

[00:33:40] which is

[00:33:41] well I just like

[00:33:42] future smoking

[00:33:43] on spaceships and stuff

[00:33:44] they love to smoke on spaceships

[00:33:46] they smoke right out of the fridge

[00:33:47] I always

[00:33:48] with both alien and aliens

[00:33:49] anytime they smoke

[00:33:50] I wanna be like are you sure

[00:33:51] like

[00:33:52] no it's great though

[00:33:53] is that okay

[00:33:54] you can do that

[00:33:55] you seem to be on like

[00:33:56] a nuclear power plant essentially

[00:33:58] like

[00:33:59] yeah there's that great moment where

[00:34:01] Aephone wakes up

[00:34:02] from like the cryo sleep

[00:34:03] played by the great

[00:34:05] what the fuck is his name

[00:34:07] oh my god his name's Al Mathews

[00:34:09] sits up immediately pulls

[00:34:11] a like cigar from out of frame

[00:34:13] that's like pretty lit

[00:34:14] like he's just had a lit cigar there with him

[00:34:16] I think his best

[00:34:17] I feel like one of my

[00:34:18] I think one of my favorite little moments in Aliens

[00:34:20] is when she

[00:34:21] she uses the power lifter

[00:34:23] and it's super cool

[00:34:24] you know and she's like

[00:34:25] she's like

[00:34:26] I want it

[00:34:27] and he goes like

[00:34:28] ha ha ha ha

[00:34:29] Bay 12 please

[00:34:30] he does actually give an answer

[00:34:32] if you can put it in bay 12 that would be great

[00:34:34] like

[00:34:35] I love that guy

[00:34:36] he's so

[00:34:37] so good

[00:34:38] it's such a cheeseball role

[00:34:40] like the drill sergeant

[00:34:41] you know and like that way

[00:34:43] he wakes up

[00:34:44] he's got a cigar

[00:34:45] and he's like

[00:34:46] marine life is the best life

[00:34:47] we're all skillets

[00:34:48] in the you know

[00:34:49] ham sandwich

[00:34:50] like I don't know

[00:34:51] he's saying all this nonsense

[00:34:52] and he seems like to love it

[00:34:54] he really likes to be a space marine

[00:34:56] but there is this thing

[00:34:57] he's so genuine

[00:34:58] talk about Cameron

[00:34:59] it's a sweetie pie

[00:35:00] and how much this movie is obsessed with process

[00:35:02] and not just the process of them

[00:35:03] like trying to fight the aliens

[00:35:04] but even just like

[00:35:05] the fact that he doesn't just have

[00:35:07] the laugh that then he goes bay 12

[00:35:09] like he lets the things play out in their entirety

[00:35:12] there's a great recurring thing in this movie

[00:35:14] when like Hicks makes these sort of like

[00:35:15] quiet jokes to Ripley

[00:35:17] that he always shows her laughing

[00:35:19] and you think about how rare it is in movies

[00:35:21] that characters laugh at each other

[00:35:23] but how many movies have jokes in there?

[00:35:25] especially in action movie or anything like one liners

[00:35:27] but this is a movie where they recognize that like

[00:35:29] oh he's a cool badass saying funny lines

[00:35:31] he's throwing out action movie one liners

[00:35:33] and Ripley's like I like that

[00:35:34] I'm a fan of this character

[00:35:35] you know

[00:35:36] well I think Ripley's also like

[00:35:37] she has a lot of laughs recently

[00:35:39] yeah

[00:35:40] it's just nice to be with people

[00:35:41] yeah it's nice to be with

[00:35:42] now so who's your favorite random marine

[00:35:44] do you have a favorite random marine marine

[00:35:46] oh yeah

[00:35:47] is it Vasquez

[00:35:48] is it?

[00:35:49] Vasquez is pretty great

[00:35:50] yeah

[00:35:51] what's your name?

[00:35:52] uh Jeanette Goldstein

[00:35:54] right

[00:35:55] one of the chosen people

[00:35:56] she is very much a Jew

[00:35:58] I like that about her

[00:35:59] I like her bandana

[00:36:00] bandana's very cool

[00:36:01] her first line's pretty great

[00:36:02] it's a Bill Paxton

[00:36:03] what is her first line?

[00:36:04] have you ever been mistaken for a man?

[00:36:06] she says no have you

[00:36:07] oh that's great

[00:36:08] it's wonderful

[00:36:09] kills it

[00:36:10] love watching her do pull ups

[00:36:11] she does great pull ups

[00:36:12] she's got the maybe the biggest gun

[00:36:14] she's got that like rig

[00:36:15] the smart gun

[00:36:16] you know where she has to sort of like

[00:36:17] anchor it to her like

[00:36:18] hips because it's like heavy

[00:36:20] it's a steady camp

[00:36:21] it's a steady camp

[00:36:22] yeah and they put a chain gun on it

[00:36:24] and yeah like she has to sort of

[00:36:25] like swing it around

[00:36:27] and it's fused to her body

[00:36:29] yeah they call it the smart gun

[00:36:30] it's the fucking coolest thing

[00:36:31] that's ever been in a movie

[00:36:32] I don't know if you guys

[00:36:33] have ever heard of Star Trek the next generation

[00:36:35] uh yes

[00:36:36] that came out the year after Aliens

[00:36:39] Aliens is 86 and Star Trek the next generation

[00:36:41] is 87

[00:36:42] and they were gonna have a character

[00:36:44] called Macha Hernandez

[00:36:46] that was a rip off of this character

[00:36:48] that we are talking about

[00:36:49] yeah Jean-École Estine's scare baskets

[00:36:51] like they were just like

[00:36:52] we need a cool like Latin type

[00:36:54] you know the Latina like who's tough

[00:36:57] and then instead they cast

[00:36:59] Denise Crosby and they called her Tasha Yar

[00:37:01] gosh

[00:37:02] who's like very blonde and very

[00:37:03] she has a teardrop tattoo

[00:37:05] she does

[00:37:06] I love that

[00:37:07] it is interesting this movie like plays

[00:37:09] it is funny that Jean-École Estine

[00:37:10] is in real life this like lovely

[00:37:12] Jewish mama type

[00:37:14] who owns a company that sells

[00:37:16] big bras

[00:37:17] she sells big bras

[00:37:18] oh I didn't know that

[00:37:19] that's important

[00:37:20] yeah oh yeah

[00:37:21] because she's got big boobs

[00:37:23] and she needs big bras for them

[00:37:25] yeah yeah

[00:37:26] and they're expensive and they're hard to find

[00:37:28] everyone's always like my back

[00:37:29] it's called Jeanette bras

[00:37:31] and you guys want

[00:37:32] why wouldn't it be

[00:37:33] sure it's a good name

[00:37:34] and do you guys want to know the slogan is

[00:37:36] what

[00:37:37] alphabet starts at D

[00:37:39] it's nice

[00:37:40] Jeanette

[00:37:41] Jeanette

[00:37:42] it's just a nice joke

[00:37:43] it's just

[00:37:44] Jeanette 100 common points Jeanette

[00:37:46] this was her first movie she was a theater actress

[00:37:49] jeez Louise

[00:37:50] you really

[00:37:52] got me going with

[00:37:53] by picking Vasquez here

[00:37:54] oh I love her

[00:37:55] I love her too she's great

[00:37:57] I remember being stunned

[00:37:59] she also intermitted her to

[00:38:00] she plays John Connors Foster mom

[00:38:02] as John Connors Foster mom

[00:38:03] which I think is much closer to who she is in real life

[00:38:05] and then in Titanic

[00:38:06] she plays an Irish mama

[00:38:08] who reads to her kids

[00:38:10] and then like they die in the bed

[00:38:11] when the water goes around them

[00:38:13] I always forget that's her

[00:38:14] and that's also her like he would get her back

[00:38:16] and she would always be

[00:38:18] you guys should listen to Matt Gorley's podcast

[00:38:20] I was there too he interviewed her

[00:38:21] and she's very funny about all of it

[00:38:22] and she's like

[00:38:23] he would call her up and he'd be like

[00:38:24] this time you're Puerto Rican

[00:38:25] this time you're Irish

[00:38:26] like anyway

[00:38:27] I listened to the Riko Ross episode

[00:38:29] when I was there too

[00:38:30] it was Frost

[00:38:31] oh yeah right

[00:38:32] yeah it talks about his Arturian Poon Tang

[00:38:34] yeah that's the

[00:38:36] he doesn't do a lot Frost

[00:38:38] but he's he

[00:38:39] that was a very funny podcast

[00:38:40] it's a good episode

[00:38:41] yeah I mean he was there on set a lot

[00:38:42] so he had a lot of good stories

[00:38:43] I was there too

[00:38:44] a great podcast

[00:38:45] a big fan

[00:38:47] I'm you know

[00:38:48] I love Vazquez

[00:38:50] I'm a little partial to Hudson

[00:38:51] Hudson's obviously kind of like an archetypal

[00:38:53] Griffin character

[00:38:54] very much so

[00:38:55] he's very much in the wheelhouse

[00:38:56] of what I like

[00:38:57] at a movie character

[00:38:58] Bill Baxon's in the Terminator

[00:38:59] I assume you noticed him

[00:39:00] yeah when he's

[00:39:01] if you just watched the Terminator

[00:39:03] he hadn't been in anything right

[00:39:05] or had he been in near dark

[00:39:07] I'm looking it up

[00:39:08] okay

[00:39:10] I love Hudson

[00:39:11] I love the arc of Hudson

[00:39:13] I love that Hudson is like this

[00:39:15] like

[00:39:16] his arc is a deconstruction

[00:39:18] of Mckismo

[00:39:19] absolutely

[00:39:20] you know it's like

[00:39:21] that's what I love about him too

[00:39:22] it's just bravado and then

[00:39:23] just immediately crumbles

[00:39:24] and then he becomes someone

[00:39:25] that I relate to

[00:39:26] very quickly too

[00:39:27] yeah

[00:39:28] he I guess he's like

[00:39:29] the type you imagine

[00:39:30] it's sort of like

[00:39:31] the Vietnam like squatty

[00:39:33] who's just like

[00:39:34] this is gonna be great right

[00:39:35] we're gonna like shoot our guns

[00:39:36] and blow up a bunch of bugs

[00:39:37] bug hunt

[00:39:38] right

[00:39:39] doing a bug hunt

[00:39:40] what are you doing my friends

[00:39:41] going on a bug hunt

[00:39:42] here's what I like about the movie

[00:39:44] and it's the only thing

[00:39:45] I like about everything else

[00:39:46] I despise

[00:39:47] yeah bad movie

[00:39:48] we all agree on this

[00:39:49] right bad movie

[00:39:50] is that like you don't know

[00:39:51] if there are aliens

[00:39:53] or not

[00:39:54] you know what I mean

[00:39:55] they're all humans

[00:39:56] and we seem to

[00:39:57] we've scanned hundreds of worlds

[00:39:58] or something

[00:39:59] and then sogerni weaver

[00:40:00] they're like why'd you blow up

[00:40:01] your fucking freighter

[00:40:02] and by the way

[00:40:03] they can't let it

[00:40:04] it's like 90 years ago

[00:40:05] and they can't let her go

[00:40:06] for blowing up the freighter

[00:40:07] stupid

[00:40:08] and stupid

[00:40:09] and she's like well there was an alien on board

[00:40:11] and they're like I don't know what an alien

[00:40:12] I don't know about that

[00:40:13] but then when the marines are being trained

[00:40:15] for like we're gonna drop on this planet

[00:40:17] there might be an alien out there

[00:40:18] they're like oh yeah bug hunt

[00:40:20] huh

[00:40:21] like let's go kill some

[00:40:22] so our aliens are not

[00:40:23] we're going to brag about fucking an arturian

[00:40:25] what's going on

[00:40:26] I don't know

[00:40:27] I just love that it's

[00:40:29] it's like a casual

[00:40:30] like we don't

[00:40:31] it's not trying too hard to

[00:40:32] uh

[00:40:33] like

[00:40:34] explain things to us

[00:40:35] yes which I love

[00:40:36] yeah

[00:40:37] but he explains a lot of stuff

[00:40:39] there's a lot of showing not telling in this movie

[00:40:41] they explain the things

[00:40:43] you need to know by showing you how they work

[00:40:45] you know

[00:40:47] god this movie is the best

[00:40:49] but even just like the Hudson arc

[00:40:51] the first half of the movie before

[00:40:53] he comes face to face with the aliens

[00:40:55] his hair is all spiked up

[00:40:57] and it's all the fucking jokes

[00:40:58] and he's making fun of Vasquez and whatever

[00:41:00] although he does freak out when Bishop does the knife trick on him

[00:41:02] yeah

[00:41:03] which doesn't like that

[00:41:04] we get the first little

[00:41:05] you know glimpse of them cracking the armor

[00:41:06] Vasquez burns him pretty bad when she says that

[00:41:08] he's also never been mistaken for a man

[00:41:10] yeah

[00:41:11] that was a pretty good burn

[00:41:12] yeah but that's good character build

[00:41:13] you see the little like

[00:41:14] ooh there's a little

[00:41:15] there's a little dent there

[00:41:16] rubbing his fingers in your face

[00:41:17] it's not good

[00:41:18] it's my impression of Michael Shannon

[00:41:19] in the night before

[00:41:20] my hair performance in 2015

[00:41:21] he does this weird thing with his two fingers

[00:41:22] and they have this weird sound effect

[00:41:24] um

[00:41:25] they

[00:41:26] great performance

[00:41:27] my favorite performance was in 2016

[00:41:28] when he was in that picture

[00:41:29] of him in a Hawaiian shirt

[00:41:30] and jeans shorts

[00:41:31] he is going to get nominated for that right

[00:41:33] oh yeah he's a front runner

[00:41:34] for that picture

[00:41:35] Michael Shannon thoughts

[00:41:36] we're big Shannon fans on this

[00:41:37] oh I love him

[00:41:38] he's a big Chicago

[00:41:39] I mean he lives there

[00:41:40] he's a big Chicago

[00:41:41] he's one of the biggest Chicago

[00:41:42] he's like

[00:41:43] well he's like one of our celebs

[00:41:45] that we get to be like

[00:41:46] oh he's

[00:41:47] because he's

[00:41:48] local boy made this

[00:41:49] he's like a Steppenwolf guy

[00:41:50] was he in like

[00:41:51] he owns a theater

[00:41:52] called Red Orchid

[00:41:53] I believe

[00:41:54] should have called a big Chicago

[00:41:55] he was like a Tracy Letts guy

[00:41:56] right

[00:41:57] and he was like that whole

[00:41:58] yeah

[00:41:59] and he's still

[00:42:00] Michael Shannon's deep dish theater

[00:42:01] what if it's a dinner theater

[00:42:04] I've heard of Red Orchid

[00:42:06] it very well maybe

[00:42:07] hey I'm Michael Shannon

[00:42:08] come get a spaghetti

[00:42:09] I haven't been

[00:42:10] I think they do serious plays

[00:42:11] but a nice big dinner

[00:42:12] they get a spaghetti

[00:42:14] and come see Oklahoma

[00:42:15] if you get the lasagna

[00:42:16] they give you another lasagna in a take home

[00:42:18] like yeah

[00:42:19] in the take home box

[00:42:20] I just like the idea of it being

[00:42:22] a musical dinner theater review

[00:42:24] he like would

[00:42:26] it's like almost like he would

[00:42:27] yeah

[00:42:28] but people see him

[00:42:29] he's like the person

[00:42:30] you're like

[00:42:31] oh I saw Michael Shannon

[00:42:32] Shannon around town

[00:42:33] talk about seeing him

[00:42:34] he was the original burger

[00:42:35] report

[00:42:36] he was the original burger

[00:42:37] report

[00:42:38] I have seen him but he was not eating

[00:42:39] do you have a burger for us

[00:42:41] if you do don't

[00:42:42] no I

[00:42:43] no it's fine if you don't

[00:42:44] that's fine

[00:42:45] I don't

[00:42:46] if you do

[00:42:47] one time I saw Michael Shannon

[00:42:48] not eating a burger

[00:42:49] that's pretty good

[00:42:50] it's no burger report

[00:42:51] post exercise

[00:42:52] he was in workout clothes

[00:42:53] so we know he exercises

[00:42:54] so he was buffing up for Zod

[00:42:56] or something like that

[00:42:57] for 99 Homes

[00:42:58] he was jacked in that movie

[00:42:59] Fran I'll say this to you

[00:43:01] we're new friends

[00:43:02] and I think things are going off to a great start

[00:43:03] we're two friends

[00:43:04] we're two friends

[00:43:05] but you guys are new friends

[00:43:06] we are new friends

[00:43:07] hashtag it

[00:43:09] but

[00:43:10] I'm not angry at you for not having a burger

[00:43:12] report of course

[00:43:13] I would never be angry at you for that

[00:43:14] yeah

[00:43:15] that haven't been said Fran

[00:43:16] I swear to God

[00:43:17] if you have a burger report

[00:43:18] and you're holding out on us

[00:43:19] I'm gonna be fucking

[00:43:20] he's gonna be mad

[00:43:21] he's gonna be real mad

[00:43:22] I wanted to have one so bad

[00:43:23] that's fine

[00:43:24] if you have an orange

[00:43:25] Fran it's fine

[00:43:26] my eyes have been peeled for celebs

[00:43:27] in Chicago

[00:43:28] we have two

[00:43:29] that's fine

[00:43:30] who's the other one

[00:43:31] himself Michael Shannon

[00:43:32] oh we got a Joan Cusack's around

[00:43:33] oh

[00:43:34] lover

[00:43:35] love big

[00:43:36] can you imagine how great it would be

[00:43:37] to watch Joanie to burger

[00:43:38] oh jeezie Joanie

[00:43:39] she must eat a burger so well

[00:43:40] I just said jeezie Joanie

[00:43:41] jeezie Joanie

[00:43:43] I love Joan Cusack

[00:43:44] from now on

[00:43:45] we have to call Michael Shannon

[00:43:46] Big Chicago

[00:43:47] anytime he comes up on this podcast

[00:43:50] Big Chicago himself

[00:43:51] Malcolm is a Chicago guy

[00:43:52] I guess he doesn't live there anymore though

[00:43:54] he started out in Chicago

[00:43:55] he lives in like the south of France now

[00:43:56] right

[00:43:57] he's doing well

[00:43:58] I think he does

[00:43:59] he's doing well

[00:44:00] he's not at AMA

[00:44:01] he answers in all caps

[00:44:02] which I love

[00:44:04] now I have to read that

[00:44:05] oh it's very good

[00:44:06] but it's also just like

[00:44:07] man you just made the choice

[00:44:08] to keep these on

[00:44:09] he's in a movie

[00:44:10] that I'm very excited

[00:44:12] to see which is

[00:44:13] I'm calling it dirty people

[00:44:14] the movie

[00:44:15] it's actually called deep water horizon

[00:44:16] but

[00:44:17] have you seen the posters

[00:44:18] for deep water horizon

[00:44:19] no I haven't

[00:44:20] it's Walberg

[00:44:21] Gina Rodriguez

[00:44:22] I just knew that it was Walberg

[00:44:23] Walberg Gina Rodriguez

[00:44:24] Kurt Russell

[00:44:25] Jane the Virgin

[00:44:26] Gina Rodriguez

[00:44:27] and John Malkovich

[00:44:28] the posters are just

[00:44:29] like faces

[00:44:30] they're just like

[00:44:31] like they look

[00:44:32] like they are really

[00:44:33] stressed out

[00:44:34] and they're covered in oil

[00:44:35] it's like individual character posters

[00:44:36] and each one is just

[00:44:37] just a dirty old face

[00:44:39] a dirty old face

[00:44:40] I'm gonna find

[00:44:41] I had a high school friend

[00:44:42] who just like loved

[00:44:43] John Malkovich

[00:44:44] and that was like his

[00:44:45] actor that he loved

[00:44:46] but anytime

[00:44:47] John Malkovich was in a new movie

[00:44:48] he'd be like

[00:44:49] loves that he's getting work

[00:44:50] and I was like

[00:44:51] yeah it's not hard for him

[00:44:52] to get work

[00:44:53] Dylna Bryan as well

[00:44:54] Dirty Pie

[00:44:55] Dirty Face Dylan

[00:44:56] Dirty Face Jane

[00:44:57] oh Jane

[00:44:58] she looks like

[00:44:59] she is about to cry

[00:45:00] yeah

[00:45:01] like it looks like the

[00:45:02] poster photographer

[00:45:03] I think something bad happened

[00:45:04] in that movie

[00:45:05] like right before he took the picture

[00:45:07] picture cargo

[00:45:09] maybe the best one

[00:45:10] is Dirty Face John

[00:45:11] oh my god

[00:45:12] yeah he's good

[00:45:13] he looks great

[00:45:14] he looks like he's like

[00:45:15] describing a meatball maybe

[00:45:17] like sort of puckering his lips

[00:45:18] like he's describing

[00:45:21] a meatball

[00:45:23] I'm having fun with this

[00:45:25] there's Kurt

[00:45:26] oh wow

[00:45:27] he's got a dirty mustache

[00:45:28] he's got a dirty mustache

[00:45:29] he looks pretty good

[00:45:30] he looked real good

[00:45:31] he doesn't look that different

[00:45:32] from 20 years ago

[00:45:33] don't show me Walberg

[00:45:34] there's gotta be some surprise

[00:45:35] to this for me

[00:45:36] okay

[00:45:37] it's a good call I won't show you

[00:45:38] Walberg

[00:45:39] I'll give you a hint though

[00:45:40] he's dirty

[00:45:41] black and white dirty

[00:45:42] alright so

[00:45:43] let's talk about the motion picture

[00:45:44] aliens from 1986

[00:45:45] what's that now

[00:45:46] aliens

[00:45:47] aliens

[00:45:48] aliens

[00:45:49] who's your favorite

[00:45:50] who's my favorite

[00:45:51] ooh that's it

[00:45:52] I think it's A-Pone

[00:45:53] Bishop doesn't count

[00:45:54] I assume because he's my favorite

[00:45:56] not a marine

[00:45:57] Bishop right

[00:45:58] I just

[00:45:59] I love him

[00:46:00] because I love

[00:46:01] that the movie is immediately like

[00:46:03] to the audience

[00:46:04] we know

[00:46:05] you know about the robot trick

[00:46:07] we know

[00:46:08] you saw Ailey and we know about the

[00:46:09] you know about the robot trick

[00:46:10] we're not gonna pull the robot trick

[00:46:12] he's a robot

[00:46:13] we're gonna give it to you rough front

[00:46:14] and I just

[00:46:16] and now it's about prejudice

[00:46:17] it's about Ripley

[00:46:18] it's about prejudice

[00:46:19] but you get the prejudice

[00:46:20] this isn't like a movie where

[00:46:21] you're like stirred by the

[00:46:22] bishop

[00:46:23] no no no

[00:46:24] I like the idea

[00:46:25] he's a robot who fucking cares

[00:46:26] that's the thing

[00:46:27] I like the idea that

[00:46:28] the movie like has this sort of

[00:46:30] sub thread

[00:46:31] of him proving himself to Ripley

[00:46:33] and at the end

[00:46:34] after he gets torn in two

[00:46:35] and he's like done all

[00:46:36] he's like crawls through the shafts

[00:46:37] and he's like you know

[00:46:39] covered in milk blood

[00:46:40] Ripley's sort of like

[00:46:43] you're right Bishop

[00:46:44] like he's finally made it

[00:46:46] you're not half bad

[00:46:48] and I love

[00:46:50] he just seems like

[00:46:51] when they're chatting early on

[00:46:53] in the movie and like

[00:46:55] Paul Reiser again

[00:46:56] he's such a wonderful slime ball

[00:46:57] oh he's so good

[00:46:58] oh god I love him

[00:46:59] I love his dumb collar

[00:47:01] he has like a

[00:47:02] you know like future clothes

[00:47:03] with a weird collar

[00:47:04] when he's like

[00:47:06] oh I'm so sorry

[00:47:07] yeah Ripley had a bad experience

[00:47:09] of the robot

[00:47:10] and Bishop's just like

[00:47:11] oh no

[00:47:12] oh I'm so sorry

[00:47:13] what happened

[00:47:14] like so understanding

[00:47:15] even though like

[00:47:16] he should just be like

[00:47:17] well we're not all the same

[00:47:18] Ripley just because one robot

[00:47:20] busted your head open

[00:47:21] or whatever

[00:47:23] I have tried to cram a magazine into your mouth

[00:47:25] which he does

[00:47:26] he in home does

[00:47:27] I have long said

[00:47:28] yeah love Bishop

[00:47:29] the thing I think is

[00:47:30] he's such a sweet guy

[00:47:31] hardest to play

[00:47:32] is a decent

[00:47:34] uncomplicated person

[00:47:36] good right

[00:47:37] which is sort of what a robot should be

[00:47:39] right yeah yeah

[00:47:40] but when I see someone

[00:47:41] give a good performance

[00:47:42] as a decent uncomplicated person

[00:47:43] because there's nothing

[00:47:44] to like hold on to

[00:47:45] and like sink your teeth into

[00:47:46] because it's hard to do that

[00:47:47] and not become like saintly

[00:47:49] to actually have like

[00:47:51] grounding and coloring

[00:47:52] as a person

[00:47:53] and feel three dimensional

[00:47:54] but play someone who is uncomplicated

[00:47:56] kind of selfless

[00:47:57] and just like consider it

[00:47:59] is like really fucking difficult

[00:48:01] because actors are drawn towards like

[00:48:02] oh the dark side

[00:48:03] and the struggle

[00:48:04] and what's their pain

[00:48:05] and like this and that

[00:48:06] um that's like the thing

[00:48:07] that people like to dig into

[00:48:09] and like Bishop is like

[00:48:10] such a perfect example

[00:48:11] of just like this very clean

[00:48:13] like efficient

[00:48:15] honest

[00:48:16] decent performance

[00:48:17] of someone who is like

[00:48:18] hated

[00:48:19] and understands why everyone

[00:48:21] hates him

[00:48:22] and doesn't fight it

[00:48:23] right right

[00:48:24] and it's just like

[00:48:25] I'm just gonna keep on being good

[00:48:26] and hope

[00:48:27] if you one day want to start liking

[00:48:28] that's fine

[00:48:29] it's like there's a fourth

[00:48:30] lot of robotics where he can't

[00:48:31] even be mean to people

[00:48:32] like he's not even allowed

[00:48:33] to be rude

[00:48:34] he's such a good guy

[00:48:35] although he does

[00:48:36] like do the knife trick

[00:48:37] with Bill Paxton

[00:48:38] even though Bill Paxton is like

[00:48:39] I don't want to do that

[00:48:40] yeah

[00:48:41] and you would think he'd be like

[00:48:42] he's trying to blend in

[00:48:43] with the other guys

[00:48:44] and he's like well if they make fun

[00:48:45] of this guy

[00:48:46] I should make fun of this guy

[00:48:47] we should say he's played by Lance

[00:48:48] Henrickson

[00:48:49] who is so wonderful in The Terminator

[00:48:50] for ten minutes

[00:48:52] and then Piranha to the Spawning

[00:48:53] he's in Piranha to the Spawning

[00:48:54] he was Cameron's early muse

[00:48:56] I think this is the last movie

[00:48:57] they make together

[00:48:59] is he not in the abyss

[00:49:01] I haven't seen one of his films

[00:49:02] well I know what we're gonna find out

[00:49:04] well I'm not sure what we're gonna find out

[00:49:06] but he

[00:49:07] I watching this

[00:49:08] his face has like transformed

[00:49:10] between these three movies

[00:49:12] where he's got these really deep lines

[00:49:14] he's got quite a face

[00:49:15] yeah

[00:49:16] and he's got a beautiful face

[00:49:17] he has these like two deep lines

[00:49:18] right under his eyes

[00:49:20] he's like very bizarre

[00:49:21] specific wrinkles

[00:49:23] and then he's got these like

[00:49:25] you know sort of like hollowed

[00:49:26] like cheekbones

[00:49:28] and then these big like soulful eyes

[00:49:29] and his hair's got this weird flip to it

[00:49:32] and then he's wearing like this onesie

[00:49:33] like this green point

[00:49:35] jumper

[00:49:36] you know

[00:49:37] yeah yeah yeah

[00:49:38] and he's just like he's got

[00:49:39] such a bizarre look in this film

[00:49:41] he does

[00:49:42] because

[00:49:43] and his hair is a little

[00:49:44] you know he's got sort of odd hair

[00:49:45] that's what I was saying

[00:49:46] he's got a weird flip

[00:49:47] he's almost got the like

[00:49:48] Nicholas Cage Bangkok dangerous thing going on

[00:49:50] he's got the Nicholas Cage

[00:49:51] receding hairline

[00:49:52] but without the

[00:49:53] central piece that they then attached

[00:49:55] to Nicholas Cage's head

[00:49:56] in so many movies

[00:49:57] but the hair

[00:49:58] an interesting look for a robot

[00:49:59] it is an interesting look for a robot

[00:50:00] because usually in the media

[00:50:02] the idea is that the robot looks perfect

[00:50:04] they create a perfect human space

[00:50:06] or what I love about

[00:50:07] well like fastbender

[00:50:08] and permethias

[00:50:09] but what I love about Ian Holm

[00:50:10] and Alien

[00:50:11] is that Ian Holm literally looks

[00:50:12] especially in that movie

[00:50:13] like a smaller cube

[00:50:15] on a bigger cube

[00:50:16] like he's a very cute boy

[00:50:17] like a Lego

[00:50:18] man he's not even fat

[00:50:19] he's just like a bit

[00:50:20] like a Lego

[00:50:21] and when he's an alien

[00:50:22] you're like oh yeah

[00:50:23] right I should have seen that

[00:50:24] come on of course he's an alien

[00:50:25] of course he's got marbles for guts

[00:50:26] but Lance Henriksen is like

[00:50:28] I mean like marble guts

[00:50:29] oh it's the marble guts are

[00:50:31] it's something so good

[00:50:32] yep he's got this like very

[00:50:34] worn face

[00:50:35] but it's also very symmetrical

[00:50:36] at how worn it is

[00:50:37] so it looks designed

[00:50:39] even though it's not designed

[00:50:40] to be like immaculate

[00:50:42] you know it's like this very

[00:50:43] interesting balance

[00:50:45] and he is

[00:50:46] there's something very soulful

[00:50:47] about him

[00:50:48] and especially in a film

[00:50:49] where immediately everyone's

[00:50:50] like fuck you Bishop

[00:50:51] right fuck you Bishop

[00:50:52] Ripley who is not nice to

[00:50:54] anybody

[00:50:55] she's kinda nice to

[00:50:57] ball riser

[00:50:58] I guess she's sort of grudging

[00:50:59] towards him

[00:51:00] she's mean to everyone else

[00:51:01] she's really mean to Bishop

[00:51:02] I mean I guess the movie

[00:51:04] is trying to not just be like

[00:51:06] we know you know the robot twist

[00:51:07] I suppose it is

[00:51:08] maybe planting a seed

[00:51:09] like oh maybe the robot will be bad again

[00:51:11] but you know he's not going to be bad

[00:51:13] yeah

[00:51:14] I also love

[00:51:15] what's his name

[00:51:16] fuck

[00:51:17] Gorman

[00:51:18] yeah

[00:51:19] played by

[00:51:20] William Hope

[00:51:21] who is the

[00:51:23] you know the commanding officer

[00:51:24] who flows it

[00:51:25] he's like only done like two missions

[00:51:26] he's only done like simulated

[00:51:28] landings or what

[00:51:29] including this one

[00:51:30] oh yeah he's got such a great

[00:51:32] thousand yards stare

[00:51:34] of horror

[00:51:35] like when he realizes

[00:51:36] things are going wrong

[00:51:37] and I just

[00:51:39] he's well okay

[00:51:40] I don't know that guy

[00:51:41] is he in other movies

[00:51:42] like I've never really

[00:51:43] I don't know him

[00:51:44] yeah

[00:51:45] it's great

[00:51:46] and then

[00:51:47] it's my favorite

[00:51:48] we've gotten through

[00:51:49] ha ha ha ha

[00:51:50] we've got the main characters

[00:51:51] so we should talk about the other two big ones

[00:51:52] we should talk about Hicks and Newt

[00:51:53] Hicks is a cutie

[00:51:54] yeah I mean Hicks is a cutie

[00:51:56] Mikey Bean also in the terms

[00:51:58] with a real sense of like

[00:52:00] calm and centeredness

[00:52:01] he didn't have in Terminator

[00:52:02] you know

[00:52:03] I like him so much more than this

[00:52:04] oh yeah

[00:52:05] he's so chill in this

[00:52:07] he's so happy to

[00:52:09] just as an actor and as a character

[00:52:11] see the Florida Sigourney

[00:52:13] like to Sigourney

[00:52:14] well that's the beautiful thing about this movie

[00:52:16] for me is that like

[00:52:17] he's just helping out

[00:52:18] but it's always cited as sort of this

[00:52:20] like cornerstone of feminist genre

[00:52:22] cinema and the thing that I think

[00:52:24] is so beautiful about it is

[00:52:26] the men in the film who are heroic

[00:52:28] are the men who listen to the women

[00:52:30] like Bishop and Hicks

[00:52:32] prove themselves to be like worthy allies

[00:52:34] because they go like

[00:52:35] you should listen to her

[00:52:36] you seem to know what you're talking about

[00:52:38] right

[00:52:39] it's not just like the other guys like

[00:52:41] it's fine we're bug hun

[00:52:42] what's the problem

[00:52:43] they don't go in there

[00:52:44] and kill the bug

[00:52:45] they never try to take charge

[00:52:46] you know

[00:52:47] they're like they're not

[00:52:48] there's no aliens

[00:52:49] right and they're not a marine

[00:52:51] so you're just here

[00:52:53] well everyone else is

[00:52:54] you must not be here for any reason at all

[00:52:56] I shouldn't listen to you

[00:52:57] everyone else is doubting her

[00:52:59] and you feel like even anyone who believed her

[00:53:01] in a world

[00:53:02] she was like

[00:53:03] that planet's bad

[00:53:04] and they're like it's fine

[00:53:05] oh what's this

[00:53:06] oh it seems like there's a problem with that planet

[00:53:08] it's so quick between when she goes

[00:53:10] it's bad there

[00:53:11] and then they're like

[00:53:12] oh it is bad there

[00:53:13] no it's totally

[00:53:14] it's within five minutes

[00:53:15] my phone's buzzing

[00:53:17] that's the one difference

[00:53:18] like the one major story telling difference

[00:53:20] between

[00:53:21] the theatrical and the directors

[00:53:23] is the directors cuts out the sequence

[00:53:25] with Newt and her family

[00:53:26] on the base

[00:53:28] so we never see it operating

[00:53:30] you mean the theatrical cuts that out

[00:53:32] the theatrical cuts that out

[00:53:33] right you said the director cuts that out

[00:53:34] sorry sorry sorry

[00:53:35] the theatrical cuts that out

[00:53:36] so we never see the base until they land

[00:53:38] so we just hear that

[00:53:39] no there's terraformers there

[00:53:40] yeah anyway

[00:53:41] it's going bad

[00:53:42] oh we gotta go

[00:53:43] it's all going fine

[00:53:44] oh I just heard it's going bad

[00:53:45] you don't get the same sense that

[00:53:47] like things turned while she was there

[00:53:49] because you don't see it

[00:53:50] like it doesn't register in the same way

[00:53:51] whereas in the director's cut

[00:53:52] which I love

[00:53:53] she's like

[00:53:54] you should get people out of there

[00:53:55] and they're like

[00:53:56] go shut the fuck up

[00:53:57] and then they're like

[00:53:58] okay we need to send you

[00:53:59] to get people out

[00:54:00] no they tell that

[00:54:01] and then she goes to that room

[00:54:02] where they like project a park bench

[00:54:04] like right you know

[00:54:05] and then they're like

[00:54:06] tell her about her dead daughter

[00:54:07] they tell her about her dead daughter

[00:54:08] and they say she died aged like 60

[00:54:10] something and they show her a picture

[00:54:11] of Sigourney Weaver

[00:54:12] aged to look like 190 years old

[00:54:14] like the oldest looking

[00:54:16] Sigourney Weaver possible

[00:54:18] well Amazon trivia

[00:54:20] X-ray

[00:54:21] oh

[00:54:22] Fran uses X-ray

[00:54:23] she confesses to me

[00:54:24] great platform

[00:54:25] I like X-ray

[00:54:26] I love it

[00:54:27] great company

[00:54:29] that's a picture of

[00:54:30] Sigourney Weaver's mother

[00:54:31] is it

[00:54:32] that's what they said yeah

[00:54:34] so I'm wrong

[00:54:35] they had an age

[00:54:36] you're right 119 year old

[00:54:38] congrats to her

[00:54:39] wow real

[00:54:40] who is Sigourney's mother

[00:54:41] Sigourney's father was the president

[00:54:43] Jesus sorry for asking Fran

[00:54:45] I just told you she's in the picture

[00:54:47] Sigourney's father was the president of NBC

[00:54:49] I know

[00:54:51] okay her mother was Elizabeth Inglis

[00:54:54] an actress

[00:54:55] and her dad was indeed

[00:54:57] an NBC TV executive

[00:54:58] Sylvester Weaver

[00:54:59] Sylvester Weaver

[00:55:00] she was born Susan Weaver

[00:55:02] she was born Susan Weaver

[00:55:03] and she uses the name

[00:55:04] Sigourney after a minor character

[00:55:06] in the great Gatsby

[00:55:07] Sigourney Howard

[00:55:09] cool

[00:55:10] that is cool

[00:55:11] I don't know who that minor character is

[00:55:13] that must be like very minor

[00:55:14] there's only like six characters in that book

[00:55:16] it's really only four

[00:55:17] yeah I mean the baby I guess

[00:55:20] the billboard is a character too

[00:55:21] oh yeah that fucking light

[00:55:22] oh the eyes yeah

[00:55:23] I don't know if I'm betraying trust here

[00:55:25] but I'm gonna share this just because it's too fucking cool

[00:55:27] not to share

[00:55:29] I worked on political animals

[00:55:31] which was

[00:55:32] SW

[00:55:33] yes a political drama

[00:55:35] no scenes with her I was in very very separate plot lines

[00:55:37] you had a bunch of scenes with

[00:55:38] MOTZARELL

[00:55:40] Carla Gugino yeah I played her assistant on the show

[00:55:42] yeah big buffalo mozzarella Carla

[00:55:44] yes

[00:55:45] but on the call she

[00:55:46] did you listen to the episode in which I compared

[00:55:48] Carla Gugino to a very nice mozzarella

[00:55:51] I think so

[00:55:52] it's the latest podcast

[00:55:53] you should listen to it

[00:55:54] oh yeah yeah I did

[00:55:55] but it feels like an unfamiliar joke to me

[00:55:56] he wanted Obi for that coming

[00:55:57] I wanted Obi for that one yeah it was good thank you

[00:56:00] on the call sheet which is like the sheet they give out every day

[00:56:02] that says like what scenes are being shot

[00:56:03] which actors are in it whatever

[00:56:04] people know what a call sheet is

[00:56:05] okay okay

[00:56:06] were you number one on the call sheet or two

[00:56:07] I was not I was number 75

[00:56:08] great

[00:56:09] my name fucking

[00:56:11] keep on thinking it's Rick but it's not that's the other one

[00:56:13] Rick the intern where are you called Rick on political animals

[00:56:15] Rusty assistant I was Rusty assistant

[00:56:16] they were very similar it was Rick the intern and Rusty assistant

[00:56:18] that was my whole niche for all

[00:56:19] you were on political animals go on

[00:56:21] Sigourney Weaver SW obviously number one on the call sheet

[00:56:24] they did not put her real name on the call sheet

[00:56:26] really so like an obvious pseudonym

[00:56:29] well you want to hear what her fucking badass pseudonym was

[00:56:31] go ahead and I don't know if I'm putting on blast here

[00:56:33] but I want to believe that maybe she switches it up

[00:56:36] but at the time it was like the coolest fucking thing

[00:56:38] her pseudonym on the on the call sheet

[00:56:41] was Diana Prince which is Wonder Woman's

[00:56:44] secret identity and it was like yeah

[00:56:47] yeah we already draw that connection

[00:56:49] she would have been a good yes

[00:56:51] yeah yes she would have

[00:56:53] I just thought it was so cool this morning we were like

[00:56:55] hey just calling you Wonder Woman

[00:56:57] she's a god yeah opinions on

[00:57:01] let me give you some goddess walking among us mere mortal

[00:57:05] Sigourney Sigourney Sigourney we've got

[00:57:08] Sigour Ross Rooney Weaver had only been in

[00:57:11] only been in

[00:57:13] that's true

[00:57:16] great it's a good Ross Weaver

[00:57:21] no I get you

[00:57:23] she had been in any hall

[00:57:25] she's an alien

[00:57:27] then she makes a bunch of great movies

[00:57:30] you're living dangerously

[00:57:32] ghost buster oh pretty good

[00:57:34] that's about it

[00:57:36] a couple other not that good movies

[00:57:38] but then she's an aliens so she's still pretty

[00:57:40] alright so she's still pretty new

[00:57:42] like I mean she's a star or whatever but she hasn't made

[00:57:44] like working girl or gorillas in the midst

[00:57:46] like her like other oscarie movies

[00:57:48] you can argue that she was a star but she wasn't an icon yet

[00:57:51] yeah she had yet to transcend to like movie star

[00:57:54] like legendary movie star icon

[00:57:56] she's great in ghost busters

[00:57:58] I mean that's when I throw out like how boss

[00:58:00] Sigourney Weaver's career is

[00:58:02] is like the one movie where she took the

[00:58:04] thankless like love interest role was ghost busters

[00:58:06] you know like that was the one where she was

[00:58:08] like I'm just gonna like play the like

[00:58:10] the crush and like a boys game movie

[00:58:13] and it was ghost busters

[00:58:15] say it like that again

[00:58:16] ghost busters

[00:58:18] ghost busters

[00:58:20] how do we get on this musical guest

[00:58:22] ghost busters too

[00:58:24] oh bad musical guest

[00:58:26] skip it

[00:58:27] fast forward on the DVR

[00:58:28] and your host the real ghost busters

[00:58:31] alright

[00:58:35] what were we talking about, what were we talking about fam

[00:58:37] well sig I mean she's the best

[00:58:39] she's great in this movie

[00:58:40] hicks we were talking about hicks

[00:58:42] he listens to her, he's a hunk cause he listens to her

[00:58:44] he's a quiet hunk which is the best kind of hunk

[00:58:46] he's chill, he fucking knows when to hold back

[00:58:48] he knows when to give stage

[00:58:50] they flirt

[00:58:52] but you know

[00:58:53] but in like a nice non-threatening way

[00:58:55] couple grown ups

[00:58:56] especially when I like it when she's like

[00:58:58] come on you started this teach me how to use the gun

[00:59:00] like that's a good flirting scene

[00:59:02] where he's not coming on

[00:59:04] very strong and she's just like

[00:59:06] it's okay we can work for her for a second

[00:59:08] is aliens a better movie cause there's flirting

[00:59:10] yeah

[00:59:11] I think that yafikado

[00:59:13] and harry deans dance and get some real flirting done in alien

[00:59:15] so I mean you know

[00:59:17] don't forget about that

[00:59:19] yafikado is real sad when harry deans

[00:59:21] stand by the door

[00:59:23] the other thing I like

[00:59:25] about hicks

[00:59:27] there's some good flirting though

[00:59:29] I judge a movie by

[00:59:31] if the flirting is good

[00:59:33] alien 3 has a little flirting

[00:59:35] oh charlie dance and

[00:59:37] that's my favorite aspect of alien 3

[00:59:39] I think their relationship is really well

[00:59:41] she goes on a charlie dance

[00:59:43] that's fincher right

[00:59:45] it's fincher it's not good

[00:59:47] I sort of defend it too

[00:59:49] the quote and quote assembly cut which is like

[00:59:51] it's on the dvd and it's not officially

[00:59:53] his cut but it's something

[00:59:55] that he sort of expressed

[00:59:57] he has been like I will literally never

[00:59:59] look at alien 3 again

[01:00:01] it ruined me but they made

[01:00:03] a better cut of it

[01:00:05] that's closer to his first assembly before they came in

[01:00:07] and that is a pretty

[01:00:09] interesting movie alien 3 on its own

[01:00:11] like the sort of theatrical cut is

[01:00:13] tough to take it's a fucking weird

[01:00:15] movie though most of what I've heard about it

[01:00:17] is very weird it's very abrasive and it's dark

[01:00:19] and it's just

[01:00:21] set in this like absolutely

[01:00:23] grim location that is visually

[01:00:25] interesting but also really just

[01:00:27] grim and oppressive I went

[01:00:29] I guess because I knew we were going to talk about this I went down

[01:00:31] like sort of deep hole alien stuff in the last couple weeks

[01:00:33] on the internet and I was reading a lot

[01:00:35] of stuff on the internet

[01:00:37] I was reading a lot of stuff about like the whole evolution

[01:00:39] of the whole alien franchise and the idea

[01:00:41] one of the first stories that came in on alien 3

[01:00:43] had was like

[01:00:45] see where Jill's director was I forget who it was it was a New Zealand guy

[01:00:47] yeah it was a Vincent Ward

[01:00:49] yes it was

[01:00:51] great Vincent Ward who I also studied

[01:00:53] in my New Zealand cinema class

[01:00:55] which I took to flirt with

[01:00:57] a girl whose name I would really

[01:00:59] like to tell you guys because it's the most insane name

[01:01:01] in the world but it feels

[01:01:03] weird to say her name Diana Prince

[01:01:05] can you bleep it out Ben

[01:01:07] sure okay

[01:01:09] that was her name

[01:01:11] yeah I know I know they're laughing because

[01:01:13] her name is the name of a TV

[01:01:15] anyway I had a huge crush on her

[01:01:17] but please bleep that out

[01:01:19] that is the most on brand crush

[01:01:21] you could possibly have David

[01:01:23] isn't that crazy

[01:01:25] anyway yeah the guy who later made

[01:01:27] what dreams may come

[01:01:29] was originally going to make alien 3

[01:01:31] so this interesting idea that he expressed in this interview

[01:01:33] I read was that like

[01:01:35] the aliens the first

[01:01:37] all four alien films are directed by non-Americans

[01:01:39] true

[01:01:41] yeah Ridley's a Brit

[01:01:43] James is a connocturator

[01:01:45] I mean I shouldn't

[01:01:47] and then Vincent Ward was going to do

[01:01:49] the third one was New Zealander American came

[01:01:51] in in the fourth films of Frenchman is directed by frog

[01:01:53] and that movie is a catastrophe

[01:01:55] I can't watch

[01:01:57] but it was

[01:01:59] going to be have you seen aliens red alien

[01:02:01] action

[01:02:03] no I've just seen alien aliens and Prometheus

[01:02:05] I like Prometheus I'm a huge

[01:02:07] Prometheus I haven't seen it since it came out but

[01:02:09] I think it's interesting I think it's very interesting

[01:02:11] I don't know if I liked it but

[01:02:13] there's a lot of cool kind of stuff

[01:02:15] going on yeah I think we've talked about this

[01:02:17] certainly off maybe on Mike but

[01:02:19] it's a good movie if you lose the aliens

[01:02:21] yeah I'm a little

[01:02:23] Prometheus defender I'm like five six

[01:02:25] one twenty five

[01:02:27] yeah sure and I'm about six three

[01:02:29] two ten

[01:02:37] five eight I should just say that on the

[01:02:39] are you five eight no okay but that's sort of

[01:02:41] the thing I say on twitter a lot see here

[01:02:43] because no one knows I walked in you were already

[01:02:45] sitting down yeah I showed up to the studio

[01:02:47] yeah I'm five eight it could be a real power

[01:02:49] movie I'm five eight Griffin I just

[01:02:51] like from sitting I felt like we're like

[01:02:53] of equivalent size and I realized you could

[01:02:55] have stood up and suddenly been

[01:02:57] taller than me oh yeah no I'm just five

[01:02:59] eight people I'm a modest five eight

[01:03:01] you're a little bit taller than me

[01:03:03] I'm actually six three

[01:03:09] for the listeners at home I'm also actually

[01:03:11] winking while I make this yeah you're

[01:03:13] really just blinking all right now you're

[01:03:15] all right alien three would you actually

[01:03:17] have anything to say about it oh yeah

[01:03:19] so Vincent Ward he wanted to make some

[01:03:21] movie about like a wooden planet yes he

[01:03:23] did he wrote a treatment that is the most

[01:03:25] insane thing ever where he's like they land on

[01:03:27] a wooden planet everyone's like oh yeah

[01:03:29] keep going keep going no no is there a dollar sign

[01:03:31] like his interpretation

[01:03:35] there's no ass in wooden planet

[01:03:37] get the dollar sign out of the three

[01:03:39] that's what I was gonna say

[01:03:41] yeah so yeah or make

[01:03:43] it looks like a three but then you zoom

[01:03:45] in it's a bunch of little dollar signs

[01:03:47] making that would be weird

[01:03:49] he's like come closer

[01:03:51] all right

[01:03:53] they of course save that tagline for

[01:03:55] American beauty look closer fuck

[01:03:57] god fuck fuck fuck

[01:03:59] negative 15 American beauty

[01:04:01] points

[01:04:03] the worst kind of

[01:04:05] this is the punchiest episode we've done in

[01:04:07] like a little while it's a punchiest since

[01:04:09] the visit I would say the business is our punchiest

[01:04:11] episode ever yeah and that was of a two a day

[01:04:13] we were that was a back to backer was it a back to backer

[01:04:15] that was a back to backer Jesus Christ

[01:04:17] that was a back to backer it's just a little hot in here

[01:04:19] you know it's getting cool in New York so the AC

[01:04:21] is not working as well and you know it's a little

[01:04:23] hot in here sorry about that Fran

[01:04:25] I feel fine great the point I was gonna make was

[01:04:27] that I read this Vincent Ward interview and he said that

[01:04:29] the idea was when they came to him and

[01:04:31] he was like yeah sure I do an alien three

[01:04:33] he was like this kind of new filmmaker

[01:04:35] visually inventive

[01:04:37] and fitting in with

[01:04:39] the people they would hire who would be

[01:04:41] newish directors get people on the ascent right

[01:04:43] and he said like his

[01:04:45] interpretation was the aliens films

[01:04:47] were about America

[01:04:49] right you know they were sort of these like

[01:04:51] original sins of the foundation of our country

[01:04:53] alien one is this very industrial movie

[01:04:55] right and it's sort of about like capitalism

[01:04:57] right a corporation and that's where

[01:04:59] stuff in aliens two is about like war and it's

[01:05:01] called aliens not called aliens to aliens

[01:05:03] is about like war

[01:05:05] and it's about sexism it's about

[01:05:07] capital is you know I mean her best line

[01:05:09] is I don't know who's worse

[01:05:11] you don't see them fucking each other

[01:05:13] fucking each other over for a goddamn

[01:05:15] percentage which is a great line

[01:05:17] because she says it so casually

[01:05:19] but like when you hear you're like oh my god that's like a

[01:05:21] that's a very clever little line yeah

[01:05:23] yeah I do care uh aliens

[01:05:25] three his idea was that it was going

[01:05:27] to be about religion yeah

[01:05:29] and that was like the last thing we sort of had

[01:05:31] to tackle within the alien universe to be able to cover

[01:05:33] this like full thing and I like the

[01:05:35] idea the film weird religious colony on a wooden planet

[01:05:37] right exactly and then they decided to make

[01:05:39] it made a wood a sex offenders prison

[01:05:41] instead of the last second although there is still

[01:05:43] a wooden I mean there's no wooden

[01:05:45] there is still a religious element

[01:05:47] monks and their mind yeah but they are all

[01:05:49] sex offenders who were sent to a sex offender

[01:05:51] planet oh and they're all men she's the only

[01:05:53] woman it's a weird I like it's a weird movie

[01:05:55] it's not as bad as that sound yeah

[01:05:57] yeah I felt more so on

[01:05:59] wooden planet yeah I haven't seen that

[01:06:01] before what I was a good I mean the

[01:06:03] worst thing about alien three is that she

[01:06:05] crash lands and Charles dance wakes her up

[01:06:07] and she's like what happened she crashed land on

[01:06:09] that planet yeah and she's like what happens

[01:06:11] and what happens to Newton Hicks and he's

[01:06:13] like oh yeah they died and Bishop and

[01:06:15] she's like what do you mean the guys are

[01:06:17] okay and you're like what that

[01:06:19] sucks because it's you're so clear at the

[01:06:21] end of alien who is still alive which

[01:06:23] is just her and Jonesy yeah exactly

[01:06:25] which is great and in the alien

[01:06:27] she she literally to Jonesy is like

[01:06:29] you got to stay here because I don't

[01:06:31] think you're going to enjoy this movie

[01:06:33] you know but like you're fine

[01:06:35] safely written out right exactly see I

[01:06:37] kind of like I know that's everyone

[01:06:39] sticking point with alien three I kind

[01:06:41] of like it because I kind of like

[01:06:43] that the alien films are like anthology

[01:06:45] films with one character I don't have a

[01:06:47] band this time in these locations and

[01:06:49] they each one has to be sort of like a

[01:06:51] reset it's just a pattern that gets

[01:06:53] set by alien three making that decision

[01:06:55] it's not really necessary you

[01:06:57] could bring them back at least

[01:06:59] Bishop he does come back

[01:07:01] it's like his weird head she has

[01:07:03] to like reconstruct Bishop it's really

[01:07:05] cool yeah it is there's some cool

[01:07:07] shit in alien you couldn't bring back

[01:07:09] newt because she would be a lot older

[01:07:11] that was one of the many reasons and also

[01:07:13] the actress never appeared in another movie

[01:07:15] again and didn't want to be in school

[01:07:17] yeah she goes to the school yeah we should

[01:07:19] talk about new let's get back to aliens

[01:07:21] and I'm going to say it again the only

[01:07:23] reason the chappy alien film

[01:07:25] should happen alien colon chappy

[01:07:27] right in which case they would have

[01:07:29] an older and older

[01:07:31] and older chapies what's the

[01:07:33] s it's a dollar

[01:07:35] it's a shit emoji

[01:07:43] the only reason

[01:07:45] should direct a new alien film is

[01:07:47] so that Juno temple complain it

[01:07:49] yeah Juno temple be good new what do you think of this

[01:07:51] idea she looks like

[01:07:53] right and they have a similar energy

[01:07:55] she's great yeah

[01:07:57] who doesn't love Juno everyone loves Juno

[01:07:59] and she's overdue for

[01:08:01] like a badass

[01:08:03] type character I think she hasn't gotten to play someone like that yet

[01:08:05] and I think she's very capable of it that's the only reason

[01:08:07] I would want that film to exist I will continue

[01:08:09] fan casting that until the day I'm cool with an alien

[01:08:11] five I just don't think I want chappy

[01:08:13] to make it I don't know who I want to make it

[01:08:15] but chappy just doesn't excite me his name's

[01:08:17] Neil Blancamp for whatever his name is

[01:08:19] I don't like him what do you think of him I haven't seen

[01:08:21] any you haven't even seen all of this

[01:08:23] I never saw this you nine yeah I never

[01:08:25] I because I what I mean the free fire

[01:08:27] trailer came out and

[01:08:29] that's his boy shawto

[01:08:31] and I was apparently good according to some people

[01:08:34] and bad according to other people yeah that seems to be

[01:08:36] recurring thing with Wheatley films

[01:08:38] love my hand yeah but I was like

[01:08:40] oh what have I seen shawto and then it was

[01:08:42] like oh also nothing so I'm really just

[01:08:44] not even so you weren't a Maleficent

[01:08:46] fan I was gonna make this

[01:08:48] probably we're gonna do it better hey you guys

[01:08:50] are talking about chappy yeah I just

[01:08:52] thought of this one of the

[01:08:54] hen one of the guys the

[01:08:56] the Marines and aliens

[01:08:58] looks like one of the members from

[01:09:00] die ant would that's also in chappy

[01:09:02] you got a drake yeah I know

[01:09:04] the one of Aska's kind of likes

[01:09:06] exactly yeah oh yeah they got a similar

[01:09:08] vibe similar way by Mark

[01:09:10] Rolston he's cool he gets burned with

[01:09:12] acid so here's my pitch

[01:09:14] alien five

[01:09:16] directed by Jennifer

[01:09:18] Ken of the Babadook sure

[01:09:20] I mean she's one of those people where I'm

[01:09:22] excited to see your next movie yeah you know

[01:09:24] and I don't know what she'll do Hollywood's been trying to lure her away

[01:09:26] they almost they almost picked her for Captain Marvel

[01:09:28] and she keeps on being like I want control

[01:09:30] I want to do what I want I think that is a franchise

[01:09:32] that she would fit in Wal-Too that would

[01:09:34] match with the sort of themes and her

[01:09:36] skill and her sort of craft and everything

[01:09:38] fucking alien five Jennifer Kent

[01:09:40] Juno temple

[01:09:42] Sigourouni weaver give it to me

[01:09:46] Newt what do you think of Newt France

[01:09:48] played by Carrie Hen

[01:09:50] newt's fine yeah I

[01:09:52] think I agree with that I knew it pretty

[01:09:54] great pretty great times

[01:09:56] she's a little great maybe just like

[01:09:58] kind of like hint of British accent that really

[01:10:00] is jarring for me which is especially

[01:10:02] because she was American yeah she's got a funny

[01:10:04] voice which I love funny

[01:10:06] waves that funny diction yeah

[01:10:08] newt's a little heard a little voice

[01:10:10] just really

[01:10:12] I mean I don't even like South Park but

[01:10:14] South Park ruined they mostly come out

[01:10:16] at night mostly for me like

[01:10:18] that I can't not

[01:10:20] laugh when she says it now newt's my favorite

[01:10:22] I knew I knew it's real

[01:10:24] adorn you it's a real griffin

[01:10:26] I like yeah she's

[01:10:28] a good a pretty good version of a

[01:10:30] usually very difficult to like character

[01:10:32] yeah yeah yeah okay yeah I'll give it

[01:10:34] that I mean like the

[01:10:36] helpless little girl except she's not totally

[01:10:38] helpless but she's like pretty capable

[01:10:40] pretty capable she's like falls on an event

[01:10:42] she's like fucking vent watch out for the vent

[01:10:44] but I love I mean

[01:10:46] it's like she's been that way before because it's

[01:10:48] her leading them right and she's got

[01:10:50] and then she just falls through the vents like

[01:10:52] it does a million times okay but here's

[01:10:54] the thing I like about newt okay so newt

[01:10:56] just is she's a little girl from the mining colony

[01:10:58] the only survivor only survivor and

[01:11:00] she's been like living on one cool

[01:11:02] thing about aliens is that it takes into

[01:11:04] account the fact that it's gonna take them a while to get

[01:11:06] there yeah and so it's like they get a distress

[01:11:08] call or something like something's up in the colony

[01:11:10] they're like all right well let's get on the ship then when they arrive

[01:11:12] at the colony everyone is dead

[01:11:14] but newt's still there

[01:11:16] and she's a cute girl and obviously Ripley

[01:11:18] forms a mother-daughter bond with her which is great

[01:11:20] obviously like newt activates the most

[01:11:22] resident part but I think newt is a character

[01:11:24] works on her own and the thing I like about newt is

[01:11:26] obviously there's the thing where early on Hudson's like

[01:11:28] we're fucked man there's no option

[01:11:30] and she's like that girl has survived

[01:11:32] without any weapons or any training

[01:11:34] right and then they cut to newt and

[01:11:36] she's just wearing yours as helmet and she does the salute

[01:11:38] and I think that moment

[01:11:40] caps lights everything I like about newt which is that

[01:11:42] like she's a survivor without them ever trying to

[01:11:44] make her into some sort of like accidental badass

[01:11:46] right yeah they don't

[01:11:48] make her into some like oh and then she

[01:11:50] became like newt

[01:11:52] you know she's just some girl who has like

[01:11:54] happened to survive through resilience

[01:11:56] but she also keeps her like child like nature

[01:11:58] the entire film and there are a lot of scenes

[01:12:00] where like okay so she her falling

[01:12:02] through the shaft is like annoying she's at times

[01:12:04] surprisingly helpless

[01:12:06] well considering her sort of general

[01:12:08] like character type but I know what you mean

[01:12:10] there's a scene where they're sort of debriefing and they cut

[01:12:12] in and this is also only in the director's cut they cut

[01:12:14] in her yawning

[01:12:16] and it's like that touches great

[01:12:18] I love the scene where

[01:12:20] I like the way she's like what's up with your parents

[01:12:22] and she's like

[01:12:24] well they're dead okay

[01:12:26] she's got a really interesting balance

[01:12:28] of like you know this sort of like trauma

[01:12:30] like victim you know someone who's had to witness

[01:12:32] like everyone they've ever known

[01:12:34] die and every night

[01:12:36] hide out and fence away from aliens

[01:12:38] and she's like got this very

[01:12:40] interesting balance between like hyper

[01:12:42] awareness and sort of avoidance

[01:12:44] but the scene where like

[01:12:46] she's talking to Ripley and Ripley's trying to put her to bed

[01:12:48] and is like you know saying like I'm gonna have bad dreams

[01:12:50] and she's like no one's like well look in your

[01:12:52] or she carries around the doll head all she's got

[01:12:54] is the disembodied head of the doll

[01:12:56] and she looks into the head of the doll and she goes

[01:12:58] look see no bad dreams in there and she goes yeah but she's

[01:13:00] not real she's just made a plastic

[01:13:02] and Ripley laughs at it and it's like yeah you're

[01:13:04] fucking smart kid yeah Ripley's like oh I get it

[01:13:06] you know what's up I can't just do my usual bullshitting

[01:13:08] you've had to see a bunch of death she did that to Bill Paxton

[01:13:10] and he was like oh you're right in your bed

[01:13:12] I love newt

[01:13:14] they made a newt action figure

[01:13:16] and they only sold it at Comic Con

[01:13:18] and I like fucking like

[01:13:20] I kept on like pestering the tech people

[01:13:22] to be like does it look like we're going does it look like

[01:13:24] I'm getting a badge because I was like

[01:13:28] boy you based my twins

[01:13:30] I like fucking I just have a shelf of aliens

[01:13:32] and I want to have newt on there

[01:13:34] I was missing amongst my

[01:13:36] menagerie of alien characters newt

[01:13:38] I like that drop ship pilot who's like

[01:13:40] got the aviators and she's like in the

[01:13:42] pipe 5x5

[01:13:44] Farah? Oh yeah she's cool

[01:13:46] she is cool yeah it's a bummer that she dies

[01:13:48] yeah but that's that little scene

[01:13:50] it's so funny because she's so mad

[01:13:52] at her co-pilot for like

[01:13:54] not showing up because he was being devoured by an alien

[01:13:56] he sucks she's like oh didn't I tell you

[01:13:58] to and then it's great when she grabs her

[01:14:00] like she makes the go of it

[01:14:02] like she doesn't just die like a loser

[01:14:04] she grabs her gun and can we note the guy

[01:14:06] her co-pilot who dies just because

[01:14:08] he has one of the best last names in the history

[01:14:10] of cinema is sponkmeyer

[01:14:12] and this is the last name

[01:14:14] and she keeps saying it too

[01:14:16] sponkmeyer? yeah

[01:14:18] the final like skeleton crew of this movie

[01:14:20] is six people

[01:14:22] yeah it's Ripley Hicks, Burke

[01:14:24] Bishop

[01:14:26] oh I guess seven I

[01:14:28] Burke dies midway right but I mean the hero crew

[01:14:30] that we're left with is

[01:14:32] Ripley Hicks, Burke

[01:14:34] Ripley Hicks, Bishop, Hudson

[01:14:36] Newt

[01:14:38] and Gorman

[01:14:40] oh no and Vasquez

[01:14:42] oh yeah Vasquez and Gorman well they died together

[01:14:44] yeah yeah

[01:14:46] great little scene

[01:14:48] really like that scene

[01:14:50] I forgot that it was more than that

[01:14:52] I was gonna say it's like 50-50 but the fact that there are like three females

[01:14:54] within a group of like

[01:14:56] survivors and that they are always present throughout the film

[01:14:58] as being the most competent

[01:15:00] yeah we talked about it on our Terminator pod

[01:15:02] Cameron has this

[01:15:04] like he almost fetishizes

[01:15:06] like motherhood and like mothers

[01:15:08] he seems to like

[01:15:10] revere them as this sort of warrior

[01:15:12] type it can be a little patronizing

[01:15:14] in both but it works

[01:15:16] largely especially in like the 80s when you're not getting a lot of

[01:15:18] female characters

[01:15:20] in general

[01:15:22] but this one I think also he has a bit of a variety to it

[01:15:24] I mean you look at like Vasquez, Ripley

[01:15:26] and Newt represent like three

[01:15:28] pretty different types of women

[01:15:30] you know and all of them are like

[01:15:32] strong and tough and like badass

[01:15:34] but like in Newt it's in the form of

[01:15:36] like a little girl who still carries around

[01:15:38] a doll head you know

[01:15:40] in like Vasquez it's obviously much more of a

[01:15:42] like you know sort of like

[01:15:44] pop art poster kind of way

[01:15:46] what do you think Fran?

[01:15:48] no I agree with that

[01:15:50] I mean I was talking

[01:15:52] I'm gonna talk about my mom more

[01:15:54] I mean my mom loves this movie and she was just also

[01:15:56] remembers seeing it

[01:15:58] in theaters and the fact that there even just like

[01:16:00] were female marines that are like

[01:16:02] in this movie and treated with like the same

[01:16:04] level of respect especially Vasquez

[01:16:06] even just the background ones

[01:16:08] at the base and stuff you'll just see

[01:16:10] like a lot of background women

[01:16:12] he integrates them more into the military

[01:16:14] than most films do

[01:16:16] and it feels very normalized and it's not a thing that's

[01:16:18] apart from that offhand joke

[01:16:20] which gets shut down right away which feels like

[01:16:22] a sort of

[01:16:24] hint that's like we're not gonna take that kind of

[01:16:26] seriously over here and that joke also has less to do

[01:16:28] with the fact that Vasquez is a woman in the military

[01:16:30] and more that Vasquez is the most terrifying person in history

[01:16:32] you know like it's a joke about her gender

[01:16:34] but it's specific to

[01:16:36] like the form that her gender

[01:16:38] she's tough

[01:16:40] but now go on about your mom

[01:16:42] oh just that was most of it

[01:16:44] that there were women in the military and that's

[01:16:46] it's not a thing and

[01:16:48] the whole thing about women in Alien

[01:16:50] is that they're just like not listened to

[01:16:52] Ripley never listened to

[01:16:54] and that's like the thing about women in it

[01:16:56] that is like both like commendable

[01:16:58] and interesting and feels realistic to it

[01:17:00] because this might be bad and everyone's like

[01:17:02] we just don't know if how bad it might be

[01:17:04] I mean that got me so annoyed where it's like

[01:17:06] you have somebody telling you that aliens jump

[01:17:08] onto your face and lay eggs inside

[01:17:10] of you and you're like ah fuck you

[01:17:12] like that's insane

[01:17:14] no one covered their mouth when they went in there

[01:17:16] come on but once again like Hicks is me

[01:17:18] Hicks is like

[01:17:20] don't make fun of me

[01:17:22] I see you on the camera David

[01:17:24] Hicks is like the most conventional sort of

[01:17:26] gunslinger type in the film and his

[01:17:28] power comes from much like Mad Max Fury Road

[01:17:30] that he knows like

[01:17:32] oh I'm not the hero of this story

[01:17:34] and the best thing I can do is

[01:17:36] use my power as a man to listen to what she's saying

[01:17:38] and get other people to hear it

[01:17:40] there's that great moment where she says like

[01:17:42] I think we should go into orbit and then like nuke the shit out of this whole place

[01:17:44] right and then

[01:17:46] Burke is like what do you talk about we can't do that

[01:17:48] there's so much money

[01:17:50] and then she goes like well Corporal Hicks

[01:17:52] I also love when she says that Hudson's

[01:17:54] like yeah nuke the play

[01:17:56] dude she's fucking nuke it

[01:17:58] and then uh yeah Burke is like no no

[01:18:00] no no and she's like well you know now that he's

[01:18:02] dead Corporal Hicks has now taken command this is

[01:18:04] military operation Hicks he goes yo Hicks

[01:18:06] I mean he can't take care of this what he's

[01:18:08] grunt no offense Hicks

[01:18:10] Ryzer's so good we need to talk about Ryzer next

[01:18:12] oh my god I texted both of you a picture of

[01:18:14] Paul Ryzer's name in the credits and he didn't reply

[01:18:16] to me and it was very offensive both

[01:18:18] I was too busy jerking off after you sent me that picture

[01:18:20] the mere name

[01:18:22] terrible both of you terrible

[01:18:24] no Ryzer's great

[01:18:26] I think I'm more terrible than Fran

[01:18:28] Fran was just on a plane

[01:18:30] I was just first class with Ansel

[01:18:32] first class with Ansel

[01:18:34] so Paul Ryzer's been in the moment I was

[01:18:36] going to say was I'm sorry he like no offense

[01:18:38] and then like Hicks you know she goes

[01:18:40] like Hicks what do you think and he just repeats

[01:18:42] the exact same thing she said and then

[01:18:44] was sort of a knowing wink where it's like I got you

[01:18:46] I'm gonna use my privilege

[01:18:48] to your advantage

[01:18:50] Paul Ryzer's

[01:18:52] yeah yeah um

[01:18:54] he had been in diner and then

[01:18:56] they were gonna make diners with it

[01:18:58] they opened up a second diner next door

[01:19:00] he's in Beverly Hills Cop

[01:19:02] which I don't I've barely

[01:19:04] I haven't seen it since I was a kid

[01:19:06] so the opening of Beverly Hills Cop when he's

[01:19:08] in Detroit before he goes to Beverly

[01:19:10] Hills to investigate Paul Ryzer's

[01:19:12] one of the guys in the office who's like

[01:19:14] Fully what the fuck are you talking about

[01:19:16] he's in for one scene

[01:19:18] sounds like he does a great job he's great in diner

[01:19:20] he won an Oscar for that yeah he won two Oscars

[01:19:22] diner and then Beverly Hills Cop

[01:19:24] C1

[01:19:26] that was tough for me

[01:19:28] so alien so he's pretty new he hasn't done

[01:19:30] Man About You yet and he's like third building this

[01:19:32] I think sounds right I think it's

[01:19:34] Weaver Bean and then Ryzer

[01:19:36] My Two Dads is

[01:19:38] gonna come next year okay that's his other

[01:19:40] sitcom you guys don't remember he was on a

[01:19:42] sitcom called My Two Dad don't tell me what I do

[01:19:44] and don't remember and then of course

[01:19:46] there's a Man About You

[01:19:48] no he's great novel fatherhood or whatever it's

[01:19:50] called what was it and then husband hood

[01:19:52] you're like like five of them right he wrote

[01:19:54] all the hoods and then the Paul Ryzer

[01:19:56] show obviously yeah which I mean never

[01:19:58] forget which do you know the do you

[01:20:00] remember the Paul Ryzer show no it was

[01:20:02] basically like it was like five years

[01:20:04] ago maybe four years ago it was like

[01:20:06] wait really an NBC version

[01:20:08] of Kirby your enthusiasm starring Paul

[01:20:10] Ryzer is himself yep and I was the for sure

[01:20:12] live you were for sure alive I believe it

[01:20:14] aired one episode on

[01:20:16] broadcast television maybe two

[01:20:18] I think he gave her to big promotional

[01:20:20] push it was him it was Amy Lanaker I

[01:20:22] think was his wife Amy Lanaker

[01:20:24] Andy Daly's in that shit

[01:20:26] what's his name

[01:20:28] Omija Lilly Omija Lilly

[01:20:30] isn't that the guy he was

[01:20:32] a Daily Show correspondent

[01:20:34] why my friggin name and he went on

[01:20:36] to About a Boy

[01:20:38] no idea what you're talking about I'm gonna figure out

[01:20:40] Ben Shankman from Angels and

[01:20:42] Maricots in it anyway so

[01:20:44] Paul Ryzer makes me think of acid wash jeans

[01:20:46] like a t-shirt

[01:20:48] that was his fourth book was acid wash

[01:20:50] should

[01:20:52] they aired like two episodes and then

[01:20:54] they're like I'm sorry this was a mistake

[01:20:56] anyway so that's Paul Ryzer purely off

[01:20:58] trust on this yeah we might I can't

[01:21:00] believe I don't that cast that I named

[01:21:02] is pretty weird from

[01:21:04] for to actually have happened I might

[01:21:06] have just been free associating names

[01:21:08] Ben Shankman

[01:21:10] Andy Daly

[01:21:12] no it was real

[01:21:14] and my boss former boss Todd

[01:21:16] Vandewerf once sent me a

[01:21:18] screener of it that he got to his house

[01:21:20] he like paid for postage just in my house

[01:21:22] told me he sent me a present

[01:21:24] it was the Paul Ryzer show

[01:21:26] it was nice so that's his number one

[01:21:28] achievement number two aliens is great

[01:21:30] real fucker yeah

[01:21:32] I love the way

[01:21:34] he dies oh it's so good

[01:21:36] he's sort of tricked in the same way he's

[01:21:38] tried to trick Ripley

[01:21:40] and so he's the representative

[01:21:42] Wayland Yutani right of the evil

[01:21:44] organization what are you doing

[01:21:46] I'm trying to look at it but now I feel like maybe I was wrong

[01:21:48] about yeah there's no daily show

[01:21:50] guy in it

[01:21:52] now I'm wondering if this is like a baron stain bears

[01:21:54] thing because I could have I watched one episode

[01:21:56] whatever this is unimportant very unimportant

[01:21:58] the guy I was thinking of and I could have

[01:22:00] enjoyed him I think we're thinking of another

[01:22:02] show I think so

[01:22:04] he so he represents whatever the corporate

[01:22:06] overlords that are sort of

[01:22:08] hinted at in alien

[01:22:10] and it is like Cameron decides to flesh out here

[01:22:12] it is really just called the company in alien

[01:22:14] a gorgeous performance

[01:22:16] it's so good I well I remember the first time

[01:22:18] I saw aliens which maybe was

[01:22:20] high school I was very

[01:22:22] I was curious if they were going to

[01:22:24] redeem him in some way because he plays

[01:22:26] it a little sort of like creepy but

[01:22:28] neutral but in the way that like robot

[01:22:30] the robots are sort of like okay now I

[01:22:32] was like maybe the company

[01:22:34] right better now and it's fun

[01:22:36] to watch that line

[01:22:38] be played for maybe like the first hour

[01:22:40] of it right after a while you're like

[01:22:42] yeah I mean it's around when she's like

[01:22:44] let's nuke the place he's like well there's

[01:22:46] a substantial dollar value

[01:22:48] come out of this being heroes you're looking like heroes

[01:22:50] eventually obviously we realize like

[01:22:52] his job is get some alien eggs

[01:22:54] yeah into a he just lied he's

[01:22:56] straight up lied on the video on the

[01:22:58] video screen when she's like we're gonna go kill

[01:23:00] him he's like yeah and she calls him

[01:23:02] just to say yeah

[01:23:04] after having one of those horrible

[01:23:06] nightmares and that is a horrible nightwear sequence

[01:23:08] when she imagines that she's got an alien inside

[01:23:10] her yeah he

[01:23:12] she calls him just to say we're gonna kill him all right and he's like

[01:23:14] absolutely yeah

[01:23:16] he's a real better man over that he lied about

[01:23:18] everything yeah he even lied about straight

[01:23:20] up lie he lied about being shirtless

[01:23:22] it was he was really wearing a shirt

[01:23:24] a t-shirt that looked like a chest

[01:23:26] fucking wow

[01:23:28] nuanced the what century

[01:23:30] is it sending they've got some great shirts in that

[01:23:32] I think it's in the 1800

[01:23:34] the thing I was gonna say

[01:23:36] is the beauty of this performance to me

[01:23:38] sure is that he doesn't play

[01:23:40] the villainy like he knows

[01:23:42] oh yeah things that will be revealed about the character

[01:23:44] will make you hate him anyway yeah and he could do one of two things

[01:23:46] the two obvious things you could do in this role

[01:23:48] which is like the way to slick

[01:23:50] and telegraph it from the beginning

[01:23:52] that like this guy's a snake oil salesman

[01:23:54] no he's playing it like a guy who thinks

[01:23:56] he's doing the right thing right or

[01:23:58] or the other option is be way too squirrely

[01:24:00] and look too nervous and what you're saying

[01:24:02] so clear this guy's line he's a fucking

[01:24:04] he's like an addict Zach he's he thinks

[01:24:06] this is a good idea which makes him

[01:24:08] more villainous because it's not like he

[01:24:10] it's the bottom he thinks he's in the right

[01:24:12] yeah thinks he's the hero of the world you have to understand

[01:24:14] how a company would be like I know

[01:24:16] every time these aliens get out it's a real

[01:24:18] nightmare but they're really good

[01:24:20] yeah and we'd really love to have one

[01:24:22] yeah so if you could just get

[01:24:24] one to put on Ripley's face maybe she's

[01:24:26] a real pain in the ass yeah just get her in a room

[01:24:28] with an alien you know we'll figure out the rest

[01:24:30] you know like the idea that that decision

[01:24:32] could be rationalized

[01:24:34] listen to this guy in a board room he's

[01:24:36] like he's pretty convincing he's got a real

[01:24:38] sort of like stoic kind of focus

[01:24:40] to him you know he's like sort of defending

[01:24:42] her in that board room

[01:24:44] meeting in the beginning because I think he genuinely

[01:24:46] also believes that what happened on that shit

[01:24:48] happened and then he wants

[01:24:50] one of these aliens for himself yeah

[01:24:52] he's so good um he is

[01:24:54] I feel like I mean we're not

[01:24:56] we're not doing plot in this episode but it also is because the plot

[01:24:58] is just survival I mean it's

[01:25:00] you know it is the classic Vietnam

[01:25:02] time movie where it's like they're all gunko

[01:25:04] yeah get to the thing they meet new you know

[01:25:06] like the things seem there the

[01:25:08] terraforming colony seems weird like there's

[01:25:10] weird holes in the floor and like

[01:25:12] acid burns and

[01:25:14] and then they get attacked by a bunch of aliens and

[01:25:16] like half of them die like the sort of characters

[01:25:18] we haven't really mentioned just get like sucked into

[01:25:20] the air by aliens it's such a cool sequence

[01:25:22] they go into like the hive where they go

[01:25:24] right into the hive it's all sticky

[01:25:26] real sticky they're not supposed to

[01:25:28] like shoot their guns because they could like blow up

[01:25:30] the whole planet by mistake but they are

[01:25:32] you know they've got it's

[01:25:34] a disaster like I love the idea they've

[01:25:36] all got these great guns and immediately it's like they're all

[01:25:38] useless don't use any of them because they can't shoot

[01:25:40] anything because like the colony could blow up just from

[01:25:42] like how it's built but also the aliens are

[01:25:44] full of acid so there's like two different things they can't shoot

[01:25:46] it's flame throws are cool

[01:25:48] the flame throwers are very cool I do love

[01:25:50] every time an alien pops like you see one pop underneath

[01:25:53] the wheel of their car thing

[01:25:55] maybe that's when oh this might be my

[01:25:58] the goof that I

[01:26:00] you're gonna reveal a goof on your Amazon X-ray

[01:26:02] I feel so lame how much I love this well I hate

[01:26:05] goofs usually but one of the Amazon goofs

[01:26:07] because I want my phones to be you know

[01:26:09] seamless and well made flawless

[01:26:11] but I think it's when they're they drive

[01:26:14] over the alien and it bursts that

[01:26:16] they're like you can see a whole egg yolk come out

[01:26:18] and you definitely can and I saw it

[01:26:20] and I love so it is a whole egg yolk coming out of this

[01:26:23] like it's a good bursting yeah all the

[01:26:26] goopy stuff in this is so good

[01:26:28] this is a great goop movie I love the milk

[01:26:30] it's a real goopy the milk blood obviously

[01:26:32] wonderful and like arguably grosser than a lot of

[01:26:35] like real blood things that's the thing

[01:26:37] milk is gross oh the grossest it's my number one

[01:26:40] least favorite I love milk but I know it's gross

[01:26:42] I mean I'm okay on milk I feel like in

[01:26:44] the middle of the milk conversation that just broke out here but

[01:26:46] it's your least favorite thing yeah it's my least favorite

[01:26:50] what are you looking up it's all the same for later

[01:26:52] it's a segment don't worry about whole segment can't wait

[01:26:55] but it is pretty gross like we all agree like sort

[01:26:58] of to think about that's why I think I probably

[01:27:00] like the alien film so much because they have a similar

[01:27:02] view on milk to me they align politically yeah

[01:27:06] it's sort of a uncanny valley sort of type of

[01:27:09] moment wouldn't you say yes yes I would Ben thank

[01:27:12] you so much our finest film credit

[01:27:15] appreciate it I'll just jump in whenever

[01:27:18] the aliens pop they shoot blood everywhere

[01:27:21] I asked I like that the acid happens more than once

[01:27:24] like it's not just like I wouldn't remember

[01:27:27] they have acid but like anytime they shoot an alien

[01:27:30] they're at least partially scarred by acid yeah

[01:27:33] good love that scene and then it's basically

[01:27:36] just the sort of core eight that we talked about

[01:27:39] that you thought were six returned about the acid

[01:27:42] shoot now does the acid ever stop melting

[01:27:45] because it seems like it could go right through

[01:27:47] the armor then onto your skin yeah so what happens

[01:27:50] Ben is it burns through all the way until it

[01:27:53] eventually goes down through the layers of the earth

[01:27:57] that's what I was thinking goes through the center

[01:27:59] and it comes out the other side so you can

[01:28:01] drop a pencil and then it drips into space

[01:28:03] yes well China first because China of course

[01:28:05] is on the other side of the world and if you

[01:28:07] go to the hole you get to China okay in England

[01:28:09] if you do go to Australia oh yeah it's like

[01:28:12] the stereotype same thing it's like there's

[01:28:14] like whenever a cartoon character like comes out

[01:28:16] of a hole on the other side in England

[01:28:18] there's a kangaroo because they're in Australia

[01:28:20] that's cool anyway whatever the hell

[01:28:23] just happened happened you guys talked

[01:28:25] about acid I can't remember what I was

[01:28:27] talking about the core group of the eight

[01:28:30] oh yeah so then they hunkered down and

[01:28:32] they have to like try and survive because

[01:28:34] the drop ship is coming it becomes like a

[01:28:36] survive the night kind of yes because I

[01:28:38] love that scene with like drops just coming

[01:28:40] great news and we just see it sort of this

[01:28:42] great model yeah it's a good model just

[01:28:44] sort of go like through some clouds and

[01:28:48] drawings of clouds like elegance of James

[01:28:50] right okay this movie was like a much

[01:28:52] bigger budget than Terminator but it

[01:28:54] still is like by our relative standards

[01:28:56] you know like phone budgets hadn't become

[01:28:58] astronomical yet yeah what is the budget

[01:29:00] on this one let me look it up for

[01:29:02] $15 million jeez that's pretty crazy

[01:29:04] that's actually that's crazy

[01:29:06] that's crazy because even present day

[01:29:08] that would only be 40 maybe no I think it

[01:29:10] would be like 60 or 70 which would still

[01:29:12] be incredibly low for a film of this

[01:29:14] scope I don't think it would be that high

[01:29:16] I think it would because I think the

[01:29:18] film made like 80 and in modern day

[01:29:20] 85 which is 200 in modern day so it's

[01:29:22] well so little more than double but

[01:29:24] not much I think 20 would be like

[01:29:26] no that's that's twice double

[01:29:28] that's not I'm gonna look up a

[01:29:30] film that made $20 million that year

[01:29:32] have fun with that okay and then

[01:29:34] adjust for inflation what I was going

[01:29:36] to say I have no wife what I was

[01:29:38] going to say was

[01:29:40] I'm gonna find one psycho 3 made

[01:29:42] $14 million too low

[01:29:44] I won't settle for that which counts

[01:29:46] is 33 so extrapolate

[01:29:48] I'm looking for 20 on the nugget

[01:29:50] and we'll settle for nothing anyway

[01:29:52] it was a pretty yes it's a math podcast

[01:29:54] it's a math podcast where we can

[01:29:56] only do math if we relate it through

[01:29:58] films that came out in a certain year

[01:30:00] that's why we keep our checks blank because

[01:30:02] we're still trying to do the math it takes us forever

[01:30:04] so they gave him a moderate budget I think

[01:30:06] the terminator costs what like 6 or 7 million

[01:30:08] less like yeah not much because

[01:30:10] like three or four because there's the story

[01:30:12] that he wanted to blow up a car and terminator

[01:30:14] and there wasn't room to budget and he was like well

[01:30:16] guess I'm losing my car like he blew

[01:30:18] up his own car you know they like

[01:30:20] stretch that to like the limits

[01:30:22] Sigourney Weaver was paid a million dollars

[01:30:24] which was a lot of money for the day and

[01:30:26] he was more than she made for alien

[01:30:28] do that math and hey a bargain

[01:30:30] a bargain at twice the price and she was nominated

[01:30:32] for an Oscar which is okay so

[01:30:34] it was her first Oscar nomination

[01:30:36] watched all the alien films loved them got

[01:30:38] the quadrilogy for Christmas right

[01:30:40] that Christmas I went on

[01:30:42] vacation to Australia

[01:30:44] on the other side of your home at the time

[01:30:46] one of my best friends from middle school had moved to Australia

[01:30:48] and I was like I'm gonna go on a trip to Australia

[01:30:50] and I went to Australia with this family for like a couple weeks right

[01:30:52] sure I brought the alien quadrilogy

[01:30:54] set with me and he hadn't seen any of them and we watched them all together

[01:30:56] and then we watched all the like special feature

[01:30:58] which is a great way to spend time in Australia

[01:31:00] just watching TV special features

[01:31:02] Hey man you did what you did

[01:31:04] I did the same thing yeah

[01:31:06] it's 300 and 33,333

[01:31:08] 3333

[01:31:10] 3333

[01:31:12] What math?

[01:31:14] I think you may have multiple

[01:31:16] What do you do?

[01:31:18] I might have a way to sing a number you know

[01:31:20] I fucked it up

[01:31:22] so I

[01:31:24] at that point in time like I had been

[01:31:26] charting modern Oscars from the moment

[01:31:28] I started watching but I had like never

[01:31:30] really like studied the past nominations

[01:31:32] we're watching this documentary

[01:31:34] about like the making of aliens and they go

[01:31:36] like you know the film was a huge box of

[01:31:38] success played really well with audiences

[01:31:40] and then it got good reviews

[01:31:42] we weren't expecting Oscar nominations

[01:31:44] we thought we'd get the sound and the like whatever

[01:31:46] sure right and then they said like you hear

[01:31:48] Gail Ann Hearn's voice say but we were

[01:31:50] stunned when Sigourney got nominated for

[01:31:52] Best Actress and over that

[01:31:54] Gail Ann Hearn poll quote right that

[01:31:56] sound bite they just cut to

[01:31:58] Ripley in the power loader

[01:32:00] and my friend and I in unison

[01:32:02] turned to each other and went

[01:32:04] whoa

[01:32:06] like our minds were blown we were like wait they gave her a fucking

[01:32:08] Oscar nomination for that this is a real specific memory

[01:32:10] you have yeah I think about this all the time

[01:32:12] we just turned to each other and went that's the coolest

[01:32:14] thing I've ever heard

[01:32:16] especially when you see her in the

[01:32:18] power loader over that fact

[01:32:20] but the idea that it's like this is so

[01:32:22] the kind of performance that never gets

[01:32:24] recommended oh it's true yeah and especially

[01:32:26] for her 1986

[01:32:28] yeah

[01:32:30] is that out of Africa wins best picture

[01:32:32] what wins best picture that you

[01:32:34] got lots of women in it

[01:32:36] Geraldine Page tripped the bountiful

[01:32:38] no it's Marley Matlin

[01:32:40] old young old

[01:32:42] the youngest Best Actress for her

[01:32:44] it's 33,000

[01:32:46] what are you talking about

[01:32:48] that was your salary for alien

[01:32:50] I thought he was trying to

[01:32:52] adjust the aliens budget for inflation

[01:32:54] somehow he got smaller with the number

[01:32:58] yeah aliens cost

[01:33:00] 33 grand in today's money

[01:33:02] alright

[01:33:04] we gotta wrap your

[01:33:06] it's the type of nomination that never happens

[01:33:08] we haven't even talked about the alien queen and I'm realizing

[01:33:10] that's what we're going to make

[01:33:12] but for that to be the first Oscar nomination

[01:33:14] it's really great to see for a film like this

[01:33:16] that's not the type of thing that ever gets recognized

[01:33:18] and also it's a very understated performance

[01:33:20] it really is it's a quiet

[01:33:22] sort of like small focused

[01:33:24] resilient woman

[01:33:26] arguably it's a showier performance in

[01:33:28] the first alien because then she's kind of

[01:33:30] like panicking and now she's mad

[01:33:32] and then she's freaked out

[01:33:34] yeah it's true and in this she has

[01:33:36] obviously she has the getaway from her you bitch

[01:33:38] like she has a couple big moments

[01:33:40] but she's very understated

[01:33:42] because yeah she is sort of

[01:33:44] observing

[01:33:46] she shouldn't go

[01:33:48] no that's the only thing

[01:33:50] about aliens that you like she had a

[01:33:52] terrible time

[01:33:54] with the alien last time really a bad

[01:33:56] and she just woke up

[01:33:58] but that was probably like the worst weekend of her life

[01:34:00] was the first movie he was up there

[01:34:02] and they're like okay well

[01:34:04] you know that planet you went to with the eggs

[01:34:06] remember that and she's like I do

[01:34:08] well something bad's happening

[01:34:10] do you want to come and she of course in the movie

[01:34:12] she's like no I don't want to go like and then

[01:34:14] she calls Paul riser as we talked about

[01:34:16] well first she's like when you say something bad

[01:34:18] do you mean like embezzlement and they're like no it's the alien shit again

[01:34:20] is that alien shit

[01:34:22] and they say to her like well you'll get

[01:34:24] reinstated as like a warrant officer or whatever

[01:34:26] and it's like she should be like yeah

[01:34:28] no like just can I go to earth

[01:34:30] I'm fucking Ripley

[01:34:32] so she shouldn't do it

[01:34:34] but I love that once she's on the ship

[01:34:36] she is very like quiet and observant

[01:34:38] and like doesn't really

[01:34:40] show her deck of cards

[01:34:42] like until shit starts to go down

[01:34:44] and then she's like everyone needs to listen to me

[01:34:46] because the same thing is happening to happen

[01:34:48] last time when I saw the film

[01:34:50] at I love Ripley

[01:34:52] my biggest like life goal is to

[01:34:54] have a daughter name her Ripley I've told you this before right

[01:34:56] I don't know and my mom has said what if

[01:34:58] your wife doesn't want to name your daughter Ripley

[01:35:00] and my responses she wouldn't be my wife

[01:35:02] it's very cute

[01:35:04] things would not get that far

[01:35:06] because I have priorities

[01:35:08] what I was going to say was when I saw the film

[01:35:10] at town hall and

[01:35:12] Sigourney spoke afterwards

[01:35:14] there was a woman singing next to my sister and I

[01:35:16] who was very intense the whole film right

[01:35:18] there was this woman singing by herself who was very intense

[01:35:20] my sister was even like that woman's intense

[01:35:22] and she got up and she asked the first question

[01:35:24] she said hey I served I did three tours

[01:35:26] you were always an inspiration to me watching the films

[01:35:28] as a young girl and then now

[01:35:30] that I've gotten back and had to reacquimate

[01:35:32] I watched the films and I see that

[01:35:34] Ripley especially in this film is one of the best portrayals

[01:35:36] of PTSD I've ever seen in a movie

[01:35:38] very traumatized yeah

[01:35:40] especially that scene in the

[01:35:42] colony where they find the woman who's been

[01:35:44] wrapped up and her chest starts to

[01:35:46] like you know

[01:35:48] get an alien coming out of it

[01:35:50] that's how you describe that right

[01:35:52] very awful and the way she's on

[01:35:54] watching on video like she's not even there

[01:35:56] and the way she reacts to it is

[01:35:58] quite good

[01:36:00] the thing I find beautiful about this performance

[01:36:02] is she is playing

[01:36:04] you know someone suffering from PTSD

[01:36:06] but she is playing someone

[01:36:08] who is not defined by that

[01:36:10] which is a very unshoey way

[01:36:12] of doing that like she doesn't have

[01:36:14] her sort of big breakdown scenes

[01:36:16] there are very small cracks and it is someone

[01:36:18] who just is like trying to keep

[01:36:20] moving forward

[01:36:22] and on a sort of bend technology

[01:36:24] technology type tangent

[01:36:26] when you mention the screens

[01:36:28] a big thought I had watching the movie this time

[01:36:30] is like HD video has really ruined

[01:36:32] a certain

[01:36:34] kind of tension in genre films

[01:36:36] like this because there's a beautiful

[01:36:38] language to having film

[01:36:40] and it's like 35mm

[01:36:42] and it looks rich and then you cut to someone look at something on

[01:36:44] a monitor and it's like grainy

[01:36:46] and now the monitor looks the same

[01:36:48] as the movie because both things are shot on

[01:36:50] high depth video I love

[01:36:52] the fucking video call

[01:36:54] I love when they're watching the security foot

[01:36:56] all that shit is unnerving

[01:36:58] when they're way zoomed in on like a pixelated screen

[01:37:00] let's talk about the queen

[01:37:02] what do you think of the queen frame

[01:37:04] she's gross

[01:37:06] yeah they really hone in

[01:37:08] on how fucking gross bugs are

[01:37:10] at the end of the day it's a movie about

[01:37:12] bugs and

[01:37:14] they're gross, she's awful

[01:37:16] oh god that's like a scary

[01:37:18] big

[01:37:20] gross thing that kind of like

[01:37:22] hearing them scuttle in this

[01:37:24] is like

[01:37:26] when there's more than one of them it's really just

[01:37:28] the sound editing and mixing of this

[01:37:30] is amazing

[01:37:32] when it removes itself from the like

[01:37:34] exact

[01:37:36] oh my god that is so disturbing

[01:37:38] that's the only thing Cameron designed

[01:37:40] obviously he retained the

[01:37:42] they like tweaked him a little bit but the aliens basically look the same

[01:37:44] yeah

[01:37:46] but he designed the queen himself he's a weirdo that guy

[01:37:48] Jimmy C

[01:37:50] do you think that the head in the

[01:37:52] mouth has any say in decision making

[01:37:54] your question whether the head in the mouth has a

[01:37:56] mind of its own

[01:37:58] yeah it's like the little guy working inside the brain

[01:38:00] yeah like in men and black

[01:38:02] like a guado

[01:38:04] is that what it is?

[01:38:06] I've never met someone

[01:38:08] who references

[01:38:10] guadomor

[01:38:12] says his name wrong every time

[01:38:14] guys I gotta pee you keep talking

[01:38:16] this is a first

[01:38:18] it's a first I really gotta pee though

[01:38:20] should we do a

[01:38:22] pee break?

[01:38:24] no I feel like we should talk about

[01:38:26] what someone can talk about now that David is in this

[01:38:28] oh that's great

[01:38:30] you know what I'm saying?

[01:38:32] what do you think of David's shirt?

[01:38:34] he told me he was wearing

[01:38:36] a different shirt earlier today

[01:38:38] yeah when we were like in a meetup he's like

[01:38:40] I'm wearing this shirt but it's a different shirt

[01:38:42] that's a weird thing to say wait so when you met up with him

[01:38:44] he was wearing a different shirt or he told you that he had just

[01:38:46] pain I was like look for me

[01:38:48] I look like this and he was like

[01:38:50] I look like I'm wearing this shirt

[01:38:52] but then it was this shirt

[01:38:54] interesting so he

[01:38:56] he self corrected by a text but it was like a weird

[01:38:58] practical joke so you know

[01:39:00] I'm like a lone girl in New York City

[01:39:02] yeah I just got here

[01:39:04] you're like Ripley stranded on

[01:39:06] planet LV41 and I'm like being

[01:39:08] lied to by a friendly person

[01:39:10] right god I'm so glad I asked this

[01:39:12] question I know what's gonna be opening up here

[01:39:14] okay so let's describe it to the listeners at home

[01:39:16] it's like a very nondescript navy blue

[01:39:18] polo stripes no stripes solid

[01:39:20] are you sure and I don't

[01:39:22] I think it's solid

[01:39:24] and

[01:39:26] you both have been sitting in the room with him

[01:39:28] for like over two hours

[01:39:30] this is a test to how attentive we are

[01:39:32] but they're blue stripes

[01:39:35] wait what's going on guys tell me

[01:39:37] the striping is so light

[01:39:39] I've been looking at this whole time

[01:39:41] Griffin thought you had a solid colored

[01:39:43] shirt the striping is thin

[01:39:45] and light it's very thin and it's

[01:39:47] very light it's my favorite thing about boys is

[01:39:49] they struggle with color

[01:39:51] interesting I do men are more colorblind than

[01:39:53] yeah well sure men isn't that actually

[01:39:55] scientifically true like more men are colorblind

[01:39:57] then why don't see color

[01:39:59] politically I'm good with color

[01:40:03] I've just gotten really into purple

[01:40:05] yeah yeah I've been wearing purple a lot dark

[01:40:07] light I like lavender

[01:40:09] I can't go too light but

[01:40:11] yeah purple I think you could I think

[01:40:13] you could really yeah I don't know

[01:40:15] like grape soda light

[01:40:17] what or no

[01:40:19] it's like a real light purple

[01:40:21] like a light where the color

[01:40:23] yeah I guess grape soda

[01:40:25] I was going off

[01:40:27] I say move

[01:40:29] maybe British fuchsia

[01:40:31] Ben I don't know if I'm putting you on

[01:40:33] Blast year but you recently confided to

[01:40:35] me that you've been

[01:40:37] sort of mulling over

[01:40:39] an alien to alien

[01:40:41] style lateral move into the world of

[01:40:43] fashion

[01:40:45] yeah I like fashion

[01:40:47] Ben told me that he's thinking

[01:40:49] more in terms of fashion these days

[01:40:51] he's like kind of interested in

[01:40:53] stepping into the fashion world

[01:40:55] I am actually so if anybody out there wants to

[01:40:57] like you know book me for a shoot

[01:40:59] or get my opinion

[01:41:01] I can consult on trends

[01:41:03] and fashion this is my favorite trend

[01:41:05] right now

[01:41:07] yeah I actually I really like

[01:41:09] sweatshirt or just sweater in general

[01:41:11] kind of oversized boxy kind of

[01:41:13] cut that has a similar sort

[01:41:15] of tone but extra

[01:41:17] long t-shirt underneath

[01:41:19] that kind of layering I feel like it's really hot

[01:41:21] sounds really bad

[01:41:23] sounds like Shrek

[01:41:25] don't kill Ben's dream

[01:41:27] sorry I told Ben last week

[01:41:29] I invited him to a fashion week party

[01:41:31] and he was like oh man that's a bummer because you know

[01:41:33] that's like what I'm trying to get into these days

[01:41:35] he sounds like Brendan Frazier and Encino man

[01:41:37] oh man

[01:41:39] Ben is valiantly trying to

[01:41:41] step forward into the world of fashion

[01:41:43] yeah I've been reading GQ

[01:41:45] oh yeah that stands for gentlemen's

[01:41:47] quarterly yeah but it comes out every month

[01:41:49] I know it's fucked up but hey

[01:41:51] they should call a GM

[01:41:55] I think there's already a thing

[01:41:57] oh yeah the cars

[01:41:59] or the people who run

[01:42:01] sports teams the business side

[01:42:03] general managers they don't own

[01:42:05] those initials

[01:42:07] but the company sort of does

[01:42:09] alright what's going on

[01:42:11] guys we're just going off on a tangent

[01:42:13] I had to pee in the box

[01:42:15] we haven't even played the box office game and you have some

[01:42:17] segment lined up that's gonna be a nightmare

[01:42:19] so I love this movie I think it's a masterpiece

[01:42:21] they kill the alien queen

[01:42:23] and then Queen's great I like the bug mapping thing because that's a new element

[01:42:25] they don't really do the bug mapping thing on this

[01:42:27] early on they have Hudson tease it out

[01:42:29] I just like they always they set up everything in this

[01:42:31] movie slowly and diligently but he goes

[01:42:33] like what if there's like one

[01:42:35] where's the ants come from

[01:42:37] and they're like bigger than ants Hudson

[01:42:39] but you know they have a queen

[01:42:41] but I love that too is they like have Hudson

[01:42:43] spew this like there must be a queen

[01:42:45] shooting them out and there's like thousands of them

[01:42:47] and like you have him deliver that at our

[01:42:49] like one minute fifteen

[01:42:51] so you're like wait Hudson's the fucking idiot

[01:42:53] of course he's wrong about this and then like boom baby

[01:42:55] Hudson was right

[01:42:57] big old queen butt

[01:42:59] it's interesting that they've like

[01:43:01] presumably done bug hunts before because they were just like

[01:43:03] another bug hunt and then they wouldn't

[01:43:05] have had alien like bug aliens that also

[01:43:07] have a queen like that's a pretty

[01:43:09] standard sort of bug community form

[01:43:11] well yes friend yes friend

[01:43:13] yes they have done bug hunts before it is implied

[01:43:15] in the body of the film but

[01:43:17] in the words of switch not like this

[01:43:19] not like this

[01:43:21] switch would have been good

[01:43:23] Apoch would have been great Lucian and Apoch

[01:43:25] yeah Apoch and Apoch exactly

[01:43:27] I'm pushing that to CBS this fall

[01:43:29] bring him back those two guys box office game

[01:43:31] oh you want me to play the box office game

[01:43:33] alien's 10 out of 10 masterpiece

[01:43:35] I don't think I'm going to do well

[01:43:37] well the movie came out July 18th 1986

[01:43:39] I had been born on April 24th

[01:43:41] 1986 congrats humble brother

[01:43:43] yeah you know the Mets are on the way to their last

[01:43:45] World Series victory but it's still ongoing

[01:43:47] not my podcast

[01:43:49] Aliens opens

[01:43:51] number one at the box office with

[01:43:53] ten million dollars which at the time was a

[01:43:55] blockbuster opening quite a big opening

[01:43:57] ten million dollars on what like

[01:43:59] 1200 screens 1400

[01:44:01] I mean that would have been huge at the time

[01:44:03] very big at the time it ends

[01:44:05] up with 85 domestic

[01:44:07] something makes 10 million open

[01:44:09] it's a disaster

[01:44:11] yeah no totally so it opens

[01:44:13] yeah it opens great and

[01:44:15] it's the number one film of the weekend

[01:44:17] and do you want to guess number two it's a sequel

[01:44:19] number two

[01:44:21] is a sequel

[01:44:23] I believe the last scene takes place on a helicopter

[01:44:25] I believe it's a great clue for me

[01:44:27] it's so useful

[01:44:29] the last scene

[01:44:31] the reason I think of that is because I think the last

[01:44:33] film scene of this film takes place on a helicopter

[01:44:35] and then the first scene of the next film

[01:44:37] there is a third part

[01:44:39] is a little later and the actor

[01:44:41] has gotten considerably older

[01:44:43] and heavier

[01:44:45] but it like switches right to the

[01:44:47] next moment in time

[01:44:49] it's on a Rambo picture is it? it's not a Rambo

[01:44:51] but is it an action franchise? it's gonna be hard for you to guess this yeah it was a huge hit

[01:44:55] it was based on it was a sequel to one of the

[01:44:57] biggest hits of the decade

[01:44:59] it's a it's a weird one

[01:45:01] it's a weird one

[01:45:03] give me the genre

[01:45:05] inspirational kids movie

[01:45:07] problem child

[01:45:11] oh god

[01:45:13] how do I how do I sum up this

[01:45:15] helicopter one of the main actors has gotten heavier

[01:45:17] between two and three it's the first movie

[01:45:19] got an Oscar nomination for supporting actor

[01:45:21] oh oh oh oh oh

[01:45:23] Karate Kid Part 2

[01:45:25] Karate Kid Part 2

[01:45:27] no they didn't do that

[01:45:29] no dollar sign

[01:45:31] number three is

[01:45:33] number three is a great entry

[01:45:35] in the one of the greatest trends

[01:45:37] of 80s Hollywood cinema which is that Danny

[01:45:39] DeVito was a movie star

[01:45:41] ruthless people? yes

[01:45:44] remember when Danny DeVito was a like

[01:45:46] top build movie star

[01:45:48] for a while

[01:45:50] they'd be like yeah we should have another movie where Danny DeVito

[01:45:52] is the star of the film

[01:45:54] you know Danny DeVito? he'll be the star

[01:45:56] the greatest encapsulation

[01:45:58] he's from films

[01:46:02] the greatest encapsulation

[01:46:04] of white male privilege

[01:46:06] I mean you know look

[01:46:08] I'll leave daddy alone look an immense talent

[01:46:10] but I'm just saying

[01:46:12] not a conventional matinee idol in any way

[01:46:14] another non-conventional

[01:46:16] matinee idol is at number four

[01:46:18] a comedy film starring

[01:46:20] an older comedian who was very popular

[01:46:22] in the 80s well it has to be Rodney

[01:46:24] Rodney and was it back to school?

[01:46:26] it was back to school

[01:46:28] I'm giving you big hints but they're good

[01:46:30] you're not going to guess back to school otherwise

[01:46:32] Rodney

[01:46:34] how do you feel about back to school friend? do you have an opinion on

[01:46:36] the karate kid part two ruthless people or back to school?

[01:46:38] never seen any of these

[01:46:40] I'm 19 years old

[01:46:42] yeah that's true and you are a 5'8

[01:46:44] 5'8, 19

[01:46:46] bed press about 240

[01:46:48] I have seen karate kid 2

[01:46:50] I have not

[01:46:52] I have seen the first one

[01:46:54] have you seen the swank one?

[01:46:56] I have not seen the next karate kid

[01:46:58] that's the fourth

[01:47:00] but karate kid 3 is where Ralph Machio is like

[01:47:02] deep into his various

[01:47:04] substance addictions and just does not look good

[01:47:06] from the

[01:47:08] from the Rob Lowe roast

[01:47:10] yeah they really lit into him in that rob Lowe roast

[01:47:12] oh right yeah it's Ralph Machio from the rob Lowe roast

[01:47:14] you know the great comedian Ralph Machio

[01:47:16] he did a great job roasting at the roast

[01:47:18] did you see a set at the trump rally

[01:47:20] he's so good

[01:47:22] he's got this tight 10

[01:47:24] Machio tight 10

[01:47:26] yeah he's got a trunk on immigrants

[01:47:28] great number 5 is a

[01:47:30] hugely successful

[01:47:32] film about men who love each other

[01:47:34] about men who love each other

[01:47:36] they love each other so much but they don't know how to tell each other

[01:47:38] it's a buddy picture

[01:47:40] there's some buddies, there's some rivalries

[01:47:42] you know some good times

[01:47:44] there's a lot of abs

[01:47:46] top gun

[01:47:48] city slickers

[01:47:52] not a lot of abs in city slickers

[01:47:54] yeah that's what I decided

[01:47:56] Billy Crystal's abs

[01:47:58] Bruno Kirby's ripped in that movie

[01:48:00] how do you guys feel about Kropgun

[01:48:02] I like Terminator

[01:48:04] I've only seen it like bits and pieces on tv

[01:48:06] seems fun, I like movies where men are nice to each other

[01:48:08] yeah they're nice I mean they're a little mean

[01:48:10] but they love each other

[01:48:12] like Titanic I saw the 3D re-release and like that

[01:48:14] there was a 3D re-release

[01:48:16] I've been involved in

[01:48:18] oh my oh my

[01:48:20] I had a long conversation with Fran about

[01:48:22] ER earlier

[01:48:24] and so we did talk about Anthony Edwards

[01:48:26] Tony Edwards, Tony

[01:48:28] Dr. Green and Goose

[01:48:30] Tony Edwards

[01:48:32] about last night is in the top 10

[01:48:34] got Ferris Bueller's Day Off

[01:48:36] that was a big one

[01:48:38] yeah Big Chicago

[01:48:40] Michael Shann's Big Chicago Ferris's Little Chicago

[01:48:42] you've got a film by

[01:48:44] the director who you've worked with Ivan Reitman called

[01:48:46] Legals

[01:48:48] Robert Redford

[01:48:50] running scared

[01:48:52] club paradise

[01:48:54] Harold Ramis picture

[01:48:56] Robin Williams and Peter Rittul

[01:48:58] so Ramis had two films in the top 10

[01:49:00] he directed Back to School

[01:49:02] no he didn't

[01:49:04] I think he only wrote it

[01:49:06] I'm not sure who directed it actually

[01:49:08] he was credited at the top of Box Office Mojo

[01:49:10] but they don't do their homework

[01:49:12] so I think he directed Back to School

[01:49:16] what a wild weekend

[01:49:20] that's a wild matter

[01:49:22] nice things to pick from

[01:49:24] yeah it's a fun weekend right in the box office

[01:49:26] this is why I like the game

[01:49:28] I love this game I wish it was like

[01:49:30] the whole podcast

[01:49:32] oh no I should say if this is in the past 10 years

[01:49:34] I would do a better job of it

[01:49:36] but it's tough I'm so young

[01:49:38] yeah I see just 19 years old

[01:49:40] I was 14 and a half

[01:49:42] Frans been Benjamin Buttoning

[01:49:44] pretty hard film one two Oscars

[01:49:46] sound effects editing and visual effects

[01:49:48] and was nominated for editing

[01:49:50] score

[01:49:52] art direction

[01:49:54] best fucking actress

[01:49:56] to which Jack Teigen I went

[01:49:58] whoa

[01:50:00] she was also nominated

[01:50:02] Sigourney was also nominated for Golden Globe

[01:50:04] and yep she didn't win

[01:50:06] the film won the Hugo Award

[01:50:08] for Best Dramatic Presentation

[01:50:10] and she won an honorary Oscar for coolest

[01:50:12] fucking movie of all time

[01:50:14] that was the Thalberg that year

[01:50:16] was

[01:50:18] yeah David Lean presented it

[01:50:20] it was a good time

[01:50:22] Aliens so now Cameron's

[01:50:24] the big king shit

[01:50:26] now he has a blank check I would say

[01:50:28] and he's like I want to make an underwater

[01:50:30] romance movie I guess

[01:50:32] I'm going deep

[01:50:34] because I feel like the abyss is deep

[01:50:36] that was his pitch

[01:50:38] he just sang on the seas

[01:50:40] a movie that had not come out yet

[01:50:42] but he went to Alan Menken

[01:50:44] what's your awful bit that you want to do

[01:50:46] it's not awful first of all it's not awful

[01:50:48] great second thing I want to say is

[01:50:50] I'm sorry the reddit the redditors

[01:50:52] are going to be real mad at me

[01:50:54] well they're already angry because they ate the bagel

[01:50:56] the first thing I want to say is

[01:50:58] famously they

[01:51:00] film this picture

[01:51:02] in England in the United Kingdom

[01:51:04] and everybody at Pinewood Studios

[01:51:06] were to where I visited

[01:51:08] I know where he's going with this

[01:51:10] everybody in Britain on the crew

[01:51:12] was like fuck this guy we love Ridley Scott

[01:51:14] like who's this like

[01:51:16] nobody child like coming

[01:51:18] into direct this movie and Cameron

[01:51:20] is known for not really having

[01:51:22] he's a bossy pants

[01:51:24] he inspired the Tina Fey book

[01:51:26] he inspired the Tina Fey book and Tina Fey's whole career

[01:51:28] those are his hands

[01:51:30] they're his arms on the cover

[01:51:32] but also the book was originally supposed to be about James Cameron

[01:51:34] and he wouldn't allow it so she had to change the name to Tina Fey

[01:51:36] yeah I mean she pitched a James Cameron

[01:51:38] memoir she didn't want to write about herself

[01:51:40] she wanted to write about James

[01:51:42] you know he forced her hand but he did give her his hand

[01:51:44] yes but only for the cover

[01:51:46] his big man hands

[01:51:48] he's actually looking very skinny these days

[01:51:50] it's a little weird

[01:51:52] have you seen him recently?

[01:51:54] I'm worried

[01:51:56] I mean I'm sure he's fine maybe he's just stressed

[01:51:58] I'm gonna show you a pic

[01:52:00] he's got five-hour tarmoos

[01:52:02] it's known for not having like bedside manner

[01:52:04] he's like just knows what he wants

[01:52:06] he's exacting he doesn't mince words

[01:52:08] he gets it

[01:52:10] film production was a little more proper

[01:52:12] they go on tea breaks they work shorter hours

[01:52:14] apparently they would go on tea breaks

[01:52:16] he like flipped out about it

[01:52:18] there was like a whole thing I mean

[01:52:20] Sigourney talked about this at like

[01:52:23] that's a wild picture also

[01:52:25] it's a great picture

[01:52:27] I just showed Fran a picture of

[01:52:29] James Cameron and Sigourney Weaver

[01:52:31] with her sprite red carpet

[01:52:33] with two Cirque du Soleil performers in Body Stockings

[01:52:35] Body Stockings

[01:52:37] we saw this show Fran

[01:52:39] yeah I heard

[01:52:41] it's her bonus episode

[01:52:43] Sigourney looks

[01:52:45] like she's just gone from

[01:52:47] thrilled to horrified like that we're watching

[01:52:49] the transition happen

[01:52:51] her eyes are so afraid

[01:52:53] did you like it?

[01:52:55] it was an adventure

[01:52:57] it was an interesting time that we're gonna talk about

[01:52:59] on the pod

[01:53:01] it was my idea

[01:53:03] I'm happy I saw it

[01:53:05] I don't think it was a great show

[01:53:07] we went yes that's a better way to put it

[01:53:09] I got a great hoodie out of it

[01:53:11] but spoilers

[01:53:13] go on

[01:53:15] I don't want to misquote this story but I feel like

[01:53:17] what I remember was

[01:53:19] there was something where they wanted them

[01:53:21] to work overtime

[01:53:23] Cameron's hours

[01:53:25] and they were angry about that and they wouldn't pay for it

[01:53:27] Sigourney threatened to quit unless they paid

[01:53:29] every

[01:53:31] Sigourney did some boss moves

[01:53:33] but they were sort of at odds the whole time

[01:53:35] with him they didn't like him when they started to see

[01:53:37] the dailies they were like

[01:53:39] oh I guess this guy's fucking good but they were sort of arms crossed

[01:53:41] and he started rallying them together

[01:53:43] after a couple weeks of rough going

[01:53:45] he got everyone together and they all fought for his vision

[01:53:47] and then apparently he got up on like

[01:53:49] a soapbox and gave a speech

[01:53:51] at the rap

[01:53:53] that was like I want Ben

[01:53:55] okay alright hold on

[01:53:57] I'll get it

[01:53:59] Ben's got it

[01:54:01] the soapbox

[01:54:03] we're doing this bit again

[01:54:05] this is not a good bit

[01:54:07] it's one that we're doing a lot of

[01:54:09] let me walk up the soapbox

[01:54:11] yeah

[01:54:13] you haven't listened to the episode yet

[01:54:15] but we did a stupid bit like this a few weeks ago

[01:54:17] I'm James Cameron

[01:54:19] he gave the speech that was like

[01:54:21] I want you to know

[01:54:23] you're the laziest bunch of pieces of shit I've ever worked for

[01:54:25] this is unacceptable

[01:54:27] thank you for making my movie I will never work with you

[01:54:29] ever again you have no future in this business

[01:54:31] just like

[01:54:33] fucking told all of them off

[01:54:35] and I think this movie was like a turning point for him

[01:54:37] where he's like I don't fucking care

[01:54:39] he's just I'm a mean man

[01:54:41] he's got a blank check and B he was like I'm making the movies I want

[01:54:43] classically

[01:54:45] feelings be damned

[01:54:47] crew of the abyss we'll talk about it next week

[01:54:49] got shirts printed out that said life's abyss

[01:54:51] and then you die

[01:54:53] and they did not like working for James Cameron

[01:54:55] it's nice to do any job where you get a shirt though

[01:54:57] that is true

[01:54:59] and they did thank him later personally each one of them

[01:55:01] for letting us get a shirt

[01:55:03] see now Griffin I thought you were going to tell the story

[01:55:05] of the original DP of the film

[01:55:07] oh

[01:55:09] he did fire the original DP

[01:55:11] and replace him

[01:55:13] what's the name of that gentleman

[01:55:15] oh shit I don't know

[01:55:17] you seem to know

[01:55:19] what's his name

[01:55:21] he wanted to

[01:55:23] light the whole movie

[01:55:25] brightly what kind of a moron

[01:55:27] is this dick bush and Cameron was like

[01:55:29] no and he was like we're going to

[01:55:31] light it or I'm not move making the movie so they fired him

[01:55:33] and they're placed in with Adrian

[01:55:35] Biddle couldn't help myself

[01:55:37] who did a great job the look at this movies on

[01:55:39] a lot of it was shot at Acton Lane power station

[01:55:41] London the like sort of

[01:55:43] the way that the movie was shot

[01:55:45] and then

[01:55:47] station London the like sort of

[01:55:49] power plant shit like in the nest

[01:55:51] so that's cool

[01:55:53] brand I love a good warehouse

[01:55:55] movie yeah I agree it's a good warehouse

[01:55:57] movie could use more sparse

[01:55:59] terminator ends with big warehouse

[01:56:01] and Terminator 2 ends with like

[01:56:03] a smelting factory or whatever yeah

[01:56:05] I do that was I feel like when we were kids

[01:56:07] we

[01:56:09] thought that a lot like a lot of movies when we were kids

[01:56:11] ended with like then they go to a factory that makes

[01:56:13] lava like when we were kids lava

[01:56:15] was like a really important substance

[01:56:17] and like kind of scary

[01:56:19] very scary I feel like I think

[01:56:21] I thought there was a lot of lava in the world

[01:56:23] yeah yeah yeah yeah I was afraid

[01:56:25] that you were going to fall on lava

[01:56:27] Mario as well he falls in lava sometimes

[01:56:29] yeah it was like a really prevalent

[01:56:31] threat for a long time and now I don't

[01:56:33] even think about lava you know when would you ever think

[01:56:35] about lava

[01:56:37] I don't know great I agree

[01:56:39] Lord of the Rings ends with lava

[01:56:41] Lord of the Rings I think it's the last

[01:56:43] time I was sort of like huh that's the last

[01:56:45] time someone needs to throw something in lava to get rid

[01:56:47] of it yeah I mean we Tolkien very

[01:56:49] inspired by Terminator 2

[01:56:51] Revenge of the Sith

[01:56:53] Revenge of the Sith has lava of course

[01:56:55] you've never seen it

[01:56:57] I'm not 100% about this I'm not 100%

[01:56:59] but I feel like volcano has lava

[01:57:01] and the coast is toast oh yeah

[01:57:03] I bet Pompey did but I never saw it

[01:57:05] Pompey probably had some lava

[01:57:07] probably tried to like kind of reinvent with

[01:57:09] Kit Harrington yeah hey thanks for reminding me

[01:57:11] that Pompey existed yeah it's a good time

[01:57:13] I forgot about that

[01:57:15] it sure did it sure did Griffin

[01:57:17] the year is 19a set can't believe Ben put this

[01:57:19] fucking shit in the desk for the stupid bit

[01:57:21] this is the grossest looking fan I've ever seen

[01:57:23] it's covered in like grease and dirt

[01:57:25] yeah go ahead what

[01:57:27] hey David you've ruined the bit though

[01:57:29] that's the soapbox

[01:57:31] the year is 1986 what I was born

[01:57:33] which is great congratulations

[01:57:35] I'm a tourist

[01:57:37] Fox launches no merchandising

[01:57:39] campaign because the campaign for alien

[01:57:41] the original alien in 1979 was so

[01:57:43] disastrous with the parents protesting

[01:57:45] well you mean the merchandising campaign

[01:57:47] the ad campaign for alien is the greatest

[01:57:49] of the universe right but the merchandise campaign was a

[01:57:51] disaster I'm excited with parents

[01:57:53] this one time yeah I mean yeah

[01:57:55] if the parents maybe had a good idea there

[01:57:57] 1996 no merchandise

[01:57:59] right but then the mid 90s

[01:58:01] come along early 90s rather

[01:58:03] some years pass sure and Fox

[01:58:05] New Regine gets really into the idea

[01:58:07] of getting the alien franchise back up on its feet

[01:58:09] at this point they're starting to

[01:58:11] percolate aliens 3, aliens 4

[01:58:13] they have like 8 different

[01:58:15] writers writing scripts for 2 different movies

[01:58:17] at the same time they're like let's do 2 back to

[01:58:19] back let's get Ripley this we want

[01:58:21] to get alien back on the way on the radar

[01:58:23] right the Neuromancer guy wrote a treatment

[01:58:25] that's pretty good anyway carry on so they decide

[01:58:27] they're gonna do an alien Saturday morning cartoon

[01:58:29] show called operation

[01:58:31] Aliens really in which

[01:58:33] all the original Marines are still alive and

[01:58:35] just bug hunting every week

[01:58:37] but all of them have been reborn as

[01:58:39] like weird half cyborg people

[01:58:41] with backwards caps and like

[01:58:43] a little

[01:58:45] last nice there is you just like the idea

[01:58:47] of them being back it's nice when friends are back

[01:58:49] and they just yeah to hang out

[01:58:51] and hunt bugs so

[01:58:53] the show they like create

[01:58:55] like key art and they go to companies

[01:58:57] and there's a comic book yeah make puzzles

[01:58:59] this was a poster okay

[01:59:01] they were like make bedsheets

[01:59:03] you know like here's the key art of what it's all gonna look

[01:59:05] like and started to like here they did

[01:59:07] like test animation of like this and this is

[01:59:09] like a laser on his face

[01:59:11] they're all great and they're all like sort of

[01:59:13] G.I. Joe looks pretty intense though

[01:59:15] yeah I think this was like

[01:59:17] probably early 90s like X-Men

[01:59:19] style like big guns big muscles

[01:59:21] like this is a poem with like a robot arm

[01:59:23] and a back and he seems to be

[01:59:25] punching a shark in the face yeah and

[01:59:27] I think his t-shirt says no bugs on it

[01:59:29] well and that's the second part of it

[01:59:31] okay the other idea was

[01:59:33] that the aliens

[01:59:35] were now in this later became a corner

[01:59:37] stone of alien 3

[01:59:39] the aliens were going to take the form of different

[01:59:41] animals since the xenomorph is just

[01:59:43] right like say a xenomorph goes into a dog

[01:59:45] dog alien yes

[01:59:47] so hedgehog hedgehog alien so they were like

[01:59:49] we're gonna get fucking scorpion praying mantis

[01:59:51] bull like gorilla all this fucking

[01:59:53] shit they set up all this merchandise

[01:59:55] they did the cartoon show they like did the

[01:59:57] like five minute test animation and then we're like

[01:59:59] eh maybe not

[02:00:01] this is not for children

[02:00:03] right that's pretty scary I think that was the

[02:00:05] thing and the original both of the first

[02:00:07] two aliens are already movies yeah they were

[02:00:09] like this is a bad idea but at this point

[02:00:11] the merchandise had already been put into production

[02:00:13] so like a couple of years before

[02:00:15] alien 3

[02:00:17] but several years after aliens

[02:00:19] in relation to a cartoon

[02:00:21] show that never aired there was like

[02:00:23] a full line of like children's

[02:00:25] toys for alien that were

[02:00:27] based on all of these marines

[02:00:29] being like cyborgs now and also

[02:00:31] all the aliens being

[02:00:33] animals now so I want to pass this

[02:00:35] around this is like the robot cyborg

[02:00:37] crew

[02:00:39] and like the gorilla alien and the

[02:00:41] bull alien it's one of the weirdest

[02:00:43] toy lines in history

[02:00:45] these are I mean the aliens are awful

[02:00:47] yeah and you see like so scary

[02:00:49] Ripley looks like a sailor like she's got

[02:00:51] like the yellow bandana she's got like

[02:00:53] the yellow handkerchief oh my god

[02:00:55] yeah this looks cool the aliens do

[02:00:57] look awful god they look

[02:00:59] they got too many spikes they look

[02:01:01] really creepy they're all like really

[02:01:03] spiky mutated is bishop there I want to

[02:01:05] see if I can find the bishop one to show you

[02:01:07] yeah oh my god

[02:01:09] right bishop he's in the top

[02:01:11] right

[02:01:13] oh hell yeah now bishop

[02:01:15] is very strong he's very badass

[02:01:17] all of a sudden the lines the lines under

[02:01:19] his eyes are gone and he's just biceps

[02:01:21] yeah he's no longer like the sort of twitchy

[02:01:23] diplomat that he is in the movies

[02:01:25] now he's the hot robot we've come to yeah

[02:01:27] I mean he's visibly a robot where it's

[02:01:29] like part of the thing in the movie is that he just looks like

[02:01:31] actor Lantan Rinson he's now got like a

[02:01:33] metal head like he's got like a terminator

[02:01:35] head where like the flesh is barely holding on sunglasses

[02:01:37] sunglasses and a robot body hey look it's

[02:01:39] the 90s it's the early 90s I think it's

[02:01:41] a fast-name merchandise line I'll post pictures

[02:01:43] but it's a merchandise line that has like nothing to do with the actual

[02:01:45] he used to do this for the Star Wars podcast

[02:01:47] the merchandise spotlight so any chance he gets

[02:01:49] oh also I'll take it arcade game

[02:01:51] I'm gonna weigh my aliens

[02:01:53] it came out in 1990

[02:01:55] it was developed by

[02:01:57] Konami the same creators of Contra

[02:01:59] yeah it had a very similar gameplay

[02:02:01] but it was a little bit more advanced

[02:02:03] like you know graphics wise and it was

[02:02:05] I was obsessed with it I used to go to a

[02:02:07] pizza place and play it all the time

[02:02:09] that's Ben's arcade spotlight

[02:02:11] Contra famously was like one of the

[02:02:13] characters is clearly modeled after Arnold

[02:02:15] Schwarzenegger and Predator

[02:02:17] one of the characters is clearly modeled after

[02:02:19] Stallone and Rambo and then the aliens

[02:02:22] clearly modeled after the alien

[02:02:24] like Contra was like they picked the three big

[02:02:27] like franchises and just made a video game of it

[02:02:29] I'm running on extreme here me too

[02:02:31] yeah I don't want to talk about it

[02:02:33] film was aliens I love it

[02:02:34] is Contra the one with

[02:02:36] AB AB like back forth up

[02:02:38] yeah famous code yeah it's a famous

[02:02:40] oh that's because it's not on me

[02:02:42] Konami code right right okay and I'll give

[02:02:44] our listeners my famous code

[02:02:46] for making a great podcast episode

[02:02:48] asking Fran Hopner to be the guest

[02:02:51] that's true oh wow thank you so much

[02:02:53] how do you feel Fran oh I feel good

[02:02:55] thank you so much for having yeah it's a little hot

[02:02:59] Fran is very cool comic

[02:03:01] collected she's cool as a cucumber

[02:03:07] everyone's like we gotta we gotta go

[02:03:08] places that's not exciting stuff's

[02:03:10] happening Fran yeah and I'm just like

[02:03:12] I'm on vacation she's nine and a half

[02:03:14] yeah I was like trying to make plans

[02:03:16] with Fran and I was like what do you want to do

[02:03:50] she has a box of Ritz crackers

[02:03:52] come back anytime obviously we'll pay all the expenses

[02:03:54] yeah yeah yeah we're really weirdly flush

[02:03:56] with money right now this podcast has become

[02:03:58] very liquid I just want to make

[02:04:00] something clear to anyone listening to this

[02:04:02] podcast that is not true we would totally

[02:04:04] appreciate your money if you wanted to give us

[02:04:06] you have made a grand total of zero cents

[02:04:08] off of this podcast and also zero dollars

[02:04:10] yeah that's important because some people think

[02:04:12] oh well zero cents for five million dollars

[02:04:14] nope none of the dollars either

[02:04:16] no didn't you find some change a couple months back

[02:04:18] those were bitcoins

[02:04:20] yeah they were fucking bitcoins

[02:04:22] worthless and you can't use those at an arcade

[02:04:24] it'd be cool if you could though

[02:04:26] make sense alright Jesus Christ

[02:04:28] alright so we're done with aliens
