From Iconography, Ayo Edibiri and Olivia Craighead join Griffin and special guest the crypt keeper that is gravelly-voiced David. Get ready for a movie surprisingly starring Sebastian Stan, and a 20-minute long story about the saga of Marc Summers. How many sitcoms were about dads that are also another thing? How much family trauma comes out at a wedding? How muddy is this film?

[00:00:20] I am Shiva the Destroyer your harbinger of podcasting this evening Okay, I don't know. I want to get it over. We're already we got energy in this room We do and I just remember I don't know if this is true for you guys

[00:00:34] But this trailer used to just play constantly Yes, and she says that in the trailer and I got so annoyed at that line in the trailer You know it's fine

[00:00:42] I did too because you know in the trailer I was like in the trailer I was like this is supposed to be funny Right and in the movie you're like this is the most painful

[00:00:53] That's quote number one on IMDb a quote number two is the monologue about her killing Ethan Oh, you should have that one. I was thinking about no he weren't Throwing you out of this studio look I'm little off on Terry blow podcast Oh We love to weigh in

[00:01:12] Just a big oof for me on that A little bit of a fewe for weighing in on that If anything you could have made worse choices Self described on Fault Terry Blank A podcasting is sick A podcasting Not good It's necessary. It's nice someone had to step up

[00:01:29] I don't know that it had to be you I kept on goading Terry gross I was like I feel like the pressure like the the the sort of I don't know the movement felt like it was getting behind like go off Terry Get messy Gross on gross

[00:01:46] Get gross Yeah Terry get gross was the hashtag Love that Yeah people wanted her like talking boogers Yeah Talking barf Being I guess that's less long-term and more garbage pail kid But they're close She is gonna host a revival of double dare on Netflix Super sloppy double there

[00:02:05] Exactly That's one of the cruelest things that has ever happened in the entertainment industry is like Mark Summers they're like

[00:02:10] Congratulations Mark we finally got you a game show job and he's like oh my god what is it am I am I doing prices right is Bob Barker stepping down there like no You're doing double there and he's like cool I'm not gonna tell anyone I'm OCD

[00:02:21] I'm not gonna tell anyone how much this drives me crazy And then like four seasons Is that the story of double dare He's OCD He's crazy OCD Oh and he just had to host a show where the whole point is to like cover yourself in the Yeah

[00:02:33] And like pull boogers out of a giant news And then four seasons and Nickelodeon's like Mark great news and he's like shows canceled shows canceled shows canceled and they're like we're revamping it's super sloppy double dare now We're adding more boogers He hosted it for all seven years

[00:02:48] He's like horribly OCD and there's one of the greatest clips on YouTube is him going on Jay Leno and it was like the first time he was getting to do like an adult thing quote unquote Oh Mark

[00:03:01] Like they were like validating him by being like now your kids might know this guy Oh And the first guest on Leno was Burt Reynolds Mm-hmm

[00:03:11] And he was very much trying to like keep the energy of old like Johnny Carson Burt Reynolds alive and he was so depressed that he was sharing a couch with a Nickelodeon host He have his fragile ego that he just keeps on making fun of Mark Summers

[00:03:28] Oh my god And Mark is like haha yeah well you know it

[00:03:32] And after like six or seven direct body blows Mark Summers makes some joke about like how many failed marriages Burt Reynolds has and Burt Reynolds picks his mug up off the table and throws it in Mark Summers face We all just went quiet Yeah

[00:03:49] So I hope there was a cold What's kind of funny I think you made this up This is 100% true But what's kind of funny is it's like the show Well okay so then

[00:03:57] It's also kind of like Rachel getting married that weird sort of like fuck is this about to flip into like What a beautiful set of lines So then Mark Summers picks up I'm sorry I'm not even close to being done

[00:04:07] Mark Summers picks up his mug tries to throw it back in Burt's face What is Jay doing during this It's nothing What's this Yeah and Burt Knocks the mug before it connects and it hits Mark Summers again So he's double dosed Oh

[00:04:25] And then some fucking producer thinks they're funny has a PA run out with two Oh it gives them towels Pytons No What Filled with whipped cream and is like pie fight and Mark Summers is like I thought this was my break Oh

[00:04:40] From getting sloppy shit all over me It's only worse It's only worse That is Rachel getting married The thing that's crazy is It is

[00:04:47] Back then it was just like that happened on TV and if you saw it you might go to work the next day and be like did you watch that was crazy And now I can just Google it and find it and it's on YouTube forever Yes

[00:04:57] Just watch it You can only talk about it on a podcast Yep That's the only place you're allowed to talk about it legally Mark Summers production Oh okay Okay for sure So I guess he's Keep the dream alive baby Keep the dream alive Keep the legacy alive

[00:05:10] You're right you're right good call I'm yeah introduce our podcast Okay you're kind of sick I have been sick You are dressed like the Crypt Keeper What do you mean I have a hoodie on What do you mean I'm dressed like the Crypt Keeper

[00:05:21] You're all dusty and you look like on death's door He has BC It's a bit A to C Crypt Keeper is my inspiration man I wish I was dressed like the Crypt Keeper Everyone you of course know that this is blank check with Griffin and David I'm Griffin

[00:05:34] I'm David He's the Crypt Keeper I'm a little sick so my voice sounds kind of atmosphere It's fine and there's no judgment but you are now canonically the Crypt Keeper And we would love to hear you cackle at some point

[00:05:46] I genuinely think that might fuck my throat up Okay try It's a podcast about phemography It's directors who have massive success early on in their careers Given the series of blank checks to make whatever crazy passion projects they want And sometimes those checks clear

[00:06:00] And sometimes they bounce baby And this is a main series on the films of Jonathan Demme We're near in the end Yeah We're getting close We are This is called Rachel Getting Married Yes And our guest today from the Econography Podcast

[00:06:16] Our main series is called Stop Making Podcast It's called Stop Making Podcast Thank you It's a very, very Lightly veiled threat from our listeners against us Yup And our guest today from the podcast Econography Olivia and Ayo Hi Hello Very excited to be here

[00:06:33] So excited to have you here A big, big fan of your show I've been listening to your show for years at this point That's completely insane Isn't that crazy? Very bizarre Yeah I've been listening to your show for years because it has existed less than a year

[00:06:49] And that's the only reason why I don't know, that's a little embarrassing though I feel like you could have been listening for a couple of years Spiritually I feel like I was Thank you David I was waiting for it I was holding my ear up to the sky

[00:07:01] And I was like something's missing Where's the show I want to be listening to right now? I mean Ayo and I have been listening to it for years basically Because it literally is just what we talk about when we talk about it

[00:07:11] That's my, when people like ask David or I for podcast advice That's what I always say is like Do you have a friend who you host a podcast with when you just hang out? Right And would you have those conversations irregardless? Yeah

[00:07:23] If that's the case then you won't ever run out of material And you'll probably enjoy doing it Yeah Right? Yeah I also feel like it's just like If you care about just like making money getting bitches What's there to not care about? That's what I meant Bubbly

[00:07:39] Which is different to me than champagne Champagne and bubbly are different Bubble bath You're talking about bubble bath Mr. Bubble But also like Perrier Models Sure Models, sure Yeah, so like that sort of stuff then I think that's Then yeah then you should host a podcast

[00:07:53] We all know that hosting a podcast is the quickest And cleanest path to financial success It's a straight line And in many ways if I may add to that Also security Yes And I think that's important Yeah Health benefits And respect That's the thing

[00:08:13] That's the thing that a lot of people don't talk about There's so much respect So much respect And I wouldn't say anything on a podcast You know what I mean? Like that it wasn't like just full to the brim With respect and respectability

[00:08:24] Like everything I say on a podcast I would say at the UN 100% I see you have a stack of papers Because you've prepared Well, yes And you have one of those little name plates In front of you too And there's a translator There's an earpiece

[00:08:38] Yeah, well I did come from the UN Okay And I'm going after this Our studio is not that far from the UN It's not that far from the UN I don't know If you think about it Yeah It is though I work for Tunisia There's nothing more Validating

[00:08:55] Than finally starting your podcast You know the dream you've had Since you were a little babe A wee babe Right Finally getting that podcast off the ground I'm going, man For once in my life All my relatives over 50 Are going to respect me And understand exactly

[00:09:12] What I'm doing with my life Yeah, that's the thing That's the thing Immediately it's going to be clear though Yeah, my grandma's like Obsessed with my podcast She's like I love Opening the podcast app Which is something that I do But then she understands

[00:09:23] And it's like listen to you Talk I've rated it I've reviewed it Yeah, I send it to my friends Who are also old And they know exactly what's going on They get the algorithm They really do They get the algorithm They're kind of shifting the algorithm

[00:09:36] In many ways Probably all But the iconography The basic premise is that you Pick an icon of the moment And debate whether or not They're going to stay in the test of time Right, is that a good summation? Someone comes on with someone they Love

[00:09:55] And then we talk about them for An hour Right Play games Have good chat Fresh banter Which I feel like is a thing I mean this podcast kind of came out of That David and I used to do Where we would pick someone And go like wait

[00:10:08] Let's like go through their career One by one The two of you are a little more Forward thinking I feel like In what way? You're a little more invested Like the present of what they're doing And what are they going to do next

[00:10:20] And what should they do next Well, we almost did One of our original ideas Was like picking one person And doing ten episodes about them And so we were like What if we spent ten weeks Talking about Tom Cruise Sure I mean you never run out of time

[00:10:34] We never run out of stuff But some people you do Really it's like Tom Cruise And then there's kind of a drop In people you can talk about Tom Cruise, Will Smith, Mousetree Oprah But it's like I don't want to talk about The four Like I don't know

[00:10:49] Carly Rae Jeffers Carly Rae Jeffers Ten weeks No, I mean she's nine at most Yeah You could get nine good ones out of her Nine and a little bonus 15 special That's emotion side B She could get a mini She could get a mini soot Emergency mini soot

[00:11:03] No question Emergency But one of the games you do on your show A Vroom Vroom Ah yes Where you try to come up with a vehicle For someone who deserves recognition Hasn't gotten a Vroom Hasn't gotten an Oscar To get the Oscar Yeah And this in retrospect

[00:11:19] Is such a perfect slam dunk Vroom Vroom for Anne Hathaway I know Literally Didn't even really realize at the time No We didn't give her any Well at the time this was her Coming out as a serious actress party Yeah Even though she had been in Brokeback Mountain

[00:11:37] Yeah but she was the most disrespected of the four The only one of the four who was totally Flatly disrespected Even though also she's doing Fucking good work back then She's doing the work On the phone On the phone On the phone is her best scene

[00:11:49] On the phone She's in it the least I would say Of the four Yeah But when she's there She's got it She's filled for the phone It's iconic Yeah But this I feel like at the time The 2008 was a hard year though It was a hard year

[00:12:03] Because there were heavy hitters There was so much Well we all know who won best actress that year Of course the best performance in the history of cinema Kate Winslet and the reader A performance we talk about all the time And here's the thing also

[00:12:14] That movie is infallible It's so perfect It's a perfect movie and I'm always like Ooh what if like hot Nazis could fuck You know what I mean And then I'm like Fuck you get it already in the reader Have you seen that movie? Yeah

[00:12:25] I have not seen that movie That like Hugh Jackman joke from the monologue That's like the reader I still haven't seen the reader Like that's me That is an example And then she won And then she won

[00:12:35] And that's an example of a movie where I kind of think That 30% of the people who voted for her Hadn't seen it Do you remember how that went? Well they thought it was going to be A double nomination year for her

[00:12:45] Yes I was going to talk about it But you can go right ahead Reservation Not reservation I can't Reservation We all got there Yes we all got there Was going to be her best lead actress play Yes Because that was her big deal movie with her husband

[00:12:59] Reuniting Jack and Rose And Michael Shannon And then they were like Michael Shannon Not with the games all three The games all here People forget that Michael Shannon played The anchor Yeah he was In Titanic Because he's really doing subsurface work

[00:13:15] Well he also did mocap for the iceberg Well and also David Harbour played the harbour David Harbour played the harbour That was an extremely good joke He's in Revolutionary War Road And his name is Harbour I like that What does he extremely

[00:13:28] I think it was just an extremely good joke I just really think David Fucking destroyed that Congratulations Thank you so much Hey Ben How are you doing? I'm good I'm hungover David Harbour really been in it What do you mean?

[00:13:41] He just kind of been around for a long time He's so good in that movie He's kind of like the way that Sam lets his face Well just like you're like Oh yeah you've been around Sam who? Sam lets his face Moon Oh Rockwell Yeah Sam Moon

[00:13:56] But yes Kate Winslet I believe Revolutionary Road was A paramount vantage Dreamworks production Big Christmas Reader was Weinstein And so Weinstein Even though she's the leader of the reader Weinstein's like fine She'll be supporting I would argue she's supporting him She's not It's crazy

[00:14:13] I think she's supporting him No there's two leads Her and the boy I think the boy's the lead Yeah and she's the other lead I think she's not in a lot of the movie She disappears from a long time She's the other lead though

[00:14:23] I don't know about this She is She was also top-level Why are you Why are you Very seriously She's very much the lead I seriously I just am like confused I feel like there's 40 minutes where she's gone When he like loses You can still be a lead

[00:14:37] Yeah she's the lead She's literally the other lead Putting her in This is crazy I mean I think she's the second lead But I think she's a very distant second too Putting her in supporting was An outrageous move And the Academy So she got the globe

[00:14:52] She wins both globes She won both globes She wins best actress And best supporting actress that year That's crazy People are addicted to a narrative That's why They loved the narrative She got it Overdue She had time You know NAM for Revolutionary Road

[00:15:05] Like you know the other award body Revolutionary Road is also boring It's a terrible movie But they were like fine We'll play your game You know right I think she's better in Revolutionary Road Than she is in The Reader Yes but neither has sort of heard her best

[00:15:17] In the opening And then the Oscars were just like No what? No Forget Revolutionary Road Right It sucks And they just put her in lead Put her in lead for The Reader They corrected all the bullshit But you saying it that way

[00:15:29] Makes it sound like the entire Oscar Oscar voting body had a meeting And strategized It kind of felt that way Because it just happened It's kind of crazy when that shit just happens It's the same with the Whale Rider Yeah Oh Where she got supporting nominations

[00:15:42] In every precursor Which makes Because that's what they were doing It makes no sense she's the lead Zero sense The Whale Yeah I was going to say Who else could be the lead of that movie? You're being crazy now Obviously The lead of the Whale Rider

[00:15:54] Is the Whale She was the rider Is the ocean Yes If your movie has the ocean The ocean is And the ocean The ocean was going to the governor's ball And going to the dinners But no And the Oscars were just like No she's lead

[00:16:08] Got invited to the Met Too Was doing the CFDA rounds Really Really made good with Anna Wintour That year And that's like That was a big invite Because the ocean took up Most of the Met You couldn't invite anyone else At you No Yeah

[00:16:23] Just Anna and the ocean She had a good time I love a wet met But once she got Once that happened She was going to win Yes Right Who else was nominated Here we go That was the year that supporting Was like hot though

[00:16:41] Well we can talk about that But first I want you guys To guess the other nominees Okay So Hathaway is one Hathaway and Kate Winslet Winslet Then you have a major movie star Who has an Oscar And it's her only other nomination Oh and it's a bad performance

[00:16:54] In my mind I don't mind it It's not my fave Angeline Jolien Changeling right Correct Horrifying Then you have A national nightmare A huge Oscar winning star Who's been nominated many times One of her worst performances In my opinion Wow Yeah Some people like this performance

[00:17:14] Is it a national Oscar winning Or just the one Not doubt Okay Okay so this is Wait I pointed at Yeah because This was the year that Viola everyone was like Who are you Because iconic 12 In like 42 seconds scene And everyone was like

[00:17:33] Bitch you can crouch your nose Which she does She does it very well I think I'm going to get A whole put So that you can just Like it's not right now Easy Easy And Meryl is just kind of You know she has such doubts

[00:17:47] I think Meryl is really good She's terrible Meryl is actually Everyone is so good in that movie Yeah I don't love that movie But she's You think it's one of her worst performances And you've seen Mamma Mia 2 Wait Have you seen Mamma Mia 2 What is going on

[00:17:59] She's not even like In Mamma Mia 2 She only has one song She just like shows up She's on Meryl is actually bad In like Which is the same year The Iron Lady She's terrible in the Iron Yeah She's been the Iron Lady Ricky in the Flash

[00:18:13] Doubt is bad Ricky in the Flash Which you guys are going to talk about We're going to get there Julia Julia She's good in Julia and Julia She's great She's great in Julia She's pretty great for party I think Amy Adams is good In Julia and Julia

[00:18:24] She just wanted her She's just like poorly It's like a horribly written It's like Oh I'm hanging out in Paris This is gorgeous And then she's like My giant apartment in Queens Is so sad That's where Spicina doesn't do anything But love me And I hate him

[00:18:38] He is cute You've all talked about people Who've been around forever And they're just rounders on Netflix Yeah Christina's just in one of the poker games Yeah Yeah but it's one of those things Where you're like Right, Christmasina is like The same age as Matt Damon

[00:18:50] And Edward Norton Yes And they were movie stars And Christina was just told Like you're going to have to wait 15 years Every time I watch You've Got Mail I'm always And he like shows up In like the big bookstore Being like

[00:19:02] Do you know where this ballet book is I'm like Oh my gosh You've just been around You've been working Wait also in This movie In Richard Getting Married In a hurry We're going to get to that But it's being beautiful He wants to fucking zip a light

[00:19:16] He needs it That is a real What? You're just going to go Torch the Self Help Library again That is a real Like it's a real performance He's doing some amazing hair acting Exactly It's hair It's hands and eyes He's like I'm going to do everything

[00:19:29] This is going This is going to the front of my real Okay wait We have four out of five The fifth is A character actress She later wins an Oscar Famous for self campaign She's for self campaign Correct No no not Wind River For um Oh Frozen River

[00:19:44] What's it called Consider dot dot dot Famous This was her No that was That was the fighter The first she won for This is her first nomination She's good at that movie There is a movie That has been buying out Deadline every day It's called

[00:19:59] Like Mountains of Fire Or something And it is directed And I'm sorry It is written by a woman Who is the wife Of like some sort of Greek Business mogul True Adapted from her own Self published novel Hulamohalis Produced by a production company That he founded

[00:20:18] To help him make this movie And distributed by a Distribution company That he founded after No one bought this movie That's love baby What are you talking about Should I do that Directed by a guy who on IMDB his main credit Is that he has directed

[00:20:32] Some of the most Beloved DVD menus Of all time I swear to God That's what it says And you can direct a DVD menu That's what they claim His only other credits are DVD special features for Terminator 2 They keep on buying out All of Deadline with

[00:20:48] Melissa Leo style confidence And what they're doing is It's considered like Mountains of Fire Or whatever it's called It's some Greek period Love war epic With Christopher Plummer And Patty Lapone What I'm sorry I can wrap this up I swear to God And on their ads

[00:21:06] On their campaign ads Their FYC ads They just put laurels Around every name As if they had won As if they had won prizes That rocks So they're like That's supporting actor Christopher Plummer They just put laurels I'm cutting you off Alright that's enough for that

[00:21:19] I think that was interesting I was done I wanted to give you The supporting actress nominees That's why I'm cutting you off Penelope Cruz wins Penelope Cruz wins She marches to her win I feel like that was Just kind of like happening Sure Should you agree

[00:21:32] That was just You just sort of got it I feel like the only conflict was Potentially Winslet And the once Winslet was lead There was nothing left Right Then you have Amy Adams And Viola Davis for doubt I was pissed I was pissed They didn't win

[00:21:46] I was pissed they didn't win Dual win That would have been cool Would have been amazing Then you have Teraji P. Henson Classic For the curious case Of Peter Button Which is so good in It's so bad And she's so good in it Rude That movie is okay

[00:22:00] Yeah I think that movie is aggressively okay For how good she is I want to do Fincher to talk about that movie Because I haven't seen it in years And I feel like maybe I'll stand up nicely I feel like revisiting it

[00:22:11] Oh I don't know if it would be That's why I watched it a few months ago In a hotel room And I was like It was not working He's like a little old man That's also when I rewatch the reader And then he grows to To a baby

[00:22:21] Hot and then baby In Benjamin Button that happens That's correct I think Wouldn't it be fun If Baby Yoda turns out Their Benjamin Button Wait I was making this connection Yesterday because I learned I haven't watched The Mandalorian But I learned that Baby Yoda Is 50 years old

[00:22:35] He's 50 years old Which is a fun twist And I was like Oh a 50 year old baby Like Benjamin Button Right Interesting But he's not Benjamin Button He might Because he's gonna get old No he's just like They grow really slowly They just grow slow

[00:22:49] I think it's the concept I think I love Baby Yoda But I don't care about Star Wars I like haven't watched any of it But I did see Baby Yoda is very important Are you gonna get this And we must protect him No I'm not gonna get this

[00:22:58] I'm gonna find someone with a password Yeah can I get a login David You have a login David David can I get a login David David I wanna watch even Steven's And then tweet about it Or ever at least David please David The real price of 6.99 a month

[00:23:12] Or whatever David is on the Disney payroll Of course because he's a critic Of course right yes That's why I gave her Is into a negative review Right which means Did you? Is it bad? It's okay It's all over the place It's a long conversation

[00:23:25] Hey David let it go What I was gonna say Is I think Brad is bad In Benjamin Button I kinda like the movie Why are you afraid of hot people Okay Brad I'm not afraid Because I think people in shit Rules are bad You're shaking You're literally shaking

[00:23:39] The scene where Brad rides the motorcycle Yeah the best scene in the movie One of my formative horny memories Absolutely Really hot Yeah I just watched Gips of that On Tumblr back and forth It's a feature probably in that trailer

[00:23:51] I just think his old man performance is bad Alright I wanna re-watch the movie Because all people are bad It's actually really brave We actually just haven't thought about it heartily It's actually maybe a detailed act The fifth nominee was Marisa Tomei For the wrestler

[00:24:03] And she's great in that You heard this story My favorite story when I worked at ABC kitchen I saw Marisa Tomei eating lunch with Deepak Chopra and sobbing after she lost And she was crying And she was like Why can't I ever do anything right

[00:24:18] She has an Oscar and is great She should chill out She's doing the way to She wanna do it She wanna do it I mean she's great in that movie I love Marisa Tomei I would marry her today if she asked She wouldn't ask you

[00:24:30] She doesn't know you She doesn't know me You're also already engaged That's true To Forky Did... I ever tell the story on the podcast She also dated Logan Marshall Green Which is just a wild ass thing that she did Yeah When he was like 25 Yeah Yep

[00:24:46] Did I ever tell the story on the podcast That I saw Darren Aronofsky do like a Q&A Right You have definitely talked about this on the podcast Haven't you? I think so Or have I just told you in our private lives I can't remember if

[00:24:56] In our private lives And Tamara Jenkins is privately Yeah When we were in the theater Watching private lives Have you ever talked about this on the podcast? Maybe I kinda wanna spell it Very fun, go ahead Okay, so Then we have to talk about Rachel getting married

[00:25:08] Very good movie We're gonna talk about Rachel getting married I mean it's probably like 30 minutes Yeah Okay This is my internal clock Perfect We're ahead of schedule right now Did you like that noise I made? Yeah The wrestler Right after It loses the Oscars

[00:25:21] Darren Aronofsky did this Q&A And someone asked him a question About Mickey Rourke And he was like The fuck it The Oscars are over He's a nightmare Like I spent the last like 6 months Trying to like sell the narrative That he's like rehabilitated

[00:25:36] And he's like the fucking worst He's a baby And he just started spilling All the Mickey stories And he's like He's like a child And he's lazy Yeah He looks like a nightmare He didn't wanna do the movie Right I told him like Mickey you're unemployable

[00:25:50] No one's gonna give you a shot Ever again This is your only opportunity If you fuck this up Your career is over Like it's already dead No one else is gonna do this for you I'm the only one who's willing To like stake themselves on you

[00:26:01] And even still every day He'd do one take And be like I'm not feeling it And wanna like leave set Oh my god And he was like The only thing I could do Was treat him like A fucking little league coach And just like yell at him

[00:26:12] And be like You're a coward And you're a baby And you can't do this Everyone was right You're a shitty act there You're like Break Darren Aronofsky Maybe But the big thing he said was Marissa Tomei and Mickey Rourke Hated each other Yeah obviously She's a sweet angel

[00:26:29] And she was a pro She was a pro She comes prepared She does the homework She gets it in the first take Right But Mickey's like a nightmare And he has to spend like Six hours coaxing One usable take out of him So he would

[00:26:41] First thing in the morning Try to just get a two shot Of the two of them Well that's why Marissa cried Yeah Yeah No I'm sorry I flipped it First thing in the morning He found the PA That Marissa had a crush on And he would shoot

[00:26:56] Marissa's coverage With the PA off camera So that she had chemistry Oh my god That's hot That's crazy Then he would bring in Mickey for the two shot He would get it just as Like connective tissue Because there was barely Gonna be anything usable

[00:27:11] With both of them in the frame Right Then he would wrap Marissa And then he would bring in The PA that Mickey had a crush on And have her do the off camera That's scary That's scary I also think being the girl PA in this situation

[00:27:26] Would be frightening It's bad Very frightening But the moment when I have to kiss in the movie And there's one kiss Marissa was like Darren You're getting one second Out of me And he had five cameras On set And he's like The kiss is Like that one second

[00:27:41] Right Cut up From several different Pieces Angle shot from only one take Oh my god To make it seem like It's an actual genuine kiss And there you go It's a great story I do love Marissa for setting a boundary I'm being like Totally Mickey Mickey more

[00:27:59] I was like no No he looks like Phil He looks so bad And it's so sad Because he used to be like Handsome So pretty Hands such a hottie That's like Drugs, drinking, bad plastic surgery Yeah, boxing He's like really fucked his face up Right Like

[00:28:15] That's his claim is that he never had plastic surgery He just boxed too hard Because we all know All boxers look like Mickey Rourke No, there's like expired fillers in there Yes There's like bow tops like too early Like when people like hopped on the ship

[00:28:28] A little bit too early When they were like still experimenting His face is very strange It also, it looks like He got like skull extensions Like the entire shape of his head is He's always had a big head He has a huge head

[00:28:40] Yeah, he does have a big head But it's, yes It's definitely one of the most Beloved actors do as we know Of course, you have a big head That's how you look like You know who has a big head Anne Hathaway Well that's true

[00:28:50] I was going to say Sebastian Stan Oh, sure Wait, Anne Hathaway I can confirm Anne Hathaway has a huge head Really Because I One summer Did she have sort of the bobbly Big head Small body She is actually very tiny I always thought she'd be kind of tall

[00:29:03] But I worked at Shakespeare in the park one summer Congratulations Thank you And she came to a performance And I was like the person handing out Like the programs And I like handed her And I was like, oh do you need help getting to your seat

[00:29:14] And she's like, no I got it And I like looked at her And I was like, oh that's Anne Hathaway And my second thought was like Oh she has a huge head Wow And she's like She's like my height I'm like 5'4", she's like really tiny

[00:29:25] I saw Uma recently Big head And a play Big head on Uma She's tall I can see that She was taller than I am She's very tall I was very surprised how tall she was She's like 5'10", 5'11", 5'11' Wow Yeah

[00:29:38] She reads to me as a tall person She's a tall person Big head though Well, I guess to scale Is Ethan tall? Huh? Ethan Hawke No I think Ethan shorter than her He's kind of like 5'9", 9'10", because I've met him before

[00:29:51] I think he's an honest 5'10", yeah So I'm gonna say like I'm gonna go 5'9", 9'5", and he rounds up He's a regular sized person But But most actors who are 5'6", say they're 5'10", exactly Yeah So 5'10", usually feels like a false height

[00:30:04] With him I think he's actually close to 5'10", that makes me He has like a good 5'10", energy He's got like a solid, like he's confident enough Without being too arrogant Rachel getting married though Okay Starring Sebastian Stan It's just funny that he's first listed

[00:30:19] Sebastian Stan is really open and it's like Sebastian Stan Yeah And at the time we were probably just like Oh who's this? And now I'm like It was awesome Yes There's a few people in this movie who did that for me Sure Okay there's this guy, Boshaw

[00:30:35] He plays the friend of Tunde Adibin Oh he's a guy from TV on the radio Yes So that's kind of, he's one of those guys for me, Tunde is And then also Boshaw did like Def Jam poetry and I just like

[00:30:52] We used to like watch a lot of those He's the guy with the shaved head Yes Where as the sunglasses during this speech Yes Oh the sunglasses are so like 2008 There's no movie It's like the whole movie is just like Oh my god

[00:31:02] I know it's like I just keep writing 2008 Because like no other time could you just like See these two people having like an Indian wedding Indian wedding Oh my god With all their little like chachkes They're so crunchy though It was like this is fully 2008

[00:31:17] And somebody who was planning their wedding around this time And so it must have been like Oh we have to have little name plates with like Little figurines The cake is like that elephant That's, feels especially 2008 Where they've attached the name tags To different figurines

[00:31:32] Different types of figure representations Of living creatures To organize the tables It is beautiful when a movie is such A time capsule without trying to be Hip Yeah, yeah, yeah At the moment it was made It just perfectly I think there's some of her braces there

[00:31:47] On coolness in a weird way Yes Like they're just like these crunchy Annoying hippies But in sort of a well meaning way So you're kind of like on board with it When I was reading up on it Yeah And reading as much as I could

[00:32:00] People kept on referring in sort of like The writing about the making of the film Bill Irwin's character being a music executive Do they ever say that in the movie? They might briefly elude Not really But the idea is that's why there's all these musicians Around and stuff

[00:32:17] Right Oh I love the like musicians always Just kind of being in the back Yeah Because that was Demi's concept No score, just musicians around Trying to give music It feels like Shakespearean almost Like it's always like a trip of like Rustic players It feels like a player

[00:32:29] Right because he was like I want to do a movie My whole career I've been trying to find A good excuse to do a movie with a live score Where you actually have musicians on screen Playing music, improvising Based off of what's happening in the scene Yeah

[00:32:41] Well he's got taste He loves music Loves music Because I feel like you've got this script That's sort of like a pretty intense Barebones family drama Jenny Lumet who had been an actress Was in a bunch of Sidney Lumet's movies Her father Then acts a little more

[00:32:57] Outside the Sidney Lumet canon And then Mary's Bobby Cannavale I respect Mary's Bobby Cannavale Iconic Big mood Big mood And then her career kind of like disappears And she's teaching drama At a high school in the city I think it may be even a middle school What?

[00:33:16] In the city Writing Spec scripts That you can't get made And She finally says to her father My dream is to have Jonathan Demi Direct this Can you Pass it along to him Nepotism at its finest But he reads this and goes

[00:33:31] Oh this script is actually really good And agrees to make it I feel like Demi is in kind of a weird period Because he's coming off of his like His remake Remake Happy Did he change it? He did Mentoring Canada And Truth About Charlie back to back

[00:33:46] Yes, which is the remake of Shrade Not changeling, Shrade And those two are coming off of Beloved But also He's also been in his big documentary He's been churning out the docs That's the big thing He's done like The Agronomist And Neil Young One of the Neil Young's

[00:34:02] There's so many of those And Jimmy Carter one Neil Young's songs in this Yeah Yes But I think he was tired Of making these like Massive studio dramas Like he made like three studio dramas That cost like over 60 million in a row Yeah And all kind of under-performance

[00:34:20] Big studio movies with big stars Mentoring did it Did okay But the other one is less maybe Right Gets the script Mentoring had the Denzel thing Yes Denzel will just get you more money Yes Yeah But this was also The Denzel ceiling Sure He's not going to make

[00:34:37] 300 million dollars in the price of it But he'll probably get you A near 100 Because I think Denzel doesn't A measly hundred It's very good A measly hundred I love a hundred million dollars I love it right now I get so excited when A movie hits that century mark

[00:34:52] I know well we're silly babies I want to throw up parades Yes I want to give them a trophy But yes I think he sees the script He's like I would like to make something It's intimate and character based And I can use the style

[00:35:05] I've developed with my documentary Especially now because Mumblecore is such a thing Yes Well it's yeah Yeah that's just firing up Right They've sort of broken the ground For like you can make this kind Of movie with like Consumer cameras High-end consumer cameras Pro-sumer cameras Yes

[00:35:21] Okay that's our fault And Apparently immediately wanted Hathaway He had always wanted her He saw her at a party Or a screening or something Years earlier and had been like Wow look at her I should do a movie with her Like he hadn't seen her perform

[00:35:37] He just saw her as a person I'm sure he'd seen her perform Did he see Princess Diaries? I want to believe you I would love I would love to believe that Jonathan Demme saw Princess Diaries And was like That girl is a talent Yeah she is good

[00:35:48] In that movie She is incredibly good in that movie That movie's great Isn't seeing that that is It still holds up Oh totally Princess Diaries holds up more than the reader You could be in 2018 as a website No question What are you looking at David?

[00:36:01] The Rachel Getting Married website Oh my god I miss movie websites And when you can go And you can get A wallpaper For your computer A wallpaper For your computer Oh Rachel getting married wallpaper For my computer Does this website have buddy icons? Awww

[00:36:16] A A A M buddy icons? Yeah I don't think so But I do remember that Muscle of Dogs The great Diana Garza Yes a great film Its official website had Check the showtimes Yeah I'm not seeing any showtimes It's linking me to a movie phone

[00:36:30] Which I believe does not exist anymore Oh I miss movie phones Well there you go One day maybe No there's no need I don't need it I just miss it But Muscle of Dogs The official screensaver was just A dog would come up to the screen

[00:36:44] And lick it And then another one would come up to the screen And lick it So it was like a dog was inside your computer Looking at the screen That's awesome It was my screensaver for many years That's perfect technology Yes it was

[00:36:53] That was the apex of technology And then we just gave up on screensavers It was just Yeah It was kind of that Everyone uses the defaults these days I feel like it also creates Or they just I'm gonna start directing Screensavers DVD menus This is huge for you

[00:37:07] Screensaver That's my new thing It's gonna be good It's gonna be high on the IMDb Be the next big space Yeah Yeah I was definitely one of those kids where If I saw a movie and liked it Like I went to an afternoon Saturday screening with my father

[00:37:22] And my brother And I liked the movie I would rush home at 3pm Go to the official website And download everything Yeah Like I would just take the family computer The gateway 2000 And I would be like It's all death to smoochie now Wallpaper Screensaver Icons So cool

[00:37:39] You're such a cool kid I was a cool kid I would just put it on my wall And put it on my wall Because I would do that 100% Or the newspaper Like the weekend New York Times Where you'd get the color Full page Tape them up

[00:37:51] Had gold member Definitely on my wall Proudly on my wall You guys are looking at each other That's where you lost us In terms of just age I feel Well I was an Entertainment Weekly Teenager It was like a huge thing for me

[00:38:03] And I would cut stuff out Or I would just keep An issue that I really liked Just forever And then I had to go through All my stuff at home And I was like I don't really need this Entertainment Weekly From like 2010

[00:38:14] I had a shelf in my childhood closet That was every Entertainment Weekly save Yeah They were good Then 10 years later I just had to throw out Would you flip to the bullseye first? The only way to read an Entertainment Weekly Yes Although this was This was I mean

[00:38:31] It started pre-bullseye This was another age thing I remember when the bullseye came in And at first I was resistant You know I was like I'm not afraid of you This isn't EW Too quick Too quick I want them to go deep EW also used to have like

[00:38:46] Vlogs That I At circa 2008 That I used to come home from school And see like What the staffers of EW Were like vlogging about that day Very odd time And like media Or they were like Does this work? I don't know Do you remember when Diablo Cody

[00:39:03] Had a regular column in EW Yes And it was clear They reached out to her Before Juno came out And she agreed to do it And then Juno came out And she suddenly had a thousand jobs And didn't want to be writing it anymore

[00:39:15] And they became sort of like Just shopping-less Like it was just sort of Whatever document she had Lying around her house I remember her blog too Her blog was awesome Really cool She had a cool blog She had a cool blog That was back in the day, man

[00:39:28] You could have a cool blog I know It's crazy to think about it now I miss blogs Me too Let's bring them back Yeah Let's do blogs again Whenever you watched Julia and Julia Where I was like Damn, you really could blog

[00:39:40] You really could just blog about whatever I've got an idea for a blog Okay, here's the question Okay, honest to blog It's honest to blog Here's my question Which killed blogs harder? Twitter or podcasts? Twitter Twitter You think? Yeah, easily Twitter completely destroyed the blog

[00:39:56] You think that was the... The sort of RSS feed in general That's the way also I think people now are like Oh, I can get a glimpse into your thoughts Like and like Get a glimpse of your voice I suppose now Newsletters is beginning to sort of

[00:40:08] Crop up as like a blog s Me too Newsletters And I think also there's definitely a disdain Because like in comedy You send one email to someone You're on one show with someone And then all of a sudden You're subscribed to their newsletter That's so rude

[00:40:24] Like come on We have to have some sort of Consent conversation here I don't care 100% I don't care about what shows you're doing There has to be An opt in There has to be You can't automatically put me on that list Let's go back to the kinder days 2008

[00:40:39] Please It's October 2008 It's fall its your turn Barack Obama is running for the presidency He's about to be elected Right A month from now Yeah Rachel's getting married Played by Rosemary DeWitt In a charming and wonderful performance So good I just want to shout out

[00:40:56] Rosemary DeWitt's Jennifer Gray-esque nose That I have a huge crush on She's got a great profile She's got a very distinctive nose She's got like a long face A long beautiful face I am glad that you Rosemary DeWitt from the United States of Terra A Diablo Cody show

[00:41:11] Is this true? Oh, okay I didn't realize she was on that I remember when she was on that show With Ron Livingston I mean obviously the United States of Terra Was Tony Collette And Tony Collette And Tony Collette And I don't think they ever actually pulled that

[00:41:23] Maybe they did Literally wore many hats on that show Wait do you know who was also with it What's his name His name is Cure Tony Collette Tony Collette Yeah He was so The crazy thing is that Brie Larson was also in it Yes

[00:41:36] I mean it was a stacked cast Yes And also Tony Collette Tony Collette was on You always forget that Tony Collette Was on United States of Terra Well I remember that she was on it But then also There was also and Tony Collette As Trucker Bill

[00:41:49] Or whatever the fuck Or fourth personality What's the last time a movie did that Multiple personalities No in the trailer Spilling people Like Split, excuse me They just did it I swear to God Really? There's some double movie that just pulled that Oh you know what does it

[00:42:03] The Paul Rudd Netflix show Yes that's one The poster is Paul Rudd Paul Rudd Yeah Yeah both above the title But that thing where they bill them as if they're separate people Like the Norbit The Eddie Murphy Eddie Murphy What I always loved was just like Eddie Murphy

[00:42:18] So many of those TV shows at the time It was like This guy's got a family And also there's another thing about it Yes And the same with the One husband Two kids And I'm like Okay this is crazy Normal grade I know how TV works Multiple personalities

[00:42:34] What? Whoa I feel sick I feel absolutely fucking sick I don't care that she has a family Like That's not what I get I need something for the B story No that was the draw for me I would fast forward through the altar scenes

[00:42:47] But whenever they were on the family But the original Sopranos poster Yes If one family doesn't kill the other one But I'm like That's a gorgeous poster One of them is just his family It is a great poster Right Because your family is crazy

[00:42:59] But it's like your family kill you And they're like Oh my God They're killing me And then these other families are like Hey I'll kill you with a gun Exactly Are you Italian? Yeah I'm fully Italian I'm a dirty non-Italian Okay I'll just be

[00:43:12] Yeah be careful about that Okay Tread lightly David Alright So what if the Sopranos come for me I don't know You would be done for You would be whacked He reads the script He's been making documentaries Mumblecore's been poppin He's been stuck in Over-budgeted studio land Terrible sin

[00:43:30] Mumblecore's poppin Mumblecore is poppin hard Everyone loves it Funny ha ha Mutual appreciation Has Hannah yet taken the stairs? Hannah I believe has taken the stairs at this point Wow I think that was 07 Dude have we heard talk Heard about the beeswax

[00:43:45] No we haven't heard about the beeswax We haven't Beeswax Was there a puffy chair Were you about to say beeswax kind of fucks Yeah It's a pretty good movie I like some of them The Bajowski ones are good I feel like puffy chair was first wave

[00:43:57] Puffy chair stinks That's a stinker I liked it at the time And I cannot imagine how much I would hate myself Now watching it It's the Kevin Smith of that era Yes A lot of those Mumblecore movies Where you watch it now and you're like

[00:44:09] I get that this was different Yes And that it was sort of exciting To see someone make something like this This cheaply with absolutely no good script And kind of bad acting But now I'm just like Scripts not good and the acting's bad

[00:44:22] Wait why do I like this The Bajalskis are good The Bajalskis are good I think they all hold up The other ones I think that hold up Are the Aaron Katz films Yeah, yeah, yeah Well he's good And I think all the other ones are Garbanzio So-so Yes

[00:44:35] Swanburckin's But that suckin' dick I mean Thank you for saying it I didn't have to But You get to say it in a half a way I just felt like the winds of time hit me Because I was trying to remember We've been half a way

[00:44:50] I was like dazed out thinking about Swanburckin Initially wanted Right we're so young Of Thomas Anderson Yes To play the husband Wait in this movie? What? Correct Paul Thomas Anderson was gonna play I actually that's I mean The time they didn't play Whoa

[00:45:06] Okay I think also that would make this A completely different movie Because I think one of the Like subtle things about it is Like this is an interracial Yes And like that adds to the whole The whole Yeah Paul Thomas Anderson Paul Thomas Anderson

[00:45:18] So it's written by Jenny Lumet Who is mixed race Yes I don't know I don't know what her script looked like Because the movie is so non scripty In a way It's unclear Exactly But Paul Thomas Anderson did The table read Wow

[00:45:31] And then a week later was like I'm sorry Jonathan He was working on There Will Be Blood He was in post production And he was like I don't think I'm gonna finish this in time I really need to focus on this edit Wait this is crazy

[00:45:42] He was that close to doing it That's so nuts How can I get him to act in something I don't know I don't know It drives me crazy That's crazy He never did anything like that before I need to know the table PaulThomasAndersonatExample.com Okay Okay

[00:45:57] But Demi was like He was really good He was really charming I always was trying to get him to act And you're like I'm happy We all agree Is there alternate reality In which Paul Thomas Anderson Has like a little Spike Jonze side career Where he's done a

[00:46:11] Handful of supporting performance When you said that I immediately thought of Spike Jonze's husband And money ball Where he shows up And you're like Oh, right Who do you think could get PaulThomasAnderson Like Demi seems obviously No because he's like an icon I think Demi was the guy

[00:46:26] I think he would have to be One of his contemporaries I think probably Spike could get him to do it I think Tarantino could get him to do it Tarantino Any of the guys He kind of came up with In his generation Maybe

[00:46:38] But Demi was the big one The only actor That is his idol It's definitely not just like a contemporary It's like an icon Right Yes The only acting role If you count this That he has done Is playing the Jonathan Demi analogue Off camera

[00:46:54] In two episodes of documentary now What about Which is great But what about that He's in Minority Report But no one can find him Oh, right Apparently he's in Minority Report There's like The scene where Cameron Crowe Is on the train And he's looking at Tom Cruise What?

[00:47:09] And you're like Oh, that's Cameron Crowe A cameo from a director Yeah, we love that We know that But apparently PaulThomasAnderson Is also on that train somewhere That's so odd to me And he's like Even I can't find myself But I'm on there somewhere Because they're like

[00:47:21] Eight directors in Minority Report Yeah What a funny little thing for Spielberg To be like I'm to throw him in there Yeah, that's awesome man Why not That's my buddies And that's not the same year But Spielberg showing up In Vanilla Sky Thank God Was the weird

[00:47:37] Like swap With him Ah, son of a bitch How you doing I'm friends with Tom You're friends with Tom We're all friends with Tom We all hate Vanilla Sky I mean Do you like Vanilla Sky I kind of love Vanilla Sky I'm so, so unfunous

[00:47:50] You're thinking it about it You're like mulling it over Not that hard though But you hate it You confidently hate it What do they say about coming in that movie When there's a scary line about coming I swallowed your comment That means something When you have sex

[00:48:05] Your body makes a promise Is that When you have sex Is that the line? Yes When you have sex Your body makes a promise I swallowed your comment That means something She says that to Tom Cruise Is that true Yeah, just the two of us

[00:48:17] Just looking at each other like no It almost means less You can argue about whether or not it's true It is my ringtone That's why you're coming That means something Yeah, Cameron Diaz is crying That's psychotic It's probably not me or something What I was going to say

[00:48:35] Anne Hathaway I was trying to remember How I got onto this Vroom vroom Yeah Oscar vehicle Yes A thing I think we didn't even have perspective on At the time but Demi seemed to tap into Was We've covered a weird amount of Anne Hathaway on the show

[00:48:50] That's true I took her out last night Nolan This is the seventh Anne Hathaway Wait, so what apart from the Interstellar The two-nigh rises The two-nigh rises The intern Yes, of course Brokeback Mountain Of course Devil Wears product Yes, that's right And there's one other one I'm forgetting

[00:49:06] Leading up to this is the seventh Les Mis Not Les Mis Who's another auteur That she worked with There's one other one I'm forgetting There's seven There's really seven Let's see I'm not seeing a seventh We didn't do Brides, Bride Wars Oh, Alison Wonderland Thank you

[00:49:25] But she is it She is Anne She's the white queen Oh yeah She was in it And she does a lot of this That movie just doesn't Yeah, no, it doesn't really hit No Oh, it doesn't haunt you at every waking moment You are very, very lucky No

[00:49:40] Yeah I see Alison Wonderland when I close my eyes I'm on my pee, sorry Yeah, light flashes That's too bad The thing that stupid people throw at Hathaway as a criticism is like the drama kid thing Right? Yeah We've talked about it That's annoying

[00:49:59] It's annoying and it's dumb and it's bad And it's wrong That's what makes her a good actress It's also like literally like what you're saying when the people say that is like I can see her like trying or like I can see her like working

[00:50:11] And it's like acting as a job Calm down I want actresses to make it feel like they're not working and they don't care and it's just sort of like luck that they're as good at what they do She didn't feel natural to people, I think

[00:50:23] But I don't really buy that But I think she, I think that's not actually true I think people were like looking at press circuit things and being like oh you're a tryhard so now we don't like you But I also will say I think the best ones Yes

[00:50:38] I don't think she really had that rep in 2008 I will say Here's what I want to say That was later I think she gets that rep post-2008 where people think she's looking for an Oscar Her rep, of course early on is that she is at Disney Princess

[00:50:50] Yes, she's in Princess Diaries She's in Ella Enchanted She said that she felt stuck after that No She does Princess Diaries too She does Princess Diaries too A royal engagement In which they mattress serve Yes, it's an iconic scene Raven Simone Yes Julie Andrews on the mattress

[00:51:06] And then she starts She does a few Really fun behind the scenes video on that on DVDXS I feel like she does havoc in this way of being like I am going to be in a fucking grown up movie

[00:51:16] and it's the only way I can sort of like escape Disney And it goes direct to video Yeah, that thing sucks And then she does broke back which she's good in but I feel like does sort of get the least respect It's a princessy thing to it probably

[00:51:29] And even if she gets the least respect I think the mere fact that Ang Lee hired her gives her credibility with other directors Yes, and then she's in Devil Wears Product which is a hit Obviously Meryl is like the big story about it but still

[00:51:41] And she talks about that she was like seventh choice Everyone else turned it down She fought really hard to get that movie Then she played Jane Austen in Becoming Jane which is a terrible piece of casting and a terrible movie So don't worry about that

[00:51:54] I feel like that's sort of like someone's idea of like a costuming Oscar movie I've already forgotten what you're talking about I can't believe we let her be British again after that That's very enough And then in 2008 she does this and she does Get Smart Oh, it's smart

[00:52:10] I literally saw Get Smart in theaters Someone touched like boob during Get Smart Really? Wow Like, overly or a brush Just a brush No, yeah, yeah, deliberately Is it the rock in that movie? Yes I went to Get Smart as I didn't realize this at the time

[00:52:27] but as a third wheel to two people who wanted to hook up Yeah So how's that movie? Smart, the horniest movie of 2008 45 minutes into the movie they left the theater went to their parked car in the parking lot and gave each other blowjobs And you finished Get Smart

[00:52:46] I was like, stay here and watch it What is there for me in the parking lot? Nothing, I'll finish Get Smart I'll ride this out till the end With Rachel getting married She's a serious role Yes She does a great job I thought I was like

[00:53:00] I got felt up during Rachel getting married Right? I mean, it would not have been I know, I did not see that in theaters I saw it in theaters Can I say one final thing about Get Smart? Sure Yes, I think I saw it by myself

[00:53:13] Do you remember that in Get Smart Are you okay? Well, I moved to New York in 2008 and I saw Huh, what? Well, you pumped the fucking brakes You mean, wait, I'm sorry Done with my sentence I think he's trying to pump them That's the issue

[00:53:25] No, let me just explain What David is saying is that he moved from Manhattan to Brooklyn in 2008 Because he was born and raised in New York Okay, I get it Sorry I knew he was born and raised in New York and now he lives in Brooklyn Right

[00:53:39] I moved to Brooklyn in 2008 from London What? Where I spent a lot of my analysts Wait, how much time did you spend in London? 13 years Wait, what's going on? It was the longest vacation That's crazy long Did you go to like secondary school? I did

[00:53:52] Did you get an accent? I did Wow But you dropped it? When I came back, it kind of went away Did you feel persecuted for it? Yes Where in London did you live? Kiddish Town Oh, that's nice Yeah, it was great Like at a hotel

[00:54:06] It was like an extended stay You fucking piece of shit It's like a Florida project thing Was it a Utahstall? Kiddish Town project Dyslington I first lived in Dyslington but quickly moved to Kiddish Town I was going to say something So I just moved to New York

[00:54:22] I didn't have a lot of friends so I would see a lot of movies by myself including this one You feel very British to me now Now you see it And Rachel, wait I had a point to make The mic was in front of

[00:54:35] a chunk of his face Oh, so now the part that the mic was covering is the British part He's very British You can't see this because obviously this is an audio medium But as soon as David started revealing I think his truth If I may say that

[00:54:48] about his British heritage which he's been hiding I think out of fear and shame I don't want to project This is just what I'm reading Your posture changed Something shifted in you as you were able to tell the story Of your liberation

[00:54:59] I was able to see your face from the front You started sipping tea too Yeah, it's really crazy He pulled a little whole set It's obviously completely fucked up It's got one of the tall furry hats on Oh, you mean like a member of the Royal Guard

[00:55:10] Like I've got that on? They should host a podcast The Royal Guard? Those guys who famously don't speak It'll be like sound stuff Yeah I want to talk about It was good as a bit and then people delved in too much I just wanted to know

[00:55:24] I want to talk about and post this Because I feel like this when she gets her nomination everyone's like, good job What was the last thing you were going to say about Get Smart? Thank you We're going to talk about this game It better not be about

[00:55:36] the rock getting smaller big because you've already talked about it No, no, no, I'm talking about that This is a different thing I want to talk about that I don't think it's discussed enough They were so on guard about the age difference between Steve Burrell and Anne Halfway

[00:55:49] being creepy even though almost every studio comedy has an age difference that insane that they explain in the movie that she is in her 40s but she had surgery to hold like she's in her 20s to go undercover How old when the years older

[00:56:04] do you think Steve is to Anne? 20 25 Yes, you're correct It's 20 Exactly, he had it on the nose I think the reason that they would be so off-put by that is because it's like when Leo does it where Leo's hot and it doesn't matter and when Steve Burrell

[00:56:17] it was like pre-hot Steve Burrell and some people were like this is weird Okay, wait When do you think Steve Burrell was at his hottest? When was he like I think it was when he was doing press for Foxcatcher I also think it was

[00:56:30] when he was doing press for Foxcatcher He does wear the brain though Very handsome Can I say when I think he was hot? When? Way, way back I never saw that movie Oh, I like that movie It's kinda cute That movie is way, way back Way, way back

[00:56:43] They've got their force majority coming out next year Yeah Ayo, thank you so much Why are they re-making that? You're welcome I don't know Anyway, but then post this Here's some of the stuff she does post Okay, yes Bride Wars is her media follow-up My hair is blue

[00:56:57] No, it's Kate Hudson's hair who's blue Oh, sorry It's blue I can't yell but of course iconic moment And then Valentine's Day I don't even remember what she does in that one Oh, Psycho Is she crazy in that one? Is she couple with Patrick Dempsey in that movie?

[00:57:16] No Wait All of those movies blend together I'm thinking about New Year's Eve What's the one with Halle Berry? Is that Valentine's Day or is that New Year's? That's New Year's Because she plays Robert De Niro's nurse Yeah Who's married to Common overseas in the war

[00:57:30] This straight up gave me attention Let's get off Valentine's Day Austin Wonderland, supporting love Love and other drugs Not a good one No Rio, One Day You know, these are not hits No, One Day is a weird movie That's what I meant

[00:57:47] I can't believe we let her do that again Yeah, the movie does suck And so I feel like at this point people are getting a little That's when people start to get really kind of edgy about Anna When does she host the Oscars? That would be

[00:58:01] That's a great question 2011 So that's the year I feel like her hosting the Oscars was peak because she spent so much time trying to make up for James Franco that it was just her firing on all cylinders and we were like, we hate this

[00:58:14] And it was also crazy that that is not even her fault It was just the way that we But she got tagged with it Yeah, and that's the way that we could process things then Franco's move was just like this is gonna suck

[00:58:25] so I'm just gonna turn off so that I Yeah, and everybody was like we like that We like that instead What was the year when Hugh Jackman brought her up to sing? That's O8 Okay, got it That's her reach of getting married I feel like this kind of

[00:58:38] trajectory That's what people like to do That's what I'm saying Right, and that was also the like, SNL was popping They were like we found the two young hot people who have done well on SNL this season as well Right, right So they'll nail it

[00:58:50] They said that they were like Franco and Hathaway, we hire them because they were good on SNL Like if you think about it for two seconds you're like those energies don't work together It's insane, it's a weird Terrible Do you remember her defense was anyone would look like

[00:59:00] Tasmanian devil sharing a stage with James Franco Yes She was like that was such a cutting line It was such a dead weight that she had to deal with But then in 2012 she does Dark Knight Rises or whatever and Les Mis She wins the Oscar

[00:59:13] she says it came true And I think everyone is just sick to death of her I feel like she's rebounded People are It's just hard to be the type of girl who it's like your whole energy is you had an Audrey Hepburn poster on your wall Yes

[00:59:26] You know what I mean It came true was such a moment It came true was the point It was like oh bitch we all practice in our mirror But you can't actually do the practice You don't do the speech you can Don't do the practice run Exactly

[00:59:38] She really thought she was having a Sally Field moment It was like a knoll She took her a couple years but then when she's an interstellar and then the intern and then like colossal And she's kind of the best thing about Ocean's Aid She's cool again in colossal

[00:59:49] Best performance she's really good So now I feel like people have sort of gotten over all that bullshit All that her 2019 was rough Serenity of Serenity Serenity of Serenity She's actually good in Dark Waters Yeah but that's and halfway should not be playing that role

[01:00:03] Every one of that movie it's basically a charity donation They're like oh Mark he's raising issues sure we'll be in the movie This is his thing I'm hopeful for 2020 for her Well her 2020 is she is in Zemeckis' remake of The Witches She's the lead witch

[01:00:21] The Grand High Witch I'm so sorry Set in Null Limbs Robert Zemeckis doing a Null Limbs of Witches Never mind I'm seeing this film is being brought up on High Crimes Oh you like some Raw Doll Gumbo Oh God Now on in the bed Written by Kenya Barris

[01:00:40] Nothing's easy No This is fucking wild Who's in that cast Octavia Spencer Yes Stanley Tuch- here look Run it down the full cast We just gotta do this Run it down the full cast No no no first screenplay credits Kenya Barris Guillermo del Toro Robert Zemeckis Duh three

[01:00:59] The three The big three We really have to talk about Rachel getting in We do we will We are in a way Cast Anne Hathaway Octavia Spencer Stanley Tuchy Chris Rock What? This is extremely one of those movies Where it's like what are those people talking about

[01:01:21] I don't know what's going on But that's what is happening That's coming out next year Thank God Okay you trying to get zooted and booted to see that Absolutely It's gonna come out In the prime Rachel getting married slot Right before an election Let's go

[01:01:37] Wait are they running is it coming out in the fall October twenty-fourth As an awards play And are they running as a Democratic play It's running under the chaos slate Gotcha Wow That sounds great She's supposed to do the Sesame Street movie Alright whatever Whatever

[01:01:55] That's gonna be something That'll be a smaller role No she's the human lead I know that but the Sesame Street ensemble I assume will sort of be She was just in Modern Love which everyone hated Yeah That was just one episode right You do one episode

[01:02:09] Was she good in the episode No Olivia you cannot prove that Modern Love exists That's fair I believe it was renewed for a second see I think Modern Love is mostly subway ads Yes I don't think it's an actual It's direct to subway ads

[01:02:21] It's direct to subway ads Dr. Zizmour's network Yes What's the subway ads in the food chain This is more plus yeah You can get all this original content And Steve cleaning or whatever What did Zizmour do no He did like The front peel Yeah he did chemical peel

[01:02:36] Wait who did Dr. Zizmour He was like the king of the subway ad Yeah But Rachel got married Is she married I gotta say I love the When she gets married I love the wedding Oh you love the like Rachel And Rachel Zizmour Zizmour Rachel

[01:02:54] I think the wedding is really sweet I think the wedding is really lovely Even though it is hilarious That they're all in fucking sorry And you're like oh my god It's just like one of those The house is gorgeous Gorgeous and huge The house is like stunning

[01:03:09] What I love about the house Is that you don't know how big it is But it feels like there's like more The back yard It's like Ramshaw It's a house in Connecticut They shot it in Connecticut Did they say it was Connecticut Or could I just tell

[01:03:22] They mentioned Connecticut tax law Yes okay I mean hey No income tax in Connecticut Yeah Welcome to Connecticut Good you start That's my bill Irwin Bill Irwin a friend of Demi's A friend of a Incredible in this mood Tar's himself He is Tar Mr. Noodle's brother

[01:03:44] Yes Mr. Noodle Yes But do you guys respect and stand Tar's Tar's from Interstellar The Roma from Interstellar He's inside that thing Oh wait he's Tar's He is Tar's that's great Who are we Physically giving that performance on set Absolute giver Oh well then we love that

[01:03:59] We stand Doing all the things Well if he's a clown Yes He's a little clown He's a tall clown Yeah I really want to see him live I saw him live once Can I throw out a big brag He did a show with David Sheiner

[01:04:15] I'm sure he's really excited Old Haas You're talking about Old Haas I'm talking about Fool Moon Oh okay It's called Fool Moon Well he also did a show with David Sheiner Called Old Haas Okay but this one was called Fool Yes no I know we all know

[01:04:29] And I went to see it on Broadway When I was four years old And they brought me on stage Oh my nightmare is that it It was a kid Yeah And would bring him on stage And put a hat on their head or something I did it

[01:04:41] An old hat So I have a Broadway credit One time I went to a Sinbad show With my parents and he did crowd work with me What What did he say Did he ask you where you were from Or anything like that

[01:04:52] Yeah he asked me where I was from What did I do What was my hobbies If I had any questions or problems And then I told him Real serious questions And then he solved it in a very funny way Really Really That's why that guy's a fucking pro

[01:05:04] I said my dad wouldn't let me play sports Because he thinks I'm a girl and I shouldn't play sports And he gave a really funny answer What was his answer Let's talk about Rachel getting married Okay so The plot of Rachel getting married Is that Rachel Yes

[01:05:20] Is getting married But you start out with Sebastian Stan You do start out with Sebastian Stan He wants his Zippo lighter All he wants is his Zippo And then halfway like Fucked that nurse Is that the implication That's how I realized Because the nurse is like

[01:05:34] It was a mistake It was a one time thing And Anna forgot your number And she's like no no no And then there's also Griffin if you give me your hand She does this sort of like Kim Good luck No I just need one hand

[01:05:46] You know what I'm talking about She does this sort of pat on the ham We're like oh kind of intimate The way you did it to me right now Felt more disciplinary Should I Do it to me Good luck to you Kim

[01:05:57] See that's what friendship looks like David Good luck to you That's what it looks like And there's like a gentle sort of thumb swipe There's like a thumb swipe I'm a bad performer Yeah There's some good hand stuff in this movie

[01:06:08] There's also the part where they're cutting the cake And the mom puts her hand on Rachel The pull away And it's like very sweet But then she pulls away so quick So Kim is in rehab Played by Ann Hathaway She's going You know

[01:06:21] She's getting released for this wedding Tars is going to pick her up Tars goes to pick her up He turns into like a little asterisk And he rolls down the road So Anna DeVere Smith Which is crazy This also was the movie where the whole time

[01:06:33] I was like What does Jonathan to me listen to? He goes to two concerts a week He goes to some bar that has like World music night or whatever Like a little patron of the art He is He was a Haitian art collector He was

[01:06:47] Okay we have to talk about it And you watch like this movie And you're like Okay you have like emerging Broadway people Established people You got the lead singer Anna Lee Ashford in the Yes Anna Lee Ashford You're a Marin Ireland I see you on cost

[01:07:00] That line is so good Because you're immediately like What did this girl do? Yes and you're also like Oh right 2008 It was still a time where You could like wake up at 3am On your couch And cops was playing on the TV And that was just society

[01:07:11] But you have like Marin Ireland Yeah the wedding Yes There's another big Broadway person Who has like popped since then Who I am Bernadette Peters Forgetting Housebarks is in the 12th Step Oh yeah Yes You have like Fab Five Freddy Yes You have an American Idol Season 1 contestant

[01:07:31] Whose name I'm forgetting Tamara Gray Yes Oh she plays She's a singer No sister She's the girl who like sings Roger Coriman Roger Coriman is among the audience That's true We already said gender But he's the lead singer On the radio and he's just there

[01:07:45] Which is at its height It is You know they're the coolest It's peak And he's like still cartooning And shit He's cool He had been in this British movie Called Jump Tomorrow Which he's really good in Like did before He's very charming on screen He had also been

[01:07:59] Do you know this An animator on Celebrity Deathmatch Oh I know that his wife I did not know that Was a part of the animation studio The pizza Yeah Not Pizza Island No Pizza Island Pizza Island yes Yeah and that like Kate Beaton and Julia Wurz

[01:08:14] And Lisa Hanowals Oh Pizza Island Lisa Hanowals Yeah everyone was cool Merit of Grand Octopus Pie So we're just living in a Really cool universe right now Yeah Right He knows cool people And he has good taste And this movie to some degree Feels like an excuse

[01:08:28] To just be like I will pay to bring everyone here And see what happens To this ball mass house in Connecticut But in doing that This is the only movie I have ever seen That actually feels like Being at a wedding Yes Yes especially

[01:08:44] It's like a sort of one location Wedding where there's like A lot of you know chaos And all the altos And the energy of that Because no one is just like A background actor in this The people who are in the background

[01:08:53] Are like is that the person from that Band or that novelist? Oh the guy who plays the guy also What's his name? Matthew Zickel Matthew Zickel Yeah Yeah Yeah That guy He's just, he is that guy Well back then I feel like

[01:09:06] He was in a lot of ads He was you know He was like around I feel like He was like a state adjacent guy Yes He was one of those like Like a re-no 911 Dramatic actors that the state Members would use a lot In their shows

[01:09:17] Cause he has like a voice He's got like a sort of Commanding, surrounding voice He could do a lot of voice over Stuff And he looks kind of like A cartoon version of a handsome person Yeah Yes exactly He's very handsome But he has that sort of like

[01:09:28] Overly perfect macho vibe So she, yeah exactly Kim gets to this thing Immediately sleeps with the best man Played by Matthew Zickel Kim with a Y Yes Kim with a Y Ben is adjusting my microphone Kim with a Y Immediately bangs the best man

[01:09:44] And is like ha ha Is it funny the main of honor The best man Well because they see each other at A A Right And she like comes in Yes Which is a fun little like Character trait Really good A clot And she's a great physical Comedian

[01:09:58] She used to be very funny Very good But then she learns She's not the main of honor Not the main of honor I just liked that I just liked that where She's like obviously I'm the main of honor And she has to like sleep With the fucking

[01:10:09] She's best man for him To be like oh I think it's like this Random corner The cool thing about this movie Is that every scene There's no scene where there Isn't like a crazy conflict That's true Every single scene There's like a problem Except for the sweetest scene

[01:10:22] In the movie at the end Oh yes But that's That's why that scene Feels so powerful But finally the tension Is gone Every scene up until then It's like there's always a bomb Under the table Even 100% Like I'm thinking about Like the plates The dishwasher scene Which is

[01:10:37] Oh god So good So funny I need more dishes And then it's like You're like so in it And then just like Cut Just perfectly I mean biller When should have been Oscar nominated Do you know that he won When he cries on the couch I love him

[01:10:52] Bill Irwin won best supporting actor From the AARP Movies for grownups award Did he Good for him Let's see Let's find out who he beat That's right We're going deep my friend Yes he did Winger was also nominated But she did not win She is also extraordinary

[01:11:10] And that's great Well Irwin is 69 He can absolutely still get it Oh he beat Oh my god What a group Here's Brosnan Okay Burt Malkovich for burnt after reading Pierce they put in a supporting rather than lead Yeah he's supporting The men are supporting them

[01:11:25] All the men are supporting him They all have one song And they all like come in and out And Pierce is bad at his song too Oh my god It's one of the most It's one of the most compelling And incredible moments in cinema Watching him try

[01:11:35] I have truly yet to see A karaoke performance worse than Here's Brosnan and Malkovich So bad And he's having And he's having so much fun He's having so much fun He's having so much fun It's so different from like Russell Crowe and Les Mis

[01:11:47] Where it's like this seems miserable And Brad and look like here's Brosnan And it's like And Julius Brosnan's like I'm just going to go for it Yeah Bill Murray for City of Ember Wow Dennis Quaid for The Express Also not a movie for grownups

[01:12:00] No that's a movie based on a young adult Very much for children It's true for a children's ARP Movies with grownups nomination Weird He's just a grownup in a movie Yeah Movies with grownups The funniest thing is that Best supporting actress that year Was at Ty What

[01:12:14] Christine Baransky and Julie Walters For Mama Mia Cheers Cheers Cheers Cheers That's great There you go So that's who beat Deborah Winger Sure So Kim with a Y Oh and also the winner of Best Movie For Grownups Who Refused to Grow Up Iron Man Oh Different Era

[01:12:33] And thus we were cursed Kim with a Y who One could argue was kind of Cursed herself by being given That kind of Kim with a Y It's tough Kim with two Ys It's toxic I love that there's the throwaway line

[01:12:48] About her being on the cover of 17 magazine Right Because of the lilac sweater Yeah Which it doesn't seem like she was a model ever No was it that Because if the dad was a music exec Was it that she had like a brief Like pop career

[01:13:03] But what did she say She said she was like They paid me and I was like Hi Or something And it's like What does Rachel do Do we know She's a therapist She's starting to be a student She's starting to be She's starting to be

[01:13:16] She's getting her PhD As Bill Irwin points out during that I've decided that I think that it's like Pop That she did music Cause I thought it was like a Disney thing I think she was just the model I don't think it was like

[01:13:26] You think she was a model? Yeah I knew a weird amount of people Who just got I grew up in New York But I knew a weird amount of people Oh god everyone grows up in New York And like on 17

[01:13:36] You used to be able to just be a model It wasn't like celebrity You had to be something And they would just like Have people roaming the streets Looking for teenagers As creepy as that sounds You have a fresh look Yeah That's like the whole Chloe 7-y thing

[01:13:50] Right and most of them Developed drug problems Yes Like I mean they fit this I know so many people Like this character Who had that as part of like Oh and weirdly I was once profiled In like 17 magazine That wasn't what I did I never did that again

[01:14:04] And then you're just like An adult who says that Yeah Yeah Okay So then early on After sleeping with Method Zicco and then having a little Confrontation over Who gets to be the maid of honor I love the lady The totally random lady Who plays the friend

[01:14:19] She's just kind of a pain Like nearly on Kim's side Yes I loved Emma though by the end I know at the end I like the last shot of her It's great Right And also such a specific Wedding thing If you're part of the wedding

[01:14:32] And you stay at the house And you're just like And then you just see someone The next morning Being like Trashed After they've been the most Made-up They will ever be in their lives And it's like You're just sort of like Exactly

[01:14:44] Making no effort for the next week All the fights And everything though too It's like they are all stuck In this house So it's like they can't even Like there's like The most they can do Is like go on the porch And smoke a cigarette Or whatever

[01:14:55] But then there's The first big set piece Is the rehearsal dinner Is the toast Oh my God Yeah That's the first Kind of like What's actually going on Yeah Like how intense is this And it's so good The speeches sound so real They all sound so real

[01:15:10] And also the whole Like the old The old one who does Like the funny speech Yeah And the grandma And the boys Only V in the bedroom Rachel is pure And Kydney is Simple It's like the exact kind of Wedding joke Wedding speech joke That actually happens

[01:15:26] The exact type of laughter If you googled like Toasts to give it Or you'd probably get stuff Like that When the sister gets up And goes Yup, it's the princess Yeah, it's like It's like Everyone just like Laughs Like a niffle It's such an honest moment

[01:15:40] But it's also the thing That totally dooms Kim Kim is like Oh, I could just do that I can own what everyone thinks I am And the whole time None of her jokes works She's like Step by change Still waiting for the change And it's like

[01:15:53] But what I love Love One of the many things Love about this movie Is that that could be In a more dramatic Or more silly movie Some big fucking thing Yeah And then Instead it's like It happens And you move on And they go back

[01:16:07] There are three more speeches Exactly Everyone's just like Well, that was the That was the weird speech The thing she does so well And this is the reason why I think Hathaway is so Incredibly good And it's such a smart use Of her in this

[01:16:18] Is it someone who is trying To perform well for everybody Who is like trying to Exert an Anne Hathaway level Of control on her surroundings And how people perceive her Except she is totally failing So you get the like Anne Hathaway like perfect Poised kind of thing

[01:16:33] Except it's wrong Like her characterization is wrong And she's not reading the room And then when she falls apart It's devastating But she'll do this thing In the speech where she like Makes a quote unquote joke And then she takes a breath Because she thinks

[01:16:47] There's gonna be a laugh And this is a place for her to like It's so devastating It hurts By the middle Like the last half of the speech Also then she just starts laughing At her own jokes Yeah Which is like So brutal to watch

[01:16:59] Oh, it's so good But I just love that this This is sort of what I'm trying to say It's like this is a movie about An addict who crashes her sister's wedding And she one does not ruin the wedding And two does not relapse

[01:17:11] Which are the two most obvious Screenwriting things that we do Yeah, when I went at the Like not to jump ahead But when she's like driving At the end and you're like Oh, like any other movie would be like She's gonna go by drive She's gonna do things

[01:17:24] And it's like no She's literally just distraught She literally wants to die Yeah I also think like this is One of the best movies I have ever seen Period Yeah I think it's so good It's definitely one of the best movies Of its decade Wow

[01:17:44] I think it's probably in my 10 For the 2000s So it's your number one of OA Well, you know three Two of my all time bangers are in OA Is Zeneck to Key the other one And Wally Yeah, those are good Those are good Those are good

[01:18:00] Those are all famous for me This would be my number three But I maybe have three movies from 2008 In my top 10 of the 2000s Oh, it's a good year Oh, it's a good year It's a gorgeous year It's a beautiful year I saw Doubt and I was like

[01:18:13] Oh, I love movies You were in Yeah, there's Doubt right down there On the bottom of my list Oh, literally third to last Yeah, third to last That makes sense This list is wild Your bottom six is Twilight happening Hulk, Doubt, Reader Revolutionary Road Yeah

[01:18:28] And I like Twilight Twilight is a good movie Twilight is a good movie I mean, you know, it's imperfect But it's some fun to be had there What I was gonna say The top is good It's a good top Zeneck to Key happy go lucky

[01:18:39] Dark Knight Speed Race Or Rachel getting married Is your top five Ben is losing it Oh, Ben's used to this shit Are you kidding me? He's been stuck with us for five years Yeah, I'm at that point In the episode Great, that's great Yeah, but I'm with it

[01:18:52] Okay Ben, do you like Rachel getting married? Did you watch? No Well, it's very obvious you didn't watch Because if you'd watched, I think you'd have a lot You would Because this is about a scumbum I know Ben's very hungover He's been very busy Yes

[01:19:07] But I love weddings And I love hearing You would love this wedding, I think You would It's a real kooky wedding The only thing she does out of the wedding Stereotype songbook is get laid She doesn't ruin the wedding But he also gets laid in the beginning

[01:19:22] And it's like It's like a show And it's never a problem And the romance isn't like some big Over-arching thing There's not some love triangle that plays out No real problem with the wedding Exactly I mean, she wants to wear gray instead of lilac

[01:19:35] I guess that's her big disruption She ultimately does But she fucks up her hair Yeah, she fucks up her hair But she fix it with the side part Barely I know She goes for the gay That's a chunky highlight I watched all the deleted scenes

[01:19:46] Which unsurprisingly are like There's another five minutes of speeches There's like every person who's in Al-Anon Has their own individual testimony Where like there's one of the Al-Anon meetings There's a guy sitting behind her Who looks like Fat Elvis He's like a big guy with sideburns

[01:20:02] In a pompadour And in the movie you're like Oh, what an interesting face Like Demi just like collecting interesting people And then he's got deleted scene That's devastating Wow About him serving in Vietnam Oh my god And getting addicted to combat

[01:20:21] The pain because that's what they gave him Anyway, anyway, anyway The thing I was gonna say is There's a lot more Mather Zickle romance stuff That I think they wisely cut out Where there are more scenes of them connecting Or like kissing

[01:20:35] Where it feels like that's more of a thread And I love that You get them sleeping almost immediately together At the very end you have this nice note of like That sweet little kiss Or maybe they'll stay in touch

[01:20:46] And in the middle it's a lot of just her paranoia Every time he talks to another woman And then he like brings her the plate of food And reception Well, also like when they all dance together In the living room And he like kind of goes around here

[01:20:59] It's sweet You know what he reminds me of? He reminds me of Luke Kirby and Take This Wall He's got some Kirby He has that kind of like Luke Kirby energy That's one of my favorite performances Yes, by a man Ever Movie roles It's so good

[01:21:12] Luke Kirby is so good at that movie Luke Kirby sends me Dreamland He's...what? Alright fine He's so dreamy When they get... Oh, oh, oh Someone on the Kirby Nintendo Kirby Hi Oh Oh it's like the little guy who sends me to Dreamland Don't high five him

[01:21:29] When Luke Kirby tells Michelle Williams How he would fuck her in that movie No it's literally One of the great pieces of cinema Yes Sir Sillman's my... I think my best supporting actress Wondered that year Oh she's so good at that movie She's incredibly good

[01:21:42] Very good in that movie Very good in that movie Theraderos in 12 maybe That's all I'm trying to do But that's As a comedian I show up and take this wall Hit my little scene Everybody's like Wait a minute are you Kind of okay at acting

[01:21:54] Would you show Bush? Yes she's full-fledged in that movie Yes, yeah, Bush But it's like a nice mundane It's like they're like showering It's like Mine is going to be like nasty Like filthy amounts of bush We're going to be like Jesus Oh my God

[01:22:10] This isn't even erotic anymore This is just a shot of the bush Just trailing to the floor at this point What the absolute hell I'm at the Independence beard awards I'm drunk They want you to think it was a fucking merkin Guess what, bitch I grew it out

[01:22:27] The thing I love about this movie Is that I feel like it gets at How difficult it is To coexist With someone in this kind of state That weird like Someone who is this And neatly frustrating And maddening to be around Who you can't help but have

[01:22:50] Sort of basic sympathy for Who you want to show empathy for And be supportive of But that really tricky line of like How much are you indulging them How much are you helping them supporting them How much can you fucking tolerate Before you have to draw a line

[01:23:04] Especially if you spent years being like I have been here I have tried And the oscillations And so lived in that world though It's just like also such a specific type of person That like I'm not Like I'm not I don't really know many people like this

[01:23:18] But you know it's like They're clearly wealthy and educated And like they have like certain like Customs and like rituals with each other as a family But there's like so much just like Trauma and damage that's in The blood of their family

[01:23:34] Like that's in the marrow of it That you can't escape Even when things are at their best Which Bill Irwin plays so well That's sort of like He's always trying to be like Well no it's fine and you know Let's not worry about it

[01:23:46] Like he's always trying to revert to like Peacemaker mode At the slightest provocation Well that's what I mean That dishwashing scene is so Heartbreak because that's the thing It's like seeing that acting It's so fun Because up until that point It's so fun And everyone's like

[01:24:00] And the band is playing like a jaunty thing Yeah And it's just like Well even in the house They don't really have that many memories of Ethan Like they just have the plate And I think like one baby picture There's a baby picture of Anne Hathaway's little brother

[01:24:12] Oh it's her real little brother Which is kind of wild Yeah Oh she cried Oh she cried There's so much restraint In all of those like Quote unquote big scenes Where you go like in 99 out of 100 versions Of this movie Bill Irwin would like

[01:24:29] Throw the plate on the ground And start heaving And instead He would even just like say something He just doesn't say anything He just walks out It's so heartbreaking There's a tiny moment where he sees the plate They're all cheering him They announce that he's won

[01:24:44] He's looking at the plate And he realizes he has to keep up appearances He smiles And he smiles to be like Yeah I did it And then puts the plate down and walks away Oh and then Sydney like rubs Kim's shoulder That like sweet little moment

[01:24:57] Where she's like She's like I fucked this up so bad And he's like It's this dimly thing where like He wants to keep tabs On the thread of how every single person Is affected by every single interaction Where there's the scene where they go to the hair salon

[01:25:12] I know we're just jumping all around That's the next big conflict It's pre dishwasher scene This is the same actor Who plays the guy who propositions Denzel Washington in Philadelphia Oh my god wait This guy's an icon And here's the thing

[01:25:30] I was like who is this fucking guy Looked him up Realized he's a guy in Philadelphia Another incredible one scene performance His fucking background is he was A PA on two Demi movies Oh my god He was a PA on Silence of the Lambs

[01:25:44] And I think one other What a hero Maybe Philadelphia Demi gives him the scene in Philadelphia And Kiteeza cast him He's had an illustrious career A working actor for the last 20 Demi seems to be just like the best man His name I believe is Andre B Blake Yes

[01:26:01] And he's also he's in Yeah he's a good man Mentoring candidate The first time I saw Philadelphia I was like okay wait kind of hot And he worked on It's just Silence of the Lambs Is the only Demi he worked on He also worked on Boomerang Oh gosh

[01:26:13] But yes his first credit Of any kind is PA on Silence of the Lambs Yes Then he gets a fucking showcase scene As an actor in Philadelphia So good He's so good I'm like getting goosebumps thinking about it It's a great scene It's a goosebumps scene

[01:26:29] Like half the way it plays it's so well too Where she so wants him to stop talking about it The staging of it also Where you can see Rosemary Dewitt behind her Rosemary Dewitt another Rob Devinosca nomination She's incredible in this movie

[01:26:41] She is so good in this movie She won so many critics awards I was looking it up Yeah she was very much It's kind of crazy She got the titular character She's the titular role And it's Rachel and she's getting married Which Rachel not getting married

[01:26:56] In our DM I will say neither of you left at my joke Which kind of hurt my feelings I feel like I thought it was okay I was not in the DM so I feel really bad Which was Griffin sent us all the information And watched the movie

[01:27:09] And Io said What if I watch Margot at the wedding instead I mean that'd be funny And then you Posted after that Just for me I guess Because I was hurt I was hurt I was like You were just joking I was hurt Then nobody responded to that

[01:27:26] I looked at it last night Kind of late and I was like I could make a muriel's wedding joke At this moment I was trying to write my own joke And I didn't cope with one that I thought was good enough That's the issue? Yeah

[01:27:36] Dude I'm gonna dive in right now And send you a ha ha ha ha An LOL I'll give you an LOL Ha ha is feel cool I'll give you this Alright guys I'll give you a Ki-Hee Jesus Christ But what I was gonna say is This part

[01:27:47] Sorry but my feelings were hurt David what do you want from me I wasn't even on the DM So I'm the loser here Well you're a lucky one I even got to not laugh at the joke Ha Ha I didn't even see the friggin' bug

[01:27:56] Maybe I would have loved No we got to call it a bug Ha ha ha ha Oh my god What I was going to say What a silly bunch we are Yes And it's such a demi-touch But Anne Hathaway this like Fucking nails on a chalkboard scene

[01:28:11] That won't end But he's trying to like Connect so badly And you know And he thinks he's the big scene in the movie He's like This is the Oscar scene Where he's saying to her in the movie You don't understand how you changed my life Yeah

[01:28:25] Right and this is it It's the waiter coming up to Patricia Arquette Exactly In Boyz I'm being like You gave me this life He thinks he's giving her the Oscar nom That he's alley-ooping her To give the best scene in the movie And she's like please stop

[01:28:36] She's like Jesus Christ He's sabotaging it And when she When Rosemary DeWitt When Rachel gets up And runs out It's so real Because it's like She's not just shutting him down Like she's doing that thing Where you're in horrible awkward conversation And you're like

[01:28:50] Okay I'm gonna look at you And we're gonna make eye contact And we're going to end this And we're going to stop talking Right we're gonna finish this God And also that at first She can't even remember who he is She doesn't remember which

[01:28:59] She keeps thinking she remembers Which rehab are you talking about She's a liar Like also But Rachel gets up And runs out Kim follows her And then Demi stays on him For like a second Yes And it's this thing That most directors wouldn't do Which is

[01:29:14] Give you a moment of This guy trying to process What just happened Because in his mind He is of course just telling her The greatest thing Which is You don't know how much you've helped me I've been sober Since I last saw you My life is going great

[01:29:27] What did I just do Why is everyone sad Why is everyone leaving Before their hair is finished And the fact that he lingers On the dude for a second Is just like Everyone in this movie matters No one is like a character Everyone in the background

[01:29:41] Feels like they have their own life And their own experiences And their own dreams That they're going through Like it is this movie That just feels like He has created an ecosystem And there is like This very like Sort of like Rot drama at the center of it

[01:29:56] But it is not all consuming Nobody's a throw away No and like You compare it to Manchester By The Sea You know Which is a movie that similarly Has at its center This like unimaginable tragedy This thing where you're just like How do you fucking recover from that

[01:30:12] And this is just like In this movie That is just one of the things Nestled at the center And everything else going around it Is as valid And the scene where she confesses To Killing Ethan at Al-Anon Is like 30 to 40 minutes into the movie

[01:30:30] They don't save it to the end And there's so much restraint Of course she is going to get emotional Anytime she tells this story But Hathaway so wisely plays it like This is the eighth hundredth time She has told this story She can't stop telling it

[01:30:45] The tears come out But she's not like bawling She doesn't think she's like Right Because he also like I mean in Al-Anon they don't know Up until then Like they reference Ethan They're like Oh like There's that part before the speeches Where they're like

[01:31:01] And our little buddy Ethan Is like watching over us And you're like I wish Ethan was here Yeah I wish Ethan was here Even like I'm thinking about The Boshaw character Like the glasses guy When Kim first comes into the house And he's like

[01:31:15] Oh I thought I saw a ghost Like where he's just Like it's like Oh right like she's this presence In everyone's lives that we know And there's this story that everyone Knows the details of Emma knows the details Like Sydney knows the details

[01:31:26] Sydney's family probably knows the details So they're not like Hugely freaking out Even when she's acting weirdly Because they're like Right he's told us that this family is fucked up You would be warned in this family Like hey There's a sister Who's an addict

[01:31:38] Who is like manic depressive Who has like You know it causes a lot of drama Yeah But then To top that off Also here's the unspeakable tragedy That was caused by her Which none of us have gotten over And which she Has only further propelled Her self-destructive behavior

[01:31:55] Right But like almost The entire monologue is delivered In like one shot without cuts In profile Sure And you see Mather Zicker Zickle Mather Zickle Mather Zickle Mather Zickle Mather Zickle You see him over her shoulder And you watch him like Doing his like good sympathetic face

[01:32:16] You know like the I'm here for you Like we're all supporting each other We have each other's backs And then there's the turning point in the story Where it's like Oh this has gotten that bleak Right Where everyone in the room Suddenly starts like

[01:32:29] Questioning whether they want to judge her or not Right Where it's like Wait is this a point of a no return? This story is self-ucked up Right And then her story becomes about that Right Like I will never forgive myself I don't know how to forgive myself

[01:32:42] I don't know how to be a person There's no way I will ever feel like I deserve to be alive I cannot believe in God anymore Because I don't want to believe that God would do that It's so fucked up

[01:32:52] And then that God would also forgive me at any point Right, I don't want to believe in a God Who could forgive me Because I will never forgive myself What does she say at the end She's like you can find God Or you can come here Yep

[01:33:03] Or something like that It's like oh my God Like And just so like It is the most off the cuff way You could ever play a scene Of that weight Right Cause usually in movies where like There is like a dead child we don't talk about

[01:33:18] It's like the reveal of it is so like Gravity Like it's so yeah It comes in the middle of a fight And it's like what do you say it Yeah and this is just so like I wish Ethan was still alive inside of you

[01:33:28] And that they all start crying Everyone talks Right What if Robert Patrick showed up and said wrong kid died I mean it would work In this movie, it would fit It would fit Same here with this movie And that scene with Deborah Wenger Is so heartbreaking So good

[01:33:41] Oh my God When she shows up at the The opposite where she's locked it all Yeah Right And the way that she's choosing to process And live her life She's constantly leaving She's like you know I love that her husband like never speaks

[01:33:52] She's like does not say a word And also even when she's like Well you know how helpless he is So I have to go help him That's why I'm leaving And he's just like I mean one of the best things about this movie Is that that's not resolved

[01:34:03] Yeah she just leaves it sucks She doesn't want to resolve it And it's so sad Like when Rosemary Dewitt sees her And she's like oh we were just going to slip out And she's like You can make a little fuss What? Yeah It's like it's so sad

[01:34:14] And Rosemary Dewitt plays it so well Where she's like I want my mother And my sister And they have that like Horrible hug That also you don't see Rosemary Dewitt's face for Which I You just see and And Deborah Which I love

[01:34:26] They're like two inches away from each other Working as hard as they can To not make eye contact Because they got in a fist fight 12 hours in a week Oh and she really punches her It is none Incredible Because I mean There's that underlying emotion Where she's like

[01:34:39] Please don't stir up this memory Don't talk about it Beyond the blame I don't have the space to process it My thing is not processing it You're making me process it I'm going to punch you She can't handle it So she just literally goes Postal

[01:34:51] I mean she just goes crazy And also her daughter's like What were you thinking She doesn't have an answer Kim is making a good point She's like why would you You knew I was a drug addict Why would you leave your child I had sentences heart breaking

[01:35:02] Also when Deborah Winger says Well you were the best You were the best When you were with him And it's just like It's one of those arguments That's so well written Where it's like both sides You're kind of good And you're like No one has an answer here

[01:35:13] This is not a resolvable thing Right the root of Like all of the drama in this Movie is that she was such an Issue throughout every point In her life that she sucked Up all the oxygen in the room Where everything was prioritized Around her So that

[01:35:26] So she's going From Deborah Winger's vantage Point she's like It would probably be better To leave her with Ethan Because it might make her Step up to the play Or not Because it might make her Step up to the play A little bit more But like

[01:35:39] And is putting that Above Ethan's This is so heart breaking Sorry to just like Imagine like Just you're raising a child And it's like This is the only time I see the thing That I thought that I recognized In you But like inadvertently You know There's also things

[01:35:55] That you're probably avoiding With her own issues And like putting her In this situation Where it's Right and it's like The two people who Probably blame themselves The most But there is I just feel like There is a bad version of this movie Where that discussion

[01:36:09] Ends with her being like I know Like it was my fault too And I'm sorry Like where it comes to a head And she shouts something That's sort of like What you're saying Right Like where it's like Something dramatic and punchy And instead she's just like

[01:36:23] Just stop talking about it She cold cocks her daughter In the fit Like she cuts it off Two sentences into What would be that scene Exactly But you have these four people Where it's like You know the story Where you're like I'm gonna study

[01:36:36] And how you can process trauma Where Rosemary DeWitt is like I'm going to intellectualize this I'm gonna understand How the human being works I'm gonna approach it Academically I'm gonna make my business I'm gonna learn How to help other people Like I'm gonna Completely handle this

[01:36:49] Also moved to Hawaii Yes And also married A total cool hottie Yes And like Hanging out with his Cool family Right, have like Bare his child Which is gonna be A beautiful child With a beautiful long face Incredible nose Just the most insane nose And you'll probably be

[01:37:05] Statues carved of that nose Every time she was in profile In this movie I just kept on thinking Like how many people Must have told her to get a nose job And how much respect do I have For her for not doing it I texted Esther Zuckerman

[01:37:16] To a friend of the show about I was like I need to tell someone Because I can't tweet this Because I'm No Can't be horny on main? I mean I work for the Atlantic dot com I can no longer be horny on main

[01:37:26] And so I had to text Esther I love Rosemary's nose And we talked about that for five minutes Of course we talked about it For Grace's nose The platonic ideal The tragedy of that nose Long noses And then the tragedy Of its undoing But that's like

[01:37:41] You have to imagine that Like every shitty agent That Rosemary Dwayne met with Was like hey Have you ever thought about Maybe And the confidence to be Like Fuck you I'm keeping it This is gonna be my thing Incredible nose Do people still do that In meetings

[01:37:56] I think so I kinda like Somebody should tell me What I should get though You're like just laying on me Just like How can I fix You should get a nose extension You should get a Rosemary Dwayne I would love to go Into a plastic surgeon

[01:38:08] Obviously they'd be like Can you give me the duet Can you add a bridge You're right Alright so So there's the way Rosemary Dwayne Is handling it Bill Irwin is like Completely deflecting And I'm gonna delve head first And continue to try to Solve Anne Hathaway

[01:38:22] Like I'm gonna preoccupy Myself with a different crisis There's a way to Yes dig your way out of that Fix your way Exactly Right And never winger is just like Bottle done on a shelf I live in a nice house now I don't hang out

[01:38:34] Don't look it in the eye If you try to bring it up with me I will punch you in your face Right Right And then Hathaway is just like To a certain degree Doing what she's been doing Her entire life But also It feels like baiting people

[01:38:48] To judge her more And blame her more She can't stand The sort of politeness She can't live with herself And the line that Rosemary Dwayne says Where she's like Her entire childhood Waiting for her to either get better Or die I was praying for one of the two

[01:39:02] To happen That she would get better Or die Which is such a brutal thing But that is what you feel like When you think if you love somebody Who's like Isn't that much pain? You're like You can't stay here Right This is like Terrible for all of us

[01:39:16] Yeah I mean there's also There's the scene after the Barbara After the This lot Right You see Rachel being like Now that I know this shit You're lying You're telling these fake stories And therapy You're not taking responsibility For what you know Like that's her view of that

[01:39:31] It's the one time Bill Irwin kind of questions her Doesn't coddle her And is like Why would you lie about that? Exactly Because also I feel He feels implicated Even though she's saying She has like a molesting Oncler or whatever I feel like he's like

[01:39:43] You can't portray us That way Yeah There's a really nice scene After Rachel like Drives the car into the Rock or whatever Yeah And like Rosemary Dwayne just like It has to give her a bath Okay so that's my favorite scene in the movie

[01:39:57] So everything's building to it And I remember when I'm seeing this in a theater The Ethan tattoo that Emma Really early on in the movie Is like you gotta cover up your tattoo And then you see that it's Ethan It's incredible

[01:40:06] And it's also kind of a bad tattoo It's a whole ugly tattoo Clearly a tattoo she was like Well maybe this will be a good idea Exactly She's drunk when she got it Right But so okay So I remember I'm watching this movie In the theater or whatever

[01:40:18] Yeah And I'm like You know Is this she gonna fucking You know Buy some drugs And fuck things up that way What's she gonna do Then of course she crashes her car And it's really she's trying to kill herself Yeah Right like that's the idea

[01:40:31] I feel like she's Or I think just She's just giving up you know I also read it as It's like a form of self harm If not suicide Exactly Where it's like she has She doesn't want to Relapse Right Exactly Because she has now been so thoroughly

[01:40:47] Called out on How much she's trying to make The wedding about herself Right That scene also I'm sorry to go back for a second But the scene where they get into the massive fight And then Rachel drops that she's pregnant Oh and Kim is like It's not fair

[01:40:59] That scene is incredible The cause I am on Kim's side in a way Yeah It is unfair She is deploying At the same time Kim can't do what she's doing Which is call it out Right You just have to abandon the ship And be like Oh my god

[01:41:15] No the Stanley is damaged Yes But she won't do it She won't do it She's like No And Bill Irwin is at the peak of his dad thing Where he's like Ah ah An annah to viewersmith is like I have to go to bed That's the real

[01:41:30] She has great stepmom energy Where she's just like Oh it's all there doing their thing She's like I love this I just like Bill Irwin Like I saw Waves Which It'll have been long out So you can talk about it I hated it Yeah it's a terrible movie

[01:41:49] It's a terrible movie With a perfect performance by Taylor Russell She's like It's generally a well acted movie Yes It's an awful movie And honestly a well made movie But yet it's bad Yes Anyway Which also it does You know it feels like one long music video

[01:42:05] In the opposite of this movie But unlike this movie Right Where every fucking dramatic thing possible happens Basically And with a punctuated by a song By Instagram and songs Yeah But um Oh my gosh now I'm blinking on her name Um Lead actress in Hamilton

[01:42:21] Uh Rene Elise Goldberry Yes Rene Elise Goldberry plays a stepmom Yes And uh You know it's like It's that thing it's like you're taking on All of the emotional weight Of this family That's what happens when you marry into Your family You're inheriting a backstory

[01:42:35] For us my sisters And so like And when Anna DeVere Smith Is like hearing about the story of Ethan again She's weeping And when all the happy things are happening She's like So elated And she's like right by everyone's side And she's smiling

[01:42:47] But like when all this drama is happening She's also like I'm fucking out Like I can't I have to go I can't baby I mean that's And that's the card she gets to play She is great as well Yes I mean everyone's good Hair laid

[01:43:00] Oh she looks fabulous So fresh Um but yes Back to the car After she crashes her car She knows at this point She's been so thoroughly called out Of making everything about herself Anything she fucking does She's gonna ruin the wedding And it's gonna be called out

[01:43:12] And she just wanna relapse So she wants to feel some amount of pain And there's also the great Like visual metaphor of like It's literally a fork in the road And she just drives right through it She's like I'm not picking And it's also not like an easy

[01:43:23] Immediate crash either She's really like She's just going over a tree And she's having to go And she doesn't even crash into a tree She crashes into this sort of A giant rock Like a weird rock And it's like It's so It's insane But then there are like

[01:43:38] Four nearly wordless minutes Incredible Like the joggers finding her Waking up By the cops Walking the line Taking the test And then she comes to the And then she goes back to the house And that guy's like Are you holding? And she's like

[01:43:52] She's like not dealing with you right now Obviously But you're mostly either seeing her Like in the dark At a distance from behind So that when they finally get That like head on You see her face When Rachel sees her face And rather than Rachel go like

[01:44:04] I can't believe you're doing this This is so awful This is my wedding day The hair that still hasn't been Touched from when she left The salon 12 hours earlier She just It's just wordless It all goes away And Rachel's face is gonna help her

[01:44:14] It's like a beautiful like Sibling moment It is The bad scene is incredible Yeah I'm being like I am so pissed at you But I'm going to put this aside Because you need help right now And I am going to like Do it like that

[01:44:25] And then what I love Is that the wedding is great We love, we enjoy the wedding Kim is having a bad time She's basically keeping to herself But she's not really doing much But they also Kinda background her For the next 20 minutes Exactly She doesn't really

[01:44:37] She knows not to fuck things up She takes the L Exactly Like she's just like I need to do it And I know I can't really talk to my mom I can't do it I'm just gonna chill out I'm gonna play soccer with these kids

[01:44:48] Over here or something Right But she barely speaks for like 15 minutes They're not even giving her many Reaction shots or anything No She does get that nice moment Where she's like crying While they're singing The nearly young song And it's like And it's so emotional That she's feeling

[01:45:02] Someone else's emotions And not making it about herself What a good movie What a fucking great movie Wait, here's a question That I think I was like watching this movie Last night And I was like In the wedding party When they're all like dancing Is Sebastian Stan

[01:45:17] In the background He is Okay So did they just like They needed another guy? I think so I really was like Is that him and I really wanted it What if there's a subplot That's like Rosencrantz and Gilhenson This is about him escaping Yes And then like

[01:45:31] He pops into the Like how he got there He has two credits in the movie I will say Oh, really? He has two different characters It's like Walter Slash Bowtie Party Eagle Eye viewers will notice He's wearing like a tangerine shirt

[01:45:43] He also of course has a metal arm Of course, yes Yes we know Is there any movie that looks Like it was more fun to work on? It looks so It just looks so It looks like they were all hanging out Yeah Like usually when

[01:45:59] A cast is going on a press tour And they're like We were just hanging out I don't believe you would fall But this one really feels Like it feels so lived in And it feels like Everyone has such a real Like hangout energy

[01:46:09] Actually why I kind of like disagree Well I wonder how they shot things Like if it was chronological Or like I feel like It was chronological It feels like that to me as well But only because like Then the hard days, you know It's like

[01:46:25] You're not talking to anybody Like the set is nice It does feel like By the time they got to the party They were all like We're just We're just partying We're gonna like Just like give you guys some Like they have the music going

[01:46:36] There was a scene where Anne Hathaway felt bothered By the music Because it was too loud And she was like Can they cut it out And that was Demi saying to her Like if you don't like it Say it in the scene If it's bothering you

[01:46:46] You have to say it in the scene Not now When she yells it She's yelling it to Demi And Bill has to be like Demi says if you feel that way You have to make it part of the scene And then they cut to

[01:46:55] Everyone else reacting to it It's stuff like that Where he's like I just want this to feel Like it's happening He should have won The Academy Award for directing In my opinion Well this is the year That is one of the best Movie This is also the year

[01:47:10] That breaks the Oscars It is It's the year they snub The dark night And afterwards They have the ten It's true We'll talk about that in a second This is the Slumdog Millionaire Year But it is festive This is like Slumdog, Frost Nixon, Milk This is the year

[01:47:24] I started paying attention To Oscars It's when they Literally only nominated One good film For Best Picture And it was Milk I think Yeah Because Slumdog is So-so Invention Invention Invention Yeah Where you're like It's button the second You can talk yourself into that

[01:47:42] I remember fighting with my dad About it in the car Because we saw Dark Knight together And I was like I don't understand how this film Wasn't nominated This just doesn't make any sense You know I'm like fully a child And he was like

[01:47:55] I can't have this conversation I was like Your age is up That's broken with the Academy It was like Dark Knight getting snubbed Wally getting snubbed And Rantorino had done so well Sure Even Jubius Came on late Is this Juno's year? That was the year after

[01:48:14] The year before is very good The year before The 7 was pretty good Oh wow Yeah But it always breaks the Oscars And they never recover And they go crazy trying To chase the popular vote In a way It is weird that this is Milk had great Oscars

[01:48:27] It only gets the half-way nomination It doesn't get screenplay Screenplay was a very strange miss That it didn't get it It was a stacked year Frozen Rivers stole its spot Yes The other four nominees are Milk Which is credited to Dustin Lance Black Ridiculously Who wins an Oscar

[01:48:43] Who wins an Oscar even though He didn't write that He gets to own and keep Allegedly Sorry Happy Go Lucky Which weirdly Is that movie's only nomination Even though Sally Hawkins Is in any Mars And her service Is it one movie? Happy Go Lucky

[01:48:57] Is that the Mike Lee movie? No It's an incredible movie About an English Like elementary school teacher With, yes Sally Hawkins Yes Oh my God She's so good And it only gets a screenplay nomination Very strange Weird Because the writer's branch is She's in college In Bruges

[01:49:13] Which was sort of like It also came on late You know Wally Got a screenplay nomination Sort of the beginning of the end And then Frozen River Was the sort of surprise Over Rachel getting married Sure And Jenny Lumet I feel like this is like

[01:49:28] Announces her as a major screenwriter Now she's been trapped In genre movie hell What does she do now? She serves on writer's rooms For dark universes That's crazy Her next credited film After this is The Mummy Oh that sucks Because she was part of the writer's room

[01:49:43] For dark universe She's barely sound She should write plays And she sold like Two pilots that she was going to show And she had to split her screenplay credit With The Mummy That is true And the mummy from The Mummy And the mummy's hands are bound up

[01:49:55] You can't even tie it So it's like what Exactly And in the screenplay credit Jenny Lumet's name gets wrapped In bandages I feel like that movie was so try hard Also because The Mummy's split in half During because it was so old The mummy actually gets credited twice

[01:50:10] And it's Ann the mummy and the mummy So it's really toxic She sold two pilots She sold I think Two pilots that she was supposed to show Neither of them came to fruition She works on Star Trek now She worked on Star Trek Discovery

[01:50:22] She sold a bunch of screenplays I'm sure she's done a thousand Uncredited rewrites Just imagine like This hasn't happened I've been in rooms with people who I really Respect on a comedy level And worked in really cool rooms But I've never been in a room with somebody

[01:50:35] And been like, damn bitch You're the bitch that did Rachel getting married Like what the fuck Like you're just here? She had a script I think called Honeymoon with Harry I want to say that maybe Demi Was supposed to direct after this A bunch of people were attached

[01:50:47] At different points in time But it was supposed to be De Niro and Bradley Cooper Before Bradley Cooper really pop When De Niro was like This is my kid And it's about The first like 45 minutes Are a young couple They married and the disapproving father And then

[01:51:05] The wife I think unexpectedly Suddenly tragically dies Right after their wedding And he goes on the honeymoon To Hawaii with the father-in-law Weird Which was supposed to be this great script That just never ever got made I just want to shout out

[01:51:20] We should play the box office game But the last moment in the movie After the wedding which is so nice Is Kim is trying to slip out She's trying to pull a Deborah Winger Right where she's just like I'm just going to get the fuck out of here

[01:51:32] Drama free And Rachel runs out to like hug her And so it's like The cycle is at least hopefully not being repeated She's watching her slow dance With Sydney That's before It's the day after The last scene in the movie She like kisses the man

[01:51:49] But she's trying to slip out She's trying to pull a winger Right yes And Rachel stops her from doing that By giving her a hug I do love that the movie is called Rachel Getting Married Uh, Lumet Script It was originally called Dancing with Sheba

[01:52:04] That's a great title And it's also so nice because it's like Right this is supposed to be about Rachel's wedding Like the title is reasserting the conflict Of the movie which is like This is supposed to be everything Not this Kim business

[01:52:21] I love it, I think it's a perfect movie I think it's a masterpiece I agree, I love it so much It is my arena I guess it sounds a little bit It's a world of Demi's best move I also think it's this incredible thing

[01:52:34] That you kind of can't control How movies age and so often It's just tied into How sort of like Intune filmmakers were With something honest But when this movie came out There was so much of the criticism Being like this wedding is so unrealistic

[01:52:52] Who would make this melting pot wedding Of all these different cultures It's this idealistic like Demi we are the world dream And now you watch it and you're like Is this appropriation? But it's also the kind of cringy appropriation That you would completely buy These people doing

[01:53:10] Where it works in both lights You know? Anyway, I love this movie I love it October 3rd, 2008 The number one film of the year Is Richard getting married Is Ben's Laughin Is a children's film Beverly Hills Trawler That's correct About Little Dog

[01:53:34] I don't know how he did that This was a very lonely period of my life I remember this vividly How many times did you see Beverly Hills Trawler? I did not see it but I remember I remember the theaters debating whether or not to see it

[01:53:46] Can you tell me which studio put out Beverly Hills Trawler Walt Disney Pictures? Is Beverly Hills Trawler on Disney Plus? I think all three of the Beverly Hills Trawler films are I believe they are all on there Is George Lopez and the Beverly Hills Trawler He plays

[01:54:00] Yes, I'm trying to remember the character's name The name was The main Trawler is Drew Barrymore And he's like The funny comic relief Who I think also becomes the love interest The part of that movie is like she's like a pampered Trawler And he's like

[01:54:16] George Lopez is sort of like a street Trawler Called Poppy And then Andy Garcia plays a German Shepherd Called Delgado I didn't know Andy Garcia was in The Beverly Hills Trawler And Edward James almost plays a Doberman called El Diablo Stop

[01:54:32] The premise of Beverly Hills Trawler is essentially What if Paris Hilton's Trawler Had an adventure But with this Latino With the Mexican Trawler community And also I want to point out the Placido Domingo plays A long-haired Trawler called Montezuma Of course he does That movie made $100 million

[01:54:52] That movie opened to $29 million And it topped Out at $94 I was ready to throw that parade But here at number two is a movie that is one of those Sneaky 100 million grossers Doesn't exist, of course No 101 That's correct Are you okay? I was living in an apartment

[01:55:18] In Hell's Kitchen Billy Bob Thornton said, you're in a whole lot of trouble Son In apartment Hell's Kitchen I had moved in with three other guys And by this point in the year all of them had moved out So you were living alone? I mean that's the question

[01:55:34] But I was a block away from the AMC 25 Or a couple blocks away and I was going to see movies All the time This is how I'm going to remember this period of my life And I also, this is a period where I remember

[01:55:46] Like Box Office Mojo was really Poppin' and I was just refreshing Alone in this apartment by myself Being like, I wonder what that did Number three is A in my memory kind of charming Teen movie High school musical three senior year? Incorrect Oh that comes out Halloween weekend

[01:56:04] Of course Right where it belonged A New York set film I saw it on a date Margaret It's not Nicanora It is Nicanora's infinite playlist It's got a female orgasm Subplot It's got Ari Grainer The other day That is one of the most banana scenes

[01:56:28] A different podcast with Ben Can't tell you, it's secret Me and Harry have a podcast It's my friend Harry Harry Nelson And we're We're time capsulings Are you guys going to fight in front of us? Yes, I'm mad about this That's cool. Yeah, come out eventually

[01:56:48] David, I think you need to grow up about this Honestly No, I'm going to need a briefing after we're done Alright, number four I was saying that the scene in which Michael Sarah fingers In an electric lady studio Yes, yes, lady land And then you see the

[01:57:06] The fucking computer screen The view The levels That's one of those banana scenes I've never seen It is a wild scene A studio picture Are you scared of the female orgasm? Terrified I'm confused that you called it a comedy And not a psychological thriller

[01:57:26] Because that movie chilled me To the bone Alright, number four I think it's crazy that a scene that sexual Is in a studio movie Why do you hate women? Number four is It's like a grown up romance Is it Diane Lane Is it in Knights in Rodanth

[01:57:48] Just Rodanth? I'm not sure I've never seen it My pitch was always the sequel I've told you this before Knights of Rodanth K-N-I-G-H-T-S Which is Diane Lane is captured And all the men who have romanced her in the early 2000s have to go rescue her Gear

[01:58:08] And say more Q-SAC I believe James Franco is in Knights of Rodanth Franco, yeah Because from Maloney Alright And number five at the box office Is expanding this week It's from one of our great actor directors Oscar play Are you being sarcastic when you say one of our

[01:58:30] I think he actually is But yes, I'm being sarcastic But he's directed Several movies At least a couple And this is a western This is a western It's got a weird name Is it That's correct And who's the director Lonely time for all Appaloosa

[01:58:57] Give me the domestic top final On that one It's expanding this weekend Give me the domestic final The expansion is important to me Picturing the final I'm conjuring it I think the domestic Final on Appaloosa was eight It was twenty million dollars Did fine, I guess

[01:59:19] Appaloosa this movie I remember seeing the trailers for Appaloosa I'm being like, what is this When did 310 to Yuma come out Because I feel like that's had a similar 2007 Great movie Right? I think probably, yeah I don't even know what the competition is Copland maybe

[01:59:41] Wolverine is pretty fucking good Better than Logan Where do the two of you stand on Wolverine versus Logan Logan wins Wolverine is great but it's kind of like There's like a There's a campiness to Logan That's what I like

[01:59:57] Did you guys know that Logan is secretly a western? Ben don't play with him I've heard that, believe it or not Someone told me that I was not supposed to say anything They have a rival podcast, we don't want them taking our secrets Sorry Ben, look at me

[02:00:13] Say it again No Ben, do not Logan is secretly a western That's so crazy Yes Some of the other Movies in the top 10, Lakeview Terrace Sam Jackson That's right Is that the movie where the young couple Moves in next door and he harasses them It's Sam O Jackson

[02:00:39] It's like The trailer has one of the great twists of all time because he's the next door neighbor Who keeps harassing them and they go and meet with a lawyer And he's like obviously we need to talk about The issue of color in this matter

[02:00:51] And the color here Is blue And then they cut to the sound of a siren And reveal in the trailer that Sam Jackson is a cop Burn after reading Good movie You've got fireproof Is that like a faith movie? That's one of those The war room

[02:01:11] And then also an American Carol Michael Moore's zucker movie And then finally Flash of genius the windshield wiper movie Greg Keneer And the Lorelai Gilmore He invented the windshield wiper And then got screwed over I remember seeing that trailer so much They played it all

[02:01:31] It was really crazy And it also gives the whole movie where they're like Oh, it's so hard to drive in the rain And you just It feels like coupon the movie And it's like What if there's an Oscar Bay drama

[02:01:45] About the legal battles of a man who invented the windshield wiper Damn Where did Greg Keneer go? He's in my basement Are you feeding him? Not a lot I've said it on this podcast What's the unbreakable case? Oh, oh, it's They put him on

[02:02:05] They pretend that he was in a movie with Titus And Titus reveals They only found him by googling like White person nice She's like white person nice Yeah, anyway Phenomenal Any final words from any of us? I'll say this, I feel like

[02:02:25] I remember being so jazzed after this movie came out It being so great, but being like Demi has finally found a way to merge the two things In his career Like he's been this great fiction director And this great documentary director His fiction films have always been very

[02:02:39] Formally rigid Even if they felt messy emotionally Psychologically, he had a very clear Like sort of visual style that was very controlled And then his documentary Is one more freewheeling And it felt like he had found a way to merge the two

[02:02:53] And I was like this is this great Like second act of his career we're going to get now He's going to be out of like the studio Dole drums He's going to feel re-energized And then he makes two more movies and passes away

[02:03:05] And he made a few more documentaries I guess Yeah, he made many more documentaries But I was hoping to see more films in this vein But he died He died nine years later It feels like this was kind of Like a perfect summation of his entire life

[02:03:19] His career, all of his interests You have like all these different people In the film at the wedding Like Roger Corman and sister Carol Who have been like part of his Entire career, his previous films It just felt like It just felt like this celebration of like his

[02:03:35] Entire I agree It's a masterpiece and it is also a real Career culmination Yeah, it's great It's a great moment It's great she'll getting married What I will say That I forgot to bring up until this moment Is that originally I asked to do something wild

[02:03:57] And we got bumped by a more famous person Scotty Ox I'm gonna talk about these things But this I would say Is a better movie than something wild and I love something wild Something wild, a real rom But let's say this We bumped Mark Maron from this episode

[02:04:13] So the two of you could come on I don't believe that Mark Maron famously one of our enemies It's true we have a rivalry with him Yeah well you won So what movie is he doing Yeah he's gonna do the Justin Timberlake documentary JT and the Tessie kids

[02:04:31] Who are your kids He loves Rachel getting married He does He talks about it all the time in weirdly sexual tones Oh no I'll say that is my one thing with this movie Where I always feel really bad about How much I am Into Kim in this movie

[02:04:49] In like a very self-destructive way Oh I'm worried about you She shouldn't have said that on the buzz Her haircut is bad I'm so into the haircut Cut it out the haircut is cute I'll keep it in triple Is it cute? I like the haircut

[02:05:07] It was also like Ann was like a long Haird you know Oh look she's got a new thing You like the fashion That was a lovely time in your life I don't know if I like the fashion There's not much fashion Yeah it's mostly

[02:05:23] It's mostly just people wearing clothes You're scary right now I like that she looks comfy in this movie You're scary Yeah I know I'm revealing way too much of myself Thank you so much for being on the show Iconography one of my favorite podcasts

[02:05:37] I feel like my big podcast Discovery of 2019 And it's so exciting When you get to find a new show that you love And I feel like if people listen to this show They would love iconography because it's Similarly sort of the two of you

[02:05:51] Are obsessive in a way Love? I don't relate to that I'm never obsessive about anything The moment when I was like There's like a common code here Whenever the two of you Will reference specific interviews When you're like Do you remember when this person said this

[02:06:09] And this interview when they were promoting that And I'm like that's our style That's the kind of thing I look for So if you're a listener of this show And you like real nervous shit Iconography it's a forever dog And I was like a cool bitch

[02:06:23] Okay cool fine I actually don't even watch stuff I don't even watch TV I don't even watch stuff or host podcasts Yeah not really I've been reading, shopping Not even books though Just like signs Stop You know like That's kind of what I do now

[02:06:45] So I'm kind of cool I have a ska band Great For all the ska, the hot ska music Yeah if you're a ska And now that's ska If you had a big old trombone You've been holding since 2008 And a weird little sailor hat That you just been hoping

[02:07:03] Have we been recording for longer than Rachel getting married? Yeah We're done Thank you all for listening Please remember to rate, review, subscribe This has to be edited right? Absolutely not Thanks Ann for giving it for our social media Thanks Ann for our theme song

[02:07:39] A master builder A Henrik Ibsen adaptation starring Wallace Sean that premiered exclusively at The Film Forum A movie that has left a negative cultural footprint And as always I regret saying that I'm attracted to Ann Hathaway Because I made it so far

[02:07:55] I was holding out for so long The only honest thing you've said It was, it was the only thing I said in this episode That wasn't a lie
