[00:00:09] [SPEAKER_01]: Don't know what to say or to expect
[00:00:13] [SPEAKER_01]: All you need to know is that the name of the show is Blank Check
[00:00:21] [SPEAKER_02]: Hold on one second, I'm just digging this up.
[00:00:27] [SPEAKER_02]: Sorry, hold on one second guys.
[00:00:29] [SPEAKER_02]: I got my shovel, I'm just trying to pack this dirt on pack this dirt.
[00:00:35] [SPEAKER_02]: What is this?
[00:00:36] [SPEAKER_02]: This is the... hold on one second.
[00:00:39] [SPEAKER_02]: Let me blow the dust off this.
[00:00:43] [SPEAKER_04]: The Buried Secret of Podcasting!
[00:00:46] [SPEAKER_04]: Interesting, I was going to go with the Buried Podcast but okay.
[00:00:49] [SPEAKER_04]: The Buried Podcast of Griffin and David of M. Night Shyamalan.
[00:00:53] [SPEAKER_02]: Of Griffin and David, there we go.
[00:00:55] [SPEAKER_02]: The Buried Podcast of Griffin and David.
[00:00:57] [SPEAKER_02]: Hey folks here's a twist for you.
[00:00:58] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm Griffin.
[00:00:59] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm David.
[00:01:00] [SPEAKER_02]: This is Blank Check.
[00:01:01] [SPEAKER_02]: Yes.
[00:01:01] [SPEAKER_02]: It's a podcast about directors.
[00:01:04] [SPEAKER_02]: Yes, and this is the final bonus episode of our most recent series.
[00:01:12] [SPEAKER_02]: We got to say goodbye to a dear old friend.
[00:01:14] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:01:15] [SPEAKER_02]: His name is Minaj Shyamalan.
[00:01:18] [SPEAKER_02]: He wears a necklace.
[00:01:20] [SPEAKER_02]: It's got a Sanskrit poem, a prayer.
[00:01:23] [SPEAKER_02]: It protects him from evil things.
[00:01:25] [SPEAKER_02]: He's never opened it but he goes by a different name.
[00:01:27] [SPEAKER_02]: He does, yeah.
[00:01:29] [SPEAKER_02]: He's sort of the producer band of film directors.
[00:01:30] [SPEAKER_02]: You guessed who he is by the fact that his name is Minaj Shyamalan.
[00:01:34] [SPEAKER_02]: Of course we are talking about James Cameron.
[00:01:39] [SPEAKER_02]: M. Night Shyamalan is the name...
[00:01:41] [SPEAKER_02]: We are talking about Jane Campion.
[00:01:43] [SPEAKER_02]: No, yeah Minaj Shyamalan, yes.
[00:01:46] [SPEAKER_02]: Pot Night Shyamacast is the game that we're playing.
[00:01:48] [SPEAKER_02]: Yep, but it's the end of the game.
[00:01:49] [SPEAKER_04]: It's the final round.
[00:01:51] [SPEAKER_04]: Bottom of the ninth.
[00:01:52] [SPEAKER_04]: Our last episode, the visit episode, we didn't get enough time to like, you know,
[00:01:56] [SPEAKER_04]: kind of look back, you know?
[00:01:59] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah and we recorded that like three weeks ago.
[00:02:01] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah we did.
[00:02:02] [SPEAKER_02]: It was back to back episodes.
[00:02:03] [SPEAKER_02]: When we finished that we were like, I'm burnt.
[00:02:07] [SPEAKER_02]: You know, because we had watched a lot of top movies in a row.
[00:02:07] [SPEAKER_02]: We were really sick of M. Night.
[00:02:09] [SPEAKER_02]: We were really sick of M. Night.
[00:02:10] [SPEAKER_02]: But luckily we were ahead of schedule,
[00:02:12] [SPEAKER_02]: which was really lucky because then we hadn't had any...
[00:02:14] [SPEAKER_02]: And then you sucked from weeks.
[00:02:17] [SPEAKER_02]: I sucked.
[00:02:18] [SPEAKER_02]: I've been an asshole for the career for the last couple of years.
[00:02:21] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, you've had a career.
[00:02:22] [SPEAKER_02]: It's been garbage.
[00:02:23] [SPEAKER_02]: I fucking hate it.
[00:02:25] [SPEAKER_02]: It's awful.
[00:02:25] [SPEAKER_02]: No worries.
[00:02:26] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm gonna retire.
[00:02:27] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh you should.
[00:02:28] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:02:29] [SPEAKER_02]: But yeah, we're back in the studio now.
[00:02:31] [SPEAKER_02]: We had some time to breathe, let it air out.
[00:02:34] [SPEAKER_02]: And we just, we need final thoughts on this guy.
[00:02:36] [SPEAKER_02]: We did.
[00:02:37] [SPEAKER_02]: And so we're hanging those final thoughts around a very loose framework.
[00:02:41] [SPEAKER_04]: Around one of the most dog shit pieces of entertainment I've ever had to experience.
[00:02:47] [SPEAKER_04]: I think even calling it entertainment is generous.
[00:02:49] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, one of the worst assemblies of like shots and sound and pictures.
[00:02:54] [SPEAKER_04]: I don't know how you, you can call it a film exactly.
[00:02:57] [SPEAKER_02]: I try not to use this term non-ironically because it makes my skin crawl.
[00:03:02] [SPEAKER_02]: We're not just a bad movies podcast.
[00:03:04] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:03:04] [SPEAKER_04]: No.
[00:03:04] [SPEAKER_04]: No.
[00:03:05] [SPEAKER_04]: We do good movies.
[00:03:06] [SPEAKER_04]: Yep.
[00:03:06] [SPEAKER_04]: We're gonna do some good movies.
[00:03:08] [SPEAKER_04]: We're doing two back-to-back bad movies this weekend.
[00:03:10] [SPEAKER_04]: But I mean we're recording by the way.
[00:03:12] [SPEAKER_02]: Yes.
[00:03:13] [SPEAKER_02]: But our next mini series...
[00:03:16] [SPEAKER_02]: It's gonna be a lot of movies we like.
[00:03:17] [SPEAKER_02]: Okay?
[00:03:18] [SPEAKER_02]: We defend the ones that people don't like.
[00:03:20] [SPEAKER_02]: Exactly.
[00:03:21] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:03:21] [SPEAKER_02]: We might each pick one film we don't like, but that's probably at most.
[00:03:26] [SPEAKER_02]: Do you like all of them?
[00:03:27] [SPEAKER_02]: I like them all.
[00:03:28] [SPEAKER_02]: I maybe dislike one, but...
[00:03:29] [SPEAKER_02]: Which one?
[00:03:30] [SPEAKER_02]: I don't know.
[00:03:30] [SPEAKER_02]: We gotta re-watch.
[00:03:31] [SPEAKER_02]: We gotta see.
[00:03:32] [SPEAKER_02]: A lot of them I haven't seen in a while.
[00:03:34] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm saying there might be one I dislike.
[00:03:36] [SPEAKER_04]: I don't know yet!
[00:03:38] [SPEAKER_04]: It's the Matrix, isn't it?
[00:03:40] [SPEAKER_04]: That would be funny if that was the one you picked.
[00:03:42] [SPEAKER_04]: Matrix is so stupid.
[00:03:44] [SPEAKER_04]: Fuck the Matrix!
[00:03:46] [SPEAKER_04]: Anyway, we're talking about M.H. Shaman and we are talking about...
[00:03:51] [SPEAKER_02]: We're going to use this term non-ironically.
[00:03:52] [SPEAKER_02]: What's the term?
[00:03:53] [SPEAKER_02]: This is just a piece of content.
[00:03:55] [SPEAKER_02]: Do you know what I'm saying?
[00:03:56] [SPEAKER_02]: To call it entertainment implies that it can entertain.
[00:04:00] [SPEAKER_02]: This is content.
[00:04:00] [SPEAKER_02]: It exists.
[00:04:01] [SPEAKER_04]: It exists at eight up three hours of airtime in 2004 on the sci-fi channel.
[00:04:07] [SPEAKER_04]: It's currently eating up bandwidth on YouTube.
[00:04:10] [SPEAKER_04]: Like probably just a very small amount of bandwidth.
[00:04:13] [SPEAKER_02]: Spread over 13 parts on YouTube if you want to experience it.
[00:04:16] [SPEAKER_02]: I bought the DVD and I can tell you...
[00:04:20] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, it's full of data.
[00:04:21] [SPEAKER_04]: You maniac! You bought the DVD?
[00:04:23] [SPEAKER_04]: Did you watch it on DVD?
[00:04:25] [SPEAKER_04]: Oh, interesting. I watched it on YouTube.
[00:04:27] [SPEAKER_04]: What we're talking about...
[00:04:29] [SPEAKER_04]: DVD picture quality was great by the way.
[00:04:30] [SPEAKER_04]: ...is the second film by Oscar-nominated documentary filmmaker Nathaniel Kahn.
[00:04:36] [SPEAKER_04]: His second film.
[00:04:38] [SPEAKER_02]: His first film was called My Architect.
[00:04:39] [SPEAKER_02]: It's pretty good.
[00:04:40] [SPEAKER_02]: I liked it.
[00:04:41] [SPEAKER_02]: Good movie.
[00:04:42] [SPEAKER_04]: I haven't seen it in 13 years or whatever.
[00:04:45] [SPEAKER_02]: But it was about his father...
[00:04:47] [SPEAKER_04]: His father was a personal journey through the life of his dad.
[00:04:51] [SPEAKER_02]: His father died when he was young.
[00:04:53] [SPEAKER_02]: He never had much of a relationship with him.
[00:04:54] [SPEAKER_02]: And it's him trying to come to understand now as an adult, his father, through his work.
[00:04:59] [SPEAKER_02]: So he travels around to see the things his father constructed.
[00:05:01] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, right. It's called My Architect.
[00:05:02] [SPEAKER_04]: We're not discussing that film.
[00:05:04] [SPEAKER_04]: Absolutely not discussing it.
[00:05:05] [SPEAKER_02]: We're not going to discuss it.
[00:05:06] [SPEAKER_02]: It lost to...
[00:05:08] [SPEAKER_02]: I don't know. Can you guess?
[00:05:10] [SPEAKER_02]: Was that the Bowling Cup for Columbine year maybe?
[00:05:12] [SPEAKER_02]: 2003?
[00:05:13] [SPEAKER_02]: That sounds possible.
[00:05:14] [SPEAKER_02]: Or would the Bowling Cup come out in 2002 or 2003?
[00:05:18] [SPEAKER_04]: We were at war.
[00:05:21] [SPEAKER_04]: Remember because he gave the...
[00:05:23] [SPEAKER_04]: No, it was The Fog of War.
[00:05:24] [SPEAKER_04]: One of the greatest documentaries ever made.
[00:05:26] [SPEAKER_04]: He's a phenomenal film.
[00:05:27] [SPEAKER_04]: One best documentary, but he was nominated.
[00:05:30] [SPEAKER_04]: And after that...
[00:05:31] [SPEAKER_04]: He made...
[00:05:32] [SPEAKER_04]: He made a movie for the Sci-Fi channel.
[00:05:34] [SPEAKER_04]: Not Sifi as it is now known.
[00:05:37] [SPEAKER_04]: The Sci-Fi Channel.
[00:05:38] [SPEAKER_02]: Sci-Fi.
[00:05:39] [SPEAKER_04]: Remember when fucking Sci-Fi Channel rocked
[00:05:41] [SPEAKER_04]: and like their logo was like the planet Saturn?
[00:05:44] [SPEAKER_04]: It was great.
[00:05:44] [SPEAKER_02]: S-C-I-F-I.
[00:05:46] [SPEAKER_04]: There's a hyphen in there.
[00:05:47] [SPEAKER_04]: C-H-A-N-N-E-L.
[00:05:50] [SPEAKER_04]: The film is the buried secret of M. Night Shyamalan.
[00:05:53] [SPEAKER_02]: Now do you know this, David, that after this...
[00:05:56] [SPEAKER_02]: piece of content...
[00:05:58] [SPEAKER_02]: Nathaniel Kahn made a documentary short.
[00:06:00] [SPEAKER_02]: He did.
[00:06:01] [SPEAKER_02]: That was...
[00:06:02] [SPEAKER_02]: Two hands.
[00:06:03] [SPEAKER_02]: The Leon Fleischer story.
[00:06:05] [SPEAKER_02]: He's made...
[00:06:05] [SPEAKER_02]: He's coming out for two Academy Awards.
[00:06:07] [SPEAKER_02]: But in Oscar sandwich, he got two Oscar nominated projects
[00:06:11] [SPEAKER_02]: on either side of this piece of work.
[00:06:13] [SPEAKER_02]: Good for him.
[00:06:14] [SPEAKER_02]: So backstory.
[00:06:17] [SPEAKER_02]: The year is 2003.
[00:06:19] [SPEAKER_02]: M. Night Shyamalan is deep.
[00:06:21] [SPEAKER_02]: He's shooting my favorite movie of his.
[00:06:23] [SPEAKER_02]: Deep in production on The Village.
[00:06:24] [SPEAKER_02]: Correct.
[00:06:26] [SPEAKER_02]: He is starting to really get into...
[00:06:28] [SPEAKER_04]: He's in Chester County, Pennsylvania.
[00:06:30] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:06:30] [SPEAKER_04]: Shooting this thing.
[00:06:31] [SPEAKER_04]: They cleared out some farmland.
[00:06:32] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:06:33] [SPEAKER_04]: And he's getting really into building this mythology.
[00:06:35] [SPEAKER_04]: We could have done a bit where we just pretended that this was a real documentary,
[00:06:39] [SPEAKER_04]: but that probably wouldn't have been funny, right?
[00:06:40] [SPEAKER_04]: I was just thinking about it.
[00:06:42] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:06:42] [SPEAKER_04]: Doesn't matter. Go ahead.
[00:06:43] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:06:44] [SPEAKER_04]: He's deep in The Village.
[00:06:45] [SPEAKER_02]: I just also thought it would have been funny if we recorded our episode of The Village
[00:06:48] [SPEAKER_02]: and pretended that it was 1872.
[00:06:51] [SPEAKER_02]: Throughout the whole episode.
[00:06:53] [SPEAKER_04]: What is this device in front of me, brother?
[00:06:55] [SPEAKER_02]: No, okay.
[00:06:55] [SPEAKER_02]: I don't remember how they're talking that movie.
[00:06:57] [SPEAKER_02]: He's shooting The Village.
[00:06:59] [SPEAKER_02]: He's shooting The Village and he gets into this idea.
[00:07:01] [SPEAKER_02]: So he goes to Sci-Fi Channel and he's like,
[00:07:02] [SPEAKER_02]: what if we made a documentary?
[00:07:04] [SPEAKER_04]: Do you think he went straight to the Sci-Fi Channel?
[00:07:07] [SPEAKER_04]: Or do you think he went to NBC and NBC was like,
[00:07:10] [SPEAKER_04]: get the fuck out of here?
[00:07:11] [SPEAKER_02]: I think first he went to the U.S. Government Department of Arts and Letters.
[00:07:18] [SPEAKER_04]: He went to Errol Morris.
[00:07:19] [SPEAKER_02]: He took them all down.
[00:07:21] [SPEAKER_02]: He went to every major documentary.
[00:07:24] [SPEAKER_02]: I will say though, Nathan O'Combs is a Philly boy.
[00:07:26] [SPEAKER_02]: So I think he might have been high up the list.
[00:07:27] [SPEAKER_02]: Nathan O'Combs is from Philadelphia.
[00:07:28] [SPEAKER_02]: He'd done some good work and he was a Philly boy.
[00:07:32] [SPEAKER_04]: So yeah.
[00:07:32] [SPEAKER_04]: No.
[00:07:32] [SPEAKER_04]: So Shaman's making The Village.
[00:07:33] [SPEAKER_04]: He goes to the Sci-Fi Channel and he says,
[00:07:37] [SPEAKER_04]: you're going to make a documentary about making The Village.
[00:07:39] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:07:40] [SPEAKER_04]: Right?
[00:07:40] [SPEAKER_04]: Right.
[00:07:41] [SPEAKER_02]: But let's do a Blair Witch style.
[00:07:44] [SPEAKER_02]: Let's pretend that I don't want you to make this documentary.
[00:07:46] [SPEAKER_02]: Let's fake it up.
[00:07:48] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:07:48] [SPEAKER_04]: It's kind of a mix of the Blair Witch project and I don't like,
[00:07:51] [SPEAKER_04]: you know, like that documentary about Metallica.
[00:07:53] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:07:54] [SPEAKER_04]: Some kind of monster.
[00:07:55] [SPEAKER_04]: Some kind of monster.
[00:07:56] [SPEAKER_04]: It's like a found footage horror movie and also about a really annoying like artist.
[00:08:01] [SPEAKER_04]: Yes.
[00:08:02] [SPEAKER_04]: Who is like a total pain in the ass.
[00:08:04] [SPEAKER_02]: But the levels of narcissism and self-indulgence here are...
[00:08:09] [SPEAKER_02]: This is why we have to discuss it.
[00:08:10] [SPEAKER_02]: I want you to make a documentary about people who are so eager to find out everything about me,
[00:08:16] [SPEAKER_02]: but I'm going to pretend like I didn't want you to make this
[00:08:21] [SPEAKER_02]: and publicly play that charade.
[00:08:23] [SPEAKER_02]: Right.
[00:08:25] [SPEAKER_02]: Let's first discuss, I want to just briefly before we get to the content.
[00:08:29] [SPEAKER_04]: Uh-huh.
[00:08:30] [SPEAKER_04]: This was pitched, yes.
[00:08:32] [SPEAKER_04]: And advertises like, oh it's the movie he doesn't want you to see.
[00:08:35] [SPEAKER_04]: It's about M. Night Shyamalan's buried secrets.
[00:08:38] [SPEAKER_04]: All of the secrets.
[00:08:41] [SPEAKER_04]: And they convinced the Associated Press,
[00:08:44] [SPEAKER_04]: which is a national journalistic organization
[00:08:48] [SPEAKER_04]: that they pitched them this and the AP bit
[00:08:52] [SPEAKER_04]: and they said, oh Shyamalan was furious when they made this movie
[00:08:55] [SPEAKER_04]: and he like walked out of filming or whatever.
[00:08:57] [SPEAKER_04]: And then before this thing even aired on the SciFi channel,
[00:09:02] [SPEAKER_04]: SciFi channel and NBC I think who owned them at the time
[00:09:05] [SPEAKER_04]: had to publicly apologize for fooling the press.
[00:09:09] [SPEAKER_04]: Yes.
[00:09:09] [SPEAKER_04]: And so the secret was blown before this thing even aired.
[00:09:14] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, and they...
[00:09:15] [SPEAKER_02]: Because it was getting written up in the papers and stuff
[00:09:18] [SPEAKER_02]: and then I remember in page six
[00:09:20] [SPEAKER_02]: them having an item that was like spoken to people close to production
[00:09:25] [SPEAKER_02]: and I'm hearing that M. Night was very involved with the film
[00:09:28] [SPEAKER_02]: the entire time it was a producer on it this and that.
[00:09:30] [SPEAKER_02]: Like someone else broke the story and NBC Universal had to be like
[00:09:34] [SPEAKER_02]: cards on the table.
[00:09:35] [SPEAKER_04]: It's just funny that they didn't even get to air once
[00:09:37] [SPEAKER_04]: and do its dumb little joke before NBC was like,
[00:09:41] [SPEAKER_04]: we're really sorry we made this thing.
[00:09:43] [SPEAKER_02]: Which also means that by the time it aired
[00:09:45] [SPEAKER_02]: absolutely no one wanted to watch it.
[00:09:47] [SPEAKER_02]: Did anyone watch it?
[00:09:48] [SPEAKER_02]: No, I think it got abysmal ratings
[00:09:50] [SPEAKER_02]: but before we get into it there's something I have to say.
[00:09:53] [SPEAKER_02]: Yep.
[00:09:54] [SPEAKER_02]: Very, very happy to have sitting with us at the table again
[00:10:00] [SPEAKER_02]: in the studio at the table.
[00:10:02] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, yeah.
[00:10:02] [SPEAKER_02]: He's been switching back and forth.
[00:10:04] [SPEAKER_02]: He's here, he's there in a box with a fox.
[00:10:08] [SPEAKER_02]: What's his name?
[00:10:09] [SPEAKER_02]: His name is Bruce Brown.
[00:10:10] [SPEAKER_02]: Great.
[00:10:11] [SPEAKER_05]: Hey guys.
[00:10:12] [SPEAKER_05]: Oh he's happy to be in the room with you.
[00:10:13] [SPEAKER_02]: AK Perdue or Ben, AK The Bendus or AK The Poet Laureate
[00:10:16] [SPEAKER_02]: AK The Haas, AK Mr. Positive, AK Hello Fennel,
[00:10:18] [SPEAKER_02]: AK Birthday, Banny, AK The Tiebreaker,
[00:10:20] [SPEAKER_02]: the Peeper, AK Mr. Positive.
[00:10:24] [SPEAKER_02]: He's not Professor Crispy.
[00:10:26] [SPEAKER_04]: You tried to give him a new one in the last episode.
[00:10:28] [SPEAKER_02]: The Fuckmaster?
[00:10:29] [SPEAKER_05]: I've actually had a few people tell me they like the Fuckmaster.
[00:10:31] [SPEAKER_02]: Really?
[00:10:32] [SPEAKER_02]: He's the Fuckmaster.
[00:10:33] [SPEAKER_02]: Then it's in there.
[00:10:34] [SPEAKER_02]: Now we coined a name, a sort of ceremonial name
[00:10:38] [SPEAKER_02]: when we were shedding our Star Wars wings, right?
[00:10:42] [SPEAKER_02]: Producer Ben Kenobi.
[00:10:43] [SPEAKER_02]: And then as The Force Awakens came out
[00:10:45] [SPEAKER_02]: that was really sort of...
[00:10:47] [SPEAKER_02]: Kylo Ben.
[00:10:48] [SPEAKER_02]: I feel that we need to, you know, add a name
[00:10:50] [SPEAKER_02]: for each miniseries we do.
[00:10:52] [SPEAKER_04]: Oh you want to give him a Shyamalan name?
[00:10:54] [SPEAKER_02]: Ben Knight Shyamalan.
[00:10:56] [SPEAKER_02]: So obvious really.
[00:10:58] [SPEAKER_02]: Don't we not think of that?
[00:11:00] [SPEAKER_02]: So Ben, you've graduated.
[00:11:02] [SPEAKER_02]: Ben you're here, Ben Knight.
[00:11:03] [SPEAKER_02]: You've graduated from the Pod Night Shyamakast miniseries
[00:11:08] [SPEAKER_02]: and you walk out of it with another title
[00:11:10] [SPEAKER_02]: on your chest.
[00:11:11] [SPEAKER_02]: Ben Knight Shyamalan.
[00:11:12] [SPEAKER_02]: How are you doing today?
[00:11:13] [SPEAKER_05]: I'm doing fucking fantastic.
[00:11:15] [SPEAKER_05]: We're done with this shit.
[00:11:17] [SPEAKER_05]: Yep.
[00:11:18] [SPEAKER_05]: No more Shyamalan.
[00:11:20] [SPEAKER_05]: This shit.
[00:11:21] [SPEAKER_04]: The thing with Shyamalan,
[00:11:22] [SPEAKER_04]: I think we talked about it in the episode.
[00:11:24] [SPEAKER_04]: It's like you're like, oh fun movies,
[00:11:26] [SPEAKER_04]: interesting, great.
[00:11:27] [SPEAKER_04]: And then you just hit a wall and it's just garbage.
[00:11:28] [SPEAKER_04]: Like there's no preparation
[00:11:31] [SPEAKER_04]: and then you don't pull out of it.
[00:11:33] [SPEAKER_04]: The visit I guess is good.
[00:11:34] [SPEAKER_04]: But you know like...
[00:11:35] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah it's...
[00:11:35] [SPEAKER_04]: It's weeks of nonsense.
[00:11:37] [SPEAKER_02]: It's a bummer.
[00:11:38] [SPEAKER_02]: It's hard.
[00:11:39] [SPEAKER_02]: When we had like a couple years in between each of those movies
[00:11:41] [SPEAKER_02]: and you were like, I don't know,
[00:11:42] [SPEAKER_02]: maybe he's gonna pull it out?
[00:11:43] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:11:43] [SPEAKER_02]: Right, right.
[00:11:44] [SPEAKER_02]: But watching them and knowing like,
[00:11:45] [SPEAKER_02]: five days I have to watch that.
[00:11:47] [SPEAKER_02]: You know, like knowing what's coming up next.
[00:11:50] [SPEAKER_02]: We got a very nice write-up from Pace Magazine.
[00:11:53] [SPEAKER_02]: Thank you Pace Magazine.
[00:11:54] [SPEAKER_02]: I don't know why they decided to do that
[00:11:56] [SPEAKER_02]: but they would...
[00:11:57] [SPEAKER_02]: So a writer I'd never heard of.
[00:11:58] [SPEAKER_02]: I like saw the piece and I was like,
[00:11:59] [SPEAKER_02]: oh it must be someone who like,
[00:12:01] [SPEAKER_02]: we know who like follows us on Twitter
[00:12:02] [SPEAKER_02]: who wrote it up.
[00:12:03] [SPEAKER_02]: Someone I'd never heard of before.
[00:12:04] [SPEAKER_02]: Right.
[00:12:05] [SPEAKER_02]: And I'm pretty excited now
[00:12:06] [SPEAKER_02]: but thank you for writing this up.
[00:12:07] [SPEAKER_02]: But they said like,
[00:12:08] [SPEAKER_02]: they were reviewing our episode on the visit.
[00:12:11] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:12:11] [SPEAKER_02]: And they were saying it was nice
[00:12:13] [SPEAKER_02]: and kind of emotional to hear the uplift
[00:12:14] [SPEAKER_02]: in our voice that we were like ending
[00:12:16] [SPEAKER_02]: on a note of promise
[00:12:17] [SPEAKER_02]: that we felt like we were being saved from this thing.
[00:12:20] [SPEAKER_04]: So then we decided to do an episode
[00:12:21] [SPEAKER_04]: about the buried secret of Edmine Shyamalan.
[00:12:23] [SPEAKER_04]: We're just burying ourselves back under.
[00:12:25] [SPEAKER_04]: He didn't make it.
[00:12:26] [SPEAKER_04]: He didn't make it.
[00:12:26] [SPEAKER_04]: He didn't direct it.
[00:12:27] [SPEAKER_04]: Right.
[00:12:27] [SPEAKER_04]: He did, was involved, clearly.
[00:12:29] [SPEAKER_05]: We didn't necessarily feed everyone lines
[00:12:31] [SPEAKER_05]: when talking about him.
[00:12:33] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:12:33] [SPEAKER_02]: No.
[00:12:34] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:12:35] [SPEAKER_02]: I swear to God.
[00:12:36] [SPEAKER_02]: We got a lot of like...
[00:12:37] [SPEAKER_02]: We've got a lot of questions.
[00:12:38] [SPEAKER_02]: Like people being like,
[00:12:39] [SPEAKER_02]: aren't you gonna cover devil?
[00:12:40] [SPEAKER_02]: Didn't he direct that?
[00:12:40] [SPEAKER_02]: No, he produced that.
[00:12:41] [SPEAKER_02]: He produced it and I believe he wrote the story.
[00:12:43] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:12:43] [SPEAKER_02]: There was a shingle he was gonna start up
[00:12:45] [SPEAKER_02]: called The Night Chronicles
[00:12:47] [SPEAKER_02]: and Universal was gonna release
[00:12:48] [SPEAKER_02]: low budget films that were his ideas
[00:12:51] [SPEAKER_02]: and that was the only one that happened.
[00:12:53] [SPEAKER_02]: Wayward Pines,
[00:12:53] [SPEAKER_02]: I believe he only directed the pilot.
[00:12:55] [SPEAKER_02]: Correct.
[00:12:55] [SPEAKER_02]: I mean there's some things like this
[00:12:57] [SPEAKER_02]: where people ask him,
[00:12:58] [SPEAKER_02]: oh are you gonna cover Stuart Little?
[00:12:59] [SPEAKER_02]: No, he's one of two credit screenwriters.
[00:13:01] [SPEAKER_02]: I think he enjoyed writing Stuart Little
[00:13:03] [SPEAKER_02]: and that's the end of that.
[00:13:04] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, exactly.
[00:13:05] [SPEAKER_02]: He was a ghost writer.
[00:13:07] [SPEAKER_02]: No pun intended.
[00:13:09] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh.
[00:13:09] [SPEAKER_02]: On She's All That, are we gonna cover that?
[00:13:11] [SPEAKER_02]: No, we're not gonna cover it.
[00:13:12] [SPEAKER_02]: We could be here all day.
[00:13:13] [SPEAKER_02]: You know, we're not...
[00:13:14] [SPEAKER_02]: But buried secret.
[00:13:14] [SPEAKER_02]: We wanted to do one final thing.
[00:13:16] [SPEAKER_02]: Just to think about him.
[00:13:18] [SPEAKER_02]: And this is, you know,
[00:13:19] [SPEAKER_02]: I think this film,
[00:13:21] [SPEAKER_02]: he did not direct it but it was his brainchild.
[00:13:24] [SPEAKER_02]: He willed into existence.
[00:13:25] [SPEAKER_02]: The only reason it was made
[00:13:26] [SPEAKER_02]: was because he convinced other people
[00:13:28] [SPEAKER_02]: it was worth making.
[00:13:29] [SPEAKER_02]: Sure.
[00:13:29] [SPEAKER_02]: And it is...
[00:13:30] [SPEAKER_04]: And it was coming like,
[00:13:32] [SPEAKER_04]: it was coming out of Blair Witchy.
[00:13:33] [SPEAKER_04]: That was still hot.
[00:13:35] [SPEAKER_04]: The sort of mockumentary horror movie.
[00:13:37] [SPEAKER_02]: I also think doing this right after the visit
[00:13:39] [SPEAKER_02]: is fascinating because the visit
[00:13:40] [SPEAKER_02]: is also a fake documentary.
[00:13:42] [SPEAKER_02]: True.
[00:13:42] [SPEAKER_02]: Albeit infinitely more successful.
[00:13:44] [SPEAKER_04]: Most found footage movies are not fake documentaries.
[00:13:46] [SPEAKER_04]: Yes.
[00:13:46] [SPEAKER_04]: It's a slightly different genre.
[00:13:48] [SPEAKER_04]: Whereas the visit is a fake documentary.
[00:13:50] [SPEAKER_04]: It's been cut together.
[00:13:51] [SPEAKER_04]: It's not a found footage film.
[00:13:52] [SPEAKER_04]: Same thing with Blair Witch, you know...
[00:13:53] [SPEAKER_02]: And same thing with this.
[00:13:54] [SPEAKER_02]: This is a film that is ostensibly...
[00:13:56] [SPEAKER_02]: It's not a horror movie.
[00:13:58] [SPEAKER_02]: No.
[00:13:58] [SPEAKER_02]: This film.
[00:13:58] [SPEAKER_04]: It is a nothing movie.
[00:13:59] [SPEAKER_02]: No.
[00:14:00] [SPEAKER_02]: Okay, here's the other thing we need to talk about
[00:14:01] [SPEAKER_02]: before we get into the film.
[00:14:03] [SPEAKER_02]: You're in it.
[00:14:04] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm not in this movie.
[00:14:05] [SPEAKER_02]: No.
[00:14:05] [SPEAKER_02]: Okay.
[00:14:06] [SPEAKER_02]: So I had not seen it before tonight
[00:14:09] [SPEAKER_02]: and then this morning I watched it.
[00:14:10] [SPEAKER_04]: You are...
[00:14:11] [SPEAKER_04]: According to IMDb, you are 13th in appearance.
[00:14:21] [SPEAKER_02]: 13th?
[00:14:21] [SPEAKER_02]: As a teenage fan.
[00:14:23] [SPEAKER_02]: Might be a sign.
[00:14:25] [SPEAKER_02]: Okay.
[00:14:27] [SPEAKER_02]: We need to discuss all of this, okay?
[00:14:30] [SPEAKER_02]: I said...
[00:14:32] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm so excited.
[00:14:32] [SPEAKER_02]: I said somewhat erroneously in the...
[00:14:35] [SPEAKER_02]: Our last airbender episode was...
[00:14:36] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, you said that you're sort of biking around in the background basically.
[00:14:39] [SPEAKER_04]: Of a scene.
[00:14:40] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, but I also said that
[00:14:42] [SPEAKER_02]: last airbender was the first movie I auditioned for.
[00:14:44] [SPEAKER_02]: Which is obviously not true because this was filmed before that, right?
[00:14:47] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:14:48] [SPEAKER_02]: So I started doing stand-up when I was 10 years old
[00:14:51] [SPEAKER_02]: because I'm a broken human being.
[00:14:53] [SPEAKER_02]: And I did that for a couple years
[00:14:55] [SPEAKER_02]: and I got some attention.
[00:14:58] [SPEAKER_02]: You were a little...
[00:14:59] [SPEAKER_02]: The stand-up tyke.
[00:14:59] [SPEAKER_02]: I was a little tyke.
[00:15:00] [SPEAKER_02]: You were like Lights, Camera, Jackson, but with stand-up.
[00:15:02] [SPEAKER_02]: I was like Lights, Camera, Jackson.
[00:15:03] [SPEAKER_02]: I only did political humor.
[00:15:04] [SPEAKER_02]: So it was like a weird...
[00:15:05] [SPEAKER_02]: What?
[00:15:06] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:15:06] [SPEAKER_02]: Are you serious?
[00:15:08] [SPEAKER_02]: Have we ever talked about this?
[00:15:09] [SPEAKER_02]: No.
[00:15:10] [SPEAKER_02]: My dad really liked politics and the only way I could make my dad laugh was if I made jokes
[00:15:13] [SPEAKER_02]: about politicians.
[00:15:14] [SPEAKER_02]: So I like got really good at making jokes about politicians around the house.
[00:15:18] [SPEAKER_02]: I wasn't talking about like fucking policy.
[00:15:20] [SPEAKER_02]: I understand.
[00:15:21] [SPEAKER_02]: I was like, oh, Catherine Harris wears too much makeup or like, you know...
[00:15:24] [SPEAKER_02]: I know, I get you.
[00:15:25] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, whatever the lace scandal was.
[00:15:27] [SPEAKER_02]: I was really good on political scandals, right?
[00:15:30] [SPEAKER_02]: So then when I started doing stand-up I was like,
[00:15:32] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm gonna do stuff that makes my dad laugh.
[00:15:34] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:15:34] [SPEAKER_02]: And then people were like, what the fuck is this robot child doing here?
[00:15:38] [SPEAKER_04]: So you really were Lights, Camera, Jackson.
[00:15:40] [SPEAKER_02]: I was.
[00:15:40] [SPEAKER_02]: I was like a four-foot negative 12 inches tall and my T-shirt was down to my knees
[00:15:47] [SPEAKER_02]: because no clothes fit me and I wear a backwards hat all the time
[00:15:51] [SPEAKER_02]: and I had like a helium voice.
[00:15:53] [SPEAKER_02]: And I did like all political humor and it got some attention, right?
[00:15:58] [SPEAKER_04]: Okay.
[00:15:59] [SPEAKER_04]: And so you're saying you got cast off of this?
[00:16:01] [SPEAKER_02]: No, I'm saying I started auditioning.
[00:16:02] [SPEAKER_04]: M Night was in the audience.
[00:16:03] [SPEAKER_04]: You didn't open Mike and Philly.
[00:16:04] [SPEAKER_04]: What's the Philly venue?
[00:16:06] [SPEAKER_04]: Funny bomb.
[00:16:07] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, the funny...
[00:16:08] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, helium.
[00:16:09] [SPEAKER_04]: Fuck you nailed it.
[00:16:10] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, good job, Ben.
[00:16:11] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:16:12] [SPEAKER_02]: I... my parents very much didn't want me to become an actor at all.
[00:16:18] [SPEAKER_02]: Sure.
[00:16:18] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, they were smart.
[00:16:19] [SPEAKER_02]: And especially didn't want me to be like a stage kid
[00:16:21] [SPEAKER_02]: and I was like at the age of four like,
[00:16:23] [SPEAKER_02]: I don't wanna be in movies.
[00:16:24] [SPEAKER_02]: And they were like absolutely not.
[00:16:26] [SPEAKER_02]: Absolutely not.
[00:16:27] [SPEAKER_02]: By starting the stand-up thing and then I got attention from that
[00:16:30] [SPEAKER_02]: and my mother was...
[00:16:32] [SPEAKER_04]: What did your parents want you to do?
[00:16:34] [SPEAKER_02]: I don't know.
[00:16:35] [SPEAKER_02]: I just think...
[00:16:36] [SPEAKER_02]: They weren't guiding you towards like being a lawyer.
[00:16:39] [SPEAKER_02]: No, there never seemed to be any guidance.
[00:16:42] [SPEAKER_02]: They... I think they actually... writer maybe?
[00:16:46] [SPEAKER_02]: But outside of the entertainment industry maybe?
[00:16:48] [SPEAKER_02]: Okay, sure.
[00:16:48] [SPEAKER_02]: You know, maybe like a playwright would have been their ideal.
[00:16:51] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm just looking at Lights, Cameron Jackson's,
[00:16:53] [SPEAKER_02]: Twitter feed right now.
[00:16:53] [SPEAKER_04]: I gotta be honest.
[00:16:54] [SPEAKER_04]: Any good stuff?
[00:16:55] [SPEAKER_04]: Well, he brought the boss to a screening of the boss.
[00:16:58] [SPEAKER_04]: By the way, the boss is his mother.
[00:17:01] [SPEAKER_04]: Oh, Jesus Christ.
[00:17:02] [SPEAKER_04]: He wished Patty Arquette a happy birthday.
[00:17:05] [SPEAKER_04]: Did he call her Patty or are we calling her Patty?
[00:17:06] [SPEAKER_04]: She is at Patty Arquette on Twitter.
[00:17:09] [SPEAKER_04]: Oh, that's cool.
[00:17:09] [SPEAKER_04]: And he said have a medium-sized celebration,
[00:17:12] [SPEAKER_04]: which I believe is a reference to her canceled TV show, Medium.
[00:17:15] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:17:16] [SPEAKER_02]: Lights, Cameron Jackson has blocked me on Twitter.
[00:17:19] [SPEAKER_02]: I forgot about it.
[00:17:21] [SPEAKER_02]: And I hate it because I like looking at his tweets
[00:17:24] [SPEAKER_02]: and I can only see them now when other people retweet them.
[00:17:27] [SPEAKER_02]: I need to like...
[00:17:28] [SPEAKER_04]: Oh, he went to visit Suni Purchase
[00:17:31] [SPEAKER_04]: because it's time to start seriously thinking about college.
[00:17:34] [SPEAKER_04]: Then he posted a picture of himself by a clock.
[00:17:37] [SPEAKER_02]: Have we talked about trying to get him as a guest on this show?
[00:17:39] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I don't want to do that.
[00:17:40] [SPEAKER_02]: You don't want to do that?
[00:17:42] [SPEAKER_02]: We've talked about it.
[00:17:43] [SPEAKER_02]: I'd love to do it.
[00:17:43] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I know.
[00:17:46] [SPEAKER_02]: My mother was an actress.
[00:17:50] [SPEAKER_02]: She retired when I was born.
[00:17:53] [SPEAKER_02]: So she really wanted to be in the film industry
[00:17:56] [SPEAKER_02]: and sort of couldn't.
[00:17:57] [SPEAKER_02]: Pull it off.
[00:17:58] [SPEAKER_02]: No, I understand.
[00:18:00] [SPEAKER_02]: And my father ended up working in the film industry by accident
[00:18:04] [SPEAKER_02]: and hated it.
[00:18:05] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:18:05] [SPEAKER_02]: And now as a teacher and like teaches students how to not
[00:18:08] [SPEAKER_02]: make all the mistakes he made in his life.
[00:18:10] [SPEAKER_02]: Right.
[00:18:10] [SPEAKER_02]: And he finds that cathartic.
[00:18:12] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:18:12] [SPEAKER_02]: But I had two parents, like one who wanted to be in the
[00:18:14] [SPEAKER_02]: industry and was miserable because she couldn't hit what
[00:18:18] [SPEAKER_02]: she wanted to hit.
[00:18:19] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:18:20] [SPEAKER_02]: And one who didn't want to be in it and was miserable
[00:18:21] [SPEAKER_02]: because he hated being in it.
[00:18:23] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:18:24] [SPEAKER_02]: And so both of my parents were like,
[00:18:24] [SPEAKER_02]: don't do this.
[00:18:26] [SPEAKER_02]: But you did it.
[00:18:27] [SPEAKER_02]: I did it, of course, because they told me not to do it.
[00:18:29] [SPEAKER_02]: It's the same reason I don't speak French.
[00:18:31] [SPEAKER_02]: It's because my mom wanted me to speak French.
[00:18:32] [SPEAKER_02]: When I was doing stand up, started like putting me up for
[00:18:34] [SPEAKER_02]: audition.
[00:18:35] [SPEAKER_02]: And so I was very sporadically throughout my adolescence
[00:18:38] [SPEAKER_02]: auditioning for stuff and not getting jobs.
[00:18:41] [SPEAKER_02]: No, I didn't get you.
[00:18:41] [SPEAKER_02]: But I was very sporadically doing that.
[00:18:44] [SPEAKER_02]: And this, the Barry Tigger and I, Sean Lomb,
[00:18:46] [SPEAKER_02]: was the one job I ever got anyway.
[00:18:50] [SPEAKER_02]: And then when I went off to college,
[00:18:52] [SPEAKER_02]: I sort of had this realization that I wanted to be acting.
[00:18:55] [SPEAKER_02]: And I dropped out and I started...
[00:18:56] [SPEAKER_02]: Right, and you made Bore the Guns.
[00:18:57] [SPEAKER_02]: Doing it seriously.
[00:18:59] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:18:59] [SPEAKER_02]: Right.
[00:18:59] [SPEAKER_02]: I made Bore the Guns and the rest is history.
[00:19:01] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:19:01] [SPEAKER_02]: Wait, you were in four episodes of Gravity?
[00:19:04] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:19:05] [SPEAKER_02]: Wow.
[00:19:05] [SPEAKER_02]: How was that?
[00:19:06] [SPEAKER_02]: I shot four episodes worth of scenes in an hour and a half.
[00:19:09] [SPEAKER_02]: Wow, Mike Binder.
[00:19:10] [SPEAKER_02]: Not Mike Binder.
[00:19:11] [SPEAKER_02]: It's the other one.
[00:19:12] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh, it's the other guy.
[00:19:13] [SPEAKER_04]: It's the other guy I can't stand who seems to make
[00:19:15] [SPEAKER_04]: an incredible amount of things.
[00:19:18] [SPEAKER_04]: It's not Mike Binder.
[00:19:19] [SPEAKER_04]: You're right.
[00:19:20] [SPEAKER_04]: But the fuck is his name?
[00:19:21] [SPEAKER_04]: Wait a minute.
[00:19:21] [SPEAKER_02]: When I said the other one, Eric Schaefer.
[00:19:22] [SPEAKER_02]: Eric Schaefer, yes.
[00:19:24] [SPEAKER_02]: This is a nice walk down memory lane.
[00:19:25] [SPEAKER_02]: Me and Pilot were just talking about Gravity on...
[00:19:28] [SPEAKER_02]: Pass guest, Pilot Vero.
[00:19:30] [SPEAKER_04]: About how it was arguably the worst television show ever created.
[00:19:33] [SPEAKER_04]: No offense.
[00:19:33] [SPEAKER_02]: No, many thoughts though.
[00:19:35] [SPEAKER_02]: Pilot cover Gravity or review Gravity for AV Club?
[00:19:39] [SPEAKER_02]: I don't believe so.
[00:19:40] [SPEAKER_02]: Because I distinctly remember the AV Club review,
[00:19:42] [SPEAKER_02]: which the opening sentence was,
[00:19:43] [SPEAKER_02]: Gravity easily the worst television series of the year.
[00:19:47] [SPEAKER_04]: It was so bad.
[00:19:49] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I played a gay computer hacker who joked about...
[00:19:52] [SPEAKER_02]: Kristen Ritter.
[00:19:53] [SPEAKER_02]: And Stacey's mom was on it.
[00:19:55] [SPEAKER_02]: What's her name?
[00:19:56] [SPEAKER_04]: Pretty hard to find Stacey's mom from this Mountain of Wainsaw.
[00:19:59] [SPEAKER_04]: Rachel Hunter is not her name yet.
[00:20:02] [SPEAKER_04]: It's hard to find the AV Club's Gravity review
[00:20:05] [SPEAKER_04]: because there's also reviews of the great cartoon series
[00:20:07] [SPEAKER_04]: Gravity Falls.
[00:20:09] [SPEAKER_02]: So yeah, I'm not going to find it.
[00:20:11] [SPEAKER_02]: The last Airpender was like the first thing
[00:20:12] [SPEAKER_02]: I auditioned for when I was like,
[00:20:14] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm trying to be an actor now.
[00:20:16] [SPEAKER_05]: You're okay to talk about this though, right?
[00:20:18] [SPEAKER_05]: We're not like...
[00:20:20] [SPEAKER_05]: No.
[00:20:20] [SPEAKER_05]: You're okay with it?
[00:20:22] [SPEAKER_05]: Because if you have a problem with this,
[00:20:24] [SPEAKER_05]: we could stop right now.
[00:20:26] [SPEAKER_05]: I just want to make sure you're good.
[00:20:28] [SPEAKER_02]: Ben is functioning as my PR person for this episode.
[00:20:30] [SPEAKER_02]: Refin, if you don't want to talk about this...
[00:20:32] [SPEAKER_02]: No, I'm comfortable talking about it.
[00:20:33] [SPEAKER_02]: Will you just shoe that crow out of the studio?
[00:20:35] [SPEAKER_02]: I will.
[00:20:36] [SPEAKER_02]: You guys shouldn't watch this
[00:20:39] [SPEAKER_04]: because it's very long and very bad.
[00:20:41] [SPEAKER_04]: But I will say if you do watch it,
[00:20:43] [SPEAKER_04]: you will understand the handful of references
[00:20:45] [SPEAKER_04]: we make to it in this episode.
[00:20:46] [SPEAKER_02]: Okay, so here's the end of my
[00:20:50] [SPEAKER_02]: involvement and connection to this thing.
[00:20:51] [SPEAKER_02]: You're cast in this thing as a teenage fan.
[00:20:53] [SPEAKER_02]: The casting director, Doug Abel,
[00:20:54] [SPEAKER_02]: who I referenced in previous episodes,
[00:20:57] [SPEAKER_02]: was one of the guys who would call me
[00:20:58] [SPEAKER_02]: into audition for stuff.
[00:20:59] [SPEAKER_02]: And I was a big M Night Shyamalan fan
[00:21:01] [SPEAKER_02]: and they called me into audition for this stuff
[00:21:03] [SPEAKER_02]: and they were like, it's a top secret project.
[00:21:05] [SPEAKER_02]: It's an M Night Shyamalan thing.
[00:21:06] [SPEAKER_02]: We need improvisers.
[00:21:08] [SPEAKER_02]: Did you sign a non-disclosure agreement?
[00:21:10] [SPEAKER_02]: So this is the first time I've ever talked about this.
[00:21:13] [SPEAKER_04]: Breach and contract actually?
[00:21:14] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, probably.
[00:21:15] [SPEAKER_04]: Well, I said everyone talked about it.
[00:21:16] [SPEAKER_04]: Just say allegedly.
[00:21:17] [SPEAKER_02]: Allegedly. Allegedly.
[00:21:19] [SPEAKER_02]: Boom!
[00:21:19] [SPEAKER_02]: Allegedly I auditioned for this, right?
[00:21:22] [SPEAKER_02]: Alright, let's wrap this story up.
[00:21:23] [SPEAKER_04]: They were like, no, you're still auditioning for it.
[00:21:25] [SPEAKER_04]: Fucking hell.
[00:21:26] [SPEAKER_02]: No, in the audition they just said like,
[00:21:27] [SPEAKER_02]: okay, so just talk to me about it.
[00:21:29] [SPEAKER_02]: What do you like about M Night Shyamalan's movies?
[00:21:31] [SPEAKER_02]: And just sort of imply that you think
[00:21:33] [SPEAKER_02]: that there's some bigger phenomenon going on.
[00:21:35] [SPEAKER_02]: But don't say what it is.
[00:21:36] [SPEAKER_02]: And it was him interviewing me.
[00:21:37] [SPEAKER_02]: Like the film phenomena.
[00:21:38] [SPEAKER_02]: Right.
[00:21:39] [SPEAKER_02]: And then I got the part.
[00:21:42] [SPEAKER_02]: I was really excited.
[00:21:43] [SPEAKER_02]: Got to miss school for a day.
[00:21:45] [SPEAKER_02]: Which is cool.
[00:21:46] [SPEAKER_02]: Freshman year at high school, right?
[00:21:48] [SPEAKER_02]: Got two scenes.
[00:21:49] [SPEAKER_02]: So if you've watched this film,
[00:21:51] [SPEAKER_02]: I shot two scenes.
[00:21:53] [SPEAKER_02]: I went home.
[00:21:53] [SPEAKER_02]: I was back at school the next day.
[00:21:55] [SPEAKER_02]: I took the train in and out of Philly.
[00:21:57] [SPEAKER_02]: The iconic Philly train station from Unbreakable.
[00:22:01] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, absolutely.
[00:22:02] [SPEAKER_02]: I was waiting there, right?
[00:22:04] [SPEAKER_02]: I thought I had been completely cut out of the film.
[00:22:06] [SPEAKER_02]: And you were right.
[00:22:07] [SPEAKER_02]: Because I thought the role had been cut out.
[00:22:09] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, yeah, I understand you.
[00:22:11] [SPEAKER_02]: Then the reviews started coming out.
[00:22:12] [SPEAKER_02]: And they all said Griffin Newman ruins the film.
[00:22:15] [SPEAKER_02]: So I was like, I guess they recast it.
[00:22:17] Right.
[00:22:18] [SPEAKER_02]: But I might be in there like...
[00:22:21] [SPEAKER_02]: In there somewhere.
[00:22:21] [SPEAKER_02]: In a group thing.
[00:22:22] [SPEAKER_02]: You know?
[00:22:23] [SPEAKER_02]: You didn't worry enough to actually watch the fucking film.
[00:22:25] [SPEAKER_02]: I never wanted to watch it.
[00:22:26] [SPEAKER_02]: But I thought I was...
[00:22:27] [SPEAKER_02]: So here's where my role would have been.
[00:22:29] [SPEAKER_02]: There's a scene in the film.
[00:22:30] [SPEAKER_02]: Pretty early on.
[00:22:30] [SPEAKER_02]: Should we start from the beginning of the movie?
[00:22:31] [SPEAKER_04]: Okay, so the movie is about Nathaniel Kahn
[00:22:33] [SPEAKER_04]: being contracted to make a run-of-the-mill documentary.
[00:22:37] [SPEAKER_04]: Although we do begin, I suppose, in media's res.
[00:22:39] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, we have to say.
[00:22:40] [SPEAKER_02]: Where he's like, he's been checked out.
[00:22:42] [SPEAKER_02]: It's a panning shot of an empty hotel room, right?
[00:22:45] [SPEAKER_02]: That's perfectly made.
[00:22:46] [SPEAKER_02]: I won't dignify this.
[00:22:47] [SPEAKER_02]: You don't see any people on screen.
[00:22:49] [SPEAKER_02]: And he's like angrily on the phone.
[00:22:49] [SPEAKER_02]: And you hear his voice and he's like,
[00:22:51] [SPEAKER_02]: we did not...
[00:22:51] [SPEAKER_02]: My party has not checked out.
[00:22:53] [SPEAKER_02]: What is happening here?
[00:22:54] [SPEAKER_02]: My computer's gone?
[00:22:55] [SPEAKER_02]: As if it's like a stunning occurrence.
[00:22:57] [SPEAKER_02]: Anyway.
[00:22:58] [SPEAKER_02]: Usually when things start in media res,
[00:22:59] [SPEAKER_02]: the idea is you go,
[00:23:00] [SPEAKER_02]: how did you get to this point?
[00:23:01] [SPEAKER_02]: How could this have happened?
[00:23:03] [SPEAKER_02]: And then you have to back up to show what happened.
[00:23:05] [SPEAKER_04]: So he's making a movie about M. Night Shyamal
[00:23:07] [SPEAKER_04]: and making The Village.
[00:23:08] [SPEAKER_04]: He's been contracted to make like a making-off, essentially.
[00:23:10] [SPEAKER_04]: Right.
[00:23:11] [SPEAKER_04]: At one point, Adrian Brody is like,
[00:23:13] [SPEAKER_04]: well, this was an EPK,
[00:23:14] [SPEAKER_04]: which is an electronic press kit for you guys,
[00:23:17] [SPEAKER_04]: which is like a DVD extras.
[00:23:19] [SPEAKER_02]: And that's like the production itself
[00:23:21] [SPEAKER_02]: is filming that stuff.
[00:23:22] [SPEAKER_02]: Exactly.
[00:23:22] [SPEAKER_04]: Then you're allowed to like,
[00:23:23] [SPEAKER_04]: you can be candid and say like,
[00:23:25] [SPEAKER_04]: oh, it's crazy, I'm Adrian Brody
[00:23:26] [SPEAKER_04]: and it's crazy when I stab Joaquin Phoenix.
[00:23:28] [SPEAKER_02]: So I guess the reality of this film
[00:23:29] [SPEAKER_02]: is that the sci-fi channel came to him,
[00:23:32] [SPEAKER_02]: said M. Night Shyamalan's making a new movie.
[00:23:35] [SPEAKER_02]: We want to independently make a film
[00:23:37] [SPEAKER_02]: behind the scenes of his film.
[00:23:39] [SPEAKER_02]: So we're going to try to get you clearance
[00:23:41] [SPEAKER_02]: as if you are a press person,
[00:23:42] [SPEAKER_02]: produce an hour and a half.
[00:23:44] [SPEAKER_02]: Two hours.
[00:23:45] [SPEAKER_02]: Well, I'm saying maybe at the time
[00:23:46] [SPEAKER_02]: they thought it was going to happen.
[00:23:47] [SPEAKER_04]: Oh, within the reality of this fucking movie.
[00:23:48] [SPEAKER_04]: Within the reality of this fucking fictional movie.
[00:23:50] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, right, but I think that's the idea.
[00:23:52] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, whatever, whatever.
[00:23:53] [SPEAKER_02]: But that is never happening in the history of the world.
[00:23:55] [SPEAKER_02]: There's an unauthorized feature-length documentary.
[00:23:58] [SPEAKER_02]: No, but it is authorized.
[00:23:59] [SPEAKER_04]: They're saying authorized, non-authorized.
[00:24:02] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, I don't know.
[00:24:02] [SPEAKER_04]: It doesn't...
[00:24:03] [SPEAKER_04]: You don't have to answer that question,
[00:24:05] [SPEAKER_04]: Griff, if you don't want to.
[00:24:05] [SPEAKER_04]: I appreciate that back thing.
[00:24:06] [SPEAKER_04]: He goes to the set of The Village.
[00:24:08] [SPEAKER_04]: It's the real set.
[00:24:09] [SPEAKER_04]: You know, things happening.
[00:24:11] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, night's like really intense
[00:24:12] [SPEAKER_04]: and like don't get in his eye line when he's directing
[00:24:15] [SPEAKER_04]: and he doesn't want to interview on camera right now,
[00:24:17] [SPEAKER_04]: but you can go meet him.
[00:24:18] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:24:18] [SPEAKER_04]: And he goes to meet him
[00:24:20] [SPEAKER_04]: and like there's weird electronic interference.
[00:24:22] [SPEAKER_04]: And it says like it's a super title
[00:24:24] [SPEAKER_04]: like audio cut out,
[00:24:25] [SPEAKER_04]: audio malfunction.
[00:24:26] [SPEAKER_04]: Audio malfunction is the first time this happens
[00:24:28] [SPEAKER_04]: several times, you know.
[00:24:30] [SPEAKER_04]: And you just hear, I'm like go like
[00:24:31] [SPEAKER_04]: kkkk kkkk kkkk.
[00:24:32] [SPEAKER_04]: It's a lot kkkk kkkk.
[00:24:33] [SPEAKER_04]: So it's like the movie is trying to present him
[00:24:35] [SPEAKER_04]: as this like reclusive,
[00:24:36] [SPEAKER_04]: yeah, crazy person.
[00:24:38] [SPEAKER_04]: And so they go to his house,
[00:24:40] [SPEAKER_04]: which is an objectively creepy thing to do
[00:24:43] [SPEAKER_04]: so early in the movie.
[00:24:45] [SPEAKER_04]: Right.
[00:24:45] [SPEAKER_04]: To go outside his gated mansion
[00:24:47] [SPEAKER_04]: in the pencil, the Philadelphia suburbs.
[00:24:50] [SPEAKER_04]: Standing outside this house,
[00:24:52] [SPEAKER_04]: teenagers wearing hoodies,
[00:24:54] [SPEAKER_04]: and Nathaniel Conn is like,
[00:24:55] [SPEAKER_04]: oh well you know they're probably just hanging out
[00:24:56] [SPEAKER_04]: they like wanted autograph for.
[00:24:57] [SPEAKER_04]: When has that ever happened?
[00:24:59] [SPEAKER_04]: Right.
[00:24:59] [SPEAKER_04]: When has that ever happened?
[00:25:01] [SPEAKER_04]: Absolutely.
[00:25:02] [SPEAKER_04]: Who's the most famous director
[00:25:03] [SPEAKER_02]: that's never happened once in their entire life?
[00:25:05] [SPEAKER_02]: Like the only people who will wait outside a gate
[00:25:07] [SPEAKER_02]: like that are people who's wires
[00:25:09] [SPEAKER_02]: are so crossed that they believe
[00:25:11] [SPEAKER_02]: like Leo's gonna see me and fall in love with me.
[00:25:13] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, of course.
[00:25:14] [SPEAKER_02]: Right.
[00:25:14] [SPEAKER_04]: I mean it's supposed to believe
[00:25:15] [SPEAKER_02]: that there are a bunch of teenagers
[00:25:17] [SPEAKER_04]: because they love M. Night Shyamalan
[00:25:19] [SPEAKER_04]: and the mysterious,
[00:25:21] [SPEAKER_04]: supernatural origins of his directing powers.
[00:25:24] [SPEAKER_04]: But once again
[00:25:25] [SPEAKER_02]: That is literally what they say.
[00:25:26] [SPEAKER_02]: I just want to restate
[00:25:27] [SPEAKER_04]: the implications that they are there frequently.
[00:25:29] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, all the time
[00:25:30] [SPEAKER_04]: and they're just like you don't know
[00:25:32] [SPEAKER_04]: like as if it is commonly known
[00:25:34] [SPEAKER_04]: that M. Night Shyamalan can commune
[00:25:36] [SPEAKER_04]: with the spirit world.
[00:25:38] [SPEAKER_04]: Right?
[00:25:39] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, this is a scene you were supposed to be in.
[00:25:40] [SPEAKER_02]: In touch with another dimension.
[00:25:42] [SPEAKER_02]: So I was supposed to be one of these kids
[00:25:43] [SPEAKER_02]: I was riding a bicycle,
[00:25:44] [SPEAKER_02]: I was quiet,
[00:25:45] [SPEAKER_02]: I was wearing a hoodie, right?
[00:25:46] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, sure.
[00:25:47] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm not visible at all in this film.
[00:25:49] [SPEAKER_02]: This scene was totally reshot.
[00:25:50] [SPEAKER_02]: I think it was even like a different location.
[00:25:52] [SPEAKER_02]: Sure, for sure.
[00:25:53] [SPEAKER_02]: But
[00:25:54] [SPEAKER_04]: What are you saying you weren't actually
[00:25:55] [SPEAKER_04]: at M. Night's house?
[00:25:55] [SPEAKER_04]: Anyway, go ahead.
[00:25:56] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, well that's the point.
[00:25:58] [SPEAKER_02]: I didn't really want to be an actor at this point.
[00:25:59] [SPEAKER_02]: I was like, I don't know.
[00:26:00] [SPEAKER_02]: You want to pay me to miss school?
[00:26:01] [SPEAKER_02]: I'll do it.
[00:26:02] [SPEAKER_02]: Like I at this point also had stopped doing stand up.
[00:26:05] [SPEAKER_02]: Like I had retired at the age of 13.
[00:26:07] [SPEAKER_02]: You know, the Bush era was getting you down.
[00:26:09] [SPEAKER_02]: Is that what it was?
[00:26:10] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I was just in my angsty teenage phase.
[00:26:11] [SPEAKER_02]: I didn't know what I wanted to do and yeah,
[00:26:13] [SPEAKER_02]: I just was like occasionally going on audition
[00:26:15] [SPEAKER_02]: because I was like, well be cool if I got paid
[00:26:17] [SPEAKER_02]: money to miss school.
[00:26:17] [SPEAKER_02]: Like that was my thing.
[00:26:18] [SPEAKER_02]: Sure.
[00:26:19] [SPEAKER_02]: And then a couple years later I was like,
[00:26:20] [SPEAKER_02]: oh I really want to be an actor.
[00:26:21] [SPEAKER_02]: I sort of got the ball.
[00:26:23] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, but where are the concept?
[00:26:24] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, the concept changed everything.
[00:26:25] [SPEAKER_02]: And I had long, long hair.
[00:26:28] [SPEAKER_02]: I looked like a brunette caratop.
[00:26:29] [SPEAKER_02]: Like I thought if I grew my hair
[00:26:31] [SPEAKER_02]: and I didn't get a haircut I would look like Lars Urik
[00:26:33] [SPEAKER_02]: from Metallica.
[00:26:34] [SPEAKER_04]: I've seen pictures, wow, second Metallica reference.
[00:26:36] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:26:36] [SPEAKER_04]: I've seen pictures of you on your Facebook page
[00:26:38] [SPEAKER_04]: as a younger man.
[00:26:39] [SPEAKER_04]: I can picture it.
[00:26:40] [SPEAKER_04]: It was bad.
[00:26:41] [SPEAKER_02]: So I was riding around a bicycle
[00:26:42] [SPEAKER_02]: and then he would be asking these general questions
[00:26:45] [SPEAKER_02]: and then he'd sort of notice me, right?
[00:26:49] [SPEAKER_02]: That I was the kid who wasn't saying anything.
[00:26:52] [SPEAKER_02]: And point me out and ask me questions.
[00:26:55] [SPEAKER_02]: I was originally the Ouija Board kid.
[00:26:56] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh, you were going to be the Ouija Board kid.
[00:26:57] [SPEAKER_02]: I was going to be the Ouija Board kid.
[00:26:59] [SPEAKER_02]: So the following scene of the film is they go to the house.
[00:27:00] [SPEAKER_02]: There's this one kid.
[00:27:01] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, I can't look up who it is.
[00:27:04] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:27:04] [SPEAKER_04]: Some kid.
[00:27:05] [SPEAKER_04]: And I mean like, I just can't get past the premise
[00:27:09] [SPEAKER_04]: that these kids somehow know about this.
[00:27:11] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, everyone.
[00:27:12] [SPEAKER_04]: So it brings out a Ouija Board.
[00:27:13] [SPEAKER_04]: Yes.
[00:27:14] [SPEAKER_04]: And they ask the Ouija Board.
[00:27:16] [SPEAKER_04]: Oh my God.
[00:27:18] [SPEAKER_04]: The bottle just moves.
[00:27:19] [SPEAKER_04]: That Snapple bottle is as if possessed.
[00:27:22] [SPEAKER_04]: What?
[00:27:22] [SPEAKER_04]: No, yeah, they ask the Ouija Board
[00:27:24] [SPEAKER_04]: if the spirit world has been in contact with someone called...
[00:27:28] [SPEAKER_04]: It's like a visual gang.
[00:27:30] [SPEAKER_04]: Also, you know what else is great?
[00:27:32] [SPEAKER_04]: I was doing this thing about a thing no one has ever watched
[00:27:34] [SPEAKER_04]: or ever will watch.
[00:27:35] [SPEAKER_04]: I will say my friend Matt Singer who I don't think
[00:27:37] [SPEAKER_04]: listens to this podcast but he does it.
[00:27:39] [SPEAKER_04]: A film spotting us for you?
[00:27:40] [SPEAKER_04]: Yes, a film spotting us for you.
[00:27:41] [SPEAKER_04]: Great podcast.
[00:27:42] [SPEAKER_04]: He works for Screen Crush.
[00:27:44] [SPEAKER_04]: I always confuse Screen Crush and Screen Rant
[00:27:46] [SPEAKER_04]: even though one is good and one is terrible.
[00:27:48] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:27:48] [SPEAKER_04]: Grant worthy.
[00:27:50] Boy.
[00:27:51] [SPEAKER_04]: He reviewed this film for IFC.com.
[00:27:54] [SPEAKER_02]: Well, I've read that piece.
[00:27:55] [SPEAKER_02]: Yes.
[00:27:56] [SPEAKER_04]: So, you know, it's like, yes.
[00:27:57] [SPEAKER_04]: And it's sort of, you know, retrospective isn't this crazy thing.
[00:27:59] [SPEAKER_04]: So he's seen it.
[00:28:00] [SPEAKER_04]: I don't know if anyone else in the world has ever seen it.
[00:28:01] [SPEAKER_04]: I don't know if anyone else has seen it.
[00:28:02] [SPEAKER_02]: I mean once again it was my first acting job
[00:28:04] [SPEAKER_02]: and I had not seen it until 12 hours ago.
[00:28:06] [SPEAKER_04]: They go and they ask the Ouija Board,
[00:28:09] [SPEAKER_04]: does anyone in the spirit world commune
[00:28:12] [SPEAKER_04]: with like someone called Knight?
[00:28:14] [SPEAKER_04]: No reaction.
[00:28:16] [SPEAKER_04]: The kid's like, well ask his real name.
[00:28:18] [SPEAKER_04]: And the guy's like, oh yeah, his real name,
[00:28:19] [SPEAKER_04]: Manage, okay.
[00:28:20] [SPEAKER_04]: Tries that.
[00:28:21] [SPEAKER_04]: Boom.
[00:28:22] [SPEAKER_04]: Okay, so when I shot the scene...
[00:28:23] [SPEAKER_04]: Oh, so you shot the Ouija Board scene.
[00:28:25] [SPEAKER_04]: I shot it.
[00:28:26] [SPEAKER_04]: I didn't know that was...
[00:28:28] [SPEAKER_04]: Okay, okay, cool.
[00:28:29] [SPEAKER_04]: I shot...
[00:28:29] [SPEAKER_04]: So you did a bad job and they recast you?
[00:28:32] [SPEAKER_04]: I think so.
[00:28:32] [SPEAKER_04]: Did you shoot the chat room shit?
[00:28:34] [SPEAKER_04]: No.
[00:28:35] [SPEAKER_04]: Oh, okay.
[00:28:35] [SPEAKER_04]: So here's the other...
[00:28:35] [SPEAKER_04]: So maybe they just wanted to add the chat room stuff
[00:28:37] [SPEAKER_04]: because that's so great.
[00:28:39] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:28:39] [SPEAKER_01]: So how did they shoot the Ouija Board scene?
[00:28:41] [SPEAKER_04]: Okay, so this is...
[00:28:42] [SPEAKER_02]: Was there a magnet?
[00:28:43] [SPEAKER_02]: This is the insight I can give you here, okay?
[00:28:45] [SPEAKER_02]: When I shot the scene, we go down to the basement,
[00:28:48] [SPEAKER_02]: we were doing the Ouija Board
[00:28:49] [SPEAKER_02]: and then we just fucking did a Ouija Board.
[00:28:51] [SPEAKER_04]: Maybe they thought like, let's spice this up a little bit.
[00:28:54] [SPEAKER_04]: I think that might have been the reason for reshoots.
[00:28:56] [SPEAKER_02]: This is already the most boring thing that ever happened.
[00:28:59] [SPEAKER_02]: Right, because what happens here is they have like a fucking magnet under the table.
[00:29:02] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, and it genuinely moves of its own volition.
[00:29:06] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:29:06] [SPEAKER_05]: Like their hands are up over their heads and the thing moves like...
[00:29:09] [SPEAKER_05]: And then after didn't you guys shoot like something where you did light as a feather
[00:29:12] [SPEAKER_05]: stuff as a board?
[00:29:15] [SPEAKER_02]: Benny!
[00:29:17] [SPEAKER_02]: That's killing it today.
[00:29:18] [SPEAKER_02]: Hey.
[00:29:18] [SPEAKER_02]: That is kicking ass.
[00:29:19] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, okay, so then the kid shows him a website.
[00:29:23] [SPEAKER_02]: He's like, where do you know about this stuff?
[00:29:24] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh my god.
[00:29:25] [SPEAKER_04]: So I mean, and this is...
[00:29:27] [SPEAKER_04]: Who doesn't enjoy an early Aughts films
[00:29:29] [SPEAKER_04]: complete misunderstanding about the internet works?
[00:29:32] [SPEAKER_02]: Okay, so here's great.
[00:29:33] [SPEAKER_04]: Here's the structure of this website.
[00:29:35] [SPEAKER_04]: You have to take a quiz about M Nightmares.
[00:29:36] [SPEAKER_04]: They're very obvious answers.
[00:29:38] [SPEAKER_04]: It's basically like, is he from Philadelphia?
[00:29:40] [SPEAKER_04]: Yes, no.
[00:29:41] [SPEAKER_04]: Like things like that.
[00:29:43] [SPEAKER_04]: What's his favorite number?
[00:29:44] [SPEAKER_04]: You know, it's like six because of the sixth sense.
[00:29:47] [SPEAKER_04]: Oh my god.
[00:29:49] [SPEAKER_04]: So Nathaniel Kahn aces this quiz, right?
[00:29:51] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, he kicks ass.
[00:29:53] [SPEAKER_04]: He gets one wrong and the kid helps him on one quiz.
[00:29:55] [SPEAKER_04]: I can't remember what it is.
[00:29:56] [SPEAKER_04]: Okay, so once he gets...
[00:29:57] [SPEAKER_04]: He finishes the quiz.
[00:29:58] [SPEAKER_04]: And you're in the M Nightmares, right?
[00:30:00] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, sure.
[00:30:01] [SPEAKER_02]: Well that was true to life.
[00:30:02] [SPEAKER_02]: That's what websites were like in 2003.
[00:30:04] [SPEAKER_02]: But that's not main landing page, right?
[00:30:06] [SPEAKER_02]: That's first you go straight to the quiz.
[00:30:08] [SPEAKER_02]: And if you ace the quiz, you get a flash intro.
[00:30:10] [SPEAKER_02]: You can't skip the flash intro, right?
[00:30:13] [SPEAKER_02]: And the intro is a bunch of...
[00:30:14] [SPEAKER_02]: You never could skip a flash intro.
[00:30:15] [SPEAKER_02]: Of course not.
[00:30:16] [SPEAKER_04]: It was the whole thing.
[00:30:17] [SPEAKER_04]: And then you take another quiz and find out which Dave Matty's fans saw you are.
[00:30:24] [SPEAKER_02]: I just want to...
[00:30:25] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh boy.
[00:30:25] [SPEAKER_02]: The flash intro is a bunch of still images of M Night Shyamalan that are just sort of like
[00:30:29] [SPEAKER_02]: sliding over each other.
[00:30:31] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
[00:30:31] [SPEAKER_02]: And then the website then is just a chat room.
[00:30:33] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, there may be other verticals in this website but we don't see them.
[00:30:37] [SPEAKER_04]: We just see a site called Chat.
[00:30:39] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:30:39] [SPEAKER_04]: Only ever two people in the chat room.
[00:30:41] [SPEAKER_04]: One is the director Nathaniel Kahn.
[00:30:44] [SPEAKER_04]: I forgot his name.
[00:30:45] [SPEAKER_04]: And the other is someone with a name and then a number corresponding to how deep their
[00:30:52] [SPEAKER_04]: knowledge of M Night goes.
[00:30:54] [SPEAKER_04]: So...
[00:30:54] [SPEAKER_04]: One to five.
[00:30:55] [SPEAKER_04]: Nathaniel Kahn gets...
[00:30:56] [SPEAKER_04]: Guys, this is the movie.
[00:30:57] [SPEAKER_04]: It was three hours long.
[00:30:59] [SPEAKER_04]: It aired on the Sci-Fi channel.
[00:31:00] [SPEAKER_04]: Three hours with ads.
[00:31:01] [SPEAKER_04]: It's two hours and ten minutes without ads.
[00:31:03] [SPEAKER_04]: And I had to watch this last night.
[00:31:05] [SPEAKER_04]: I want to investigate the logic of this chat room thing for like 45 minutes here,
[00:31:08] [SPEAKER_04]: okay?
[00:31:08] [SPEAKER_04]: It's bonkers.
[00:31:10] [SPEAKER_04]: Does it change your name automatically?
[00:31:11] [SPEAKER_04]: Do you take a better quiz?
[00:31:13] [SPEAKER_04]: It's like he passes that quiz, he gets a one, right?
[00:31:15] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, so do you get a different quiz every time?
[00:31:18] [SPEAKER_05]: Oh, I thought it was like 10,000 hours kind of thing.
[00:31:20] [SPEAKER_05]: Like the more time you log in...
[00:31:22] [SPEAKER_02]: Maybe it's Malcolm Gladwell thing.
[00:31:23] [SPEAKER_02]: That's perfectly fair.
[00:31:24] [SPEAKER_02]: Malcolm Gladwell was the mod in the chat.
[00:31:26] [SPEAKER_02]: They made that clear.
[00:31:26] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, they made that very clear.
[00:31:28] [SPEAKER_02]: He was the mod.
[00:31:28] [SPEAKER_02]: Can I just identify a moment here I love?
[00:31:31] [SPEAKER_02]: Nathaniel Kahn goes, what's the deal with all the numbers?
[00:31:34] [SPEAKER_02]: As if the idea of people having numbers in their usernames is so foreign that
[00:31:38] [SPEAKER_02]: it needs to be called out.
[00:31:39] [SPEAKER_02]: Like everyone has one single digit number between one and five at the end of
[00:31:44] [SPEAKER_02]: their username.
[00:31:45] [SPEAKER_02]: And he's like, oh, you don't know?
[00:31:46] [SPEAKER_02]: And then it's like, yeah, the numbers are relational.
[00:31:48] [SPEAKER_02]: How deep you go?
[00:31:49] [SPEAKER_02]: How much you know about Mnet?
[00:31:50] [SPEAKER_02]: The first time he's on this chat room, guys, this movie.
[00:31:53] [SPEAKER_02]: It also sounds like Scientology levels.
[00:31:54] [SPEAKER_02]: Like it's like the level seven.
[00:31:56] [SPEAKER_04]: I know you guys think we're going to just talk about this movie for so long,
[00:32:00] [SPEAKER_04]: but really like there's like three things that happen that are funny and
[00:32:03] [SPEAKER_04]: then that's kind of it.
[00:32:03] [SPEAKER_04]: It's like one idea and then they just kind of spin their wheels for like an hour and a half.
[00:32:08] [SPEAKER_02]: Well the last 60% of the movie is the filmmaker deciding whether or not to release the film.
[00:32:13] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, and whether or not to like ask Knight one last question.
[00:32:15] [SPEAKER_04]: Like whether or not he should show this footage to anyone.
[00:32:17] [SPEAKER_04]: Okay, so he talks to a five, a level five on this chat room.
[00:32:21] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:32:21] [SPEAKER_04]: This guy can sense what he's wearing.
[00:32:23] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:32:24] [SPEAKER_04]: Where he is.
[00:32:25] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:32:26] [SPEAKER_04]: It's intense stuff.
[00:32:27] [SPEAKER_02]: Okay.
[00:32:28] [SPEAKER_02]: So Conn is going deep, right?
[00:32:30] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:32:31] [SPEAKER_02]: He's falling down the rabbit hole.
[00:32:33] [SPEAKER_02]: Mm-hmm.
[00:32:34] [SPEAKER_02]: He's back in his hotel room with his crew.
[00:32:37] [SPEAKER_04]: This is the one, I mean, what can you say about this scene?
[00:32:41] [SPEAKER_04]: It's like cinema, right?
[00:32:43] [SPEAKER_04]: You know?
[00:32:43] [SPEAKER_04]: You've got like Mernot.
[00:32:45] [SPEAKER_04]: You've got Griffith.
[00:32:46] [SPEAKER_04]: You've got the studio era, you know?
[00:32:48] [SPEAKER_04]: You've got the French New Wave.
[00:32:50] [SPEAKER_04]: You've got it all and then Javier the pizza delivery guy shows up in this movie and cinema closes the book and starts a new one because he says, oh, and I also know, text stuff.
[00:33:02] [SPEAKER_04]: And the idea, the idea, it is outrageous.
[00:33:08] [SPEAKER_04]: He has two pizza boxes under his arm.
[00:33:10] [SPEAKER_04]: This is obviously a guy they would just like, they handed him two empty boxes and they were like, you're a pizza guy.
[00:33:16] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:33:16] [SPEAKER_04]: And he's like, can I use my name?
[00:33:17] [SPEAKER_04]: And like, yeah, sure.
[00:33:18] [SPEAKER_04]: He's like, great, I'm the pizza guy.
[00:33:21] [SPEAKER_04]: They're like, oh, but you need to know how to use a chat room.
[00:33:23] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:33:23] [SPEAKER_02]: And action.
[00:33:24] [SPEAKER_02]: And the idea, I guess, is that Javier will be able to figure out how they were able to know what Nessanio Conn was wearing.
[00:33:33] [SPEAKER_04]: He then goes on the chat room and asks what someone's wearing and the guy's like, this is not that kind of sight buddy.
[00:33:38] [SPEAKER_04]: You know, it's like a sex joke.
[00:33:39] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, they neg him.
[00:33:40] [SPEAKER_02]: Anyway, I don't know, there's nothing to say about this scene.
[00:33:43] [SPEAKER_02]: Can I say something else?
[00:33:44] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:33:44] [SPEAKER_02]: So there are...
[00:33:45] [SPEAKER_02]: Or this movie.
[00:33:46] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:33:46] [SPEAKER_02]: There were moments in this film where you are clearly watching interviews with people off the street who don't know that they're an
[00:33:55] [SPEAKER_02]: fictional documentary.
[00:33:56] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:33:56] [SPEAKER_02]: And I think they're just being asked...
[00:33:58] [SPEAKER_02]: Hold on a second.
[00:33:59] [SPEAKER_02]: Did you order a pizza, David?
[00:34:00] [SPEAKER_04]: Oh, hey, who's this?
[00:34:02] [SPEAKER_05]: What's up, man?
[00:34:04] [SPEAKER_05]: You guys got a pizza?
[00:34:06] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I can't hear you.
[00:34:07] [SPEAKER_02]: You're not on mic.
[00:34:07] [SPEAKER_02]: What's going on?
[00:34:09] [SPEAKER_05]: Hey, are those two pizza boxes under your arm?
[00:34:11] [SPEAKER_02]: What are you guys making?
[00:34:12] [SPEAKER_02]: A radio show?
[00:34:13] [SPEAKER_02]: We're doing a podcast.
[00:34:14] [SPEAKER_02]: You wouldn't know anything about that, right?
[00:34:15] [SPEAKER_05]: No, I don't know anything about podcasts.
[00:34:17] [SPEAKER_05]: Oh really?
[00:34:18] [SPEAKER_02]: I thought maybe...
[00:34:19] [SPEAKER_02]: That's not going with the bit.
[00:34:20] [SPEAKER_02]: I thought maybe you do some podcasts on the side.
[00:34:23] [SPEAKER_05]: Oh.
[00:34:25] [SPEAKER_05]: Oh, podcasts.
[00:34:26] [SPEAKER_04]: No one gets this.
[00:34:27] [SPEAKER_04]: No one saw this stupid movie.
[00:34:30] [SPEAKER_04]: So let's just wrap.
[00:34:32] [SPEAKER_04]: I'm just gonna wrap up the main point of this.
[00:34:33] [SPEAKER_04]: I don't want to drag it out like this thing does.
[00:34:35] [SPEAKER_02]: Okay.
[00:34:36] [SPEAKER_04]: And I want to say, so it's clear that this thing wants to include all three major Shyamalan
[00:34:42] [SPEAKER_04]: movies as part of some sort of interconnected mythology behind the director.
[00:34:46] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh, I just want to say this before we get into this.
[00:34:48] [SPEAKER_02]: This was the Javier point, right?
[00:34:51] [SPEAKER_02]: Is that like Javier...
[00:34:52] [SPEAKER_02]: There are points in the film where he's like walking around the streets of Philadelphia
[00:34:55] [SPEAKER_02]: and like asking people on the street about Nite Shyamalan.
[00:34:57] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh, right, they're doing like a Vox Pop.
[00:34:59] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, yeah.
[00:34:59] [SPEAKER_02]: Right, and you sense like, oh right, this is what like a real documentary looks like.
[00:35:03] [SPEAKER_02]: Sure.
[00:35:03] [SPEAKER_02]: This is how like real people talk when they're not acting.
[00:35:06] [SPEAKER_02]: And then Javier comes in and he's like out of like a fucking like Mama's Family episode.
[00:35:11] [SPEAKER_04]: You know?
[00:35:11] [SPEAKER_04]: It's true.
[00:35:12] [SPEAKER_04]: He's like, oh yeah, he's good, he makes movies, they're in Philadelphia I guess.
[00:35:17] [SPEAKER_04]: Like they have nothing to say.
[00:35:18] [SPEAKER_02]: Like on one hand the performances are not even like really anywhere within the realm of realism.
[00:35:23] [SPEAKER_02]: No.
[00:35:24] [SPEAKER_02]: Like they're so heightened.
[00:35:25] [SPEAKER_02]: The fact that they actually thought they would be able to televise this and have
[00:35:28] [SPEAKER_02]: people believe that it was a real thing.
[00:35:29] [SPEAKER_02]: Two is the structure of the film, how it's shot, which things are on camera.
[00:35:33] [SPEAKER_02]: I mean we talked about this.
[00:35:34] [SPEAKER_04]: Every room is like lit for cinema.
[00:35:37] [SPEAKER_04]: It makes no sense at all.
[00:35:38] [SPEAKER_05]: Wait, wait, the piece of guy's coming.
[00:35:39] [SPEAKER_05]: The piece of guy's coming.
[00:35:40] [SPEAKER_05]: Put the little cameras on.
[00:35:41] [SPEAKER_02]: And also have you-
[00:35:43] [SPEAKER_02]: Who's that?
[00:35:43] [SPEAKER_02]: Camera?
[00:35:43] [SPEAKER_02]: You guys making a movie?
[00:35:44] [SPEAKER_02]: Have you ever seen a documentary that is more than half about-
[00:35:50] [SPEAKER_02]: About the making of the documentary?
[00:35:51] [SPEAKER_02]: No, beyond that, more than half about whether or not anyone will ever see the
[00:35:55] [SPEAKER_02]: documentary.
[00:35:56] [SPEAKER_02]: Like the filmmakers watching the scenes they just shot and being like,
[00:35:59] [SPEAKER_02]: I don't know, should we show this to people?
[00:36:01] [SPEAKER_04]: The documentary should begin with this.
[00:36:03] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:36:03] [SPEAKER_04]: M. Night Shyamalan, you've heard of him, director, right?
[00:36:06] [SPEAKER_04]: One minute montage of M. Night Shyamalan's work.
[00:36:08] [SPEAKER_04]: When he was 10 years old, he fell into a fucking ice pond and was dead for 35
[00:36:13] [SPEAKER_04]: minutes and then they revived him.
[00:36:15] [SPEAKER_04]: And that gave him the ability to commune with the dead.
[00:36:17] [SPEAKER_04]: Here, we're gonna lay out why this is true.
[00:36:20] [SPEAKER_04]: Right, it should have been like-
[00:36:26] [SPEAKER_04]: It's gonna be over the course of three hours.
[00:36:27] [SPEAKER_04]: You're saying the more interesting version of this, if you were gonna make this
[00:36:30] [SPEAKER_04]: wrong-
[00:36:30] [SPEAKER_04]: This documentary making a very specific and very inflammatory argument about
[00:36:35] [SPEAKER_04]: somebody, like you would probably lead with that and then try to back up your
[00:36:39] [SPEAKER_04]: evidence.
[00:36:40] [SPEAKER_04]: So do it as loose change.
[00:36:41] [SPEAKER_04]: Do it as loose change, man.
[00:36:43] [SPEAKER_04]: Loose change and night.
[00:36:43] [SPEAKER_04]: Right, that's what we have to do.
[00:36:44] [SPEAKER_02]: It has to be like a conspiracy theory documentary.
[00:36:47] [SPEAKER_02]: Right, exactly.
[00:36:48] [SPEAKER_02]: And just, yeah, whatever.
[00:36:50] [SPEAKER_04]: Instead, it's basically Nathaniel Kahn-
[00:36:53] [SPEAKER_04]: Watching him trying to solve a mystery.
[00:36:54] [SPEAKER_04]: Who has been paid to make a shill-like documentary.
[00:36:59] [SPEAKER_04]: Stumbles very slowly into, after talking to some teenagers and going on a chat room
[00:37:04] [SPEAKER_04]: into this mysterious myth about M. Night, which is that he died for 35 minutes
[00:37:11] [SPEAKER_04]: when he was 10 years old.
[00:37:12] [SPEAKER_04]: Look at the films, David.
[00:37:13] [SPEAKER_04]: Look at the past films.
[00:37:15] [SPEAKER_02]: Well, even his childhood films.
[00:37:17] [SPEAKER_02]: His childhood films.
[00:37:18] [SPEAKER_02]: There's a part of the film where he goes to M. Night's like childhood
[00:37:20] [SPEAKER_02]: neighborhood, right?
[00:37:21] [SPEAKER_02]: And he's like, did M. Night use to live here?
[00:37:23] [SPEAKER_02]: And they're like, I'm not gonna talk about that.
[00:37:24] [SPEAKER_02]: Like it's like everyone's in one.
[00:37:26] [SPEAKER_02]: It's a conspiracy, everyone else knows.
[00:37:28] [SPEAKER_04]: Some people are like, no I can't talk to you about that
[00:37:29] [SPEAKER_04]: and they turn pale and they won't talk anymore.
[00:37:31] [SPEAKER_04]: Other people are like, well let me tell you something about him.
[00:37:33] [SPEAKER_04]: He fell into an ice pond for 35 minutes.
[00:37:35] [SPEAKER_04]: You know, it's like we-
[00:37:37] [SPEAKER_04]: Alright, there's so much to say.
[00:37:38] [SPEAKER_02]: There's an old lady who's like, oh I remember M. Night used to make films.
[00:37:41] [SPEAKER_02]: I have his movies.
[00:37:42] [SPEAKER_02]: It's like what?
[00:37:42] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I have like 20 VHS tapes.
[00:37:45] [SPEAKER_02]: What was your relation to him?
[00:37:46] [SPEAKER_02]: Sometimes he made films on my-
[00:37:48] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:37:49] [SPEAKER_02]: One time he filmed in my front yard as a location.
[00:37:52] [SPEAKER_02]: And she watches them and she breaks them down.
[00:37:54] [SPEAKER_02]: She's like, look at that, the use of light there.
[00:37:56] [SPEAKER_02]: You can see the character starting a new chapter.
[00:37:58] [SPEAKER_02]: Like there is a point where she says like the light comes in
[00:38:00] [SPEAKER_02]: and now everything's changing.
[00:38:01] [SPEAKER_04]: I know.
[00:38:02] [SPEAKER_04]: And like they're authorized-
[00:38:03] [SPEAKER_04]: Every interview has authorized or not authorized
[00:38:06] [SPEAKER_04]: underneath it in a subtitle.
[00:38:08] [SPEAKER_04]: Some of the authorized people basically say like,
[00:38:10] [SPEAKER_04]: yeah I mean he was nice, normal kid,
[00:38:12] [SPEAKER_04]: he made movies and then,
[00:38:13] [SPEAKER_04]: oh, I guess I shouldn't talk about this.
[00:38:16] [SPEAKER_04]: As if they're just realizing that,
[00:38:18] [SPEAKER_04]: like even though M. Night apparently authorized them
[00:38:20] [SPEAKER_04]: to speak to them.
[00:38:20] [SPEAKER_02]: It doesn't make any sense.
[00:38:22] [SPEAKER_02]: Here's another thing that happens at least-
[00:38:24] [SPEAKER_04]: I know you haven't seen this movie
[00:38:25] [SPEAKER_04]: and I'm sorry I'm nitpicking at it.
[00:38:26] [SPEAKER_02]: Here's another thing that happens
[00:38:27] [SPEAKER_02]: at least three times in the movie.
[00:38:30] [SPEAKER_02]: People reference how handsome M. Night Shyamalan is.
[00:38:32] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh, now he's kind of handsome.
[00:38:35] [SPEAKER_04]: He's not a bad looking guy.
[00:38:36] [SPEAKER_04]: He's a decent looking guy.
[00:38:37] [SPEAKER_02]: But they do talk about it a lot.
[00:38:39] [SPEAKER_02]: So they go to a childhood teacher.
[00:38:41] [SPEAKER_02]: Childhood teacher, yeah.
[00:38:42] [SPEAKER_02]: Right?
[00:38:42] [SPEAKER_02]: And they go like, I remember him so vividly,
[00:38:44] [SPEAKER_02]: he was so smart, he had stunning eyes.
[00:38:47] [SPEAKER_02]: Like if she like hits on like his eyes
[00:38:49] [SPEAKER_02]: we're just so beautiful, right?
[00:38:51] [SPEAKER_02]: There's another point where they say
[00:38:52] [SPEAKER_02]: he was such a handsome man.
[00:38:54] [SPEAKER_02]: There's a point where they talk to a fake childhood friend of his
[00:38:57] [SPEAKER_02]: and they're like, so what's M. Night to you?
[00:38:59] [SPEAKER_02]: And it's like, what's M. Night to me?
[00:39:00] [SPEAKER_02]: When I think of M. Night,
[00:39:02] [SPEAKER_02]: I think about the guy who always stole my girlfriends.
[00:39:04] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:39:04] [SPEAKER_02]: And I was like really?
[00:39:05] [SPEAKER_02]: And it's like, nah, I mean just want.
[00:39:07] [SPEAKER_02]: Just one.
[00:39:08] [SPEAKER_02]: But they keep on hitting this point
[00:39:09] [SPEAKER_02]: that M. Night's like this lady killer.
[00:39:10] [SPEAKER_04]: And it turns out that was L. McPherson.
[00:39:11] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:39:12] [SPEAKER_04]: Sorry, go ahead.
[00:39:12] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
[00:39:13] [SPEAKER_04]: They keep talking about how he's a lady killer.
[00:39:15] [SPEAKER_02]: They keep on talking about how he's
[00:39:19] [SPEAKER_02]: so innately attracted to it, right?
[00:39:21] [SPEAKER_02]: And how he always had this thing.
[00:39:22] [SPEAKER_02]: Now they go to the teacher
[00:39:23] [SPEAKER_02]: and they're like, you know, he was very smart.
[00:39:26] [SPEAKER_02]: Stunning eyes, he had a great dick.
[00:39:28] [SPEAKER_02]: He was beautiful.
[00:39:30] [SPEAKER_02]: And his Catholic school, that is accurate.
[00:39:31] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:39:32] [SPEAKER_02]: I mean, I don't know if it's his,
[00:39:32] [SPEAKER_02]: but he's at least a nun.
[00:39:34] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:39:34] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:39:35] [SPEAKER_02]: And she's like,
[00:39:37] [SPEAKER_02]: de-socialize with other people.
[00:39:38] [SPEAKER_02]: It's like, well there was one boy
[00:39:39] [SPEAKER_02]: he was very interested in.
[00:39:41] [SPEAKER_02]: He used to draw him a lot.
[00:39:42] [SPEAKER_02]: His name was Hanover.
[00:39:43] [SPEAKER_03]: Right.
[00:39:44] [SPEAKER_04]: And now it's immediately obvious to everyone
[00:39:46] [SPEAKER_04]: but filmmaker Nathaniel Cron
[00:39:48] [SPEAKER_04]: that she is talking about an imaginary friend.
[00:39:51] [SPEAKER_04]: And then she digs up a picture
[00:39:53] [SPEAKER_04]: of a boy in period clothing.
[00:39:56] [SPEAKER_04]: She has kept a drawing.
[00:39:57] [SPEAKER_04]: He goes, she goes, you wanna see it?
[00:39:59] [SPEAKER_04]: I would keep this drawing.
[00:39:59] [SPEAKER_04]: It's a fucked up drawing.
[00:40:00] [SPEAKER_04]: It's the funniest drawing ever.
[00:40:02] [SPEAKER_04]: It's a boy in period clothing.
[00:40:03] [SPEAKER_04]: He's got like little suspenders.
[00:40:05] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:40:05] [SPEAKER_04]: Who's, one of his eyes looks like
[00:40:07] [SPEAKER_04]: it's been punched repeatedly or something.
[00:40:08] [SPEAKER_04]: Like it's looking in the wrong direction
[00:40:10] [SPEAKER_04]: because it's a corpse.
[00:40:11] [SPEAKER_04]: He's got a Marty Feldman eye.
[00:40:13] [SPEAKER_04]: But when I straight forward.
[00:40:14] [SPEAKER_04]: He's got a Marty Feldman eye.
[00:40:15] [SPEAKER_04]: That's exactly right.
[00:40:15] [SPEAKER_04]: And the other eye is like drooping.
[00:40:17] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:40:17] [SPEAKER_04]: And looking in the wrong direction.
[00:40:19] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:40:19] [SPEAKER_04]: Now, so basically the theory of this movie
[00:40:22] [SPEAKER_04]: is one, the sixth sense.
[00:40:24] [SPEAKER_04]: M. Knight can see the debt.
[00:40:26] [SPEAKER_04]: Two, unbreakable.
[00:40:28] [SPEAKER_04]: He got this power when he drowned.
[00:40:30] [SPEAKER_04]: Like through water.
[00:40:31] [SPEAKER_04]: And three, signs.
[00:40:33] [SPEAKER_04]: He lived at the sign's house when this happened.
[00:40:36] [SPEAKER_04]: The sign's one is the toughest one
[00:40:38] [SPEAKER_04]: to connect because it's about aliens.
[00:40:41] [SPEAKER_04]: Oh I should have seen this scene
[00:40:42] [SPEAKER_04]: where Nathaniel Cron just watches
[00:40:44] [SPEAKER_04]: the movie's signs.
[00:40:45] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:40:45] [SPEAKER_04]: And says how good it is.
[00:40:48] [SPEAKER_04]: He's like this is great.
[00:40:49] [SPEAKER_04]: You don't see the alien for like an hour.
[00:40:51] [SPEAKER_02]: Like that's filmmaking.
[00:40:52] [SPEAKER_02]: That's really good filmmaking.
[00:40:53] [SPEAKER_04]: So it's like one talks to the debt.
[00:40:55] [SPEAKER_04]: That's the real thing that's the sixth sense.
[00:40:56] [SPEAKER_04]: And the poster of this movie
[00:40:57] [SPEAKER_04]: looked like the sixth sense except it was.
[00:40:59] [SPEAKER_04]: M. Knight coming out of the thing.
[00:41:02] [SPEAKER_04]: And instead of a six I believe it's
[00:41:04] [SPEAKER_04]: an S shape in the background.
[00:41:06] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:41:06] [SPEAKER_04]: Because it's a secret.
[00:41:07] [SPEAKER_04]: And then unbreakable is just the water thing.
[00:41:10] [SPEAKER_04]: Unbreakable.
[00:41:11] [SPEAKER_04]: Unbreakable you're gonna, yeah.
[00:41:12] [SPEAKER_04]: You got that right?
[00:41:13] [SPEAKER_04]: Drop it in.
[00:41:13] [SPEAKER_04]: You're gonna drop it in?
[00:41:13] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:41:15] [SPEAKER_04]: Unbreakable.
[00:41:15] [SPEAKER_04]: It's back on April 13th.
[00:41:17] [SPEAKER_04]: Hey now.
[00:41:17] [SPEAKER_04]: Great show.
[00:41:18] [SPEAKER_04]: I've been watching it season two.
[00:41:19] [SPEAKER_04]: It's still good.
[00:41:21] [SPEAKER_04]: So we fell in the water but for 35 minutes
[00:41:24] [SPEAKER_04]: and we talked to a doctor who says that
[00:41:25] [SPEAKER_04]: that is possible because hypothermia preserves
[00:41:28] [SPEAKER_04]: the body of the book.
[00:41:30] [SPEAKER_04]: But he was dead.
[00:41:31] [SPEAKER_04]: Right.
[00:41:32] [SPEAKER_04]: And then signs, yeah, it was the signs out.
[00:41:34] [SPEAKER_02]: And there's one point where he's like
[00:41:35] [SPEAKER_02]: reviewing all the footage from all the films
[00:41:36] [SPEAKER_02]: and trying to connect the dots
[00:41:37] [SPEAKER_02]: and they go like they play.
[00:41:39] [SPEAKER_04]: They show a lot of clips from the films.
[00:41:41] [SPEAKER_02]: So they play the sixth sense.
[00:41:42] [SPEAKER_02]: He'll just go like, hello Jalazmin,
[00:41:43] [SPEAKER_02]: talk about seeing dead people.
[00:41:44] [SPEAKER_02]: And he goes to the sixth sense church at one point.
[00:41:47] [SPEAKER_02]: Then they play the clip from Unbreakable
[00:41:49] [SPEAKER_02]: of Bruce Willis falling into the tarp.
[00:41:51] [SPEAKER_02]: With the voiceover of the lady being like,
[00:41:53] [SPEAKER_02]: oh, that he was dead in the water.
[00:41:55] [SPEAKER_02]: And then I'm like what clip are they
[00:41:57] [SPEAKER_02]: gonna play from signs?
[00:41:58] [SPEAKER_02]: What clip will sum it up so quickly
[00:42:00] [SPEAKER_02]: that you can get it in shorthand?
[00:42:02] [SPEAKER_02]: And the clip they show is
[00:42:03] [SPEAKER_02]: walking Phoenix knocking over a glass of water
[00:42:06] [SPEAKER_02]: with his baseball bat.
[00:42:07] [SPEAKER_02]: They just have him go, water.
[00:42:09] [SPEAKER_02]: It hurts them.
[00:42:10] [SPEAKER_04]: Oh my god.
[00:42:11] [SPEAKER_04]: But yeah, and then there's this ultimate.
[00:42:13] [SPEAKER_04]: I think it's the movie considers it a twist
[00:42:15] [SPEAKER_04]: that like the sign's house is real
[00:42:16] [SPEAKER_04]: and M. Night went like he grew up there
[00:42:19] [SPEAKER_04]: and there's a crow living in it.
[00:42:21] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, oh that's another thing.
[00:42:22] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, he can summon crows with his like
[00:42:24] [SPEAKER_02]: mind powers maybe?
[00:42:25] [SPEAKER_02]: So for an unauthorized documentary
[00:42:27] [SPEAKER_02]: M. Night does a bunch of interviews.
[00:42:29] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, okay.
[00:42:29] [SPEAKER_02]: So this is the thing.
[00:42:30] [SPEAKER_02]: That's the main dramatic conflict
[00:42:31] [SPEAKER_02]: of the movie is can we get an M. Night interview.
[00:42:34] [SPEAKER_04]: They only get him four times.
[00:42:38] [SPEAKER_04]: So he meets with him on camera
[00:42:40] [SPEAKER_04]: but they don't do an interview.
[00:42:41] [SPEAKER_04]: But David, he just wants to hang out.
[00:42:42] [SPEAKER_04]: Well this is the thing.
[00:42:43] [SPEAKER_04]: Okay, he wants to go out on the town.
[00:42:45] [SPEAKER_04]: Have a cheese stick.
[00:42:46] [SPEAKER_04]: Be a guy.
[00:42:47] [SPEAKER_04]: The first interview is not an interview
[00:42:49] [SPEAKER_04]: they just meet briefly.
[00:42:50] [SPEAKER_04]: They shake hands.
[00:42:51] [SPEAKER_04]: The second interview is supposed to be
[00:42:52] [SPEAKER_04]: like a regular interview.
[00:42:54] [SPEAKER_04]: They talks about a Sanskrit necklace.
[00:42:56] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:42:56] [SPEAKER_04]: And then Conn asks some question.
[00:42:59] [SPEAKER_04]: Conn asks some question about like
[00:43:01] [SPEAKER_04]: oh the spirit world.
[00:43:05] [SPEAKER_04]: And M. Night gets like really agitated
[00:43:07] [SPEAKER_04]: and shuts off the interview.
[00:43:08] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:43:08] [SPEAKER_04]: Right?
[00:43:09] [SPEAKER_04]: The third interview.
[00:43:09] [SPEAKER_04]: And the PR woman chooses me as out.
[00:43:11] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, so how can you,
[00:43:12] [SPEAKER_04]: what are you asking about that?
[00:43:13] [SPEAKER_04]: I don't understand what he's supposed
[00:43:14] [SPEAKER_04]: to be asking them about.
[00:43:16] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:43:16] [SPEAKER_04]: Anyway, the third thing is they go out
[00:43:18] [SPEAKER_04]: for a night on the town in Philly.
[00:43:20] [SPEAKER_04]: They get a cheese steak
[00:43:21] [SPEAKER_04]: and then they play some pool.
[00:43:23] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:43:23] [SPEAKER_04]: And some people want to take pictures
[00:43:25] [SPEAKER_04]: with M. Night.
[00:43:26] [SPEAKER_04]: Oh people are always stopping M. Night.
[00:43:29] [SPEAKER_05]: Oh yeah.
[00:43:29] [SPEAKER_05]: Always want a picture.
[00:43:31] [SPEAKER_02]: So handsome.
[00:43:31] [SPEAKER_02]: Want a little autograph.
[00:43:33] [SPEAKER_02]: And they're talking about too like
[00:43:35] [SPEAKER_02]: they're like hanging out in the back
[00:43:36] [SPEAKER_02]: of this car.
[00:43:37] [SPEAKER_02]: They're going around to M. Night's
[00:43:38] [SPEAKER_02]: favorite haunts.
[00:43:39] [SPEAKER_02]: But the whole crew is there.
[00:43:41] [SPEAKER_02]: And he keeps on going like see this
[00:43:42] [SPEAKER_02]: is what I want man.
[00:43:43] [SPEAKER_02]: You know just like hanging out
[00:43:44] [SPEAKER_02]: like this.
[00:43:45] [SPEAKER_02]: Sure.
[00:43:45] [SPEAKER_02]: And then Conn's like yeah I love it.
[00:43:46] [SPEAKER_02]: And every once in a while
[00:43:47] [SPEAKER_02]: Conn will be like so in sixth sense
[00:43:49] [SPEAKER_02]: and he's like man.
[00:43:50] [SPEAKER_02]: I thought we were just hanging out.
[00:43:51] [SPEAKER_02]: Starting to sound like an interview.
[00:43:52] [SPEAKER_02]: It's like you thought they were
[00:43:53] [SPEAKER_02]: just hanging out the fucking crews
[00:43:54] [SPEAKER_02]: there.
[00:43:56] [SPEAKER_02]: He brought a camera.
[00:43:57] [SPEAKER_02]: They miked you up.
[00:43:58] [SPEAKER_02]: You got a love.
[00:43:59] [SPEAKER_02]: What are you talking about?
[00:43:59] [SPEAKER_04]: No, I don't understand the purpose
[00:44:01] [SPEAKER_04]: of this sequence at all.
[00:44:02] [SPEAKER_04]: It's quite a long sequence in the
[00:44:03] [SPEAKER_04]: film.
[00:44:03] [SPEAKER_04]: It's like 15 minutes long.
[00:44:05] [SPEAKER_02]: It almost feels like M. Night
[00:44:06] [SPEAKER_04]: makes him look like a pretty nice
[00:44:07] [SPEAKER_04]: normal guy who is not hiding
[00:44:09] [SPEAKER_02]: anything at all.
[00:44:10] [SPEAKER_02]: Okay so I think that was the point
[00:44:11] [SPEAKER_02]: of the sequence in the film.
[00:44:12] [SPEAKER_02]: Okay.
[00:44:13] [SPEAKER_02]: I think M. Night wanted to convince
[00:44:14] [SPEAKER_02]: people.
[00:44:14] [SPEAKER_04]: I want to just be like a creep.
[00:44:16] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:44:16] [SPEAKER_02]: I think M. Night wanted to convince
[00:44:17] [SPEAKER_02]: people that he was a fun hang.
[00:44:19] [SPEAKER_02]: I think that's why this exists
[00:44:20] [SPEAKER_02]: in the movie is he was just
[00:44:21] [SPEAKER_02]: like I mean I want people still
[00:44:23] [SPEAKER_02]: hanging out with me.
[00:44:24] [SPEAKER_02]: I want to cultivate this
[00:44:25] [SPEAKER_02]: like mythology and this creepy
[00:44:26] [SPEAKER_02]: thing but I also want people
[00:44:27] [SPEAKER_02]: to know I'm just like you
[00:44:28] [SPEAKER_02]: know I fully cheesesteak just
[00:44:30] [SPEAKER_02]: like everyone else.
[00:44:31] [SPEAKER_02]: I just hold the onions.
[00:44:33] [SPEAKER_02]: I would too.
[00:44:34] [SPEAKER_02]: Which is something that's
[00:44:34] [SPEAKER_02]: insane.
[00:44:35] [SPEAKER_04]: David that's insane.
[00:44:36] [SPEAKER_04]: Holding the onions?
[00:44:38] [SPEAKER_04]: I don't like I like onions but
[00:44:39] [SPEAKER_04]: I don't need that many onions.
[00:44:40] [SPEAKER_04]: It makes a fully cheesesteak.
[00:44:41] [SPEAKER_04]: I'm not a huge fan of a
[00:44:42] [SPEAKER_04]: fully cheesesteak.
[00:44:43] [SPEAKER_04]: I'm going to be I'm going to
[00:44:43] [SPEAKER_04]: level with everyone on this
[00:44:44] [SPEAKER_04]: podcast.
[00:44:46] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:44:46] [SPEAKER_04]: I feel that out.
[00:44:47] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah let's cut that out.
[00:44:48] [SPEAKER_04]: That's inflammatory.
[00:44:48] [SPEAKER_02]: I think it's okay.
[00:44:49] [SPEAKER_02]: I just.
[00:44:51] [SPEAKER_02]: I don't know.
[00:44:51] [SPEAKER_02]: I think it's one of the best.
[00:44:54] [SPEAKER_05]: Love is good cheesesteak.
[00:44:56] [SPEAKER_02]: So good.
[00:44:57] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm a regular M. Night
[00:44:58] [SPEAKER_02]: Shyamalan.
[00:45:00] [SPEAKER_02]: So he's like a fun hang.
[00:45:02] [SPEAKER_02]: They do this one interview
[00:45:03] [SPEAKER_02]: out in the woods where a crow
[00:45:04] [SPEAKER_02]: just appears and lands on the
[00:45:05] [SPEAKER_02]: branch behind him while they're
[00:45:06] [SPEAKER_02]: talking.
[00:45:07] [SPEAKER_02]: And then later when they review
[00:45:08] [SPEAKER_02]: the footage they realize there's
[00:45:09] [SPEAKER_02]: also a different crow behind
[00:45:11] [SPEAKER_02]: Nathaniel Kahn.
[00:45:12] [SPEAKER_02]: Uh huh.
[00:45:14] [SPEAKER_02]: When they go to the house
[00:45:16] [SPEAKER_02]: crows like fly out of the
[00:45:17] [SPEAKER_04]: one crow.
[00:45:18] [SPEAKER_04]: One crow flies out of one room.
[00:45:20] [SPEAKER_04]: Very dramatically.
[00:45:21] [SPEAKER_02]: Well for this movie very
[00:45:23] [SPEAKER_02]: dramatically for another movie
[00:45:24] [SPEAKER_02]: barely dramatically.
[00:45:25] [SPEAKER_02]: And then when they review
[00:45:26] [SPEAKER_02]: the footage they realize they
[00:45:27] [SPEAKER_02]: see Henry's ghost in the
[00:45:29] [SPEAKER_02]: mirror.
[00:45:30] [SPEAKER_02]: Yes in that scene.
[00:45:31] [SPEAKER_04]: The crow very obvious like a
[00:45:33] [SPEAKER_04]: full resolution like in it.
[00:45:35] [SPEAKER_04]: Not in a shadowy thing at all.
[00:45:37] [SPEAKER_04]: Henry is the Victorian ghost
[00:45:39] [SPEAKER_04]: boy who was ghost murdered in
[00:45:41] [SPEAKER_04]: the ghost pass in the ghost pond
[00:45:43] [SPEAKER_04]: that M. Night Shyamalan later fell
[00:45:45] [SPEAKER_04]: into rescue a deer from by the way
[00:45:46] [SPEAKER_04]: M. Night Shyamalan friend to
[00:45:47] [SPEAKER_04]: dears.
[00:45:49] [SPEAKER_04]: Friend to deer sorry.
[00:45:50] [SPEAKER_04]: Friend to deer.
[00:45:50] [SPEAKER_04]: He was trying to rescue a
[00:45:52] [SPEAKER_04]: deer as a child.
[00:45:53] [SPEAKER_04]: Fell in ice pond ghosts, ghost
[00:45:54] [SPEAKER_04]: Henry.
[00:45:55] [SPEAKER_04]: It communes with the ghost.
[00:45:56] [SPEAKER_04]: This movie is fucking stupid.
[00:45:58] [SPEAKER_04]: And so then it's got that
[00:45:59] [SPEAKER_04]: and there's like two more
[00:46:00] [SPEAKER_04]: interviews with M. Night
[00:46:00] [SPEAKER_04]: and I guess the last one is like
[00:46:02] [SPEAKER_04]: where they where the guys just
[00:46:03] [SPEAKER_04]: like so you fell in the ghost
[00:46:05] [SPEAKER_04]: pond ghost you've talked to
[00:46:06] [SPEAKER_04]: ghosts.
[00:46:06] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:46:07] [SPEAKER_04]: And M. Night's like no man I
[00:46:08] [SPEAKER_04]: don't know I gotta go like
[00:46:10] [SPEAKER_04]: you know and then that's it.
[00:46:11] [SPEAKER_04]: And then it's an hour of him
[00:46:12] [SPEAKER_04]: trying to decide whether
[00:46:13] [SPEAKER_04]: or not to release the damn
[00:46:14] [SPEAKER_04]: thing.
[00:46:14] [SPEAKER_05]: We left out the most important
[00:46:16] [SPEAKER_05]: part.
[00:46:16] [SPEAKER_04]: Oh we're getting to that.
[00:46:18] [SPEAKER_04]: We're getting to the most
[00:46:19] [SPEAKER_04]: important part.
[00:46:20] [SPEAKER_04]: Don't you worry.
[00:46:20] [SPEAKER_04]: I just let that's the kicker.
[00:46:22] [SPEAKER_04]: Sure.
[00:46:23] [SPEAKER_04]: That's about should we get
[00:46:23] [SPEAKER_04]: to so first we should say
[00:46:25] [SPEAKER_02]: the film ends with him signing
[00:46:26] [SPEAKER_02]: a contract with sci-fi channel
[00:46:28] [SPEAKER_02]: to air the film as is.
[00:46:29] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:46:30] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm discussing whether or not
[00:46:31] [SPEAKER_02]: they'll have any legal repercussions
[00:46:32] [SPEAKER_02]: and watching them in the editing
[00:46:34] [SPEAKER_02]: room going like I think I need
[00:46:35] [SPEAKER_02]: to show this to people people
[00:46:36] [SPEAKER_02]: need to know.
[00:46:37] [SPEAKER_02]: And then the last six minutes
[00:46:38] [SPEAKER_02]: of the film are largely it
[00:46:41] [SPEAKER_02]: feels like real on the street
[00:46:43] [SPEAKER_02]: interviews with people about
[00:46:44] [SPEAKER_02]: their paranormal experiences.
[00:46:46] [SPEAKER_02]: Totally wedged in nonsense.
[00:46:47] [SPEAKER_02]: Right.
[00:46:48] [SPEAKER_02]: And the idea they like just
[00:46:49] [SPEAKER_02]: show them and being like I
[00:46:50] [SPEAKER_02]: know what I saw I know it's
[00:46:52] [SPEAKER_02]: real.
[00:46:52] [SPEAKER_02]: And if they know Khan's
[00:46:53] [SPEAKER_02]: getting at this idea that
[00:46:54] [SPEAKER_02]: like he needs to release this
[00:46:55] [SPEAKER_02]: film not to like like muddy
[00:46:59] [SPEAKER_02]: up M. Night's name but so that
[00:47:01] [SPEAKER_02]: other people out there know
[00:47:02] [SPEAKER_02]: that they're not alone.
[00:47:03] [SPEAKER_02]: That they're not crazy that
[00:47:05] [SPEAKER_02]: these things have happened even
[00:47:06] [SPEAKER_02]: to Academy Award nominee M.
[00:47:08] [SPEAKER_02]: Night Shyamalan.
[00:47:10] [SPEAKER_02]: And that's how the film ends
[00:47:11] [SPEAKER_02]: is just on these interviews
[00:47:12] [SPEAKER_02]: with other people.
[00:47:13] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah it's stupid but there's
[00:47:15] [SPEAKER_02]: a couple of other things I
[00:47:15] [SPEAKER_02]: want to mention before we
[00:47:16] [SPEAKER_02]: get to the main thing.
[00:47:17] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:47:17] [SPEAKER_04]: Because that part is stupid
[00:47:18] [SPEAKER_04]: do you agree?
[00:47:19] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah don't mad down.
[00:47:20] [SPEAKER_02]: Okay so the character I
[00:47:22] [SPEAKER_02]: was supposed to play appears
[00:47:23] [SPEAKER_02]: like six more times he goes
[00:47:24] [SPEAKER_02]: to him for like follow-up
[00:47:24] [SPEAKER_02]: interviews.
[00:47:24] [SPEAKER_04]: They keep going back to the
[00:47:25] [SPEAKER_04]: chat room.
[00:47:26] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:47:26] [SPEAKER_02]: And it keeps on like going to
[00:47:28] [SPEAKER_02]: meet him outside of school and
[00:47:29] [SPEAKER_02]: ask him like more questions.
[00:47:31] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah he should be arrested.
[00:47:32] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:47:33] [SPEAKER_04]: Nathaniel Khan for his behavior
[00:47:34] [SPEAKER_02]: in this film.
[00:47:34] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah 100%.
[00:47:35] [SPEAKER_04]: Because he also there's this
[00:47:37] [SPEAKER_04]: thing they never resolve where
[00:47:38] [SPEAKER_04]: there are two black limousines.
[00:47:40] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh Jesus Christ.
[00:47:42] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh my God we have to talk
[00:47:43] [SPEAKER_02]: about this.
[00:47:44] [SPEAKER_02]: Just sort of hover outside
[00:47:45] [SPEAKER_02]: the center of the village.
[00:47:46] [SPEAKER_02]: Outside the center of the
[00:47:46] [SPEAKER_04]: village and when he tries to
[00:47:48] [SPEAKER_04]: approach one they drive away.
[00:47:49] [SPEAKER_02]: They have no license plates
[00:47:51] [SPEAKER_02]: front or back plates.
[00:47:53] [SPEAKER_02]: And he's like looking there
[00:47:54] [SPEAKER_02]: they're parked there all
[00:47:55] [SPEAKER_02]: the time the second he like
[00:47:56] [SPEAKER_02]: cups his hands.
[00:47:57] [SPEAKER_02]: He says mirrors are totally
[00:47:59] [SPEAKER_02]: smoked.
[00:48:00] [SPEAKER_02]: The windows are totally smoked
[00:48:01] [SPEAKER_02]: right?
[00:48:02] [SPEAKER_02]: And he like cups his hands to
[00:48:03] [SPEAKER_02]: try to look through the
[00:48:03] [SPEAKER_02]: window and the second he
[00:48:05] [SPEAKER_02]: touches the window it peels
[00:48:07] [SPEAKER_02]: out.
[00:48:08] [SPEAKER_01]: Right.
[00:48:09] [SPEAKER_02]: It's a ghost.
[00:48:10] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah it's stupid.
[00:48:12] [SPEAKER_04]: But anyway so he interviews
[00:48:13] [SPEAKER_04]: Adrian Brody.
[00:48:15] [SPEAKER_04]: Okay star of the village.
[00:48:16] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah and Adrian Brody doesn't
[00:48:18] [SPEAKER_04]: have anything to say we'll
[00:48:19] [SPEAKER_04]: get back to him because
[00:48:20] [SPEAKER_04]: obviously the Adrian Brody
[00:48:21] [SPEAKER_04]: interviews uses a button for
[00:48:22] [SPEAKER_04]: the other thing in this
[00:48:23] [SPEAKER_04]: movie.
[00:48:24] [SPEAKER_04]: Right.
[00:48:24] [SPEAKER_04]: But I was just annoyed
[00:48:25] [SPEAKER_04]: because they also talk about
[00:48:26] [SPEAKER_04]: how they're going to interview
[00:48:27] [SPEAKER_04]: Joaquin Phoenix,
[00:48:28] [SPEAKER_04]: William Hurt and Sigourney
[00:48:30] [SPEAKER_04]: Weaver.
[00:48:30] [SPEAKER_04]: And I was like hey they got
[00:48:32] [SPEAKER_04]: Brody and they got a certain
[00:48:33] [SPEAKER_04]: other person in this movie
[00:48:34] [SPEAKER_04]: who's in this movie
[00:48:35] [SPEAKER_04]: unbelievably.
[00:48:36] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:48:37] [SPEAKER_04]: Why can't they get these
[00:48:38] [SPEAKER_04]: guys they're on the fucking
[00:48:39] [SPEAKER_04]: set of the village they
[00:48:39] [SPEAKER_04]: don't even get them.
[00:48:40] [SPEAKER_04]: David it's a close set okay.
[00:48:42] [SPEAKER_04]: It's really annoying I wanted
[00:48:43] [SPEAKER_04]: at least to have to watch
[00:48:45] [SPEAKER_04]: Joaquin Phoenix debase
[00:48:46] [SPEAKER_02]: himself with this movie.
[00:48:48] [SPEAKER_02]: So okay I want to talk about
[00:48:49] [SPEAKER_02]: how to set up this thing
[00:48:51] [SPEAKER_02]: because the way they get to
[00:48:52] [SPEAKER_02]: the crazy appearance in
[00:48:53] [SPEAKER_02]: this film okay.
[00:48:55] [SPEAKER_02]: They go to the childhood friend
[00:48:56] [SPEAKER_02]: who complains about M. Night
[00:48:57] [SPEAKER_02]: ceiling all the girls right.
[00:48:58] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:49:00] [SPEAKER_02]: And Nathan O'Conn asked this
[00:49:01] [SPEAKER_02]: question that no one would
[00:49:02] [SPEAKER_02]: ever ask where he's like
[00:49:04] [SPEAKER_02]: you know working with actors
[00:49:06] [SPEAKER_02]: you know he works with Bruce
[00:49:08] [SPEAKER_02]: Willis on the sixth sense
[00:49:09] [SPEAKER_02]: and that's a big breakout
[00:49:10] [SPEAKER_02]: and then he works with him
[00:49:11] [SPEAKER_02]: again on a breakable
[00:49:12] [SPEAKER_02]: and then they don't work
[00:49:13] [SPEAKER_02]: together again.
[00:49:14] [SPEAKER_02]: Is there a story there?
[00:49:18] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah he basically is like
[00:49:19] [SPEAKER_02]: what happened with Bruce
[00:49:20] [SPEAKER_02]: Willis and he's like you
[00:49:21] [SPEAKER_02]: know I think they were
[00:49:22] [SPEAKER_02]: close on the sixth sense
[00:49:23] [SPEAKER_02]: and then I think
[00:49:24] [SPEAKER_02]: unbreakable I think.
[00:49:25] [SPEAKER_04]: The film does not resolve
[00:49:26] [SPEAKER_04]: whether or not M. Night
[00:49:28] [SPEAKER_04]: Shamblin scared Bruce Willis
[00:49:29] [SPEAKER_04]: with the spooky ghost power.
[00:49:30] [SPEAKER_02]: They sort of imply that
[00:49:31] [SPEAKER_02]: they're like and then I
[00:49:32] [SPEAKER_04]: sort of imply it.
[00:49:33] [SPEAKER_04]: Right.
[00:49:33] [SPEAKER_04]: They also sort of imply
[00:49:34] [SPEAKER_04]: that maybe Mel Gibson has
[00:49:35] [SPEAKER_04]: entered his spooky ghost
[00:49:37] [SPEAKER_04]: realm but then they don't
[00:49:37] [SPEAKER_04]: follow that up.
[00:49:38] [SPEAKER_04]: Right and they're like
[00:49:39] [SPEAKER_04]: I think because it's
[00:49:40] [SPEAKER_04]: I shouldn't talk about this
[00:49:41] [SPEAKER_04]: I shouldn't talk about
[00:49:41] [SPEAKER_04]: that you find out that
[00:49:43] [SPEAKER_04]: he met with another actor
[00:49:44] [SPEAKER_04]: for signs before Mel Gibson
[00:49:46] [SPEAKER_04]: he said well yeah
[00:49:47] [SPEAKER_02]: oh so what he says
[00:49:48] [SPEAKER_02]: now this may have been
[00:49:49] [SPEAKER_04]: made after Mel Gibson had
[00:49:50] [SPEAKER_04]: his sugar tits freak out
[00:49:51] [SPEAKER_04]: or whatever his other
[00:49:52] [SPEAKER_04]: you know his passion
[00:49:53] [SPEAKER_04]: the Christ freak out
[00:49:54] [SPEAKER_04]: but it doesn't work anyway
[00:49:55] [SPEAKER_02]: but Mel Gibson is not in this
[00:49:57] [SPEAKER_02]: movie.
[00:49:57] [SPEAKER_02]: Right no I realize
[00:49:58] [SPEAKER_02]: this is the stream
[00:49:59] [SPEAKER_02]: what he does he goes Bruce
[00:50:00] [SPEAKER_02]: Willis this is what he was
[00:50:01] [SPEAKER_02]: he went Bruce Willis
[00:50:02] [SPEAKER_02]: he does sixth sense
[00:50:03] [SPEAKER_02]: then he does unbreakable
[00:50:04] [SPEAKER_02]: he's not in signs.
[00:50:06] [SPEAKER_02]: Sure.
[00:50:07] [SPEAKER_02]: Why did that relationship
[00:50:08] [SPEAKER_02]: end to sort of imply
[00:50:09] [SPEAKER_02]: it's something bad
[00:50:09] [SPEAKER_02]: happened and he goes
[00:50:10] [SPEAKER_02]: was Bruce Willis ever
[00:50:12] [SPEAKER_02]: planned to be the lead
[00:50:13] [SPEAKER_02]: in sign and he goes
[00:50:14] [SPEAKER_02]: I don't think Bruce
[00:50:15] [SPEAKER_02]: Willis was but there
[00:50:16] [SPEAKER_02]: was another actor
[00:50:18] [SPEAKER_02]: and he goes another actor
[00:50:19] [SPEAKER_02]: who was it he goes
[00:50:20] [SPEAKER_02]: I don't you know
[00:50:21] [SPEAKER_02]: I mean oh he says
[00:50:22] [SPEAKER_02]: but you know about the other
[00:50:23] [SPEAKER_02]: actor he says it offhand
[00:50:25] [SPEAKER_02]: he goes but you know about
[00:50:26] [SPEAKER_02]: the other actor
[00:50:26] [SPEAKER_02]: before Mel
[00:50:27] [SPEAKER_02]: right and he goes
[00:50:28] [SPEAKER_02]: what other actor
[00:50:28] [SPEAKER_02]: this is as far as I know
[00:50:30] [SPEAKER_02]: completely made up
[00:50:31] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh completely made up
[00:50:31] [SPEAKER_02]: and he's like oh I thought
[00:50:32] [SPEAKER_02]: you knew and he's like
[00:50:33] [SPEAKER_02]: no I shouldn't talk about
[00:50:34] [SPEAKER_02]: this I shouldn't talk about
[00:50:35] [SPEAKER_02]: this and then turns around
[00:50:36] [SPEAKER_02]: and gets on a train
[00:50:38] [SPEAKER_02]: this whole interview is
[00:50:39] [SPEAKER_02]: happening
[00:50:39] [SPEAKER_04]: I forgot about that
[00:50:41] [SPEAKER_04]: he literally runs onto a
[00:50:42] [SPEAKER_04]: train that then leaves
[00:50:43] [SPEAKER_04]: the station
[00:50:43] [SPEAKER_04]: this interview is just
[00:50:44] [SPEAKER_04]: happening at a train platform
[00:50:45] [SPEAKER_04]: I believe it's at
[00:50:46] [SPEAKER_04]: the unbreakable station
[00:50:47] [SPEAKER_04]: yes broad street
[00:50:49] [SPEAKER_04]: unbreakable
[00:50:50] [SPEAKER_04]: got it
[00:50:51] [SPEAKER_02]: Port Ben has to know the time
[00:50:52] [SPEAKER_02]: every time
[00:50:53] [SPEAKER_02]: unstoppable
[00:50:55] [SPEAKER_02]: but yes
[00:50:55] [SPEAKER_02]: they've just been having this
[00:50:56] [SPEAKER_02]: calm casual interview
[00:50:57] [SPEAKER_02]: at train
[00:50:58] [SPEAKER_02]: right the point where he gets
[00:50:59] [SPEAKER_02]: again comfortable part of
[00:51:00] [SPEAKER_02]: who was the other actor
[00:51:01] [SPEAKER_02]: he goes into the chat room
[00:51:03] [SPEAKER_02]: and he goes hey
[00:51:04] [SPEAKER_02]: little M night
[00:51:05] [SPEAKER_02]: the best thing is he has to
[00:51:06] [SPEAKER_02]: go back to the fucking kids
[00:51:07] [SPEAKER_02]: basement over
[00:51:08] [SPEAKER_02]: yeah anyway
[00:51:09] [SPEAKER_02]: he goes little M night
[00:51:10] [SPEAKER_02]: quiz for everyone
[00:51:11] [SPEAKER_02]: so he's like
[00:51:12] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm gonna figure out
[00:51:13] [SPEAKER_02]: the answer to this question
[00:51:14] [SPEAKER_02]: I don't know the answer
[00:51:15] [SPEAKER_02]: to by posing it as a question
[00:51:17] [SPEAKER_02]: to these other kids
[00:51:18] [SPEAKER_02]: like they have to impress
[00:51:19] [SPEAKER_02]: me because at this point
[00:51:20] [SPEAKER_02]: Nathaniel Kahn has risen to a 2
[00:51:23] [SPEAKER_04]: yeah no yeah he becomes a 2
[00:51:25] [SPEAKER_02]: I don't think he ever hits 3
[00:51:26] [SPEAKER_02]: I don't think so
[00:51:26] [SPEAKER_02]: I think he's 6 with 2
[00:51:27] [SPEAKER_02]: but he hits a 2 on the board
[00:51:29] [SPEAKER_02]: right
[00:51:29] [SPEAKER_02]: and he's like
[00:51:30] [SPEAKER_02]: quick signs trivia time
[00:51:32] [SPEAKER_02]: or a quick M night trivia time
[00:51:33] [SPEAKER_02]: they're like okay
[00:51:34] [SPEAKER_02]: gives what you got
[00:51:35] [SPEAKER_02]: and he's like
[00:51:36] [SPEAKER_02]: did you know that there was
[00:51:37] [SPEAKER_02]: another actor
[00:51:39] [SPEAKER_02]: in talks
[00:51:40] [SPEAKER_02]: or he says attached
[00:51:42] [SPEAKER_02]: to do signs before mail
[00:51:43] [SPEAKER_02]: and the guy goes like
[00:51:45] [SPEAKER_02]: yeah of course
[00:51:46] [SPEAKER_02]: he's like okay who
[00:51:49] [SPEAKER_04]: then there's a whole
[00:51:49] [SPEAKER_04]: rigmarole about like
[00:51:50] [SPEAKER_04]: you need to tell me something
[00:51:51] [SPEAKER_04]: where's the village set
[00:51:52] [SPEAKER_04]: like there's a whole back and forth
[00:51:53] [SPEAKER_04]: right he exchanged information
[00:51:54] [SPEAKER_04]: you know who gives a shit
[00:51:56] [SPEAKER_04]: and then he says the name
[00:51:58] [SPEAKER_04]: can we say in unison
[00:51:59] [SPEAKER_04]: one two three
[00:52:01] [SPEAKER_04]: Johnny Depp
[00:52:03] [SPEAKER_04]: and this is in 2003
[00:52:05] [SPEAKER_04]: this is Pirates of the Caribbean
[00:52:06] [SPEAKER_04]: just came out
[00:52:07] [SPEAKER_04]: I mean the movie came out a year later
[00:52:08] [SPEAKER_04]: you know but this is
[00:52:09] [SPEAKER_02]: Johnny Depp is hot shit
[00:52:11] [SPEAKER_02]: but David I worked on this film
[00:52:13] [SPEAKER_02]: and I can attest that this
[00:52:14] [SPEAKER_02]: film was shooting in
[00:52:15] [SPEAKER_02]: October of 2003
[00:52:17] [SPEAKER_04]: yeah right so it was right after
[00:52:19] [SPEAKER_04]: this was four months
[00:52:21] [SPEAKER_04]: hit success yeah did you know he was
[00:52:23] [SPEAKER_04]: gonna be in the movie absolutely not
[00:52:24] [SPEAKER_04]: they didn't say to you like oh
[00:52:26] [SPEAKER_02]: and this is a debt picture
[00:52:26] [SPEAKER_02]: absolutely not
[00:52:29] [SPEAKER_02]: Johnny Depp
[00:52:31] [SPEAKER_02]: and the thing I kind of finds out is
[00:52:32] [SPEAKER_02]: Johnny Depp and the next thing you see
[00:52:33] [SPEAKER_02]: is him overlooking
[00:52:35] [SPEAKER_02]: the Philadelphia skyline
[00:52:37] [SPEAKER_02]: from his hotel room
[00:52:38] [SPEAKER_02]: on the phone with his aunt
[00:52:41] [SPEAKER_02]: yeah right or his mom
[00:52:42] [SPEAKER_02]: his mom he's calling his mom
[00:52:44] [SPEAKER_02]: and he goes hey mom
[00:52:45] [SPEAKER_02]: you know that friend of yours
[00:52:47] [SPEAKER_02]: who you went to elementary school with
[00:52:49] [SPEAKER_02]: who you said then became Johnny Depp's aunt
[00:52:52] [SPEAKER_02]: do you have her number
[00:52:53] [SPEAKER_02]: that's like the actual line of dialogue
[00:52:56] [SPEAKER_02]: and then it cuts to
[00:52:57] [SPEAKER_02]: Nathaniel Kahn
[00:52:58] [SPEAKER_02]: meeting Johnny Depp at the Chateau Marmont
[00:53:01] [SPEAKER_02]: and Johnny Depp is in this movie for like
[00:53:03] [SPEAKER_02]: six minutes
[00:53:03] [SPEAKER_04]: um and I would say
[00:53:05] [SPEAKER_04]: gives a pretty terrific performance
[00:53:08] [SPEAKER_02]: I think so too
[00:53:09] [SPEAKER_02]: uh this is actually a good
[00:53:11] [SPEAKER_02]: Johnny Depp performance
[00:53:12] [SPEAKER_05]: he's acting like a regular person
[00:53:14] [SPEAKER_02]: he's the only person who feels like a real person
[00:53:16] [SPEAKER_02]: in the movie
[00:53:16] [SPEAKER_04]: easily better than like most of the performances
[00:53:19] [SPEAKER_04]: he's given in the last five or so years
[00:53:21] [SPEAKER_04]: agreed and he actually
[00:53:22] [SPEAKER_04]: everything postsweeney Todd basically
[00:53:24] [SPEAKER_02]: he's the only person who feels like he's not
[00:53:27] [SPEAKER_02]: acting
[00:53:28] [SPEAKER_02]: yeah I agree
[00:53:29] [SPEAKER_02]: in the whole film
[00:53:29] [SPEAKER_04]: he's very natural
[00:53:30] [SPEAKER_04]: very natural
[00:53:31] [SPEAKER_04]: he's totally nailing the whole thing of like
[00:53:34] [SPEAKER_04]: you know I know I'm very famous
[00:53:35] [SPEAKER_04]: and this is like a very nice place that I'm in
[00:53:37] [SPEAKER_04]: but like I'm just a guy and like
[00:53:38] [SPEAKER_04]: that's a great moment
[00:53:39] [SPEAKER_05]: we're in a terrible fashion sense
[00:53:41] [SPEAKER_05]: yeah yeah
[00:53:42] [SPEAKER_02]: when he's like I've got like beer
[00:53:43] [SPEAKER_02]: and sandwiches
[00:53:44] [SPEAKER_02]: yeah but when the thing at Kahn's like
[00:53:45] [SPEAKER_02]: this is a great place to have your
[00:53:46] [SPEAKER_02]: and it's like well yeah I mean it's not mine
[00:53:48] [SPEAKER_02]: he's like a little uncomfortable with how nice it is
[00:53:51] [SPEAKER_02]: but he says to him
[00:53:53] [SPEAKER_02]: like what was the experience like
[00:53:54] [SPEAKER_02]: he's like well we met a few times
[00:53:56] [SPEAKER_02]: and
[00:53:56] [SPEAKER_02]: it was weird the first time was fine
[00:53:59] [SPEAKER_02]: the second time it felt like he was trying to like
[00:54:02] [SPEAKER_02]: the whole thing is like you've got Depp
[00:54:05] [SPEAKER_02]: yeah
[00:54:05] [SPEAKER_04]: I don't know how this happened
[00:54:07] [SPEAKER_04]: I can't even begin to understand it
[00:54:09] [SPEAKER_04]: I love so does Nathaniel Kahn know Depp
[00:54:11] [SPEAKER_04]: does M. Night know Depp
[00:54:12] [SPEAKER_04]: never made a movie with him
[00:54:13] [SPEAKER_04]: that's what's fascinating
[00:54:14] [SPEAKER_04]: none of it makes any sense
[00:54:15] [SPEAKER_04]: you've got Depp
[00:54:16] [SPEAKER_04]: and then you don't even really use it for much of anything
[00:54:18] [SPEAKER_04]: he just kind of suggests that M. Night was weird
[00:54:20] [SPEAKER_04]: well okay
[00:54:21] [SPEAKER_04]: and then he says like he was made to learn
[00:54:23] [SPEAKER_04]: these parroted sort of quotes
[00:54:25] [SPEAKER_04]: about secrets about like oh you know
[00:54:28] [SPEAKER_02]: George Bernard Shard quote
[00:54:29] [SPEAKER_02]: which he couldn't remember
[00:54:30] [SPEAKER_02]: and then the other one is like
[00:54:33] [SPEAKER_02]: I think
[00:54:34] [SPEAKER_05]: it stuck out because it was so goofy
[00:54:35] [SPEAKER_02]: yeah it goes like secrets are interesting
[00:54:38] [SPEAKER_02]: because you don't know whether or not they're real
[00:54:39] [SPEAKER_02]: or not don't you think
[00:54:40] [SPEAKER_02]: and he goes and I remembered
[00:54:41] [SPEAKER_02]: the question
[00:54:42] [SPEAKER_02]: that one because of the question at the end
[00:54:45] [SPEAKER_02]: but what Johnny Depp
[00:54:47] [SPEAKER_04]: the reality of this film
[00:54:48] [SPEAKER_04]: and like I know we all rag on him now
[00:54:50] [SPEAKER_04]: but he was such a fucking huge deal
[00:54:52] [SPEAKER_04]: that was his peak
[00:54:52] [SPEAKER_04]: such a huge deal at this time
[00:54:54] [SPEAKER_04]: that was his peak moment
[00:54:54] [SPEAKER_04]: secret window like made 80 million
[00:54:57] [SPEAKER_04]: they hit the box office
[00:54:58] [SPEAKER_04]: even though it was the worst movie ever made
[00:54:59] [SPEAKER_04]: just because he was in it
[00:55:00] [SPEAKER_04]: you know anything he was in was the hottest shit
[00:55:02] [SPEAKER_02]: this was Johnny Depp had just been nominated
[00:55:04] [SPEAKER_02]: for an Oscar
[00:55:05] [SPEAKER_02]: yeah
[00:55:06] [SPEAKER_02]: for Pirates of the Caribbean
[00:55:07] [SPEAKER_02]: right
[00:55:08] [SPEAKER_02]: which is one of the highest grossing films of all time
[00:55:09] [SPEAKER_02]: absolutely
[00:55:10] [SPEAKER_02]: like he could not have been
[00:55:11] [SPEAKER_02]: at a better point because he was like
[00:55:13] [SPEAKER_02]: it was his first Oscar nomination
[00:55:14] [SPEAKER_02]: for his first big commercial break
[00:55:17] [SPEAKER_02]: it was his big comeback
[00:55:17] [SPEAKER_02]: it was everything
[00:55:18] [SPEAKER_02]: yeah yeah
[00:55:19] [SPEAKER_02]: it was everything
[00:55:19] [SPEAKER_02]: he was on the very top of the world
[00:55:21] [SPEAKER_02]: right
[00:55:22] [SPEAKER_02]: and he decides to appear
[00:55:24] [SPEAKER_02]: in the buried secret of Amnesty Amalan
[00:55:25] [SPEAKER_02]: and this film implies that
[00:55:27] [SPEAKER_02]: Johnny Depp at this peak moment
[00:55:29] [SPEAKER_02]: right
[00:55:29] [SPEAKER_02]: I guess science had been a little bit earlier
[00:55:31] [SPEAKER_02]: but he was still a big star
[00:55:33] [SPEAKER_02]: right
[00:55:33] [SPEAKER_02]: yeah
[00:55:34] [SPEAKER_02]: that
[00:55:34] [SPEAKER_02]: that he had maybe
[00:55:36] [SPEAKER_02]: which by the way he would have been terrible
[00:55:37] [SPEAKER_02]: in that role
[00:55:39] [SPEAKER_02]: yeah
[00:55:39] [SPEAKER_02]: it was a horrible casting idea
[00:55:41] [SPEAKER_02]: for him to play the Mel Gibson role in science
[00:55:42] [SPEAKER_02]: but
[00:55:43] [SPEAKER_02]: the film implies that
[00:55:45] [SPEAKER_02]: he had two meetings
[00:55:47] [SPEAKER_02]: exploratory meetings
[00:55:48] [SPEAKER_02]: with Amnesty Amalan about taking the role
[00:55:50] [SPEAKER_02]: and on the second meeting
[00:55:51] [SPEAKER_02]: probably like a coffee meeting or whatever
[00:55:53] [SPEAKER_02]: yeah
[00:55:54] [SPEAKER_02]: Amnesty was like
[00:55:54] [SPEAKER_02]: hey I love this talk we're doing about the script
[00:55:57] [SPEAKER_02]: before we go any further
[00:55:58] [SPEAKER_02]: can I have you memorize
[00:55:59] [SPEAKER_02]: three quotes
[00:56:00] [SPEAKER_02]: that you can apply
[00:56:02] [SPEAKER_02]: when doing press for the film
[00:56:03] [SPEAKER_02]: that we haven't even shot yet
[00:56:05] [SPEAKER_02]: that we're still just talking about
[00:56:06] [SPEAKER_02]: whether or not you want to be in
[00:56:07] [SPEAKER_02]: at meeting number two he was like
[00:56:09] [SPEAKER_02]: here's a George Bernard Shah quote
[00:56:11] [SPEAKER_02]: oh you want me to memorize this for the character
[00:56:13] [SPEAKER_02]: no I want you to memorize this for when you do interviews
[00:56:15] [SPEAKER_02]: mm-hmm
[00:56:16] [SPEAKER_02]: two years from now
[00:56:18] [SPEAKER_02]: anyway when he goes back and interviews
[00:56:20] [SPEAKER_02]: Adrian Brody say about this
[00:56:21] [SPEAKER_02]: Adrian Brody
[00:56:21] [SPEAKER_04]: I think there's also an implication that he tried some weird
[00:56:23] [SPEAKER_04]: supernatural shit on Johnny Depp
[00:56:25] [SPEAKER_04]: and that's why Johnny Depp dropped out
[00:56:26] [SPEAKER_04]: agreed
[00:56:27] [SPEAKER_04]: like he was like
[00:56:29] [SPEAKER_04]: Henry's here
[00:56:29] [SPEAKER_04]: yeah
[00:56:30] [SPEAKER_04]: but then I love the implication that he then
[00:56:32] [SPEAKER_04]: tried that on Mel Gibson
[00:56:33] [SPEAKER_04]: Mel Gibson was like
[00:56:34] [SPEAKER_04]: yeah
[00:56:35] [SPEAKER_04]: we're cooking with gas
[00:56:36] [SPEAKER_04]: you're crazy
[00:56:37] [SPEAKER_03]: I love it
[00:56:39] [SPEAKER_02]: I see ghosts too
[00:56:41] [SPEAKER_02]: when he interviews Adrian Brody
[00:56:42] [SPEAKER_02]: Adrian Brody says the stuff that Johnny Depp said
[00:56:45] [SPEAKER_02]: he had been taught to memorize right
[00:56:47] [SPEAKER_02]: yeah they're trying to get Adrian Brody just
[00:56:48] [SPEAKER_02]: talk about
[00:56:49] [SPEAKER_02]: the film and he's like can you tell us about your character
[00:56:51] [SPEAKER_02]: he's like
[00:56:52] [SPEAKER_02]: I don't think I can
[00:56:53] [SPEAKER_02]: which is like boy are you gonna be disappointed
[00:56:55] [SPEAKER_02]: when you hear what his character is
[00:56:57] [SPEAKER_02]: it's simple Jack
[00:56:58] [SPEAKER_02]: who staves people
[00:57:02] [SPEAKER_02]: he's like
[00:57:03] [SPEAKER_02]: I don't think I could say anything about my character
[00:57:04] [SPEAKER_02]: he won't even admit that he has long hair
[00:57:06] [SPEAKER_02]: yeah I heard he had long hair in it
[00:57:07] [SPEAKER_02]: I don't know
[00:57:08] [SPEAKER_02]: you know the thing about secrets is
[00:57:10] [SPEAKER_02]: and then he just goes into the quote
[00:57:11] [SPEAKER_02]: and you're like
[00:57:12] [SPEAKER_02]: okay I get the point they're making
[00:57:14] [SPEAKER_02]: he does this to every actor
[00:57:16] [SPEAKER_02]: but instead the film cuts to
[00:57:17] [SPEAKER_02]: Nathaniel Codd in the editing room going
[00:57:19] [SPEAKER_02]: show me that tick
[00:57:20] [SPEAKER_02]: show me that clip again of Johnny Depp
[00:57:22] [SPEAKER_04]: they're like rewind it like six times in case
[00:57:24] [SPEAKER_04]: you didn't get it
[00:57:25] [SPEAKER_02]: and they go back and forth between the two
[00:57:27] [SPEAKER_02]: they go to Johnny Depp saying
[00:57:28] [SPEAKER_02]: I don't remember
[00:57:29] [SPEAKER_02]: some George Binar Shaw quote
[00:57:31] [SPEAKER_02]: and they go back to Adrian Brody going
[00:57:32] [SPEAKER_02]: you know I think it says George Binar Shaw
[00:57:34] [SPEAKER_02]: said he's like wait a second rewind it
[00:57:36] [SPEAKER_04]: wait but do these quotes match up or were
[00:57:38] [SPEAKER_04]: two separate George Bernard Shaw quotes
[00:57:40] [SPEAKER_05]: they treat it like the JFK like assassination
[00:57:42] [SPEAKER_04]: back into the left
[00:57:44] [SPEAKER_04]: four times they go back and forth
[00:57:46] [SPEAKER_04]: fucking so stupid
[00:57:47] [SPEAKER_04]: Ben how long have we been running for
[00:57:49] [SPEAKER_04]: over an hour
[00:57:50] [SPEAKER_04]: okay so we're just gonna wrap this shit up
[00:57:51] [SPEAKER_04]: yes
[00:57:52] [SPEAKER_04]: what do we think of M. Night Shyamalan
[00:57:53] [SPEAKER_02]: god I mean this was
[00:57:55] [SPEAKER_04]: this was a nice insight into
[00:57:57] [SPEAKER_04]: his egomania
[00:57:59] [SPEAKER_04]: his perceived egomania and what like
[00:58:01] [SPEAKER_04]: you know where everything was
[00:58:02] [SPEAKER_04]: people began to really dislike about him
[00:58:05] [SPEAKER_04]: which was that he would take over a movie
[00:58:07] [SPEAKER_04]: in a way that like the movie didn't need
[00:58:09] [SPEAKER_02]: well and there's also there there are two
[00:58:11] [SPEAKER_02]: moments when he's being interviewed in
[00:58:13] [SPEAKER_02]: this film that I think are actually pretty telling
[00:58:15] [SPEAKER_02]: right and M. Night's not
[00:58:17] [SPEAKER_02]: bad in this from an acting standpoint
[00:58:20] [SPEAKER_02]: he's not bad
[00:58:21] [SPEAKER_02]: he's pretty good yeah I mean like
[00:58:24] [SPEAKER_04]: whatever he's fine he's perfectly personable
[00:58:26] [SPEAKER_04]: I maybe a little too like cute
[00:58:28] [SPEAKER_04]: with the whole like I'm a coy creeper
[00:58:30] [SPEAKER_04]: you know but what he's fine I agree but
[00:58:32] [SPEAKER_04]: it's I think it's maybe his third best
[00:58:33] [SPEAKER_04]: performance
[00:58:35] [SPEAKER_02]: we rank in M. Night performances away what's the
[00:58:37] [SPEAKER_02]: best the best one I think is Lady in
[00:58:39] [SPEAKER_02]: the Water
[00:58:41] [SPEAKER_02]: I think I think that is his best performance
[00:58:44] [SPEAKER_04]: I can't award that at any sort of
[00:58:46] [SPEAKER_02]: I mean Ray Reddy is the worst one right
[00:58:49] [SPEAKER_04]: Ray Reddy is the most harmful
[00:58:51] [SPEAKER_04]: but I would say Lady in the Water is
[00:58:53] [SPEAKER_04]: probably the second most harmful but I
[00:58:54] [SPEAKER_04]: think that's from a character standpoint
[00:58:56] [SPEAKER_04]: I understand I think his best performance
[00:58:58] [SPEAKER_04]: is in the sixth sense oh he's really good
[00:59:00] [SPEAKER_02]: now I'm gonna say that
[00:59:01] [SPEAKER_02]: what's the village
[00:59:05] [SPEAKER_02]: okay can I do definitive ranking
[00:59:06] [SPEAKER_02]: no there's no ranking this is my ranking
[00:59:09] [SPEAKER_02]: my ranking is Lady in the Water
[00:59:10] [SPEAKER_02]: 6 cents then I'd go the buried secret
[00:59:13] [SPEAKER_02]: then the village then I'd go the village
[00:59:15] [SPEAKER_02]: we're gonna breakable that would be next
[00:59:18] [SPEAKER_02]: did it again damn it
[00:59:19] [SPEAKER_02]: then praying with anger
[00:59:22] [SPEAKER_02]: then I thought he was really bad
[00:59:24] [SPEAKER_02]: and happening
[00:59:25] [SPEAKER_02]: who's the oh he's the voice of Joey on the film
[00:59:29] [SPEAKER_04]: just like did you see 10 clover field
[00:59:31] [SPEAKER_04]: yeah
[00:59:32] [SPEAKER_02]: badly Cooper's voice yeah beginning there
[00:59:34] [SPEAKER_04]: you like 10 clover field man
[00:59:35] [SPEAKER_04]: yeah I talk about some other movies yeah
[00:59:37] [SPEAKER_02]: I don't know if you saw my tweet about 10
[00:59:39] [SPEAKER_02]: clover field Lane I think you did
[00:59:41] [SPEAKER_02]: a similar tweet to the tweet I did which was
[00:59:43] [SPEAKER_04]: something like more like 8.5
[00:59:45] [SPEAKER_04]: that was my exact I think I did something
[00:59:47] [SPEAKER_02]: I think it's like a solid 8.5 I liked it a lot
[00:59:49] [SPEAKER_04]: yeah those are good movie I'm planning to see it again
[00:59:51] [SPEAKER_04]: I liked it yeah I liked a lot
[00:59:53] [SPEAKER_04]: I just saw the jungle book which we were talking about
[00:59:55] [SPEAKER_02]: off mic boy I'm so excited for that movie
[00:59:57] [SPEAKER_04]: yeah it's okay it's pretty I would say it's easily
[00:59:59] [SPEAKER_04]: the best John Fevro movie
[01:00:01] [SPEAKER_04]: that was made with a big budget since Iron Man
[01:00:04] [SPEAKER_04]: but can we say about the worst
[01:00:05] [SPEAKER_02]: compliment you can give me can we say that I've been amp
[01:00:07] [SPEAKER_02]: for this movie like five months it's your kind of
[01:00:10] [SPEAKER_02]: movie that when I saw the trailer
[01:00:11] [SPEAKER_02]: when we went to see
[01:00:13] [SPEAKER_02]: not Phantom S we went to see
[01:00:16] [SPEAKER_02]: Force Awakens together
[01:00:17] [SPEAKER_02]: yeah and the trailer came up
[01:00:19] [SPEAKER_02]: I was like I think that looks great and you were like
[01:00:21] [SPEAKER_02]: I can't believe you think this looks good
[01:00:22] [SPEAKER_04]: I was just well the whole
[01:00:24] [SPEAKER_04]: animals talking biz
[01:00:26] [SPEAKER_04]: is just hard to pull off but they pulled
[01:00:28] [SPEAKER_04]: off you're telling that I was right
[01:00:29] [SPEAKER_04]: I have some questions do you know any yeah
[01:00:32] [SPEAKER_04]: absolutely I mean I'm breakable
[01:00:34] [SPEAKER_04]: it was I mean to me it's like a three star
[01:00:36] [SPEAKER_04]: movie that's better than I thought it was going to be
[01:00:38] [SPEAKER_04]: three out of four or five five I'm not Roger
[01:00:40] [SPEAKER_04]: Ebert
[01:00:44] [SPEAKER_04]: you like that didn't you
[01:00:48] [SPEAKER_04]: but did they because you probably know more than
[01:00:50] [SPEAKER_04]: me was the kid acting against anything
[01:00:52] [SPEAKER_04]: where there were the uh were there people doing
[01:00:54] [SPEAKER_04]: motion capture was like Bill Murray on set
[01:00:56] [SPEAKER_02]: or whoever not the voice actors but I believe
[01:00:58] [SPEAKER_04]: there were people doing yeah because I mean
[01:01:00] [SPEAKER_04]: the kids bad but he's kind of cute
[01:01:02] [SPEAKER_04]: but I mean he's like objectively it's a quite
[01:01:04] [SPEAKER_04]: bad performer but that's like an impossible
[01:01:06] [SPEAKER_04]: it's impossible you'd have to find a wonder
[01:01:08] [SPEAKER_02]: amazing he reads a line at all you would need to
[01:01:10] [SPEAKER_02]: find Haley Jalaz I'm like you need to look the kids
[01:01:12] [SPEAKER_04]: got the look yeah that's the most important thing
[01:01:14] [SPEAKER_04]: um also has a different ending
[01:01:17] [SPEAKER_04]: and I was sort of intrigued by that
[01:01:18] [SPEAKER_04]: and oh interesting and I haven't read
[01:01:21] [SPEAKER_04]: Rudyard Kipling's jungle book you know
[01:01:22] [SPEAKER_04]: books so I don't know if it was more
[01:01:25] [SPEAKER_04]: like tapping into that I don't know
[01:01:26] [SPEAKER_04]: I have no idea but it's generally pretty good
[01:01:28] [SPEAKER_04]: it's generally pretty good it's not it
[01:01:30] [SPEAKER_04]: hasn't stuck with me at all
[01:01:32] [SPEAKER_04]: I'm so excited to see it I'm probably going to
[01:01:34] [SPEAKER_04]: find out I had a decent time with it I'm going to
[01:01:36] [SPEAKER_04]: love it Favreau is a good director yeah
[01:01:38] [SPEAKER_04]: of action you know yeah uh
[01:01:40] [SPEAKER_04]: although he made two awful movies so we
[01:01:42] [SPEAKER_04]: you know but then chef's good which
[01:01:44] [SPEAKER_04]: are the two you'd say are awful Iron Man
[01:01:45] [SPEAKER_04]: and uh Cabo as an alien oh yes
[01:01:47] [SPEAKER_02]: yes you forgot Cabo as an alien
[01:01:49] [SPEAKER_02]: existed in here yes and I want to make sure
[01:01:51] [SPEAKER_02]: I want to make sure you weren't saying Zathura is awful
[01:01:53] [SPEAKER_04]: no Zathura is terrific I mean Elf
[01:01:55] [SPEAKER_04]: Zathura Iron Man is a very nice run of like
[01:01:57] [SPEAKER_04]: very winning movie agreed yeah
[01:01:59] [SPEAKER_04]: um love Favreau made
[01:02:01] [SPEAKER_04]: is not great agreed yeah
[01:02:03] [SPEAKER_04]: although Diddy was great on gether
[01:02:05] [SPEAKER_04]: yes that was wonderful here's
[01:02:07] [SPEAKER_02]: more he isn't made here's somewhere I'm night
[01:02:09] [SPEAKER_02]: he was puffed at yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
[01:02:11] [SPEAKER_02]: go back to M. Night um
[01:02:14] [SPEAKER_02]: there's
[01:02:14] [SPEAKER_02]: two interviews in this film that I think are very
[01:02:17] [SPEAKER_02]: telling right yeah one of
[01:02:19] [SPEAKER_02]: them he goes I feel like I can't just
[01:02:21] [SPEAKER_02]: make a movie now I feel like every
[01:02:23] [SPEAKER_02]: movie I make has to be something more sure
[01:02:24] [SPEAKER_02]: yeah and if I make a movie that's just
[01:02:27] [SPEAKER_02]: the complex you got wrapped up in right
[01:02:28] [SPEAKER_02]: right there but he's playing that as the character
[01:02:30] [SPEAKER_02]: but you're like that that line of dialogue
[01:02:33] [SPEAKER_02]: explains why this documentary
[01:02:34] [SPEAKER_04]: quote unquote exists the village
[01:02:36] [SPEAKER_04]: lady in the water and probably to some
[01:02:39] [SPEAKER_04]: extent the happening yeah then I think
[01:02:40] [SPEAKER_04]: he finally is disabused of that notion
[01:02:43] [SPEAKER_04]: yes but it like there needs to be this big
[01:02:45] [SPEAKER_04]: M. Night mystique around everything I
[01:02:46] [SPEAKER_04]: think he felt hoisted by his own guitar
[01:02:48] [SPEAKER_04]: absolutely reputation have become so big
[01:02:50] [SPEAKER_04]: I mean yeah think about it he makes
[01:02:53] [SPEAKER_04]: two movies that are not
[01:02:55] [SPEAKER_04]: along these lines at all yeah and then
[01:02:57] [SPEAKER_04]: he gets so locked in by the sixth sense
[01:02:59] [SPEAKER_04]: right that he makes a documentary
[01:03:01] [SPEAKER_04]: in the style of the sick you know like
[01:03:02] [SPEAKER_04]: practically tapping into like the thriller
[01:03:04] [SPEAKER_04]: mood which by the way conveniently ignores
[01:03:06] [SPEAKER_04]: the other two fucking they do say that the
[01:03:08] [SPEAKER_04]: village is his sixth movie but then one
[01:03:10] [SPEAKER_04]: acknowledgement of praying with anger and
[01:03:12] [SPEAKER_02]: why to wake but it's like when there is
[01:03:14] [SPEAKER_04]: that scene where it turns out that Henry
[01:03:15] [SPEAKER_04]: is the lead actor in wide awake yeah
[01:03:18] [SPEAKER_04]: that's not true guys I wish
[01:03:20] [SPEAKER_04]: he's asleep I'm so glad to be rid of
[01:03:23] [SPEAKER_04]: this bit yeah this is a bad one
[01:03:25] [SPEAKER_04]: he's a silly offend
[01:03:26] [SPEAKER_04]: this like actively brings two of our
[01:03:28] [SPEAKER_04]: episodes to a halt when he does it
[01:03:30] [SPEAKER_04]: because the guest doesn't know what the
[01:03:32] [SPEAKER_04]: fucking talking about because again you
[01:03:34] [SPEAKER_04]: don't need to watch either of the
[01:03:35] [SPEAKER_04]: movies you don't need to watch wide awake
[01:03:37] [SPEAKER_04]: no it's also
[01:03:40] [SPEAKER_04]: like Griffin does a lot of annoying
[01:03:41] [SPEAKER_04]: like voices and sounds but this is
[01:03:44] [SPEAKER_04]: hey what do you think of Rogue One
[01:03:46] [SPEAKER_04]: people were tweeting at me saying
[01:03:47] [SPEAKER_02]: we gotta talk Rogue One one of our
[01:03:50] [SPEAKER_02]: our fans on Twitter has said
[01:03:52] [SPEAKER_02]: he wants us to do a full 10 episode
[01:03:53] [SPEAKER_02]: mini series on the Rogue One trailer yeah
[01:03:55] [SPEAKER_04]: I think that might be stretching it to a minute long
[01:03:57] [SPEAKER_04]: yeah I thought it was good
[01:04:00] [SPEAKER_04]: I thought it was great I was
[01:04:01] [SPEAKER_04]: very hyped about it I just
[01:04:03] [SPEAKER_02]: I wasn't like blown away by it but I liked everything I saw
[01:04:08] [SPEAKER_02]: it's just still early
[01:04:09] [SPEAKER_02]: I feel like I still haven't gotten a real sense of
[01:04:11] [SPEAKER_02]: what the movie is and this is a big one
[01:04:13] [SPEAKER_02]: just because it's setting up the new paradigm
[01:04:15] [SPEAKER_02]: where we can have these films that are
[01:04:17] [SPEAKER_02]: sort of disconnected
[01:04:20] [SPEAKER_02]: from the main storyline
[01:04:21] [SPEAKER_02]: but the idea is that they're all going to feed into each other still
[01:04:23] [SPEAKER_02]: and they're a little nostalgic you know they've all got that
[01:04:26] [SPEAKER_04]: but it was just like the Gantilla
[01:04:28] [SPEAKER_04]: trailer I thought just that you know
[01:04:29] [SPEAKER_04]: like he picks on a really cool noise
[01:04:31] [SPEAKER_04]: to like punctuate the trailer
[01:04:33] [SPEAKER_04]: just good images great cast
[01:04:35] [SPEAKER_04]: that line reading
[01:04:37] [SPEAKER_04]: Paras Whitaker has it was like what will they do with their break-u
[01:04:39] [SPEAKER_04]: yeah it's great yeah it's great
[01:04:41] [SPEAKER_04]: yeah I like a lot of what I'm seeing
[01:04:43] [SPEAKER_04]: I am too I was I'm Mendelssohn looks
[01:04:45] [SPEAKER_04]: terrific looks unbelievable what a great actor
[01:04:47] [SPEAKER_04]: he's one of our finest actors we're so blessed to have
[01:04:49] [SPEAKER_04]: Ben Mendelssohn we're so lucky to have him
[01:04:51] [SPEAKER_02]: we are we are and he's really a high pitch right now
[01:04:53] [SPEAKER_04]: sorry let me doubt it then talk about annoying
[01:04:55] [SPEAKER_04]: sounds yep yep no no oh Deepak Chopra
[01:04:57] [SPEAKER_04]: is in this movie oh yeah
[01:04:58] [SPEAKER_02]: yeah he's also not bad
[01:05:00] [SPEAKER_04]: he's okay he's basically just asked to
[01:05:03] [SPEAKER_04]: you know say some mumbo jump
[01:05:04] [SPEAKER_02]: about good read what I wrote about myself
[01:05:08] [SPEAKER_02]: there is
[01:05:09] [SPEAKER_02]: what was I gonna say
[01:05:10] [SPEAKER_02]: I was a working
[01:05:12] [SPEAKER_02]: shooting something
[01:05:14] [SPEAKER_02]: when the Star Wars trailer came out
[01:05:16] [SPEAKER_02]: and so like I watched it by myself
[01:05:18] [SPEAKER_04]: Justice League part one is that where you were shooting
[01:05:20] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm shooting Justice League part one yeah
[01:05:22] [SPEAKER_02]: they're really good we're talking about the next
[01:05:24] [SPEAKER_02]: yep
[01:05:26] [SPEAKER_02]: I
[01:05:27] [SPEAKER_02]: I I'm shooting
[01:05:28] [SPEAKER_02]: an upcoming series for TBS
[01:05:30] [SPEAKER_02]: yeah very exciting not very exciting very funny
[01:05:32] [SPEAKER_02]: thank you
[01:05:35] [SPEAKER_04]: but let's do all the other
[01:05:37] [SPEAKER_02]: catch yeah I did I tried
[01:05:38] [SPEAKER_02]: to make that joke very funny it took me
[01:05:40] [SPEAKER_04]: six what was the other one we know drama
[01:05:43] [SPEAKER_04]: at CND
[01:05:44] [SPEAKER_04]: is very funny is TBS
[01:05:47] [SPEAKER_04]: was TBS yeah it is the Bravo
[01:05:49] [SPEAKER_04]: watch what happens was Bravo yeah
[01:05:50] [SPEAKER_04]: I feel like there's another Bravo one
[01:05:53] [SPEAKER_04]: then we started to do that live
[01:05:56] [SPEAKER_04]: characters welcome is also TBS
[01:06:00] [SPEAKER_04]: no characters welcome to
[01:06:01] [SPEAKER_04]: USA USA absolutely
[01:06:03] [SPEAKER_04]: yeah yeah IFC
[01:06:05] [SPEAKER_04]: is always on always
[01:06:07] [SPEAKER_04]: off or something like that
[01:06:08] [SPEAKER_04]: slightly off there you go
[01:06:11] [SPEAKER_04]: um yeah always on always off wouldn't make no
[01:06:13] [SPEAKER_02]: sense I this is just the thing I want
[01:06:15] [SPEAKER_04]: to say we're always on but no we're
[01:06:17] [SPEAKER_02]: off yeah right I was
[01:06:19] [SPEAKER_02]: I watched the trailer for Rogue one
[01:06:21] [SPEAKER_02]: Star Wars Rogue one
[01:06:23] [SPEAKER_02]: Rogue one a Star Wars story that morning when I woke up
[01:06:25] [SPEAKER_02]: right and then I was on set
[01:06:27] [SPEAKER_02]: and when I'm on set I leave my lock
[01:06:29] [SPEAKER_02]: off you're locked in away from my
[01:06:31] [SPEAKER_04]: person really irritating and Lee hard to
[01:06:33] [SPEAKER_04]: communicate with yes I set a podcast
[01:06:35] [SPEAKER_02]: recording yep yeah 100%
[01:06:37] [SPEAKER_02]: yep so I was like totally outside
[01:06:39] [SPEAKER_02]: of the echo chamber of everyone reacting
[01:06:41] [SPEAKER_02]: yeah yeah yeah to the trailer rather
[01:06:43] [SPEAKER_02]: and there was a kid on set
[01:06:45] [SPEAKER_02]: the the child of
[01:06:47] [SPEAKER_02]: one of the producers on the show was on
[01:06:49] [SPEAKER_02]: set and was like six he was wearing a
[01:06:51] [SPEAKER_02]: Star Wars teacher and I was like I want
[01:06:53] [SPEAKER_02]: talk to this kid about the trailer because I
[01:06:55] [SPEAKER_02]: haven't been able to talk to anyone about the trailer
[01:06:56] [SPEAKER_02]: and I was like what do you think of the trailer
[01:06:58] [SPEAKER_02]: and he was like I don't know what you're talking
[01:06:59] [SPEAKER_02]: right six years old so we pulled it up on
[01:07:00] [SPEAKER_02]: computer and watch it with him yeah and I
[01:07:02] [SPEAKER_02]: will say I could not explain to him
[01:07:05] [SPEAKER_02]: the idea that this was not episode 8
[01:07:07] [SPEAKER_02]: yeah I wonder if that's gonna be a problem
[01:07:10] [SPEAKER_02]: yeah and then like a bunch of the adults
[01:07:12] [SPEAKER_02]: on set were like wait there's already a
[01:07:14] [SPEAKER_02]: sequel and I was like well this is like
[01:07:16] [SPEAKER_04]: haven't you been following the dev cycle guys
[01:07:18] [SPEAKER_04]: like this is a different piece like in
[01:07:20] [SPEAKER_04]: the same IP you know right
[01:07:23] [SPEAKER_04]: I don't know the kid was really thrown
[01:07:24] [SPEAKER_02]: off you're saying this kid doesn't read
[01:07:26] [SPEAKER_02]: deadline every day no he's more of like a
[01:07:29] [SPEAKER_02]: screen-ramp guy
[01:07:32] [SPEAKER_04]: it's funny you know we tried to do
[01:07:34] [SPEAKER_04]: another M night episode and we you know
[01:07:36] [SPEAKER_04]: we talked about him we did talk about him
[01:07:37] [SPEAKER_04]: and we did fucking 11 episodes of him so
[01:07:40] [SPEAKER_02]: oh this is the second quote I want to say
[01:07:41] [SPEAKER_02]: that I thought was telling go ahead we're getting there
[01:07:43] [SPEAKER_02]: okay so there was the thing about it the movies have to
[01:07:46] [SPEAKER_02]: be more than just a movie right they do and
[01:07:48] [SPEAKER_02]: then he said like I like the idea of the
[01:07:49] [SPEAKER_02]: director being part of the story that's
[01:07:51] [SPEAKER_02]: not just the painting but you're interested in the hand
[01:07:54] [SPEAKER_02]: yeah sure right that did the painting
[01:07:56] [SPEAKER_02]: yeah and he references Alfred Hitchcock
[01:07:58] [SPEAKER_02]: a bunch of times he loves the birds and
[01:07:59] [SPEAKER_02]: he compares himself to Alfred Hitchcock
[01:08:01] [SPEAKER_04]: that's the trivia question he gets wrong yeah it's
[01:08:03] [SPEAKER_04]: that the birds is the major inspiration
[01:08:05] [SPEAKER_04]: not so psycho or right circle yeah
[01:08:07] [SPEAKER_02]: yeah but he says
[01:08:09] [SPEAKER_02]: like it makes sense suddenly you go
[01:08:12] [SPEAKER_02]: like oh this whole M night thing was like him trying
[01:08:13] [SPEAKER_02]: to possess himself as a figure in his movies
[01:08:16] [SPEAKER_02]: sure like Alfred Hitchcock like Hitchcock used
[01:08:17] [SPEAKER_02]: to do yeah but let's compare M night show
[01:08:19] [SPEAKER_02]: on to Alfred Hitchcock and I'm not talking about in terms of
[01:08:21] [SPEAKER_02]: filmography movie by movie no right we're not
[01:08:24] [SPEAKER_02]: going to do that over doubt but I'm saying in
[01:08:25] [SPEAKER_02]: this sense as their role as
[01:08:28] [SPEAKER_02]: a hand
[01:08:29] [SPEAKER_02]: dial-in for murder yeah movie good movie
[01:08:32] [SPEAKER_02]: lifeboat
[01:08:34] [SPEAKER_02]: have you ever seen dial-in in 3D
[01:08:35] [SPEAKER_02]: I haven't so they do the film form every couple of years it's amazing
[01:08:40] [SPEAKER_02]: um but
[01:08:41] [SPEAKER_02]: uh
[01:08:43] [SPEAKER_02]: let's compare this right Alfred Hitchcock
[01:08:45] [SPEAKER_02]: appeared in every one of his films sure little
[01:08:47] [SPEAKER_02]: cameos silent dialogue
[01:08:49] [SPEAKER_02]: yeah no I know I'm not
[01:08:51] [SPEAKER_04]: give himself bigger and bigger dramatic role you know Hitchcock also had Alfred Hitchcock presents
[01:08:55] [SPEAKER_04]: okay and he would introduce his trailers
[01:08:57] [SPEAKER_02]: and this is like I'm Alfred Hitchcock and the you know the tuba would play but this is the point I'd like to
[01:09:01] [SPEAKER_02]: make yeah M night equates himself to Alfred Hitchcock and he feels the need to make the supplemental
[01:09:05] [SPEAKER_02]: material and create this mythology
[01:09:07] [SPEAKER_02]: around his film so that he is the larger figure around them
[01:09:10] [SPEAKER_02]: Alfred Hitchcock did that in a way
[01:09:13] [SPEAKER_02]: that people believed like the prevailing theory is
[01:09:16] [SPEAKER_02]: the reason Alfred Hitchcock was not taken seriously enough as a filmmaker in his time
[01:09:21] [SPEAKER_02]: why he never won an Academy Award
[01:09:22] [SPEAKER_02]: was because his public persona was so goofy
[01:09:24] [SPEAKER_02]: yeah that he made these movies that were populist and that people liked a lot
[01:09:28] [SPEAKER_02]: he made a shit ton of money it made a shit ton of money but when he was doing the trailers it was always like oh here's that goofy tub
[01:09:32] [SPEAKER_02]: I mean that's why he was the first famous director right because he was entertaining
[01:09:36] [SPEAKER_04]: no one actually knew like what Victor Fleming looked like or you know like you know it's like
[01:09:40] [SPEAKER_04]: someone could you know do is John Houston over there like you know yeah he was the first right
[01:09:44] [SPEAKER_02]: showman director and Alfred Hitchcock essentially made himself into like a
[01:09:47] [SPEAKER_02]: comedia dellarte character right you know like hilarious it was like here's the iconography of what I look like
[01:09:52] [SPEAKER_02]: the bits like yeah tuba yeah
[01:09:55] [SPEAKER_02]: uh break the whole thing was that he was doing that one
[01:09:58] [SPEAKER_05]: he was like this uh
[01:10:01] [SPEAKER_05]: put my foot down right it is broken
[01:10:04] [SPEAKER_02]: Dan you did it wow we broke it
[01:10:06] [SPEAKER_02]: oh broke it dumb bit
[01:10:08] [SPEAKER_02]: he did he was this macabre like kind of like jolly old British fat man
[01:10:13] [SPEAKER_02]: yeah and like he was poking the air out of the seriousness of his own movies
[01:10:19] [SPEAKER_02]: and I'm like was like what if I make my persona more serious than the films are
[01:10:23] [SPEAKER_02]: right it's such a fascinating inversion
[01:10:26] [SPEAKER_02]: there's no
[01:10:27] [SPEAKER_02]: and a misunderstanding of what Alfred Hitchcock did and why it made people like him and his movies
[01:10:31] [SPEAKER_04]: yeah the tongue is not in the cheek
[01:10:32] [SPEAKER_04]: yes
[01:10:32] [SPEAKER_04]: and this movie is the perfect example even though he didn't make it you know it's the perfect example
[01:10:37] [SPEAKER_02]: that was a good point right it was worth great point putting the train back on the rail
[01:10:40] [SPEAKER_02]: I hope that everyone's still listening
[01:10:41] [SPEAKER_05]: yeah right yeah I really doubt it
[01:10:44] [SPEAKER_05]: yeah but I think let's you know let's wrap up M. Night Shyamalan any final thoughts guys
[01:10:49] [SPEAKER_05]: and I also I do want to set up I have a challenge for our listeners
[01:10:51] [SPEAKER_05]: okay great
[01:10:53] [SPEAKER_05]: so M. Night Shyamalan wrote a book guys
[01:10:57] [SPEAKER_05]: it's called I Got Schooled
[01:10:59] [SPEAKER_05]: I think we've mentioned it in the past episodes
[01:11:01] [SPEAKER_05]: I believe maybe briefly
[01:11:03] [SPEAKER_05]: yeah he wrote a book about the American educational system
[01:11:07] [SPEAKER_05]: what
[01:11:07] [SPEAKER_05]: between a non-infection book
[01:11:09] [SPEAKER_05]: yeah between a lady in the water and the happening
[01:11:12] [SPEAKER_05]: because he went to a Philly public school
[01:11:15] [SPEAKER_05]: and he was appalled by what he saw in an English class
[01:11:20] [SPEAKER_05]: he wanted to fix the education system like a lot of rich people get this idea
[01:11:22] [SPEAKER_05]: and so he wrote a book
[01:11:24] [SPEAKER_05]: and I was thinking I was gonna maybe read it as you know as my producer you know
[01:11:29] [SPEAKER_05]: yeah and just thought it'd be like a but then I started
[01:11:32] [SPEAKER_05]: characters welcome
[01:11:33] [SPEAKER_05]: oh we spun
[01:11:33] [SPEAKER_05]: yeah
[01:11:34] [SPEAKER_04]: go ahead sorry
[01:11:37] [SPEAKER_05]: so anyway
[01:11:38] [SPEAKER_05]: I decided not to do that because that's stupid
[01:11:40] [SPEAKER_05]: yeah probably really would be a huge way to waste your time
[01:11:43] [SPEAKER_05]: and fuck this guy and I've already spent way too many hours of my life watching his movies
[01:11:47] [SPEAKER_05]: but the challenges to any of the blankies out there
[01:11:50] [SPEAKER_05]: if they want to read it and give us a book report
[01:11:52] [SPEAKER_05]: we'll read it on the air
[01:11:53] [SPEAKER_04]: that is correct
[01:11:54] [SPEAKER_04]: keep it within 200 words
