Blank Check returns with another new mini series, this time examining the filmography of directors the Wachowskis. And like the past investigations (George Lucas, M. Night Shyamalan), Griffin and David aim to discover how did Hollywood go on to give these auteurs free reign and what were the consequences?
Starting with 1996’s Bound, join the hosts as they discuss the greatness of Joey Pants, remembering the 90’s, Gina Gershon and the Sam Simon connection, plus why cell phones have ruined cinema.

[00:00:01] Blank Check with Griffin and David, Blank Check with Griffin and David
[00:00:09] Don't know what to say or to expect
[00:00:13] All you need to know is that the name of the show is Blank Check
[00:00:20] I had this image of you inside of me
[00:00:23] Like a podcast of me
[00:00:25] Okay! I don't remember that
[00:00:28] That's the opening line of the film
[00:00:30] And that's the opening line of a new miniseries
[00:00:33] Crack! You hear that sound?
[00:00:35] Is that us cracking open a new miniseries?
[00:00:37] Yeah, we've cracked it open
[00:00:39] Like a champagne bottle, we crack it open
[00:00:41] And then drink from each half
[00:00:43] I don't remember that
[00:00:45] That's the opening line, they repeat it
[00:00:47] That's the opening narration and it's like an in media res
[00:00:51] And they bring it back later on the phone
[00:00:53] I was trying to find the longer one
[00:00:55] Great, great, look, you know what we're doing great
[00:00:57] We don't need to go into this
[00:00:58] I'm David Sims
[00:00:59] I'm Griffin Newman
[00:01:00] Alright!
[00:01:01] This podcast is called Blank Check with surprise
[00:01:05] Griffin and David
[00:01:06] The two friends
[00:01:07] The two friends, maybe you heard of us
[00:01:10] This is a new miniseries
[00:01:12] Yeah it's our podcast, we talk about movies, talk about directors
[00:01:14] We just finished a big old series on a director
[00:01:18] Pottenight Shanicast
[00:01:19] And now we're gonna do a new one
[00:01:21] The Podchowski casters
[00:01:24] That's what it's called
[00:01:25] That's what it's called, the Podchowski casters
[00:01:27] Cause we're here to talk about the Podchowski's
[00:01:30] Yes, so this is, we like to pick directors
[00:01:34] Everyone's gonna want to do one off
[00:01:36] But we like to pick directors and go through the filmography
[00:01:38] And try to get a bigger sense of who these people are
[00:01:41] You know our friend JD Amato
[00:01:43] Past and possibly future guest of the show
[00:01:45] You love referencing this quote
[00:01:47] He said that he thinks all movies are about their filmmaker
[00:01:50] Sure
[00:01:51] And so it's interesting to look at a career
[00:01:53] Yeah
[00:01:54] You know and we're watching things in linear time
[00:01:56] So you see a movie, three years later
[00:01:58] A new movie comes out
[00:01:59] Yeah and then you're like okay
[00:02:01] But no, of course we're watching everything in this larger context
[00:02:03] But also in a condensed time period
[00:02:05] Which makes it interesting
[00:02:06] And we're watching movies made by directors
[00:02:08] Who get a blank check from Hollywood
[00:02:11] And that's the premise of our podcast
[00:02:13] That's the extensible promise of our podcast
[00:02:15] That's the extensible premise of this show
[00:02:18] And we came up with the Wachowskis
[00:02:21] Like six months ago
[00:02:23] And we're finally doing it
[00:02:24] If not longer, we had this idea almost
[00:02:27] Concurrent with the Shyamalan idea
[00:02:29] Cause we were like let's make sure we have two ideas
[00:02:31] You had Shyamalan and I had Wachowskis
[00:02:34] Yes
[00:02:35] That I think that was, we came up with a pretty
[00:02:37] You know similar time
[00:02:39] Now the Wachowskis at the time, interesting choice
[00:02:41] Now a more interesting choice
[00:02:43] Correct
[00:02:45] Born, Andy and Larry Wachowsky
[00:02:48] Sure
[00:02:49] I think about four years ago
[00:02:52] They were born four years ago?
[00:02:54] No, I'm saying four years ago
[00:02:56] I don't know the timeline
[00:02:58] I believe
[00:03:01] Larry came out as a transgender woman
[00:03:04] And reintroduced herself to the world
[00:03:07] As Lana Wachowsky
[00:03:09] Yeah, I think Lana came out sort of
[00:03:12] You know having
[00:03:14] It was a slow process
[00:03:16] But a Ramon Speed Racer came out so 2008
[00:03:18] So like eight years ago
[00:03:20] Already made their films very fascinating
[00:03:23] Sure, sure, sure
[00:03:25] Cause their films are very much
[00:03:27] Prominent Hollywood directors
[00:03:29] But who make pretty weird challenging movies
[00:03:32] For considering that
[00:03:34] In a big budget mainstream level
[00:03:36] Often on a big budget mainstream level
[00:03:38] Yeah but very odd mainstream studio films
[00:03:40] And they're also all about identity
[00:03:43] Absolutely
[00:03:44] And the sort of like transience of identity
[00:03:46] And our physical bodies in relation to our human spirit
[00:03:49] All these interesting things, right?
[00:03:50] Yeah
[00:03:51] So you start to look at it through that prism
[00:03:52] You go, huh, interesting
[00:03:53] Wow, yeah sure
[00:03:54] Right, well they used to be, you know
[00:03:56] They used to build themselves as the Wachowsky brothers
[00:03:58] And now they're the Wachowskis
[00:03:59] And you're like, oh that's crazy
[00:04:01] And I think they were erroneously
[00:04:03] In the wake of the Matrix
[00:04:04] Viewed as these hyper masculine filmmakers
[00:04:06] Yeah
[00:04:07] Cause people were looking at the wrong elements
[00:04:09] And they were tagged as like, and we'll get to this
[00:04:11] Yeah
[00:04:12] But they were tagged as like sort of the ultimate
[00:04:15] Like kind of nerdy bro types who like
[00:04:18] You know, like ladies with guns
[00:04:21] And like skin tights, you know
[00:04:22] I mean like the Matrix got ripped off
[00:04:24] In so many bad ways that maybe
[00:04:26] And maybe that sort of got tagged onto the Wachowskis
[00:04:28] Yes, I think people looked at the things
[00:04:31] That the people who didn't understand the Matrix
[00:04:33] And like violence, guns, exactly
[00:04:36] That kind of stuff
[00:04:37] About a month ago
[00:04:39] Yeah, really recently
[00:04:41] Really recently
[00:04:42] And much more like the
[00:04:44] Lana's transition was like
[00:04:46] Kind of like talked about for years
[00:04:48] And like you know
[00:04:49] There were murmurs and there was a while before
[00:04:51] She finally sort of came out publicly
[00:04:53] And dressed it and everything
[00:04:55] This was a sudden sort of much more like
[00:04:57] Surprising
[00:04:58] Yes
[00:04:59] At least for me, I mean I don't
[00:05:01] Follow too closely the personal lives
[00:05:03] Of most directors
[00:05:04] Yes
[00:05:05] Lily Wachowski
[00:05:07] The second Wachowsky sibling
[00:05:09] It came out that the Daily Mail
[00:05:11] Was about to out her
[00:05:13] And she took the bull by the horns
[00:05:15] In a very shitty situation
[00:05:17] As reflective of a garbage world
[00:05:19] I'm constantly reminded we live in
[00:05:21] We live in a garbage world
[00:05:22] One of these garbage worlds we live in
[00:05:24] And wrote a piece about her
[00:05:27] Journey to this point
[00:05:29] So you know statistically
[00:05:31] The odds of
[00:05:33] Two siblings
[00:05:35] In one family
[00:05:36] Being transgendered
[00:05:37] Very small
[00:05:38] Don't know nothing about
[00:05:40] Statistics
[00:05:41] I don't either
[00:05:42] I don't know
[00:05:43] It seems rare right
[00:05:44] Which makes it interesting
[00:05:46] And then you also go like
[00:05:48] Okay so there are two siblings in the same family
[00:05:50] They work together
[00:05:51] They're filmmakers
[00:05:52] We've never had a major transgender filmmaker before
[00:05:54] And now we have two of them
[00:05:55] They explore these themes in their movies
[00:05:57] In ways both major and their TV show
[00:06:00] In ways both major and minor
[00:06:02] And sort of you know obvious and subtextual
[00:06:05] Now that's not the only prism
[00:06:07] We're gonna view their films through
[00:06:09] I mean honestly
[00:06:11] When I proposed this as a blank check
[00:06:13] You know it's more obviously
[00:06:15] Kind of like Shyamalan
[00:06:17] These are guys who made the matrix
[00:06:19] And I use guys in a gender neutral sense
[00:06:21] But they made the matrix
[00:06:23] And it was a huge out of the box
[00:06:26] Crazy hit
[00:06:27] Unlike anything
[00:06:29] Anyone was prepared for
[00:06:30] This like weird R rated movie was this huge
[00:06:33] Like you know surprise smash
[00:06:35] And ever since then they've gotten to make
[00:06:38] The most bonkers movies
[00:06:40] Like you can imagine
[00:06:42] What the biggest budgets none of them have hit
[00:06:44] I mean you know
[00:06:45] Yeah none of them have really
[00:06:46] The matrix sequels
[00:06:47] I think we had a profit or whatever
[00:06:48] But we're disappointing relative to the original
[00:06:50] And like you know
[00:06:51] All of these movies were pretty much dislike
[00:06:53] Yeah
[00:06:55] And were other than matrix reloaded financial disappointment
[00:06:57] Always had fans but
[00:06:59] Critically disliked out of the gate
[00:07:01] You know almost always sort of rediscovered
[00:07:04] A couple years later maybe
[00:07:06] For their like traits you know their good stuff
[00:07:08] Like movies like Speed Racer
[00:07:10] Cloud Atlas
[00:07:12] Jupiter Ascending which we've talked about on this podcast
[00:07:14] I think in our very first episode
[00:07:16] We talked about how much we like Jupiter Ascending
[00:07:18] The Netflix series Sense8
[00:07:21] Which I think is coming back
[00:07:22] Yeah
[00:07:23] For a second season
[00:07:24] Yeah
[00:07:25] The Wachowskis
[00:07:26] The Wachowskis
[00:07:27] We're gonna talk about the Wachowskis
[00:07:29] We're talking about the first film today
[00:07:30] Bound
[00:07:31] So excited yeah we're gonna talk about Bound today
[00:07:33] But before we do
[00:07:34] Little house keeping
[00:07:36] Oh major house keeping
[00:07:37] Guys it's been a crazy time
[00:07:39] It's been a crazy time
[00:07:40] I've got a cold as well so if you can hear that in my voice
[00:07:42] Cause you folks at home
[00:07:44] Oh boy you just every Monday morning
[00:07:46] Yeah
[00:07:47] You open your podcast app
[00:07:48] Ooh nice clean episode
[00:07:49] And you're like oh hey
[00:07:50] Blank check
[00:07:51] Here we go
[00:07:52] Back stage
[00:07:53] Boy chaos
[00:07:54] Our schedule's been all over the place
[00:07:56] It's been a lot of difficulty getting
[00:07:59] Getting a new episode out every week
[00:08:01] Banking some up
[00:08:02] Not being for a while trying to sneak in
[00:08:03] Whatever
[00:08:04] Not important to you
[00:08:05] But this is what is important
[00:08:06] Last weekend we recorded two episodes in one go
[00:08:08] Yes
[00:08:09] We recorded the very secretive image on one
[00:08:11] Two very loopy episodes
[00:08:12] Very loopy
[00:08:13] We were feeling both pretty loopy
[00:08:14] When we were running behind
[00:08:16] Griffin's career has been very
[00:08:18] Chaotic as of late
[00:08:20] Yeah
[00:08:21] Very exciting
[00:08:22] Yeah
[00:08:23] Yeah
[00:08:24] Yeah
[00:08:25] Yeah
[00:08:26] So we recorded two at once
[00:08:29] We recorded the buried secret
[00:08:30] Which you've heard at this point
[00:08:31] Yeah a dissection of an unseen
[00:08:34] Movie that nobody watched
[00:08:35] Yeah that no one makes sense of
[00:08:36] Although I will say
[00:08:38] Our friend, friend of the show
[00:08:39] Caroline Anderson
[00:08:41] Works for Comedy Bang Bang
[00:08:43] Hey Caroline
[00:08:44] A wonderful human being
[00:08:45] Shout out Caroline
[00:08:46] I saw her recently
[00:08:48] And she told me that she in fact
[00:08:50] Not only watched
[00:08:52] Buried secret in preparation for her episode
[00:08:54] Oh boy
[00:08:55] But rewatched
[00:08:56] Because Caroline is
[00:08:58] To date the only person I've ever spoken to
[00:09:00] Who watched that live
[00:09:02] When it aired on the side of the channel
[00:09:04] Wow
[00:09:05] So she rewatched it
[00:09:07] That's crazy
[00:09:08] I didn't think anyway
[00:09:09] I thought I got a zero Nielsen rating
[00:09:10] Yeah I did too
[00:09:11] Apparently one person is so negligible
[00:09:13] They rounded down to zero
[00:09:14] But I think Caroline was the only one who watched it live
[00:09:16] We did that episode right
[00:09:18] And by the way if you've also
[00:09:19] If you've listened to it it's a thing
[00:09:21] It's a thing
[00:09:22] And you should give it a shot
[00:09:24] We were recording a second episode right after that
[00:09:26] We were filming Double Loopy
[00:09:27] This is an episode we had promised for a while
[00:09:29] We usually like to do a little palette cleanser
[00:09:31] It was a Sunday afternoon
[00:09:32] We like to do a little palette of Sherbert
[00:09:34] In between miniseries
[00:09:35] To cleanse the palette right
[00:09:37] Mmm
[00:09:38] Yeah we like to interspersed
[00:09:40] Yeah a little bonus between
[00:09:42] Major miniseries
[00:09:44] Right
[00:09:45] So we did a long promised
[00:09:47] Batman V Superman Don of Justice
[00:09:49] Episode that was alternately titled depending on who you ask
[00:09:51] Oh who cares what it was titled
[00:09:53] Griffin V David Donna Ben
[00:09:55] Or Watchman V BVS Don of Snyder
[00:09:57] Something dumb like that right
[00:09:59] Yeah
[00:10:00] We were pretty loopy
[00:10:02] It was pretty ramshackle
[00:10:04] Yeah it was the worst episode we've ever recorded
[00:10:06] I think bar none
[00:10:07] I was gonna try to talk around it but yeah
[00:10:08] It was the worst episode we ever recorded
[00:10:10] It was a piece of garbage
[00:10:11] I think about 45 minutes in
[00:10:12] We realized what was happening
[00:10:13] Yeah
[00:10:14] And we didn't save it
[00:10:16] But we at least we proceeded
[00:10:18] To just be weirder as a result
[00:10:20] We threw a lot of shit at the wall
[00:10:22] And then we sort of said to Ben
[00:10:23] Like well it was probably good 45 minutes
[00:10:25] Are there right
[00:10:26] We talked for an hour and a half
[00:10:27] I remember Ben when we were done recording
[00:10:29] Ben you just leaned in the microphone
[00:10:31] And it's like spoke to your engineer
[00:10:33] And just was like I'm sorry
[00:10:34] Yeah yeah no I was telling Brian
[00:10:36] Who helps edit the show
[00:10:37] In turn Brian
[00:10:38] I am so sorry
[00:10:39] This is gonna take a lot of time
[00:10:41] I don't want you to think that
[00:10:43] We haven't released this episode because
[00:10:45] It was bad
[00:10:46] We were gonna release it
[00:10:47] We have no vanity
[00:10:48] It was gonna go out there
[00:10:49] I believe in this being awards in all shell
[00:10:51] Right I think we as Holler and fans
[00:10:53] And I want you to understand the narrative
[00:10:55] Of what we're going through psychologically
[00:10:56] On a week to week basis
[00:10:57] But the Lord God himself
[00:10:59] Intervened
[00:11:00] Reached down from the sky
[00:11:02] And corrupted the audio of this episode
[00:11:04] So profoundly
[00:11:05] Like every
[00:11:06] Every
[00:11:07] Cannot be released
[00:11:08] Like once a minute
[00:11:09] Five seconds of audio dropout
[00:11:11] Is that accurate Ben
[00:11:12] Yes yes
[00:11:13] Is it more frequent than that
[00:11:14] You know it's like every few minutes or so
[00:11:16] Yeah a couple of seconds
[00:11:17] But enough where it's just like
[00:11:19] You lose context of the terrible things
[00:11:21] We're talking about
[00:11:22] Because yes we're talking about awful things
[00:11:24] But we're also in our classic style going like
[00:11:26] So fast through like so many dense different
[00:11:28] Like bits upon facts
[00:11:30] I mean literally we started this episode thinking
[00:11:32] We were gonna talk about Watchmen
[00:11:33] And Batman vs. Superman
[00:11:34] And our in we're like
[00:11:35] Oh I guess we're just not gonna
[00:11:37] We're just only gonna talk about
[00:11:38] Watchmen
[00:11:39] It was dense and it was messy
[00:11:41] Right
[00:11:42] Even it was yelling
[00:11:43] And so the audio
[00:11:44] I was yelling
[00:11:45] You're yelling
[00:11:46] The audio was so bad that we were like
[00:11:48] This episode is barely gonna make sense
[00:11:50] It already barely made sense
[00:11:52] It's not it's gonna be difficult to listen to
[00:11:54] So this is our current plan
[00:11:56] We had long promise that we were gonna do
[00:11:58] About M vs. Superman episode
[00:11:59] At this point the movie's been out a month
[00:12:01] I don't know if anyone
[00:12:02] Literally nobody cares about the movie
[00:12:03] Everyone's chewed it up digested it
[00:12:05] Shit it out ate the shit
[00:12:06] Shit it back out again right
[00:12:07] They ate the shit
[00:12:08] They did they ate the shit
[00:12:09] They drank the diarrhea
[00:12:12] They
[00:12:13] I made a face at this
[00:12:14] No one needed us to weigh in anymore
[00:12:16] Nope
[00:12:17] And I think about 15 minutes in the episode
[00:12:18] We were like oh no one needs us to weigh in
[00:12:20] No one does anymore
[00:12:21] But there was the much bally hoot
[00:12:23] Aspect that we were gonna cover
[00:12:25] It's true it was much bally hoot
[00:12:27] It was much bally hoot
[00:12:29] Yeah you
[00:12:30] I'll just summarize this
[00:12:32] You and Ben saw the fucking movie in 4DX
[00:12:35] Wait who?
[00:12:36] Oh Jesus
[00:12:37] Yeah wait David who are you talking about
[00:12:39] Oh here we go
[00:12:40] Producer Ben aka
[00:12:41] Produer Ben aka
[00:12:42] The Mendooser aka
[00:12:43] The Poet Laureate aka
[00:12:44] The Haws aka
[00:12:45] Mr. Positive aka
[00:12:46] The Tiebreaker aka
[00:12:47] Birthday Benny aka
[00:12:48] The Fuckmaster aka
[00:12:50] The Peeper yeah not
[00:12:52] Professor Crispy but he is
[00:12:54] Ben Night Shyamalan
[00:12:56] Yep
[00:12:57] Oh boy
[00:12:58] Hey everybody how you doing
[00:13:00] Kylo Ben right
[00:13:01] Yeah Kylo Ben but you know
[00:13:03] He's in there in the booth
[00:13:05] And then he means
[00:13:07] Oh Hello Fennel
[00:13:08] Hello Fennel we greet
[00:13:09] Yeah
[00:13:10] Hello Fennel
[00:13:11] No you and Ben saw it in 4DX
[00:13:13] Which is some sort of like radical like
[00:13:15] Punching technology like you know
[00:13:17] Viewing experience where the seat like
[00:13:19] Sucks your dick or whatever I don't like it's like
[00:13:21] It sprays you in your face with water
[00:13:22] Yeah it just sounds terrible
[00:13:23] First of all that's very crass
[00:13:24] The seat does not
[00:13:25] The seat does not suck your dick
[00:13:27] It performs fallatio upon you
[00:13:29] I'm a crass person and it sounded like
[00:13:31] A crass experience for a crass movie
[00:13:33] It was it's like if you wish that all
[00:13:35] Movies could be honey I shrunk the audience
[00:13:37] 4DX has risen to that challenge
[00:13:40] Yeah it's like that Terminator movie
[00:13:42] Where they face like the T1 million
[00:13:44] That's like a spider
[00:13:45] Oh it's like a Terminator 2 battle cross time
[00:13:47] Correct
[00:13:48] Which has been replaced by Shrek 4D
[00:13:50] Cause I recently went to
[00:13:52] Universal Studios two days ago
[00:13:54] And boy Shrek 4D
[00:13:56] Not a great movie
[00:13:57] Can I say this?
[00:13:58] Poorly written
[00:13:59] Shit really
[00:14:00] Like I walked out of it
[00:14:01] I heard Tom Stopper did a pass
[00:14:03] I walked out of it not being like
[00:14:05] A 3D amusement park ride
[00:14:06] I was like that's a bad movie
[00:14:08] Like that's a poorly directed
[00:14:09] Active and written film
[00:14:11] We don't care
[00:14:12] We're recording this episode late
[00:14:14] Because Griffin was held over in Los Angeles
[00:14:17] Because of his fancy job as a superhero
[00:14:19] In a TV show
[00:14:20] I was getting fitted for my superhero costume
[00:14:22] And let me tell the audience
[00:14:23] Cause I know they've been very invested in this
[00:14:25] I can assure you
[00:14:27] The costume, the current plan is for the costume to be
[00:14:29] Two separate pieces
[00:14:30] So I will be able to poop while wearing it
[00:14:33] But easily get out of it
[00:14:35] Did you talk to three time Academy Award winner
[00:14:37] Colleen Atwood about needing to poop?
[00:14:40] Absolutely not
[00:14:41] Cause she designed the costume am I correct?
[00:14:43] She did? Correct
[00:14:44] And she has three Academy Awards from 11 nominations
[00:14:47] Yep
[00:14:48] Can you guess the three wins?
[00:14:50] I know the three wins
[00:14:51] All for not great jobs in my opinion
[00:14:54] I think good work
[00:14:55] Memoirs of Agatia
[00:14:56] Not her best work
[00:14:57] Memoirs of Agatia is one
[00:14:58] Number two is Alice in Wonderland
[00:15:00] Correct
[00:15:01] Number three is Chicago
[00:15:02] Which is really well designed costumes
[00:15:05] The other ones, I hate those movies
[00:15:07] She did
[00:15:08] She's done so many great movies
[00:15:10] Oh yeah
[00:15:11] She's worked with Burton a million times
[00:15:12] Silence of the Lambs
[00:15:13] Correct
[00:15:14] She was a big Demi person at the beginning
[00:15:16] Yeah, Mars Attacks
[00:15:17] Gadica
[00:15:18] She designed the fucking Martian Spy Girl
[00:15:20] Which is one of my favorite looking characters of all time
[00:15:23] Yeah, Mars Attacks is a great design
[00:15:25] Anyway, let me say this
[00:15:26] Sweeney Todd
[00:15:27] Also like one of the most badass human beings I've ever met
[00:15:30] Oh yeah
[00:15:31] She's like a suffer no fools
[00:15:32] Mints no wards
[00:15:33] Makes sense
[00:15:34] Like awesome, awesome lady
[00:15:35] Costume designers man
[00:15:36] Yeah, so she's making a superhero suit
[00:15:39] To fit my stupid body
[00:15:40] Yeah
[00:15:41] And the stupid body it is
[00:15:42] It really dumb
[00:15:43] For you listeners at home
[00:15:45] I cannot oversell how dumb my body is
[00:15:48] Isn't it great that there might be new listeners
[00:15:50] To this episode by the way
[00:15:51] Yeah
[00:15:52] Like let's jump in at the podcast
[00:15:54] Pochowsky casters or whatever
[00:15:56] Yeah, and then you hear me talk about
[00:15:58] Being able to poop in a superhero costume
[00:16:00] I did not say anything to her
[00:16:02] We were like
[00:16:03] You were silent
[00:16:04] Fitting stuff
[00:16:05] I was totally silent the whole time
[00:16:06] We were like fitting stuff
[00:16:07] And then she was like throwing ideas
[00:16:08] And she was like what do you think
[00:16:09] If we like split this in two
[00:16:10] So it was like a jacket
[00:16:11] And a bottom part with a belt in between
[00:16:12] And I was like yeah, yeah, yeah
[00:16:13] No I think that sounds great
[00:16:14] I think that sounds great
[00:16:15] So she presented it and I heartily agreed
[00:16:18] So you're not in a jumpsuit
[00:16:19] Is what you're saying basically
[00:16:20] You're not in like a one piece
[00:16:21] Yeah
[00:16:22] No it's a little closer
[00:16:23] The current flash costume
[00:16:25] On the CW
[00:16:27] Where it looks sort of like two pieces
[00:16:28] But it's kind of continuous
[00:16:29] Yeah
[00:16:30] Yeah
[00:16:31] You know the flash poops a lot
[00:16:32] Good costume, I like it
[00:16:34] Was very hard for me not to cry
[00:16:36] When I saw myself in it
[00:16:37] Very exciting guys
[00:16:38] Can't wait for you folks to see it
[00:16:39] But anyway back to this
[00:16:40] We saw it in 4DX
[00:16:41] Oh yeah, no okay
[00:16:42] So let's just move on from this
[00:16:44] But we used guys saw the movie in 4DX
[00:16:46] We chatted about that for a while
[00:16:47] On this lost episode
[00:16:49] I think that section was the
[00:16:50] It might be worthy of release
[00:16:51] The one part of value
[00:16:52] So Ben's gonna go through
[00:16:53] Try to clean up the audio
[00:16:54] But I think we're gonna release it
[00:16:55] Like a 15 minute
[00:16:56] B-b-bonus episode
[00:16:57] Yeah you guys might get a little chunk
[00:16:58] Later in the week
[00:17:00] Just for funsy
[00:17:01] Cause that's the thing you want to hear
[00:17:02] It's just for funsy
[00:17:03] It's just for funsy
[00:17:04] So don't take it seriously
[00:17:06] Just stop taking us so fucking seriously
[00:17:08] And wait for the funsy episode
[00:17:09] And if it doesn't come out
[00:17:10] You know what tweet angrily
[00:17:12] At Ben Hoseley
[00:17:13] Ever since we got rid of on Podmas
[00:17:14] Everyone takes us so seriously
[00:17:16] Do they?
[00:17:17] So seriously
[00:17:18] Thanks for the Podmas right up
[00:17:19] Oh yeah thank you Rebecca
[00:17:20] I think we talked about that
[00:17:21] Yeah
[00:17:22] Okay
[00:17:23] Podcasting
[00:17:25] God jeez
[00:17:26] The Podchowski casters
[00:17:28] Jesus Christ
[00:17:29] I like that this is flipped
[00:17:30] Cause like last season
[00:17:31] I had a hard time with our title
[00:17:32] Yeah
[00:17:33] And this season
[00:17:34] You're having a tough time
[00:17:35] I mean I like it though
[00:17:36] I like the title
[00:17:37] Yeah
[00:17:38] Um
[00:17:39] Bound
[00:17:40] Yeah so
[00:17:41] The year is 1996
[00:17:42] That's correct
[00:17:44] The Wachowskis
[00:17:45] The Wachowskis are a couple of
[00:17:46] You know young
[00:17:48] Writers in Hollywood
[00:17:50] Midwestern
[00:17:51] Where they from
[00:17:52] Yeah they're from Chicago
[00:17:53] Yeah they're from Chicago
[00:17:54] Yeah
[00:17:55] They're Polish
[00:17:56] Like many of Chicago
[00:17:57] And you know
[00:17:58] They probably ate a lot
[00:17:59] Of Kielbasa
[00:18:00] And you know
[00:18:01] What do people do in Chicago
[00:18:02] Like Griffin Nooms over here
[00:18:03] Is also Polish
[00:18:04] I don't know if you know it
[00:18:05] Oh you?
[00:18:06] Yeah yeah
[00:18:07] I mean I have some
[00:18:08] Polish descent
[00:18:09] You know I mean it's Jews
[00:18:10] I think like 3 fourths
[00:18:11] Or something like that
[00:18:12] Mostly Lithuanian
[00:18:13] Eww
[00:18:14] So
[00:18:15] Yeah you know
[00:18:16] They are
[00:18:17] A couple of Chicago's
[00:18:18] And they went
[00:18:19] I think one of them
[00:18:20] Went to Bard College
[00:18:21] My brother's alma mater
[00:18:22] And one of them
[00:18:23] Went to Emerson College
[00:18:24] So you know nice
[00:18:25] Kind of goofy liberal arts
[00:18:27] You know arty schools
[00:18:28] And then they
[00:18:29] These guys are big thinkers right
[00:18:31] They wrote comic books
[00:18:32] A little bit I think
[00:18:33] I think they worked at Marvel
[00:18:34] In their younger years
[00:18:35] I believe so
[00:18:36] And I think they also
[00:18:37] Very quickly
[00:18:38] Yeah but they
[00:18:39] Start like script doctoring
[00:18:40] Doing passes
[00:18:41] Punch up
[00:18:42] Ecto kid
[00:18:43] They wrote a lot of like
[00:18:44] Clive Barker
[00:18:45] Remember Marvel had like
[00:18:46] Weird little Clive Barker stuff
[00:18:47] It was great
[00:18:48] But I think they also were
[00:18:49] Credit on assassins
[00:18:50] Well this is the thing
[00:18:51] They wrote a script for assassins
[00:18:52] Which was a crappy 1994
[00:18:54] Action movie starring
[00:18:55] Sylvester Stallone
[00:18:56] And Antonio Banderas
[00:18:57] When he was still figuring out
[00:18:58] How to like speak English
[00:18:59] And Julianne Moore
[00:19:00] Yeah
[00:19:01] Weird cast
[00:19:02] But you know Julianne Moore
[00:19:03] Post like her five minutes
[00:19:04] In the fugitive
[00:19:05] You know like early Julianne
[00:19:06] More
[00:19:07] Right but pre
[00:19:08] Like one of our
[00:19:09] One of our finest actresses
[00:19:10] On 42nd Street Julianne
[00:19:11] More yeah totally
[00:19:12] Yeah Julianne Moore
[00:19:13] Still figuring it out
[00:19:14] Anyway not a good movie
[00:19:15] No so did they write
[00:19:16] The original
[00:19:17] Where they were
[00:19:18] Their script
[00:19:19] That got butchered
[00:19:20] Warner Brothers picked it up
[00:19:21] And gave them like a two picture
[00:19:24] You know two script deal
[00:19:25] Or something as part of that
[00:19:26] Pickup
[00:19:27] Yeah
[00:19:28] Then director
[00:19:29] Later director
[00:19:30] Brian Helgeland
[00:19:31] Oscar winner
[00:19:32] Brian Helgeland
[00:19:33] Who wrote
[00:19:34] LA Confidential
[00:19:35] And directed a lot of movies
[00:19:36] He like rewrote the script
[00:19:37] He's credited to
[00:19:38] Richard Donner
[00:19:39] Made the movie
[00:19:40] It sucked and was
[00:19:41] It's huge bomb
[00:19:42] People didn't like it
[00:19:43] It's a bad movie
[00:19:44] I've seen like
[00:19:45] 20 minutes of it on TV
[00:19:47] If I'm not mistaken
[00:19:49] I believe they write
[00:19:51] The Matrix
[00:19:52] And present to Warner Brothers
[00:19:53] As one of the
[00:19:54] Two films in that deal
[00:19:56] And Warner Brothers
[00:19:57] They have two notes
[00:19:58] One of them is
[00:19:59] By all accounts
[00:20:00] This is the legend I've heard
[00:20:01] Is they return the script
[00:20:03] With a post-it note saying
[00:20:05] What is this
[00:20:07] Can you explain this to us
[00:20:09] We'll get to the matrix
[00:20:10] Right
[00:20:11] But by all accounts
[00:20:12] They were like
[00:20:13] I'm not saying it's good
[00:20:14] I'm not saying it's bad
[00:20:15] They just literally
[00:20:16] Had that script
[00:20:17] Don't understand the script
[00:20:18] So the Wachowski sat down
[00:20:19] Explained the matrix
[00:20:20] The look
[00:20:21] Understood
[00:20:22] You know
[00:20:23] Here's how it's gonna make sense
[00:20:24] Visually all of this
[00:20:25] And Warner said
[00:20:26] Okay now we get it
[00:20:27] And we like it
[00:20:28] We have no faith
[00:20:30] That you can pull off
[00:20:31] A movie of this size
[00:20:32] You haven't directed a movie before
[00:20:33] Absolutely
[00:20:34] So they said
[00:20:35] Like if you've made another film
[00:20:37] We feel a lot more comfortable
[00:20:38] Yeah a lot of this
[00:20:39] Legend
[00:20:40] That I've also heard
[00:20:41] Is from Joel Silver
[00:20:42] Who is the producer
[00:20:43] Of The Matrix
[00:20:44] And is a legendary Hollywood fatso
[00:20:46] Awesome man
[00:20:47] Who wears Hawaiian shirts
[00:20:48] And has produced a million movies
[00:20:50] Half of them awful
[00:20:51] Half of them great
[00:20:52] Can I tell a really good
[00:20:53] Quitside bar story
[00:20:54] Sure
[00:20:56] My father would bring me to like
[00:20:58] You know
[00:20:59] Things sometimes
[00:21:00] I mean Joel Silver is a parody
[00:21:02] Of a Hollywood producer
[00:21:03] And I love the man
[00:21:04] And I think he's made a lot
[00:21:05] Of fun movies
[00:21:06] And he's always fun on camera
[00:21:07] In like
[00:21:08] You know documentaries
[00:21:09] And DVD extras and stuff
[00:21:10] Yes
[00:21:11] He's just kind of a hilarious
[00:21:12] Like
[00:21:13] Oh the bo- you know
[00:21:14] Go ahead go ahead
[00:21:15] My grandmother works at a film festival in France
[00:21:17] Right
[00:21:18] An American film festival in France
[00:21:19] Oh boy
[00:21:20] They
[00:21:21] One year when I was like
[00:21:22] 12 or 13
[00:21:23] Were doing a tribute to Joel Silver
[00:21:25] Sure
[00:21:26] So there was this big Joel Silver thing
[00:21:28] And my dad was like
[00:21:29] 48 hours die hard
[00:21:30] All his class
[00:21:31] Yeah
[00:21:32] The Matrix
[00:21:33] The Hudson Hock
[00:21:34] Hudson Hock
[00:21:35] So my dad was like
[00:21:37] Do you want to come to this party
[00:21:38] Because I was a big fan
[00:21:39] Of a lot of Joel Silver movies
[00:21:40] Right
[00:21:42] And
[00:21:43] He's talking to someone who's like
[00:21:45] I will not name him
[00:21:47] For the sake of
[00:21:48] You know not
[00:21:49] Go ahead go ahead
[00:21:50] He was a hire up at Warner Brothers
[00:21:51] At the time
[00:21:52] Which is where Joel Silver was situated
[00:21:54] That's where his shingle
[00:21:55] Was played
[00:21:56] Silver pictures
[00:21:57] Right
[00:21:58] And my dad went up to him
[00:21:59] Said hey how are you doing
[00:22:00] Went hey how are you
[00:22:01] Da da da da da
[00:22:02] This and that
[00:22:03] And there was a woman
[00:22:04] Standing close by
[00:22:05] But none of us knew who
[00:22:06] The woman was
[00:22:07] Right
[00:22:08] Okay
[00:22:10] The Warner Brothers
[00:22:12] My dad said to the Warner Brothers guy
[00:22:14] Hey this is my son Griffin
[00:22:16] He's 12 and he hates Hollywood phonies
[00:22:18] Which I don't know why dad said that
[00:22:19] My dad would always try to
[00:22:20] Create a fucking
[00:22:21] Context for me
[00:22:22] Right
[00:22:23] Whatever it's a funny line
[00:22:24] And the Warner Brothers guy goes
[00:22:25] Well
[00:22:26] You want to talk about phonies
[00:22:28] This fat disgusting fuck
[00:22:30] In the ice cream colored suit
[00:22:32] Over there
[00:22:33] And he points over to Joel Silver
[00:22:34] And he goes this is the grossest
[00:22:35] Phonious
[00:22:37] Blowhardiest
[00:22:38] Like 18
[00:22:39] Does he know it's Joel Silver?
[00:22:41] 100%
[00:22:42] He's like a higher up at Warner Brothers
[00:22:43] Where Joel Silver
[00:22:44] And he's just ragging on Joel Silver
[00:22:45] And he's like
[00:22:46] I'm gonna have fun saying this to this kid
[00:22:47] Right
[00:22:48] And he's ragging on Joel Silver
[00:22:49] And he's like
[00:22:50] Piece of shit phony in this entire business
[00:22:52] And then the woman goes
[00:22:53] Hey that's my brother
[00:22:55] Oh wow
[00:22:57] That's crazy
[00:22:58] That's a good story right
[00:22:59] Decent story
[00:23:00] Yeah decent story
[00:23:01] Did he apologize
[00:23:03] He went
[00:23:04] This is what my dad did
[00:23:05] My dad went
[00:23:06] Of course he is and we love him very much
[00:23:07] Grif I think it's getting late
[00:23:08] We should head home
[00:23:09] My dad immediately removed himself
[00:23:10] From that situation
[00:23:11] Get out of there
[00:23:12] Pistol Pete Newman does not like
[00:23:14] Social
[00:23:15] Discom
[00:23:16] Awkwardness
[00:23:17] Anyway so Joel Silver has often said
[00:23:19] I think what you're about to say
[00:23:20] Which is like you know
[00:23:21] Walters was like
[00:23:22] Okay this matrix
[00:23:23] I don't know
[00:23:24] But we need something from you guys
[00:23:25] To prove that you can direct
[00:23:27] You're untested
[00:23:28] This is a huge project
[00:23:29] And so Silver says they made
[00:23:30] Bound as like an audition piece
[00:23:32] Like you know it's like
[00:23:33] Here we are
[00:23:34] This is a small budget movie
[00:23:35] But like you know
[00:23:36] Look where we're putting the camera
[00:23:37] Look at like how we're
[00:23:38] Like turning a little
[00:23:40] Into a lot basically
[00:23:41] This was like a one or two million
[00:23:42] Dollar movie
[00:23:43] No this is a little more
[00:23:44] I think it was a six million
[00:23:45] Yeah six million dollar movie
[00:23:47] Okay
[00:23:48] And so the Wachowskis
[00:23:49] I read interviews where they've said
[00:23:51] Like oh that's a little over
[00:23:52] You know we wanted to make bound
[00:23:53] You know essentially
[00:23:54] Like but who knows
[00:23:55] How do they want to make bound
[00:23:56] And it fits into a nice mythology
[00:23:57] It's certainly interesting
[00:23:58] That they made a pretty small budget
[00:24:00] Movie that basically takes place
[00:24:02] In two rooms
[00:24:03] Yeah
[00:24:04] There are two apartments
[00:24:05] That's like 90% on sound stages
[00:24:07] Correct
[00:24:08] And then of course transition to
[00:24:10] The most definitive action epic
[00:24:13] Sci-fi masterpiece of cinema
[00:24:16] That has not yet been equal
[00:24:17] Yeah I don't mean to imply that
[00:24:19] Bound was like means to an end
[00:24:20] No no I don't think so
[00:24:21] I think it's a fully passionate
[00:24:23] Film affairs that they wanted to make
[00:24:24] But I also think it was like
[00:24:27] Strategically like
[00:24:29] Even you look at how much
[00:24:30] Style is in this film
[00:24:32] And it's like they want to show
[00:24:33] With limited resources what they can milk
[00:24:36] And you talk about
[00:24:38] I mean like that the matrix is something
[00:24:40] That hasn't sort of been met since then
[00:24:42] It hasn't
[00:24:43] I have often said that like
[00:24:44] Maybe Mad Max
[00:24:45] Yeah but I mean
[00:24:46] I know it's 99
[00:24:48] But let's say like 21st century
[00:24:50] I think the two movies of the 21st century
[00:24:52] Love them or hate them whatever you think
[00:24:54] Yeah yeah yeah
[00:24:55] That like came in with like a completely
[00:24:57] New aesthetic
[00:24:58] New aesthetic that hadn't been crystallized
[00:25:00] Before elements before
[00:25:01] And sort of changed the game
[00:25:03] Are the matrix
[00:25:04] And I would argue the second one is
[00:25:05] Napoleon Dynamite
[00:25:07] I'm not even going to begin to discuss that
[00:25:09] I said love it or hate it
[00:25:10] Not going to begin to discuss that
[00:25:11] But you know what I'm saying
[00:25:12] Both of those movies
[00:25:13] That's a whole other thing
[00:25:14] That's in the, that's whatever
[00:25:15] But I say this to make a point
[00:25:16] Where it's like
[00:25:17] You rarely get something where it's like
[00:25:19] Well now the whole things changed
[00:25:21] And now you're going to get
[00:25:22] 20 years of people
[00:25:23] I'm not getting sucked into a conversation
[00:25:24] About Napoleon Dynamite
[00:25:25] I'm trying to refocus this on the matrix
[00:25:26] Okay
[00:25:27] But I'm saying I think they had
[00:25:28] Similar effects on their respective genres
[00:25:30] And I think the matrix
[00:25:32] Yeah it's like
[00:25:33] Everything exists in the shadow of the matrix
[00:25:35] Now to one degree or another
[00:25:36] We live in a post matrix culture
[00:25:38] We do
[00:25:39] And if you're making like an action film
[00:25:40] If you're making a sci-fi film
[00:25:41] If you're making anything like that
[00:25:42] You're either influenced by the matrix
[00:25:44] Or you're consciously choosing
[00:25:46] To not like copy the matrix
[00:25:48] Do you know what I'm saying
[00:25:49] I do
[00:25:50] What
[00:25:51] But let's talk about the matrix next week
[00:25:52] Yes
[00:25:53] We'll talk about it
[00:25:54] I'm just going to set this
[00:25:55] No I agree with you
[00:25:56] I agree with you
[00:25:57] And like they're bound to sort of
[00:25:59] Bound to the matrix
[00:26:00] Oh
[00:26:01] Alright
[00:26:02] But I mean bound comes out in 96
[00:26:04] David
[00:26:05] That is too many
[00:26:09] You know it comes out three years
[00:26:11] Before the matrix comes out in 96
[00:26:13] And I was talking about it
[00:26:15] With producer Ben before
[00:26:17] It kind of has that great
[00:26:19] Trashy 90s vibe
[00:26:22] That is so common to so many
[00:26:24] Like 90s crime thrillers
[00:26:26] Yes
[00:26:27] Kind of the after effects of DiPalma
[00:26:29] Kind of like washing up on the shore
[00:26:31] All these crappy DiPalma knockoffs
[00:26:33] Barbat Trotter's Kiss of Death
[00:26:35] You know and then mixed in
[00:26:37] With the Tarantino
[00:26:39] We can just do pulpy noir movies again
[00:26:41] Right
[00:26:42] I don't know
[00:26:43] Things to do in Denver when you're dead
[00:26:45] Like all these forgotten 90s
[00:26:48] Pretty much every David Caruso film
[00:26:50] I said Kiss of Death but also Jade
[00:26:52] Sliver or silver
[00:26:55] I always forget
[00:26:56] I think it's sliver
[00:26:57] How about Truromance
[00:26:58] Yeah Truromance
[00:26:59] You know that's the Tarantino thing
[00:27:01] But yeah you know exactly
[00:27:02] Like it's just
[00:27:03] It's like
[00:27:04] What's it about
[00:27:05] A bunch of garbage people
[00:27:06] What do they do
[00:27:07] They fucking kill each other
[00:27:08] Over what?
[00:27:09] Eh money
[00:27:10] Like here's the thing
[00:27:12] Is there some sex
[00:27:13] Yeah
[00:27:14] If you were flipping through the channels
[00:27:16] I think it's a smarter movie
[00:27:17] Than the movies we're talking about
[00:27:18] But it adds that vibe
[00:27:19] Well this is what I was going to say
[00:27:20] If you're flipping through the channels
[00:27:22] You know like cable 98
[00:27:23] Pre DVR
[00:27:24] So you can't get info on the tile you're watching
[00:27:26] Right
[00:27:27] If you're flipping through
[00:27:28] If you saw like two seconds of bound
[00:27:30] You'd be like
[00:27:31] Isn't that sort of red shoe diaries
[00:27:32] Yeah because it has a slightly
[00:27:33] Stilted quality of the dialogue
[00:27:35] You know it starts Jennifer Tilley and Gina Gershon
[00:27:37] Yeah
[00:27:38] Gershon
[00:27:39] Gina Gershon
[00:27:40] I always thought of Gina Gershon
[00:27:41] Yeah
[00:27:42] Who are not like
[00:27:43] You know renowned Thespians
[00:27:45] Otherwise they're good actors
[00:27:46] Both of them
[00:27:47] Yeah
[00:27:48] But you know
[00:27:49] I mean like Gina Gershon's probably
[00:27:50] Most famous for showgirls
[00:27:51] Yes
[00:27:52] A movie that is known for being
[00:27:53] Like
[00:27:54] You know
[00:27:55] Right
[00:27:56] Like the looks of this kind of movie
[00:27:57] Right
[00:27:58] Paul Verhoeven
[00:27:59] I forgot to mention him
[00:28:00] You know like basic instinct showgirls
[00:28:01] All the Joe
[00:28:02] By the way
[00:28:03] I would love to fucking do a blank check
[00:28:04] Because he's one of my favorite filmmakers
[00:28:05] Love Verhoeven
[00:28:06] Great
[00:28:07] Yeah
[00:28:08] But showgirls is a film that was like
[00:28:09] Notorious for how disastrous it was
[00:28:11] And now has forgotten
[00:28:12] They've come out a year before bound
[00:28:13] I think
[00:28:14] It's 95 I think
[00:28:15] And there's like a balance between people
[00:28:16] Who like love
[00:28:17] Because they think it's terrible
[00:28:18] And people who think it's brilliant
[00:28:19] And other people don't get it
[00:28:20] Yeah
[00:28:21] But it's like
[00:28:22] You know
[00:28:23] Oh let's get the second lead from a movie
[00:28:24] That just lost a tremendous amount of money
[00:28:25] And the reason they got her I think is because
[00:28:27] She's perfect for the role
[00:28:28] And perfect in the movie
[00:28:29] So good
[00:28:30] Right
[00:28:31] Same for Jennifer Tilly
[00:28:32] Jennifer Tilly coming off an Oscar nomination
[00:28:33] For the bullets of Broadway
[00:28:34] I'm doing the one thing she can do
[00:28:36] Let's say that
[00:28:37] A well deserved Oscar nomination
[00:28:39] I think Jennifer Tilly's great
[00:28:40] But she's definitely
[00:28:41] You know
[00:28:42] Yeah
[00:28:43] You know she's got like
[00:28:44] She's like a sort of a breathy
[00:28:45] Yeah
[00:28:46] Sex spot
[00:28:47] Like she's awesome
[00:28:48] But she does like one thing
[00:28:49] Really really really really well
[00:28:50] I'll say this about both Gina Gershon
[00:28:52] And Jennifer Tilly
[00:28:53] And she's an incredible poker player
[00:28:55] Yeah
[00:28:56] Well I want to talk about Jennifer Tilly a little
[00:28:57] Because her life is a little fascinating
[00:28:59] Jennifer Tilly had been around for years
[00:29:00] Yeah
[00:29:01] Just doing stuff
[00:29:02] She played a Gary Shanley's
[00:29:04] Girlfriend on its Gary Shanley show
[00:29:06] Yeah
[00:29:07] Absolutely
[00:29:08] She's in
[00:29:09] Yeah
[00:29:10] She on that
[00:29:11] She like pops up in things like
[00:29:13] I don't know like the fabulous
[00:29:14] Baker boys and the doors and stuff
[00:29:15] You know like she'll just sort of
[00:29:16] Like have little bit parts and stuff
[00:29:18] And then she just gets
[00:29:19] Her sister Meg Tilly in Academy Award
[00:29:20] Nominating
[00:29:21] I was going to say Meg Tilly
[00:29:22] She just gets an Academy Award nomination
[00:29:24] When she's hysterically funny
[00:29:25] In Bullets Over Broadway
[00:29:26] And she's like a perfectly cast
[00:29:27] Taylor maid role
[00:29:28] Right
[00:29:29] Absolutely
[00:29:30] But she on its Gary Shanley show
[00:29:32] Meets
[00:29:34] Sam Simon
[00:29:35] Oh sure the writer
[00:29:36] Perdigio's comedy writer producer
[00:29:38] RIP Sam Simon
[00:29:39] Recently
[00:29:40] The youngest showrunner ever
[00:29:41] In network television history
[00:29:43] Okay
[00:29:44] They get married
[00:29:46] They get divorced soon after
[00:29:47] And post divorce
[00:29:49] He becomes one of the creators
[00:29:51] Of the most popular executive producer
[00:29:52] On The Simpsons
[00:29:53] Yeah
[00:29:54] He leaves The Simpsons after season 2
[00:29:56] I believe
[00:29:57] 3 maybe
[00:29:58] Or after the early you know
[00:29:59] But as executive producer
[00:30:01] And co-creator
[00:30:02] It's always there
[00:30:03] He retains residuals
[00:30:05] For all aspects of the show
[00:30:07] Impermptuity
[00:30:08] And so a
[00:30:09] Legend that I love
[00:30:11] Is that Jennifer Tilly has never
[00:30:12] Remaried because the second she remarries
[00:30:14] She stops becoming entitled to
[00:30:17] Spousal support
[00:30:18] Oh I see because they divorce
[00:30:19] But it's like right
[00:30:20] But now Sam Simon is deceased
[00:30:22] So I don't know
[00:30:23] Jennifer Tilly is also like
[00:30:24] Like
[00:30:25] A world series of poker
[00:30:27] Like winner
[00:30:28] Jennifer Tilly is like low key
[00:30:30] One of the best poker players in the world
[00:30:32] Jennifer Tilly is like swimming in money
[00:30:35] But I just always like the idea
[00:30:37] That like any man she ended up with
[00:30:39] Was just like just so you know
[00:30:41] There's no possible world in which we get married
[00:30:44] Cause I'm on that Simpsons train
[00:30:46] Hey I don't know I mean look
[00:30:47] If you got it flaunt it yeah
[00:30:49] Jennifer Tilly and Gina Gershaw
[00:30:51] I think both fall into a category
[00:30:52] They're like loaded gun actors for me
[00:30:54] Where it's like
[00:30:55] It's a lot of responsibility
[00:30:57] If you're gonna put them in a movie
[00:30:58] You gotta know how to use them
[00:30:59] This is the thing
[00:31:00] I don't want to dis-either them
[00:31:01] Cause they're both fantastic
[00:31:02] I'm not dissing you either
[00:31:03] No I know you're not
[00:31:04] But it's like if you look at Jennifer Tilly
[00:31:05] Is like IMDB page
[00:31:07] It's just like there are these nice little moments
[00:31:09] In it like bullets over the Broadway
[00:31:11] Bullets over the Broadway
[00:31:12] Bullets over the Broadway
[00:31:13] Celia in Monsters Inc
[00:31:15] Celia the receptionist
[00:31:16] She's got one of the most distinctive voices
[00:31:19] Like you could still do a Jennifer Tilly impression
[00:31:21] And people would still get it
[00:31:22] Even though Jennifer Tilly is not like
[00:31:24] In a lot of movies these days
[00:31:26] You could do a Jennifer Tilly
[00:31:27] It's pretty good
[00:31:28] It's pretty good
[00:31:29] A little breath here but it's pretty good
[00:31:31] Jennifer Tilly
[00:31:32] You know and then like she's in like
[00:31:33] Bride of Chucky
[00:31:34] But she's also in
[00:31:35] 50 million other movies
[00:31:37] That you've never heard of
[00:31:38] Correct
[00:31:39] Love her
[00:31:40] I mean she's in Liar Liar
[00:31:41] Which I've seen a million times
[00:31:42] Yes
[00:31:43] And she's very funny
[00:31:44] I mean I'm not dissing either actress
[00:31:46] But I think they both
[00:31:47] Gina Gershon is like more of like
[00:31:49] A great classy stage actress
[00:31:51] Who does like all this amazing stuff
[00:31:53] On Broadway and off Broadway
[00:31:54] And then also kind of like
[00:31:56] A queen of Hollywood trash
[00:31:58] For some reason
[00:31:59] Right
[00:32:00] As a movie start
[00:32:01] Let's just say
[00:32:02] The Gina Gershon like Hollywood persona
[00:32:04] As a character
[00:32:05] In line with like the Jennifer Tilly persona
[00:32:07] Are both things where like
[00:32:09] I think they're incredibly
[00:32:11] Strong actresses
[00:32:13] So good
[00:32:14] When well used
[00:32:15] But in the hands of bad directors
[00:32:17] They can both be catastrophic
[00:32:18] Yeah cause the bad directors
[00:32:19] Or you know we'll just be like
[00:32:20] Yeah you'll just play like
[00:32:21] The other woman
[00:32:22] Or you'll play like
[00:32:23] Some sort of like tempting lady
[00:32:25] Or like some kind of mean Hollywood lady
[00:32:27] Or something
[00:32:28] I don't know
[00:32:29] She's in what she's in like
[00:32:30] Let me look at her now
[00:32:31] She's in like red heat and cocktail
[00:32:32] She's in the player
[00:32:34] Those are like her early roles
[00:32:36] And then after again
[00:32:37] It's like after
[00:32:39] That nice year with Bound
[00:32:41] It's like
[00:32:42] What's she like the 14th lead in face off
[00:32:44] What is she in face off
[00:32:45] Oh she is Nicholas Cage's baby mama
[00:32:48] In that film
[00:32:49] Right right right
[00:32:50] Who John Travolta as Cage
[00:32:52] Like teams up with
[00:32:53] You know she's like pops up in good movies
[00:32:55] Like the insider
[00:32:56] But she's not like a major part of them
[00:32:58] I'm sorry
[00:32:59] I just need to correct my previous statement
[00:33:00] Do you know who Gina Gershon is in face off
[00:33:02] Sure
[00:33:03] She's the person to whom
[00:33:04] Nicholas Cage says
[00:33:05] I'm gonna take his face off
[00:33:07] Oh yeah that's right
[00:33:08] That immortal line is delivered to
[00:33:10] Gina Gershon
[00:33:11] With the hand motion
[00:33:12] Yeah for the listener at home
[00:33:13] We're doing the motion
[00:33:15] But you know I mean again
[00:33:17] You know she's like a Tony nominee actress
[00:33:19] I love Gina Gershon
[00:33:21] I do too but yeah
[00:33:22] People can misuse her
[00:33:23] It's a loaded gun
[00:33:24] You know it's like
[00:33:25] You've really gone down a long road
[00:33:26] With these two actresses
[00:33:27] I think it's important to state
[00:33:28] Because it's like if you
[00:33:30] Walk in through a video store
[00:33:32] In 1997 and you see a box
[00:33:34] And it's like oh here's an erotic thriller
[00:33:35] Starting Jennifer Tilley and Gina Gershon
[00:33:37] You go ooh that sounds dangerous
[00:33:39] I mean it sounds
[00:33:40] That's risky
[00:33:41] That's a good call
[00:33:42] I mean in England it's rated 18
[00:33:44] Which is in England the highest rating
[00:33:46] You know in things aren't rated R
[00:33:47] They're rated like 15 or 18
[00:33:49] Most movies are rated 15
[00:33:51] You have to be extremely violent
[00:33:53] Or extremely explicitly sexual
[00:33:55] To get an 18
[00:33:56] It's got a bit of both
[00:33:57] And it's got a little bit of both
[00:33:58] And 18 is like a red
[00:34:00] Like circle with an 18 in it
[00:34:02] So it really kind of has like
[00:34:04] A slightly scarlet lettery
[00:34:05] Like this is a you know intense
[00:34:07] Bad movie
[00:34:08] And so when you see it on the VHS
[00:34:10] Shelf you're like ooh okay alright
[00:34:12] This looks gamey
[00:34:13] You know and like the tagline
[00:34:15] On the poster is sex and crime forever
[00:34:18] That's the tagline
[00:34:20] Yeah I don't know what kind of a
[00:34:22] Tagline that's supposed to be
[00:34:23] And the poster is like them tied together
[00:34:26] In like this very sort of like
[00:34:28] Sort of suggestive SNM way
[00:34:30] Where in the movie the like
[00:34:32] The titular moment where they're bound
[00:34:34] Is very much like a terrifying
[00:34:36] Upsetting thing
[00:34:38] Like it's not like a like
[00:34:39] Ooh we're binding each other
[00:34:40] So let's move on from perception
[00:34:42] And move into the actual movie
[00:34:44] Which is great
[00:34:45] This movie is fucking great
[00:34:46] So good
[00:34:47] This movie is so so strong
[00:34:48] It's like an insane debut film
[00:34:50] Yeah I mean I just
[00:34:52] I tried to watch this
[00:34:54] I had never seen this film before
[00:34:56] I thought I had but I now
[00:34:58] Yeah I thought I had too
[00:34:59] I think I'd only seen certain scenes
[00:35:01] Weirdly I had not
[00:35:03] As much as like yeah I'm sure
[00:35:05] You know obviously it has like a couple of
[00:35:07] Really just one sex scene that's kind of like
[00:35:09] Yeah it's got one yeah
[00:35:10] It's like you know when you watch it
[00:35:12] You're like oh this is like a nicely done
[00:35:14] It's not like a particularly like
[00:35:16] Over the top like
[00:35:19] Ooh
[00:35:20] Oh I agree
[00:35:21] Yes when I was like
[00:35:22] That's the word I'm looking for
[00:35:23] Like cheesy
[00:35:24] Cheesy
[00:35:25] Yeah yeah sex scene
[00:35:26] When I was like 14 or 15
[00:35:28] I was like ooh this scene sounds great
[00:35:30] Like looked it up, found it
[00:35:31] You know probably downloaded off
[00:35:33] Or whatever it was you know
[00:35:35] It wasn't hosted in any sites or whatever
[00:35:37] And then watched it and I was like
[00:35:39] This is disappointing
[00:35:40] I will acknowledge by the way
[00:35:41] It is outrageous and offensive
[00:35:43] That the two of us, two boring straight guys
[00:35:45] Would suck
[00:35:47] Are talking about this fucking landmark movie
[00:35:49] I know I know
[00:35:50] It sucks
[00:35:51] Like an important cornerstone
[00:35:52] I'd rather have a guest on this episode
[00:35:54] But our timing has been terrible
[00:35:56] Terrible
[00:35:57] You know it's just terrible
[00:35:58] Terrible
[00:35:59] Yeah that's another piece of housekeeping
[00:36:01] Here just like table setting
[00:36:03] Because my schedule is a little crazy right now
[00:36:05] This might be a guest light season
[00:36:07] That's fine we're great
[00:36:09] But this episode I'm just particularly upset
[00:36:11] I know we're a bunch of jammokes
[00:36:13] And we shouldn't be fucking talking about this
[00:36:15] Anyway
[00:36:16] But we love it
[00:36:17] Yeah no it's a great movie
[00:36:18] What I was gonna say was
[00:36:19] I watched the scene when I was 15
[00:36:20] I was like eh
[00:36:21] What's the big whoop
[00:36:22] And then I watched the scene in the context of this movie
[00:36:23] And I was like that's a great piece of cinema
[00:36:24] Oh it's awesome
[00:36:25] You know what I'm saying
[00:36:26] Like as masturbatory material
[00:36:27] Oh boy
[00:36:28] Oh boy
[00:36:29] Like most
[00:36:30] Masturbatory
[00:36:31] That's not how you pronounce that made up word
[00:36:33] Like most great art
[00:36:35] If you're looking to masturbate
[00:36:37] You'll be disappointed
[00:36:39] Do you know what I'm saying?
[00:36:40] I do
[00:36:41] The best art should not be masturbated to
[00:36:43] I just wanna collide past this as quickly as we can
[00:36:45] Masturbatory
[00:36:46] No but I know what you mean
[00:36:47] Yeah I mean it's actually a well done scene
[00:36:49] It's a great fucking scene
[00:36:50] It's not a scene meant for a 15 year old
[00:36:52] To download off Kazawa
[00:36:54] Right it's a real piece of cinema
[00:36:56] Wachowski's worked with
[00:36:59] A sex educator called
[00:37:02] Susie Bright
[00:37:03] Who's like a legend in the
[00:37:05] You know like
[00:37:08] Sex education
[00:37:10] She's like a feminist writer
[00:37:12] Like you know and they were like big fans of hers
[00:37:14] And they wanted to like
[00:37:17] Get the scenes right
[00:37:18] I don't know how
[00:37:19] You know I mean I think both Tilly
[00:37:20] And Gershner straight actresses
[00:37:23] I'm pretty sure
[00:37:25] I don't actually have
[00:37:26] I mean to Sam Simon you know
[00:37:28] It looks slight in scale
[00:37:30] I mean we all exist in shades of grey David
[00:37:32] I think the Wachowskis were pretty intent
[00:37:34] On not making a gross
[00:37:36] Porny lesbian thriller
[00:37:38] That was just about boobs
[00:37:40] You know and like they wanted to get the sex scenes right
[00:37:42] There's lots of focus on hands
[00:37:44] Susie Bright has talked about
[00:37:46] Like that this is a wet movie rather than a hard movie
[00:37:48] Like if that makes sense
[00:37:50] Yeah that makes sense it's interesting
[00:37:51] It's not like this like aggressive male
[00:37:52] Sort of like sex thriller
[00:37:54] And it works
[00:37:56] I'll say this it's
[00:37:57] And like you know the bar scene
[00:37:59] Where Gina Gershner goes to the gay bar
[00:38:00] Like that is all Susie Bright's buddies
[00:38:02] Including Susie Bright
[00:38:03] Like all the customers
[00:38:05] You know all the patrons who
[00:38:06] Gina Gershner is trying to hook up with
[00:38:07] Susie Bright is the one
[00:38:08] Cause I looked at her TV
[00:38:09] I believe Susie Bright is the one
[00:38:10] That she hits on
[00:38:11] Yeah yeah
[00:38:12] I will say this
[00:38:14] I do think this is maybe the most
[00:38:16] Erotic film I've ever seen
[00:38:17] But it's like intellectually erotic
[00:38:20] It's a great movie
[00:38:21] Do you know what I'm saying
[00:38:22] Yeah
[00:38:23] Like yeah okay we're watching two pretty ladies kiss
[00:38:25] You know I'm human
[00:38:27] Gets a rise out of me whatever
[00:38:29] You know
[00:38:30] Ben do you have anything to say about this
[00:38:32] Um I mean Gina Gershner
[00:38:34] I just wanted to cut that off
[00:38:35] Gina Gershner I gotta tell you
[00:38:37] As a 90's kid
[00:38:38] I had a major 90's boner
[00:38:40] Telling you right now
[00:38:41] Well because like in show girls
[00:38:43] Which is such a gross episode
[00:38:45] I really want to move past this
[00:38:46] Cause this is a great episode
[00:38:47] This is so incredibly
[00:38:48] Yeah it's crappy
[00:38:49] And I'm not into it
[00:38:50] No
[00:38:51] What I mean to say is
[00:38:52] I found this film almost unbearably erotic
[00:38:55] Because of David
[00:38:57] David
[00:38:58] Yeah yeah yeah
[00:38:59] The way
[00:39:00] The Wachowskis
[00:39:01] Film it
[00:39:02] Edit it
[00:39:03] And sort of create the tension
[00:39:04] And the chemistry between the two of them
[00:39:06] It's not a very graphic movie
[00:39:08] And thus we will move on
[00:39:11] Right
[00:39:12] But I'm saying this film like
[00:39:13] Builds up like a fucking like a hot kettle
[00:39:15] You know it's like steaming up
[00:39:16] Well the thing about this movie is
[00:39:18] I think if you went into it
[00:39:20] You would think like
[00:39:21] Oh like these two are going to get together at the end
[00:39:23] And it's going to be like
[00:39:24] This sort of big like climactic thing
[00:39:26] Where like their romance kind of finally like
[00:39:28] Comes into the forefront of the movie
[00:39:30] It's like minute 20
[00:39:31] Yeah it's basically the movie is like
[00:39:32] Gina Gershwin she's out of jail
[00:39:33] She's playing a
[00:39:35] The character's name is Corky
[00:39:36] Which is really fun
[00:39:37] A work a day jobber called Corky
[00:39:39] An ex-con
[00:39:40] Yeah fresh out she's
[00:39:41] She's working for a mafioso
[00:39:43] Sort of doing maintenance in the building
[00:39:45] Yeah and she's basically cleaning up some apartment
[00:39:47] You know
[00:39:48] Like that's now empty
[00:39:49] Right
[00:39:50] And next door lives
[00:39:52] Sort of like you know
[00:39:54] A capo you know some mafia guy
[00:39:56] Name Caesar
[00:39:57] Name Caesar played by the
[00:39:59] Wonderful Joe Pantaleano
[00:40:01] How do you say that's how you say him
[00:40:02] Pantaleano you know he's the best
[00:40:04] Joey Pants
[00:40:05] Joey Pants the legendary Joey Pants
[00:40:07] Who would be in the matrix later
[00:40:08] And obviously he's in the Sopranos
[00:40:09] He's in the future
[00:40:10] If he's in the Zillion Fuckin'
[00:40:11] Risky Business
[00:40:13] He's also he's great at Midnight Run
[00:40:15] He's great at Midnight Run
[00:40:16] Got the Duke
[00:40:17] Yeah I mean he's
[00:40:18] He's always been a classic like
[00:40:21] Angry little Italian guy
[00:40:23] He's in Memento
[00:40:24] He's wonderful in Memento
[00:40:25] Yes
[00:40:26] Oh he's so good in that
[00:40:27] I forgot about that
[00:40:28] But this is like kind of like a perfect
[00:40:31] Vehicle for him
[00:40:32] Like they just like perfectly
[00:40:34] Harness everything that's incredible about him
[00:40:36] Yeah absolutely
[00:40:37] And they gave him a lot
[00:40:39] I mean he is not a supporting character
[00:40:41] He is almost the third league
[00:40:42] He's third bill and I'd argue
[00:40:43] He's almost an equal lead of the film
[00:40:45] Yeah absolutely
[00:40:46] It's always interesting because it also
[00:40:47] It hands off spotlight
[00:40:48] Right right
[00:40:49] Corky is kind of the main character
[00:40:50] For the first 30 minutes
[00:40:51] And then Jennifer Tilly's character
[00:40:53] Violet is kind of the main character
[00:40:55] In the middle where she's there
[00:40:56] Sort of hatching this plot
[00:40:58] And then Caesar's kind of the big
[00:41:00] Character at the end
[00:41:01] I would agree the third act
[00:41:02] I think is really his spotlight
[00:41:04] It's a pretty tight
[00:41:05] I was going to say it's like
[00:41:07] An hour 40
[00:41:08] It's like an hour 50
[00:41:09] Yeah it's pretty long actually
[00:41:10] But anyway so
[00:41:12] Corky's next door in this empty apartment
[00:41:14] She meets her neighbors
[00:41:15] Who are Caesar, this mob guy
[00:41:16] And Violet is like basically
[00:41:18] Who's basically like a gangsters mall
[00:41:20] Like you know she's like
[00:41:22] Sort of dressed to the nines at all times
[00:41:24] And she's very obviously like
[00:41:26] They've been together for years
[00:41:27] But she sort of serves this like
[00:41:28] Arm candy function
[00:41:29] Yes she's like a gangsters mall
[00:41:32] There's this great scene early
[00:41:34] Well no go ahead
[00:41:35] No what were you going to say
[00:41:36] I was going to set up something further
[00:41:37] Yeah
[00:41:38] Well there's this great scene early
[00:41:39] Well I mean basically Corky
[00:41:40] Who is like obviously like
[00:41:42] An openly gay woman
[00:41:43] Like pretty early on
[00:41:45] Hooks up with Violet
[00:41:47] And then I love this scene
[00:41:48] Where Caesar comes home
[00:41:50] Yeah
[00:41:51] And they're kind of
[00:41:52] You know just in the apartment
[00:41:53] And he reacts to Corky
[00:41:54] Who he thinks is a man
[00:41:55] Because it's like dark and
[00:41:56] White beater short hair from behind
[00:41:58] Right and he's like
[00:41:59] Hey what the fuck
[00:42:00] And it's like you know
[00:42:01] There's just this weird like
[00:42:02] It all it just
[00:42:04] It's all there that like
[00:42:05] Caesar's like you are my property
[00:42:06] And you are not allowed to be
[00:42:07] With any man
[00:42:08] Like clothed, not clothed
[00:42:10] In this apartment no
[00:42:12] Then she turns around
[00:42:13] He sees it's a woman
[00:42:14] And he goes like
[00:42:15] Oh god
[00:42:16] Oh and he's like forget it
[00:42:17] Oh so yeah
[00:42:18] Never mind
[00:42:19] And it's just
[00:42:20] It's like it's a great scene
[00:42:21] To just set up like
[00:42:22] Yep this is an antiquated person
[00:42:23] Yeah
[00:42:24] Like the idea that
[00:42:25] Violet would be gay
[00:42:26] Or anything like that
[00:42:27] Yeah
[00:42:28] Never even enter his brain
[00:42:29] Yeah
[00:42:30] But it's just like
[00:42:31] If you are in here with
[00:42:32] Another man
[00:42:33] Like you are dead meat
[00:42:34] Even if you're
[00:42:35] We've been together for years
[00:42:36] Like it doesn't matter
[00:42:37] There's a lot of really sharp
[00:42:38] Economical storytelling
[00:42:39] In this movie
[00:42:40] And it's also like
[00:42:41] It's one of these thrillers
[00:42:42] It's just like
[00:42:43] Tight as a drum
[00:42:44] Like it runs
[00:42:45] Like a clock
[00:42:46] You know
[00:42:47] And
[00:42:48] Especially since it's really
[00:42:49] There's one scene where
[00:42:50] Korky goes into this gay bar
[00:42:51] As we said
[00:42:52] Yeah
[00:42:53] That I think is really
[00:42:54] Just there for kind of color
[00:42:55] And like just
[00:42:56] A little bit of characterization
[00:42:57] Well that's also the first
[00:42:58] Time we find out
[00:42:59] No
[00:43:00] That's not the first time
[00:43:01] We find out
[00:43:02] But there's that great scene
[00:43:03] Where she goes in
[00:43:04] She goes up to the woman
[00:43:05] She starts hitting on her
[00:43:06] The other woman comes up
[00:43:07] Oh we find out she's an ex con
[00:43:08] Exactly
[00:43:09] That's where you find out there
[00:43:10] Right
[00:43:11] So that is
[00:43:12] She's hitting on one woman
[00:43:13] Another woman comes over and goes like
[00:43:14] Oh Korky
[00:43:15] Huh
[00:43:16] I didn't know you were out so soon
[00:43:17] And then flashes her badge
[00:43:18] And Korky's immediately like
[00:43:19] Okay
[00:43:20] But if you get tired of
[00:43:21] Kagnie and Lacy come find me
[00:43:22] You know
[00:43:23] Yes
[00:43:24] So you get a sense of her character
[00:43:25] Her attitude
[00:43:26] Her sexuality
[00:43:27] The way she interacts
[00:43:28] With other people
[00:43:29] You know
[00:43:30] This is a woman who doesn't
[00:43:31] Fuck around
[00:43:32] And she's an ex con
[00:43:33] Right
[00:43:34] And she
[00:43:35] And she's not flustered
[00:43:36] She just takes her
[00:43:37] And she comes to the bar
[00:43:38] And she's like
[00:43:39] I'm looking to get laid
[00:43:40] And
[00:43:41] But what I was going to say
[00:43:42] Is apart from that scene
[00:43:43] Mostly this takes place
[00:43:44] In these two apartments
[00:43:45] Correct
[00:43:46] In this empty apartment Korky's
[00:43:47] Working on
[00:43:48] Yeah
[00:43:49] And this kind of lavish mobster
[00:43:50] Apartment that's next door
[00:43:51] Yeah
[00:43:52] Other than that
[00:43:53] The rules are thin
[00:43:54] Other than that
[00:43:55] As we keep
[00:43:56] Well that's the thing
[00:43:57] I want to set up
[00:43:58] That's a crucial thing
[00:43:59] Which I love in this movie
[00:44:00] Now this movie is shot by
[00:44:01] Bill Pope
[00:44:02] The great Bill Pope
[00:44:03] Who is a great cinematographer
[00:44:04] Who's like the master
[00:44:05] Of like in-camera effects
[00:44:06] He likes shot
[00:44:07] The Matrix he shot
[00:44:08] Spider-Man
[00:44:09] Spider-Man 2 I think
[00:44:10] I think he shot also
[00:44:11] The Ramy ones
[00:44:12] Cause he's a Ramy guy
[00:44:13] He did Army of Darkness
[00:44:14] He did Dark Man
[00:44:15] He shot Scott Pilgrim
[00:44:16] Versus the world
[00:44:17] He's the fucking best
[00:44:18] And he did
[00:44:19] He's one of the most underrated
[00:44:20] Cinematographers alive
[00:44:21] He's never been nominated
[00:44:22] For an Oscar
[00:44:23] Which drives me crazy
[00:44:24] He shot Freaks and Geeks
[00:44:25] Yeah
[00:44:26] I believe he shot the pilot
[00:44:27] So he like set the look for it
[00:44:28] Right
[00:44:29] The other thing he shot
[00:44:30] I think one of the most
[00:44:31] Underrated cinematography jobs
[00:44:32] Of the last 40 years
[00:44:33] He shot Team America
[00:44:34] Oh yeah
[00:44:35] Right
[00:44:36] Another tough one
[00:44:37] Which is like making
[00:44:38] He like made it genuinely look
[00:44:40] Like a Michael Bay film
[00:44:42] Yeah
[00:44:43] No I agree with you
[00:44:44] The look is perfect
[00:44:45] Yeah it's crazy
[00:44:46] But uh and uh
[00:44:48] He's got all these
[00:44:49] Sort of camera passes
[00:44:50] I mean like you say it's obvious
[00:44:51] Soundstage where he'll like
[00:44:52] Sort of jump from one apartment
[00:44:53] To the other
[00:44:54] And these seamless moves
[00:44:55] Like over the wall
[00:44:56] Basically
[00:44:57] Over the wall shot
[00:44:58] Just to give you an idea
[00:44:59] Like how tenuous the wall is
[00:45:00] And like how obvious the
[00:45:01] You know
[00:45:02] You can hear one through the other
[00:45:04] That's another thing
[00:45:05] I guess when I like keep on
[00:45:06] Harping about how erotic
[00:45:07] The movie is
[00:45:08] Half of it is that
[00:45:09] No but half of it is
[00:45:10] Rolling my eyes
[00:45:11] I have such a heart on it
[00:45:12] The fucking like
[00:45:13] Me's on set in this film
[00:45:14] Do you know what I'm saying
[00:45:15] Like the fucking craft in this film
[00:45:17] Like we're saying
[00:45:18] It's the Wachowski's kind of
[00:45:19] Showing off
[00:45:20] Yeah
[00:45:21] Consciously or not
[00:45:22] And saying like
[00:45:23] Look what we did with a little money
[00:45:24] Yeah
[00:45:25] Imagine what we could do
[00:45:26] With a lot of money
[00:45:27] Yeah
[00:45:28] It's these two parallel rooms
[00:45:29] The wall's really thin
[00:45:30] They set that up early
[00:45:31] Which feels like a very
[00:45:32] Hitchcock-y device
[00:45:33] This whole movie feels
[00:45:34] Very Hitchcock-y to me
[00:45:35] And that it's like
[00:45:36] You know like
[00:45:37] The Noirie, Billy Wildermovie's
[00:45:38] Like Double-Ademinity
[00:45:39] I think are a big influence
[00:45:40] But there's that element of like
[00:45:42] Where it's like everyone's kind of
[00:45:43] A gangster
[00:45:44] You know and like
[00:45:45] So that kind of forgives
[00:45:46] Any obvious
[00:45:47] Because like Jennifer Tilley
[00:45:48] Violet just is like
[00:45:49] I want to have sex with you
[00:45:50] And Gina Gershwin's like
[00:45:51] Okay
[00:45:52] Even though it's like
[00:45:53] Dude
[00:45:54] Maybe a bad call
[00:45:55] Mobster's girlfriend
[00:45:56] Next door
[00:45:57] Like maybe you don't
[00:45:58] Want to do that
[00:45:59] But you're just like
[00:46:00] Well this is what's happening
[00:46:01] Because this is about
[00:46:02] Kind of edgy people
[00:46:03] But I also think that
[00:46:04] Scene at the gate bar
[00:46:05] Maybe you flirt with danger
[00:46:06] Literally
[00:46:07] Yes
[00:46:08] Fair enough
[00:46:09] That's true
[00:46:10] You know
[00:46:11] I think that's why that scene's important
[00:46:12] I also I think that
[00:46:13] God this is so good
[00:46:15] The fucking
[00:46:16] The thin wall thing
[00:46:17] It like it sets up like a language
[00:46:19] Going forward in the film
[00:46:20] So anytime any conversation
[00:46:21] Is happening on one side of the wall
[00:46:23] There's this immediate tension
[00:46:24] Of like
[00:46:25] Kind of be heard on the other side
[00:46:27] They use
[00:46:29] That like
[00:46:31] That fear
[00:46:32] That like unknown
[00:46:33] Of like what's happening
[00:46:34] On the other side of the wall
[00:46:35] A lot in the film
[00:46:36] You know
[00:46:37] And sometimes they call it out
[00:46:38] And they use it
[00:46:39] Sometimes it's the thing
[00:46:40] In the back of your mind
[00:46:41] There are these two phones
[00:46:42] That they used to communicate
[00:46:43] With each other
[00:46:44] That are like
[00:46:45] Right on the opposite
[00:46:46] Sides of the wall
[00:46:47] There's a great fucking scene
[00:46:48] Where they track from
[00:46:49] The phone cord on one side
[00:46:50] Of the wall through the wall
[00:46:51] To the
[00:46:52] Oh god
[00:46:53] Good movie
[00:46:54] Okay
[00:46:55] So
[00:46:56] But I was just about Bill Pope
[00:46:57] Just to finish
[00:46:58] This is a little anecdote
[00:46:59] They had another DP
[00:47:00] I don't know who
[00:47:01] Interesting
[00:47:02] To the camera moves he want
[00:47:03] With this budget
[00:47:04] Yeah
[00:47:05] And so he quit
[00:47:06] And Bill Pope was like
[00:47:07] Nah I can do it
[00:47:08] You know
[00:47:09] And like you know
[00:47:10] Like Bill Pope worked within a very
[00:47:11] Small budget to achieve
[00:47:12] Some fairly ambitious stuff
[00:47:13] But I think that's like
[00:47:14] The Ramey school
[00:47:15] You know like
[00:47:16] Ramey is like a guy
[00:47:17] Who does like crazy camera moves
[00:47:18] Like he has a very expressive camera
[00:47:20] And until Spider-Man
[00:47:21] He was doing it on a very limited budget
[00:47:23] Yeah
[00:47:24] And mind you like
[00:47:25] Spider-Man
[00:47:26] Well in The Matrix
[00:47:27] The Matrix is 99
[00:47:28] Yes yes
[00:47:29] Right I forgot
[00:47:30] Yes
[00:47:31] And then there was a movie
[00:47:32] That like he had a big budget
[00:47:33] And what did he do
[00:47:34] He like had this crazy
[00:47:35] Inventive like innovative idea
[00:47:38] Which was like
[00:47:39] What if we get a helicopter
[00:47:40] And a wire
[00:47:41] And we attach the camera to the
[00:47:43] Bottom of the wire on the helicopter
[00:47:45] Right and that will get that
[00:47:46] Sort of swinging
[00:47:47] And film the plates from that
[00:47:48] And then CGI Spider-Man
[00:47:49] Into it which is like
[00:47:50] Still the best depiction
[00:47:51] Of Spider-Man in motion
[00:47:52] In any of the films
[00:47:53] It's true
[00:47:54] Like just those sequences
[00:47:55] Are so perfectly realized
[00:47:57] Anyhow
[00:47:59] Back to bound
[00:48:00] Bound's great movie
[00:48:02] And so the plot is
[00:48:05] Let me just
[00:48:06] I'll just recap the plot real quick
[00:48:07] Sure
[00:48:08] So you've got these two women
[00:48:09] And they meet
[00:48:10] And they hook up real fast
[00:48:12] And maybe they're not in love
[00:48:14] With each other exactly
[00:48:15] Like it's not like they're just professing
[00:48:16] Like oh you're the greatest woman
[00:48:17] Remember real energy there
[00:48:18] But there's a strong connection
[00:48:19] Yeah
[00:48:20] That is like very apparent
[00:48:22] And very well played by both Tilly
[00:48:24] And Gershaw
[00:48:25] Gina Gershaw in fact
[00:48:26] Very early on in the film
[00:48:27] She's fucking good in this movie
[00:48:28] Yes
[00:48:29] And the film says like
[00:48:30] We're very different people
[00:48:31] Right
[00:48:32] You know
[00:48:33] Like you're
[00:48:34] She sort of implies that Jennifer Tilly
[00:48:35] Is like looking for an experience
[00:48:36] Well and there's also this judgment
[00:48:37] That I love where
[00:48:39] Gina Gershaw
[00:48:40] Like she can hear Jennifer Tilly
[00:48:41] Having sex through the walls
[00:48:42] With multiple partners
[00:48:43] I believe
[00:48:44] Yes
[00:48:45] I think there's the implication
[00:48:46] Different men of this sort of crime family
[00:48:47] And she's like
[00:48:48] Kind of like
[00:48:49] You know
[00:48:50] What am I going to do
[00:48:51] And Jennifer Tilly
[00:48:52] Pretty like dresses her down
[00:48:53] And sort of like
[00:48:54] You know
[00:48:55] I'm not judging you
[00:48:56] You don't judge me
[00:48:57] That's my job
[00:48:58] And it's a situation I have
[00:48:59] But it's work
[00:49:00] We both have done in our lives
[00:49:02] What we need to do is survive
[00:49:03] Like you ended up in jail
[00:49:04] And this is my jail
[00:49:05] It's like being stuck in this apartment
[00:49:07] With these shitty men
[00:49:08] You know
[00:49:09] Right
[00:49:10] But very
[00:49:11] That's the thing
[00:49:12] This beautiful thing in the film
[00:49:13] Is very early on
[00:49:14] Gershaw is like attracted to her
[00:49:15] But it's like
[00:49:16] We're fundamentally different people
[00:49:17] And the movie is them
[00:49:18] Starting to realize
[00:49:19] How similar they are
[00:49:20] Which is that lion
[00:49:21] I mangled at the beginning of the episode
[00:49:23] Was like this idea of them becoming
[00:49:25] Like one
[00:49:27] You know
[00:49:28] Yeah, bound
[00:49:29] Yeah, bound together
[00:49:32] But anyway
[00:49:33] So Tilly works with this mobster
[00:49:35] Lives with this mobster
[00:49:36] Right
[00:49:37] And
[00:49:39] She
[00:49:40] You know
[00:49:41] He has a bag of money
[00:49:43] Yeah
[00:49:44] He has a bag of money
[00:49:45] That's covered in blood
[00:49:46] All movies should just have a bag of money
[00:49:47] Bag of money
[00:49:48] It's two million bucks in a paper bag
[00:49:50] Yeah
[00:49:51] It's covered in blood
[00:49:52] Because a sort of
[00:49:53] More wacko mobster
[00:49:55] Who's a little like, you know
[00:49:56] Off the rails
[00:49:57] Played by Christopher
[00:49:58] Young Christopher Maloney
[00:49:59] The great Chris Maloney
[00:50:00] One of his earliest roles
[00:50:01] One of our finest actors
[00:50:02] He shot someone in vicinity
[00:50:04] To this bag of money
[00:50:05] And so the bag of money is covered in blood
[00:50:06] So Corky, I mean not Corky
[00:50:08] Caesar
[00:50:09] The mobster has to
[00:50:10] Literally launder the money
[00:50:11] And make it clean again
[00:50:12] But in like a perfect encapsulation
[00:50:14] Of how this film is
[00:50:16] No detail is unimportant
[00:50:18] Like everything serves a larger purpose
[00:50:21] That becomes this point of animosity
[00:50:24] Between the two of them
[00:50:26] Where it's like, you made me
[00:50:28] Have to clean this money
[00:50:29] Right
[00:50:30] Because you got overzealous
[00:50:31] And attacking this guy
[00:50:32] You shot a guy, yeah right
[00:50:33] Right
[00:50:34] And then it's like a Joey Pants
[00:50:35] Punches Maloney to get
[00:50:37] Like as punishment
[00:50:39] For the thing
[00:50:40] Yes
[00:50:41] So there's this tension
[00:50:42] Between the two of them
[00:50:43] He's pissed off already
[00:50:44] Right
[00:50:45] So like Tilly knows about the money
[00:50:46] And Tilly notices this
[00:50:47] Sees the tension
[00:50:48] And is like
[00:50:49] There's room to play here
[00:50:50] And Glistegershin says
[00:50:51] We can exploit this
[00:50:52] We can basically
[00:50:53] Take the money
[00:50:54] Yeah
[00:50:55] And I can imply to Caesar
[00:50:56] That Chris Maloney took the money
[00:50:58] Right
[00:50:59] And you know
[00:51:00] While we were out
[00:51:01] And then that will be enough
[00:51:03] You know he'll realize
[00:51:04] That he's in trouble
[00:51:05] And he'll get out of town
[00:51:06] Chris Maloney's dad is like
[00:51:08] The chief
[00:51:09] The Godfather
[00:51:10] Right
[00:51:11] And the idea is
[00:51:12] That if the money's missing
[00:51:13] He'll know Maloney took it
[00:51:15] Or if he thinks Maloney
[00:51:16] Pants will know that Maloney took it
[00:51:18] But Pants will also know
[00:51:20] That they'll think that he
[00:51:21] Can't win
[00:51:22] Right
[00:51:23] So he's like
[00:51:24] All he can do is go on the run
[00:51:25] And then they
[00:51:26] That's their plan
[00:51:27] Run away with the money
[00:51:28] And become happy
[00:51:29] Happy people together
[00:51:30] Living their own free life
[00:51:31] For the first time
[00:51:32] Not having to make these concessions
[00:51:33] To play the game
[00:51:34] So it's a fairly simple plan
[00:51:35] The plan is essentially
[00:51:36] We steal the money
[00:51:37] Yeah
[00:51:38] And then we leave together
[00:51:39] When you're watching the movie
[00:51:40] You're like
[00:51:41] Well this is riddled
[00:51:42] With problems
[00:51:43] This plan
[00:51:44] It's an overly simple plan
[00:51:45] But nonetheless
[00:51:46] What works about the movie
[00:51:47] Is there's not like
[00:51:48] This is not some Ocean's 11 shit
[00:51:50] No
[00:51:51] Like if you're looking for money
[00:51:52] Yeah
[00:51:53] Violet's gonna make Joey Pants
[00:51:54] Think that the
[00:51:55] Another guy stole it
[00:51:56] Yeah
[00:51:57] And they're hoping
[00:51:58] That he's gonna take the hint
[00:51:59] And just get out of dodge
[00:52:00] And then they can
[00:52:01] Escape Scott Free with the assumption
[00:52:03] That the money just
[00:52:04] You know
[00:52:05] Fanish into thin air
[00:52:06] Right
[00:52:07] They'll spend their time
[00:52:08] Looking for pants
[00:52:09] Rather than looking for them
[00:52:10] Joey Pants thinks Maloney
[00:52:11] Took it
[00:52:12] The mobsters will think
[00:52:13] Joey Pants took it
[00:52:14] Like
[00:52:15] And it's sort of like
[00:52:16] No one will look to that
[00:52:17] It's when you go to one friend
[00:52:18] You know
[00:52:19] One friend's house
[00:52:20] Teenage switcheroo
[00:52:21] And the plan is so simple
[00:52:22] That the crux of it
[00:52:23] Like the fulcrum of their plan
[00:52:25] Revolves around a bottle of whiskey
[00:52:27] Yes
[00:52:28] Around Tilly dropping a bottle of whiskey
[00:52:29] So they have to go out and get some
[00:52:30] What if I break a bottle of whiskey
[00:52:31] And go out and get some
[00:52:32] What if I knew one
[00:52:33] And then pretend that I saw
[00:52:34] The guy outside
[00:52:35] Which will freak pants out
[00:52:36] And much like
[00:52:37] So much of this movie
[00:52:38] Which is like
[00:52:39] Bound up in identity
[00:52:41] Like
[00:52:42] Tilly, you know
[00:52:43] Violet is playing
[00:52:44] On this like
[00:52:45] Thing of like
[00:52:46] She knows that
[00:52:47] Caesar's gonna need
[00:52:48] A particular bottle of whiskey
[00:52:49] To impress this particular mobster
[00:52:51] Who's gonna come over
[00:52:52] And collect this money
[00:52:53] That's like
[00:52:54] Freshly laundered
[00:52:55] Everything needs to be right
[00:52:56] Everything needs to be perfect
[00:52:57] The money needs to be like
[00:52:58] Ironed, there's this great image
[00:52:59] Where they're hanging every
[00:53:00] Hundred dollar bill
[00:53:01] Over these like
[00:53:02] Clothes lines all over the apartment
[00:53:03] So good
[00:53:05] Good movie
[00:53:06] And like
[00:53:07] And as long as Tilly maintains
[00:53:09] This image of like
[00:53:10] Oh I'm just like
[00:53:11] Your ditzy girlfriend
[00:53:12] Who dropped a bottle of whiskey
[00:53:13] And like
[00:53:14] Uh oh, you know
[00:53:15] Then like
[00:53:16] They can carry this off
[00:53:17] So good
[00:53:18] Uh agreed
[00:53:19] And then of course it falls apart
[00:53:20] Everything goes
[00:53:21] To shit
[00:53:22] But it also goes to shit
[00:53:23] Pretty early on
[00:53:24] That's what's fun
[00:53:25] The whole thing happens
[00:53:26] In the middle of the movie
[00:53:27] Right, so like
[00:53:28] At like minute 40
[00:53:29] There are like
[00:53:30] Plans in place
[00:53:31] Here we go
[00:53:32] And by like minute 50
[00:53:33] Everything's fucked up
[00:53:34] And so the next hour
[00:53:35] Of the movie is like
[00:53:36] How do they get out of this
[00:53:37] As this just becomes worse
[00:53:38] And worse and worse
[00:53:39] And their plan was also
[00:53:40] Very much based around
[00:53:42] Their like
[00:53:44] Their sense of like
[00:53:46] Human intuition
[00:53:47] Like this is how we believe
[00:53:49] People are going to behave
[00:53:50] Right
[00:53:51] And they misjudge everyone
[00:53:52] You know, so it's like
[00:53:53] I guarantee you
[00:53:54] He's gonna do this
[00:53:55] She'll do this
[00:53:56] He'll do this
[00:53:57] Yeah, it's a lot of right
[00:53:58] Guessing at human motivations
[00:54:00] Right
[00:54:01] What happens
[00:54:02] Everything goes wrong
[00:54:03] Everything gets
[00:54:04] Maloney shows up
[00:54:05] With his mom
[00:54:06] With his godfather of a dad
[00:54:07] Right
[00:54:08] And
[00:54:09] Joey pants kinda snaps
[00:54:11] Thinking that he's
[00:54:12] Stolen the money
[00:54:13] Right
[00:54:14] Which they didn't think
[00:54:15] They would do in front of the dad
[00:54:16] They thought that he would just
[00:54:17] Take the bullet or run
[00:54:19] He calls them on it
[00:54:20] Yeah
[00:54:21] And in fit of rage
[00:54:23] He kills Maloney
[00:54:24] He shoots him dead
[00:54:25] And his father
[00:54:26] And then he shoots his dad dead
[00:54:27] Who's the Elchefe
[00:54:29] Yeah
[00:54:30] Who's played by
[00:54:31] I can't remember
[00:54:33] Elchefe
[00:54:34] Peter Spellos
[00:54:35] Yes, and then also
[00:54:36] A henchman
[00:54:37] He kills three big
[00:54:38] Important people
[00:54:39] And that like
[00:54:40] Sends the whole thing
[00:54:41] Off the rails
[00:54:42] Cause now he's like
[00:54:43] Okay
[00:54:44] How do I do this
[00:54:45] Like how do
[00:54:46] He's basically like
[00:54:47] How do I survive this
[00:54:48] Is there a way for me
[00:54:49] To get this money back somehow
[00:54:51] And at this point the movie
[00:54:52] Almost takes place in real time
[00:54:54] Like I'd say the next 45 minutes
[00:54:55] Maybe it'll take place in an hour
[00:54:56] And the crazy thing is
[00:54:57] It's just
[00:54:58] Joey pants and Tilly
[00:55:00] Gina Gershyn
[00:55:01] We cup to her
[00:55:02] Quietly
[00:55:03] On the other side of the wall
[00:55:04] On the other side of the wall
[00:55:05] She hides the money
[00:55:06] In a can of paint
[00:55:07] Which is brilliant
[00:55:08] Two cans of paint
[00:55:09] In plastic bags
[00:55:10] And she doesn't do anything
[00:55:11] She's always connected to the action
[00:55:13] She's not actually involved
[00:55:15] Yeah
[00:55:16] But there's this passing of the baton
[00:55:18] Like Gershyn's the main character
[00:55:20] The beginning of the film
[00:55:21] That when the plan starts to come into place
[00:55:22] Tilly it's like
[00:55:23] She's the one who's like
[00:55:24] We should do this
[00:55:25] And it becomes her film
[00:55:26] And then when things go off
[00:55:27] The rails
[00:55:28] It becomes pants' film
[00:55:29] Because it becomes this horror movie
[00:55:31] Of these two women being like
[00:55:32] Is there any way
[00:55:33] We can make this right again
[00:55:35] Right
[00:55:36] You know
[00:55:37] And also now because he's snapped
[00:55:38] It's like
[00:55:39] He could kill us
[00:55:40] Like all bets are off
[00:55:41] You know
[00:55:43] And he's also
[00:55:44] Becoming increasingly desperate
[00:55:46] And manic
[00:55:47] Right
[00:55:48] Which is like
[00:55:49] A great mode for Joey Pants to be in
[00:55:50] I mean that's a treat
[00:55:51] For us to watch
[00:55:52] Yeah
[00:55:53] I'll say this
[00:55:55] You see a lot of
[00:55:56] Joey Pants' body in this movie
[00:55:58] Yeah
[00:55:59] There's a whole scene
[00:56:00] Where he's in a towel
[00:56:01] Yeah but he's like
[00:56:02] Holding the towel just
[00:56:03] In front of his dick
[00:56:04] It's like you see
[00:56:05] All other parts
[00:56:06] But then there's a subsequent scene
[00:56:07] Where he
[00:56:08] Like a ten minute
[00:56:09] Like tension
[00:56:10] It's not longer
[00:56:11] He's showing
[00:56:12] Like having a showdown with another mobster
[00:56:13] Yeah
[00:56:14] Where he's just wrapped in a towel
[00:56:15] The whole time
[00:56:16] But there is one scene where he is holding
[00:56:17] A towel in a way
[00:56:18] I've never seen someone hold a towel
[00:56:19] Before in my life
[00:56:20] Which is just like
[00:56:21] Lightly in front of his wiener
[00:56:24] I've done that
[00:56:25] You see like the sides of his hips
[00:56:27] Like you see like everything else
[00:56:28] He's just like draping it
[00:56:29] Yeah
[00:56:30] I love Joey Pants
[00:56:31] Great actor
[00:56:33] Did you know that he
[00:56:35] Wrote
[00:56:36] He founded a nonprofit organization
[00:56:37] Called
[00:56:38] No kidding me too
[00:56:39] Did you know that?
[00:56:40] About
[00:56:41] People in the entertainment industry
[00:56:43] Who have suffered from clinical depression
[00:56:46] And the idea is like when you say
[00:56:48] Like well actually
[00:56:49] I've suffered from depression in my life
[00:56:51] And like when you say that to someone
[00:56:52] The other person goes
[00:56:53] No kidding me too
[00:56:55] Anyway I love Joey Pants
[00:56:56] I do too
[00:56:58] I think it was my buddy
[00:56:59] Jesse Knight
[00:57:00] Who is a film writer
[00:57:01] Jesse Ryan Knight
[00:57:02] Oh sorry
[00:57:03] He's kicking you
[00:57:04] He's fine
[00:57:05] God
[00:57:06] Don't worry about it
[00:57:07] I'm very you know
[00:57:08] Fidgety
[00:57:09] I'm very lucky today
[00:57:10] I think I hope I'm not misattributing this
[00:57:12] The wrong person
[00:57:13] I believe my buddy Jesse Ryan Knight
[00:57:14] Who's a great guy
[00:57:15] And a great film writer
[00:57:16] A great film writer
[00:57:17] I mean it sounds like
[00:57:18] What about him?
[00:57:19] He tweeted I can't believe
[00:57:20] It's been 10 years
[00:57:22] Since Joey Pants
[00:57:23] Wasn't even nominated for Bound
[00:57:26] He must have tweeted this
[00:57:27] 10 years ago
[00:57:28] You mean 20 years
[00:57:29] Oh yeah that's what I mean
[00:57:30] I don't know
[00:57:32] He should have been nominated
[00:57:33] Because he's great
[00:57:34] It's a great performance
[00:57:35] And it's like a full meal
[00:57:36] Like it's like a guy
[00:57:37] Getting a chance to really dig in
[00:57:39] In a way I don't think he'd gotten
[00:57:40] The chance before
[00:57:41] I mean but it's also a great
[00:57:43] A great like
[00:57:46] Portrait of
[00:57:48] Like at the beginning of the movie
[00:57:49] He's a big shot
[00:57:50] He's well dressed
[00:57:51] He's got this nice apartment
[00:57:52] He's got this nice girl
[00:57:54] And like
[00:57:55] Of like his masculinity
[00:57:56] His like
[00:57:57] His whole image
[00:57:58] Just being eaten away
[00:57:59] From the inside
[00:58:00] By like forces
[00:58:01] He doesn't even understand
[00:58:02] It's like fragile masculinity
[00:58:04] At its
[00:58:05] Most fragile
[00:58:06] His biggest flaw in this movie
[00:58:08] Is that he cannot conceive of the idea
[00:58:10] That Jennifer Tilly at Violet
[00:58:12] Would be working with Corky
[00:58:13] Right
[00:58:14] You know that they would have a connection
[00:58:15] Yeah
[00:58:16] That they would be in love
[00:58:17] Or anything like that
[00:58:18] I mean he eventually figures it out
[00:58:19] But it takes him
[00:58:21] I don't know an hour and 25 minutes
[00:58:23] Like it takes him most of the movie
[00:58:24] To figure it out
[00:58:25] Yeah because he
[00:58:26] He's so arrogant
[00:58:27] That he can't fathom the idea
[00:58:29] That Jennifer Tilly would want
[00:58:30] Anything other than to be
[00:58:31] With him forever
[00:58:33] Yes you know
[00:58:34] Even though like
[00:58:35] What the fuck does he offer her
[00:58:36] Like Jesus
[00:58:37] Right
[00:58:38] Well there's that great line
[00:58:39] Where he says like
[00:58:40] What does she offer you
[00:58:41] She gives me everything
[00:58:43] I'm gonna fucking misquote it
[00:58:45] But there's a part where it's like
[00:58:46] What does she give you that I can't
[00:58:48] And Jennifer Tilly I think says everything
[00:58:50] It's like something like that
[00:58:54] It's great
[00:58:55] It's a great movie
[00:58:56] I mean like let's not spoil the ending
[00:58:58] In detail
[00:58:59] I mean maybe we should
[00:59:00] I mean I don't know
[00:59:01] It's like
[00:59:03] There's this whole subsequent
[00:59:05] As we said like third act where
[00:59:07] Joey Pence is trying to hold it all together
[00:59:09] He's trying to act like the monsters
[00:59:10] Never showed at his apartment
[00:59:11] When they're actually like
[00:59:13] In the bathroom
[00:59:14] The bodies are like
[00:59:15] Being kept in the bathroom under the sink
[00:59:17] Yeah
[00:59:18] Like cops show up and they kind of get around the cops
[00:59:20] Because the cops heard like gunfire
[00:59:22] That's a great scene
[00:59:23] This is like such a Hitchcock-y sequence where they like
[00:59:25] So Hitchcock-y
[00:59:26] The cops come in
[00:59:27] Oh and Joey Pence pretends that he's hard of hearing
[00:59:30] And he has like a gangster movie on the TV
[00:59:32] And that's what the gunshots were
[00:59:34] It's great
[00:59:35] He's got a gun tucked into the back of his pants
[00:59:37] The whole time
[00:59:38] So you don't want him to turn around the whole time
[00:59:40] It's so weird though that Wachowski's never made another movie
[00:59:42] Like this
[00:59:43] That he's like so like hinges on those little
[00:59:45] Tense little like you know set ups
[00:59:47] It's so small and focused
[00:59:48] And like it's one of these movies where you have to
[00:59:50] Lean in and like pay attention to every detail
[00:59:52] Because it's like everything shifts
[00:59:54] The entire standing of the characters
[00:59:57] You know
[00:59:58] The sound
[00:59:59] God the fucking sound in this movie is unbelievable
[01:00:02] But they come in and Joey Pence is like
[01:00:04] You want a beer or something?
[01:00:06] And they're like no but I could use the bathroom
[01:00:08] Oh no
[01:00:09] And Pence is like
[01:00:10] Oh okay
[01:00:11] That's where the body is
[01:00:12] But he you know
[01:00:13] He knows he can't break character
[01:00:15] Right
[01:00:16] Guys great movie
[01:00:17] Dead bodies in the bathtub
[01:00:19] So the guy goes in the bathroom
[01:00:20] And you see blood dripping from the curtain
[01:00:22] And it's like
[01:00:23] Is he gonna notice
[01:00:24] And then the cops looking around
[01:00:25] And he's like
[01:00:26] Real nice apartment you got here
[01:00:27] And Joey Pence has just like moved all the furniture
[01:00:29] To cover up all the shit
[01:00:31] And you're like is he gonna notice
[01:00:32] And he's like nice place nice place
[01:00:34] He steps on a rug
[01:00:35] And the rug goes like
[01:00:36] Yeah
[01:00:37] And he put the rug over like this immense pool of blood
[01:00:40] So you see blood seeping out of the rug
[01:00:42] And getting on the guy's shoe
[01:00:44] And you're like is he gonna notice
[01:00:45] Is he gonna notice
[01:00:46] And so in these great movies where you're like
[01:00:48] In a dumber movie
[01:00:49] That would be like a hinge
[01:00:50] And that would become a plot point
[01:00:51] And he has to shoot the cops
[01:00:52] But this movie is like so much about like
[01:00:55] Things going wrong
[01:00:57] That you can't predict that also like
[01:00:59] Things go right
[01:01:00] The cops never notice that he's got like blood on his shoe
[01:01:02] Right and then these mobsters show up
[01:01:04] You know these like other mobsters
[01:01:06] The sort of major mob characters played by Joe
[01:01:09] John Ryan
[01:01:10] You know they show up being like
[01:01:13] Well where's the boss
[01:01:14] Like they never got the money
[01:01:15] You know
[01:01:16] And they have that dialogue where it's like
[01:01:18] Hey moved all the furniture around
[01:01:19] And like Joey Pence is like
[01:01:21] Yeah you know Jennifer Till you know Violet
[01:01:23] Violet want to impress everybody
[01:01:24] Yeah and they're like
[01:01:25] Ladies am I right
[01:01:26] You know like again they cannot conceive of the idea
[01:01:29] That the women around them would have any
[01:01:31] Independent sort of thought or action
[01:01:33] Are smarter than that
[01:01:34] Yeah whatever it be
[01:01:35] It's just like oh yeah cause she moved the furniture around
[01:01:37] Cause she's a dumb broad
[01:01:38] Hey you know it's the best
[01:01:40] It's very much a fragile masculinity movie
[01:01:43] And I also think
[01:01:45] Okay so here's something
[01:01:47] Once again as like a shitty stupid piece of garbage
[01:01:51] So you're gonna talk about eroticism again
[01:01:53] No but I mean I'm gonna try to talk about this in the correct way
[01:01:56] Right
[01:01:57] Cause I think this is an important thing
[01:01:58] I'm probably gonna fuck this up right
[01:02:01] You know there's a lot of
[01:02:04] I've read a lot of really good pieces
[01:02:06] About like the male gaze and cinema
[01:02:08] You know
[01:02:09] And how like most male directors
[01:02:11] If they sexualize a woman
[01:02:12] It's sort of very objectifying
[01:02:15] You know
[01:02:16] And this movie watching it
[01:02:17] Maybe it's through the prism of knowing everything we know now
[01:02:20] It is
[01:02:21] But I look at it
[01:02:22] It's very obsessed with their bodies
[01:02:23] Yeah I guess so
[01:02:24] And not in a titillating way
[01:02:25] You know I mean there's not very much nudity
[01:02:27] It's this one shot essentially
[01:02:29] Well the sex scene that I mean I think that everyone talks about
[01:02:32] It's this very cool like yeah camera move
[01:02:35] That sort of goes like down one side of the bed
[01:02:38] And loops around it like it's really well done
[01:02:41] Yes it's not the classic like pan down
[01:02:44] Like a person's naked body
[01:02:46] Right
[01:02:47] When I say the movies are obsessed with their bodies
[01:02:48] Your classic like red shoe diaries
[01:02:49] Yeah right
[01:02:50] When I say the movies are obsessed with their bodies
[01:02:51] I don't mean that like
[01:02:52] The movies are obsessed with their tits
[01:02:53] I mean like the movies are obsessed with their like
[01:02:56] Existence
[01:02:57] You know like them being human females
[01:03:00] And there's even like the first time they kiss
[01:03:03] Maybe my favorite shot in the entire film
[01:03:05] Is like their two lips essentially in shadow
[01:03:08] Like you just pretty much see their two lips
[01:03:10] And super close up
[01:03:11] Getting closer and closer to each other talking
[01:03:14] And I feel like the film at points like fragments
[01:03:16] Like oh god look at their hands
[01:03:17] Look at their feet
[01:03:18] Yeah there's a lot of focus on the hands
[01:03:21] Right
[01:03:22] But once again I'm speaking as a shitty white guy
[01:03:24] So you know right in if I'm wrong
[01:03:26] Straight guy
[01:03:27] You're a straight guy
[01:03:28] Right but I yeah the straight is more important
[01:03:30] Than a white guy
[01:03:31] Apparently you downloaded a scene from this movie
[01:03:32] From Kazah
[01:03:33] Yeah I was a piece of garbage
[01:03:34] You know whatever you're a teenager
[01:03:35] Yeah I was a teenager
[01:03:36] But um I look at this film
[01:03:39] And from my perspective
[01:03:41] Where I'm speaking from no point of like
[01:03:43] You know knowledge or intelligence from this place
[01:03:46] I can't speak for other people
[01:03:47] I feel like this film doesn't really have
[01:03:50] That same sort of male gaze
[01:03:52] I look at this movie and I think it shoots
[01:03:54] Yeah no it's a pretty good job not being
[01:03:56] It's very different
[01:03:57] And I think it is because you know
[01:04:00] For reasons that are now like a lot more obvious
[01:04:03] Not to psychoanalyze this thing too deeply
[01:04:05] This is a film made by two filmmakers
[01:04:07] Who have this like immense fascination
[01:04:09] And respect for the female body
[01:04:11] Yeah
[01:04:12] Not as like something to covet
[01:04:14] You know but as something of like this
[01:04:16] This is like
[01:04:17] Griffin made a point
[01:04:19] Made the point
[01:04:20] I think you did an okay job
[01:04:21] I did an okay job
[01:04:22] I should get out of here
[01:04:23] Okay it becomes problematic
[01:04:24] I'd like to add to this in the sense that
[01:04:27] I kind of saw this movie from a millennial
[01:04:31] Kind of perspective
[01:04:32] Uh huh
[01:04:33] Um so we left off talking about
[01:04:36] How the mobsters show up right
[01:04:38] The second batch of mobsters
[01:04:40] You did John Ryan mobster yeah
[01:04:42] I guess I couldn't help but just think
[01:04:44] Like situationally with this whole film
[01:04:46] Like if there were cell phones
[01:04:48] Oh yeah
[01:04:49] Like that kind of thing
[01:04:50] And it was like almost refreshing again
[01:04:52] Like to remember those days
[01:04:54] Uh it's just it's interesting with like
[01:04:56] Modern movies now we're gonna have to
[01:04:58] Deal with the fact that everyone can be in touch
[01:05:01] With everybody at all times
[01:05:03] There's a plot hinge in this movie
[01:05:05] That is the phone being off the hook
[01:05:07] Right
[01:05:08] Which is something that doesn't exist anymore
[01:05:10] Yeah it's correct
[01:05:11] The first one is I was on silent
[01:05:13] Like do you know what I'm saying
[01:05:15] Yeah it's weird to think that way
[01:05:17] But it's actually a thing now
[01:05:19] It's also interesting because the matrix is
[01:05:21] Literally all about cell phones
[01:05:23] And it was like the first movie to be about
[01:05:25] Like where the cell phone is this like powerful prop
[01:05:28] But there's also I mean the opening
[01:05:29] The number like owning the matrix phone
[01:05:31] Was like an early thing
[01:05:32] Like when kids started getting cell phones
[01:05:33] You get that slide
[01:05:34] Yeah yeah yeah
[01:05:35] Um but the opening of the matrix
[01:05:37] Is Trinity using a pay phone
[01:05:39] Rather than a cell phone
[01:05:40] I mean it's phone based
[01:05:41] We're talking about Bound
[01:05:42] Talking about Bound
[01:05:43] Great movie
[01:05:44] Um
[01:05:45] No but
[01:05:46] We'll get to the matrix
[01:05:47] You just I do agree with you Ben
[01:05:48] That like
[01:05:49] Ben?
[01:05:50] I agree with Ben
[01:05:51] Go ahead
[01:05:52] Ben Benjamin
[01:05:53] No don't do the whole thing
[01:05:54] Don't do the whole thing
[01:05:55] What are you talking about
[01:05:56] No I'm just gonna say your name
[01:05:57] Benjamin
[01:05:58] Yes sir
[01:05:59] I agree with you that like
[01:06:00] I see movies like this
[01:06:01] And I get depressed thinking about
[01:06:03] How much advancements in technology
[01:06:06] Have made plot lines like
[01:06:08] Unnecessarily simple
[01:06:10] You know because now anyone can do anything
[01:06:12] At any time essentially
[01:06:13] But there are also things where you're like
[01:06:15] A phone being off the hook that's so visual
[01:06:17] Well and the image of Corky
[01:06:19] In the empty apartment with just the phone
[01:06:21] On the floor is great
[01:06:22] And like she's basically just waiting
[01:06:24] For you know like it's all to be over
[01:06:26] Like in the apartment it's great
[01:06:27] But there's like ten minutes of the movie
[01:06:29] Where in the background of all the shots
[01:06:31] They're in the bedroom
[01:06:32] You see the phone being off the hook
[01:06:34] They're not calling attention to it
[01:06:35] But it's there's a visual element
[01:06:36] So when they call it out later you're like
[01:06:38] Right of course I notice that
[01:06:39] Whereas the equivalent today would be
[01:06:41] Like you'd have to do a close up of a screen
[01:06:43] And then the little bell with the
[01:06:45] The line through it
[01:06:46] I agree
[01:06:47] Or like a mat you know
[01:06:48] Does anyone have a charger
[01:06:49] Oh no my phone's dead
[01:06:50] Like it's just it's so much
[01:06:52] Like more in elegant
[01:06:53] You know
[01:06:54] Well yes I agree with you guys
[01:06:55] But hey man this movie was made in 1996
[01:06:57] I know that's the best part
[01:06:58] Okay so here's what I'm gonna throw out
[01:06:59] I think all movies should be set in 1996
[01:07:01] Anyway
[01:07:03] That was the last good year
[01:07:04] Anyway let's just wrap up the plot of this movie
[01:07:07] It all comes apart
[01:07:09] Caesar eventually figures it out
[01:07:10] Like that Corky is involved
[01:07:12] He figures it out via the phone ringing
[01:07:14] In her apartment
[01:07:15] And he ties her up
[01:07:19] And like throws her in a closet
[01:07:21] Hey there's some fucking great fighting though
[01:07:23] Too
[01:07:24] Let's not forget that
[01:07:25] Yeah like I mean yeah
[01:07:26] Gina Gersheng gets a couple real
[01:07:28] Like cold cocks and the joy pants
[01:07:29] She's fucking awesome
[01:07:30] She's like the greatest
[01:07:31] She's cool
[01:07:34] She just never lets her kind of like
[01:07:37] In mass drop
[01:07:38] Like her sort of impassive
[01:07:39] You know persona
[01:07:40] Yes
[01:07:41] Even when she's being genuine
[01:07:43] And you get when she's being genuine
[01:07:44] But she
[01:07:45] Just always perfectly in character
[01:07:46] I love her in this movie
[01:07:47] Yeah
[01:07:49] Anyway yeah so you know
[01:07:50] He but then he has to make a deal
[01:07:51] With Violet to kind of play along
[01:07:52] Because he's trying to fool these other mobsters
[01:07:54] Cause now Joey pants is in the
[01:07:56] In the soup too
[01:07:57] Cause he killed Chris Maloney
[01:07:58] And he killed the Don
[01:08:00] So great scene she's in the bathroom
[01:08:02] He's like don't fucking do anything
[01:08:04] Or I'll fucking shoot you
[01:08:05] Like don't get smart
[01:08:06] Gina Gersheng is in the closet
[01:08:08] And he's
[01:08:10] You know she's all bruised up now
[01:08:12] And he's like just stay here
[01:08:14] I'm gonna pretend that I was in the shower
[01:08:16] Yeah he tries to distract the mobsters
[01:08:18] I didn't hear the phone ring
[01:08:19] Cause I was in the shower
[01:08:20] And then Tilly calls him
[01:08:22] Yes
[01:08:23] And says like just pretend
[01:08:25] Like there was a car accident
[01:08:26] And that's why the mobsters
[01:08:27] Didn't show up
[01:08:28] She calls and pretends to be Maloney
[01:08:31] And is like I'm creating a fake phone call for you
[01:08:34] So that you have an alibi
[01:08:36] And the story checks out
[01:08:37] But then she's also like
[01:08:39] I'm also getting half the money
[01:08:40] Like do as I say
[01:08:41] Yeah
[01:08:42] Yeah
[01:08:43] And so he tells the new mobsters
[01:08:46] This they buy it they leave
[01:08:49] And then
[01:08:51] How does it exactly
[01:08:52] I mean it plays out that Corky
[01:08:54] Kills Joey Pins
[01:08:56] Corky kills Caesar
[01:08:59] Yeah they um
[01:09:00] Caesar goes to get the money
[01:09:02] No Violet kills Caesar
[01:09:03] Yeah no Violet
[01:09:04] Right of course sorry
[01:09:05] There's a great
[01:09:06] Which is crucial of course
[01:09:07] Yeah Corky finally
[01:09:08] I mean Caesar finally gets it out of Corky
[01:09:10] The money's in the paint cans
[01:09:11] He goes to get it
[01:09:12] You know he's finally vulnerable
[01:09:14] Violet with a weapon
[01:09:16] Points a gun at him
[01:09:17] And he's like if you were gonna kill me
[01:09:18] You know you'd have killed me before
[01:09:20] Like I know you're not gonna kill me
[01:09:21] And she says like
[01:09:23] Caesar you don't know shit
[01:09:24] And then she
[01:09:25] You don't know shit about me
[01:09:26] And shoots him a bunch
[01:09:27] And he dies like in this like big puddle of paint
[01:09:30] And there's like what everywhere
[01:09:31] So it's a white and red
[01:09:32] It's great
[01:09:33] It's the best
[01:09:34] It's the best
[01:09:35] Can I talk about another sequence I love
[01:09:37] When Jennifer Tilly's trying to get away
[01:09:39] And she runs down the stairs
[01:09:41] And there are these great
[01:09:42] Oh yeah these these sort of moves up and down
[01:09:44] The banisters yeah
[01:09:45] Right so she's like running down the stairs
[01:09:47] There's a great shot from like the stair
[01:09:49] While you're looking up
[01:09:50] And you're seeing them like
[01:09:51] That's kind of blue velvety
[01:09:52] Yeah um and
[01:09:54] She makes it down to the ground floor
[01:09:56] Before he does
[01:09:57] And you're like
[01:09:58] You don't understand why she's like
[01:10:00] What exactly her plan is
[01:10:01] Like what she's doing
[01:10:02] Yeah
[01:10:03] It doesn't totally make sense
[01:10:04] The second she gets downstairs
[01:10:05] She runs to the elevator
[01:10:07] And it's like if she can get
[01:10:09] Back up
[01:10:10] In the elevator back upstairs
[01:10:11] She has like three minutes
[01:10:13] To get at the gun
[01:10:14] Yeah
[01:10:15] It's so cool
[01:10:16] To like get Gershon and get the gun
[01:10:18] And it's a great
[01:10:19] Low
[01:10:20] Steak action scene
[01:10:21] Yeah
[01:10:22] You know like the ties
[01:10:23] You know like
[01:10:24] Low budget action scene basically
[01:10:25] Like high tension low budget
[01:10:27] Action scenes are about the steaks
[01:10:28] You know
[01:10:29] That's not the wrong word
[01:10:30] But yeah you know
[01:10:31] It's not low steaks
[01:10:32] It's high steaks but it's
[01:10:33] It's high steaks but it's like
[01:10:34] It's not flashy
[01:10:35] It's a small set piece
[01:10:36] It's a small set piece
[01:10:37] But the steaks are so clear
[01:10:39] The spatial geography is so clear
[01:10:40] You understand what every character is trying to do
[01:10:42] And you're like edge of your seat
[01:10:44] Now here's the thing
[01:10:45] Like if this were a 40s
[01:10:47] Billy Wilder movie
[01:10:48] Or what a Hitchcock movie
[01:10:49] You know in a sort of
[01:10:50] Hayes Code Hollywood movie
[01:10:52] Like a classic noir
[01:10:54] Sort of winking
[01:10:55] Well no
[01:10:56] The other thing is like
[01:10:57] Everyone would be dead
[01:10:58] Or in prison at the end of this movie
[01:10:59] Correct
[01:11:00] Like you know
[01:11:01] Everyone would get their come up
[01:11:02] And anyone who does bad stuff
[01:11:03] Like steals or kills
[01:11:04] Yeah
[01:11:05] Would be like
[01:11:06] Would meet some sort of justice
[01:11:08] And they would imply that they were lovers
[01:11:10] But not be able to actually
[01:11:11] Forget all that
[01:11:12] But I think both elements
[01:11:13] I think are important
[01:11:14] Looking at it as a film
[01:11:15] That was made in the time
[01:11:16] It was made
[01:11:17] But here's what happens
[01:11:18] In this movie
[01:11:19] They kill Joey Pants
[01:11:20] They convince the mobsters
[01:11:21] That Joey Pants took the money
[01:11:23] The mobsters are like
[01:11:24] Hey fuck that guy
[01:11:25] We'll go get him
[01:11:26] You know
[01:11:27] I get it
[01:11:28] You want to get out of here
[01:11:29] And they're like
[01:11:30] Violet's like great
[01:11:31] She escapes with corking
[01:11:32] And two million bucks in a bag
[01:11:34] The end
[01:11:35] Yeah
[01:11:36] Then they'll go off and be happy
[01:11:37] Just go live their truth
[01:11:38] It's great
[01:11:39] Be millionaires
[01:11:41] Good movie
[01:11:42] It's great
[01:11:43] Great characters
[01:11:44] Happy to see things work out well for them
[01:11:45] For a while there I was worried
[01:11:47] But it all works out
[01:11:48] But it all works out
[01:11:49] I was worried about them
[01:11:50] I liked them
[01:11:51] I wanted things to be nice
[01:11:52] In the end
[01:11:53] There's some
[01:11:54] Here talk for a second
[01:11:55] There's some famous thing
[01:11:56] That I want to try and find
[01:11:58] Ben
[01:11:59] Any additional thoughts on the film
[01:12:00] For you?
[01:12:02] Well I would say
[01:12:03] In the end
[01:12:04] I mean fuck
[01:12:05] The Chowsky's
[01:12:06] Definitely passed the test with this
[01:12:08] Yeah right
[01:12:09] It's so good
[01:12:10] It's so good
[01:12:11] At first movie it's insane
[01:12:12] Yeah it's got a great story
[01:12:13] It's got really cool visual elements
[01:12:15] Like you know
[01:12:16] They set out to do that
[01:12:17] And I'm sure they impressed
[01:12:18] The executives
[01:12:19] And got to make the matrix
[01:12:21] Here's another thing
[01:12:22] I'll say about it too
[01:12:23] Right
[01:12:24] If we're talking writer directors
[01:12:26] Right people who are multi hyphenates
[01:12:28] And do both
[01:12:30] Very often
[01:12:31] They start out
[01:12:32] Being better at one thing
[01:12:33] Than the other thing
[01:12:34] You know
[01:12:35] Like I mean
[01:12:36] A lot of filmmakers are
[01:12:37] Better at one than the other
[01:12:38] But the people who become masters
[01:12:40] They start out
[01:12:41] Okay they're a good shooter
[01:12:42] And then their scripts get better
[01:12:44] Or vice versa
[01:12:45] This is a film where like
[01:12:46] Both skill sets
[01:12:48] Are in full force
[01:12:49] And it's actually
[01:12:50] I mean the thing
[01:12:51] It's sort of similar to
[01:12:52] Is blood simple in that way
[01:12:54] Absolutely a lot of blood simple
[01:12:55] Here's this two headed filmmaker
[01:12:57] These siblings
[01:12:58] Who clearly have this very close
[01:13:00] Like symbiotic relationship right
[01:13:02] And are able to just sort of like
[01:13:04] Do twice as much work
[01:13:06] Because they have another person
[01:13:08] At their side
[01:13:09] And just this script that's super tight
[01:13:11] This really fucking sharp
[01:13:14] Like cinematic language
[01:13:16] Like really like no fat filmmaking
[01:13:20] And just like a bold like statement
[01:13:22] Of like we're fucking here to stay
[01:13:25] We're real deal filmmakers
[01:13:27] Absolutely
[01:13:28] I wanted to say one thing
[01:13:29] We forgot to mention this movie
[01:13:30] Was produced by Dino de Laurentiis
[01:13:32] Another famous parody of a Hollywood
[01:13:34] Filmmaker producer
[01:13:35] And Aaron Spelling
[01:13:36] Is that right?
[01:13:37] The production company before the movie
[01:13:39] Was the spelling company
[01:13:40] Well he's not listed as a producer
[01:13:41] But maybe
[01:13:42] Interesting
[01:13:43] But Dino de Laurentiis who was like
[01:13:44] This you know crazy Italian guy
[01:13:46] Who made a lot of great movies
[01:13:47] And a lot of terrible movies
[01:13:48] Made the King Kong remake
[01:13:49] He also made like Sons of the Lambs
[01:13:51] Yeah
[01:13:52] Or is it manhunter
[01:13:53] I think it's manhunter
[01:13:54] He made manhunter so he retained the rights
[01:13:56] Right
[01:13:57] He didn't do Sons of the Lambs
[01:13:58] But then he produced all the other
[01:13:59] Hannibal
[01:14:00] He produced Hannibal and right
[01:14:01] He's always been Red Dragon
[01:14:02] Red Dragon
[01:14:03] Yeah
[01:14:04] He's now dead
[01:14:05] He's also the father of
[01:14:06] Giada de Laurentiis
[01:14:07] Or grandfather
[01:14:08] Something like that
[01:14:09] But I wanted to say about him
[01:14:10] Is he we went to the Wachowskis
[01:14:12] And what can I only imagine was a cartoonish
[01:14:14] Super Mario Brothers accent
[01:14:15] Said like
[01:14:16] Don't make it a lesbians
[01:14:17] Make it you know
[01:14:18] Get a guy in there
[01:14:19] It's more commercial
[01:14:20] I don't know how you actually talk
[01:14:21] I heard Arnold Schwarzenegger on a podcast
[01:14:23] And they were refused
[01:14:24] They were like this is not how
[01:14:25] Like that's not the idea of this movie
[01:14:27] The idea of this movie is very
[01:14:28] Tied to the fact that these are two women
[01:14:30] Dilaranis produced the Conan the
[01:14:32] Barbarian movies
[01:14:33] And I heard some podcast where Arnold Schwarzenegger
[01:14:35] Was talking about that process
[01:14:37] And it was Arnold Schwarzenegger
[01:14:38] Doing his impression
[01:14:39] Of Dino de Laurentiis
[01:14:40] So it was like a hat on a hat
[01:14:42] It was like one of the cartonious
[01:14:44] Accents of all time trying to do
[01:14:46] Another of the cartonious accents of all time
[01:14:48] My favorite thing about watching
[01:14:50] Dino de Laurentiis productions
[01:14:52] Going through the credits
[01:14:53] And seeing how many people have
[01:14:55] Dilaranis as a last name
[01:14:56] Hey man he was old school
[01:14:58] I know I'm not saying in a negative way
[01:15:00] It's like fun it's like
[01:15:01] Oh Michelle Dilaranis is the caterer
[01:15:03] Right
[01:15:04] Like there's just a lot of Dilaranis
[01:15:06] It's a family business
[01:15:07] The movie was not a hit
[01:15:09] By any means it made like four million bucks
[01:15:12] You know basically didn't even make
[01:15:14] Its budget back
[01:15:15] But I don't think that was
[01:15:16] It became a cult hit
[01:15:17] I think it had a pretty long life
[01:15:19] On video and like you know it became
[01:15:21] Sort of like this don't make any jokes
[01:15:23] Became this sort of like you know
[01:15:25] Legendary little cult movie
[01:15:26] It's huge on Kazaa
[01:15:29] That was the only joke I was going to make
[01:15:31] And yeah it's great
[01:15:33] It's a great movie
[01:15:34] And it was enough to convince
[01:15:36] I guess Warner Brothers and Silver Pictures
[01:15:38] To like take this chance on the Matrix script
[01:15:40] Yeah I wouldn't be surprised if it was a big
[01:15:42] Home video seller
[01:15:43] Like I was like
[01:15:44] I didn't have a tough time watching this movie in a theater
[01:15:46] Like we said these VHS
[01:15:48] Like legends of the 90s
[01:15:50] These like these great trashy thrillers
[01:15:52] Except this is even better than
[01:15:54] You know Jade or whatever you know
[01:15:56] But also if you're a film kid
[01:15:57] And you see the Matrix
[01:15:58] You walk out there and go
[01:15:59] I gotta fucking see with these
[01:16:00] Well of course
[01:16:01] Of course that in
[01:16:02] Butchauskies what do they make
[01:16:03] That increase the
[01:16:04] Where they come from
[01:16:05] The legend of this movie
[01:16:06] You know way more
[01:16:07] Because it's like
[01:16:08] Oh here that's the movie they made
[01:16:09] Before the Matrix
[01:16:10] I hadn't seen it until now
[01:16:11] But you know what
[01:16:12] It was a pleasant treat
[01:16:13] Because I've seen all these other films
[01:16:15] So it's like this is the one
[01:16:16] I get to discover fresh
[01:16:18] So it's a little bit of trivia
[01:16:20] Please
[01:16:21] I'll lay some trivia on you
[01:16:22] Is this the I&B trivia section?
[01:16:24] It is
[01:16:25] Well so you know
[01:16:26] Take it with a grain of salt
[01:16:28] At first
[01:16:29] Jennifer Tilly was going to play Corky
[01:16:31] And
[01:16:33] The actress who was going to play Violet
[01:16:34] Whoever that was dropped out
[01:16:36] And they found Gina Gershyn
[01:16:37] Who was like suddenly available
[01:16:39] Or whatever
[01:16:40] And Jennifer Tilly agreed
[01:16:42] She'd be a better Corky
[01:16:43] And happily switched roles
[01:16:44] A better Violet
[01:16:46] She agreed Gina Gershyn would be
[01:16:47] A better Corky
[01:16:49] Good call
[01:16:51] Yeah
[01:16:52] Gershyn then
[01:16:54] Recommended Joey Pants
[01:16:56] So she brought Joey Pants on board
[01:16:58] They told Joey Pants to watch
[01:16:59] The Treasure of the Sierra Madre
[01:17:01] To base his performance on Bogart
[01:17:03] They liked that
[01:17:04] Like as a sort of like
[01:17:05] Seizures kind of chip on the shoulder
[01:17:07] Attitude kind of performance
[01:17:08] He's so good
[01:17:09] Yeah
[01:17:11] Susie Bright
[01:17:12] They sent her the script
[01:17:13] They loved her
[01:17:14] And she said
[01:17:15] Like this is a great script
[01:17:16] And the women are having sex
[01:17:17] And enjoying it
[01:17:18] And not apologizing
[01:17:19] Which is very rare
[01:17:20] For any Hollywood movie
[01:17:21] And said like
[01:17:23] But the script's low on details
[01:17:24] For the sex scene
[01:17:25] Can I like design the sex scenes
[01:17:26] For you
[01:17:27] And obviously
[01:17:29] Like that's one reason
[01:17:30] The sex scene works so well
[01:17:31] And the rest was history
[01:17:32] You know
[01:17:33] Marcia Gay Hardin audition
[01:17:34] She would have been good
[01:17:35] Oh she would have been good
[01:17:36] For which one
[01:17:37] It doesn't say
[01:17:38] But you know
[01:17:39] She'd probably work in either
[01:17:40] I'd say her role in Miller's
[01:17:42] Crossing is pretty similar to
[01:17:43] Violet in this
[01:17:44] There's you know
[01:17:45] Yeah definitely
[01:17:46] I mean as the sort of gangsters
[01:17:47] Mole
[01:17:48] Yeah but the one who's actually
[01:17:49] Sort of running the thing
[01:17:51] That's I mean
[01:17:52] You can watch that movie
[01:17:53] And put together a pretty clear
[01:17:54] Parallel universe version
[01:17:55] Of her being in that
[01:17:57] Jennifer Tilly considers
[01:17:58] Violet her greatest role
[01:18:00] Yeah I'd probably agree
[01:18:01] Yeah I mean it's her most
[01:18:03] Three dimensional like
[01:18:04] You know sort of like
[01:18:07] Fully fleshed out role
[01:18:08] With like a lot of agents
[01:18:09] She's hilarious
[01:18:10] In bullets of a Broadway
[01:18:12] But she's playing a stereotype
[01:18:13] She's playing like the air head
[01:18:14] Actress
[01:18:15] I can't put the better metaphor
[01:18:16] Than the gun thing
[01:18:17] The loaded gun thing
[01:18:18] Jennifer Tilly is like
[01:18:19] A really good pair of cowboy boots
[01:18:21] And it's like you have to
[01:18:22] Know when to wear cowboy boots
[01:18:23] You know what I'm saying
[01:18:24] Like you have to match them
[01:18:25] With your outfit
[01:18:26] Like it has to be of a piece
[01:18:28] Right
[01:18:29] Great fucking boots
[01:18:32] Oh
[01:18:34] One Violet was
[01:18:36] Linda Hamilton was almost Violet
[01:18:38] Linda Hamilton
[01:18:39] Which she would have been a better
[01:18:40] Corky almost
[01:18:41] Cause she's like tough as nails
[01:18:42] Yeah I don't see her as well
[01:18:43] I mean you think of her
[01:18:44] And terminate her obviously
[01:18:45] Maybe she's trying to play against type
[01:18:46] I don't know
[01:18:47] Shot in 38 days
[01:18:51] Yeah
[01:18:53] This is also Joey Pintz's
[01:18:54] Favorite role of his
[01:18:56] God I think he's still good
[01:18:57] In the Matrix
[01:18:58] I would have given an Oscar
[01:18:59] Nomination for the Matrix
[01:19:00] He's fantastic in the Matrix
[01:19:01] His Stake Mollon
[01:19:03] His Stake Mollon is great
[01:19:04] I would have given him
[01:19:05] A Oscar nomination for Memento
[01:19:08] Which I think is one of his
[01:19:09] Best profiles
[01:19:10] For me to watch Memento
[01:19:11] I've only seen it once
[01:19:12] You've only seen it once
[01:19:13] Yeah
[01:19:14] Which means I haven't even
[01:19:15] Really seen it
[01:19:16] You know
[01:19:17] With a film like that
[01:19:18] You should definitely
[01:19:19] Reaction it
[01:19:20] I watched it once probably
[01:19:21] Why don't you do Nolan one day though
[01:19:22] Yeah
[01:19:23] I mean Nolan's a classic
[01:19:24] Blank Checker
[01:19:25] Yeah
[01:19:26] He's a classic Blank Checker
[01:19:28] God you know the one
[01:19:29] We always talk about
[01:19:30] Why are you doing this
[01:19:31] Come up recently
[01:19:32] Jimmy Cameron
[01:19:33] The great Jimmy Cameron
[01:19:34] Jimmy Cameron
[01:19:35] I like keep on being like
[01:19:36] God we'll just wait for like
[01:19:37] Avatar 2
[01:19:38] Look the man takes him up
[01:19:39] So we can come up with that
[01:19:40] But that's like he keeps on
[01:19:41] Now we're getting 5 of them
[01:19:43] He went to CinemaCon yesterday
[01:19:45] Which is a stupid
[01:19:47] Industry conference
[01:19:48] Of cinema chains and studios
[01:19:50] Theater owners
[01:19:51] And the stars come out
[01:19:52] And they're like
[01:19:53] You gotta book my movie
[01:19:54] People are gonna love it
[01:19:55] Which makes no sense
[01:19:56] Cause it's like
[01:19:57] They're gonna come out
[01:19:58] Like it's gonna like
[01:19:59] You know has to sell them on
[01:20:00] Like Mission Impossible 6
[01:20:01] Or whatever
[01:20:02] I think they're like
[01:20:03] Yeah definitely
[01:20:04] Like you know we weren't worried
[01:20:05] About that
[01:20:06] But Warner Brothers sends Kevin Hart
[01:20:07] Out and he's like
[01:20:08] Please please put my movie
[01:20:09] In your theaters
[01:20:10] It's not like they come out
[01:20:11] And they say like
[01:20:12] We've got this indie project
[01:20:13] But we really think it's gonna
[01:20:14] Pop
[01:20:15] You know they just come out
[01:20:16] And say like
[01:20:17] The biggest stuff
[01:20:18] One of the Avengers movies
[01:20:19] On the way
[01:20:20] Yeah as if all these
[01:20:21] Like exhibitors are saying
[01:20:22] They're going like
[01:20:23] I don't know if we should
[01:20:24] Book a Kevin Hart movie
[01:20:25] So it's just
[01:20:26] They're like
[01:20:27] A place for studios
[01:20:30] To just like promote
[01:20:31] Their upcoming franchises
[01:20:33] And say like
[01:20:34] We've got films planned
[01:20:35] Through 2023
[01:20:36] Or what you know
[01:20:37] It's as much about your
[01:20:38] Devin Faraches
[01:20:39] And your Peter Saretas
[01:20:40] And so forth
[01:20:41] And so on
[01:20:42] Covering
[01:20:43] I love Devin
[01:20:44] I mean
[01:20:45] I don't know
[01:20:46] I'm saying that in a negative way
[01:20:47] You know Devin's fun
[01:20:48] Because he's at this thing
[01:20:49] And he's like
[01:20:50] He's calm bullshit
[01:20:51] He's calm bullshit on it
[01:20:52] But yes absolutely
[01:20:53] The sort of LA industry
[01:20:54] Like film blogger types
[01:20:55] What I mean is that
[01:20:56] This convention that's ostensibly
[01:20:58] Just to sell the theater
[01:21:00] Owners has as much become
[01:21:01] Like a press event
[01:21:03] So show footage for the first time
[01:21:04] But it's a weird thing
[01:21:05] That doesn't really make sense anymore
[01:21:07] It doesn't anyway
[01:21:08] Jim Cameron was there
[01:21:09] I guess who made Avatar Fox?
[01:21:11] Fox
[01:21:12] Yeah and he said like
[01:21:13] Cinematic universes
[01:21:15] I got a cinematic universe for ya
[01:21:17] Avatar 2
[01:21:18] Avatar 3
[01:21:19] Avatar 4
[01:21:20] Avatar 5
[01:21:21] Right so Avatar
[01:21:22] And everyone's reaction was like
[01:21:23] What the fuck is that for?
[01:21:25] 5 avatars?
[01:21:26] Avatar 2 I think was originally
[01:21:27] Supposed to come out last December
[01:21:29] Something like that around now
[01:21:30] That was like the original date
[01:21:31] Like the first one came out in 09
[01:21:33] Yes
[01:21:34] Yeah I think that was the original plan
[01:21:36] And he was like
[01:21:37] You know
[01:21:38] Okay it's gonna take a little longer
[01:21:39] But I got 3 of them
[01:21:40] And then it was like
[01:21:41] We're pushing it back a little
[01:21:42] But good news it's 4
[01:21:43] And no one's ever gotten out of
[01:21:45] Zoe Saldana or whoever
[01:21:46] If they've actually like
[01:21:47] Shot
[01:21:48] Avatar movies
[01:21:49] Yeah very unclear
[01:21:50] The whole thing is always
[01:21:51] I mean the original Avatar was too
[01:21:53] Where it was like people would say
[01:21:54] Zoe Saldana or Sam Worthington
[01:21:56] Like so Avatar and they're like
[01:21:57] Yeah I guess so
[01:21:58] I think I shot that like 3 years ago now
[01:22:00] I guess that's coming out
[01:22:01] Like you know
[01:22:02] There was
[01:22:03] God I wish I could
[01:22:05] Properly credit this person
[01:22:06] But there was an amazing tweet
[01:22:07] I saw yesterday after the announcement
[01:22:09] Which was like
[01:22:10] Cameron announcing more Avatar movies
[01:22:12] While he also delays the
[01:22:14] Like the next one
[01:22:15] Is sort of like
[01:22:16] The principal in breakfast club
[01:22:18] Like the scene where he's like
[01:22:20] You want 6 weeks attention let's make it 6
[01:22:22] He's like fine 7
[01:22:23] Right
[01:22:24] Like
[01:22:25] It's like this game of like
[01:22:27] Was an Avatar 2 supposed to come out a month ago
[01:22:28] And he's like yeah but now we got 7 of them
[01:22:30] Don't worry about it
[01:22:32] I mean
[01:22:33] We'll do Jim Cameron at some point
[01:22:34] We should definitely do Jim Cameron
[01:22:35] At some point soon
[01:22:36] Jimmy Cameron
[01:22:37] Because I do
[01:22:38] I mean I think my tweet was long lines
[01:22:39] Of like if Jim Cameron thinks
[01:22:40] We need 5 avatars
[01:22:41] Then we need 5 avatars
[01:22:42] Because he doesn't make bad movies
[01:22:45] Yeah he also
[01:22:46] Anytime he's done something
[01:22:47] Now a lot of people think
[01:22:48] Avatar is a bad movie
[01:22:49] People disagree with them
[01:22:50] They are wrong
[01:22:51] Hardcore
[01:22:52] Ben how do you feel about Avatar
[01:22:53] I never saw it
[01:22:54] Ben do you know the central
[01:22:56] Conceit of Avatar
[01:22:58] There's like a blue race of people
[01:23:02] Do you know the height of those blue people
[01:23:04] Oh wait no are you
[01:23:06] They're like 10 feet tall
[01:23:07] They're big
[01:23:08] They are big
[01:23:09] Get the fuck out of here
[01:23:10] I forgot about that
[01:23:11] They're like really big Ben
[01:23:12] I love this
[01:23:13] I want to see this now
[01:23:14] Yeah you'll love it Ben
[01:23:16] Oh my god
[01:23:17] Alright I'm excited
[01:23:18] I might even watch that
[01:23:20] And then report back next week
[01:23:22] We'll see
[01:23:23] Okay and speaking of reports
[01:23:24] I think it's time for our favorite segment
[01:23:26] To close out the episode
[01:23:30] The burger report
[01:23:31] So of course this is a segment
[01:23:33] That we sometimes remember to do
[01:23:34] Yeah in which we talk about
[01:23:36] Seeing famous people eating burgers
[01:23:38] It was inspired by that time
[01:23:39] I saw Michael Shannon eat a burger
[01:23:41] And I saw some
[01:23:42] Oh I saw a Chivo
[01:23:44] Chivo Lubezki
[01:23:46] Yes
[01:23:47] And Ben Hosley basically has seen
[01:23:50] Every American president eat a burger
[01:23:52] While like getting like
[01:23:53] Felicio from Maryland Moneray
[01:23:55] Like he's seen like the most
[01:23:56] Salacious incredible things
[01:23:58] When he worked at the Spotted Pig
[01:24:00] A restaurant known for its burger
[01:24:02] I just love that this segment
[01:24:03] Has nothing to do with the rest
[01:24:04] Of our podcast
[01:24:05] But I like it as a through line
[01:24:07] You were in LA
[01:24:08] You were in Los Angeles
[01:24:09] And guess what
[01:24:10] I went to Yamami Burger
[01:24:11] Big Fat Goose Egg
[01:24:13] Oh there was nobody
[01:24:14] Big Fat Goose Egg
[01:24:15] I saw my bestest friend
[01:24:17] Derek Simon
[01:24:18] How's he doing?
[01:24:19] Does he listen?
[01:24:20] Does he listen?
[01:24:21] I think he doesn't
[01:24:22] I don't know
[01:24:23] Hey Derek if you listen
[01:24:24] He's a writer for Supergirl
[01:24:25] That was the closest I got to a FAMO
[01:24:27] And I've known him since I was 10
[01:24:29] Wow
[01:24:30] So that doesn't count
[01:24:31] It doesn't
[01:24:32] So yeah
[01:24:33] I fortunately came up short
[01:24:35] But I'm gonna make a promise
[01:24:36] To the listeners
[01:24:37] I'm gonna try to
[01:24:38] To end as many burger joints
[01:24:39] As I can in the next week
[01:24:41] I'm trying to eat less burgers
[01:24:42] To be honest
[01:24:43] I'm trying even more
[01:24:44] I need content
[01:24:45] You know what I'm saying?
[01:24:46] But Ben
[01:24:47] Do you want to serve us up a nice
[01:24:48] Patty or a girl?
[01:24:49] Yeah you out Ben
[01:24:50] Or do you have any more?
[01:24:51] No
[01:24:52] I actually honestly could keep this going
[01:24:53] For a while
[01:24:54] Fantastic
[01:24:55] Good thing cause we're never ending this segment
[01:24:57] Great
[01:24:58] So like we've been like
[01:24:59] Michael Shannon
[01:25:00] The cinematographer from the Revenant
[01:25:01] Ben's been like
[01:25:02] Kanye West
[01:25:03] LeBron James
[01:25:04] One of the most famous people
[01:25:05] LeBron James got a haircut
[01:25:07] At the bar
[01:25:08] And then I served him a burger
[01:25:10] Allegedly
[01:25:11] Allegedly
[01:25:12] Allegedly
[01:25:13] Okay
[01:25:14] So
[01:25:15] Jay-Z's book
[01:25:17] Oh boy this is already such a good start
[01:25:19] Jay-Z's book what was it called?
[01:25:21] Decoded?
[01:25:22] Yeah I think it was decoded
[01:25:24] It wasn't that but it was something close
[01:25:25] So he is like a part owner
[01:25:28] Of the restaurant group
[01:25:30] That falls under the umbrella
[01:25:32] Like the spotted pig is part of
[01:25:34] Yeah it was called decoded
[01:25:35] That makes sense
[01:25:36] Nice work
[01:25:37] Yeah
[01:25:38] So yeah
[01:25:39] He has a little chunk of the meat
[01:25:41] He has a little chunk of the spotted pig
[01:25:44] Exactly
[01:25:45] And so he had an event
[01:25:47] Around the premiere of his book
[01:25:49] At the spotted pig
[01:25:51] And there was a bunch of people there
[01:25:53] It was really cool
[01:25:54] It was like Chris Rock
[01:25:55] Damn
[01:25:56] I'm like blanking like
[01:25:59] Maybe like Alicia Keys
[01:26:01] Okay
[01:26:02] But a bunch of
[01:26:04] So that's what the story is about
[01:26:06] How does he do this?
[01:26:08] How does Ben do this?
[01:26:09] He's the fucking best and the best
[01:26:11] That's how he does it
[01:26:12] So yeah so
[01:26:14] The Jay-Z and Beyoncé came in
[01:26:18] And they were kind of just chatting with people
[01:26:20] But then at one point
[01:26:22] Went to this
[01:26:23] If you know the spotted pig on the second floor
[01:26:25] There's like a little like kind of alcove
[01:26:27] Like a little separate area
[01:26:28] And when we have VIPs
[01:26:29] Sometimes we'll put the curtains up
[01:26:31] So they feel like they're a little more secluded
[01:26:33] And so basically I got the opportunity
[01:26:35] To have some face time with Beyoncé and Jay-Z
[01:26:38] And they were super nice
[01:26:40] They were really lovely people
[01:26:41] That's very nice to hear
[01:26:42] I will say
[01:26:43] I don't
[01:26:45] I don't remember
[01:26:46] They might have got a burger
[01:26:48] I don't remember exactly
[01:26:50] But I will say that Beyoncé was
[01:26:52] Probably one of the most beautiful women
[01:26:55] If not the most beautiful woman I've ever seen in person
[01:26:57] Now Ben
[01:26:58] God
[01:26:59] We're gonna chew them out
[01:27:00] A little bit
[01:27:01] I mean look
[01:27:02] Thank you for sharing this story with us
[01:27:04] But Ben
[01:27:05] You're saying maybe they got a burger
[01:27:07] We can't
[01:27:08] We have listeners at home
[01:27:09] This is the burger report
[01:27:11] Right
[01:27:12] We can't be wishy-washy with this
[01:27:14] No, okay
[01:27:15] How about this?
[01:27:16] Beyoncé she got a burger
[01:27:17] Oh my God
[01:27:18] Medium rare
[01:27:19] American cheese on that
[01:27:21] She got American cheese
[01:27:23] And she
[01:27:24] Yeah, medium rare girl
[01:27:25] I wanna say something that I feel to be
[01:27:27] Profoundly and violently true
[01:27:29] If you get a burger with any kind of cheese
[01:27:31] That's not American cheese
[01:27:32] You fucking suck
[01:27:34] And you're a communist
[01:27:35] And you should be thrown in jail
[01:27:36] Sounds like I'm a communist
[01:27:39] Yeah, definitely a communist
[01:27:40] Yep, only American cheese
[01:27:41] Cause I fuck around with them cheeses
[01:27:43] Nope
[01:27:44] When I met some fancy place and they were like
[01:27:46] We put a Gruyere on it
[01:27:47] And I'm like uh-huh
[01:27:48] How about you take the Gruyere off
[01:27:49] And put on a slice of Kraft American cheese
[01:27:52] I don't care if your burger's made out of
[01:27:54] You know, filet mignon
[01:27:56] You know what I say?
[01:27:57] What?
[01:27:58] I say you can call me Cookie Monster
[01:27:59] Cause I'll take a slice of
[01:28:00] Monster cheese on my burger
[01:28:02] I will say
[01:28:03] Monster is a terrific cheese
[01:28:05] Hell's yeah
[01:28:06] And it melts very well
[01:28:07] I like some crumbled blue
[01:28:09] Nah, you lost me
[01:28:10] Love it
[01:28:11] Lost me
[01:28:12] Hey, stay tuned for the next burger report
[01:28:14] Let's talk about John Mayer
[01:28:16] Oh, that's a good cheese
[01:28:19] New York City Legendaries asshole John Mayer
[01:28:22] God, that's such a good cliffhanger
[01:28:24] Yeah, let's just say he was wearing a puffy vest jacket
[01:28:26] Tell us no more
[01:28:27] Tell us no more
[01:28:28] Save it for the next episode
[01:28:29] We need listeners to come back
[01:28:30] Because God knows no one's gonna want to hear us
[01:28:32] about The Matrix, one of the biggest movies of all time
[01:28:34] Of course
[01:28:35] Love the Wachowskis
[01:28:37] They're great
[01:28:38] I'm very excited to talk about this episode
[01:28:40] I mean this, these directors
[01:28:42] We were saying before we record this
[01:28:44] Like it's nice to go into a miniseries
[01:28:46] And be like, I don't
[01:28:48] I'm not bummed about watching any of these movies
[01:28:50] They're not these movies where I'm like
[01:28:51] Oh fuck, is that Time of the Week again?
[01:28:53] Yeah, I mean some people I think would disagree
[01:28:55] And say that The Matrix pre-sequels
[01:28:57] Or even like Cloud Atlas or Jupiter Sending
[01:28:59] Or Chores
[01:29:00] No, they are not
[01:29:01] They're great
[01:29:03] So there's not one that you don't like?
[01:29:06] I don't like The Matrix pre-sequels
[01:29:07] But I haven't seen them since they came out
[01:29:09] You're probably still not gonna like them
[01:29:10] But we'll see
[01:29:11] I liked Reloaded Okay
[01:29:13] But you're excited to rewatch them
[01:29:14] I'm very excited to rewatch them
[01:29:15] I strongly disliked Revolutions
[01:29:16] I would say Revolutions is the only film there
[01:29:18] I disliked but I have not seen it since then
[01:29:20] Yeah, we'll see
[01:29:21] And I don't stand behind anything
[01:29:23] I believed when I was 14 years old
[01:29:25] I mean I also at the time
[01:29:27] Strongly disliked them
[01:29:28] But we'll get to that
[01:29:29] But next week we're gonna do an episode about The Matrix
[01:29:32] The Matrix
[01:29:33] Which was a successful film
[01:29:35] It was a big movie
[01:29:37] In 1999
[01:29:38] Hey, you know what's interesting?
[01:29:39] Mm-hmm
[01:29:40] The Matrix
[01:29:41] Uh-huh
[01:29:42] It is interesting
[01:29:43] The Phantom Menace
[01:29:44] 1999 baby
[01:29:45] Maybe this podcast should be called
[01:29:47] 1999
[01:29:48] Baby
[01:29:50] Isn't that crazy that like the three films
[01:29:52] That we've really focused on
[01:29:53] That everything like our investigations have spun out
[01:29:55] Of all three, 99
[01:29:57] They're directors who popped in 99
[01:29:59] Which is generally agreed to be like a high point
[01:30:02] In American cinema
[01:30:03] Yeah
[01:30:04] In worldwide cinema
[01:30:05] Georgie Forge didn't pop until 99
[01:30:07] That was when he got his moment
[01:30:09] He popped in 99
[01:30:10] Maybe he'd pop before
[01:30:12] Big pop
[01:30:13] Big poppy
[01:30:14] Pop, pop
[01:30:15] Uh
[01:30:16] George Lucas we love you
[01:30:18] Georgie
[01:30:19] Make a movie
[01:30:20] Make one of your read our movies Georgie
[01:30:21] Make a fucking movie about a car going around the track
[01:30:23] Make a movie about anything
[01:30:25] Seriously
[01:30:27] But if you want to understand this bit
[01:30:29] Go back to our original
[01:30:31] Three seasons of the
[01:30:32] We went to our original 36 episodes
[01:30:35] And you'll get it
[01:30:36] Yeah
[01:30:37] The Phantom Podcast
[01:30:38] Attack the podcast
[01:30:39] Revenge of the podcast
[01:30:40] Great
[01:30:41] Listen
[01:30:42] All
[01:30:43] Uh, they are
[01:30:44] Yeah
[01:30:45] And then you can listen
[01:30:46] Yeah, we talked about M. Night Shyamalan
[01:30:47] You can listen to that
[01:30:48] Uh, write reviews
[01:30:49] Subscribe
[01:30:50] Um
[01:30:51] Ben, you threw out last week the challenge
[01:30:53] To see if anyone could write a book report on
[01:30:56] What's it called?
[01:30:57] I got schooled
[01:30:58] M. Night Shyamalan
[01:30:59] Yeah, and we've gotten some tweets about that
[01:31:00] A couple people
[01:31:01] M. Night Shyamalan's book about the education reform
[01:31:03] Yeah
[01:31:04] Yes
[01:31:05] Uh, it's his book explaining how he would
[01:31:06] It's essentially the cookbook
[01:31:08] If the cookbook was focused only on fixing schools
[01:31:11] But it's a lot of crazy ideas that people might not like
[01:31:13] I found a review that's really annoyed at me
[01:31:15] I should uh
[01:31:16] I should uh
[01:31:17] Read it out loud
[01:31:18] Oh yeah please
[01:31:19] Uh, this is from Steve Morth
[01:31:21] Crabby David ruins it
[01:31:23] Oh but were you gonna finish your point?
[01:31:24] Well I was just gonna say
[01:31:25] So this is a running thing
[01:31:26] You know, some people have tweeted us
[01:31:28] Showed us that they've checked out the book from their library
[01:31:30] Of course if you've read the book
[01:31:31] You wanna write a book report
[01:31:33] Uh, sent to us we'll read it on it
[01:31:35] The first person to uh
[01:31:36] Uh
[01:31:37] Keep it short guys
[01:31:38] Keep it short
[01:31:39] We might not read the whole script
[01:31:40] Keep it short words please
[01:31:41] Yes, but uh
[01:31:42] First person, I'll say this
[01:31:43] First person to uh
[01:31:44] Uh send us a book report
[01:31:46] Gets a uh
[01:31:47] A contact chip
[01:31:48] I think I still got some contact chips left
[01:31:50] But don't make the report anything like
[01:31:52] Griffin's book report
[01:31:54] No that was not a book report
[01:31:56] Or you would have
[01:31:57] That was a research paper
[01:31:58] But yes please
[01:31:59] Use that as an example of what not to do
[01:32:01] Review
[01:32:02] Oh Steve Morth, he gave us three stars
[01:32:04] Cause I ruined the podcast
[01:32:05] Crabby David ruins it
[01:32:07] I was burning through this star
[01:32:08] I can't read the whole thing it's long
[01:32:10] But apparently during the Star Wars episodes
[01:32:11] We hit a point
[01:32:12] Uh definitely around the original trilogy
[01:32:15] Maybe a little before
[01:32:16] And um bearable on Return of the Jedi
[01:32:18] Where whenever David Griffin tries to talk about something
[01:32:20] David gets really crabby
[01:32:21] And makes him hurry up
[01:32:22] And says something like
[01:32:23] Alright what's your point hurry up
[01:32:25] Uh it's funny once when it gets funny and stressful
[01:32:27] David we're listening to the podcast
[01:32:28] Cause we like hearing you guys talk about this stuff
[01:32:30] Alright buddy
[01:32:31] I'm sorry
[01:32:32] Okay okay good review
[01:32:33] Finish it up
[01:32:34] Finish it up
[01:32:35] Get to the point
[01:32:36] Uh apparently our friend E. Bancher
[01:32:38] Got downright hostile
[01:32:39] I think a couple things
[01:32:40] One the Return of the Jedi episode
[01:32:42] I got, I snapped at you
[01:32:44] Cause you were driving me crazy
[01:32:45] But also because we were so worked up
[01:32:47] About the fuckin force awakens
[01:32:49] We were recording like three episodes in one day
[01:32:52] We were recording three episodes in one day
[01:32:53] In between the day that all the press
[01:32:55] Had seen the force awakens
[01:32:56] And the day that we could see it
[01:32:57] So like a bunch of our buddies had seen it
[01:33:00] It was crazy
[01:33:01] And here we were recording a fuckin Star Wars podcast
[01:33:04] And you start going on about Marcia fuckin Lucas
[01:33:06] Well I think it's a fascinating
[01:33:07] It is it's fascinating
[01:33:08] But also we had to like wrap it up
[01:33:10] Like tightly and we had talked about
[01:33:12] Maybe Jabba the Hutt in Return of the Jedi
[01:33:14] That's all that's worth talking about
[01:33:16] I only fuck a Jabba
[01:33:17] We had like two hours of movie to go
[01:33:19] And you were like anyway so Marcia Lucas
[01:33:21] But uh
[01:33:22] Love Marcia
[01:33:23] But anyway
[01:33:24] Yeah I know I snapped at Griffin
[01:33:26] But you know what guys
[01:33:27] If I didn't do it he'd literally talk for five hours
[01:33:29] About God knows what
[01:33:30] Yeah and also here's the thing
[01:33:31] I think that's the dynamic
[01:33:33] Do you know what I'm saying
[01:33:34] Man if you don't like it I get it
[01:33:35] Like I'm gonna be annoying
[01:33:37] And you're gonna snap at me
[01:33:38] You know what I'm saying
[01:33:39] Right
[01:33:40] And like if you didn't cut me off
[01:33:41] Then you would have talked for 40 minutes
[01:33:43] About jerking off to a Kazaa clip of Bound
[01:33:45] Right
[01:33:46] And would anyone have enjoyed that
[01:33:48] Yeah probably
[01:33:49] But also here's the thing
[01:33:50] You don't want none of that
[01:33:51] No you would need a little bit
[01:33:52] But there's gotta be
[01:33:53] You know it's a rubber band
[01:33:54] There's the push and pull
[01:33:55] That's the dynamic
[01:33:56] It's salt and vinegar
[01:33:57] On a potato show
[01:33:58] I don't know what
[01:33:59] You got a poet laureate on your side
[01:34:02] Well yeah I mean that's the secret sauce
[01:34:04] You look at reviews now
[01:34:05] I would say like 75% of our reviews
[01:34:08] Now single out Ben as
[01:34:09] Oh yeah
[01:34:10] The elements of their show
[01:34:11] The black dark side
[01:34:12] Spelled like the DC villain dark side
[01:34:15] Okay
[01:34:16] Gave said Griffin David are not the heroes
[01:34:18] Podcasting deserves
[01:34:19] Agreed
[01:34:20] Agreed
[01:34:21] We are not
[01:34:22] And then Ben of course is a revelation
[01:34:24] That's the whole review
[01:34:25] I think that's the end of our episode
[01:34:27] I think that's all that
[01:34:28] You're a revelation Ben
[01:34:29] Anyway yeah it's very exciting
[01:34:30] New mini series
[01:34:33] We don't totally know what we're gonna do
[01:34:35] After this so if you want to
[01:34:37] Suggest stuff to us I suppose
[01:34:38] We will listen on you know
[01:34:40] We're at Blank Check Pod
[01:34:41] Yeah
[01:34:42] On Twa
[01:34:43] And G-Mail
[01:34:44] We've had some thoughts but yeah
[01:34:46] Nothing locked down so please you know
[01:34:48] Maybe we'll do a Twitter poll
[01:34:50] At some point with some of the candidates
[01:34:52] We're considering see what people want
[01:34:54] Yeah I mean we've talked about Cameron Crow
[01:34:57] Yup
[01:34:58] We've talked about James Cameron
[01:34:59] Uh huh
[01:35:00] We've talked about Christopher Nolan
[01:35:02] Yup
[01:35:03] What else have we talked about
[01:35:04] A couple other I'm forgetting
[01:35:05] Yeah
[01:35:06] Some good candidates out there
[01:35:08] Yeah yeah
[01:35:09] Yeah yeah
[01:35:10] We talked at one point about
[01:35:13] Doing specifically
[01:35:16] Post Oscar Spielberg
[01:35:18] Oh that's right that's a good one
[01:35:20] Yeah
[01:35:21] Spielberg after his 1993 success with
[01:35:24] Shiddler's Lesion
[01:35:25] His choices get really interesting after that
[01:35:27] Thank you
[01:35:28] A lot of good ideas
[01:35:30] A lot of fun
[01:35:31] Like yeah now what we do
[01:35:33] We're here to keep listening
[01:35:34] That's all you gotta do
[01:35:36] You just gotta listen
[01:35:37] So yeah so bound I hope we weren't too lame
[01:35:40] I don't know I think this is a good episode
[01:35:42] I think so too
[01:35:43] It's a great movie watch the movie
[01:35:44] You know
[01:35:45] Next week we're gonna talk about the matrax
[01:35:48] Yeah the lematrix
[01:35:50] Lematrix
[01:35:51] Yup
[01:35:52] Thank you for listening
[01:35:53] Yup and as always
[01:35:55] Well before that I just wanna say
[01:35:57] Big shout out to the hazz hogs
[01:35:59] David Dogg
[01:36:01] The Griffettes
[01:36:02] And the Blankets
[01:36:03] And our wonderful fans the Blankets
[01:36:05] Yes
[01:36:06] And as always
[01:36:07] Apologies for being shitty stupid bullshit
[01:36:10] Oh what
[01:36:11] I don't know
[01:36:12] I don't know
