In this week’s special episode, guest host Producer Ben has been given his own “Blank Check” for selecting a one-off film to review and he’s cashing it in with 1985’s cult comedy Fletch. Is this one of Chevy Chase’s strongest performances? What happened to actress Dana Wheeler-Nicholson? Out of all the movies ever made Ben picked Fletch? But why? Together, the trio discuss Chevy Chase’s tumultuous reputation and career, nostalgia for these types of comedies and character actors, Geena Davis’ impressive run of films in the late eighties to mid-nineties, and hating phonies. Plus, an in-depth hollywood history of the mythic Fletch reboot. And after this week’s palette cleanser episode Griffin and David will begin their next mini series with the films of Cameron Crowe!

[00:00:01] Blank Check with Griffin and David
[00:00:05] Blank Check with what to say or to expect
[00:00:13] All you need to know is that the name of the show is Blank Check
[00:00:20] Would you like anything, sir? We'll charge it to the Underhill's account
[00:00:23] Yes, I'll have a Bloody Mary and a Steak Sandwich and a podcast
[00:00:28] Oh, that was great!
[00:00:29] That was so good
[00:00:30] Oh my God
[00:00:31] Hey guys, welcome to Blank Check with Griffin and David
[00:00:35] This is a podcast where we...
[00:00:39] Keep going, baby!
[00:00:40] We take directors films and we watch them from start to finish
[00:00:44] You got this, baby boy
[00:00:45] And you know, we usually try to zero in on...
[00:00:48] And where around in their filmography they started becoming a Blank Check director
[00:00:53] So here on the podcast you have of course your guest host
[00:01:00] This is producer Ben
[00:01:02] And as always we have the two regular hosts
[00:01:06] We have David Sims
[00:01:07] Yeah, hi, hi
[00:01:08] And we have Griffin Newman
[00:01:10] He's gesturing
[00:01:11] The hashtag the two friends
[00:01:13] The hashtag the two friends
[00:01:14] Nailed it
[00:01:15] Boom
[00:01:16] And so yeah, we're gonna be discussing the 1985 comedy film starring one Chevy Chase called Fletch
[00:01:26] That's right, because this is Ben's choice
[00:01:29] Now Ben, as you said, this podcast usually is about Blank Checks when filmmakers have the success to then have a Blank Check to make whatever they want
[00:01:36] Today you're cashing in your Blank Check
[00:01:38] That's true
[00:01:39] We gave you a Blank Check to host the podcast today and pick any movie you wanted
[00:01:43] Since you so often have to deal with movies you hate
[00:01:46] Right
[00:01:47] And this is your cashing in
[00:01:48] This is one of my favorite films, which is totally ridiculous
[00:01:53] But I grew up watching this on VHS like I've seen it a million times
[00:01:58] I like Chevy Chase movies
[00:02:00] Okay
[00:02:01] Not gonna apologize
[00:02:02] No, no, no need to apologize
[00:02:03] No apology necessary
[00:02:04] I'll say this, I had to
[00:02:05] So like seems like old times?
[00:02:07] Is that a Chevy Chase?
[00:02:08] I'm trying to think of obscure Chevy Chase movies
[00:02:10] Were we talking like Fletch, Vacation, Three Amigos, like the sort of the big ones
[00:02:15] What's the Robbersons?
[00:02:16] Oh, cops with Robbersons
[00:02:17] Cops with Robbersons
[00:02:18] Love that one
[00:02:19] We've fucking Jack Palance
[00:02:20] Yes
[00:02:21] Wow, I've never seen that movie
[00:02:22] Which I believe was also directed by Michael Richie
[00:02:23] Yeah, it's a Michael Richie joint
[00:02:24] The same team
[00:02:25] Yeah
[00:02:26] I think Michael Richie was a director who could handle
[00:02:30] I think he was one of the few
[00:02:31] Yeah
[00:02:32] Yeah, cause you know like John, no not John Hughes
[00:02:35] Chris Columbus was the original director of Christmas Vacation
[00:02:38] And it was a big deal that like John Hughes had sort of like mentored Chris Columbus
[00:02:43] And gave him like a shot he's like I'm doing your favor
[00:02:46] Vacation three
[00:02:48] Like here's the third vacation where you get to direct it
[00:02:50] Chris Columbus did one week on vacation and was like John I'm sorry I can't do this
[00:02:54] I can't deal with Chevy
[00:02:56] Oh boy
[00:02:57] What is it about his reputation?
[00:02:59] Like what is it that
[00:03:01] He doesn't respect anyone
[00:03:02] He's completely egotistical
[00:03:04] He won't take direction
[00:03:06] You know, Chevy Chase is like the worst reputation in Hollywood right?
[00:03:09] Yeah, he's known for being incredibly difficult
[00:03:12] It's funny cause Amy Heckerling directed a European vacation right
[00:03:15] Which he said was the biggest mistake of her entire career
[00:03:17] Right
[00:03:21] Like the thing
[00:03:23] Yeah, here's what Chevy Chase's reputation is as like a person okay
[00:03:28] It's like Fletch if he wasn't funny
[00:03:30] Okay
[00:03:31] If he had that much contempt for everyone around him
[00:03:33] Sure
[00:03:34] But he wasn't charming
[00:03:35] Right
[00:03:36] So it's like when he's on camera he does the same thing but it's kind of like amusing and the audience is on his side
[00:03:41] But what if Fletch was just like a piece of shit
[00:03:45] And he wasn't landing the jokes
[00:03:48] And he kept on explaining to you why he was funny
[00:03:51] He's gonna sue us
[00:03:53] Yeah fine, uh Chevy if you're listening you wanna be a guest on the show
[00:03:56] You can be on our Fletch Lives episode
[00:03:59] Yeah and Chevy I love your stuff man
[00:04:01] I got nothing against you
[00:04:03] Okay alright so let's back up here
[00:04:05] Okay so yeah we talked about this last week but
[00:04:08] We presented this idea to Ben
[00:04:11] Ben's choice
[00:04:12] What's the movie you'd want to discuss the most
[00:04:15] And just right out of the gun he just fired Fletch
[00:04:19] One word answer within 30 seconds
[00:04:21] So just to dig in Ben, Ben you're from New Jersey right
[00:04:24] I am
[00:04:25] From New Jersey
[00:04:26] And this was a film you owned on VHS
[00:04:29] Yeah
[00:04:30] I will say alright like I'm not that big of a film buff
[00:04:35] Okay
[00:04:36] Comparatively to you guys
[00:04:37] Sure whatever
[00:04:38] You are our finest film critic but sure I understand
[00:04:40] You know I'm the every man's film critic
[00:04:43] But I'll say that like growing up I had some pretty trashy friends
[00:04:47] A lot of the movies we enjoyed are pretty like you know
[00:04:51] They're bad action movies, they're bad comedies
[00:04:54] Sure whatever
[00:04:55] I have this weird soft spot for those kinds of like
[00:04:57] Films
[00:04:58] I think we've all got those
[00:05:00] Sure Griffin has those I definitely have those
[00:05:02] What was it you kind of just grew up watching for some reason or another
[00:05:05] Right
[00:05:06] Just literally like I owned Clear and Present Danger on VHS
[00:05:09] For some reason like I don't know why
[00:05:11] It was like five bucks at a store
[00:05:13] Under each two is like one of my faves
[00:05:15] Yeah I've seen that movie a lot of times
[00:05:17] I don't it's not that good
[00:05:18] It's not terrible
[00:05:19] I've seen the Harlan Williams motion picture
[00:05:21] Rocket Man probably like sixty times
[00:05:23] I have never seen that film
[00:05:25] I mean if you ask me I think it's a masterpiece
[00:05:27] I can't watch it objectively
[00:05:29] This is the thing if you watch a movie enough
[00:05:31] Yeah
[00:05:32] It becomes impossible to criticize because it's like
[00:05:34] Why didn't they do this differently or just like
[00:05:36] What do you mean like
[00:05:37] That's Rocket Man it's iconic
[00:05:38] That's what happens in the movie
[00:05:39] That's what happens in the Rocket Man
[00:05:40] He farts in the suit and the two suits are tethered together
[00:05:43] How did you see that like fifty times
[00:05:44] You know why because my mom would take me to all these like
[00:05:47] Stupid comedies and she hated them all
[00:05:48] Sure
[00:05:49] Rocket Man was the only one that she found funny
[00:05:51] That's really funny
[00:05:52] So it was like this big bonding thing with my mom
[00:05:54] Where we like watch Rocket Man together all the time
[00:05:56] And then she was like we got to show James
[00:05:58] So when it came out in a video we watched it with my brother
[00:06:00] And then when my sister was born
[00:06:01] We would say like when do you think Romley is going to be old enough to watch Rocket Man
[00:06:04] Tradition
[00:06:05] You know it's like my mom hates dog farts
[00:06:07] Every family has these
[00:06:08] Like my friends the movie was Clifford
[00:06:10] You know that movie
[00:06:11] Yeah
[00:06:12] My former roommate Andy
[00:06:13] His whole family was obsessed with Clifford
[00:06:15] Their dog was called Clifford
[00:06:16] And it's just because they owned it on VHS
[00:06:19] For some reason I don't know
[00:06:20] So okay I'll say that
[00:06:22] Here are a couple questions I have for you Ben
[00:06:24] Okay
[00:06:25] Yeah
[00:06:26] And I know you feel like you're very on the defensive
[00:06:27] You got to sell us on this movie
[00:06:28] Yeah this is the thing we like the movie
[00:06:29] And we positioned it as
[00:06:30] You have to sell us on it being great
[00:06:32] Which I know made it sound a little more antagonistic
[00:06:33] I said I'd seen it once before
[00:06:34] And I thought it was okay
[00:06:35] David hadn't seen it before
[00:06:36] David watched it
[00:06:37] Liked it a lot right
[00:06:39] I realized the one time I'd seen it before
[00:06:41] Was maybe like seven years ago
[00:06:45] And I like as I was watching this
[00:06:47] Was trying to place myself in when I watched it
[00:06:49] I was in a real bad place in my life
[00:06:51] Oh no
[00:06:52] I was like I was going through
[00:06:54] I was going through some shit
[00:06:56] No it must have been six years ago
[00:06:58] Because I had just
[00:06:59] I had just hit legal drinking age
[00:07:03] And I remember I had like earlier that week
[00:07:06] Been hit with some bad shit
[00:07:08] And immediately was like
[00:07:09] Oh I'm allowed to drink legally
[00:07:11] And went out across the street
[00:07:13] To the grocery store
[00:07:14] And bought like two 24 cases of Takate
[00:07:18] And went back to my apartment
[00:07:19] And didn't leave for like five days
[00:07:20] Right
[00:07:21] Wasn't doing well right
[00:07:23] And Sophie Fader
[00:07:25] My best friend who I've called out a lot
[00:07:27] In the podcast
[00:07:28] Shout out a lot
[00:07:29] She came over to my place
[00:07:32] To try to like get me out of the house
[00:07:34] And when she came over I was watching Fletch
[00:07:36] And she's like you got to get out of here
[00:07:38] And I was like
[00:07:39] And then we went out
[00:07:40] And we like
[00:07:41] So it was kind of a tossed off
[00:07:43] Yeah and I was like
[00:07:45] It's fine but I also was like
[00:07:47] You know I was hanging by a thread
[00:07:49] Alright
[00:07:50] So I watched it a second time
[00:07:51] With clearer eyes
[00:07:52] With a better head on my shoulders
[00:07:54] And not only did I like it more
[00:07:56] But I also think there's something to
[00:07:58] This is the kind of movie
[00:07:59] That's maybe designed to be
[00:08:00] Watched 80 times on VHS
[00:08:02] Yes
[00:08:03] Like it definitely got better the second time
[00:08:05] I could imagine myself watching it
[00:08:07] In a tenth time
[00:08:08] Like it's just like
[00:08:09] Movies like this that have
[00:08:10] Wow repeat viewings
[00:08:11] Movies like this that have kind of a
[00:08:13] Convoluted plot
[00:08:15] That the first time you feel like
[00:08:16] You have to pay a lot of attention to
[00:08:18] Often play better on repeat viewings
[00:08:20] Because then you know what the plot is
[00:08:21] And you can just enjoy all the repartee
[00:08:24] You can enjoy the chemistry
[00:08:25] You can enjoy the weird little lines
[00:08:27] And that's the thing
[00:08:28] The Chevy Ad Libs
[00:08:29] The legendary Ad Libs
[00:08:30] This movie
[00:08:31] I don't want to say joke dance
[00:08:32] But this movie is so gag dance
[00:08:33] Because you go like
[00:08:34] Okay in each scene Chevy's doing
[00:08:36] This three weird physical like
[00:08:37] Pratfall hitting his head things right
[00:08:39] That are clearly Ad Libs
[00:08:40] Adding in the names
[00:08:41] The actual jokes
[00:08:42] The like one off sort of under things
[00:08:44] The things that are just funny line
[00:08:46] Readings
[00:08:47] The reaction shot you know it's like
[00:08:49] What you said what do you like about this movie
[00:08:51] In the last episode when you're setting it up
[00:08:52] Is you like this movie just like goes for
[00:08:54] Like it doesn't care it just keeps on
[00:08:56] Throwing stuff at the screen
[00:08:57] And it is dense in that way
[00:08:58] Where like the more times you've seen it
[00:09:00] You kind of like it
[00:09:02] You know everything that's coming
[00:09:04] You know you're able to appreciate each moment more
[00:09:06] Because most comedies are like build up to a big laugh
[00:09:08] Let you rest for a little
[00:09:10] Build up to another laugh
[00:09:11] This isn't like that at all
[00:09:12] No and it's all true
[00:09:13] It's just sort of a nice consistent like sort of hum
[00:09:16] You know like
[00:09:17] But it's a Vibey movie too
[00:09:18] Oh very Vibey
[00:09:19] It's also so much like just kind of a hang out movie
[00:09:21] Hanging out with this bum fledge
[00:09:22] And I was just talking a
[00:09:24] Griffin about this
[00:09:25] Yeah
[00:09:26] You know it's just I think also we're just nostalgic
[00:09:28] For this sort of movie
[00:09:29] Because Hollywood doesn't make enough for these movies anymore
[00:09:31] These kinds of movies where it's like
[00:09:32] You're making a Hollywood comedy now
[00:09:34] It has to be high concept
[00:09:36] Lots of nutty jokes
[00:09:37] Or big crazy set pieces
[00:09:39] You know really really really really silly
[00:09:42] This is not like
[00:09:43] But here's the interesting thing about Fletch
[00:09:45] Okay
[00:09:46] Well yeah and the like the Fletch
[00:09:49] Disguise thing right
[00:09:50] Which like alternates between like
[00:09:52] Which from the advertising I think they were like
[00:09:54] Really selling it
[00:09:55] I mean the tagline
[00:09:57] I hate the tagline
[00:09:58] Do you know the tagline
[00:09:59] No I don't
[00:10:00] Meet the only guy who changes his identity more often
[00:10:03] Than he changes his underwear
[00:10:05] Yeah that's maybe the worst tagline
[00:10:07] I don't want to think about Chevy Chase changing his underwear
[00:10:09] Yeah also what I want to think about is
[00:10:11] Chevy Chase's gooch
[00:10:13] Being unwashed
[00:10:15] Trust me it's the same pair
[00:10:17] Yeah and also the poster is him like holding up his wallet
[00:10:20] And like the 17 photos
[00:10:22] And they're all just different versions of him
[00:10:24] Some of them it's just him walking in
[00:10:26] And giving a false name
[00:10:27] And some of them he's like
[00:10:28] Got a fucking thing on and he's doing a voice right
[00:10:31] A little bit but most of them is just like he put on a sweat
[00:10:34] Agreed and the couple that are like sillier
[00:10:36] Feel like Chevy pushing you know
[00:10:38] Sure well when he's got the false teeth
[00:10:40] That's him pushing
[00:10:41] I'm not pushing like it doesn't work
[00:10:42] But like he was like can you please let me do the carry
[00:10:44] It would be a little sillier
[00:10:45] It feels like him saying to Richie
[00:10:46] Like let me go a little bigger on this one
[00:10:48] And I feel like when you're talking about
[00:10:49] That the movies of this ilk are a lot less
[00:10:51] Ground in reality right now are a lot sillier
[00:10:53] I feel like in a way
[00:10:55] Fletch is like emblematic of everything
[00:10:57] That was good about these types of films in this time period
[00:10:59] But also lit the fuse that fucked them up for the future
[00:11:03] Cause you look at something like Blue Streak right
[00:11:06] Which is also like a crime comedy about every man
[00:11:09] The Martin Lawrence, the fine man cop picture
[00:11:11] Yes and Luke Wilson which is like kind of a messy movie right
[00:11:15] I mean there's so many 90s movies in that
[00:11:17] Yeah but I'm throwing out Blue Streak as an example
[00:11:19] Cause it's like you go if that premise
[00:11:21] In my early 80s where it's like a criminal
[00:11:23] Pretend to be a cop it probably would have been directed
[00:11:25] By like Walter Hill you know
[00:11:28] And like all the supporting characters would have been played
[00:11:30] Like really straight and the guy would have been
[00:11:33] Like an alcoholic you know they would have
[00:11:35] Like it would have had a moody Howard Faltemeyer score
[00:11:37] But instead in Blue Streak it's got all these scenes
[00:11:39] Where like Martin Lawrence dresses up as a character
[00:11:41] To go undercover and he's like playing it to the 9s
[00:11:44] Like he's doing like an all that character you know
[00:11:47] No he'd been in Bad Boys though
[00:11:48] Let's not forget that he'd been in Bad Boys
[00:11:50] Right which I'm saying is grounded
[00:11:52] But like Blue Streak is like big
[00:11:53] And he's wearing the funny teeth and whatever
[00:11:55] Why are we talking about Blue Streak?
[00:11:56] Because I'm saying that Fletch does that a couple times
[00:11:59] But it does it in a pretty like contained way
[00:12:02] I agree
[00:12:03] And I think people were like oh that's fun
[00:12:04] If you have a comedy guy and he could do a bunch of characters
[00:12:06] And stuff like that
[00:12:07] And it started to like make the movies down the line
[00:12:11] Bit by bit sillier and sillier
[00:12:13] Where like I can't remember the last time
[00:12:14] I mean like nice guys is the last like kind of
[00:12:17] Crime comedy
[00:12:19] That feels grounded in like a reality
[00:12:22] And like a sadness
[00:12:23] The reason I really want to do Martin Breast someday
[00:12:25] Is you got Midnight Run and Beverly Hills Cop
[00:12:27] Which are like the platonic ideal of this kind of film
[00:12:31] You know
[00:12:32] Beverly Hills Cop and Fletch are the same soundtrack
[00:12:34] Yes they're very very similar movies
[00:12:36] Um I like Fletch a lot he's a good guy
[00:12:40] I like this movie
[00:12:42] Okay so here I have some more questions for you
[00:12:44] Did your family like Fletch
[00:12:47] Like it was just a movie with your friends
[00:12:48] Or were you like a Chevy family
[00:12:51] We were not a Chevy family
[00:12:53] Interesting
[00:12:54] My dad is so stubborn with comedy
[00:12:57] He like he really like hates Chevy
[00:13:00] Really?
[00:13:01] Yeah he's pretty hateable
[00:13:02] Okay because my dad did too and I was definitely raised in a household that was like Chevy sucks
[00:13:06] Bill Murray's great Chevy sucks
[00:13:08] Oh weird my dad thought Chevy tastes like genius
[00:13:10] But not so much with the movies just SNF
[00:13:12] Like he was like that's the greatest thing that ever happened
[00:13:15] Even when I got into it
[00:13:16] He would talk about his update all the time
[00:13:18] See what I
[00:13:19] All the time
[00:13:20] I was like 70's SNL and I was like 10
[00:13:22] And I was watching the old VHS as my dad was like
[00:13:24] Ah Chevy
[00:13:25] Ugh
[00:13:26] Such an asshole
[00:13:27] You know like
[00:13:28] It was always like Murray
[00:13:30] Acroyd
[00:13:31] Belushi
[00:13:32] And then Chevy it was like don't fucking get into the Chevy stuff
[00:13:34] Chevy is the best though I think Chevy
[00:13:36] I like Chevy now
[00:13:37] He's fascinating
[00:13:38] Can we talk about Chevy's career?
[00:13:40] I want to ask some more Ben questions
[00:13:42] Alright alright
[00:13:43] Okay so your dad didn't like Chevy
[00:13:44] Who did your dad like comedically
[00:13:46] Um he loved Mel Brooks
[00:13:48] Okay
[00:13:49] Um Albert Brooks
[00:13:51] The Brooks
[00:13:52] Good call
[00:13:53] There's some movies he's been on me
[00:13:55] Yeah loves Brooks Williams work
[00:13:57] Uh no he's been on me
[00:13:59] Five comedy plays
[00:14:00] What a throw mama from the train
[00:14:02] Is a movie my dad loves
[00:14:04] So he likes the cinema
[00:14:06] The dark 80's black comedies of like DeVito
[00:14:08] You know you know
[00:14:09] Yeah he likes the cinema of DeVito okay
[00:14:11] Hey we should do DeVito sometime
[00:14:12] DeVito is a fascinating film career
[00:14:14] Yes
[00:14:15] As a director they're insane
[00:14:17] I'm blanking now but um
[00:14:19] Yeah like you're kind of your classic
[00:14:21] Like uh 70's and 80's
[00:14:24] Like comedies I would say
[00:14:26] Like um fuck there's the one
[00:14:29] Um I can't remember let's just keep going
[00:14:31] Okay and Fletch for you it was a
[00:14:33] A buddy movie it was a friend movie
[00:14:35] Uh it was like a hangout movie for you
[00:14:37] You'd watch it together with your buddies
[00:14:38] I would with my one buddy Garrett
[00:14:40] But I also
[00:14:41] You'd watch it alone or
[00:14:42] I would just watch it at night
[00:14:43] Garrett Morris right
[00:14:45] Yeah from SNL yeah and he would say
[00:14:47] Man Chevy was such an asshole
[00:14:49] You'd say man I'm just gonna lay low
[00:14:52] Gonna lay low for 30 years
[00:14:54] Bam two broke girls that's what you would say
[00:14:56] I'm back
[00:14:57] His episode of WTF is unbelievable
[00:15:00] I should listen to it
[00:15:01] It's unbelievable
[00:15:03] His life story is incredible
[00:15:05] Um okay so you watch it with Garrett like a lot
[00:15:07] He's saying he mostly watches it alone
[00:15:09] That's why I was sensing
[00:15:11] Which I think is true for us
[00:15:13] Yeah probably yeah
[00:15:14] The comedy movies you really love
[00:15:15] You watch him alone over and over
[00:15:17] I found him
[00:15:18] My dad's been on me to watch Where's Papa
[00:15:20] Okay that's a great movie
[00:15:22] And then Alice doesn't live here anymore
[00:15:24] Those are like two of his favorite comedies
[00:15:26] Alice doesn't live here anymore it's very sad
[00:15:28] Yeah that's a pretty melancholy comedy
[00:15:30] That's a Scorsese
[00:15:31] That's one of an early Scorsese drama
[00:15:33] A dramedy yeah
[00:15:34] It's really good though
[00:15:35] I've never seen Where's Papa
[00:15:36] That's a Carl Reiner movie right
[00:15:38] Yeah with uh uh Ruth Gordon and George Segal
[00:15:40] Uh the greats
[00:15:41] And Ron Liebman don't sleep on Ron Liebman
[00:15:44] This is my last sort of like prelude question
[00:15:46] Cause I'm just trying to lay the
[00:15:48] Set out the landscape right
[00:15:49] Okay um where do you stand on Fletch lives
[00:15:52] Oh it's awful
[00:15:54] It looks I've never seen it
[00:15:56] But I was just clicking around and looking at
[00:15:58] It looks terrible
[00:15:59] I've never seen it but I just know that's the company line
[00:16:01] Ooh it's weird
[00:16:03] It's such a like
[00:16:04] He's not like really a reporter detective anymore
[00:16:07] And it leans hard into the characters thing
[00:16:09] Right into him doing the impression
[00:16:11] Maybe Chevy took over that movie a little bit
[00:16:13] Even though Richie directed that one too
[00:16:15] Yeah I would say he doesn't actually get to play as much
[00:16:19] Uh different characters as I feel like
[00:16:21] The cast are playing really big characters
[00:16:24] Big Southern characters
[00:16:26] It's got like
[00:16:27] Really over the top
[00:16:28] It's got like Arley Ernie in it
[00:16:30] And Al Holbrook it's got all these like
[00:16:32] Cleavon littles in it
[00:16:33] See that's the thing
[00:16:34] That's like the big factor that separates
[00:16:36] These types of movies from the 80s
[00:16:37] And these types of movies now
[00:16:39] Is you look at Beverly Hills Cop
[00:16:41] And like everyone else in that movie is playing a drama
[00:16:43] And that's what makes it so fun
[00:16:45] Same with 48 hours
[00:16:46] Right 48 hours is the same way
[00:16:47] This is a great example of
[00:16:48] Midnight Run is the same way
[00:16:49] Like it's Yaffa Koto who's like genuinely scary
[00:16:51] Absolutely
[00:16:52] Is the cop chasing them you know
[00:16:53] And then Fletch that works
[00:16:55] That like everyone else is like a real fucking
[00:16:57] Human being
[00:16:58] Yeah
[00:16:59] So yeah cause I'm watching this
[00:17:01] For the second time I was like
[00:17:02] How did they not make 10 of these
[00:17:04] And it is just that Fletch's lives
[00:17:06] Killed it so hard that they just like
[00:17:08] Well just Chevy's career just sort of
[00:17:10] Flamed out as well
[00:17:12] But I think it was also people hated Fletch's lives
[00:17:14] That makes sense
[00:17:15] I think it was those two things in parallel
[00:17:17] I mean we're gonna talk about the box office
[00:17:19] Because you guys gave me a juicy mid 80s movie
[00:17:21] So I'm real excited talking about the box office
[00:17:23] In the mid 80s
[00:17:24] Oh boy
[00:17:25] But you know it wasn't like a huge hit
[00:17:27] I think it was like one of those nice like sort of
[00:17:29] Did fine
[00:17:30] Got a lot of cult following
[00:17:31] You know like you know sort of a good underground
[00:17:33] And the sequel came like four or five years later
[00:17:35] I mean I think it did like 50
[00:17:38] Which today would be like 90
[00:17:40] You know 80 or 90
[00:17:41] That's like a solid showing
[00:17:43] And it probably did crazy fucking well on
[00:17:45] Video and on like HBO and stuff
[00:17:47] I mean this was the first generation of movies that like
[00:17:49] The second run on HBO was
[00:17:51] A year or two after it came out in theaters
[00:17:53] And that replay could really build up
[00:17:55] Like a cult for a movie
[00:17:57] Okay so let's talk about Chevy's career a little bit
[00:17:59] Cause I know this movie was kind of
[00:18:01] His comeback after like
[00:18:04] The back pain pill shit
[00:18:06] Well this is the thing
[00:18:07] Yeah
[00:18:08] His career was weird
[00:18:10] Cause you know obviously he breaks out on SNL
[00:18:12] In 70 what
[00:18:14] 5, 6, 7, 5, 7, 6
[00:18:16] 75, 76
[00:18:17] He's gone at the end of the first season
[00:18:18] He's gone in 1976
[00:18:20] He doesn't have a hit movie until Caddyshack
[00:18:22] Which is 1980
[00:18:23] So he's kind of just
[00:18:25] Around
[00:18:26] What about I thought the Neil Simon one
[00:18:28] Seems like Old Times did okay
[00:18:30] Seems like Old Times is also 1980
[00:18:32] Oh really?
[00:18:33] What does he do between
[00:18:34] He makes like
[00:18:35] A movie called Tunnel Vision
[00:18:37] Which I've never heard of
[00:18:38] I don't think that's even a movie
[00:18:40] That's like a weird anthology film
[00:18:41] He makes a movie called Foul Play
[00:18:43] Which he gets like a
[00:18:44] That's like a decent hit with Goldie Mohn
[00:18:46] Yeah, he did decently
[00:18:47] And he makes a movie called Old Heavenly Dog
[00:18:51] Which is a Benji sequel
[00:18:52] Where Chevy Chase is reincarnated as Benji
[00:18:55] I'm sorry it's not a Benji sequel
[00:18:57] It's a movie starring Benji
[00:18:59] It's not part of the Benji chronology
[00:19:02] It's billed as Chevy Chase and Benji
[00:19:04] The big selling point was it was the dog from Benji
[00:19:07] And Chevy Chase gets reincarnated as that dog
[00:19:10] And it's like his voice
[00:19:11] Is that in London?
[00:19:12] Yes
[00:19:13] Anyway
[00:19:14] It's Cherry Chase doing voiceover for Benji
[00:19:15] Playing a different dog in London
[00:19:17] But then he has Caddyshack
[00:19:19] Which is like a big hit
[00:19:21] And like only grows
[00:19:23] Like after it's like a big hit on release
[00:19:26] And then even bigger and bigger
[00:19:27] The more you think about it or whatever
[00:19:29] You know another interesting stat
[00:19:30] Is that he was the original choice to play
[00:19:34] Why am I freaking the character now
[00:19:36] But it's Richard Matheson's character in Animal House
[00:19:39] You mean Tim Matheson's character
[00:19:41] Tim Matheson's character, yes
[00:19:42] I'm sorry
[00:19:43] The villain
[00:19:44] No he's not the villain
[00:19:45] He's sort of the main like super slick
[00:19:47] He's the straight man
[00:19:48] Yeah
[00:19:49] It's not Otter, it's the other one
[00:19:50] Yeah
[00:19:51] Peter Rieger's Otter
[00:19:52] I don't know
[00:19:53] Anyway, the original plan was that
[00:19:54] Animal House was going to be all SNL
[00:19:56] And it's going to be like Acroyd was D-Day
[00:19:58] That was Chevy's character
[00:20:00] And then Belushi
[00:20:01] And I think Murray was maybe going to play Otter
[00:20:04] And then they were like
[00:20:06] We don't want it to seem like an SNL movie
[00:20:08] So I pushed the other guys out
[00:20:10] But yeah, okay, so Eddie
[00:20:11] Caddyshack
[00:20:12] Big he's got seems like old times that year
[00:20:14] And then again he's kind of messing around
[00:20:16] He makes under the rainbow
[00:20:18] Which is like a weird
[00:20:20] I don't know
[00:20:21] It's about behind the scenes of Wizard of Oz
[00:20:24] It's a murder mystery
[00:20:26] With him and Carrie Fisher
[00:20:27] And they're investigating the murder of a munchkin
[00:20:30] He makes a movie called Modern Problems
[00:20:32] That I think kind of goes nowhere
[00:20:34] And then in 83 he's got Vacation
[00:20:36] So it's like okay, you're back
[00:20:37] Alright, here we go Chevy
[00:20:38] Like you're going to be a big star
[00:20:41] And then couple years and then flesh
[00:20:44] We'll probably right there in that early 80s
[00:20:47] Okay, we're in that sweet spot
[00:20:49] But I know right before Fletch
[00:20:51] Is he has a back injury
[00:20:53] And then he gets addicted to back pain pills
[00:20:56] And that's like the big one that's kind of public
[00:20:59] Where then he goes into rehab
[00:21:00] And it becomes like a public story
[00:21:03] That Chevy has a problem
[00:21:05] You know, like the coke thing was just sort of like
[00:21:07] Oh, he's clearly like he's in the thing
[00:21:09] The back pain thing was like this guy's watched up
[00:21:11] Like he's a fucking mess
[00:21:12] And at that point his reputation was starting
[00:21:14] To like catch up with him, you know
[00:21:16] So I know part of Fletch
[00:21:18] And I think why Fletch is so good
[00:21:19] Is that like Michael Richie
[00:21:21] Kind of had something on him
[00:21:23] Because he was like you got to prove yourself now
[00:21:26] Right
[00:21:27] You know
[00:21:28] Let me see what, I feel like I read something about this
[00:21:32] Yeah, so you know this is based on a book
[00:21:34] Have you ever read the book?
[00:21:35] I've not read the book
[00:21:36] There are 11 books
[00:21:38] By Gregory McDonald
[00:21:39] Oh, that's cool
[00:21:40] There's a full Fletch series
[00:21:41] Which is why everyone thought it was going to be
[00:21:43] Like a bunch of movies
[00:21:45] I did not know this
[00:21:46] Fletch, confess Fletch
[00:21:47] Fletch is fortune
[00:21:48] Fletch is moxie
[00:21:49] Fletch in the man who
[00:21:50] Fletch is in
[00:21:51] Fletch won
[00:21:52] Fletch 2
[00:21:53] Like it on and on and on and on
[00:21:54] Fletch won is
[00:21:55] It's a prequel
[00:21:56] Yeah, but it's also spelled W-O-N
[00:21:58] It's about his first story
[00:22:01] But also it's how he won
[00:22:04] He won the story
[00:22:06] So some ideas were thrown at this author
[00:22:11] Burt Reynolds
[00:22:12] He said no
[00:22:13] Mick Jagger
[00:22:14] He said no
[00:22:15] Chevy Chase is throwing at him
[00:22:16] And he's like alright
[00:22:17] Maybe Chevy Chase
[00:22:18] I don't mind that
[00:22:19] Chevy Chase for some reason was not interested
[00:22:22] And then I guess maybe he
[00:22:25] Needed
[00:22:26] Yeah, it was leaned on a little bit
[00:22:27] Like alright, you need to
[00:22:28] Exactly
[00:22:29] So at this point
[00:22:30] I'm sorry
[00:22:31] European vacation has come out at this point?
[00:22:35] No, European vacation comes out the same year as Fletch
[00:22:38] A little later in the year
[00:22:39] Oh, interesting
[00:22:40] Okay
[00:22:41] So 85 is a big
[00:22:42] Because also spies like us comes out in 85
[00:22:44] So 85 is Chevy Chase owning
[00:22:46] And then three amigos is 86
[00:22:48] Okay, that was my next question
[00:22:49] Okay, yeah
[00:22:50] Fascinating
[00:22:53] And Michael Richie
[00:22:54] Let's talk about his career a little
[00:22:55] Because he has like
[00:22:56] He's one of these sort of like
[00:22:57] Under Harold the 70s directors
[00:22:59] Who has like a super fucking diverse filmography
[00:23:02] Yeah, I mean he's made some famous movies
[00:23:05] Like The Candidate and Bad News Bears
[00:23:07] But then he's also made like
[00:23:09] A dozen movies I've never heard of
[00:23:11] Smile is like the movie of his
[00:23:13] That's kind of like a quiet masterpiece
[00:23:15] Which is a satire of like
[00:23:19] Beauty pageants and stuff
[00:23:20] It's really really good
[00:23:21] And then
[00:23:22] The Prime Cut
[00:23:23] Right, the Lee Marvin action movie
[00:23:25] That sounds great
[00:23:26] Yeah, it's fucking awesome
[00:23:27] That movie rules
[00:23:28] I mean there's so many
[00:23:29] I mean I know The Golden Child
[00:23:31] Which is that Eddie Murphy movie from the 80s
[00:23:33] Which is okay
[00:23:34] I saw it on TV
[00:23:35] It's okay
[00:23:36] I don't remember it
[00:23:37] I don't remember it really at all either
[00:23:39] Yeah, Prime Cut looks good
[00:23:40] Gene Hackman's in that
[00:23:41] Yeah, and Sassy Space
[00:23:42] Damn, that looks fun
[00:23:43] Yeah, it's fucking it rules
[00:23:45] In the 90s, you know
[00:23:46] He starts to go south
[00:23:48] You know he makes
[00:23:49] He makes Cops and Robertsons
[00:23:51] He makes The Scout
[00:23:52] Which is like an okay Albert Brooks movie
[00:23:54] About baseball with Brendon Frazier
[00:23:56] I think I saw that
[00:23:57] Yeah, I've seen it
[00:23:59] He made A Simple Wish
[00:24:00] Which I think is like a really
[00:24:01] Treakly Mara Wilson picture
[00:24:03] With Martin Short
[00:24:04] And who's the other person
[00:24:06] Above the title on that movie
[00:24:08] There's three after
[00:24:09] Kathleen Turner
[00:24:10] Thank you, that's who it is
[00:24:11] Yes
[00:24:12] So you know he just
[00:24:13] I feel like he was like
[00:24:14] He was very much like a Hollywood
[00:24:16] Workman-like guy
[00:24:17] Who would just get like
[00:24:18] Put on pictures, right?
[00:24:19] But he kind of
[00:24:20] He had a voice
[00:24:21] And he had
[00:24:22] Yeah, that's sort of gritty
[00:24:23] He had a sensibility
[00:24:24] He was really good with actors
[00:24:25] I mean a lot of these guys
[00:24:26] Sort of these 70s guys
[00:24:27] Kind of lost it
[00:24:28] When they got to the 90s
[00:24:29] You know
[00:24:30] I mean even look at
[00:24:31] What's his name
[00:24:32] Ed Brast
[00:24:33] Look at Martin Brast
[00:24:34] Look at Brast
[00:24:35] But also
[00:24:36] I won't forget his name now
[00:24:37] Schlesinger
[00:24:38] John Schlesinger
[00:24:39] Yeah, you know
[00:24:40] I mean his last movie
[00:24:41] With Madonna and
[00:24:42] He's British
[00:24:43] She's British
[00:24:44] But he had
[00:24:45] No, I'm saying the 70s Hollywood guys
[00:24:46] The new Hollywood guys
[00:24:47] Yeah, yeah, the guys who came
[00:24:48] Oh, and he did the
[00:24:49] Fantastic movie too
[00:24:50] Michael Ritchie
[00:24:51] Yeah, I've never seen that
[00:24:53] Wildcats with Goldie Hawn
[00:24:55] Coaching the football team
[00:24:58] Semi-tough
[00:25:00] The Bert Reynolds football movie
[00:25:02] He did a couple football
[00:25:03] Divine Madness
[00:25:04] The Bette Midler concert film
[00:25:06] Weird filmography
[00:25:07] Okay, so that brings us to
[00:25:08] A motion picture
[00:25:09] Fletch
[00:25:10] Right
[00:25:12] Fletch
[00:25:13] So
[00:25:15] From that opening
[00:25:16] Song
[00:25:17] You know this is going to be good
[00:25:18] Right?
[00:25:19] Yes
[00:25:20] They get hit over the head
[00:25:21] With some 80s synth pop
[00:25:22] And you're like, alright
[00:25:23] Alright
[00:25:24] I believe it's called
[00:25:25] Bit by Bit
[00:25:26] But Stephanie Mills
[00:25:27] Is the name of the song
[00:25:28] Yeah
[00:25:29] Yeah, yeah, yeah
[00:25:30] Who is famous for playing
[00:25:31] Dorothy in The Wiz
[00:25:32] On Broadway
[00:25:33] Yes
[00:25:34] Oh
[00:25:35] This film
[00:25:36] A lot of disco hits
[00:25:38] This film has one of my favorite things
[00:25:40] That we can have
[00:25:41] Which is a song
[00:25:42] Where the lyrics of the song
[00:25:44] Reference the character
[00:25:45] On screen
[00:25:46] That you're watching
[00:25:47] At the moment the song is playing
[00:25:48] Yeah, they're literally telling you
[00:25:49] What Fletch is up to
[00:25:50] Yeah, I'll tell you what he's up to
[00:25:51] Fletch is working overtime
[00:25:55] But keep on telling you
[00:25:56] That he's working overtime
[00:25:57] Well, guess how else would you know
[00:25:58] You guys know
[00:25:59] Is he on the clock?
[00:26:00] Is he fucking on vacation?
[00:26:02] What's going on?
[00:26:03] No, he's putting in the time
[00:26:04] At the beach
[00:26:05] He's at the beach
[00:26:06] Yeah
[00:26:07] I'm Patrick Johnson, Lakers Jersey
[00:26:08] We're trying to fit in
[00:26:09] He's a junkie
[00:26:10] He's over it
[00:26:11] You know Fletch is an old movie
[00:26:13] Because he's an investigative reporter
[00:26:15] Who never files any stories
[00:26:17] Seems to have an unlimited budget
[00:26:18] To travel around the country
[00:26:19] And also buy like prosthetics
[00:26:21] Like get fucking Stan Winston
[00:26:23] To make noses for him
[00:26:24] He has like one editor
[00:26:26] To run things by
[00:26:27] It's not like the editor doesn't have
[00:26:28] To say like you're going to
[00:26:29] Utah because of no reason
[00:26:31] I have to calm the
[00:26:32] Expenses department
[00:26:34] No, he's just like what average
[00:26:35] You know my favorite detail
[00:26:36] In this movie is like
[00:26:37] Not only is he like
[00:26:39] An undercover reporter
[00:26:40] Right? Like not only is he
[00:26:41] Not telling the people
[00:26:42] He's talking to
[00:26:44] Who he is
[00:26:45] But he also files
[00:26:47] The stories anonymously
[00:26:48] Right
[00:26:49] He writes his column as Jane Doe
[00:26:51] Because you gotta keep a secret
[00:26:52] You know gotta keep a low profile
[00:26:54] Or else you'll get rumbled
[00:26:55] Right Ben?
[00:26:56] Yeah, that's the idea
[00:26:57] But I think there's like
[00:26:58] A thesis to this movie
[00:26:59] Which is like Fletch
[00:27:00] Hates bullshit
[00:27:03] Like it fucking hates it
[00:27:04] What drives Fletch
[00:27:05] Is he thinks everyone's a fucking phony
[00:27:07] Pretty much
[00:27:08] You know?
[00:27:09] And like the thing he hates the most
[00:27:11] Is entitlement
[00:27:12] Like Fletch is out to get people
[00:27:13] Who think they're better than others
[00:27:15] He also doesn't take a lot of things
[00:27:17] Seriously
[00:27:18] And I like that about him too
[00:27:19] Yeah, I like his style
[00:27:20] And we'll get to this
[00:27:21] But I think that's why the scene
[00:27:23] Where the cop is pointing the gun
[00:27:24] And just Richard on Baker's
[00:27:25] Really works because
[00:27:27] Chase is not a great actor
[00:27:29] He's a great comic actor
[00:27:30] This is the best dramatic performance
[00:27:31] Of his career
[00:27:32] Exactly, it is
[00:27:33] The way his face just kind of
[00:27:34] Very subtly shifts from his usual
[00:27:36] Like shit eating grin
[00:27:37] To just like
[00:27:38] Oh, this is terrible
[00:27:40] Like I might get shot
[00:27:41] I could die
[00:27:42] Is really good
[00:27:43] Yeah
[00:27:44] The drama is really present
[00:27:45] In a scene that most movies
[00:27:46] I feel like it wouldn't be at all
[00:27:47] You'd just know like
[00:27:48] Fletch is gonna be fine
[00:27:49] I think we're leading
[00:27:50] Jordan Baker being second billed
[00:27:51] By the way
[00:27:52] Baffling
[00:27:53] Yeah
[00:27:54] Baffling
[00:27:55] Can I sidebar for one second?
[00:27:56] I am baffled
[00:27:57] Can I sidebar for one second?
[00:27:58] He's in two scenes
[00:27:59] Yeah, go ahead
[00:28:00] I saw The Untouchables
[00:28:02] It was playing at the Metrograph
[00:28:03] You went here
[00:28:04] You've been seeing some Diplomas?
[00:28:05] Yeah, and I know you recently
[00:28:06] Watched all the Diplomas
[00:28:07] I recently watched every film
[00:28:08] Barring a couple
[00:28:10] By Brian Diploma
[00:28:11] Do you remember what the billing is
[00:28:13] On The Untouchables?
[00:28:14] No, go for it
[00:28:15] It's insane
[00:28:16] Are you ready for the billing
[00:28:17] On The Untouchables?
[00:28:18] Sure
[00:28:19] This billing happened in the one year
[00:28:20] Where this would have been
[00:28:21] The order for this film
[00:28:22] Okay
[00:28:23] Mm-hmm
[00:28:24] Kevin Costner
[00:28:25] Sure
[00:28:26] My old boss
[00:28:27] Right?
[00:28:28] First bill
[00:28:29] Second billed
[00:28:30] Charles Martin Smith
[00:28:31] Hmm
[00:28:32] Over Connery, Garcia and De Niro
[00:28:35] Yes
[00:28:36] The accountant guy
[00:28:37] Remember him with the glasses?
[00:28:38] Who's the first to die in the movie?
[00:28:40] Yeah
[00:28:41] Yeah, Charles Martin Smith
[00:28:42] Then Garcia
[00:28:44] With Sean Connery
[00:28:46] Mm-hmm
[00:28:47] And De Niro
[00:28:48] I think it's two widths
[00:28:49] I don't think they do an and
[00:28:51] I think they go with Sean Connery
[00:28:53] With Robert De Niro as
[00:28:56] Isn't that weird?
[00:28:58] That's very strange
[00:28:59] We're off top
[00:29:01] But that's the only time Charles Martin Smith
[00:29:03] Will be second billed in a movie
[00:29:05] It looks like it's with De Niro and Sean Connery
[00:29:07] Okay, I'm sorry about that
[00:29:08] As Joe Malone or whatever
[00:29:09] Yeah
[00:29:10] And then
[00:29:11] What's more called Patricia Clarkson
[00:29:13] Is not even credit, like billed
[00:29:15] Only the men
[00:29:16] Do you know what her character
[00:29:17] And she's an Academy Award nominee
[00:29:19] Charles Martin Smith is the only one of that cast
[00:29:21] Who wasn't nominated for an Oscar for acting
[00:29:24] And he gets second billing
[00:29:25] Whoa
[00:29:26] Okay, yes
[00:29:27] Yeah
[00:29:28] So what Patricia Clarkson is
[00:29:30] Her character name is
[00:29:31] And the crowd's the end of that movie
[00:29:33] The woman
[00:29:34] Nessa's wife
[00:29:35] Yeah, oh god
[00:29:36] She's like got a huge part
[00:29:38] What are you gonna do
[00:29:39] Anyway, okay
[00:29:40] So Fletch, I'm sorry
[00:29:41] I think we're leading this episode too much
[00:29:42] We forgot that Ben is hosting
[00:29:43] Yes, yeah, yeah
[00:29:44] So all right
[00:29:45] We're at the beach, right?
[00:29:46] Yeah
[00:29:47] We established that Fletch
[00:29:48] Is working on a case
[00:29:49] He's trying to bust the drug activity
[00:29:51] That's happening there on the beach
[00:29:53] Mm-hmm
[00:29:54] Okay
[00:29:55] So
[00:29:56] You get a sense of who this guy is, right?
[00:29:58] You know, he's kind of silly, right?
[00:30:00] He's like always throwing out jokes
[00:30:02] And that's like right from the start
[00:30:04] That's gonna be the through line
[00:30:06] Throughout the rest of this film
[00:30:08] Yeah
[00:30:09] And I love that like
[00:30:10] David, you were saying that he's like
[00:30:11] Kind of in disguise
[00:30:12] Because he's trying to look like a bum
[00:30:13] Yeah
[00:30:14] But he also, everyone just looks at this guy
[00:30:15] And they're like
[00:30:16] This guy's not doing well, you know
[00:30:17] Yeah
[00:30:18] Like he doesn't disguise himself that much
[00:30:20] Like even though Chevy's like
[00:30:21] Really impossibly handsome in this movie
[00:30:23] Very handsome
[00:30:24] Very handsome
[00:30:25] He still looks like a guy who doesn't have his fucking shit together
[00:30:27] He's very handsome in his preppy, you know way
[00:30:29] Yeah
[00:30:30] I think it's Chevy at his handsome
[00:30:31] Well, he's very handsome on SNL
[00:30:33] Like young Chevy is really hot
[00:30:34] But anyway
[00:30:35] Yeah
[00:30:36] And again that sort of shit eating grin kind of way
[00:30:38] Not my type
[00:30:39] But like, you know, game recognized game
[00:30:41] Yeah, a guy's got a good face
[00:30:43] So
[00:30:44] While he's hanging out at the beach
[00:30:46] He's propositioned by this businessman
[00:30:48] Under the boardwalk
[00:30:50] And he
[00:30:51] You know
[00:30:52] It's so good, right?
[00:30:53] He goes up, he goes, listen
[00:30:54] I want you to listen to me for $1,000
[00:30:57] To come back to my house
[00:30:58] Tim Matheson
[00:30:59] Great Tim Matheson
[00:31:00] Yeah
[00:31:01] So Fletch throws out a couple fun lines
[00:31:02] He does it though
[00:31:03] Because he's interested
[00:31:04] He's always like looking for that next big story
[00:31:06] They go to the guy's house, right?
[00:31:08] Now
[00:31:09] The explanation for this
[00:31:11] Whole murder plot is so great
[00:31:13] I think it's justified
[00:31:15] I think it makes sense
[00:31:16] No, let's do it
[00:31:17] I think so too
[00:31:18] He's got a bone cancer
[00:31:19] Okay
[00:31:21] The bone cancer
[00:31:23] He's got the bone cancer
[00:31:24] Now in 85
[00:31:25] That probably flew
[00:31:26] You could tell people
[00:31:27] Yeah, sorry
[00:31:28] I gotta take off work
[00:31:29] I got bone cancer
[00:31:32] But uh
[00:31:33] Yeah, so
[00:31:34] Fletch can smell this
[00:31:35] This is bullshit
[00:31:36] Right
[00:31:37] But he's like, you know what
[00:31:38] There's something going on here
[00:31:40] His reporter nose is twitching
[00:31:41] There's a story here
[00:31:42] He's got
[00:31:43] Snipping the story
[00:31:45] And I love that setup
[00:31:46] Like immediately you know
[00:31:47] At the beginning of the movie they say
[00:31:48] You see in drugs hit the beach hard
[00:31:51] Right
[00:31:52] He doesn't like it
[00:31:53] He wants to bust it open
[00:31:54] You should say that George Wendt plays a
[00:31:56] Small time beach drug dealer
[00:31:58] Fat Tommy?
[00:31:59] Yeah
[00:32:00] Is that his name?
[00:32:01] Fat Tommy?
[00:32:02] Fat Jimmy?
[00:32:03] What is it?
[00:32:04] And he's got sort of occasion accent
[00:32:05] Uh huh
[00:32:06] He's amazing in this movie
[00:32:07] He's so good
[00:32:08] He should have been second-built
[00:32:10] But there's this sense that
[00:32:11] Like Fletch is breaking this story
[00:32:13] Because he actually cares for
[00:32:15] These like acts
[00:32:17] Yeah, the random junkies
[00:32:19] On the beach
[00:32:20] I mean Fletch
[00:32:22] He relates to
[00:32:25] The guys on the margins of society
[00:32:27] Right
[00:32:28] And it's easy for him
[00:32:29] To just bust those guys
[00:32:31] Right
[00:32:32] But it's like he knows
[00:32:33] There's a bigger hand at play
[00:32:35] Because that's what Fletch really hates
[00:32:37] Is whoever's in the ivory tower
[00:32:39] You know what I'm saying?
[00:32:40] And so he's on that case
[00:32:41] And he says
[00:32:42] I think I'm getting close to
[00:32:43] Busting the story
[00:32:44] I've been working on it for a long time
[00:32:45] And you get that he like
[00:32:46] Genuinely cares about like
[00:32:48] Gummy on the beach, right?
[00:32:49] Totally
[00:32:50] Okay, so then when Tim Matheson
[00:32:51] Comes with this murder thing
[00:32:53] The film sets it up as just like
[00:32:54] Well Fletch isn't going to turn down a good story
[00:32:56] Right
[00:32:57] And almost like classic like
[00:32:58] Detective style story
[00:33:00] Yeah
[00:33:01] They'll do that sometimes
[00:33:02] Or you have a bigger case
[00:33:03] And then they just throw a little
[00:33:04] Small one
[00:33:05] To kind of distract you
[00:33:06] For the time being
[00:33:07] But it's not immediately apparent
[00:33:08] That these two things are connected in any way
[00:33:10] No no no
[00:33:11] It's not
[00:33:12] Which I like
[00:33:13] You have a sneaking suspicion
[00:33:14] That it might be
[00:33:15] Well because it's a movie
[00:33:16] Yeah that's how I know
[00:33:17] And the bone cancer
[00:33:18] Bone cancer is a little convenient
[00:33:21] A little convenient
[00:33:22] Yeah
[00:33:23] So we can cut to his workplace
[00:33:26] Oh you didn't say what the final
[00:33:28] What the offer was though
[00:33:29] For Tim Matheson
[00:33:30] Oh excuse me
[00:33:31] Of course
[00:33:32] Right
[00:33:33] So the deal is
[00:33:34] If Fletch will murder him
[00:33:37] Yeah
[00:33:38] Okay
[00:33:39] And
[00:33:40] Murder
[00:33:41] And then
[00:33:42] I guess burn up his body
[00:33:43] Yeah
[00:33:44] And basically the whole idea is that
[00:33:46] Tim Matheson has bone cancer
[00:33:48] He
[00:33:50] He doesn't want to suffer
[00:33:51] He doesn't want to suffer
[00:33:52] He also though he wants to make sure
[00:33:53] His family gets the life insurance money
[00:33:55] And if he kills himself
[00:33:56] The policy will be void
[00:33:57] Right
[00:33:58] So this all makes sense
[00:33:59] He's thought of this through
[00:34:00] He wants Fletch this low life
[00:34:02] To murder him
[00:34:03] Burn him up in his car
[00:34:04] And then leave the country with $50,000
[00:34:07] And he says like you know
[00:34:08] I've been scouring the beach
[00:34:09] I've been watching you
[00:34:10] I see how you function
[00:34:12] You know
[00:34:13] You're a drifter
[00:34:14] No one cares about you
[00:34:16] You know no one will notice
[00:34:17] If you're gone
[00:34:18] You'll be able to make a new life for yourself
[00:34:19] But I can also tell
[00:34:20] You're kind of smart
[00:34:21] And you can get things done
[00:34:22] Like cause he sees how much Fletch
[00:34:23] Is working the beach
[00:34:24] Right
[00:34:25] And he doesn't know that Fletch
[00:34:27] Is working something bigger
[00:34:28] Of course he doesn't
[00:34:29] Cause he's in disguise
[00:34:30] Fletch is working overtime
[00:34:31] He's a man of many disguises
[00:34:32] Fletch is working overtime
[00:34:34] Alright so
[00:34:36] This is fun
[00:34:37] Okay this is
[00:34:38] Fun
[00:34:39] This is what we do
[00:34:40] Then we go to the office
[00:34:41] And you get a sense of what his workplace is like
[00:34:43] He is really on deadline
[00:34:45] And he's got nothing
[00:34:46] Fletch has got nothing
[00:34:48] Okay his boss
[00:34:49] He's riding his ass hard
[00:34:51] He's got uh
[00:34:52] Who's his co-workers?
[00:34:53] Gina Davis
[00:34:54] Gina Davis
[00:34:55] She's so cute
[00:34:56] She's so great in this
[00:34:57] Such a great actress
[00:34:58] I miss her
[00:34:59] This is
[00:35:00] Has she won her Oscar yet?
[00:35:02] This is like probably right before
[00:35:03] This is before
[00:35:04] It's not long
[00:35:05] Accidental tourist I think is 88
[00:35:07] Am I wrong about that?
[00:35:08] Find out
[00:35:10] Cause Beeljuice is 87
[00:35:11] 88
[00:35:12] Hey nailed it
[00:35:13] I knew she hadn't been
[00:35:14] Fedded by the time she did Beeljuice
[00:35:16] She's only been in Tutsi before this
[00:35:18] And Tutsi's three years earlier
[00:35:19] And then after this she goes
[00:35:21] The fly
[00:35:22] Beeljuice which is 86
[00:35:23] Yeah
[00:35:24] Earth girls are easy
[00:35:25] Accidental tourist
[00:35:26] Delman Louise
[00:35:27] League of their own
[00:35:28] What a run
[00:35:29] Holy shit
[00:35:30] What a run
[00:35:31] And then like the run
[00:35:32] Literally the train doesn't like derail
[00:35:33] It explodes in a nuclear bomb
[00:35:35] Well she marries Rennie Harlan
[00:35:36] Yeah and then it's like
[00:35:37] I mean I like the long kiss good night
[00:35:39] I do too
[00:35:40] But you've got you know
[00:35:41] Cutthroat Island
[00:35:42] Hero, Angie
[00:35:43] Cutthroat Island
[00:35:44] Stewart little two
[00:35:45] Never makes a movie again
[00:35:46] Hey but it's Stewart little one though
[00:35:48] I mean one and two
[00:35:49] I don't know why I said two
[00:35:50] Yeah come on
[00:35:52] And she should come back
[00:35:54] Isn't she on some TV show this fall?
[00:35:56] She was on Commander in Chief
[00:35:57] A few years back
[00:35:58] And that was gonna be like
[00:35:59] This big deal
[00:36:00] Oh she's on the Exorcist TV show
[00:36:02] Which is supposed to be very good
[00:36:04] I have heard
[00:36:05] What?
[00:36:06] From who have you heard
[00:36:07] From insiders
[00:36:08] Richard Wyatt directed it
[00:36:10] Who the fuck is that?
[00:36:11] He directed the dawn of the plan of the apes
[00:36:13] Which I love
[00:36:15] What?
[00:36:16] Yeah
[00:36:17] No Rupert Wyatt
[00:36:18] He directed the first one
[00:36:20] Not dawn
[00:36:21] Rise of the plan of the apes
[00:36:22] Sorry I get that title is confused
[00:36:23] I get this title is confused
[00:36:24] Much better
[00:36:25] I agree but I also think he's a very good director
[00:36:27] Rupert Wyatt is the guy who makes no weight in the Huntsman
[00:36:29] No it's not
[00:36:30] That's Rupert Sanders
[00:36:31] Oh right well it's fair that I mix those two up
[00:36:33] Yes
[00:36:34] Rupert Wyatt is much better though
[00:36:35] The Exorcist script is supposed to be good
[00:36:37] Gene Davis is on it
[00:36:38] I hope it's a comeback
[00:36:39] Anyway he's in the office
[00:36:40] Right he's in the office
[00:36:41] We meet his boss
[00:36:43] Played by
[00:36:45] Libertini
[00:36:46] I don't know his first name
[00:36:48] That is looking like he's Libertini
[00:36:50] I'm trying to throw facts out
[00:36:51] I don't know
[00:36:52] His boss is just
[00:36:53] I mean this is the thing about it
[00:36:55] It's almost like Fletcher's a cop
[00:36:56] Because his boss
[00:36:57] Literally is like the police lieutenant
[00:36:58] He's like damn it Fletcher
[00:37:00] You can drive with me crazy
[00:37:01] You know like he's like bald
[00:37:03] And like ahhh
[00:37:04] That's what I love about this movie
[00:37:05] Because it's a mix of all the things that I'm super into
[00:37:07] I like pulpy detective kind of stuff
[00:37:09] I love the hard boiled cop kind of story
[00:37:11] But then there's also a funny guy
[00:37:13] It's a fun but it's also a
[00:37:15] I like a reporter movie
[00:37:16] You know there's not enough good reporter movies
[00:37:17] It's a good mix of all this stuff
[00:37:19] So it just excites me
[00:37:20] It really does
[00:37:21] Well it's the sense that like Fletcher
[00:37:22] Takes the responsibility
[00:37:24] Of being a journalist
[00:37:25] Very seriously
[00:37:27] Like weirdly
[00:37:28] Like he doesn't take anything else seriously
[00:37:30] But like his editor is going like
[00:37:31] Fletcher I need a story tomorrow
[00:37:33] We're going to press
[00:37:34] And he's like I'm not giving you a story until I crack the case
[00:37:37] Because I need to affect change
[00:37:39] Like I need to fucking take shit down
[00:37:41] And so Fletcher just keeps on saying
[00:37:43] Like I'm working on it
[00:37:44] I'm working on it
[00:37:45] And Libertine he's just fucking losing it
[00:37:47] He's losing it
[00:37:48] He took an ad out for Fletcher's next column
[00:37:50] In his own paper which is truly strange
[00:37:52] Cause it's big
[00:37:53] I mean when you go to the office
[00:37:54] Whole page ad
[00:37:55] I mean like that is a waste
[00:37:57] That is a waste of newspaper resources
[00:37:59] You want to use the whole page to get money
[00:38:01] Like what the fuck is he thinking?
[00:38:03] I don't know if you notice
[00:38:04] This guy should be fired is what I'm saying
[00:38:06] Yeah oh no question
[00:38:07] Gea Davis promoter
[00:38:08] No question
[00:38:09] Make her the editor
[00:38:10] I don't know if you notice
[00:38:11] This guy on the street
[00:38:12] I want to run a beach doing junk in a week
[00:38:14] In the office they have like these big
[00:38:16] Giant like framed
[00:38:18] Prinouts of the Jane Doe pieces
[00:38:20] So it's clear that like the Jane Doe pieces
[00:38:22] Are like huge for them
[00:38:24] Right
[00:38:25] That's kind of like their competitive advantage
[00:38:27] Although when he mentions
[00:38:28] The one time he mentions these Jane Doe
[00:38:30] It gets no reaction out of
[00:38:32] Dana Wheeler Nicholson
[00:38:34] Cause they're in the ivory tower
[00:38:36] I just wanted someone to be like
[00:38:38] Here Jane Doe I wanted that moment
[00:38:40] But there's also
[00:38:42] A thing I love in this opening scene
[00:38:44] Where like Gea Davis is clearly like his buddy
[00:38:46] Right
[00:38:47] Like she's his ally you know
[00:38:48] They're like in it together
[00:38:50] And she's always there to sort of go like
[00:38:52] Come on boss like he's fucking flesh
[00:38:54] Come on right
[00:38:55] And there's a moment when like
[00:38:56] He walks in and Libertini's like
[00:38:58] Fletch where's my piece
[00:38:59] And like Chevy throws out like a few fucking
[00:39:01] Fletchisms right
[00:39:02] And Gina like laughs at all of them
[00:39:04] And it's this thing that counties don't do anymore
[00:39:07] Which is acknowledged that the characters in the movie
[00:39:09] Are funny to the other people in that world
[00:39:12] Right
[00:39:13] Like what I don't like is in comedies
[00:39:14] When someone does something ridiculous
[00:39:15] And everyone else is just aghast
[00:39:17] And it's like
[00:39:18] No in real life if that happened you'd laugh
[00:39:20] Like whether it's uncomfortable laughter
[00:39:22] Cause you can't believe something
[00:39:23] That insane it's happening on
[00:39:24] Or because they're your friends
[00:39:26] And you know they're funny
[00:39:27] So like he's fucking like yucking it up
[00:39:29] And G Davis is like I love Fletch
[00:39:31] Nah
[00:39:32] Like G Davis is like a fan of Fletch
[00:39:33] Like she gets the Fletch is funny
[00:39:35] She believes him too
[00:39:36] She believes him
[00:39:37] She believes him
[00:39:38] Cause he's a good reporter
[00:39:39] He's a good reporter
[00:39:40] Alright so carry on
[00:39:41] Alright so
[00:39:42] Well you know what
[00:39:43] He's gotta look into the Stanwick character
[00:39:44] Right
[00:39:45] He's gotta see what's going on
[00:39:46] Yeah so what's his name
[00:39:47] Tim Stanwick
[00:39:48] What's his name
[00:39:49] Tim Mathis
[00:39:50] Alan Stanwick
[00:39:51] Alan Stanwick
[00:39:52] So you know again
[00:39:53] He's got this drug case
[00:39:54] But you know what
[00:39:55] This guy who knows what's going on here
[00:39:57] He puts the drug case on the back burner
[00:39:59] It does
[00:40:00] It's a journalism term
[00:40:01] So you cut to the Stanwick's doctor
[00:40:04] Right
[00:40:05] And this is your first real
[00:40:07] I would say like official character
[00:40:09] Played by legendary character
[00:40:11] Director M. Emmett Walsh
[00:40:13] You know him
[00:40:14] Yeah
[00:40:15] No he's great
[00:40:16] He's one of the best
[00:40:17] Do you like this scene Ben
[00:40:18] This feels like the kind of scene
[00:40:19] That would have played well for a 13 year old
[00:40:20] Yeah I like this scene
[00:40:21] Ben's grinning ear to ear
[00:40:23] Moon River
[00:40:25] That's what he does
[00:40:27] I love it
[00:40:28] Ben is scarlet with satisfaction right now
[00:40:31] He's red with amusement
[00:40:33] He's he's I'm not joking
[00:40:35] He's bright red because he's laughing so hard
[00:40:37] Oh man
[00:40:38] Ben's just thinking about Fletcher and he's laughing
[00:40:40] So funny
[00:40:41] Yeah he's trying to work this doctor
[00:40:43] Get some info
[00:40:44] Right
[00:40:45] Doctor Stonewalls him
[00:40:46] Yeah
[00:40:47] And does a prostate exam
[00:40:48] So really like
[00:40:49] You know
[00:40:50] Fletch really blows this scene
[00:40:52] I'm not gonna say
[00:40:53] No info
[00:40:54] Except that I guess this man is Stanwick's doctor
[00:40:57] I suppose he does confirm that
[00:40:59] He confirms that
[00:41:00] And he also gets a free butt fingering out of the process
[00:41:03] You know what I mean
[00:41:04] That's not nothing
[00:41:05] Usually gotta pay a good dollar for a nice butt fingering
[00:41:08] And you know what
[00:41:09] Fletch establishes too
[00:41:10] He's really good at bullshitting
[00:41:12] Yeah
[00:41:13] But maybe not as
[00:41:14] He's obviously not getting anything out of this guy
[00:41:16] But again like
[00:41:17] You're seeing here like
[00:41:18] He can like
[00:41:19] Oh Margaret
[00:41:20] You know
[00:41:21] Oh I go to the same tennis club
[00:41:22] He's just bullshitting this guy
[00:41:24] I mean Chevy Chay is really good at this
[00:41:26] Plush play is the long game
[00:41:27] I feel like
[00:41:28] So we should say
[00:41:29] The recurring joke of the movie is
[00:41:31] He's really good at bullshitting
[00:41:33] He's good at like
[00:41:34] Seeming natural
[00:41:35] But he can't do names
[00:41:36] And every name he comes out with is absolutely ludicrous
[00:41:39] So it's one of two things
[00:41:40] My favorite is Doctor Rosen Rosen
[00:41:41] Right
[00:41:42] When he's trying
[00:41:43] Yeah yeah yeah
[00:41:44] It's either he starts out with the first half
[00:41:45] Of a last name
[00:41:46] He can't make up the rest of it
[00:41:47] Right
[00:41:48] Or it's he picks
[00:41:49] A very well known person
[00:41:50] He's Ted Nugent
[00:41:51] What's the other one
[00:41:52] Don Corleone
[00:41:53] Don Corleone was great
[00:41:54] Doesn't he say Franklin Delano Roosevelt once
[00:41:56] They go like the president
[00:41:57] He goes yeah my parents are big friends
[00:41:59] No no Harry Estrument
[00:42:00] Harry Estrument yes sorry
[00:42:01] Yeah but he goes like
[00:42:03] My name is John
[00:42:04] We're from
[00:42:05] Smokin' Whits
[00:42:06] Yeah
[00:42:07] Like he'll just like
[00:42:08] Cock and Toast
[00:42:09] Right that's what it is
[00:42:10] He's a Scotch Romanian
[00:42:11] The Rosen Rosen one's amazing
[00:42:13] The Doctor
[00:42:14] Because he just keeps on saying
[00:42:15] Doctor Rosen Rosen
[00:42:16] Who?
[00:42:17] He goes Rosen Steenberg
[00:42:18] Like he just keeps on
[00:42:19] He's like if I start with Rosen
[00:42:20] There's gonna be a doctor
[00:42:21] Who's Doctor Rosen Blank
[00:42:23] So if I have enough chances
[00:42:25] One of them is gonna hit
[00:42:26] Um
[00:42:27] Gets his butt finger
[00:42:28] I feel like Chase is
[00:42:29] Adlibbing a lot of that
[00:42:30] Right that must have been
[00:42:31] A vintage Chevy Adlib
[00:42:33] Definitely
[00:42:34] Yeah
[00:42:35] Okay so now
[00:42:36] He still isn't
[00:42:37] He's not satisfied right
[00:42:38] He hasn't gotten any stand
[00:42:39] No not enough info
[00:42:40] So now he's at the hospital
[00:42:41] Right we have the little fun
[00:42:42] Rosen Rosen moment
[00:42:43] Me is actually satisfied
[00:42:44] Because he got the butt finger
[00:42:45] But yeah yeah
[00:42:46] That's true
[00:42:47] Moon
[00:42:48] Moon
[00:42:49] River
[00:42:50] So he's at the hospital
[00:42:52] He goes into the records room
[00:42:53] Right
[00:42:54] Yeah
[00:42:55] Now you know
[00:42:56] There's just some high jinks
[00:42:57] That ensue he faints
[00:42:58] Because of a spleen
[00:42:59] Yeah he takes part
[00:43:00] In like open heart surgery
[00:43:01] Or whatever
[00:43:02] They do one of those
[00:43:03] Like hey doctor
[00:43:04] You know one of those
[00:43:05] Like drop in surgeon spots
[00:43:06] And he's like
[00:43:07] I'm not sterilized
[00:43:08] And the doctor's like
[00:43:09] Hey it doesn't matter
[00:43:10] This guy can't get sick
[00:43:11] Any more sick can he
[00:43:12] Which I think is not true
[00:43:13] Yeah
[00:43:14] It holds the spleen
[00:43:15] He faints
[00:43:16] He ends up in the records room
[00:43:17] With a nurse
[00:43:18] Right
[00:43:19] And he's doing his old
[00:43:20] Fletch routine
[00:43:21] Yep
[00:43:22] He sends the nurse off
[00:43:23] To go get him something
[00:43:24] Now you have another moment
[00:43:26] In movies that I love
[00:43:27] Which is classic computer graphics
[00:43:30] Right
[00:43:31] Like your old school
[00:43:32] Like
[00:43:33] Sure
[00:43:34] Love that stuff
[00:43:35] Then you also
[00:43:36] He's got an actual like
[00:43:37] Files
[00:43:38] This isn't the age of internet guys
[00:43:39] The computer tells him
[00:43:40] Where the file is
[00:43:41] The computer doesn't have
[00:43:42] Files on it
[00:43:43] It's just a
[00:43:44] It's a digital card catalog
[00:43:46] Yeah
[00:43:47] I'm excited
[00:43:48] That bends like guys
[00:43:50] This is cool
[00:43:51] Now I don't want to rate on your parade
[00:43:52] They are
[00:43:53] There is one massive oversight here
[00:43:55] What's that
[00:43:56] No mouse work
[00:43:57] That's true
[00:43:58] They don't show them clickin' men
[00:44:00] And I was a little upset
[00:44:02] But I'm okay because
[00:44:04] If it's MS-DOS
[00:44:05] Then you know what
[00:44:06] It gets a pass
[00:44:07] Don't need a mouse
[00:44:08] It doesn't need a mouse
[00:44:09] And physical files
[00:44:10] You're getting two out of three
[00:44:11] Two out of three ain't fat
[00:44:13] So he
[00:44:15] Pretty much
[00:44:16] Is able to figure out
[00:44:17] This guy doesn't have bone cancer
[00:44:19] Yeah
[00:44:20] Right, he's bullshit
[00:44:21] Yeah
[00:44:22] Something's fishy
[00:44:23] Okay
[00:44:24] So then
[00:44:25] Alright
[00:44:26] This is actually
[00:44:27] This is quite a challenge
[00:44:28] You guys are good at this
[00:44:29] Okay
[00:44:30] So now he's like
[00:44:31] Let's look into the wife
[00:44:32] Right
[00:44:33] And then we get into
[00:44:35] Your classic 80s vape
[00:44:37] Right
[00:44:38] She's got all the characteristics
[00:44:39] Of an 80s vape
[00:44:40] A very blown out hair
[00:44:42] Right
[00:44:43] Yeah
[00:44:45] She's like
[00:44:46] Somebody I've never ever seen
[00:44:48] Ever again
[00:44:49] That's a big one
[00:44:50] She's just the babe
[00:44:51] Movies like this
[00:44:52] The top-billed woman
[00:44:54] Is never in another movie
[00:44:56] She just disappears
[00:44:57] But the supporting actresses
[00:44:58] Are like Academy Award winner
[00:44:59] Gina Davis
[00:45:00] Yeah
[00:45:01] Like Gina Davis has three scenes
[00:45:02] But no one
[00:45:03] I challenge anyone to tell me
[00:45:05] Without looking it up
[00:45:06] Who the lead actresses
[00:45:07] In Beverly Hills cop
[00:45:10] Who's a huge part
[00:45:11] I don't know
[00:45:12] She's like third building that movie
[00:45:13] No one can tell me who the actresses
[00:45:15] Who is it?
[00:45:16] I have no idea
[00:45:17] That's my point
[00:45:18] I can't tell you
[00:45:19] I thought you were going to be like
[00:45:20] And it turns out it was
[00:45:21] Bet Davis
[00:45:22] No, but Ben's isolating
[00:45:23] A really strong point here
[00:45:24] These movies never
[00:45:25] The lead actresses
[00:45:26] Never in
[00:45:27] Yeah
[00:45:28] It is
[00:45:29] Let me tell you
[00:45:31] Wikipedia
[00:45:32] Is telling me
[00:45:33] That it is
[00:45:34] Lisa
[00:45:35] Islebacker
[00:45:36] Yeah exactly
[00:45:37] What a performance
[00:45:38] Yeah
[00:45:40] So we're at the tennis club
[00:45:41] You get a bunch of really fun
[00:45:43] Little hijinks
[00:45:44] I mean I've already
[00:45:45] At the top of the episode
[00:45:47] Right he overhears this douche bag guy
[00:45:50] Asshole
[00:45:51] Be mean to a waiter
[00:45:52] Underhill
[00:45:53] Underhill
[00:45:54] He keeps on yelling it out
[00:45:55] And he's going to fucking get this guy
[00:45:56] Because again
[00:45:57] He's against those like
[00:45:58] But this is what
[00:45:59] This is what I like
[00:46:00] It's not
[00:46:01] Like
[00:46:02] I mean the way you're making it sound
[00:46:03] It's like Chevy Chase
[00:46:04] Turns to the camera
[00:46:05] And he's like hey rich people
[00:46:06] It's all very underhanded and like calm
[00:46:08] He just
[00:46:09] He just fucks these guys over and over
[00:46:10] And he doesn't like them
[00:46:11] And also
[00:46:12] It's just
[00:46:13] It's very relaxed and subtle
[00:46:14] I think it's good
[00:46:15] I really do
[00:46:16] And the way the underhill thing is established
[00:46:17] Is just like
[00:46:18] It's like a fucking tracking shot
[00:46:19] He's walking by them
[00:46:20] It seems like it's maybe
[00:46:21] You're taken in the club
[00:46:22] And it seems like it's maybe
[00:46:23] Just sort of ambiance
[00:46:24] Right it's character detail
[00:46:25] They don't hit it too hard
[00:46:26] He's just being really disrespectful
[00:46:28] To this waiter
[00:46:29] And saying his name a couple times
[00:46:30] Like don't you know who I am
[00:46:31] Underhill
[00:46:32] Underhill
[00:46:33] And then like two scenes later
[00:46:34] You know I mean not two scenes later
[00:46:35] But like a minute or two pass
[00:46:37] And then he's ordering from the guy
[00:46:39] And goes like oh
[00:46:40] And put it on the underhills
[00:46:41] Like it's an after
[00:46:44] And it's just like yeah
[00:46:45] You know fucking like treat other people well
[00:46:48] Right
[00:46:49] Like don't pull rank
[00:46:50] You're not better than gummy on the beach
[00:46:52] Gummy's a good man
[00:46:53] You fucking under go
[00:46:55] It's just falling under hard times
[00:46:56] Yeah
[00:46:57] He's being taken advantage of
[00:46:58] Yeah
[00:46:59] So now I'm going to order
[00:47:00] A Bloody Mary stick sandwich
[00:47:02] And a stick sandwich
[00:47:03] Yeah great job
[00:47:04] It's a great deal
[00:47:05] Love it
[00:47:06] Love it so much
[00:47:07] Yeah
[00:47:08] Okay so
[00:47:09] He flirts with her a little bit
[00:47:11] Again it's still not really clear
[00:47:12] What's happening with this storyline
[00:47:14] Compared to the drug story
[00:47:16] No and he's doing the classic
[00:47:17] Fletch like who are you
[00:47:19] Dave Dave who
[00:47:20] Oh Dave Dave
[00:47:21] Matt the way
[00:47:22] Cock and toast
[00:47:24] And then he's
[00:47:25] He does the
[00:47:26] You're gone
[00:47:27] No no no
[00:47:28] You got it
[00:47:29] What's up
[00:47:30] I was remembering
[00:47:31] It's early with the doctor
[00:47:32] Where he does that thing
[00:47:33] I don't know you from the club
[00:47:34] I have never seen your name
[00:47:35] And he's like
[00:47:36] Oh my aunt
[00:47:37] Mrs. Smith
[00:47:38] And he's like
[00:47:39] Dorothy or you know Mildred
[00:47:40] Yeah
[00:47:41] He's like
[00:47:42] He says yes
[00:47:43] Yeah right yeah
[00:47:44] And she goes which one is it
[00:47:45] Yeah
[00:47:46] Oh right
[00:47:47] This is the big Fletch thing
[00:47:48] Is he
[00:47:49] Says something that's incorrect
[00:47:50] Someone catches him in the lie
[00:47:51] And he doubles down on it
[00:47:52] So like in that doctor scene
[00:47:53] He goes like Mildred
[00:47:54] And she goes like
[00:47:55] Oh shame about what happened to Reg
[00:47:56] Right
[00:47:57] And he goes oh it was so sudden
[00:47:58] He's like what do you mean
[00:47:59] He was in intensive care for weeks
[00:48:00] He's like it was sudden when he died
[00:48:01] Like the actual moment of his death
[00:48:03] Right
[00:48:04] And he does the same thing here
[00:48:05] Where it's like
[00:48:06] When she's like
[00:48:07] Where do I know you from
[00:48:08] The wedding
[00:48:09] I didn't see that
[00:48:10] My wedding
[00:48:11] I was at your wedding
[00:48:12] You know I mean
[00:48:13] He's just like constantly
[00:48:14] Like you can't catch Fletch
[00:48:16] Can't catch Fletch
[00:48:17] He's unflappable
[00:48:18] That's right
[00:48:19] Yeah
[00:48:20] Alright
[00:48:21] You can't Fletch catch
[00:48:22] You can't
[00:48:23] Fletch me if you can bro
[00:48:25] What if that's the name of the episode
[00:48:27] Oh that's good
[00:48:28] I like
[00:48:29] Well whatever
[00:48:30] We'll talk about it
[00:48:31] Okay
[00:48:32] Alright so
[00:48:33] Right
[00:48:34] He's still not getting to the bottom of this guy
[00:48:36] Now I'm pretty sure
[00:48:37] Correct me if I'm wrong
[00:48:38] This is when he goes home
[00:48:40] To his bachelor pad
[00:48:41] Correct
[00:48:42] Right
[00:48:43] Cool
[00:48:44] As bachelor pad
[00:48:45] Walks in
[00:48:46] As bachelor pad
[00:48:47] Immediately pulls some lever off the ceiling
[00:48:48] Basketball comes out
[00:48:49] He fucking
[00:48:50] Shoot
[00:48:51] He's divorced
[00:48:52] We learned that
[00:48:53] Right
[00:48:54] And he's
[00:48:55] I mean it's not cool to not pay alimony
[00:48:56] But when I was a kid
[00:48:58] I was like this guy's cool
[00:48:59] He's like in the shit
[00:49:00] He's like
[00:49:01] A master of disguise
[00:49:02] He's like kind of like a bullshitter
[00:49:04] He's like running
[00:49:05] Like climbing up a fire escape
[00:49:06] To get away from his like
[00:49:07] You know bad finances
[00:49:08] Right I mean he
[00:49:09] He uses a credit card
[00:49:11] To like unhatch the lint
[00:49:13] The
[00:49:14] Fucking what's the
[00:49:15] Unlatch
[00:49:16] The hinge
[00:49:17] Right
[00:49:18] On the window
[00:49:19] And then his
[00:49:20] Apartments filled with Laker stuff
[00:49:22] Right
[00:49:23] He's got a basketball hoop
[00:49:25] Right
[00:49:26] In his apartment
[00:49:27] George Weiner comes in
[00:49:28] As like the collection agent
[00:49:29] Like need the alimony
[00:49:30] Yep
[00:49:31] And he's like
[00:49:32] Come on my wife
[00:49:33] Like fucking fucked me over
[00:49:34] She's with a guy right now
[00:49:35] He's got tons of money
[00:49:36] She's just trying to fleece me
[00:49:37] She cheated on me
[00:49:38] The whole time with everybody
[00:49:40] I mean I can't believe
[00:49:41] Like I got stuck
[00:49:42] With this deal in court
[00:49:43] He's like
[00:49:44] Well cause your lawyer
[00:49:45] Was sleeping with her too
[00:49:46] That's a little moment
[00:49:47] Where he's like
[00:49:48] Really
[00:49:49] Yeah he didn't know
[00:49:50] Like look I passed the pass
[00:49:51] Yeah Chevy sells that
[00:49:52] Yeah
[00:49:53] He's like
[00:49:54] He's shocked
[00:49:55] But the way he says
[00:49:56] Like
[00:49:57] She was sleeping with everybody
[00:49:58] Yeah
[00:49:59] It isn't even like
[00:50:00] He's slut shaming her
[00:50:01] It's just like
[00:50:02] Fuck it's just like
[00:50:03] I can't catch a break
[00:50:04] Like he's kinda sad about it
[00:50:05] Like he's not angry
[00:50:06] Of vindictive towards her
[00:50:07] But you know what
[00:50:08] He's like fine letter though
[00:50:09] Well no he knows he blew it
[00:50:10] Because he's an investigative reporter
[00:50:11] Yeah
[00:50:12] He was probably always on the job
[00:50:13] Didn't have time for her
[00:50:14] Yeah wasn't giving her
[00:50:15] Any attention bro
[00:50:16] Fletch was working overtime
[00:50:17] Wasn't
[00:50:18] I will say can I just
[00:50:19] Briefly mention the nice guys
[00:50:21] Which I saw last night
[00:50:22] Yeah
[00:50:23] And I wanna just say
[00:50:24] Have you seen the nice guys
[00:50:25] You would enjoy it
[00:50:26] Fletch you'd enjoy this movie
[00:50:27] Oh yeah I've seen the nice guys
[00:50:28] You saw it
[00:50:29] Okay
[00:50:30] Yeah it's really good
[00:50:31] Because there's a scene early on
[00:50:32] Where Russell Crowe's character
[00:50:34] Flashes back to a girl
[00:50:36] Breaking up with him
[00:50:37] And they're just like at dinner
[00:50:38] He's like how are you doing
[00:50:39] She's like so I've been fucking your dad
[00:50:41] And he does the most incredible spit take
[00:50:43] I've ever seen
[00:50:44] Which is not the usual
[00:50:45] Like spitting it out of your mouth
[00:50:46] But he kinda like
[00:50:47] Just throws water out of his mouth
[00:50:49] Into the air
[00:50:50] It's incredible
[00:50:51] He's like taking a drink of water
[00:50:52] And he goes like
[00:50:53] I can't
[00:50:54] Do you remember this
[00:50:55] Oh it's the best moment in the movie
[00:50:56] It's so good
[00:50:57] It's not the best moment in the movie
[00:50:59] But it's so good
[00:51:00] I think it's my favorite moment in the movie
[00:51:01] Oh no no no
[00:51:02] The fucking gozzling cigarette
[00:51:03] In the bathroom stalls
[00:51:04] Best moment in the movie
[00:51:05] That is so much fine tune
[00:51:07] Physical comedy in that movie
[00:51:08] Anyway that's a movie that has a vibe
[00:51:09] Like Fletch
[00:51:10] Agreed
[00:51:11] The closest I think we've gotten
[00:51:12] To a Fletch in a very long time
[00:51:13] Your brother Joey Samms
[00:51:15] Had a really good tweet review
[00:51:17] Of the good guys
[00:51:18] Because I know you saw it together last night
[00:51:19] Go ahead yeah we did
[00:51:20] Which was the good guys
[00:51:21] More like a good movie
[00:51:22] Yeah nice guys
[00:51:23] More like a good movie
[00:51:24] Sorry sorry
[00:51:25] That was the thing that I liked
[00:51:26] The nice guys
[00:51:27] He didn't say a nice movie
[00:51:28] He said a good movie
[00:51:29] Yeah yeah
[00:51:31] Alright so
[00:51:33] Yeah so cool place
[00:51:34] We get that weird
[00:51:35] LA Lakers dream sequence
[00:51:37] Yeah that's weird
[00:51:38] Although
[00:51:39] I don't think he's wearing blackface at all
[00:51:40] So go on him
[00:51:41] No he's not
[00:51:42] He's wearing an afro
[00:51:43] Yeah
[00:51:44] I think Karim Abdul-Jabbar
[00:51:45] Did a little
[00:51:46] You know contributed to this
[00:51:47] Yeah he's not a handmaid
[00:51:48] He's credited
[00:51:49] Right so that's
[00:51:50] Special appearance
[00:51:51] Yeah that's him
[00:51:52] Good job buddy
[00:51:53] Just saying
[00:51:54] Yeah and he's being interviewed by me
[00:51:55] Saying like Fletcher's like the best player they got
[00:51:57] But he's definitely not doing blackface
[00:51:59] And the afro is just
[00:52:00] Like I mean it's one of the guys had afros at that time
[00:52:02] You know like
[00:52:03] It's got touches
[00:52:04] I mean it says like he's from Harlem
[00:52:06] Right like what's he like
[00:52:07] Yeah
[00:52:08] But whatever
[00:52:09] You know it's a different time
[00:52:10] And like
[00:52:11] It's honestly so stupid
[00:52:12] It's just dumb aside
[00:52:13] But I sort of like it
[00:52:14] We're also far away
[00:52:15] From bringing down the house
[00:52:17] You know I mean we're not like
[00:52:18] Edging into that territory
[00:52:20] And it also
[00:52:21] It's just like
[00:52:22] What's you know like what's the most important thing in the world
[00:52:24] To Fletcher
[00:52:25] He loves the Lakers
[00:52:26] He loves the Lakers
[00:52:27] He loves the Lakers
[00:52:28] He really loves them
[00:52:29] Alright so what's going on
[00:52:30] Alright so
[00:52:31] I feel like we're losing the thread
[00:52:32] Yeah no and it gets a little confusing around here
[00:52:34] But essentially let's just say
[00:52:36] Fletcher figures out that Stanwyck's wife Gail
[00:52:39] Owns to some personal stock
[00:52:41] In this Boyd aviation
[00:52:43] Who's played by Daynor Wheeler Nicholson
[00:52:45] Gail
[00:52:46] Dayno Wheeler Nicholson
[00:52:48] No Gail is
[00:52:49] Oh you're talking about the real Gail
[00:52:50] The real Gail
[00:52:51] Alright
[00:52:52] So he gets some money
[00:52:54] To go and look into this
[00:52:57] Real estate in Provo, Utah
[00:53:00] Right
[00:53:01] And so this goes on to
[00:53:03] You know there's like the fun stuff where
[00:53:05] He calls the shady realtor
[00:53:07] Right and then he breaks in after the guy's left
[00:53:10] And like again get some fucking files
[00:53:13] And taking photos
[00:53:14] He's got a little secret camera
[00:53:16] And there's a dog that jumps through a window
[00:53:19] He's got some great banner with the dog
[00:53:21] They play some great Howard Faltemeyer music
[00:53:23] The dog almost speaks English
[00:53:25] There's that weird gag where he's like
[00:53:27] Trying to distract the dog and he's like
[00:53:29] Look defenseless babies or whatever
[00:53:31] And the dog goes like woo
[00:53:33] It's a weird moment
[00:53:35] It's a very weird moment
[00:53:37] Okay so what else
[00:53:38] Do you think Benji was pissed that he didn't get that part
[00:53:40] Cause probably when they sent the breakdown out
[00:53:42] He was like I've worked with Chevy
[00:53:43] I don't think Chevy and Benji got along
[00:53:45] Oh you think probably that Benji
[00:53:47] Didn't want to work with Chevy ever again
[00:53:49] Yeah I think so
[00:53:51] Okay well so he you know
[00:53:53] He gets clearance for Utah
[00:53:55] He does all the hijinks in Utah
[00:53:57] He gets some pictures that
[00:53:59] Clearly are showing him
[00:54:01] That whatever you know
[00:54:04] Again it's like it's already getting confusing
[00:54:06] I'm trying to explain it
[00:54:08] It's like a basically he's got
[00:54:10] Evidence that Stanwick
[00:54:12] Who's claiming that he's invested all this money
[00:54:14] Into this real estate
[00:54:16] He hasn't really it's only worth like
[00:54:18] $3,000
[00:54:20] I also skipped over the part where he goes
[00:54:22] To the
[00:54:24] Aviation
[00:54:26] Or like the airport
[00:54:28] And like has the
[00:54:30] Band-aid around his nose
[00:54:32] Now this is we were talking about this earlier
[00:54:34] Probably this is what we were alluding to
[00:54:36] This is Chevy's biggest disguise
[00:54:38] Probably right he's got the fake teeth
[00:54:40] He's got like a hair piece
[00:54:42] This is him and his most SNL
[00:54:44] Yeah well there too
[00:54:46] There's the broken nose guy
[00:54:48] And then there's the like sort of
[00:54:50] Hick airplane
[00:54:52] You get two back to back that are kind of bigger
[00:54:54] Right
[00:54:56] The airplane repair guy he interacts with
[00:54:58] One of my absolute favorite character actors of all time
[00:55:00] One of the two repair guys is
[00:55:02] Burton Gilliam
[00:55:04] Who is also from Blazing Saddles
[00:55:06] He plays like Slim Pickens right hand man
[00:55:08] This movie was written by Andrew Bergman
[00:55:10] Who wrote Blazing Saddle
[00:55:12] Very interesting
[00:55:14] And he also is in Paper Moon
[00:55:16] He plays like the bellhop at the hotel
[00:55:18] Oh I love that movie
[00:55:20] He's like a great fucking character actor
[00:55:22] He's the one who's got kind of like a real leathery face
[00:55:24] And a big wide grin and he's the fucking best
[00:55:26] But you get another
[00:55:28] It's Chevy
[00:55:30] It's flesh let me show my proper respect
[00:55:32] Trying to pretend that he is an airplane repairman himself
[00:55:34] People going like you want to check this
[00:55:36] Then he checks the luggage and gets defense
[00:55:38] That they can't catch him in a lie
[00:55:40] But then you got the great lines
[00:55:42] Where he goes like what do you need to fix this
[00:55:44] And he goes like get some cable and
[00:55:46] 20 medium gauge ball bearings
[00:55:48] It's all ball bearings now boys
[00:55:50] Yeah don't you know it's all ball bearings now
[00:55:52] Yeah it's a good moment
[00:55:54] So really all the stuff that happens in Utah
[00:55:56] You've got him figuring out
[00:55:58] The property in Utah
[00:56:00] Then he checks into the property
[00:56:02] It's worth nothing
[00:56:04] Then he finds out by going to the plane
[00:56:06] And he figures out that
[00:56:08] Going back and forth from LA to Utah
[00:56:10] Supposedly he's actually flying to South America
[00:56:12] Can I throw out one more line I really like
[00:56:14] Please
[00:56:15] When he goes into the house
[00:56:16] And then the guy comes at him with the shotgun
[00:56:18] Oh yeah
[00:56:19] And he's like what are you doing here
[00:56:20] And he's like the door is open
[00:56:21] And he goes the lock was busted
[00:56:22] And he goes yeah so you see what I mean
[00:56:30] It's hard to encapsulate how
[00:56:32] How good those scenes are
[00:56:34] Like just Chevy really does have this
[00:56:36] Like great skill at those little
[00:56:38] Back and forth moments
[00:56:39] That's why I mean I think
[00:56:40] It's why the movie works
[00:56:41] I'm not even trying to impersonate his delivery
[00:56:43] No you can't
[00:56:44] Because it can't I'm just reciting the lines
[00:56:46] Because the lines are really good
[00:56:47] Good lines but he really
[00:56:48] This is his best performance ever
[00:56:49] Yeah it really is
[00:56:50] Yeah there's not even really much
[00:56:52] Competition for that right
[00:56:53] No it's his medius performance
[00:56:54] It's like the sort of most full meal
[00:56:57] Like Chevy roll yeah
[00:56:58] So I'm kind of jumping around
[00:57:00] With stairs but I mean
[00:57:01] No no I mean the plot eventually kind of gets
[00:57:03] You get the sense that basically
[00:57:05] This guy Stan Wickies
[00:57:07] Somehow connected to this drug
[00:57:09] Ring that's happening at the beach
[00:57:11] Well you got the thing with the police commissioner
[00:57:13] Right so that's what we're going to go to now
[00:57:15] Okay
[00:57:16] So Fletch okay
[00:57:18] Fletch
[00:57:19] The chief sorry the chief of police
[00:57:21] His first interaction with the cops
[00:57:24] Is you've got a very young
[00:57:26] Uncle Phil
[00:57:27] Yeah
[00:57:29] Kevin Avery from Family Meals
[00:57:31] Oh sure yeah
[00:57:32] They plant heroin
[00:57:33] Or I'm sorry no from Fresh Prince of Bel Air
[00:57:35] Yeah James Avery
[00:57:37] Yes I said Kevin Avery
[00:57:39] He was a comedian
[00:57:40] I'm messing up every name of everything
[00:57:42] Also James Avery also
[00:57:44] A voice of Shredder on Tangerine Ninja Turtles
[00:57:47] Oh I didn't know that
[00:57:48] I believe he's now
[00:57:49] Deceased
[00:57:50] Rest in peace
[00:57:51] Yeah he's now a dead man
[00:57:52] Oh man
[00:57:53] Was Shredder now dead
[00:57:54] Yeah great great guy
[00:57:55] So this is you know we're back in LA
[00:57:58] Fletch gets planted with some heroin
[00:58:01] He gets brought in to see the chief
[00:58:03] Played by Jodan Baker
[00:58:05] The chief is a bad guy
[00:58:07] Second build in the film
[00:58:10] Yeah big acting
[00:58:11] So yeah cause Jodan Baker had been
[00:58:15] No he's a bond villain two years later
[00:58:18] In the living day life
[00:58:19] Okay
[00:58:20] He just sort of been around anyway go on
[00:58:22] He'd just been around
[00:58:23] He was in the natural last year before yeah
[00:58:25] And so alright so I mean it's similar to like
[00:58:28] You know Big Lebowski
[00:58:29] It's just like you know the
[00:58:31] They bring in the
[00:58:33] You know the guy who's fucking everything up
[00:58:35] To see the chief right and the chief is basically
[00:58:38] Get your nose out of this
[00:58:39] Get your nose out of this
[00:58:40] You know we know you're Jane Doe
[00:58:42] But at the same time what's really clear
[00:58:44] Is that he's kind of giving too much information
[00:58:47] Like you can tell like right away
[00:58:49] That there's something shady about this chief
[00:58:51] And Fletch's nose is twitching
[00:58:53] Cause he smells a story
[00:58:55] And Fletch also doesn't like
[00:58:57] The establishment and he's like fuck this guy
[00:59:00] Right and he's throwing lines at him
[00:59:02] And then so they go and they bring him into a jail cell
[00:59:05] And this I think is a really cool scene right
[00:59:08] Because it really is
[00:59:09] The stakes all of a sudden
[00:59:10] The stakes are very high
[00:59:11] Get really high and he's like genuinely scared
[00:59:13] That this guy's gonna murder him
[00:59:15] Yeah it's this thing where he's just like
[00:59:16] You know what I'm probably just gonna shoot you
[00:59:17] Take this knife stab myself in the arm with it
[00:59:20] Plant it on your body
[00:59:21] Kill you
[00:59:22] That's what I'm gonna do
[00:59:23] Like he's very calm about it
[00:59:25] He's not even like worked up
[00:59:26] He's just like you know what
[00:59:27] Yeah might as well just do that
[00:59:29] And Fletch is like are you serious
[00:59:30] He goes yeah ask anybody
[00:59:31] Yeah and it makes him really terrifying
[00:59:33] Cause it's like yeah that's my reputation
[00:59:34] Fucking ask anybody I do this all the time
[00:59:37] And Fletch is like you shouldn't
[00:59:38] You wouldn't kill like a newspaper reporter
[00:59:40] Which he's like
[00:59:43] And it should
[00:59:44] It like maybe shouldn't work
[00:59:46] Because it is kind of a ludicrous moment
[00:59:48] In a way
[00:59:49] But
[00:59:50] You know
[00:59:51] Joe Don Baker sells it
[00:59:52] He's really scary
[00:59:53] In that one little moment
[00:59:54] Chevy Chase sells the fear
[00:59:56] And he's president as an actor
[00:59:57] He's reacting
[00:59:58] He's not mugging
[00:59:59] He's like fucking
[01:00:00] He's in the moment
[01:00:01] Yeah it's good
[01:00:02] And so he gives chief the beach
[01:00:04] He says he will not go there anymore
[01:00:06] He's not gonna continue this investigation
[01:00:08] He's not you know
[01:00:09] You put a gun to my head
[01:00:10] And threaten to kill me
[01:00:11] Okay I'm out
[01:00:12] Off the beef
[01:00:13] Now I mean I think I skipped over
[01:00:15] One part where like you know
[01:00:16] He's kind of going back and forth
[01:00:18] Between the office as well
[01:00:19] Right
[01:00:23] Where of course his boss doesn't believe him
[01:00:26] That he was like threatened by this cop
[01:00:28] And why would he
[01:00:29] He's flush
[01:00:30] He's throwing bullshit left and right
[01:00:31] Right he's just
[01:00:32] He's always thrown you know it's like
[01:00:34] You know
[01:00:35] I scream I cry wolf
[01:00:37] Right yeah and then Fletcher's going
[01:00:39] Like get a gun to my head
[01:00:40] And he's like oh no
[01:00:41] A gun I can't believe that
[01:00:42] Like his response to everything
[01:00:43] It's a good scene too
[01:00:44] Where he's basically
[01:00:45] And Fletcher's like you don't believe me
[01:00:46] He's like no
[01:00:47] No I don't believe you
[01:00:48] The great Richard Libertini
[01:00:50] But Gina Davis believes
[01:00:51] Now she believes
[01:00:52] I skipped over this
[01:00:53] But I don't want to forget this little
[01:00:54] Physical moment
[01:00:55] There's a part where you cut to them
[01:00:57] Looking at some micro-fiche
[01:00:58] Which again
[01:00:59] Oh my god
[01:01:00] Micro-fiche
[01:01:01] This is such a good gag too
[01:01:02] And so he goes
[01:01:03] And it's just
[01:01:04] You see the cameras looking at what
[01:01:05] They're looking and it's
[01:01:06] So they're trying to center
[01:01:07] The image
[01:01:08] Little bit to the right
[01:01:09] Little bit to the left
[01:01:10] You get a wider shot
[01:01:12] She's scratching Fletcher's back
[01:01:14] Yeah
[01:01:15] That's a fun joke
[01:01:16] Yep
[01:01:17] I love it
[01:01:18] It's a good joke
[01:01:19] But we're just
[01:01:20] We're powering through this
[01:01:21] I'm sorry
[01:01:22] I don't remember if it comes before or after this
[01:01:23] But it's the one with the lamp
[01:01:25] Oh yes
[01:01:26] The ceiling lamp
[01:01:27] Wait what?
[01:01:28] Yeah
[01:01:29] That's when he is
[01:01:30] Like the chandelier
[01:01:31] He's in the house
[01:01:32] And there's the chandelier
[01:01:33] That's like a bunch of different like domes
[01:01:35] Okay
[01:01:36] And he walks into it
[01:01:37] And one like lands perfectly on his head
[01:01:39] Oh yes
[01:01:40] And then he tries to get out of
[01:01:41] Like the other ones
[01:01:42] It's just a really good
[01:01:43] Like Chevy
[01:01:44] Fucking accidental physical business
[01:01:45] But
[01:01:46] The most incredible
[01:01:47] Physi-median
[01:01:48] I mean
[01:01:49] It's pretty remarkable
[01:01:50] That he's in the community
[01:01:51] Whenever they would let him do that
[01:01:52] Like all the way to that
[01:01:53] Right
[01:01:54] Do you remember that scene in community
[01:01:55] Where he's like surrounded by keyboards
[01:01:57] Yes
[01:01:58] And he's trying to get out
[01:01:59] And he can't
[01:02:00] He just can do wonders
[01:02:02] With very little
[01:02:03] What's amazing is on community
[01:02:04] Even when we watched
[01:02:05] Like the last couple of times
[01:02:06] He's been on SNL
[01:02:07] He can barely move
[01:02:08] Yeah he's not
[01:02:09] Right
[01:02:10] In scenes where he's just supposed
[01:02:11] To be sitting at a table
[01:02:12] Talking to people
[01:02:13] He can't move naturally
[01:02:14] But he still can do
[01:02:15] Like the pratfalls
[01:02:16] Yeah
[01:02:17] It's amazing
[01:02:18] So okay
[01:02:19] So where we left off is
[01:02:21] Threatened by the chief
[01:02:23] Okay
[01:02:24] So he's gonna though
[01:02:25] He's gonna like then
[01:02:26] Go back to the clubhouse
[01:02:28] And see this wife
[01:02:30] Sure Dana Wheeler Nicholson
[01:02:31] Now he's got all this evidence
[01:02:32] To present to her
[01:02:33] It's like saying her name
[01:02:34] I think he's also got
[01:02:35] A bit of a crush on her
[01:02:36] He does have a bit of a crush
[01:02:37] She's pretty cute
[01:02:38] Yeah
[01:02:39] And you know
[01:02:40] Clearly a divorced guy
[01:02:41] You know
[01:02:42] Pretty lonely
[01:02:43] Bachelor pad
[01:02:44] Yeah and she's married
[01:02:45] But he also knows
[01:02:46] To a scumbag
[01:02:47] To a real scumbag
[01:02:48] And he's got a lot to see
[01:02:49] His real wife
[01:02:50] Yeah
[01:02:51] Well he doesn't know that yet
[01:02:52] Spoiler alert
[01:02:53] He's got another wife
[01:02:54] Something fishy
[01:02:55] And now
[01:02:56] He's got a picture of
[01:02:58] The other wife
[01:03:00] Right
[01:03:01] And like
[01:03:02] Oh so we have gotten to that scene
[01:03:03] Where he goes back home
[01:03:04] Meet the parents
[01:03:05] Cause he's like jumping around
[01:03:06] So much
[01:03:07] It's like kind of hard
[01:03:08] It's like hard to kind of
[01:03:09] Get that across
[01:03:10] But it's just like
[01:03:11] In Utah
[01:03:12] There's like four moments
[01:03:13] It's like him going to
[01:03:14] The airport
[01:03:15] Then him going to
[01:03:16] The realtor
[01:03:17] And then going to the house
[01:03:18] To find that it's like bogus
[01:03:20] And then finally seeing the parents
[01:03:22] And confirming that he is
[01:03:24] Married to a Utah woman
[01:03:25] Different woman is a big amist
[01:03:27] Right
[01:03:28] Yeah it's a little
[01:03:29] It's a little all over the place
[01:03:30] But that's all you really need to know
[01:03:31] But also it goes down
[01:03:33] Smoother the second time
[01:03:34] It does
[01:03:35] It really does
[01:03:36] Yeah
[01:03:37] And it's also
[01:03:38] It's this tapestry for which
[01:03:39] Chevy Chase to be Chevy Chase
[01:03:41] Let's Chevy be Chevy
[01:03:42] That's right
[01:03:43] So I mean sure
[01:03:44] It's a lot of Chevy Chase
[01:03:45] But I'm okay with that
[01:03:46] But that's the thing
[01:03:47] So the gale of Beverly Hills
[01:03:50] Dana Wheeler Nicholson gale
[01:03:51] She's rich
[01:03:52] She's been writing the checks
[01:03:54] And that's the whole flimflam
[01:03:56] Which I, a word I try to use on every podcast
[01:03:58] That he's deploying here
[01:04:00] Tim Matheson's flimflam
[01:04:02] The classic Matheson flimflam
[01:04:04] The classic Matheson flimflam
[01:04:05] Is you know
[01:04:06] Married to Utah lady
[01:04:08] Playing both sides
[01:04:10] Been on the side
[01:04:11] Married to Beverly Hills lady
[01:04:13] She's underwriting the whole brigade
[01:04:15] Yep
[01:04:16] That's no good
[01:04:18] I just did a like swoop
[01:04:19] With the hand
[01:04:20] You did
[01:04:21] I did
[01:04:22] Okay
[01:04:23] The old MFF
[01:04:24] Well after the Provo visit
[01:04:26] We geared up towards
[01:04:27] The sort of the drawing room reveal
[01:04:30] The big mystery you know
[01:04:31] Solved right
[01:04:32] The showdown
[01:04:33] Yes
[01:04:34] Yes
[01:04:35] Well I mean we're missing a big scene
[01:04:36] Which is
[01:04:37] Goes back to
[01:04:38] Of course
[01:04:39] The romantic scene
[01:04:40] Goes back to the clubhouse
[01:04:42] He orders a big
[01:04:43] $400 launch
[01:04:44] Oh and of course
[01:04:45] He gets Mr. Underhill back
[01:04:46] Right I forgot about that
[01:04:47] Yep
[01:04:48] He orders two lobster humidors
[01:04:50] Champagnes
[01:04:51] A bottle of Dom
[01:04:52] I believe a bottle
[01:04:53] Two bottles of Dom
[01:04:54] Two bottles of Dom
[01:04:55] Two orders of very expensive caviar
[01:04:57] And every time
[01:04:58] He could blue the caviar
[01:04:59] And he goes
[01:05:00] That's $70
[01:05:01] He goes
[01:05:02] Well thank you for telling me that
[01:05:03] I guess I'll only order two
[01:05:04] And then
[01:05:05] And then
[01:05:06] And then
[01:05:07] And then
[01:05:08] Every time he has an interaction
[01:05:09] With one of the waiters
[01:05:10] He goes
[01:05:11] You know what
[01:05:12] Take $30 out of that for yourself
[01:05:13] Like he keeps on giving them really nice tips
[01:05:15] Because he likes the little guy
[01:05:17] Yeah
[01:05:18] It's almost annoying that it's only a $400 tab
[01:05:20] It feels like I really wanted it to inflate
[01:05:22] To sort of cosmic proportion
[01:05:23] Yeah
[01:05:24] So he's
[01:05:25] Confronting now
[01:05:26] Beverly Hills White
[01:05:27] Right
[01:05:28] To let her know what's up
[01:05:29] And so you know
[01:05:30] He's like Alan
[01:05:31] He's a bad guy
[01:05:32] Okay
[01:05:33] He's married to this woman
[01:05:35] But I need you
[01:05:36] You can't tell anybody yet
[01:05:38] Okay
[01:05:39] Because I think
[01:05:40] He's involved in something bigger
[01:05:41] I'm not sure what
[01:05:42] I just need you to keep your mouth shut
[01:05:44] Okay
[01:05:45] Yeah
[01:05:46] She's like
[01:05:47] How can I do this
[01:05:48] What, you're crazy
[01:05:49] But for whatever reason
[01:05:50] Because it's a movie
[01:05:51] She's on board
[01:05:52] She's on board
[01:05:53] And then he like sort of
[01:05:54] He, I forget what the line is
[01:05:55] But he throws some sort of pick up at her
[01:05:57] And she's like
[01:05:58] That's a really good time
[01:05:59] To make a pass at me
[01:06:01] Like it's another scene that I like
[01:06:03] Like in the same way that Gina Davis laughs
[01:06:05] At his jokes in the office
[01:06:06] Where it's like
[01:06:07] He's incorrigible
[01:06:08] And the characters are acknowledging like
[01:06:10] The bit that you're doing
[01:06:11] But also like
[01:06:12] Yeah, at this point you're a more
[01:06:14] Stand-up guy than my husband
[01:06:16] Like this might work
[01:06:17] Right
[01:06:18] You know she's calling him out on his thing
[01:06:19] And then the underhills get the check
[01:06:21] It's $400
[01:06:22] They're like who the fuck is this
[01:06:23] Bungalow one
[01:06:24] They run over there
[01:06:25] They knock in the door
[01:06:26] Fletch is trying to slip out through the bathroom
[01:06:27] And he's like just trust me
[01:06:28] And she gives him
[01:06:30] One of her husband's suits
[01:06:32] Yep
[01:06:33] And mentions that you guys are similar builds
[01:06:36] Yeah
[01:06:37] This is a clue
[01:06:38] This is a clue
[01:06:39] A key detail
[01:06:40] To keep in mind
[01:06:41] Now we're just kind of jumping around
[01:06:43] Because we want to just get through the plot
[01:06:45] Right
[01:06:46] So there's a great chase scene
[01:06:47] I think it's super funny
[01:06:49] It's like very silly
[01:06:50] It then leads to him going into like
[01:06:53] What would you say like a
[01:06:55] Underpass
[01:06:56] No no
[01:06:57] The like meeting
[01:06:58] Of like the older people
[01:07:00] Oh yeah
[01:07:02] Like a I don't know
[01:07:03] Okay
[01:07:04] Oh yeah well this is a long chase scene
[01:07:05] It's a really long chase scene
[01:07:06] It's a really stupid
[01:07:07] You do have a car for like a teenager with braces
[01:07:08] And he goes like do you have a license
[01:07:10] And he's like no I don't know
[01:07:11] I would also say that like poppy synth music
[01:07:14] Starts to be less effective around here
[01:07:16] It starts to get a little annoying
[01:07:18] And it's just because I think the footage they had
[01:07:20] Was kind of just boring
[01:07:21] Yeah the action is not too interesting
[01:07:24] That's sort of the difference between a movie like Fletch
[01:07:26] And a movie like The Nice Guys
[01:07:27] The Nice Guys has like kind of
[01:07:29] High octane crazy action
[01:07:31] And I would argue Midnight Run too
[01:07:32] I mean yeah they're
[01:07:33] Of course
[01:07:34] This movie the action is very perfect
[01:07:35] The action is very perfunctious
[01:07:36] Yeah but it's really just
[01:07:37] It's only really this one sequence
[01:07:38] Yeah it's really just like
[01:07:39] Let's have something happen
[01:07:40] And so whatever he kind of gets out of it
[01:07:42] Right he just using his like bullshitting skills
[01:07:45] Yeah yeah he's flat
[01:07:46] He never did that before
[01:07:48] Anyway but let's go on to the showdown
[01:07:51] Showdown
[01:07:52] But does he go to the beach?
[01:07:53] Because the final beach scene is important too
[01:07:55] Right
[01:07:56] He goes to the beach looking like sort of a vagabond
[01:07:58] With a long beard
[01:07:59] Bald cap
[01:08:00] Yeah right
[01:08:01] And he finds Gummi
[01:08:02] And he's like
[01:08:03] Gummi played by Larry Flashjanken
[01:08:05] An amazing name
[01:08:06] Yeah quite an name
[01:08:07] He goes to Gummi and acts like
[01:08:09] He's pieced it all together and confirmed it
[01:08:11] Right
[01:08:12] And in the process gets him to confirm his suspicions
[01:08:14] And is like so you're running the drugs
[01:08:16] And he's like I'm not
[01:08:17] I just carried them
[01:08:18] I'm not selling
[01:08:19] So Chief Carlin
[01:08:20] Right
[01:08:21] So then he goes to Fat Jimmy
[01:08:23] Or whatever his name is
[01:08:24] George Wendt
[01:08:25] Cajun George Wendt
[01:08:26] And is like
[01:08:27] Hey Gummi told me everything
[01:08:28] I know what's the chief
[01:08:29] What's going on here
[01:08:30] And he goes look
[01:08:31] They abreasted me
[01:08:32] And said I was either going to serve time
[01:08:34] Or I had to sell the drugs for him
[01:08:36] And he goes are you getting a cut of the action
[01:08:37] He goes no it's all going up to the chief
[01:08:39] I'm just getting some stuff
[01:08:40] I'm getting my fix that's it
[01:08:42] So then he's got the two of them
[01:08:43] He brings them back to the office
[01:08:45] The editor is like what the fuck is going on
[01:08:47] Why do I got Fat Jimmy and Gummi
[01:08:50] In my fucking office
[01:08:51] And he's like
[01:08:52] I'm really close to breaking this story
[01:08:54] And there's like Fletcher fired
[01:08:57] Yeah he fires him
[01:08:58] Yeah
[01:08:59] I want to say something about Larry Flashjanken
[01:09:00] That I just found out
[01:09:01] Yeah
[01:09:02] The first African American actor
[01:09:04] To star in a TV series
[01:09:06] On each of the big three networks
[01:09:08] He was in the White Shadow on CBS
[01:09:10] He was in Bay City Blues on NBC
[01:09:13] And he was in Finder of Lost Loves on ABC
[01:09:16] That was a milestone
[01:09:18] Congrats to Larry Flashjanken
[01:09:19] And we're talking regular
[01:09:20] Yeah no that's an amazing career
[01:09:22] Now Finder of Lost Loves
[01:09:23] I've literally never heard of
[01:09:24] But check out this promo image
[01:09:27] Boy oh boy the 80s
[01:09:28] Is that Delta Burke
[01:09:32] It is not
[01:09:34] I've never heard of any of these people
[01:09:35] But anyway he was fourth billed at that day
[01:09:37] Okay
[01:09:38] Alright so
[01:09:39] We're getting to the final big scene
[01:09:42] Of the film okay
[01:09:43] He's figured it out right
[01:09:45] He knows that Alan Stanwyck
[01:09:47] Right is flying in the drugs
[01:09:49] The chief is then bringing them to Gummi
[01:09:51] Who then is delivering them the fat Sam
[01:09:54] And then you know selling the drugs from there
[01:09:56] And that's that
[01:09:57] This has all been revealed
[01:09:59] But also he still has to live up
[01:10:01] To the initial agreement
[01:10:04] The clock is up
[01:10:05] He's got to murder this guy
[01:10:06] He's got to go murder this guy
[01:10:08] But he's made an agreement
[01:10:09] He's said that this is the time and the place to murder
[01:10:11] So he goes back to his house
[01:10:13] Wearing the suit
[01:10:14] I love that this scene visually
[01:10:15] Is a reversal of the opening scene
[01:10:17] Because Matheson is now in the
[01:10:19] Tattered Mad Johnson jersey
[01:10:21] And Fletch is the one behind the desk
[01:10:23] And Matheson is the one who's sort of
[01:10:25] Like slacking back
[01:10:26] Fletch has figured it out
[01:10:28] He knows what's happening
[01:10:29] All out
[01:10:30] Now as they start
[01:10:32] You know kind of like
[01:10:33] I'm gonna explain my whole plan
[01:10:35] I'm gonna explain my plan
[01:10:37] That whole thing
[01:10:38] Then you know
[01:10:39] Gayle, Beverly Hills Gayle shows up
[01:10:41] Yeah
[01:10:42] Alright so now Alan knows that he's fucked
[01:10:44] Right
[01:10:45] And Gayle says I already know most of it
[01:10:46] I just want to hear you say it
[01:10:48] Yeah that's good
[01:10:49] His plan is to kill Chevy
[01:10:51] Right
[01:10:52] And burn his body
[01:10:53] Basically to reverse what his proposal was
[01:10:56] And then like fake his death
[01:10:58] And flee
[01:10:59] Get away
[01:11:00] With his Utah wife
[01:11:01] And go to Brazil with the three million dollars
[01:11:03] Damn
[01:11:04] Yeah
[01:11:05] This is 85, 3 million Brazil
[01:11:06] You're set
[01:11:07] Yeah
[01:11:09] Okay so
[01:11:11] He um
[01:11:12] You know the
[01:11:14] Beverly Hills wife shows up
[01:11:17] And there's a great line where she
[01:11:19] You know she says
[01:11:20] I just want to see it for myself
[01:11:21] And he goes it's funny
[01:11:22] There's something your wife said to me
[01:11:23] While we were in bed
[01:11:24] Yup
[01:11:25] Right that fun little moment
[01:11:26] That's a good moment
[01:11:27] And then there's a visual thing
[01:11:28] Where Matheson looks over to the wife
[01:11:30] She's like
[01:11:31] She like nods
[01:11:32] And Matheson just sort of takes it in
[01:11:33] And he can't really fight it
[01:11:34] Cause it's like
[01:11:35] Why two wives
[01:11:36] I mean yeah
[01:11:37] Yeah
[01:11:38] Not really going to stick up for myself
[01:11:39] In this scenario
[01:11:40] Yeah what am I going to say
[01:11:41] You've dishonored me
[01:11:43] What am I
[01:11:44] Yeah
[01:11:45] Uh
[01:11:46] But yes
[01:11:47] And it's because
[01:11:48] You know
[01:11:49] He realized they had similar bills
[01:11:50] You're going to burn me up
[01:11:51] You know like
[01:11:52] You're going to reverse the plot
[01:11:53] Like we were saying
[01:11:54] But then
[01:11:55] Guess who also shows up
[01:11:57] The chief
[01:11:58] Joe Don
[01:11:59] You're forgetting a good detail too
[01:12:00] What's that
[01:12:01] Lech has a secret weapon
[01:12:03] A letter
[01:12:04] Oh yes
[01:12:05] Because Lech is a man of letters
[01:12:07] And he knows
[01:12:08] That the pen is mightier than the sword
[01:12:10] Yeah he's written a letter saying
[01:12:12] If I don't
[01:12:13] You know
[01:12:14] He's basically it's like
[01:12:15] If I die tonight
[01:12:16] This letter gets mailed
[01:12:17] Yeah and it's published
[01:12:18] As the final Jane Doe piece
[01:12:19] And it explains everything
[01:12:20] That he's just cracked
[01:12:21] Now Matheson has a good counter to this
[01:12:23] I'll be in Brazil
[01:12:24] Yeah
[01:12:25] Who fucking cares
[01:12:26] Yeah
[01:12:27] I'll be sitting on the beach
[01:12:28] When the you know
[01:12:29] First edition comes out
[01:12:31] With 3 million Brazil
[01:12:32] And he says
[01:12:33] I heard their extradition
[01:12:34] Extradition process is very difficult for murder
[01:12:36] I assume it's even more difficult for
[01:12:38] Double murder
[01:12:39] And it's like
[01:12:40] Oh shit he might kill both of them
[01:12:41] He might have to
[01:12:42] And then the chief fucking
[01:12:43] Bloss through like
[01:12:44] The Kool-Aid man
[01:12:45] That's right
[01:12:46] And he's like
[01:12:47] I think I overheard something about
[01:12:48] Extradition
[01:12:49] Right
[01:12:50] He starts figuring out
[01:12:51] He's going to get the
[01:12:52] It's all going to fall on his lap
[01:12:54] He's like fuck the way
[01:12:55] You think you're going Matheson
[01:12:57] Yeah
[01:12:58] Shoots that motherfucker
[01:12:59] Dead
[01:13:00] He shoots him just
[01:13:01] Like out of nowhere almost
[01:13:02] It's kind of brutal
[01:13:03] It is
[01:13:04] He shoots Matheson dead
[01:13:05] I mean listen up
[01:13:06] That's how you get second bill
[01:13:07] That's yeah it's true
[01:13:08] Joe Don is like
[01:13:09] Yeah you were wondering why I'm second bill
[01:13:11] Bam
[01:13:12] Because Matheson was going to be too
[01:13:14] And then Joe Don shot him
[01:13:15] Yeah he gets the end
[01:13:17] He gets the end
[01:13:18] And so uh oh
[01:13:19] Is Flesch going to make it
[01:13:21] I'm not sure if he is
[01:13:22] I don't need anything
[01:13:23] I'm a little nervous
[01:13:24] I'm worried
[01:13:25] But then
[01:13:26] I think he's going to make it
[01:13:27] I'm real scared
[01:13:28] You know he's crafty
[01:13:29] He's always looking around
[01:13:30] He's always trying to figure out
[01:13:31] Ben's making an end gesture right now
[01:13:32] Making a finger gesture
[01:13:33] He's smacking together his thumb
[01:13:35] And his two center fingers
[01:13:37] His middle and his ring finger
[01:13:39] And he notices
[01:13:40] Well there's a fireplace
[01:13:41] Uh uh gauge to turn the gas on
[01:13:43] Turns that fucker up
[01:13:44] Yeah
[01:13:45] Boom big fucking flame
[01:13:47] Right in Chief's face
[01:13:48] Yeah
[01:13:49] Knocks him out
[01:13:50] Gets the gun
[01:13:51] Girl though
[01:13:52] Is the one that gives the final blow
[01:13:54] With a tennis racket
[01:13:55] Yeah she knocks out Joe Don
[01:13:56] With a tennis racket
[01:13:57] He showed her how to serve
[01:13:59] That's right
[01:14:00] At the country club
[01:14:01] Bam it all comes together
[01:14:02] It all comes full circle
[01:14:03] I love it when a plan comes together
[01:14:05] Flesch says that right
[01:14:06] Yeah I love it when a Flesch comes together
[01:14:07] The plan says that right
[01:14:09] And so in the end
[01:14:11] The Chief is busted
[01:14:13] Flesch is the big hero
[01:14:15] Because he published this great piece
[01:14:17] That probably got picked up
[01:14:18] By a bunch of different papers nationally
[01:14:20] But what else does he say to his boss?
[01:14:21] I quit
[01:14:22] He quits
[01:14:23] Fuck you you didn't believe in me
[01:14:25] He didn't believe in him
[01:14:26] Well Flesch I mean of course
[01:14:27] I mean come on
[01:14:28] I was just giving you a hard time
[01:14:30] I'm out of here
[01:14:31] He also has a big stack
[01:14:33] Of things he wants to write off
[01:14:34] Yeah
[01:14:35] I like that too
[01:14:36] That's like wigs
[01:14:37] Yeah wigs and fake teeth and stuff
[01:14:39] Plain tickets
[01:14:40] And he also gets his final blow
[01:14:42] And as he's like
[01:14:43] Writing up his final piece
[01:14:44] Pulls a chair out
[01:14:46] From the secretary
[01:14:47] Oh yeah
[01:14:48] So she sits on the fucking floor
[01:14:49] She falls down
[01:14:51] But Flesch hates phonies
[01:14:53] And he knows that when the chips were down
[01:14:55] His editor didn't believe in him
[01:14:58] He's got
[01:14:59] He can pick his own editor now
[01:15:01] Yeah
[01:15:02] You know
[01:15:03] He's fucking Flesch man
[01:15:04] Maybe he'll go to the Sacramento Bee
[01:15:05] Don't call him Irwin
[01:15:06] He's Flesch
[01:15:07] Right
[01:15:08] Do you know that his
[01:15:09] I don't know if they say
[01:15:10] In the film
[01:15:11] But in the books it's like
[01:15:12] A big running joke
[01:15:13] His name is like Irwin M. Flesch
[01:15:15] So his initials are I.M. Flesch
[01:15:16] Yeah
[01:15:17] They do mention that once in the movie
[01:15:19] Yeah
[01:15:20] Fletcher
[01:15:21] And so in the end
[01:15:22] He takes the plane tickets
[01:15:24] That were purchased in cash
[01:15:26] With you know
[01:15:27] Like drug money cash
[01:15:28] Someone's gotta use them
[01:15:29] But somebody's gotta use them
[01:15:30] And so he convinces
[01:15:32] Beverly Hills Gale
[01:15:34] To go and take a flight with him
[01:15:37] And then you've got a great little
[01:15:41] Unnecessary scene of them walking on the beach
[01:15:44] With some really dumb voice over
[01:15:45] And he's trying to sell her on the Lakers
[01:15:47] Right
[01:15:48] And he's trying to sell her on the Lakers
[01:15:49] She doesn't know anything about basketball
[01:15:50] I mean she's expressing a lot of my opinions
[01:15:52] On basketball
[01:15:53] Which is like
[01:15:54] Don't you think it's childish
[01:15:55] That they have to dribble the ball up
[01:15:56] And or like bounce the ball up and down
[01:15:57] He goes it's dribbling
[01:15:58] It's dribbling come on
[01:15:59] But there's the voice over that hasn't been there
[01:16:01] Since the beginning of the film
[01:16:02] And what's the final
[01:16:03] It pops in one time
[01:16:05] In the middle of the movie
[01:16:06] Really?
[01:16:07] It's very jarring
[01:16:08] What's the final joke of the movie
[01:16:09] So the final joke of the movie is
[01:16:10] She really doesn't grasp basketball
[01:16:13] But we have our own version of one on one
[01:16:16] She thinks I'm the bravest man
[01:16:18] There is
[01:16:19] Yeah
[01:16:20] Which is
[01:16:21] They're talking about banging
[01:16:22] Right
[01:16:23] And then he goes
[01:16:24] Also I charge the whole
[01:16:25] A trip to
[01:16:27] Mr. Underhill's American Express
[01:16:29] Do you want the number?
[01:16:30] Bit by bit
[01:16:32] Bit by bit
[01:16:34] Bit by bit
[01:16:35] That's great
[01:16:36] I mean Fletch
[01:16:37] Fucking
[01:16:38] Sticks the landing
[01:16:39] We should say
[01:16:40] Then the closing credits
[01:16:41] In Sioux
[01:16:42] And it's just freeze frames
[01:16:43] Of like the best parts of the movie
[01:16:45] Basically
[01:16:46] Like while the credits play over them
[01:16:47] But they're just close ups of Fletch
[01:16:48] Yeah it's just Chevy Chase's
[01:16:49] Fucking shit eating grin
[01:16:51] It's like you forgot how much
[01:16:52] You liked Fletch
[01:16:53] They're gonna show you some pictures
[01:16:54] Of Fletch
[01:16:57] Well there's the joke earlier
[01:16:58] In the movie where the parents
[01:17:00] Stamwicks parents try to show him
[01:17:03] Their photo album
[01:17:04] Cause he wants the one picture
[01:17:06] Of him with the wife
[01:17:07] And he goes do you want to see
[01:17:08] Some more from the reception
[01:17:09] He goes no I'm trying to quit
[01:17:11] And then this
[01:17:12] And the credit sequence feels
[01:17:13] Like a photo album
[01:17:14] Of Fletch
[01:17:15] Of like Fletch is fine this moment
[01:17:17] That's true
[01:17:18] Yeah
[01:17:20] Fletch is a great guy
[01:17:22] I mean I
[01:17:23] Yeah this is
[01:17:25] I'm so glad that we did this
[01:17:26] This is so ridiculous
[01:17:28] But it's also like
[01:17:29] This is not the kind of film
[01:17:30] We've really covered yet
[01:17:31] Well this is the thing
[01:17:32] It's fun to talk about these things
[01:17:33] And it is kind of fun
[01:17:34] What we like about him
[01:17:35] I would say like
[01:17:36] This one plot wise
[01:17:37] Is pretty convoluted
[01:17:38] Like I think we did
[01:17:39] Some you know justice
[01:17:40] Without really getting into it
[01:17:42] Like you know
[01:17:43] It's got a lot of business
[01:17:44] It's got a lot of moving around
[01:17:45] But overall
[01:17:46] I mean come on guys
[01:17:47] It's Chevy Chase
[01:17:48] And it's like fun
[01:17:50] And it's like a detective movie
[01:17:52] Like it's got
[01:17:53] It's got fucking
[01:17:55] Card catalogs
[01:17:56] It's got micro fish
[01:17:58] Alright it's got disguises
[01:18:01] I can't sell you enough on this
[01:18:02] Yeah I
[01:18:03] I don't need to be sold
[01:18:04] Cause I've already bought in
[01:18:06] I'm a Fletch fan baby
[01:18:07] I really liked Fletch
[01:18:09] I really liked Fletch
[01:18:11] I could see it being the kind of movie
[01:18:13] I would watch over and over
[01:18:14] When I was a younger man
[01:18:15] I don't know that I'm going to
[01:18:16] Watch it over and over now
[01:18:17] But I really liked Fletch
[01:18:18] Um so
[01:18:19] We talked about
[01:18:20] Fletch lives
[01:18:21] Fletch lives rather
[01:18:23] I've messed up almost every name
[01:18:25] Of anything
[01:18:26] Any proper name
[01:18:27] Of an actor or title
[01:18:28] I fucked up today
[01:18:31] Fletch lives
[01:18:32] Kill the franchise
[01:18:34] Yes
[01:18:35] Okay
[01:18:36] As did Chevy Chase
[01:18:37] If Chevy Chase had stayed
[01:18:38] A superstar
[01:18:39] Fletch lives quality would not have
[01:18:41] Really been a problem
[01:18:42] They would have made a third Fletch with him
[01:18:43] But you know
[01:18:44] He went off the rails too
[01:18:45] He made the Chevy Chase show
[01:18:46] Yeah
[01:18:47] That's what happened with vacation
[01:18:48] Was like European bomb pretty hard
[01:18:50] But the game of third shot in Christmas
[01:18:51] Was a rebound
[01:18:52] Right
[01:18:53] And they
[01:18:54] Fletch that didn't happen
[01:18:55] He was out of chances right
[01:18:56] Um
[01:18:57] Okay so 1997
[01:19:00] Kevin Smith is hot
[01:19:01] Right?
[01:19:02] He's got this sort of overall deal
[01:19:03] Chasing Amy
[01:19:04] With Miramat
[01:19:05] Has just come out
[01:19:06] And everyone's like
[01:19:07] Oh Kevin Smith
[01:19:08] The comedy director of the future
[01:19:09] You know
[01:19:10] Kevin Smith
[01:19:11] When's he gonna make like
[01:19:12] A bigger mainstream movie
[01:19:13] And he goes
[01:19:14] Harvey Weinstein who's this guy
[01:19:15] And he goes
[01:19:16] I wanna reboot Fletch
[01:19:17] Oh I didn't know this
[01:19:18] Okay
[01:19:19] So the third Fletch movie
[01:19:21] Is like one of Hollywood's longest running
[01:19:23] Like
[01:19:24] Reboot
[01:19:25] Like they've been trying to do this
[01:19:26] For literally 20 years
[01:19:27] I'm about to blow your mind
[01:19:28] This is like a long story
[01:19:29] With a long list of names
[01:19:30] Okay
[01:19:31] This is awesome
[01:19:32] So he goes to them
[01:19:33] And the original pitch is
[01:19:34] Son of Fletch
[01:19:35] Yeah
[01:19:36] Chevy Chase plays
[01:19:37] Like past the torch
[01:19:38] Joey Lauren Adams who is like
[01:19:39] You know Kevin Smith had been using a lot
[01:19:41] At that point
[01:19:42] And was dating as well
[01:19:43] Okay
[01:19:44] Who's great in
[01:19:45] Hey
[01:19:46] Yeah
[01:19:47] She's a great actor
[01:19:48] She's great in chasing it
[01:19:49] Yeah she's a really good actress
[01:19:50] I like her a lot
[01:19:51] I wish she was still around
[01:19:52] Doing stuff on a large basis
[01:19:54] She would play Fletch's daughter
[01:19:57] Her new boyfriend is Jason Lee
[01:20:00] Jason Lee sort of gets trained
[01:20:02] In the way as a Fletch
[01:20:03] Becomes the new sort of Fletch
[01:20:04] Yeah now let me say something about this
[01:20:06] This is the god awful stupid idea
[01:20:07] I agree
[01:20:08] It's a John
[01:20:09] Jason Lee
[01:20:10] Fucking idea
[01:20:11] Yeah he can't carry that character
[01:20:12] No
[01:20:13] I mean Kevin Smith repeatedly tried
[01:20:14] To make Jason Lee happen
[01:20:16] You know that was never a good idea
[01:20:17] No I like Jason Lee a lot
[01:20:18] I like Jason Lee too
[01:20:19] This is not
[01:20:20] Fletch is not the right role for him
[01:20:21] No
[01:20:22] But he plants his flag in the ground
[01:20:24] And he sort of says
[01:20:25] Like I'm making Fletch with Jason Lee
[01:20:27] Or no one
[01:20:28] And so wine seems like great
[01:20:30] Okay all green lighted
[01:20:31] As soon as Jason Lee is
[01:20:32] A movie star
[01:20:33] Is a leading man
[01:20:34] Right
[01:20:35] And so Jason Lee is doing all their stuff
[01:20:37] Let's remember Jason Lee was like
[01:20:38] He already tried this trick with mall rats
[01:20:40] And that had fucking blown up in everyone's face
[01:20:42] Right
[01:20:43] But then it's like you know he's doing
[01:20:44] What was it 3 to Tango
[01:20:46] Like he's doing a
[01:20:47] Not 3 to Tango
[01:20:48] No what's the one Jason Lee did
[01:20:49] Kissing a fool
[01:20:50] What's the one that Jason Lee is in
[01:20:52] Am I going to have to look up Jason Lee right now
[01:20:53] He's one of those three person romantic comedies
[01:20:55] Where it's Jason Lee
[01:20:56] Like Nev Campbell and another guy
[01:20:58] Well 3 to Tango is
[01:20:59] Matthew Perry, Nev Campbell and Dylan McDermott
[01:21:01] Right
[01:21:02] Which is one of the worst movies ever made
[01:21:04] That's the one where Matthew Perry pretends to be gay
[01:21:06] Right
[01:21:07] I think kissing a fool is
[01:21:09] Maybe
[01:21:10] Matthew Perry
[01:21:11] Kissing a fool 98
[01:21:12] No Matthew Perry is not in that one
[01:21:13] Is David Schwimmer
[01:21:15] Jason Lee
[01:21:16] Got it
[01:21:17] Schwimmer Jason Lee
[01:21:18] Hayek
[01:21:19] Millie Avatar
[01:21:20] Oh okay
[01:21:21] I don't know her
[01:21:22] But he was like doing that
[01:21:23] And then he was getting bigger parts
[01:21:24] In the Karen Crow movies
[01:21:25] That's the movie that was directed by
[01:21:26] Entourage creator Doug Ellen
[01:21:27] Exactly
[01:21:28] Thank you
[01:21:29] Uh exactly
[01:21:30] Thank you
[01:21:31] No no
[01:21:32] Oh yeah
[01:21:33] Jason Lee's run is
[01:21:35] You know
[01:21:36] Yeah he makes movies like that
[01:21:37] He's in dogma obviously
[01:21:39] But it's a small role
[01:21:40] He's in almost famous
[01:21:41] In which he literally plays someone who is upstage
[01:21:43] By his co-star
[01:21:44] Like that's like the role
[01:21:46] He's a great character actor
[01:21:47] He's a great supporting player
[01:21:48] And I mean
[01:21:49] He's in vanilla sky where he's like
[01:21:50] Tom Cruise
[01:21:51] Yeah
[01:21:52] I'm your friend
[01:21:53] Like you know over and over
[01:21:54] So I mean
[01:21:55] Yeah so
[01:21:56] Look forward to our vanilla sky
[01:21:57] Yes definitely happening very soon
[01:21:58] Um but Kevin Smith just sits back
[01:22:00] Like I'll wait for you to be one
[01:22:01] Over on Jason Lee
[01:22:02] But as he's waiting
[01:22:03] The project evolves
[01:22:04] He drops the son of Fletch idea
[01:22:05] And it becomes hard reboot
[01:22:07] It's Fletch 1
[01:22:08] We're doing that book
[01:22:09] Which is the origin story
[01:22:11] And Jason Lee will be Fletch proper
[01:22:13] Because at this point
[01:22:14] It's the idea of like
[01:22:15] Start a new series right
[01:22:17] Around this time Weinstein
[01:22:19] Is throwing out names of people
[01:22:20] He wants to play Fletch instead
[01:22:21] Right
[01:22:22] Okay
[01:22:23] So he goes
[01:22:24] Here are guys out green light
[01:22:25] To play Fletch tomorrow
[01:22:26] And they send out straight offers
[01:22:27] These actors had the chance
[01:22:29] To play Fletch
[01:22:31] Jimmy Fallon
[01:22:33] Adam Sandler
[01:22:34] And Fallon must have been later
[01:22:35] Not in the elite 90's
[01:22:36] No this is by 2003
[01:22:38] Okay
[01:22:39] I'm saying there was a lot
[01:22:40] That makes it okay
[01:22:41] There were five years of Smith
[01:22:42] Just waited
[01:22:43] You didn't mention Affleck
[01:22:44] Please
[01:22:45] Oh that's what I'm mentioning
[01:22:46] Okay
[01:22:47] He goes Fallon
[01:22:48] Sandler
[01:22:49] Pitt
[01:22:50] Will Smith
[01:22:52] Wait whoa
[01:22:53] All those guys pass
[01:22:54] Of course
[01:22:55] And then Weinstein goes
[01:22:56] What about Affleck
[01:22:57] Your friend Affleck
[01:22:58] And they go to Affleck
[01:22:59] And Affleck goes
[01:23:00] Yeah I would do that
[01:23:01] So now the project is on
[01:23:03] Ben Affleck is Fletch
[01:23:05] In Fletch 1
[01:23:06] Directed by Kevin Smith
[01:23:08] They start fucking like
[01:23:09] Scouting locations
[01:23:10] They're starting to like
[01:23:11] They're in you know
[01:23:12] Pre-production
[01:23:13] They're not like ready to go
[01:23:14] But they're starting to develop it
[01:23:15] Was it set in Boston?
[01:23:16] Yeah probably
[01:23:17] Gross
[01:23:18] Three weeks later
[01:23:19] Smith sets his movies in Jersey
[01:23:20] I mean yeah
[01:23:21] But I was just thinking Affleck
[01:23:23] This is 2003 now
[01:23:24] Three weeks in
[01:23:25] Affleck's like
[01:23:26] I can't do this
[01:23:27] Affleck's got to make like
[01:23:29] Geely
[01:23:30] Right?
[01:23:31] Okay so Affleck pulls out
[01:23:32] This is like right before
[01:23:33] Geely comes out
[01:23:34] So now they're back
[01:23:35] To like square one
[01:23:37] Here's the new group of names
[01:23:38] That get thrown out
[01:23:39] Okay
[01:23:40] Zach Braff
[01:23:42] Who's popping off the scrubs
[01:23:44] Right
[01:23:45] Dave Chappelle
[01:23:47] Who I think is a brilliant choice
[01:23:49] Yeah Chappelle would have been good
[01:23:50] Oh he would have been so good
[01:23:51] Yes
[01:23:52] And Kevin Smith was like
[01:23:53] Totally for it and Weinstein
[01:23:54] Was like no way
[01:23:55] The thing was
[01:23:56] I think the story that I've heard is that
[01:23:58] Smith was like
[01:23:59] I do Chappelle
[01:24:00] And Weinstein was like
[01:24:01] No how about Zach Braff
[01:24:02] And Smith was like
[01:24:03] Like he thought about it
[01:24:05] And then he dropped out
[01:24:06] When I made Jersey Girl
[01:24:07] Good job buddy
[01:24:08] Yeah
[01:24:09] The other one
[01:24:10] That got thrown out there was
[01:24:12] Ellen DeGeneres
[01:24:13] Yeah
[01:24:14] I would be
[01:24:15] Yeah I would be into that
[01:24:16] She's got the same kind of shaggy
[01:24:18] Like running commentary quality
[01:24:20] To her comedy
[01:24:21] Where she's just kind of chatting
[01:24:22] To herself a lot
[01:24:23] So she'd probably be pretty good
[01:24:24] I think the key to Fletch is
[01:24:25] To be the smartest person in the room
[01:24:27] And Fletch has to be unflappable
[01:24:28] Sure
[01:24:29] And so stand ups
[01:24:30] People with like strict comedy background
[01:24:32] And sketch or stand up
[01:24:33] Like Chase, like Chappelle
[01:24:35] Like DeGeneres
[01:24:36] Are better than just like
[01:24:37] An actor who's kind of funny
[01:24:38] Oh no I mean like
[01:24:39] Affleck could be a total bored
[01:24:40] Or like
[01:24:41] Oh it'd be a knight
[01:24:42] Someone who's that handsome
[01:24:43] And like just kind of a boring movie
[01:24:44] Star at doesn't work
[01:24:45] That's not what you want
[01:24:46] I wouldn't want that
[01:24:47] Braff
[01:24:48] Who knows
[01:24:49] I don't think he's confident enough
[01:24:50] And that's apparently what it came down to
[01:24:51] As Smith said
[01:24:52] He's not confident enough
[01:24:53] I mean Braff's comedy
[01:24:54] I mean his scrub's character
[01:24:55] Yeah
[01:24:56] The joke is the opposite
[01:24:57] Is that he's kind of like
[01:24:58] Silly
[01:24:59] Right
[01:25:00] Is that Fletch isn't like
[01:25:01] Conventionally cool
[01:25:03] But he doesn't give a shit
[01:25:04] What anyone thinks
[01:25:05] But anyway
[01:25:07] On the other side of town
[01:25:08] Brett Ratner knows that
[01:25:10] The Fletch writes are maybe
[01:25:11] Up for renewal
[01:25:12] And he goes to New Line
[01:25:14] And he goes could we get Fletch
[01:25:15] I do it with Chris Tucker
[01:25:17] Well I didn't know about that
[01:25:18] That's crazy
[01:25:19] Okay
[01:25:20] So then that falls through
[01:25:21] Weinstein re-ups the rights
[01:25:23] Uh, Zach
[01:25:24] Bill Lawrence
[01:25:25] The creator of Scrubs
[01:25:26] Bill Lawrence, creator of Scrubs
[01:25:27] Great TV writer
[01:25:28] Comes on and goes
[01:25:29] I love Fletch
[01:25:30] I like that it had an edge
[01:25:31] I like the film took place in the real world
[01:25:33] That Fletch was like an asshole
[01:25:35] You know
[01:25:36] He can recite Fletch
[01:25:37] Line for line he says
[01:25:38] And he goes
[01:25:39] And he writes all the books
[01:25:40] I want to do Fletch
[01:25:41] Smith is off the project
[01:25:42] Bill Lawrence everyone's like
[01:25:43] Cool idea
[01:25:44] Who do you want?
[01:25:45] Zach Fraff
[01:25:46] Ugh
[01:25:47] This was announced
[01:25:48] This film was announced
[01:25:49] Was formally announced
[01:25:50] Was going ahead
[01:25:51] And then Fraff bowed out
[01:25:53] He said
[01:25:54] Fraff summed up the challenge of Fletch
[01:25:56] Remake
[01:25:57] He's saying whoever takes on the remake
[01:25:58] Really has to nail it
[01:25:59] And even then
[01:26:00] Most people hate it unless it's Chevy Chase
[01:26:02] He feels like the expectations are too high
[01:26:04] He drops out
[01:26:05] Yeah he went out wrong
[01:26:06] I mean that is like so
[01:26:07] A film like designed for a Chevy Chase type
[01:26:11] You know
[01:26:12] It's like perfect
[01:26:13] It really is
[01:26:14] Okay so we're like 2006 now
[01:26:15] Right
[01:26:16] Bill Lawrence is still on
[01:26:17] Weinstein goes out to his next three guys
[01:26:19] Justin Long
[01:26:20] Ugh
[01:26:21] God
[01:26:22] John Krasinski
[01:26:23] Yeah
[01:26:24] Ryan Reynolds
[01:26:26] Why is it all like the dregs of like
[01:26:29] Fucking comedic actors?
[01:26:30] Ryan Reynolds has a Chevy Chase vibe
[01:26:33] That is what he does
[01:26:34] But I mean he wouldn't be good
[01:26:35] He wouldn't be as good
[01:26:36] But he's the right type at least
[01:26:37] He's too hot
[01:26:38] Yes
[01:26:39] Yeah he's too good looking
[01:26:40] He's too good looking
[01:26:41] I mean that's kind of the problem with a lot of Hollywood these days
[01:26:42] He's too hot
[01:26:43] But Reynolds said absolutely no way
[01:26:44] Direct quote it's hallowed ground
[01:26:46] I don't want to touch it
[01:26:47] Hallowed
[01:26:48] I'm sorry
[01:26:49] I'm mispronouncing everything
[01:26:50] It's hallowed out
[01:26:51] Okay so then Bill Lawrence goes
[01:26:52] I don't know
[01:26:53] I want to focus on TV
[01:26:55] I'm dropping out
[01:26:56] They get Steve Pink
[01:26:57] Yeah
[01:26:58] Who's like John Q. Saxe body
[01:26:59] Co-wrote like high fidelity
[01:27:00] Grosspoint blank right
[01:27:01] Yeah he later directed
[01:27:02] The Hot Top Time Machine
[01:27:03] The Hot Top Time Machine
[01:27:04] Movies and accepted
[01:27:05] He comes on
[01:27:06] Okay movement traction
[01:27:08] Who you gonna cast
[01:27:09] Joshua Jackson
[01:27:11] Ugh
[01:27:12] From Fringe
[01:27:13] Oh my god
[01:27:14] And Dawson's Creek
[01:27:15] Yeah
[01:27:16] So this is now like 2007 right
[01:27:19] I like Josh Jackson
[01:27:20] I just don't mean
[01:27:21] Yeah this isn't the right choice
[01:27:22] Right
[01:27:23] Okay so that happens
[01:27:24] It falls away
[01:27:26] Weinstein's career is in a weird place now
[01:27:28] They've now set up the Weinstein Company
[01:27:29] The Miramax has dissolved right
[01:27:31] The rights eventually just fully lapse
[01:27:34] Warner Brothers picks it up
[01:27:35] And they're like
[01:27:36] We made an aggressive bid
[01:27:38] For all 11 Fletch books
[01:27:40] We have the rights to the entire Fletch library
[01:27:42] We want to make Fletch
[01:27:43] A good, grounded
[01:27:45] Like medium budget
[01:27:46] So it doesn't get overblown
[01:27:48] Action, comedy
[01:27:49] Like mystery series
[01:27:50] They bring on a series of writers
[01:27:52] To try to cover it
[01:27:53] Doesn't seem to be going anywhere
[01:27:55] And then two years ago
[01:27:56] They pick the guy who I actually think
[01:27:59] Is the best guy they've had yet
[01:28:01] But the movie hasn't made any progress
[01:28:03] Jason Sudeikis
[01:28:04] Oh yeah definitely
[01:28:06] Jason Sudeikis
[01:28:07] I love that
[01:28:08] Has all of the Fletch qualities
[01:28:10] Totally totally
[01:28:11] Sudeikis is a good choice
[01:28:12] I agree
[01:28:13] He's a really good choice
[01:28:14] Now
[01:28:15] I have so much trouble with him
[01:28:17] Because I think he could be so funny
[01:28:19] And talented
[01:28:20] And I agree with you guys
[01:28:21] He has the same vibe
[01:28:22] But he's never totally clicked
[01:28:24] In a movie for me
[01:28:25] I don't know if he's had the chance
[01:28:26] He may not have had the chance
[01:28:27] No, you're pointing at him
[01:28:29] I know that he may not have had the chance
[01:28:30] But he's been in a lot of movies
[01:28:32] And he's never clicked for me
[01:28:33] That's all I'm saying
[01:28:34] I'll say this
[01:28:35] Have you seen Sleeping With Other People?
[01:28:37] Yeah, he's good in that
[01:28:38] I think he's really good in that
[01:28:39] And I think the thing he does
[01:28:40] In that movie that makes me
[01:28:41] Feel very encouraged about
[01:28:43] The idea of him playing Fletch
[01:28:45] Is he plays the guy who acts like
[01:28:47] He knows everything
[01:28:48] But secretly is kind of miserable inside
[01:28:50] Right
[01:28:51] You know?
[01:28:52] Yeah
[01:28:53] He's doing the smartest guy in the room thing
[01:28:54] But there's like real pathos to it
[01:28:56] I think Chappelle is the best name
[01:28:57] Of anyone they threw out
[01:28:58] I think Chappelle would have been incredible
[01:29:01] Especially if we're talking
[01:29:02] Like early 2000s
[01:29:03] When he was like in it
[01:29:05] You know?
[01:29:06] That would have been amazing
[01:29:07] I don't know if I wanted
[01:29:08] The Kevin Smith version of that
[01:29:10] But a better person
[01:29:11] Making a Dave Chappelle Fletch
[01:29:12] Would have been awesome
[01:29:13] But Sudeikis is the second best name
[01:29:15] Of anyone who's been connected
[01:29:17] Of those like 25 people
[01:29:19] Over the last 20 years
[01:29:21] So we, you know
[01:29:22] Maybe we're getting Fletch
[01:29:24] I hope so
[01:29:25] FYI we're not getting Fletch
[01:29:28] That was announced in 2013
[01:29:29] It's been three years
[01:29:30] Nothing's happened
[01:29:31] I believe it's 2014
[01:29:32] I think you're right
[01:29:33] Maybe it's 2014
[01:29:34] I think in 2013 they bought
[01:29:36] They got a script
[01:29:37] 2014
[01:29:38] 2014 they attached Sudeikis to it
[01:29:40] They have not attached their director
[01:29:41] I think 2015 they said
[01:29:42] They had a new script
[01:29:43] I don't know anyway
[01:29:45] That's what we're saying on Fletch
[01:29:46] Fletch is a cursed property
[01:29:48] It's not gonna happen
[01:29:49] And maybe it shouldn't
[01:29:50] Fletch is a good movie
[01:29:51] Like we may not need another Fletch
[01:29:53] It still pretty much holds up
[01:29:55] I'd say, you know
[01:29:56] Like I think all
[01:29:57] It's still got some really great jokes
[01:29:59] I mean time kinda
[01:30:00] Wasn't as kind to some of the
[01:30:02] Like other elements
[01:30:04] Like I feel like there's a couple
[01:30:05] Of like racier
[01:30:06] Yeah
[01:30:07] Kind of jokes
[01:30:08] But otherwise
[01:30:09] It still holds up
[01:30:10] Like I think in the first film
[01:30:11] It's like
[01:30:12] I'd say for me
[01:30:13] I always thought of it as like
[01:30:15] If you build a movie around a personality
[01:30:17] Or like, you know
[01:30:18] Like this is Chevy's movie
[01:30:20] I think this is such a strong
[01:30:22] Example of like
[01:30:24] Taking a comedic actor
[01:30:26] And building a movie
[01:30:28] Around his sensibility
[01:30:30] It's a great Star Vehicle
[01:30:31] Yeah
[01:30:32] It's a really really good Star Vehicle
[01:30:33] Yeah
[01:30:34] Can I throw something out there
[01:30:36] For all you Hollywood bigwigs
[01:30:37] Who are listening
[01:30:38] Oh yeah
[01:30:39] I don't know
[01:30:40] Maybe Sudeik is just a loosely attached
[01:30:41] Maybe you're waiting on a script
[01:30:42] Maybe you're trying to find a director
[01:30:43] Maybe that's laps
[01:30:44] Maybe he's not interested anymore
[01:30:45] Maybe the game's open
[01:30:47] I got
[01:30:48] Four words for you
[01:30:49] You guys suggest him?
[01:30:50] Okay
[01:30:51] Ready?
[01:30:52] Here's my suggestion
[01:30:53] And let's see
[01:30:54] If the hairs stand up
[01:30:55] On the back of your neck
[01:30:56] Ben
[01:30:57] Hosley
[01:30:58] Is
[01:30:59] Flet
[01:31:02] Alright
[01:31:03] Has the dude ever carried
[01:31:04] A movie before
[01:31:05] No
[01:31:06] No, never
[01:31:07] But we didn't know
[01:31:08] How long it would take
[01:31:09] Until he did it
[01:31:10] That's right
[01:31:11] Um
[01:31:12] Great stuff from all you guys
[01:31:14] I want to talk about the box office
[01:31:15] Okay
[01:31:16] I'm very excited
[01:31:17] The weekend of May 31st 1985
[01:31:19] Okay
[01:31:20] I mean
[01:31:22] Fletch opened number two to seven mil
[01:31:24] It would eventually clear fifty
[01:31:26] Very nice multiplier
[01:31:27] Yeah
[01:31:28] You know those are the days in Hollywood
[01:31:29] Where you would kind of just
[01:31:30] You know stay around in theaters
[01:31:31] Making the same amount of money
[01:31:32] We get for a week
[01:31:33] Leggy
[01:31:34] You know leggy run
[01:31:35] Can you name
[01:31:36] Can you think you can name
[01:31:37] Any of the other movies
[01:31:39] In the top ten?
[01:31:40] Yeah
[01:31:41] 1985
[01:31:43] Huh
[01:31:44] Okay
[01:31:46] Like what was number one?
[01:31:47] God
[01:31:48] So I'm trying to think through other years
[01:31:50] Like okay
[01:31:51] So I know eighty something's broken
[01:31:52] Encounters of a third kind?
[01:31:53] Most encounters is not
[01:31:54] That's the way earlier
[01:31:55] That's seventy seven
[01:31:56] That's the same year as Star Wars
[01:31:57] I don't know anything
[01:31:58] Okay
[01:31:59] That's alright
[01:32:00] Eighty three is Jedi
[01:32:01] Eighty six
[01:32:02] Eighty four is ET
[01:32:04] Or eighty five is ET
[01:32:05] Eighty I can't remember
[01:32:06] I think 80
[01:32:07] Oh no ET is earlier
[01:32:08] Eighty two
[01:32:09] That's right
[01:32:10] Look I'll give you some hints for number one
[01:32:11] Okay
[01:32:12] Number one it's in its second week of release
[01:32:14] Okay
[01:32:15] It's making fourteen million in its second week
[01:32:17] Pretty good for 1995
[01:32:19] It's an action R rated super violent drama
[01:32:22] Beverly Hills Cop Two
[01:32:23] It's a sequel
[01:32:24] Nope
[01:32:25] Beverly Hills Cop
[01:32:26] Rambo first
[01:32:27] First two
[01:32:28] Rambo two
[01:32:29] Rambo first blood part two
[01:32:30] Yes
[01:32:31] Ben nailed it
[01:32:32] Ben nailed it
[01:32:33] Yes
[01:32:34] Beverly Hills Cop two
[01:32:35] Of course not
[01:32:36] Beverly Hills Cop one hadn't come out yet
[01:32:37] Beverly Hills Cop one
[01:32:38] Has come out
[01:32:39] It's in its twenty sixth week of release
[01:32:41] It's number five at the box office
[01:32:42] Isn't that crazy?
[01:32:43] That's insane
[01:32:44] It's made two hundred and twenty million dollars
[01:32:46] Wow so Fletcher Beverly Hills Cop are out at the same time
[01:32:48] Yeah but Beverly Hills Cop had been out for a while
[01:32:50] Right yeah yeah
[01:32:51] Okay
[01:32:52] Number three is a James Bond movie
[01:32:54] Is the James Bond movie of the year
[01:32:56] I believe it is the last Roger Moore bond
[01:32:58] Right because he said Living Daylights
[01:33:00] Is the Jodon Baker one
[01:33:01] That comes out a couple years later
[01:33:03] The last Roger Moore movie is
[01:33:06] Not Living Let Die right
[01:33:09] No that's the first
[01:33:10] That's the first one?
[01:33:11] Yep
[01:33:12] What am I thinking of?
[01:33:13] I don't know
[01:33:14] A view to a kill is the name
[01:33:16] Okay
[01:33:17] Okay
[01:33:18] That's number three
[01:33:19] That's number three
[01:33:20] Not a big hit
[01:33:21] That was a you know kind of a bomb
[01:33:22] It was sort of a
[01:33:23] Not to mock the project
[01:33:24] Yeah number four is a Roger Pryor comedy
[01:33:27] A Roger Pryor comedy
[01:33:28] I mean Richard Pryor
[01:33:29] Look who's griffing now
[01:33:30] Oh boy oh boy
[01:33:31] Richard Pryor comedy
[01:33:32] The toy
[01:33:33] Nope
[01:33:34] Here no C. No
[01:33:35] Nope
[01:33:36] Bruce's millions
[01:33:37] Yeah you got it
[01:33:38] Yes
[01:33:39] Here no C. No is a good abbreviation though
[01:33:41] I like that
[01:33:42] And then number six
[01:33:44] We've got police academy two
[01:33:46] The first assignment
[01:33:47] Well I wish you would let me guess the sequel name
[01:33:49] Because I know the names of all the
[01:33:51] Congratulations
[01:33:52] Number seven is a
[01:33:54] You know Eric Stoll's share joint
[01:33:56] Mask
[01:33:57] Directed by P.D. Bogdanovich
[01:33:59] Number eight is a you know
[01:34:01] A man in an Arquette Madonna joint
[01:34:03] Who's that girl
[01:34:04] Oh no that's police taken soon
[01:34:05] Yeah
[01:34:06] Number nine is a film called code of silence
[01:34:08] Never heard of it
[01:34:09] Me neither
[01:34:10] Got Chuck Norris in it
[01:34:11] Oh the good Chuck
[01:34:12] And number ten is
[01:34:14] Maybe my favorite movie of 1985
[01:34:17] Your favorite movie of 1985
[01:34:21] Give me a hand
[01:34:22] Put it this way
[01:34:23] This movie came out February 1985
[01:34:25] It was not made for a zillion Oscars
[01:34:27] So fucking good
[01:34:29] My favorite movie of 1985 because back in the future came out in 1985
[01:34:32] But it's right up there
[01:34:33] And Brazil came out in 1985
[01:34:35] Good year
[01:34:36] It's not made for a zillion Oscars
[01:34:38] Alright it stars one of America's greatest movie stars
[01:34:41] But it is the only movie he was ever nominated for an Oscar for
[01:34:44] Oh witness
[01:34:45] Witness
[01:34:47] Have you seen witness Ben?
[01:34:48] Harrison Ford goes undercover in an Amish community
[01:34:50] The best movie
[01:34:51] Really?
[01:34:52] His only Oscar nomination
[01:34:53] One day we'll do Peter Weir
[01:34:54] Yeah
[01:34:55] Great director
[01:34:57] Interesting box office
[01:34:58] Fun time
[01:34:59] That's like that movie with Tim the two man tailor
[01:35:03] Yeah
[01:35:04] Yeah for Richard Porre
[01:35:05] Yeah similar premise right
[01:35:06] For Richard Porre is such a witness ripoff
[01:35:08] That they mention it in the movie
[01:35:10] That they are ripping off the movie witness
[01:35:12] Like literally Tim Allen says to Kirstie Ali
[01:35:14] Like this is like a lot like witness
[01:35:16] And she's like yeah I know
[01:35:18] They also
[01:35:19] That's how he's credited above on the title right
[01:35:22] Is Tim the tool man tailor
[01:35:24] Yeah that's correct
[01:35:25] Yeah he changed his name by deed pole to
[01:35:28] Tim the tool man tailor
[01:35:30] Anyway so that's Fletch 1985
[01:35:32] This little picture of the world
[01:35:33] Twenty at thirty one years ago
[01:35:35] The way we were
[01:35:36] Literally almost exactly thirty one years ago
[01:35:39] Yeah well this has been fun
[01:35:41] Ben thank you so much for treating us to this
[01:35:43] Oh no really guys
[01:35:44] I want you to think about the next Ben's choice
[01:35:47] I want you to really think about it
[01:35:48] I know you've got some ideas
[01:35:49] But I want you to think about it
[01:35:50] This is the first it won't be the last
[01:35:52] No I think what will be nice
[01:35:54] Cause this is a palette cleanser
[01:35:56] Is like I'm gonna try and pick movies
[01:35:58] Like definitely like not using a director
[01:36:00] That we might want to pursue in the future
[01:36:02] So I have to kind of accomplish that
[01:36:04] But I think also I have a certain sensibility
[01:36:06] With movies that's very different
[01:36:08] Than I think you guys
[01:36:09] Which is I like dumb shit
[01:36:10] Alright
[01:36:11] Hey we like dumb shit
[01:36:12] We like a lot of dumb shit
[01:36:13] I know you do
[01:36:14] So I'm just saying the next one
[01:36:15] Will be like a nice change up
[01:36:17] From whatever we do end up pursuing
[01:36:19] Next right
[01:36:20] Yeah and I'll say this too
[01:36:21] And I don't mean this as an insult
[01:36:22] So don't take it backhandedly
[01:36:24] No I won't
[01:36:25] I think a lot of the movies you pick
[01:36:26] Won't be by directors that we would ever cover
[01:36:29] Yeah definitely
[01:36:30] That's true
[01:36:31] Although some of the ones you threw out there
[01:36:32] We you know we were like
[01:36:33] Ooh no maybe we won't
[01:36:34] A couple we want to save
[01:36:35] You're holding on to that Stargate guy
[01:36:37] Yeah
[01:36:38] Roland Ambrick
[01:36:39] Never know
[01:36:40] Well thank you for listening
[01:36:42] Next week of course
[01:36:43] We're gonna be back with
[01:36:44] Show me the podcast
[01:36:46] You had me at podcast
[01:36:47] You had me at podcast
[01:36:48] I don't know what we're gonna call it
[01:36:49] Yeah
[01:36:50] We're gonna hold a boombox over our heads
[01:36:52] And play you the first episode of our
[01:36:54] Cameron Crowe mini series
[01:36:56] It's crazy
[01:36:57] Wow it's gonna be crazy
[01:36:58] Say anything
[01:36:59] Pod any cast
[01:37:00] Pod any cast
[01:37:01] So look forward to that
[01:37:03] It's gonna be fun
[01:37:04] It's gonna be untrared territory
[01:37:06] Out of genre directors for a little bit
[01:37:08] Well it's good that we did this 80s comedy then
[01:37:10] You know
[01:37:11] Got us at least closer to the vibe
[01:37:12] Yeah 100%
[01:37:13] 100%
[01:37:14] Yeah and now Ben as our guest host
[01:37:18] Do you wanna wrap it up
[01:37:19] Things up
[01:37:20] Yeah
[01:37:21] I say we've gone pretty long
[01:37:22] So we'll hit a bird report
[01:37:24] Or an orange twist file
[01:37:26] Maybe next time
[01:37:27] I don't know David
[01:37:30] I mean I saw you guys yesterday
[01:37:32] I haven't eaten any burgers since then
[01:37:33] Yeah we record
[01:37:34] Yeah exactly yeah
[01:37:35] Okay but I guess
[01:37:37] I guess I know how we do wrap these
[01:37:39] Episodes up
[01:37:40] You're a fan of the show
[01:37:41] Yeah I've listened to it before
[01:37:43] And don't forget to say
[01:37:45] Rate review and subscribe
[01:37:46] Oh of course
[01:37:47] Guys please
[01:37:48] You always remind us to do
