The Podcast Reawakens with Emily Yoshida

Emily Yoshida (The Verge, A/V Club) joins Griffin and David to revisit Episode VII: The Force Awakens. Together, they discuss Emily’s childhood Star Wars fan fiction, an origin story based around a shared love of Beetlejuice, address the Mary Sue controversy and officially announce the podcast renaming! Also, Griffin’s merchandise corner looks at a newly issued Monopoly and presenting Producer Ben’s Sno-corner.

[00:00:23] Oh god the force just reawakened from a nap. I did a yawn to see it was a nap

[00:00:31] Yeah, do you think they'll pick up the yawn? It'll be that'll be clear one.

[00:00:35] That'll be clear.

[00:00:37] Oh what a good force.

[00:00:39] Shut up. Alright. Alright.

[00:00:41] I had a good night's force.

[00:00:42] Alright, I'm David Sims.

[00:00:43] I'm Griffin Newman. Welcome to Blank Check.

[00:00:47] We're calling ourselves Blank Check now?

[00:00:49] I think this is the moment right?

[00:00:50] You did tell me that this was the day we had to decide.

[00:00:53] 2016. It's true. Yeah. No, today is the day to decide.

[00:00:56] So our podcast is called Griffin and David Presents, but that's a stupid name. I'm explaining to our guests who have an intrusion.

[00:01:01] So we're gonna call Blank Check from now on.

[00:01:03] Blank Check with Griffin and David, colon, and then...

[00:01:06] Jesus, what the fuck is this?

[00:01:08] Alright, alright.

[00:01:09] Blank Check with Griffin and David, colon presents, colon.

[00:01:13] This is the force reawakens.

[00:01:15] Yeah, okay yeah.

[00:01:16] I know we had said we were done with the wars.

[00:01:18] We've talked over and over about how we're never gonna talk about Star Wars again.

[00:01:20] We gotta do it one more time. This is the bridging episode. This is a new podcast.

[00:01:24] This isn't a new podcast. We've already done that.

[00:01:26] It's a new year.

[00:01:27] This is not quote unquote a new podcast.

[00:01:29] This is a podcast that is new.

[00:01:31] Blank Check with Griffin and David, whole new ball game.

[00:01:34] Still talking about the same thing we talked about for the last nine months.

[00:01:37] But this is the last time.

[00:01:39] Someone, a good friend of mine, sent me a link to another Star Wars podcast.

[00:01:42] I was like, I've been really enjoying this. You might like this and I just wanted to...

[00:01:45] I never want to listen to a Star Wars podcast ever again.

[00:01:50] We have a guest. We should introduce her.

[00:01:52] We should introduce our guest.

[00:01:53] Because this is a guest we've been trying to get on for a very long time.

[00:01:55] Yeah, in that I texted her once and then she never replied to me.

[00:01:58] Oh wait, I would love to hear this other side of the story where you guys have been like tracking me down

[00:02:04] and wrangling my schedule.

[00:02:06] I totally texted her one time.

[00:02:08] We've been trying to wrangle her for years.

[00:02:10] Okay so here's my side of the story.

[00:02:12] It makes me sound great.

[00:02:13] Yeah it makes you sound very busy.

[00:02:15] Here's my side of the story.

[00:02:17] On several occasions we didn't have a guest.

[00:02:19] Griffin always does the guest because I'm, you know, lazy.

[00:02:23] I'm blessed.

[00:02:24] Yeah, oh boy.

[00:02:26] Let's not mince words.

[00:02:28] This is maybe the first guest that you yourself have booked, correct?

[00:02:32] Yeah, I like from start to finish booked this guest.

[00:02:35] You have booked friends of mine on this show.

[00:02:37] But I was the one who communicated with them.

[00:02:38] But you were the one who booked it.

[00:02:39] Yes, like I got Sonya and Pilate.

[00:02:42] Yeah, all my two friends.

[00:02:44] You're two things.

[00:02:45] Sonya and Pilate.

[00:02:46] And here's my third friend.

[00:02:48] Emily Yoshida.

[00:02:49] Emily Yoshida.

[00:02:50] Hello.

[00:02:51] Of the Verge.

[00:02:52] Entertainment editor of the Verge?

[00:02:53] I'm the entertainment editor at the Verge.com.

[00:02:55] Podcast superstar.

[00:02:56] Her podcast is the only podcast that ever moved me to tears.

[00:02:59] Really?

[00:03:00] Really?

[00:03:01] Yeah, your farewell episode.

[00:03:02] Girls in hoodies.

[00:03:03] Wow, it moved me to tears too.

[00:03:05] I had to pull over for a second.

[00:03:07] I was driving down Fort Hamilton Parkway in Brooklyn, New York

[00:03:11] and I got a little overwhelmed and I was like, oh this is really sad

[00:03:14] that I pulled over and I just took a second.

[00:03:16] Oh no, I started driving again.

[00:03:18] Very early on when we started...

[00:03:20] I never told you that?

[00:03:21] I think so.

[00:03:22] I mean it was an emotional time.

[00:03:24] A lot of tears sort of bleeding together.

[00:03:26] Yes.

[00:03:27] Very early on in the history of our podcast Emily,

[00:03:30] David told me that you had listened

[00:03:32] and was like, oh that's cool.

[00:03:34] She like listened to our podcast.

[00:03:35] Or was aware of our podcast.

[00:03:36] Yeah, yeah.

[00:03:37] I think I listened.

[00:03:38] I've listened to this podcast.

[00:03:40] Listen.

[00:03:41] Months and months ago.

[00:03:43] I was like...

[00:03:44] Well, I had exchanged texts with Emily a while back

[00:03:46] about the fact that she had written Phantom Menace.

[00:03:49] Well, you were a big Phantom Menace fan before it came out.

[00:03:52] Before it came out.

[00:03:53] Yeah, okay.

[00:03:54] You were very anticipated for it.

[00:03:56] That's a thing.

[00:03:57] I mean that's a very marked phenomenon.

[00:03:59] There are people who know a lot about Phantom Menace

[00:04:02] because...

[00:04:03] There was such a build up.

[00:04:04] I mean the same way that we know a lot about Force Awakens.

[00:04:07] I remember my dad coming home with like the Vanity Fair

[00:04:10] with the annual vote spread and all that stuff.

[00:04:12] Did you get all the premiere covers?

[00:04:14] Yes.

[00:04:15] Anyway, so we talked about how you had been really into Phantom Menace

[00:04:19] and you bragged openly about how you had written fan fiction

[00:04:22] in advance of the Phantom Menace's release

[00:04:25] about the Phantom Menace, right?

[00:04:26] I'm pretty sure.

[00:04:27] I went back on the way back

[00:04:29] machine to find out where that stuff was.

[00:04:31] Oh it's online?

[00:04:32] It's on the internet.

[00:04:33] Oh snap.

[00:04:34] You found it?

[00:04:35] I found it.

[00:04:36] Was it under a nondeplume or under...

[00:04:37] It's under a nondeplume.

[00:04:40] Can you tell us your nondeplume or is that anonymous?

[00:04:42] I wish I could because it's so good.

[00:04:45] JK Rowland.

[00:04:46] But you'll tell us off Mike.

[00:04:47] Anybody...

[00:04:48] Of course not.

[00:04:49] To find it.

[00:04:50] Can you tell us because I'm...

[00:04:52] Could you remove it or is it just...

[00:04:53] It's like too buried in the deep web?

[00:04:55] I think it's pretty buried in.

[00:04:56] In a way I'm kind of proud of it

[00:04:57] and I'm proud of the community

[00:04:59] that it was a part of.

[00:05:01] Because it was a very like prototypical online

[00:05:04] female Star Wars fan community

[00:05:06] which might narrow it down for people who are around it.

[00:05:08] Yeah in 1999.

[00:05:09] Yeah yeah.

[00:05:10] So it can't have been a ton of those.

[00:05:11] No there were not a whole lot but

[00:05:13] so I was glad to have been on that scene

[00:05:16] on that message board.

[00:05:19] And this is like one of your initial paw prints online

[00:05:21] like with all that goes.

[00:05:23] The sort of early scratchings we made on the internet.

[00:05:25] Definitely the first like message board

[00:05:27] where I had people that I knew online

[00:05:29] that were like friends.

[00:05:31] Right.

[00:05:32] Now I don't know if you know this Emily

[00:05:33] but I am quite the connoisseur of fan fiction.

[00:05:36] Yeah we've done it.

[00:05:37] We did a whole fan fiction episode once.

[00:05:39] We've done a lot of gross fan fiction.

[00:05:41] Now what nature was your fan fiction of?

[00:05:44] Which characters were they about?

[00:05:46] What kind of activities were they engaged in?

[00:05:48] Well a lot of my fanfic featured Obi-Wan Kenobi.

[00:05:52] K.E. or the Gregor.

[00:05:55] No that's Liam Neeson.

[00:05:58] No what are you talking about?

[00:06:00] My brain is exploding.

[00:06:02] I heard Qui-Gon Jinn.

[00:06:04] I heard Qui-Gon Jinn because I want to hear Qui-Gon Jinn.

[00:06:06] What is the matter with you?

[00:06:07] I'm sorry.

[00:06:08] Obi-Wan Kenobi starring you in Magrae.

[00:06:10] As young like sort of I mean how old is he?

[00:06:12] Like 20 year old.

[00:06:13] He's 27 years old when that is filmed.

[00:06:15] Right.

[00:06:16] He was very aware of the age difference at the time.

[00:06:18] Oh between you and him.

[00:06:19] Oh yeah.

[00:06:20] Had you seen Ewan in other things?

[00:06:22] Because he'd been quite an adult, quite a grown up movie actor.

[00:06:25] Yeah he was a grown up movie actor.

[00:06:27] I think as soon as I knew,

[00:06:28] as soon as I saw the first picture of him

[00:06:30] and I was like oh I have a crush on this man.

[00:06:32] I went and watched the rest like most of his filmography before

[00:06:36] Wow.

[00:06:37] The Pillar Book?

[00:06:38] I did not watch Pillar Book.

[00:06:39] I have not seen Pillar Book.

[00:06:41] I was a little bit scared of Pillar Book.

[00:06:43] But now that made me think of just how like recently

[00:06:47] there was that cover story, this is a huge digression.

[00:06:51] This cover story on Five Seconds of Summer on Langston

[00:06:54] and they talked about you know in explicit detail about their

[00:06:58] they're not a boy band.

[00:07:00] They are a trio or yeah.

[00:07:05] Quartet?

[00:07:06] Quartet of gentlemen.

[00:07:07] A band of boys one could say.

[00:07:08] Yeah with boy band.

[00:07:09] They play instruments and write catchy tunes.

[00:07:12] But anyway they were very explicit about their

[00:07:14] sexual activities.

[00:07:15] Oh oh shit.

[00:07:16] In uh...

[00:07:17] They do some Pillar Book shit?

[00:07:18] They're writing calligraphy on each other and stuff?

[00:07:21] Isn't that what happens in the country?

[00:07:23] Yeah but um, you know there were so many fans

[00:07:26] who were just like shocked to have this

[00:07:28] and sexualization of their idols.

[00:07:30] Like you know because that's why you know idols like this

[00:07:33] are safe is that they're not sexualized.

[00:07:35] Yeah and you can project much milder things onto them.

[00:07:38] But you know I saw a train spotting like...

[00:07:40] I was gonna say because I remember...

[00:07:42] I saw some silhouetted shit like...

[00:07:44] Can I say shit on this fact?

[00:07:45] Oh yeah you can say it everyone.

[00:07:46] Alright.

[00:07:47] Um, I remember I was really into trains when I was a kid.

[00:07:51] Like really to trains?

[00:07:54] You're gonna say Irving Welsh.

[00:07:56] It was really Irving Welsh.

[00:07:57] Yeah I loved Scottish dialect novels.

[00:08:00] And like you know I was like...

[00:08:02] I grew up in New York and then we moved to London

[00:08:04] but in New York like taking David on the train

[00:08:07] was like that was like what I wanted to do.

[00:08:09] I wanted to like ride the J train.

[00:08:11] And it was like 1991 so my parents were like

[00:08:13] how do we have this kid who makes us ride these

[00:08:15] like extremely scary trains?

[00:08:17] The J train of all trains.

[00:08:19] Well any train I hadn't been on I wanted to go on it.

[00:08:21] Did you ever get in a Z?

[00:08:22] Yeah I've been on a Z.

[00:08:23] The Mythic Z train?

[00:08:24] Yeah I've been on a Z.

[00:08:25] There's four each way.

[00:08:26] I could...anyway it doesn't matter.

[00:08:27] So I really liked train spotting.

[00:08:30] It's not that much about trains here.

[00:08:33] I really like trains and I remember I saw the poster

[00:08:35] for train spotting and said to my mom like

[00:08:37] what's that movie?

[00:08:38] Is it about trains?

[00:08:39] And I'm like that was 10 or 11.

[00:08:41] She was like no it's about drugs.

[00:08:44] And I was like what are drugs?

[00:08:45] Like suddenly a lot of conversations had to be had all at once.

[00:08:48] Just because of your love of trains.

[00:08:50] Yes I was like well why can't I see this movie?

[00:08:52] About trains.

[00:08:53] And she's like there's actually like I don't think there's any trains in it.

[00:08:57] But anyway train spotting I saw Life Less Ordinary,

[00:09:02] Shallow Grave, like all those Danny Boyle films.

[00:09:05] He's so good in Shallow Grave.

[00:09:06] Yeah.

[00:09:07] Oh my god.

[00:09:08] I have to...I don't really have an active crush on him anymore

[00:09:12] but it's still that like first really really big movie star crush that I ever got I think.

[00:09:16] That's fair.

[00:09:17] We're not a rider for the both of us.

[00:09:19] That was our real bonding point.

[00:09:21] I pointed out on Twitter that was our first crush.

[00:09:23] That we had both tweeted about her and was like hey are you guys friends?

[00:09:26] And then we met up at a bar.

[00:09:28] Also like are you both males between the ages of like...

[00:09:31] Yeah no shit it's not that crazy.

[00:09:32] ...through 40 or something.

[00:09:33] We both had Beetlejuice specifically but even then that's not so crazy.

[00:09:36] Yeah we said grown up Lydia Dietz was like our dream woman.

[00:09:39] Yeah.

[00:09:40] Well I don't think I said grown up Lydia Dietz.

[00:09:42] Oh I say that.

[00:09:43] I was a kid.

[00:09:44] Her and Shanae Do Connor.

[00:09:45] Shanae Do Connor was my other first celebrity crush.

[00:09:48] I was really obsessed with the Nothing Comparison video because it is intense.

[00:09:52] I was all about Femke Jensen an ex man.

[00:09:56] Sure she's cute.

[00:09:58] No she's cool like I remember thinking she was really interesting at the time.

[00:10:02] And you know what actually the movie actually does a pretty good job

[00:10:05] not making her lame and not squeezing her into any dorky outfit.

[00:10:10] Like she wears like pretty boring clothes and then she wears that sort of leather thing that they all wear.

[00:10:15] But it's zipped up they don't do the dumb look.

[00:10:17] No I was just saying like she's just kind of one of a gang.

[00:10:19] Yeah I mean all her powers are up here so she doesn't really need a whole lot of mobility or anything.

[00:10:24] Her promise her power has never been very exciting to represent visually but whatever.

[00:10:29] You know she closes the door at one point I think you know she does some stuff.

[00:10:32] Love it love her.

[00:10:33] Femke Jensen.

[00:10:34] Femke Jensen.

[00:10:35] Should I do you need to know anything more about this fanfic other than the whiz.

[00:10:39] Oh yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah.

[00:10:40] There's Obi-Wan Centric and it always featured a new character.

[00:10:45] Oh see I think this is a perfect segue.

[00:10:48] Yeah there we go.

[00:10:50] Well no another two.

[00:10:52] Okay.

[00:10:53] One was a fellow Padawan working alongside Obi-Wan as he's training Anakin.

[00:11:01] Do you remember the characters there?

[00:11:02] Oh wow so you were setting it post-Fantamanus.

[00:11:05] Yeah yeah.

[00:11:06] So even though Phantom Manus hadn't come out yet.

[00:11:08] Wow so you just knew where Phantom Manus was going to end up.

[00:11:11] Yeah I mean like I think you yeah because I don't even remember.

[00:11:16] I've gone back and read it recently but I never make it all the way to the end because

[00:11:22] I just cannot physically.

[00:11:24] It's so excruciating.

[00:11:25] Just a defense mechanism kind of locks your joints up.

[00:11:29] But you know that's very so that one that one was very much in the what they call

[00:11:35] Mary Seumold although she wasn't like exceptionally talented she was just like a person hanging out.

[00:11:41] Was she a Jedi?

[00:11:42] Yeah.

[00:11:43] Right.

[00:11:44] She was a fellow.

[00:11:45] But she was like not super special but there was a female Sith though that was super special

[00:11:49] in it and they fought each other.

[00:11:52] What was her name?

[00:11:53] Yeah are you going to tell us the names or do you want to keep those secret?

[00:11:56] Oh man I don't know can you so if you google something that's in the wayback machine

[00:12:01] I do my homework here real quick.

[00:12:03] Does it does it turn up or do you have to be on the yes Google?

[00:12:06] I think you have to go on the way back which I think it would be really hard to find it.

[00:12:09] You can't google anything hard to do that you have to be friends with Mr Peabody and Sherman.

[00:12:12] Hey now Mr Peabody and Sherman.

[00:12:15] You use the wayback machine.

[00:12:17] I've never seen that show.

[00:12:19] Oh really?

[00:12:20] I was actually I was actually watching some of it on YouTube not that long ago because

[00:12:25] I just like it came up somewhere and then I started watching it.

[00:12:28] I was like oh you still have the show and I was like hey that's very very cute.

[00:12:30] Did you see the movie?

[00:12:31] No no but I think because I was reading that people said it didn't suck.

[00:12:34] I heard it was okay.

[00:12:36] I heard it was okay that Peanuts movie came out and they were like oh this doesn't suck.

[00:12:38] It's sort of like-

[00:12:39] Much like Mr Peabody.

[00:12:40] Yeah yeah they were-

[00:12:41] But like the Peanuts movies only accomplishment was not sucking.

[00:12:43] Like it wasn't exactly like good.

[00:12:45] Yeah like aggressively doesn't suck.

[00:12:47] You're like alright guys.

[00:12:48] You positive quality.

[00:12:49] You know at no point does anyone break out into like an impromptu like whip and

[00:12:53] nae nae or whatever.

[00:12:54] You know there's nothing like that's just so excruciatingly off.

[00:12:57] The trailer really makes it seem like that's where it goes.

[00:12:59] It does.

[00:13:00] It seems like it's going to be about like there's a big concert and they all need to anyway.

[00:13:04] Well the thing I hate in the Peanuts movie I tweeted about this but that at the end

[00:13:07] credits the song there's an original song by Megan trainer that goes like oh my god

[00:13:11] I love being alive and that's like the opposite of what Peanuts is about.

[00:13:14] Peanuts is this boy wake up every morning being like I don't know how to do this anymore.

[00:13:17] Did you read that interview though with her with the-

[00:13:19] With Megan trainer?

[00:13:20] Did you read the Megan trainer interview about Peanuts?

[00:13:21] No.

[00:13:22] It was very off topic but she gave this interview there was obviously which is

[00:13:24] slate I think it was obviously just you know PR person was like please talk to Megan

[00:13:28] trainer and she was like I love Peanuts my mom had it on TV all the time when I was

[00:13:32] a kid everyone was like what on all the time like the four specials like what do you

[00:13:38] mean?

[00:13:39] There was a Peanuts chat.

[00:13:40] There's a lot.

[00:13:41] It seemed like she wasn't maybe totally sure what Peanuts was.

[00:13:45] That was pretty good.

[00:13:48] I love Peanuts I watch the Thanksgiving Day Parade every year like her entire

[00:13:52] idea is just oh that balloon he's my favorite balloon of all time.

[00:13:55] Remember those insurance commercials?

[00:13:57] Yeah right I love Peanuts the dog.

[00:13:59] Oh yeah I'm such a MetLife fan.

[00:14:01] Now you might be asking yourself what the hell is going on?

[00:14:06] That whiskey-burned baritone I just heard.

[00:14:08] Oh here we go.

[00:14:09] Jumping in with the insurance commercial.

[00:14:11] He's sitting with us.

[00:14:12] Yeah it's weird.

[00:14:13] It's off I don't like it at all.

[00:14:15] They've restructured the UCB studio as the actual studio that we record in.

[00:14:18] That's right.

[00:14:19] So Ben is going to at some point be in a separate room like it's a recording

[00:14:23] studio looking at us through a window but for now there is no window.

[00:14:26] So Ben set the levels and then it's just sitting down with us like a person.

[00:14:30] Yeah.

[00:14:31] On a mic.

[00:14:32] It's can't distract himself with equipment.

[00:14:34] I don't know what to do with myself.

[00:14:36] You can't be like looking up random like YouTube videos and like pop-up ads.

[00:14:39] Or whatever I'm doing.

[00:14:41] Whatever the hell you're doing.

[00:14:43] Loudly sighing.

[00:14:44] Well I still do that.

[00:14:45] Yeah getting mad at us when we won't stop talking about Star Wars.

[00:14:49] Our job our ostensible job Benjamin.

[00:14:52] That of course is producer Benjamin aka producer Ben aka the Ben Dooser

[00:14:55] aka producer Ben aka the Haas aka Mr. Positive aka Hello Fennel aka birthday Benny aka the Typebreaker

[00:15:01] aka the Peeper aka Ben Kenobi or whatever.

[00:15:05] I don't think we forgot another one.

[00:15:07] The Peeper you got the Peeper.

[00:15:08] I got the Peeper of course I never forget the Peeper.

[00:15:10] Is there a new Ben that's seen as there is a new Ben in Star Wars now?

[00:15:15] There's a new Ben in Star Wars.

[00:15:16] It's true Ben what did you make of that?

[00:15:18] Your name is shouted very loudly and dramatically in this film.

[00:15:21] Yeah well and he was obviously named after Ben Kenobi.

[00:15:24] Right which is a little weird.

[00:15:26] It is.

[00:15:27] It's not like Han Solo and Obi-Wan are like best pals.

[00:15:30] Also Leia and Obi-Wan he was her only hope.

[00:15:33] That's true.

[00:15:34] But even that seems to be more of a correspondence relationship.

[00:15:37] Did I tell you honestly when I heard the name?

[00:15:39] When I heard the name I was excited.

[00:15:41] You were talking about bad guy, my name, what tell ya?

[00:15:44] I wasn't actually also excited just because it wasn't dorky.

[00:15:46] Yeah.

[00:15:47] I was like okay Ben that's fine.

[00:15:48] That's a fine name.

[00:15:49] We should add Kylo Ben to the list though.

[00:15:52] Kylo Ben.

[00:15:53] Cool.

[00:15:54] Good job.

[00:15:55] So Ben at the time that we recorded our original Force Awakens episode had not seen the Force

[00:16:00] Awakens.

[00:16:01] Sure.

[00:16:02] This is about three weeks have passed since the movie came out.

[00:16:06] It actually sucked to see you.

[00:16:08] I was actually like.

[00:16:09] I'm not trying to blow up your spot but I got four different text messages from David

[00:16:13] that just said I miss you over the last three weeks.

[00:16:16] That is true.

[00:16:17] You're very sweet.

[00:16:18] You're a really good friend.

[00:16:20] I was pretty bored.

[00:16:21] I was pretty bored.

[00:16:22] Yeah.

[00:16:23] I was dog sitting most of the time.

[00:16:26] Writing original songs for my parents dog.

[00:16:28] We could have gone to see Joy and clowned on it.

[00:16:30] Oh I already saw that.

[00:16:31] Clowned on it on my own.

[00:16:32] Yeah.

[00:16:33] Have you seen Joy that way?

[00:16:34] No.

[00:16:35] It's a real piece of shit.

[00:16:36] I think there's one good act.

[00:16:37] I'd say there's one good act at a time.

[00:16:38] There is one good act.

[00:16:39] It's crazy.

[00:16:40] It's so bad and then the QVC stuff happens.

[00:16:42] You're like ooh good movie.

[00:16:43] This is a creepy movie.

[00:16:44] That's just stuff that looks great in the trailer.

[00:16:45] That's what I'm excited about.

[00:16:46] And I got to stick with this and then they just as quickly take another left turn

[00:16:50] into another stupid act.

[00:16:51] Into a worse thing.

[00:16:52] Yeah.

[00:16:53] Maybe.

[00:16:54] No how, how, because there would be saying the thing that I was not expecting

[00:16:57] and I have not seen it.

[00:16:58] Have you seen Joy yet Ben?

[00:16:59] No.

[00:17:00] I have a question though.

[00:17:01] You might want to step out of the studio and then come back.

[00:17:03] No.

[00:17:04] I don't plan on seeing it.

[00:17:05] I just want to know if they refer to microwaves as future ovens.

[00:17:07] They don't.

[00:17:08] They don't.

[00:17:09] Science oven I believe is how she calls it.

[00:17:10] That was so distracting.

[00:17:11] Wait what's your question?

[00:17:12] That's a mad men thing.

[00:17:13] Science oven isn't it?

[00:17:14] No no it's what Jennifer Lawrence says in American Hostile.

[00:17:17] Oh that's right.

[00:17:18] Stay away from the science oven or whatever I forget.

[00:17:20] American Hostile.

[00:17:21] Hostile.

[00:17:22] Oh that's the other one from the anecdote I was telling you before about being a jerk

[00:17:26] at the movie theater.

[00:17:27] Oh yeah.

[00:17:28] That you complained about the projection.

[00:17:29] Yeah it was American Hostile.

[00:17:30] We can get back to that later.

[00:17:31] But I have a question about Joy.

[00:17:33] Sure.

[00:17:34] Which is that I was expecting the main problem with this movie to be that

[00:17:38] how could you possibly believe that Chirubic face Jennifer Lawrence is a struggling mother

[00:17:44] of two?

[00:17:45] Does she have two kids in it?

[00:17:46] She has two kids.

[00:17:47] Divorce.

[00:17:48] And then everybody's like oh she's the best part of it.

[00:17:49] No she's not.

[00:17:50] That is outrageous lies.

[00:17:51] She's terribly miscast.

[00:17:53] She's very miscast.

[00:17:54] I would say she acquits herself pretty well considering how horribly miscast she is.

[00:17:58] Well that was the problem with Silver Lightning's playbook but I still feel like she overcame

[00:18:02] that in a way.

[00:18:03] She's good in that movie.

[00:18:04] I would agree.

[00:18:05] But this just seemed like a bridge too far.

[00:18:08] Griffin how could you possibly think she's good in this movie?

[00:18:10] It is such a disaster.

[00:18:11] I think the movie's not good.

[00:18:12] I think she does a really good job.

[00:18:14] I file all three Jennifer Lawrence, David O'Russell performances under one category.

[00:18:18] Which is like the best school play performances I've ever seen.

[00:18:22] Oh shade.

[00:18:23] Because in no way is she believable.

[00:18:24] No but this is why it isn't backhanded.

[00:18:26] Because in all three she's playing someone who should be played by someone a decade older

[00:18:29] than her.

[00:18:30] She is very young.

[00:18:31] She has this energy to her.

[00:18:32] You never buy her as being older than her years.

[00:18:34] But she's very present.

[00:18:35] Right and if you saw like a 15 year old giving that performance in school play

[00:18:38] you're like well obviously she's not a dad but you know they gotta cast a dad

[00:18:41] to put a mustache on her.

[00:18:42] This isn't a lie to do little.

[00:18:43] And you accept that she's a dad.

[00:18:44] But isn't that just like depressing enough to kind of take you out of there?

[00:18:47] Yes but I think they're good pieces of acting.

[00:18:49] It's just annoying that the movies make her do that.

[00:18:51] She makes no sense as like a Long Island gal.

[00:18:54] And like this is a character who's supposed to be like a real Long Island gal.

[00:18:59] The whole movie makes no fucking sense at all.

[00:19:01] The middle act's really great.

[00:19:02] Well it's the weirdest thing because I'm not a Bradley Cooper fan per se

[00:19:05] but he really does.

[00:19:06] He's like a spark plug.

[00:19:07] Yeah I've heard that he brings energy back into it.

[00:19:10] Which don't they hate each other?

[00:19:11] Doesn't that not make any sense?

[00:19:12] Maybe that's part of it.

[00:19:13] J-Law and B-Coups they don't like each other.

[00:19:15] I heard that.

[00:19:16] I keep up all my godness though.

[00:19:17] But they've made like four movies, good reward.

[00:19:19] Although she did recently say that she just filmed her first sex scene.

[00:19:22] She was giving this interview about like,

[00:19:23] Oh it was Sue O'Piaraquod.

[00:19:25] I was doing my first sex scene with Chris Pratt in upcoming movie Passengers.

[00:19:28] And everyone was like,

[00:19:29] You have like a bunch of sex scenes with Bradley Cooper and Serena.

[00:19:32] Did you just forget that movie existed?

[00:19:34] Or are you just trying to like ignore that movie?

[00:19:36] Maybe she's never seen Serena.

[00:19:37] Possible.

[00:19:38] I mean I assume she filmed these scenes.

[00:19:40] Maybe she didn't.

[00:19:41] Maybe there was a double involved.

[00:19:42] I don't know.

[00:19:43] I mean you don't even have those memories because you just go into a trance.

[00:19:46] Oh yeah, Griffin is the only working actor here.

[00:19:48] Griffin knows.

[00:19:51] Watch out, this is the year of vinyl.

[00:19:53] Griffin's in vinyl.

[00:19:54] Maybe we're a 14th.

[00:19:56] Valentine's Day.

[00:19:58] What do you do in vinyl?

[00:20:00] I get yelled at.

[00:20:01] By Ray Romano or by Bobby kind of.

[00:20:03] I can't have all in mostly.

[00:20:04] I pretty much get yelled at once in an episode.

[00:20:06] Once in an episode I say something stupid and then he yells at me.

[00:20:08] Shut the fuck up.

[00:20:09] Is he really nice in person?

[00:20:10] He's the nicest guy.

[00:20:11] He's the nicest man in the whole world.

[00:20:13] I have a really big crush on him.

[00:20:14] I kind of do too.

[00:20:15] Not in a functional way but...

[00:20:17] He's in maybe the number one celebrity relationship that I'm into right now.

[00:20:21] Maybe number one.

[00:20:22] I can't think of a challenger.

[00:20:23] 100%

[00:20:24] Right?

[00:20:25] Is he a challenger?

[00:20:26] They're also just such luscious.

[00:20:27] It's really adorable.

[00:20:28] Usually you'd see a couple like that.

[00:20:30] You'd be like oh they're doomed.

[00:20:31] Whatever, they're enabling each other.

[00:20:33] But like I don't know they look really happy.

[00:20:35] They look great.

[00:20:36] They seem like they're having a great time.

[00:20:38] Are they married?

[00:20:39] No.

[00:20:40] They're having a great time.

[00:20:41] I thought they were married.

[00:20:42] I'm pretty sure not.

[00:20:44] Somebody look this up.

[00:20:46] What are we talking about?

[00:20:47] This is a podcast about Star Wars.

[00:20:49] Yep, it's almost been probably about 20 minutes.

[00:20:51] I'm having a great time though.

[00:20:53] Oh yeah.

[00:20:54] He was married to Jenny Lumay for nine years?

[00:20:56] Yeah he had a kid with her.

[00:20:58] He's an actor now.

[00:20:59] No, they are not married Emily.

[00:21:01] They're just partners.

[00:21:02] Oh, that's why it's working you know.

[00:21:04] Might be.

[00:21:05] Emily Ashina, anti-marriage.

[00:21:08] Her son Jake Cannavale was on Broadway in Larry David play.

[00:21:12] On Fish in the Dark?

[00:21:13] Yeah, he's an actor now.

[00:21:15] There you go.

[00:21:16] He was a PA on the pilot vinyl.

[00:21:18] I mean you know.

[00:21:20] And now he's already leapfrogged.

[00:21:21] You never know.

[00:21:22] Yeah, now he's doing much better.

[00:21:23] He was the PA on the pilot vinyl and now he's already past you.

[00:21:26] He helped Tommy with the van to get into on the pilot and now he's on Broadway.

[00:21:30] Alright Star Wars.

[00:21:32] Star Wars.

[00:21:33] Do we have anything?

[00:21:34] Oh Joy, I mean I actually would like to talk a lot about Joy.

[00:21:36] I know we can't.

[00:21:37] It's a really weird movie.

[00:21:38] It's fascinating.

[00:21:39] Here's the thing that's interesting about the fact that like the movie comes alive when Bradley Cooper enters it.

[00:21:42] Bradley Cooper is almost giving a perversely low energy performance.

[00:21:46] Like his entire take on the character is be as calm and low key as possible.

[00:21:49] And a lot of pauses.

[00:21:50] And draw in attention by the fact that you're not grandstanding at all.

[00:21:53] But he's like a cate animal.

[00:21:55] You just can't keep.

[00:21:56] Well, yeah.

[00:21:57] It's really true.

[00:21:58] And them eyes bro.

[00:21:59] It's the only time she has chemistry with the character.

[00:22:03] Correct.

[00:22:04] Including like Robert De Niro.

[00:22:05] Correct.

[00:22:06] And like there's this.

[00:22:09] Oh my God.

[00:22:10] Are all those lines that are in the commercials where they're like something's got to change.

[00:22:14] Like are those actually in the movie because they sound like things that they were recorded for and at.

[00:22:18] I'm Joy by the way is not in the movie which was like the only line in the first Joy trailer.

[00:22:23] Right, right.

[00:22:24] After she pumps the shotgun.

[00:22:26] Yeah, after she shoots the shot.

[00:22:27] She does do that in the movie.

[00:22:28] Completely bizarre part of the movie.

[00:22:30] I mean to me Joy is like here's a movie where it's like guys can we all admit to each other you all need to move on.

[00:22:35] Like J-Law, stop making movies with David O Russell and with these guys go make a movie that's not where you're playing a 40 year old.

[00:22:41] Like David O Russell like what the fuck is the matter with you.

[00:22:45] Too many famous people are in your movies.

[00:22:47] Yep.

[00:22:48] You gotta come on flirting with disaster one of the greatest comedies of the 90s.

[00:22:52] Well, you know who doesn't go back to the magic baby.

[00:22:54] Do you know who doesn't need to be in Joy?

[00:22:56] Isabella Rossellini.

[00:22:57] But you know what I actually loved her though.

[00:22:59] She was like buried lead in that movie.

[00:23:01] She's in it like a whole lot.

[00:23:03] She has like a significant role.

[00:23:05] Wow.

[00:23:06] And she has this one scene where she's like I will ask you the four questions of a business and you're like what are you talking about?

[00:23:12] Can we talk about a movie that I've seen?

[00:23:15] Sorry, absolutely.

[00:23:17] So, a blank check colon with David, Griffin and David colon presents colon The Force for your Awakens.

[00:23:24] This is a podcast about passion projects right?

[00:23:28] Yeah, our podcast is about passion projects.

[00:23:30] That's what the podcast is itself.

[00:23:32] A passion project.

[00:23:33] Yeah.

[00:23:34] So that's where we get the name blank check from.

[00:23:36] It's like blank check movies.

[00:23:38] Someone's given blank check to do whatever they want.

[00:23:40] Or like the cocktail napkin pitch thing, you know?

[00:23:43] Yeah.

[00:23:44] Yeah.

[00:23:45] Just passion.

[00:23:46] And trust.

[00:23:47] Right.

[00:23:48] Massive amounts of trust.

[00:23:49] Perhaps too much.

[00:23:51] Trust is in a whole different hand while we say this so we can show how much we trust each other.

[00:23:54] He's trust.

[00:23:55] We're doing trust falls earlier.

[00:23:57] We thought we'd close the book on Star Wars.

[00:23:59] But A, I've seen it an additional time since then.

[00:24:01] You've seen it two more times.

[00:24:02] I've seen it two more times.

[00:24:03] Ben had not seen it the time of our recording.

[00:24:05] Ben, you saw it.

[00:24:06] You saw it just the one time.

[00:24:07] Yeah.

[00:24:08] Emily's seen it twice.

[00:24:09] Emily's a fresh new voice.

[00:24:10] We've never had a podcast before.

[00:24:11] It's a total of eight times.

[00:24:13] And I think there are certain regular segments that we've done when addressing other Star Wars movies

[00:24:17] like performance review.

[00:24:18] We know we did a performance review.

[00:24:19] Going over the billing order we didn't get to last time.

[00:24:21] We want to see how our thoughts have settled now that time has passed.

[00:24:23] And also more than anything, I feel like there's a lot to talk about culturally what has happened.

[00:24:27] Yeah, the reaction to this movie.

[00:24:28] Because as of today...

[00:24:29] Oh, that was the segue I was going to do.

[00:24:31] I forgot about that.

[00:24:32] But we're recording today on a Tuesday, this episode, or Wednesday.

[00:24:34] This episode will come out next Monday.

[00:24:35] But on today, Wednesday, January 6th, The Force Awakens officially became the highest-grossing film in US domestic box office history.

[00:24:43] Yeah.

[00:24:44] In Beat Avatar.

[00:24:45] Yeah.

[00:24:46] Today is the day.

[00:24:47] In Beat Avatar, like in three weeks or whatever, which is 20 days or something.

[00:24:50] 20 days, yeah, which is insane.

[00:24:51] It took Avatar, I think I read 318 days to hit.

[00:24:56] Wow.

[00:24:57] 760.

[00:24:58] Sure.

[00:24:59] And Force Awakens is going to hit in 20.

[00:25:00] It's probably going to be the first movie to make a billion dollars in one country.

[00:25:03] You think it's going to make a billion dollars?

[00:25:04] I think it is.

[00:25:05] Wow.

[00:25:06] I mean last weekend it did 90.

[00:25:07] No, I know.

[00:25:08] It's at 760 now.

[00:25:09] But you know, like Kevin Hart, you're right along twos around the corner.

[00:25:11] I know.

[00:25:12] I think, but at the very least, it's a question about whether it ends up at 900 or a billion.

[00:25:16] Okay.

[00:25:17] Anyway, it doesn't matter.

[00:25:18] It doesn't matter.

[00:25:19] I want to talk about all of this.

[00:25:20] But first, I think, did you have the segue you wanted to do?

[00:25:22] Oh well, you wrote a Mary Sue into your freaking fan fiction.

[00:25:25] Oh yeah.

[00:25:26] I mean that was, I feel like that's several controversies ago now though.

[00:25:30] It's true.

[00:25:31] It was kind of a bummer that it was the initial react.

[00:25:34] The first week of Star Wars was like 80% people just saying like, it was good or like,

[00:25:38] it's not like the first movie.

[00:25:40] Or people being like, well, Ray's skills are never explained adequately or whatever.

[00:25:46] This sort of mini controversy that erupted.

[00:25:48] I just think it's a bummer that our culture spent like a week seriously debating a point brought up by Max Landis.

[00:25:54] Who you once got into an argument with at a party.

[00:25:56] And then was forced to kiss at the same party.

[00:25:58] Have I told you this part of the story?

[00:26:00] You didn't tell me that part of the story.

[00:26:01] I got into an argument with him.

[00:26:02] We have like mutual friends.

[00:26:03] I met him once.

[00:26:04] I got into an argument with him about whether or not Iron Man 3 all took place on one day,

[00:26:09] which it does not.

[00:26:10] It does not.

[00:26:11] Empirically does not.

[00:26:12] Iron Man 3?

[00:26:13] Yeah.

[00:26:14] Iron Man 3 takes place over several days.

[00:26:15] The sun rises and sets.

[00:26:16] His argument was the film is sloppy because it all takes place on Christmas yet the sun rises and sets several times and still supposed to be on Christmas.

[00:26:23] And I said that's because it isn't all supposed to take place on Christmas.

[00:26:26] It takes place from the Christmas season.

[00:26:28] Yeah, it's a Christmas movie.

[00:26:29] And he goes watch it again and I was like no, we're really fighting about this.

[00:26:32] And everyone was like oh my god look it's like our two friends who were like moving nerds

[00:26:35] and getting into like serious conversations at parties.

[00:26:37] Because I guess we're both the people who go to parties where everyone else is trying to be chill

[00:26:40] and like get passionate about dumb whether or not Iron Man is celebrating Christmas once or five times.

[00:26:45] Like that's what we're arguing over.

[00:26:46] And they were like you guys should kiss and make up.

[00:26:48] And he was like yeah I'll do it.

[00:26:49] I don't care.

[00:26:50] And I was like well I'm not gonna now not kiss him and look like I lose.

[00:26:54] So I kissed Max Landis.

[00:26:56] I'm sorry.

[00:26:57] That's a bummer.

[00:26:58] At a party after he made one of my favorite Iron Man movies.

[00:27:02] It's the best Iron Man movie.

[00:27:03] It's only when I fully like.

[00:27:04] Wait you guys are insane.

[00:27:05] It's the best Iron Man movie.

[00:27:06] We'll have you back on as a guest when we do podcast man three.

[00:27:08] Oh my god.

[00:27:10] Because that's happening.

[00:27:11] Iron podcast three?

[00:27:12] Blank check with Griffin and David present.

[00:27:15] Are you guys actually going to talk about Blank check?

[00:27:18] We love the movie Blank check.

[00:27:20] I think we have to get there at some point.

[00:27:21] And we would love to revisit that.

[00:27:23] I'm glad you love it with Tom Locke is the guy we love.

[00:27:25] Tom Locke is the one person I remember in that movie.

[00:27:27] MTV VJ Kennedy.

[00:27:28] Yeah I know.

[00:27:29] But I just remember Tom Locke.

[00:27:30] Anyway.

[00:27:31] So Max Landis.

[00:27:33] Let's talk about the Mary suit thing.

[00:27:34] We don't have to go for a long time.

[00:27:35] No no.

[00:27:36] What does Emily want to say?

[00:27:37] There are many controversies here that we should talk about.

[00:27:38] No I'm not going to talk about Max Landis anymore.

[00:27:40] I feel like Max Landis is sort of like our era's Andy Dick.

[00:27:45] Like everybody has a story.

[00:27:47] Not in the same crazy on drugs way.

[00:27:50] He's just sort of around.

[00:27:52] Yeah and everybody has had an encounter that they will not

[00:27:55] seem to forget.

[00:27:56] You make yourself visible.

[00:27:57] Definitely.

[00:27:58] Good for him.

[00:27:59] I think we need to see more like children of directors.

[00:28:04] Like see them you know like I want to.

[00:28:06] Visibility is important.

[00:28:08] It's the kind of representation you want on media right now.

[00:28:11] Yeah.

[00:28:12] It's visibility for second generation filmmakers.

[00:28:16] Anyway I'm not going to throw anybody under the bus here.

[00:28:19] Great guy.

[00:28:20] He was a decent kisser.

[00:28:22] All right.

[00:28:23] Shut up.

[00:28:24] All right.

[00:28:25] Let's move on.

[00:28:26] The Mary suit.

[00:28:27] The Mary suit thing was a bit of a bummer.

[00:28:28] Yeah it's a bummer.

[00:28:29] It's also I would say that well I don't know.

[00:28:33] I mean I edited one of the more visible pieces.

[00:28:36] Great piece by Tasha.

[00:28:37] Anti that and I felt a great amount of conflict before we

[00:28:42] ran it.

[00:28:43] Well should we actually like this is bubbling up right now.

[00:28:47] This is not a thing.

[00:28:49] Oh right that you're like almost shedding too much light on.

[00:28:52] Right.

[00:28:53] Why are we giving this credit but then it's less like no this is

[00:28:56] going to be pretty easy to just like kill in one fell soup.

[00:28:59] The points are out there ready to be made like that are clearly

[00:29:03] like it's not even it's not even that she's not a Mary suit by

[00:29:06] whatever those definitions and it's just the character.

[00:29:10] It's a great character.

[00:29:11] It seemed to be the complaint seemed to be like yeah yeah.

[00:29:14] Emily's not as into the character.

[00:29:16] What are you into the character.

[00:29:17] No I'm into the character.

[00:29:18] Yeah no I was saying yeah I was saying like yeah.

[00:29:21] Yeah yeah yeah yeah.

[00:29:22] I guess Mary suit the definition of the rough definition just

[00:29:26] for anyone who doesn't know is sort of this idea of like a

[00:29:29] sort of fan fiction character how you would want to get

[00:29:32] across to like perfect it like you know all around like

[00:29:37] no or like the movie ends with them doing something that's

[00:29:40] crucial like where it's like the only way we can like stop

[00:29:43] this bomb is if someone can play pac-man really well and like

[00:29:46] do what I just like so much sci-fi like anything that's not

[00:29:49] hard sci-fi is that the special boy with powers that need

[00:29:53] to be awakened.

[00:29:54] Yeah that's yeah well that's a great point of the Tasha

[00:29:57] Robinson piece she was just like yeah that's also every

[00:30:00] male character in like every sci-fi and action we ever

[00:30:02] that's what we like in these movies.

[00:30:03] Then you know the Internet gets bogged down and like

[00:30:05] well Luke Skywalker is a much more flawed character and

[00:30:08] like everyone's very irritating.

[00:30:10] Who cares fuck you it's Star Wars I had fun.

[00:30:12] Okay here's one I want to talk about okay.

[00:30:16] Yes this is one that I feel like is now bubbling up at the

[00:30:19] time we're recording this has been the hashtag wears Ray

[00:30:23] controversy about that.

[00:30:25] About the representation in merchandise.

[00:30:27] Well you saw the explanation right is that like they

[00:30:30] wanted to keep it secret that she is as big of a

[00:30:32] character as she is which is interesting I would love to

[00:30:36] unpack that I've had barely any time to think about that

[00:30:39] really.

[00:30:40] There is some truth to the fact that it was kind of kept

[00:30:42] from us in the marketing that she was going to be the

[00:30:45] Jedi the lead.

[00:30:46] Very deliberate and it was consistent throughout the

[00:30:48] entire marketing thing.

[00:30:49] She's in the marketing obviously and she's right you

[00:30:52] know the biggest thing on the poster and so on and

[00:30:54] so forth but.

[00:30:55] They really played up the image of Finn holding the

[00:30:57] lightsaber to throw everyone off their scent and

[00:30:59] even that like Lego piece that not the Lego piece

[00:31:01] the monopoly piece.

[00:31:02] Yeah that everyone's upset about.

[00:31:03] He's got a lightsaber?

[00:31:04] Yes there's this complaint that there's not enough

[00:31:06] Ray merchandise out there and there's a lot more thin

[00:31:08] than the other male characters.

[00:31:09] The two big things that everyone has pointed out

[00:31:11] merchandise is a bit of a specialty for me Emily so

[00:31:14] this is going to function as a merchandise spotlight

[00:31:16] for this episode.

[00:31:17] Go right ahead.

[00:31:18] Because I have a lot of thoughts on this controversy

[00:31:19] a lot of people talking about it.

[00:31:20] Go right ahead.

[00:31:21] Fucking tracking the merch the way that I am on

[00:31:23] the floor.

[00:31:24] Hustling every day watching that merch.

[00:31:26] The monopoly and then there was this image people

[00:31:28] kept sharing of like five characters in a box

[00:31:30] but I was like surely there's other boxes I don't

[00:31:32] know.

[00:31:33] Ready to address both of these things?

[00:31:34] I mean I don't care.

[00:31:35] There are I care a lot.

[00:31:36] Yeah I know.

[00:31:37] Not cut and dry answers but I just want to throw

[00:31:39] out some facts that I don't think are being

[00:31:41] recognized in this conversation okay.

[00:31:43] So it's a monopoly game comes with only four

[00:31:45] pieces right of who you can play as.

[00:31:47] Wait why are there only four pieces of monopoly

[00:31:49] has like eight things?

[00:31:50] Exactly what is that?

[00:31:51] Exactly it has like spinning wheels and

[00:31:53] making dogs and hats and stuff.

[00:31:55] And that's never granted like maybe this

[00:31:57] is a correction because that's way too many

[00:31:59] things but not that many people are playing

[00:32:01] monopoly at one time.

[00:32:02] That's true.

[00:32:03] Who sits down for an eight player monopoly game?

[00:32:05] Why it's nice to have a choice sometimes you're

[00:32:07] feeling like a thimble sometimes you're

[00:32:09] really like 100% percent.

[00:32:10] Sometimes I would put the hat on the dog

[00:32:12] and play as the dog wearing a hat.

[00:32:13] Yeah but you're a god damn lunatic Dave

[00:32:14] I don't even know that.

[00:32:15] I'm out of control.

[00:32:16] You're out of your god damn mind.

[00:32:17] It only has four pieces which is lunacy.

[00:32:19] A sims level of lunacy in and of itself right.

[00:32:22] Are they just being cheap are they like

[00:32:24] pewter pieces because I had like the

[00:32:26] classic trilogy monopoly and those are

[00:32:28] like those are pretty nice.

[00:32:29] Nice pewter pieces.

[00:32:30] Is it four though or do they give you six?

[00:32:32] No they give me like six or eight or something.

[00:32:33] You have like Han, Luke, Leia, Darth.

[00:32:35] This is they're like larger and they're

[00:32:38] like painted they're not just like metal

[00:32:40] or maybe they are metal but they're

[00:32:41] painted like they look more accurate

[00:32:42] than the little metal ones.

[00:32:43] They're like D&D pieces or something.

[00:32:44] Yeah they look like little like sort of

[00:32:46] like model like tabletop pieces.

[00:32:48] Gotcha.

[00:32:49] There's only four.

[00:32:50] It's Luke, Darth, Kylo Ren and Finn.

[00:32:53] Right pretty well Darth Vader not in this movie.

[00:32:55] So is this.

[00:32:56] But it's young Luke too.

[00:32:57] It's like Fran Boy Luke.

[00:32:58] So is this new Star Wars like a new

[00:33:01] general all-purpose Star Wars monopoly

[00:33:03] or is this Force Awakens monopoly?

[00:33:05] I believe this is Star Wars monopoly.

[00:33:07] This is a new Star Wars monopoly

[00:33:08] incorporating force.

[00:33:09] So it's got like Jakku but it's also

[00:33:11] got Dagobah or whatever.

[00:33:13] Right exactly you know and like it has

[00:33:15] fucking Naboo and whatever you know.

[00:33:17] Does it have the Hosniin system?

[00:33:19] Oh yeah.

[00:33:20] I think I don't know exactly what the

[00:33:21] was that with Jail.

[00:33:22] Can we talk about the Hosniin system

[00:33:23] for a second?

[00:33:24] Absolutely.

[00:33:25] Oh why?

[00:33:26] Because of course.

[00:33:27] This is what you wanted to get to.

[00:33:29] Oh yeah.

[00:33:30] Yeah that was the shout out.

[00:33:31] Ben point number one.

[00:33:32] Ben point number one.

[00:33:33] Very excited.

[00:33:34] Wow.

[00:33:35] Your name was represented twice in this movie.

[00:33:37] What's your middle name?

[00:33:38] Is your middle name like Ray or Ben

[00:33:40] or Poe or Dameron or what?

[00:33:42] No it's McCormick.

[00:33:43] Oh alright.

[00:33:44] That's fine.

[00:33:45] But the main villain of this film

[00:33:46] is named Ben Kylo Ben.

[00:33:48] Right.

[00:33:49] Ben McCormick.

[00:33:50] Yeah go ahead sorry.

[00:33:51] And then the haas we call you

[00:33:52] the haas and there's the Hosniin system.

[00:33:53] It's true.

[00:33:54] Yeah.

[00:33:55] So did anybody, because I remember

[00:33:57] being very upset after this.

[00:33:59] Actually so the main death that

[00:34:01] happens in this movie didn't hit me

[00:34:03] emotionally.

[00:34:04] It was very emotional when I thought

[00:34:06] the Coruscant had destroyed.

[00:34:07] You thought Coruscant had destroyed.

[00:34:08] I was very upset about that.

[00:34:10] Coruscant, a planet we've talked

[00:34:11] about quite a lot on this podcast

[00:34:13] because you know I don't know if

[00:34:14] you know this Emily.

[00:34:15] The computer closed.

[00:34:17] David just closed his laptop.

[00:34:19] The whole planet, the whole planet

[00:34:21] of Coruscant's a city.

[00:34:22] The whole planet's a city.

[00:34:23] How do you even like

[00:34:25] district that?

[00:34:26] We've had a lot of discussion over

[00:34:27] how that could possibly work.

[00:34:29] Yeah also.

[00:34:30] It's all turned inside parking work.

[00:34:31] Does it like get to the southern hemisphere?

[00:34:34] We're going to the north this time.

[00:34:36] Also I just want to bring it back

[00:34:38] to my fanfic, the most important part

[00:34:40] of this.

[00:34:41] Please was it set on Coruscant?

[00:34:43] My other one, my more experimental

[00:34:45] fanfic was set on Coruscant.

[00:34:47] Whoa wait.

[00:34:48] In what I call the lower Coruscant.

[00:34:50] Yeah alright.

[00:34:51] Which is the lower levels of it.

[00:34:53] It was some Blade Runner shit.

[00:34:55] And it had a Mary Sue who did not

[00:34:58] have the force and I thought that was

[00:34:59] super super.

[00:35:00] So she was just like a bandit?

[00:35:01] She was just a bandit.

[00:35:02] More of a Hunts solo type.

[00:35:03] Yeah yeah yeah.

[00:35:04] Like and it's very very expressly

[00:35:05] like deterrent, like she did not

[00:35:06] have the force.

[00:35:07] Did she want the force?

[00:35:08] She's just an idiot.

[00:35:09] Everyone got the force.

[00:35:11] No she's just a good fighter.

[00:35:13] Cool.

[00:35:14] So this was set like among the

[00:35:15] scum and villainy of like

[00:35:17] because I mean it is crazy how

[00:35:18] the prequels like the most

[00:35:20] they do that is just that one.

[00:35:22] The bar scene.

[00:35:23] The bar scene, yeah.

[00:35:24] And even that's like not like

[00:35:26] they should have gone into the

[00:35:27] death.

[00:35:28] Like I'm very, that's actually

[00:35:30] I feel like the biggest loss of

[00:35:31] those movies is that Coruscant

[00:35:33] from the moment that you see

[00:35:35] Coruscant in the special edition

[00:35:37] of Jedi.

[00:35:38] Sure.

[00:35:39] I was immediately transferred.

[00:35:40] Yeah what is this?

[00:35:41] Because I was like this was

[00:35:42] also before I saw Blade Runner

[00:35:44] and any cyberpunk stuff and I

[00:35:45] was like oh like a city

[00:35:47] in space like a super

[00:35:49] super futuristic thing like

[00:35:51] that seems like my shit.

[00:35:52] And then I got into that stuff

[00:35:54] but like that seemed like the

[00:35:55] biggest missed opportunity in

[00:35:57] those prequels like spending

[00:35:58] for spending so much time on

[00:35:59] clearly the best planet.

[00:36:01] They spend a lot of time there

[00:36:02] and they do and mostly they

[00:36:03] hang out in like hotel rooms

[00:36:05] and balconies and stuff like

[00:36:06] way up at the top or the Jedi

[00:36:08] Temple away from the pain

[00:36:09] and suffering how they have such

[00:36:11] nice apartment.

[00:36:12] We have talked about it so

[00:36:13] much.

[00:36:14] All right we talked about how

[00:36:15] Darth City is and Darth Maul

[00:36:16] appear to have like a very

[00:36:17] nice apartment with a balcony

[00:36:19] where they chat.

[00:36:20] They just share it together.

[00:36:21] And then of course

[00:36:22] Anakin and Padme have like a

[00:36:23] fucking palace.

[00:36:24] And they just like sit

[00:36:25] like she's just around her crystal.

[00:36:26] It has like 80 couches.

[00:36:28] Yeah the biggest living room I've

[00:36:29] ever seen.

[00:36:30] It has a helicopter landing pad

[00:36:31] practically for a balcony.

[00:36:33] It's so big.

[00:36:34] Like you could land the

[00:36:35] freaking Death Star on that

[00:36:36] thing.

[00:36:37] Yes you could.

[00:36:38] Yes you could.

[00:36:39] And like I mean we see

[00:36:41] Emily should have been on this

[00:36:42] podcast the whole time.

[00:36:43] You should be on the episode.

[00:36:44] Emily you talked so much about

[00:36:45] the thing that you're going to

[00:36:46] have to do is you can take some

[00:36:47] of it.

[00:36:48] Can I throw out two quick side

[00:36:49] bars of things for someone

[00:36:50] now?

[00:36:51] Well the thing is Karsten

[00:36:52] is actually not destroyed in

[00:36:53] the movie.

[00:36:54] It turns out it's Hosni and

[00:36:55] Prime.

[00:36:56] Which I just...

[00:36:57] They do say it.

[00:36:58] Very serious.

[00:36:59] Very serious.

[00:37:00] Very excited.

[00:37:01] A retconning is that the

[00:37:02] right term for this because

[00:37:03] it was so confusing and it

[00:37:04] was such a way to like

[00:37:05] have something that looks

[00:37:06] like Karsten getting

[00:37:07] destroyed happen but it's

[00:37:08] not that like it could have

[00:37:09] been you know it could have

[00:37:10] been something more like

[00:37:11] Alderaan which is supposed to

[00:37:12] be like not quite as

[00:37:13] urban.

[00:37:14] Well Alderaan has been blown up

[00:37:15] though.

[00:37:16] I know but it didn't need to

[00:37:17] be the same city and planet

[00:37:18] thing.

[00:37:19] No I agree.

[00:37:20] It was confusing and also like

[00:37:22] I sifted through all the other

[00:37:23] shit you know all the stuff

[00:37:24] they put out and apparently

[00:37:25] like the idea is the senate

[00:37:26] moves every year or whatever

[00:37:28] and like okay...

[00:37:30] No but not every year I think

[00:37:31] they do that because of like

[00:37:32] after the battle or whatever

[00:37:34] like after they defeat the

[00:37:35] empire they move.

[00:37:36] So you can't pin them down

[00:37:37] they just score their mail

[00:37:38] to a different place so

[00:37:39] people it takes them a little

[00:37:40] to find them.

[00:37:41] Can I throw out two quick

[00:37:42] things?

[00:37:43] Sure you just go right ahead

[00:37:44] and throw out two quick things.

[00:37:45] Okay on the topic of what we're

[00:37:46] talking about.

[00:37:47] Thing one.

[00:37:48] Boom.

[00:37:49] Before he sold Lucas from

[00:37:50] off to Disney George Lucas was

[00:37:51] in development on he had

[00:37:53] apparently written like 70

[00:37:55] scripts or not himself written

[00:37:57] but commissioned 70 scripts

[00:37:59] for what was going to be an

[00:38:00] hour long live action

[00:38:01] Star Wars TV show called

[00:38:03] Star Wars Underworld and

[00:38:04] the entire idea was I want to

[00:38:06] make like a TVMA CD

[00:38:08] underbelly of Star Wars

[00:38:09] criminals, bars stuff like

[00:38:10] that.

[00:38:11] Uh huh.

[00:38:12] It probably wouldn't have been

[00:38:13] executed well but it's a cool

[00:38:14] idea that I hope they would

[00:38:15] just sit now.

[00:38:16] Second thing is

[00:38:17] They've talked about it.

[00:38:18] They say those scripts like

[00:38:19] exist.

[00:38:20] They exist.

[00:38:21] Like they have that raw

[00:38:22] material.

[00:38:23] Probably take a lot of work to

[00:38:24] make them good.

[00:38:25] A lot of work.

[00:38:26] But I want a show like that

[00:38:27] sounds real cool.

[00:38:28] It'd be on Netflix.

[00:38:29] Also I mean I don't

[00:38:30] it's not going to be like a

[00:38:31] hard art or anything but

[00:38:32] Rogue One does sound a

[00:38:33] little like that.

[00:38:34] Sure.

[00:38:35] Rogue One the upcoming

[00:38:36] 2016 Star Wars entry.

[00:38:37] It sounds like it's mostly

[00:38:38] like non-power shooting

[00:38:39] criminals.

[00:38:40] Here's what I want from

[00:38:41] the movie.

[00:38:42] Relax for space battles.

[00:38:43] I want to be in space.

[00:38:44] It does have space battles but

[00:38:45] they are maybe the least

[00:38:46] interesting.

[00:38:47] They're not very arresting.

[00:38:48] I kind of like the first

[00:38:49] TIE Fighter escape scene.

[00:38:50] That's fun.

[00:38:51] But that's not a space battle.

[00:38:52] No.

[00:38:53] That's within

[00:38:54] in the atmosphere.

[00:38:55] It's true.

[00:38:56] It's as good as you get.

[00:38:57] You at least see the blackness

[00:38:58] of space.

[00:38:59] No that is the best.

[00:39:00] Actually I feel like

[00:39:01] that's the best action

[00:39:02] sequence of the whole movie.

[00:39:03] I think the falcon scene is

[00:39:04] the best.

[00:39:05] Yeah the first one when

[00:39:06] they escape.

[00:39:07] No no I'm talking about the

[00:39:08] TIE Fighter.

[00:39:09] Escape scene Emily.

[00:39:10] When Poe and Finn escape from

[00:39:11] the Star Destroyer.

[00:39:12] That's your...

[00:39:13] No I'm not saying it's my

[00:39:14] favorite.

[00:39:15] It's in space.

[00:39:16] That's my second favorite.

[00:39:17] Oh yeah yeah.

[00:39:18] That's actual space battle.

[00:39:19] Yeah.

[00:39:20] Right.

[00:39:21] The Millennium Falcon Unjaku is

[00:39:22] my favorite.

[00:39:23] Yeah the Millenium Falcon

[00:39:24] Unjaku is my favorite.

[00:39:25] Yeah that's the one where

[00:39:26] it really feels like it's

[00:39:27] clicking and like

[00:39:28] there's a lot of momentum.

[00:39:29] Woo yeah here we go.

[00:39:30] Here we go.

[00:39:31] That's our character beats

[00:39:32] they're fun.

[00:39:33] Yeah.

[00:39:34] Point two.

[00:39:35] Art of the...

[00:39:36] Point one was just

[00:39:37] the Star Wars Underworld

[00:39:38] series.

[00:39:39] Oh sure.

[00:39:40] I just wanted to bring up two

[00:39:41] points based off of what we

[00:39:42] were talking about.

[00:39:43] You said Rogue One.

[00:39:44] Our love of CD criminal stuff

[00:39:45] in Star Wars.

[00:39:46] Point two is there's an Art

[00:39:47] of Star Wars book that just

[00:39:48] came out.

[00:39:49] Sure.

[00:39:50] Which is very interesting

[00:39:51] because they threw a lot of

[00:39:52] shit at the wall.

[00:39:53] There was the point in time

[00:39:54] where J. Drums got hired.

[00:39:56] Michael Arndt had written a

[00:39:57] script.

[00:39:58] They didn't like it.

[00:39:59] So they were like nine

[00:40:00] months out from needing to

[00:40:01] film.

[00:40:02] He and Lawrence Kasin decide

[00:40:03] they were pretty much going

[00:40:04] to start from scratch but

[00:40:05] they already need to start

[00:40:06] building stuff so he just

[00:40:07] went to like their art

[00:40:08] department and was like,

[00:40:09] hey just start designing stuff

[00:40:10] you think would be cool in a

[00:40:11] Star Wars movie.

[00:40:12] And sometimes they'd look at

[00:40:13] the design and be like,

[00:40:14] oh we'll write that in.

[00:40:15] Right.

[00:40:16] Like Captain Phasma who was

[00:40:17] barely written in.

[00:40:18] Someone drew that and he was

[00:40:19] like, oh that's an interesting

[00:40:20] idea for a character.

[00:40:21] We'll put her in.

[00:40:22] Stuff like that.

[00:40:23] Make it out of metal.

[00:40:24] The Art of Star Wars book is

[00:40:27] more interesting than most

[00:40:28] art books because they were

[00:40:29] also letting the Art

[00:40:30] Department guys...

[00:40:31] This isn't the visual

[00:40:32] dictionary.

[00:40:33] This is the Art of Star Wars.

[00:40:34] Yeah this is like the coffee

[00:40:35] table.

[00:40:36] Emily, give it to me.

[00:40:37] I love this book.

[00:40:38] Okay great I need somebody

[00:40:39] to give it to me.

[00:40:40] Wait Emily what about giving

[00:40:41] it to me?

[00:40:42] I should have just brought it

[00:40:43] with me.

[00:40:44] He blew it.

[00:40:45] He should give it to Ben.

[00:40:46] He's the nicest because he

[00:40:47] didn't ask for it.

[00:40:48] Yeah, yeah.

[00:40:49] It's like some kingly

[00:40:50] or shit here.

[00:40:51] Also I had a galaxy named

[00:40:52] after me and it's gone.

[00:40:53] It was just a solar system.

[00:40:54] Oh sorry whatever.

[00:40:55] No it's quite alright.

[00:40:56] There is in this book several

[00:40:57] pages about they've

[00:40:58] considered creating a new

[00:40:59] planet for the movie.

[00:41:00] One of my gripes of the

[00:41:01] movie and it's a movie I do

[00:41:02] like a lot.

[00:41:03] You think I've turned to

[00:41:04] the dark side.

[00:41:05] I've downgraded my opinion a

[00:41:06] little bit but I still like it

[00:41:07] a lot.

[00:41:08] I think it's very fun fucking.

[00:41:09] I was more amped up about that

[00:41:10] two weeks ago.

[00:41:11] I know.

[00:41:12] Now I'm kind of missing it.

[00:41:13] And you start to wet now?

[00:41:14] I was really into the movie

[00:41:15] and I was just like,

[00:41:16] I was in that sort of kidmo

[00:41:17] where I'm like I just like

[00:41:18] Star Wars.

[00:41:19] I just like Star Wars.

[00:41:20] I like Star Wars.

[00:41:21] And I didn't like another

[00:41:22] TV show beyond and I just

[00:41:23] sort of be like this isn't

[00:41:24] Star Wars.

[00:41:25] I'm not like a Star Wars

[00:41:26] thing to happen right now.

[00:41:27] That's why I went back and

[00:41:28] watched the prequels because

[00:41:29] I was like let's think about

[00:41:30] Star Wars somewhere.

[00:41:31] I had already done that a

[00:41:32] lot.

[00:41:33] Yeah.

[00:41:34] No I didn't want to do it.

[00:41:35] I purposefully did not do it.

[00:41:37] Yeah.

[00:41:38] But uh...

[00:41:39] I saw the second time I started

[00:41:41] considering certain things and David

[00:41:42] I'm not sure if I liked it

[00:41:43] and I was just like...

[00:41:44] No I said I liked it a lot

[00:41:45] I'm not sure if I love it.

[00:41:46] That was my...

[00:41:47] We had a nice special

[00:41:48] experience where we started to

[00:41:49] We had a great time watching it.

[00:41:50] In the artist Star Wars book

[00:41:51] this is the point I wanted

[00:41:52] to say in the artist Star Wars

[00:41:53] book there was like a couple

[00:41:54] pages devoted to a certain

[00:41:55] point that were considering

[00:41:56] a planet wasn't written in

[00:41:57] the script but they were

[00:41:58] like maybe go here.

[00:41:59] One of my gripes with the

[00:42:00] movie is that like all the

[00:42:01] new plans we go to are

[00:42:02] pretty much carbon copies of

[00:42:03] like the housing system looks

[00:42:05] like Coruscant, Jakku is

[00:42:06] essentially just tattooing with

[00:42:07] a new name.

[00:42:08] What's the new other one that

[00:42:09] looks like Gavin?

[00:42:10] I don't even know what to call

[00:42:11] but Mads, Canadians, whatever it's

[00:42:12] called.

[00:42:13] All of them look like...

[00:42:15] And the Starkiller base looks

[00:42:17] like Hoth when they're on the

[00:42:18] planet.

[00:42:19] It looks like Hoth when they're

[00:42:20] on the base.

[00:42:21] So there are trees.

[00:42:22] The one thing that's kind of

[00:42:23] cool is the planet Lucheson

[00:42:24] planet.

[00:42:25] No that's the one really

[00:42:26] new thing.

[00:42:27] They found a nice location to

[00:42:28] shoot at.

[00:42:29] Yeah, Michael and I are one.

[00:42:30] They had considered...

[00:42:31] Takodana, that's her planet.

[00:42:32] The one where Mads cannot

[00:42:33] is.

[00:42:34] What's it called?

[00:42:35] Takodana.

[00:42:36] See I've totally missed that

[00:42:37] and I've seen it twice now

[00:42:38] and I usually try really hard

[00:42:39] to pitch.

[00:42:40] It's the one where they land

[00:42:41] and raise like I've never seen

[00:42:42] so much green in Harrison.

[00:42:43] I mean Han gives her this

[00:42:44] like...

[00:42:45] Sorry.

[00:42:46] We're gonna bring them

[00:42:47] mood down kids.

[00:42:48] I don't know where it would

[00:42:49] have been in the story if

[00:42:50] it was a thing that just

[00:42:51] guys started drawing and

[00:42:52] then they were like,

[00:42:53] no we're not gonna write

[00:42:54] that into the story.

[00:42:55] So I'm gonna go ahead and

[00:42:56] go ahead and do the

[00:42:57] drawing.

[00:42:58] And then they were like,

[00:42:59] no we're not gonna write that

[00:43:00] into the script.

[00:43:01] But there are several pages in

[00:43:02] this book devoted to the idea

[00:43:03] of name feels like a place

[00:43:05] holder.

[00:43:06] A planet called Crime City.

[00:43:08] Probably a place holder.

[00:43:10] Yeah.

[00:43:11] Crime City makes no sense

[00:43:12] cause it's a planet,

[00:43:13] not a city.

[00:43:14] Agree.

[00:43:15] Hence a place holder.

[00:43:16] Is it all one word?

[00:43:17] Crime City.

[00:43:18] Crime City.

[00:43:19] It was two words.

[00:43:20] It was...

[00:43:21] If it was Crime City

[00:43:22] that'd be awesome.

[00:43:23] If it was Crime City

[00:43:24] or even if it was like

[00:43:25] Chime City.

[00:43:26] And there would be in the

[00:43:27] trivia section it would be

[00:43:28] like, Crime City actually

[00:43:29] if you put a space there

[00:43:30] it's just this crime.

[00:43:31] My favorite I to be trivia fact

[00:43:32] of all time is on the

[00:43:35] trivia page for Batman Forever.

[00:43:37] It says, Nicole Kimman's

[00:43:38] character's name of Dr. Chase

[00:43:40] Meridian is an allusion to

[00:43:41] the fact that women are

[00:43:42] always chasing after Batman.

[00:43:44] What is it really?

[00:43:46] Are they?

[00:43:47] Are we chasing after Batman?

[00:43:49] It's not really like

[00:43:51] you're like, oh you know

[00:43:52] Batman dresses like a bat.

[00:43:53] Women are always chasing him

[00:43:54] around.

[00:43:55] Like that's not really like

[00:43:57] where the hell does Meridian come from?

[00:43:59] I think they called her that

[00:44:00] because it was a cool name

[00:44:01] and some guy sat there and went

[00:44:02] like...

[00:44:03] It is such a 90s name

[00:44:04] Chase Meridian and she's a psychiatrist.

[00:44:05] It's such a like 90s character.

[00:44:06] She sounds like Chase Meridian PI

[00:44:08] works in Crime City.

[00:44:10] That's also literally the only

[00:44:11] movie where the woman is chasing

[00:44:13] after Batman.

[00:44:14] That's the one where she's

[00:44:15] like, that's the plot of

[00:44:16] she's like...

[00:44:17] I know Batman Forever is weird

[00:44:18] because it is about a woman who

[00:44:19] like really wants to fuck Batman.

[00:44:20] Like not Bruce Wayne.

[00:44:21] No, she's got like a big

[00:44:22] Batman series.

[00:44:23] Yeah.

[00:44:24] Like she comes up to Batman

[00:44:25] and she's like, you are wearing a

[00:44:26] rubber suit and I like that.

[00:44:28] And he's like...

[00:44:29] And there's that weird part where

[00:44:30] she fucks a five year old boy on

[00:44:31] Halloween because he's wearing a

[00:44:32] Batman costume.

[00:44:33] Do you remember that scene?

[00:44:34] Griffin, I'm not into this.

[00:44:35] In Batman Forever?

[00:44:36] It's a weird...

[00:44:37] It's very Schumacher in.

[00:44:39] I remember when I saw

[00:44:40] Batman Forever I was like nine

[00:44:42] and I still didn't think that

[00:44:43] people could kiss on screen

[00:44:44] unless they were married.

[00:44:45] Well, I'm not feeling...

[00:44:46] Right, that's how people kiss.

[00:44:47] I just thought that that was

[00:44:48] only something that married

[00:44:49] people could do so I thought

[00:44:50] that whenever people kissed on

[00:44:51] screen who were not married

[00:44:52] it was some sort of like

[00:44:53] special effect that was...

[00:44:54] And like I wasn't seeing a lot of

[00:44:55] movies where people were kissing

[00:44:56] I think because I was a kid.

[00:44:57] But Batman has like making out

[00:44:58] scenes and I was just like

[00:44:59] how did they do this?

[00:45:00] This looks really real.

[00:45:01] Rick Baker had to make

[00:45:02] Rick Baker had to make

[00:45:03] prosthetic tongues for this

[00:45:04] scene.

[00:45:05] Yeah, it was like a trick

[00:45:06] photography.

[00:45:07] Like silicone legs.

[00:45:08] Yeah.

[00:45:09] Crime City.

[00:45:10] Looks cool.

[00:45:11] It's a different vibe was

[00:45:12] like really low life beaten

[00:45:13] down stars.

[00:45:14] If I can just finish up

[00:45:15] this toy thing.

[00:45:16] That's merchandise spotlight.

[00:45:17] We got on the like 17

[00:45:18] spotlight.

[00:45:19] We got a 17-size

[00:45:20] thing.

[00:45:21] We got a 17-size

[00:45:23] sidebar.

[00:45:24] Who?

[00:45:25] Malpy said only has four

[00:45:26] characters.

[00:45:27] How do you get back of this?

[00:45:28] It's impossible.

[00:45:29] We have like fans.

[00:45:30] People like tweeted us

[00:45:31] and they're like you forgot to

[00:45:32] talk about that thing

[00:45:33] you were saying about Harry

[00:45:34] Potter.

[00:45:35] Oh my God.

[00:45:36] But they always say that

[00:45:37] because they like listening to

[00:45:38] this which is still insanity.

[00:45:39] It doesn't make any sense.

[00:45:40] Insanity.

[00:45:41] Respect your fans.

[00:45:42] I love them.

[00:45:43] We don't have a name for

[00:45:44] them.

[00:45:45] Well they were calling

[00:45:46] themselves present heads.

[00:45:47] I think now they're

[00:45:48] blank checkers.

[00:45:49] They're blankies.

[00:45:50] Emily was named our fan.

[00:45:51] So just treat at Emily

[00:45:53] Ashida.

[00:45:54] Hashtag blankies.

[00:45:55] And then post a picture of you

[00:45:56] with a blankie.

[00:45:57] Perfect.

[00:45:58] And a thumb in your mouth.

[00:45:59] Like a cute little baby.

[00:46:00] Or maybe fan art of me and

[00:46:01] you with a...

[00:46:02] Anyway, let's do it.

[00:46:03] Make a blankie

[00:46:04] and stitch our faces on to

[00:46:05] them.

[00:46:06] What's your point about the

[00:46:07] fucking toys?

[00:46:08] There are only four characters.

[00:46:09] If there was like eight and

[00:46:10] Bray was not one of them

[00:46:11] I'd be like absolute bullsh**.

[00:46:12] Clear sexism.

[00:46:13] In this case it's like

[00:46:14] hero villain, hero villain.

[00:46:15] And I do think there's

[00:46:16] something to the fact that

[00:46:17] I think it's some degree

[00:46:18] to cover up.

[00:46:19] I'm not into this.

[00:46:20] You really think you can make

[00:46:21] room...

[00:46:22] I'm sorry, I'm sorry.

[00:46:23] There could be a fucking

[00:46:24] great character.

[00:46:25] How is there room for Kylo Ren?

[00:46:28] That's a room for like

[00:46:29] Darth Vader.

[00:46:30] Hero villain.

[00:46:31] No, no, no, no.

[00:46:32] This is what I want to say.

[00:46:33] This is what I want to say.

[00:46:34] This is the big point I want

[00:46:35] to make, okay?

[00:46:36] The argument for Hasbro's

[00:46:37] point of like we were

[00:46:38] saving until after the movie

[00:46:39] comes out which I think

[00:46:40] is a little bit of ass

[00:46:41] covering.

[00:46:42] A little bit.

[00:46:43] Here's my one counterpoint

[00:46:44] to it.

[00:46:45] Griffin.

[00:46:46] The other thing they

[00:46:47] didn't release at all

[00:46:48] on any platform.

[00:46:49] That's true.

[00:46:50] There were no Han Solo's.

[00:46:51] Weird.

[00:46:52] Which is another

[00:46:53] thing they want to see.

[00:46:54] They didn't have like an old

[00:46:55] Han Solo.

[00:46:56] Came out after the movie came

[00:46:57] out.

[00:46:58] They have like one with

[00:46:59] a hole in his chest now

[00:47:00] just so you can

[00:47:01] come out after

[00:47:02] the blue light.

[00:47:03] He comes with catwalk!

[00:47:04] What is he doing

[00:47:05] on that catwalk?

[00:47:06] Hugging his son.

[00:47:07] No, I mean...

[00:47:08] It's where you go

[00:47:09] and you wanna find

[00:47:10] your Dad.

[00:47:11] You go to a catwalk.

[00:47:12] I know, it's fine.

[00:47:13] It's just like, I wish

[00:47:14] there was like...it'd be

[00:47:15] funny if he was like,

[00:47:16] you know, there's

[00:47:17] Like he's like twiddling, sitting up.

[00:47:19] That's the one email station they have.

[00:47:20] They good wifi there?

[00:47:23] No, no, no, no, no, no.

[00:47:23] Okay, so, hero villain, hero villain is not a good point

[00:47:27] because there is not a good-

[00:47:28] Well, the monopoly says dumb.

[00:47:29] I'm not defending the monopoly, sir.

[00:47:30] There's not, that's not,

[00:47:31] that does not reflect of the demographics

[00:47:35] of the Star Wars universe.

[00:47:36] It should probably be like one villain and three heroes.

[00:47:39] Also like how is, if there's not room for Rey,

[00:47:41] fine, she's new to the Limit and One movie,

[00:47:43] how is there not room for Leia?

[00:47:45] I agree.

[00:47:46] Not for an expansion pack or something probably.

[00:47:48] Well, they said they're refreshing it

[00:47:50] and the next version's gonna come out

[00:47:51] with Rey instead of Finn.

[00:47:53] I could have just also, also all of these,

[00:47:57] but this is the thing about not wanting to spoil Rey

[00:47:59] being such a big character.

[00:48:01] Like, cause obviously we don't know

[00:48:02] how big a character Finn is either.

[00:48:04] But I think that was the big switch.

[00:48:06] This is how we were sent her out with her,

[00:48:07] send it out with her, stick.

[00:48:08] Yeah, she's got-

[00:48:09] I'm gonna send out the lightsaber later.

[00:48:10] The stick's cool.

[00:48:11] Well, this is the thing I would like to say.

[00:48:13] Rey's my favorite character in the new movie.

[00:48:15] I've been desperately trying to find any sort of Rey toy.

[00:48:18] There are like 15 that have been produced.

[00:48:20] All of them are the most difficult ones to find.

[00:48:22] They get sold out.

[00:48:23] Right, cause like people want them?

[00:48:25] I mean, yeah.

[00:48:26] But there's a thing where like-

[00:48:27] I consider buying the little Lego of her ship

[00:48:30] because it's like only 20 bucks.

[00:48:32] With the speeder, with her little bike.

[00:48:33] It's very cute.

[00:48:34] Yeah, really cute.

[00:48:35] That's like the one that you can still sort of find.

[00:48:37] Sure.

[00:48:38] They didn't produce enough to meet demand.

[00:48:40] I think they underproduced Rey

[00:48:42] and to make matters worse,

[00:48:43] most versions of Rey were packaged with BB-8.

[00:48:45] So it's the two best characters in one package.

[00:48:47] And you just can't get them.

[00:48:48] Impossible to find.

[00:48:49] Those are the two best characters.

[00:48:50] Yeah.

[00:48:51] Y'all have the Sphero.

[00:48:53] Oh, I got that Sphero.

[00:48:55] Uh-huh, uh-huh.

[00:48:56] I'm all about that Sphero.

[00:48:58] It's pretty good.

[00:48:58] Yeah.

[00:48:59] Do you have one?

[00:49:00] It's impossible to use, but it is so cute.

[00:49:02] It is so cute.

[00:49:03] It's the best.

[00:49:05] Ben's just giving us the time.

[00:49:06] He's just telling us how long we're recording.

[00:49:07] There are a couple cases of like boxes

[00:49:09] and multiple characters that they've left Rey out of

[00:49:11] that I think are pretty egregious and inexcusable.

[00:49:13] But I think a lot of people have looked at and gone like,

[00:49:14] oh, there's no Rey merchandise,

[00:49:16] which there is, they just haven't produced enough

[00:49:19] and it's really hard to find.

[00:49:20] It's a case of everyone being wrong

[00:49:21] and everyone being right at the same time.

[00:49:22] Sure.

[00:49:23] I want to say, but I see a lot of people glossing over

[00:49:24] and going like, oh, they didn't make anything.

[00:49:26] They made stuff not enough.

[00:49:28] Couple of the exclusions were gross.

[00:49:29] They're fucked up.

[00:49:30] I also, if you find Rey toys,

[00:49:31] please send them to me.

[00:49:33] Griffin, David, present at gmail.com.

[00:49:35] Email me a toy.

[00:49:36] Oh, we're gonna have to update the email.

[00:49:38] No, I think hold on to the old email for a while.

[00:49:40] Let's update it.

[00:49:40] Really, let's update it.

[00:49:41] I saw some very cute fan art.

[00:49:44] I'm usually like, actually the cuteness is the thing

[00:49:47] that's getting to me the most about Force Awakens.

[00:49:49] Like the cuteness factor between Rey

[00:49:51] and which makes me just,

[00:49:52] I have warm fuzzies about Rey anyway

[00:49:54] because of the nature of that character.

[00:49:56] And the Po and Finn thing.

[00:49:57] People ship in Po and Finn.

[00:49:58] It's a very sweet movie.

[00:50:00] It's like much, and not in a way that I hate.

[00:50:03] Like I think there's a lot of ways that could be bad

[00:50:05] but I saw, I have to find that.

[00:50:08] I think it's sweet.

[00:50:08] It's a movie about friends.

[00:50:09] I think I fit the Han Solo death scene actually.

[00:50:11] One of the reasons it worked for me,

[00:50:12] I mean, heartless people apparently didn't.

[00:50:15] I like the movie a lot.

[00:50:17] No, I know, I know, okay.

[00:50:19] That's fantastic.

[00:50:21] Is that adorable?

[00:50:21] This is a Bill Waterston themed piece of art.

[00:50:24] It looks like Calvin and Hobbes but it's Rey and BB-8.

[00:50:27] It's great.

[00:50:28] This is a new segment called Emily's Fan Art Corner.

[00:50:30] Emily's Fan Art Section.

[00:50:31] And Emily describes Fan Art.

[00:50:32] Who's the artist of that?

[00:50:34] Oh, who is the artist of this?

[00:50:36] Brian Kessinger.

[00:50:40] Good job, Brian.

[00:50:41] It's on Instagram.

[00:50:42] His name is B-R-I-A-N Kessinger.

[00:50:44] Hey, E-S-I-N-G-E-R.

[00:50:47] And it's like, yeah, Rey and BB-8 and a sled

[00:50:50] going down a mountain.

[00:50:51] Well then they're a little piece of a tie fighter trash.

[00:50:55] Right, the thing she uses to like...

[00:50:56] I love that part.

[00:50:57] But you know, where was the scene that showed us

[00:50:58] like how she learned how to rappel

[00:51:01] and like how to like sled?

[00:51:02] Like there should have been all these scenes

[00:51:03] to explain all these skills she had.

[00:51:04] Also outrageous.

[00:51:05] That scene where Rey and I go out to dinner

[00:51:07] and just have like a really nice conversation.

[00:51:08] That part, no, but it is in my movie, Dave.

[00:51:11] I just like...

[00:51:12] I wanna marry Steve myself into the movie.

[00:51:14] They are very childish, both of them, Rey and Finn.

[00:51:17] Like I love the idea that Finn's like a newborn

[00:51:19] in this movie.

[00:51:20] I also read that both of them are supposed to be 19.

[00:51:23] They're supposed to be 19 years old, yeah.

[00:51:24] And that she is, she's kind of like a child,

[00:51:26] like in a way.

[00:51:27] Like in the, I mean, she's like a tougher child.

[00:51:29] She's like arrested her development

[00:51:31] and is still waiting for her parents.

[00:51:33] Right.

[00:51:34] And I think one of her best little notes

[00:51:36] is right at the beginning when she puts the helmet on.

[00:51:38] Cause I was talking to my friend about this movie

[00:51:39] and he was saying the first time he saw it,

[00:51:40] he was a little confused by Rey because he's like,

[00:51:42] she just keeps getting like sucked into a thing.

[00:51:45] It's like someone sort of comes along

[00:51:46] and she gets wrapped up in it and it's like...

[00:51:48] Oh, you mean like what happens in Star Wars movies?

[00:51:50] No, I know.

[00:51:51] But then he was...

[00:51:51] And so...

[00:51:52] He felt like a little confused

[00:51:53] and then he saw it a second time

[00:51:55] and he had like not really noticed the helmet scene.

[00:51:57] He's like, of course, right?

[00:51:58] She wants to get out there.

[00:52:00] You know, she wants to...

[00:52:01] And her version of looking at the two sunsets.

[00:52:03] Yeah, she's got the little doll.

[00:52:04] She's got like a weird little rebel alliance.

[00:52:06] Like a pilot doll.

[00:52:08] A little X-wing pilot.

[00:52:09] And she totally is studied up on her lore.

[00:52:11] Oh, totally. That's the thing.

[00:52:12] That's actually one of my favorite parts

[00:52:13] is that she knows Han Solo as the smuggler,

[00:52:15] her famous smuggler.

[00:52:16] We talked about that before.

[00:52:17] Isn't that great when...

[00:52:18] It's very, very nice.

[00:52:19] And that he's like the...

[00:52:21] You mean the rebel general who I hate.

[00:52:23] Bleh!

[00:52:24] His brainwashing.

[00:52:26] I was talking about that with...

[00:52:28] Like I have like a dumb take which is like...

[00:52:30] They're all like fans, right?

[00:52:31] Like Rey's like a fan who like learned all the languages

[00:52:33] and learned how everything works.

[00:52:35] And like she's really into all the details of it.

[00:52:37] And like Kylo Ren is like the fan who's like,

[00:52:40] it has to be exactly like I want it to be.

[00:52:42] And like Darth Vader is so cool!

[00:52:45] And then Finn is the one who's like,

[00:52:46] I don't know what any of this really is,

[00:52:49] but it's really delightful.

[00:52:50] Like I'm really into it.

[00:52:52] She's the new fan.

[00:52:54] Finn's the new fan.

[00:52:54] And she's trying to fan them late.

[00:52:55] Wow, like look at all this stuff.

[00:52:57] Yeah, he's learning about it

[00:52:58] and getting excited at the same time.

[00:53:00] So there you go, here's my hot take.

[00:53:01] See if I was a freelance director

[00:53:02] I'd be pitching that take around.

[00:53:03] Now can I ask you guys,

[00:53:04] since we...

[00:53:05] You've all seen the movie twice now

[00:53:07] and I remember from the last episode

[00:53:09] you had mentioned it not being clear

[00:53:12] why there was the New Republic and the Separatists.

[00:53:14] Yeah, it's not clear in the movie.

[00:53:16] It's still not clear.

[00:53:17] No, it's been explained I guess online

[00:53:19] but it's not clear in the movie at all.

[00:53:20] They apparently shot all of that stuff.

[00:53:22] And some of the books that have come out

[00:53:23] not just like the like, you know,

[00:53:25] side story books but like novelization

[00:53:28] and some of the like children's adaptations

[00:53:29] that are supposed to be representing scenes from the movie

[00:53:31] include pieces that went into that more in depth.

[00:53:34] There was supposed to be I think a whole scene

[00:53:35] on the Hosniin system with

[00:53:37] there's a woman who you see who's framed at the center

[00:53:40] when she's about to die on that like balcony.

[00:53:43] And she's an actress, Maisie Williams.

[00:53:45] Oh yeah, right.

[00:53:46] She's like done some work when they cast her

[00:53:47] there was sort of an announcement

[00:53:48] and then she appears like for one second.

[00:53:50] Wait, just not Maisie Williams of Game of Thrones.

[00:53:52] Maybe Maisie Williams just...

[00:53:53] Maisie cellar Richardson or something like that.

[00:53:55] Yeah, yeah.

[00:53:57] I think her name is Maisie cellar.

[00:53:59] It's definitely Maisie something or something like that.

[00:54:01] Maisie Richardson cellars.

[00:54:02] I was flipped pretty good.

[00:54:05] But yeah, she was in the originals.

[00:54:08] CW's hit Vampire Naira's.

[00:54:09] Oh, I thought you meant the original Star Wars.

[00:54:11] She was in the original Star Wars movies.

[00:54:12] I know the originals also.

[00:54:15] And that's about it but she was in those

[00:54:17] she had recurring part 14 episodes in the originals

[00:54:20] and she's in the upcoming of Kings and Prophets

[00:54:23] which is an ABC series based on the Bible.

[00:54:26] Oh, good source material.

[00:54:28] Yeah, no, I hear it's a gripping read.

[00:54:30] Good book, good book.

[00:54:31] I told you my story about my friend.

[00:54:33] I'm gonna give myself negative 10 comedy points for that one.

[00:54:35] I told you my story about my boyfriend.

[00:54:37] Did I tell you?

[00:54:38] No, I was telling pilot,

[00:54:38] I had a friend who was from Kurdistan

[00:54:40] and he knew nothing of Christian mythology

[00:54:44] and he saw the passion of the Christ in theaters.

[00:54:47] And what he said to him was like,

[00:54:50] did you know about that movie?

[00:54:52] I mean, did you know that story?

[00:54:53] Like they beat the shit out of him.

[00:54:56] Like reference point really for it.

[00:54:58] That's amazing.

[00:54:59] He was like, it's good story.

[00:55:02] That would be such a good episode

[00:55:04] if we were still doing no bits bits.

[00:55:07] If we did 10 episodes deconstructing the passion

[00:55:10] of the Christ as if we never read the Bible.

[00:55:12] That's just an original word.

[00:55:13] I do not want to watch that movie.

[00:55:14] I don't either.

[00:55:15] It's really okay.

[00:55:17] Wait, what were we talking about?

[00:55:18] So we finished talking about toys.

[00:55:20] Oh right, done with toys.

[00:55:22] So the Republic with the first order

[00:55:25] and how they're said it's unclear.

[00:55:26] That was cut out.

[00:55:27] This is a thing that people have been talking about a lot.

[00:55:29] And this is, I have more sort of problem,

[00:55:32] but I'm more interested in this than you are.

[00:55:35] You sort of don't care David.

[00:55:36] I'd love to hear how you feel about this, Emily.

[00:55:38] I think there's very clearly like 40 minutes

[00:55:40] cut out of this movie.

[00:55:41] And not just like scenes trimmed

[00:55:43] but like entire like sequences.

[00:55:45] Abram says 20.

[00:55:47] I know.

[00:55:48] I mean he might be lying.

[00:55:49] That's a couple of scenes.

[00:55:50] Yeah.

[00:55:51] I think there's no way that Poe wasn't supposed

[00:55:53] to appear at all between when the TIE fighter crashes

[00:55:56] and when he shows up back on Mas Canada's plan,

[00:55:59] which I already forgot the name of.

[00:56:00] Takodana.

[00:56:01] Takodana.

[00:56:02] Taco Bell.

[00:56:02] Just because he's a guy who's so obsessed with moments

[00:56:05] and those like big payoff moments

[00:56:07] and when they cut to Poe in the X-Wing,

[00:56:09] it's just kind of like, oh here's Poe again.

[00:56:10] Yeah, yeah.

[00:56:11] It doesn't quite hit in the same way as like,

[00:56:13] oh there's the little poppy note of the song.

[00:56:15] Right.

[00:56:16] If they wanted you to actually believe.

[00:56:18] Popular scenes.

[00:56:21] Good scene.

[00:56:21] They want us to actually believe that he was dead

[00:56:24] for that section of the movie.

[00:56:26] A, I don't think the first image they ever put out of Poe

[00:56:28] in the first teaser trailer would have been him

[00:56:31] in the flight suit in his X-Wing flying.

[00:56:34] No, I get what you're saying.

[00:56:35] I just, I don't know, I don't really care.

[00:56:37] I wanted to get-

[00:56:38] I want to ask for Isaac as I can get.

[00:56:39] I don't get that much of it.

[00:56:40] I think it works.

[00:56:41] I like his return.

[00:56:41] I think that's fun.

[00:56:42] I like the X-Wings on the water and stuff

[00:56:45] and the music kind of picks up.

[00:56:46] And I'm actually grateful even though like,

[00:56:48] you think of Star Wars as being three characters

[00:56:50] that are hanging out together,

[00:56:51] but I do like that there's enough time

[00:56:54] for Finn and Rey to hang out

[00:56:56] and just have an established dynamic

[00:56:58] without having like a bunch of characters thrown in.

[00:57:00] I mean, like Han and Churri are there,

[00:57:01] but it's mostly about them.

[00:57:02] I like that a lot too.

[00:57:04] I would have liked to have seen whatever Poe was doing.

[00:57:06] And there are a couple things like that.

[00:57:07] He's just getting back to the-

[00:57:08] I don't need like explanations.

[00:57:10] I don't need like-

[00:57:11] In-giffing.

[00:57:11] In-giffing.

[00:57:12] He's making fun of me again.

[00:57:13] He said he was over this.

[00:57:14] And now he's making fun of me

[00:57:15] and my voice with a really accurate impression.

[00:57:19] And they're gone all-

[00:57:20] Sorry, go on, go on, go on.

[00:57:21] No, I just-

[00:57:22] The movie moves really fast.

[00:57:23] It moves a very fast clip.

[00:57:24] Yeah.

[00:57:25] It's very fun.

[00:57:26] It keeps the ball in there.

[00:57:27] Up until a certain point.

[00:57:28] What's the point where it sort of gets molasses?

[00:57:30] That's not what you-

[00:57:31] Taco Donna, talk about?

[00:57:32] No, well kind of, but I like-

[00:57:34] I like Mos Canada enough.

[00:57:36] Second act does lag though.

[00:57:37] But the stupid scene that should have been deleted

[00:57:41] with the stupid monsters on the stupid Han-

[00:57:43] Yeah.

[00:57:44] I mean that scene-

[00:57:45] Like that was so unnecessary.

[00:57:46] You could make a clean cut.

[00:57:47] It screamed as like-

[00:57:49] And you see it in Marvel movies a lot.

[00:57:50] You've seen a lot of these words.

[00:57:51] They were just like,

[00:57:52] we need another action.

[00:57:53] Yeah.

[00:57:54] You know, like we need-

[00:57:55] Like they're just literally looking like an energy

[00:57:57] like reed of the movie.

[00:57:58] Yeah, it's been 10 minutes.

[00:57:59] We need something to do.

[00:58:00] Well and that's-

[00:58:01] I think that's just about where the trash shoot monster

[00:58:02] would have been in New Hope.

[00:58:04] Which is the slowest part of New Hope for sure.

[00:58:07] But it's also like we've just met back up

[00:58:09] with our great old friend Han Solo.

[00:58:11] We just want to spend time with him

[00:58:12] and then immediately we have to deal with some monsters.

[00:58:14] Like let's keep just talking about-

[00:58:15] And I also, I see the point and maybe of the-

[00:58:17] like it may have been like a Larry Kasen idea or whatever.

[00:58:19] We're like we need Han to be doing like smuggler business.

[00:58:22] We need like a whole smuggler thing to happen.

[00:58:24] Yeah.

[00:58:25] And here he is.

[00:58:26] He's talking to the guys from the raid

[00:58:27] and he's talking to the guys from lockout

[00:58:29] or whatever, the Scottish guys you know.

[00:58:31] And like locked out, whatever.

[00:58:33] Yeah, lockout was called lockout.

[00:58:34] That movie's good.

[00:58:35] With Guy Pierce?

[00:58:36] Yeah, I like that movie a lot.

[00:58:37] Have you seen that movie?

[00:58:38] No, I haven't.

[00:58:39] It's like escape from New York in space

[00:58:40] and Guy Pierce plays like her Russell.

[00:58:41] It's really fun.

[00:58:42] It's a good movie.

[00:58:43] Yeah.

[00:58:44] Anyway, let's move on.

[00:58:46] We'll do a podcast about that.

[00:58:47] Anyway, so I bet it's a fair.

[00:58:48] Like your complaint is fair, the-

[00:58:50] Emily, I'm pointing at Emily.

[00:58:51] Yeah.

[00:58:52] This is a podcast nobody can see.

[00:58:54] The tentacle monster scene is just kind of shitty.

[00:58:57] No, and it looks bad too.

[00:58:58] It does look like last minute.

[00:58:59] It doesn't look like they spent very much time

[00:59:01] rendering those tentacles.

[00:59:02] And I watched it and I was like,

[00:59:04] oh this must be where poor Harrison Ford broke his leg

[00:59:06] because there-

[00:59:07] No question.

[00:59:08] Because doors are closing left and right.

[00:59:09] Yeah.

[00:59:10] What if it wasn't?

[00:59:11] What if it was just like the door to the cafeteria?

[00:59:13] What if they were like-

[00:59:15] Did you hear the story that the door closed on his leg

[00:59:17] and Abrams just ran on set, very nice of him,

[00:59:20] and tried to lift it off of him?

[00:59:22] And sprained his leg.

[00:59:23] And it was a hydraulic door so Abrams like,

[00:59:25] yeah, broke a backbone.

[00:59:26] Yeah, he was wearing a hidden cast under his shirt

[00:59:31] for the whole shoot because otherwise they would have

[00:59:33] tried to fire him, not fire him but put him on

[00:59:35] medical leave or whatever.

[00:59:36] I did think it's funny.

[00:59:37] I don't know if it was a conscious joke,

[00:59:39] but the end of that stupid tentacle chase scene

[00:59:42] is Ray defeating the monster by closing his legs in a door.

[00:59:46] Yeah, I know.

[00:59:47] I mean it can't be a joke.

[00:59:48] Or is it like a Spider-Man 2 thing where he does my back?

[00:59:51] Maybe.

[00:59:52] Yeah, I like that.

[00:59:53] Remember that?

[00:59:54] And his reference to the fire?

[00:59:55] Trying to get more money?

[00:59:56] Trying to get that salary scurilla?

[00:59:58] I just think J.J. Abrams is like a very good magician,

[01:00:01] you know?

[01:00:02] Like his main thing is like getting your attention

[01:00:04] working you in, you were able to overlook-

[01:00:06] I think he's good at pacing a movie in a way

[01:00:09] kind of Christopher Nolan can do it too,

[01:00:11] where it's like you just don't think about it too hard.

[01:00:13] Right, exactly.

[01:00:14] And you just sort of-

[01:00:15] A musician that I am a mutual follower is worth on Twitter

[01:00:18] described him as an AI of a young fresh director.

[01:00:24] Like basically a program written to make it feel

[01:00:27] like a young hot Hollywood, like Colin Trivorrow type.

[01:00:31] He's got a trim and he's got glasses and a haircut.

[01:00:34] Yeah, but not even a look just like how movies his movies feel.

[01:00:37] It's just like, yeah this makes sense.

[01:00:39] Like no argument here, it's functional.

[01:00:41] I prefer him to Colin Trivorrow though, as do you.

[01:00:43] Well yeah, considering that Colin Trivorrow is one of my

[01:00:46] two least favorite human beings of all time.

[01:00:48] Here's the other one.

[01:00:49] My dad.

[01:00:50] That's not true.

[01:00:51] I had to come up with a joke really quickly.

[01:00:52] As I said too, I knew you were going to say that

[01:00:54] I love my dad.

[01:00:55] I was struggling to think-

[01:00:56] We are in the UCV headquarter.

[01:00:57] I was struggling to think of someone else

[01:00:59] that wasn't an offensive joke.

[01:01:01] I threw my dad under the bus.

[01:01:02] I'm sorry, Peter.

[01:01:03] Anyway, we don't know that Colin Trivorrow.

[01:01:04] The biggest bummer about the Horse Awakens is that

[01:01:06] Colin Trivorrow is directing Episode 9.

[01:01:08] Yeah, I feel like that's kind of like-

[01:01:11] Say it, say it.

[01:01:13] Come on Emily, no one listens to this.

[01:01:14] Kind of like the next World Cup being in Qatar.

[01:01:17] Oh, totally!

[01:01:19] Yeah, where you're like, Jesus.

[01:01:21] That's not-

[01:01:22] We're going to be bummed out about this later.

[01:01:24] You're going to run into some problems.

[01:01:26] Sorry, John.

[01:01:27] You know, I know Ryan Johnson's-

[01:01:29] I keep saying it myself, Ryan Johnson's writing Episode 9

[01:01:31] as if I know Episode 8's going to be good.

[01:01:34] Like, it might be a piece of shit.

[01:01:36] I don't know.

[01:01:37] I also would say, I mean we got a lot of time.

[01:01:39] Colin Trivorrow could get fired between now and then.

[01:01:41] Tax evasion, that's my thing, baby.

[01:01:42] He's going to get arrested for tax evasion.

[01:01:43] Let's get on that.

[01:01:44] Yeah.

[01:01:45] So we started doing the research.

[01:01:46] Yeah, yeah, so let's start digging.

[01:01:48] We're going through his trash.

[01:01:49] Well you pitched on Twitter-

[01:01:50] What was it?

[01:01:51] A movie-

[01:01:52] A kickstart for a movie about us trying to stop him

[01:01:54] from making Episode 9

[01:01:55] and then someone pointed out that the brilliant third actress

[01:01:57] would be that you betray me when Colin gives you

[01:01:59] a part in the movie.

[01:02:00] Which would be really good.

[01:02:02] And then I'm on my own.

[01:02:03] I want to know who you guys would either have do 9.

[01:02:05] Like, knowing nothing obviously.

[01:02:06] We don't know where it's going to be going.

[01:02:08] But imagine that it is like similar-

[01:02:10] It has a similar place as Jedi.

[01:02:12] Griffin was trying to be real like, you know,

[01:02:14] gung-ho and like trying to find a female director,

[01:02:17] it seemed, right?

[01:02:18] You- on Twitter.

[01:02:19] I forgot who you suggested her name.

[01:02:20] I can't remember who that was.

[01:02:21] I really like Jennifer Kent.

[01:02:22] I want Jennifer Kent to do everything.

[01:02:23] Jennifer Kent's cool.

[01:02:24] She made the Baba Duke.

[01:02:25] I think she's so great.

[01:02:26] Yeah.

[01:02:27] I just said Brad Bird.

[01:02:28] Brad Bird is my number one pick.

[01:02:29] Yeah, Brad Bird is my number one pick.

[01:02:31] Because I just think he's the best director of action alive,

[01:02:34] in my opinion.

[01:02:35] So Jigar Abrams mentioned recently that he had met with

[01:02:38] Ava DuVernay and she's apparently a really big Star Wars fan.

[01:02:42] And it's like, oh then you should give her a Star Wars movie.

[01:02:45] If she likes Star Wars, let her make a Star Wars movie.

[01:02:48] Maybe you should make a movie.

[01:02:49] That's my opinion.

[01:02:50] I like her making movies.

[01:02:51] Do we have this conversation in MOU?

[01:02:53] I forget.

[01:02:54] I was talking about this with someone where I was like,

[01:02:56] I really just want her to make a movie.

[01:02:57] I think she's going to make a movie.

[01:02:59] I'm really glad that she's not making the Black Panther movie.

[01:03:02] Me too.

[01:03:03] I agree.

[01:03:04] I'm smart.

[01:03:05] There's something just inherently so insulting about people being like,

[01:03:08] wait, why wouldn't you want that job?

[01:03:09] Like it's a Marvel movie.

[01:03:10] No, some people don't.

[01:03:12] It's a tough one.

[01:03:13] You said as a measure of success.

[01:03:15] And like, this thing goes for Star Wars too.

[01:03:17] If she totally didn't want to do a Star Wars movie,

[01:03:19] that'd be cool.

[01:03:20] But I feel like a Star Wars spin off,

[01:03:22] one of these like, quote, Star Wars stories movies

[01:03:24] would give her a lot more freedom than any Marvel movie would.

[01:03:27] Marvel movies are the toughest.

[01:03:29] Yeah, because they all have to line up with each other perfectly.

[01:03:32] The favorite dover and I had an idea for like,

[01:03:34] here's a thing set in the Star Wars universe.

[01:03:36] Obviously Disney is going to be micromanaging to a degree

[01:03:38] because it costs a lot of money.

[01:03:40] But it also like,

[01:03:41] it wouldn't have the ability to crumble the entire house of cards

[01:03:45] if it didn't work.

[01:03:46] So she could do whatever her...

[01:03:47] Who do you want Emily?

[01:03:48] Who's your pick?

[01:03:49] I don't know.

[01:03:50] I was just trying to think because I hadn't actually thought about it

[01:03:52] I mean, I just tried to think of directors I like

[01:03:54] who I've seen like sort of work on a big scale or whatever

[01:03:57] and enjoyed their work.

[01:03:58] Brad Bird's always the one that comes to mind

[01:04:00] but there are others.

[01:04:01] I have to change my choice actually.

[01:04:02] Walt Becker.

[01:04:04] No, because you haven't seen Road Ship yet, have you?

[01:04:07] I haven't seen Almond Ship Monks for the Road Ship.

[01:04:09] This guy I'm telling you is no tour.

[01:04:10] He repeats the same themes.

[01:04:12] There's a thematic obsession with people getting hit in the testicles.

[01:04:16] The films are constantly a comedy of manners

[01:04:18] of people being misidentified as other things.

[01:04:20] And the old dogs, their dads are people think they're grandpa's.

[01:04:22] Now when the chipmunks, everyone thinks they're rats.

[01:04:25] What else does he like?

[01:04:26] People being mean, human ugliness.

[01:04:28] Who would be good?

[01:04:30] It's hard.

[01:04:33] You know what looks bad?

[01:04:34] Go ahead.

[01:04:35] I was really good at that.

[01:04:40] Because otherwise I would be like, would you be Justin Lin?

[01:04:42] I love Justin Lin.

[01:04:43] That guy bats a thousand for me.

[01:04:45] Who is the new X-Men looks good?

[01:04:47] No, it looks terrible.

[01:04:49] Do you like it because it has a big guy?

[01:04:51] Wait, do you like it because the apocalypse is big?

[01:04:54] Ben, come on.

[01:04:55] I agree with you.

[01:04:57] I think it looks fun.

[01:04:59] It looks cool.

[01:05:00] Looks cool.

[01:05:01] I like the 80s.

[01:05:02] He's a big bad guy.

[01:05:03] And it's Oscar Isaac who played Poe Dameron in this movie.

[01:05:06] No way.

[01:05:07] Yeah man.

[01:05:08] Ben, we should talk about Snoke.

[01:05:10] You have a notebook full of ideas.

[01:05:12] Ben has a notebook.

[01:05:13] Snoke is the worst.

[01:05:14] This is called Ben's Snow Corner.

[01:05:15] Ben's Snow Corner.

[01:05:16] Ben's Snow Corner.

[01:05:17] Ben's Snow Corner.

[01:05:18] Yes.

[01:05:19] No snoking.

[01:05:20] I've been saying for a while that I really want a big Jedi or bad guy character because

[01:05:27] I'm tired of these little guys.

[01:05:28] And he means big.

[01:05:29] He means big inside.

[01:05:31] Because it's like the less it is, don't underestimate the little guy.

[01:05:34] Fuck that.

[01:05:35] How long have you been waiting for this?

[01:05:37] A long time.

[01:05:38] At least two and a half months.

[01:05:40] For a while.

[01:05:41] I've been very vocal about it.

[01:05:42] I'll say this Emily, every time he brings the subject up he words it exactly the

[01:05:46] same way.

[01:05:47] Like it's a recording.

[01:05:48] He's not taking out a tape.

[01:05:49] And yet every time I find it funnier than the last time.

[01:05:51] He's not changed the meter in which he says it.

[01:05:53] It's the exact same complaint.

[01:05:55] I'm going to go on his side for a second just because I think it is one of these sci-fi

[01:06:02] tropes that everybody is roughly humanoid shaped.

[01:06:05] Even Avatar, 12 feet is not that much different.

[01:06:08] No, right.

[01:06:09] They're basically basketball players.

[01:06:10] Yeah.

[01:06:11] So somebody who is on a massively different scale but I would also say the microscopic.

[01:06:15] Yeah.

[01:06:16] Well, have you ever read the Bruce Coville Alien books which I was obsessed with when I was a

[01:06:21] kid?

[01:06:22] No, no.

[01:06:23] One of the cool things about that is that-

[01:06:24] Like the alien of my breakfast?

[01:06:25] The alien's ate my homework.

[01:06:26] He left my sneakers and dimensionnaires.

[01:06:27] They're the greatest books ever.

[01:06:28] You should read all four of them.

[01:06:30] They're amazing.

[01:06:31] And one of the things, in the first book they're tiny when they meet him.

[01:06:34] And like because they've been shrunk to a microscopic size.

[01:06:36] Like not like they're like two inches tall.

[01:06:38] And they keep talking around the fact like what size they actually are.

[01:06:43] And in the second book you realize that they come up to like your waist.

[01:06:48] And like that is- and like that's them.

[01:06:50] They're like, yeah this is most people are this size but humans are just really tall.

[01:06:55] Like that's one of the many brilliant things in those books.

[01:06:58] That's very interesting.

[01:06:59] That's just like I had never thought about before.

[01:07:00] And those books also have Gracker who's the lead alien character says that he's

[01:07:04] from a swamp.

[01:07:05] And the kid's like, oh you're from a swamp planet?

[01:07:07] And he's like, no.

[01:07:09] Like my planet had a swamp.

[01:07:11] Like a swamp planet.

[01:07:12] Like it's just spelling that sort of Star Wars which we've talked about.

[01:07:15] The one environment planet.

[01:07:17] Multiple ecosystems within one planet.

[01:07:19] Anyway back to Snoke.

[01:07:21] Ben's Snoke Corner.

[01:07:22] Yes, so he's not really that big.

[01:07:28] It's just like a-

[01:07:29] It's just a projection.

[01:07:30] Yeah.

[01:07:31] It's a deep field dude.

[01:07:32] Well it's unknown.

[01:07:33] His size is unknown.

[01:07:34] He could be big.

[01:07:35] He could be kind of big.

[01:07:36] He could be tiny.

[01:07:37] But I feel like it's just a projection.

[01:07:39] You think it's just a rip off.

[01:07:40] Can I throw what is out to you?

[01:07:41] He's very big.

[01:07:42] So I said this when you were out of the room setting up the levels.

[01:07:44] I said this to Emily and David.

[01:07:45] No, this is a good one.

[01:07:46] You might like this okay?

[01:07:47] So let's keep the hope alive because right now it's a classic J.J. Mystery Box.

[01:07:50] We don't know until we open it what size he actually is right?

[01:07:53] So you go oh the holograms big.

[01:07:55] He's probably a small guy and the holograms deceptively big right?

[01:07:57] But let's look at the visual language of Star Wars.

[01:08:00] In every Star Wars movie we've seen so far the holograms itty bitty.

[01:08:04] It's like four to six inches.

[01:08:07] Well sometimes they have a regular sized hologram but they've had many a small one.

[01:08:09] They've had little palm holograms.

[01:08:11] I'd say I've never seen a hologram because the biggest one I can remember is the one...

[01:08:14] They have a life size, two scale.

[01:08:16] They have two scale.

[01:08:17] And there's the ones where they're sitting in the chairs and some people are sitting in chairs elsewhere which is great.

[01:08:22] Now you can do that and like you can actually teleconference that and have a play.

[01:08:26] That's actually honestly pretty cool.

[01:08:28] A lot of the holograms, I'll correct my statement.

[01:08:31] A lot of the holograms are very small.

[01:08:33] Pocket sized in the palm.

[01:08:34] There's that one like where Obi-Wan is like I'm on a clown planet.

[01:08:37] And he's like really tidy.

[01:08:38] I think I know where you're going with this though.

[01:08:40] So you're saying that maybe he's even bigger than the holograms.

[01:08:43] So if we go oh man the holograms are one tension size of the person.

[01:08:48] Where's he and Snoke?

[01:08:49] That's the biggest they can fit in that room.

[01:08:52] Maybe he's like the size of a pyramid.

[01:08:54] Like he's that big.

[01:08:55] That would be so cool.

[01:08:56] What if it turns out that Star Killer based?

[01:08:59] It's me as day!

[01:09:00] Ben what if it turns out that...

[01:09:01] After shooting him down about X-Men apocalypse which I feel a little bad about...

[01:09:04] It looks fun, Ben.

[01:09:06] It looks like a lot of fun.

[01:09:07] We're going to see it together.

[01:09:08] We're going to have a great time.

[01:09:09] I'll see it!

[01:09:10] You're not invited.

[01:09:11] Ben and I are best friends now.

[01:09:13] What if Star Killer based isn't a base that they built with machinery but it's Snoke's motherfucking eyeball?

[01:09:20] He's got laser eyes.

[01:09:22] They popped one of his eye in.

[01:09:24] I was going to say though about the planet.

[01:09:26] Emily, what did you think about that that it turns into a sun eye?

[01:09:29] Oh I actually like that.

[01:09:30] I thought that was super cool.

[01:09:31] It's because it's like you were expecting the Death Star explosion to happen again because here was the Death Star basically again.

[01:09:36] And then yeah, it's kind of a cool...

[01:09:38] It's actually a little more positive.

[01:09:39] It's not just the Death Star again though.

[01:09:41] It's even bigger.

[01:09:42] Yeah.

[01:09:43] No but Ben's like, you must have liked that.

[01:09:45] Did you like the thing where they're like, here's the Death Star.

[01:09:47] Here's Star Killer based!

[01:09:49] I love that shit.

[01:09:50] Of course.

[01:09:51] Can't just come back with the same old shit.

[01:09:53] That'd be bigger.

[01:09:54] Ben what did you think of Maz Kaneda?

[01:09:59] Who's that?

[01:10:00] That's the old alien bartender played by Lippie and Ango.

[01:10:02] Very tiny.

[01:10:03] Well I mean she was small but she had a lot of wisdom.

[01:10:05] That's right.

[01:10:06] And she also could deal with that...

[01:10:07] The guys.

[01:10:08] The guys.

[01:10:09] The guys.

[01:10:10] And she could deal with that rough crowd.

[01:10:11] Yeah.

[01:10:12] And who did she have a crush on?

[01:10:13] Chewy.

[01:10:14] Who is?

[01:10:15] Big.

[01:10:16] A big hairy guy.

[01:10:17] She called him my boyfriend.

[01:10:18] My boyfriend.

[01:10:19] And he's like seven foot one.

[01:10:20] It's the best, it's one of the best lines.

[01:10:22] Yeah.

[01:10:23] That is not given any further explanation.

[01:10:25] That's just how she addressed it.

[01:10:27] And his body language is kind of like...

[01:10:28] Millions of fanfares.

[01:10:29] Just to splurge.

[01:10:31] Do you think they hooked up once and he like...

[01:10:33] Totally.

[01:10:34] Yeah.

[01:10:35] I don't know, I think of Chewy as this family man who for some reason goes on adventures.

[01:10:39] We forgot that is Kannon.

[01:10:40] That is Kannon.

[01:10:41] He is married.

[01:10:42] Of course.

[01:10:43] What's his son's name?

[01:10:46] His son is Lumpy.

[01:10:47] Lumpy.

[01:10:48] His father is Itchy.

[01:10:49] Itchy.

[01:10:50] I do not remember his wife's name.

[01:10:51] His wife is Mala and she looks like Chewbacca but she wears an apron because she has

[01:10:53] a lady.

[01:10:54] So have you guys talked about the names?

[01:10:56] Yeah, because I feel like I talked about this when I reviewed the Star Wars Holiday Special

[01:10:59] for AV Club way back when...

[01:11:02] Me and Mala are AV Club.

[01:11:04] Long time ago, Galaxy Far Far Away.

[01:11:06] So Itchy and Lumpy are supposedly...

[01:11:10] They are adjectives that end in an E sound like Chewy but are they short for Itchaca

[01:11:15] and Lumbacca?

[01:11:16] Yes.

[01:11:17] Wikipedia listings.

[01:11:18] Really?

[01:11:19] I looked this up.

[01:11:20] I forgot to mention so we did the Holiday Special.

[01:11:21] Yes.

[01:11:22] Their names are Itchy-Kana.

[01:11:23] Oh wow.

[01:11:24] And Lumpy-Cora or whatever.

[01:11:25] I'm looking this up now.

[01:11:26] Yes, 100%.

[01:11:27] Yeah, it's a no.

[01:11:28] It's Lumpararu.

[01:11:29] Lumpararu.

[01:11:30] God damn it.

[01:11:31] Yup.

[01:11:32] Yeah, it's a real bummer.

[01:11:33] Wait, who was I talking to about the Holiday Special where George Lucas was not really

[01:11:40] privy to anything that was going on with it and drove over in the middle of the

[01:11:45] broadcast?

[01:11:46] I was talking to you about that.

[01:11:47] Yes.

[01:11:48] That's amazing.

[01:11:49] Literally from the middle of the broadcast.

[01:11:51] Yeah, so on the planet.

[01:11:53] Okay, Ben's no ball.

[01:11:54] A bar planet.

[01:11:55] Yeah.

[01:11:56] Taco Donna.

[01:11:57] Taco Bell.

[01:11:58] Ben's looking at a notebook.

[01:11:59] He came and loaded with notes today.

[01:12:00] There's a really fun moment I think it's at this point where Han gets Chewy's gun

[01:12:04] and he shoots it and he's kind of like...

[01:12:06] Oh yeah, the bowcaster.

[01:12:07] This is cool.

[01:12:08] Yeah.

[01:12:09] I like that a lot.

[01:12:10] That was so unnecessary.

[01:12:11] I don't know who that is.

[01:12:12] Who's that a winked?

[01:12:13] Is that really always written a fanfic where he got to shoot with the crossbow

[01:12:17] thing?

[01:12:18] Because here's the thing, Chewy has always had that thing.

[01:12:21] Yeah, yeah.

[01:12:22] But you almost never see him use it very rarely and it never seemed any different.

[01:12:26] The bowcaster, he rarely fires.

[01:12:27] I also don't understand why it looks like that is just a blaster.

[01:12:30] It doesn't make any sense.

[01:12:31] The bullets are held in the side balls.

[01:12:33] Like is this supposed to be a primitive kind of gun?

[01:12:36] Like it's a crossbow but it still shoots a laser.

[01:12:38] It's very clearly someone was just like...

[01:12:39] I guess you can clonk somebody with it.

[01:12:41] You can clonk someone with it.

[01:12:42] But I mean it's obviously some designer for Empire Strikes Backward or whatever.

[01:12:45] I was like, I don't know.

[01:12:46] It can be like a crossbow.

[01:12:47] That's cool, right?

[01:12:48] Yeah.

[01:12:49] And so but I like that in this movie they're like, well no.

[01:12:50] The thing is it's more powerful.

[01:12:52] It can like make a bigger blast thing and it blasts people into it.

[01:12:56] I know who likes that.

[01:12:57] Right over here?

[01:12:58] Right next to you?

[01:12:59] Big fan.

[01:13:00] Birthday Ben.

[01:13:01] Yeah, birthday Ben.

[01:13:02] Yeah.

[01:13:03] Anyway, any other notes?

[01:13:05] Okay, yeah.

[01:13:06] We'll wrap this up.

[01:13:08] I love seeing Ben be this excited.

[01:13:10] This screening.

[01:13:11] We made Ben listen to 30 episodes of us talking about the prequels.

[01:13:15] Just to be clear.

[01:13:16] Like 32 maybe.

[01:13:18] Who knows?

[01:13:19] A lot.

[01:13:20] It was ridiculous.

[01:13:21] Ben hates them.

[01:13:22] He also hated Robert Diane Jr.'s The Judge.

[01:13:23] Which we also did a one-off episode.

[01:13:25] Oh my God.

[01:13:26] And then we did an episode on the three Fantastic Four movies and he didn't even watch them.

[01:13:29] No, they didn't even bother.

[01:13:30] But he likes this movie.

[01:13:31] Yeah.

[01:13:32] This is great.

[01:13:33] And you saw it with your pups, right?

[01:13:34] Pups, how's it like?

[01:13:35] Just you and dad?

[01:13:36] Just me and dad.

[01:13:37] Well, he was into it.

[01:13:38] He's a tough sell.

[01:13:39] Really?

[01:13:40] He's like a hardcore science fiction reader.

[01:13:43] Oh.

[01:13:44] And so he was kind of just like, meh, I'm done with the whole trope kind of stuff.

[01:13:48] Not hard enough for him.

[01:13:49] I want more interesting different worlds.

[01:13:51] Are you guys okay accepting that Star Wars is not sci-fi though?

[01:13:55] Yeah, it's fantasy movie.

[01:13:56] It's a fantasy movie in space.

[01:13:58] I agree.

[01:13:59] Yeah.

[01:14:00] I think people who try to evaluate it on that level are asking for strife and everything.

[01:14:05] What a miserable life you're leading.

[01:14:07] Yeah, tell your dad he lives a miserable life.

[01:14:10] I saw this movie with my third child.

[01:14:12] The third time I saw this movie, I saw it with my mom and it was the second Star Wars movie

[01:14:16] she'd ever seen and the first Star Wars movie she saw was Revenge of the Sith when she came

[01:14:19] to our live show.

[01:14:20] Weird.

[01:14:21] Which doesn't really count because she didn't really watch the movie.

[01:14:24] And let's mention, because this is a big update since the last time we recorded,

[01:14:26] your mom has framed the poster from our live show.

[01:14:29] She did.

[01:14:30] It's hanging on my wall.

[01:14:31] She framed it.

[01:14:32] Awesome.

[01:14:33] It is.

[01:14:34] It's very nice.

[01:14:35] It was a Christmas present for me.

[01:14:36] I know.

[01:14:37] It's hanging on my wall now.

[01:14:38] She framed it for me.

[01:14:39] I mean, she was like, it's just a target frame.

[01:14:40] Like she was trying to, but you know, it was nice.

[01:14:42] Oh man, that reminds me of like this is another pre-episode one activity.

[01:14:47] So you were about my age, right?

[01:14:49] You were about 12 or so.

[01:14:50] Yeah, 13.

[01:14:51] 13, yeah.

[01:14:52] Yeah.

[01:14:53] I had very, very rudimentary Photoshop availability.

[01:14:58] Sure.

[01:14:59] Definitely took Polaroid pictures and in front of like what I thought was like

[01:15:04] a green screen and tried to drop myself into pictures from Star Wars.

[01:15:09] So you took Polaroid pictures in front of a green screen and you scanned these into your

[01:15:13] computer?

[01:15:14] Yeah, I had a scanner.

[01:15:15] And then tried to...

[01:15:16] Yeah, I tried to trim out the background.

[01:15:17] That is awesome.

[01:15:18] That changed the lighting.

[01:15:19] Like this was my first foray into Photoshop.

[01:15:22] Remember when you just had Photoshop and you were just sort of like, well what does

[01:15:25] this button do?

[01:15:26] You're like, let's see what all this does.

[01:15:28] I just make everyone bald.

[01:15:29] That's what I would do.

[01:15:30] I thought that was funny.

[01:15:31] Cut off their hair.

[01:15:32] He's got a funny.

[01:15:33] Yeah.

[01:15:34] I love Photoshop.

[01:15:36] Ben, any more notes?

[01:15:38] Well, I don't like the Calamari dude.

[01:15:41] Akbar?

[01:15:42] Yeah, you're not into Akbar.

[01:15:43] He's a good guy.

[01:15:44] It's just, well whatever.

[01:15:45] We're not going to get into it.

[01:15:46] He doesn't have a big head.

[01:15:48] He doesn't have a big head.

[01:15:49] And he hates traps, Ben.

[01:15:50] You also hate traps.

[01:15:52] There's one thing you know about me.

[01:15:54] Very anti-traps.

[01:15:55] What does Vino in this one?

[01:15:57] What does he say?

[01:15:58] Like we go, oh firepower.

[01:16:00] Oh, it'll be shielded from all firepower.

[01:16:02] I'm doing his slipper hand with my left hand right now.

[01:16:05] I honestly, I missed his lines.

[01:16:07] You were just going like, yes, yes.

[01:16:09] And I was like, shut up Griffin.

[01:16:11] That was after you'd interrupted me to tell me that Ken Lung was in the movie.

[01:16:14] When I already could see him.

[01:16:16] He was there.

[01:16:17] But at that point he was out of focus.

[01:16:18] I went, is that Ken Lung?

[01:16:19] Is that Ken Lung?

[01:16:20] No, Ken Lung is, no, no, Miss the Ear guy.

[01:16:24] Ken Lung is just an actor.

[01:16:26] Miles on Lost.

[01:16:27] He's a great actor.

[01:16:28] He's like one of the guys in that control room.

[01:16:30] I didn't watch Lost.

[01:16:32] I'll show you what he looks like.

[01:16:34] I love Nyanyem.

[01:16:36] Nyanyem.

[01:16:37] Oh, yes, yes, yes.

[01:16:38] I like him.

[01:16:39] Oh yeah, he was in that one episode of the Sopranos.

[01:16:41] Real good episode.

[01:16:43] I also have to see that ear dude.

[01:16:45] Yeah, he's back.

[01:16:46] Hell yeah.

[01:16:47] Is it the same guy?

[01:16:48] It's the same guy.

[01:16:49] Is it really?

[01:16:50] They got the same guy.

[01:16:51] I thought it was just a different, a different species.

[01:16:53] Not only is it the same guy, it's the same actor.

[01:16:55] Really?

[01:16:56] For Acbar too, they got the same actor.

[01:16:57] The same voice actor.

[01:16:58] Yeah, he's like 92.

[01:17:00] Look, come on.

[01:17:01] Do you want to know something really sad about representation in movies?

[01:17:05] Go ahead.

[01:17:06] Is that I thought that Nyanyem was Japanese when I was a kid?

[01:17:09] I'm half Japanese and so I really liked him a lot because I was like, oh, it's the Japanese person.

[01:17:15] Did you literally just think he is Japanese or did you think this is kind of a stand-in for a Japanese character?

[01:17:21] I don't know what I thought exactly.

[01:17:23] That was your mindset.

[01:17:25] Yeah, that's the one that's like me.

[01:17:27] You thought he was from his planet Japan?

[01:17:29] Yeah, yeah, exactly.

[01:17:30] He was from a planet where his species was dominant.

[01:17:32] He was from that planet Japan.

[01:17:34] I think there's one Asian pilot in Return of the Jedi, nothing more than that is, but there's one guy who dies, you know, among in this sort of the wedge kind of battle group.

[01:17:44] He has a screaming death.

[01:17:45] Yes, he has a screaming death.

[01:17:46] He goes, ah!

[01:17:47] He's in a Y-wing?

[01:17:48] There's one in this.

[01:17:49] There's an Asian woman pilot.

[01:17:50] We were talking about how much we love B-wings.

[01:17:51] Me and you.

[01:17:52] I love Mia B-wing.

[01:17:53] There's no B-wings in this movie.

[01:17:54] Star Wars Rebels, which is the Disney XD animated show that I watch, had a whole B-wing episode recently about like the construction of the B-wings.

[01:18:02] Oh, that's for me.

[01:18:03] It's kind of a cool episode.

[01:18:04] Yeah, I like B-wings and I like the Slave One.

[01:18:06] I think I like vertical ships because I just like think outside the box.

[01:18:09] Yeah, they're different.

[01:18:10] They're different.

[01:18:11] That is cool.

[01:18:13] Yeah, the B-wings are cool.

[01:18:15] Hey, you know what I like?

[01:18:16] Shoot.

[01:18:17] I like Star Wars.

[01:18:18] Great.

[01:18:19] Love Star Wars.

[01:18:20] I spent like three weeks like weighing all these things and thinking about my gripes and whatever.

[01:18:24] But I'm here talking about it.

[01:18:25] It's like, oh my gosh, a movie where people go in spaceships and they hug each other and they fight and they kiss and they hang out.

[01:18:31] They don't really kiss.

[01:18:32] They kiss?

[01:18:33] Who kisses?

[01:18:34] Honolia.

[01:18:35] Oh, not in this one.

[01:18:36] No, they hug.

[01:18:37] I'm not saying this movie specifically.

[01:18:38] I'm saying Star Wars The Saga has kissing in it.

[01:18:39] There's a little bit of kissing.

[01:18:41] It happens enough.

[01:18:42] I just want to...

[01:18:43] I don't like movies with no kissing.

[01:18:44] When I was a kid, I was like not into the kissing.

[01:18:46] Always a fan of kissing.

[01:18:47] Oh, brag about that.

[01:18:48] I was a fan of kissing from day one.

[01:18:50] Unless they were married.

[01:18:52] I thought that when you kissed your bride was the first time you kissed your bride.

[01:18:56] Like the first time you were kissing the person.

[01:18:58] See, I think that's very interesting because the movies that girls are into at that age are very...

[01:19:04] A kiss is the thing that happens and then you get married but you do it when you're not married.

[01:19:08] You do.

[01:19:09] There's one.

[01:19:10] That's how you tell that you're going to get married to somebody.

[01:19:12] For some reason, I guess I thought that was why they made such a big deal about it in the wedding.

[01:19:16] It's something like you can kiss the bride where it's like you can now kiss the bride.

[01:19:21] Exactly.

[01:19:24] Anyway.

[01:19:26] Any other...

[01:19:27] Okay, one last thing.

[01:19:28] One last thing.

[01:19:29] Alright, so what's the...

[01:19:31] It looks like hot but it's a...

[01:19:33] Starkiller base.

[01:19:34] Starkiller base.

[01:19:35] Starkiller base.

[01:19:36] Alright.

[01:19:37] Grinning from ear to ear, Ben.

[01:19:38] I'm just going to say, me...

[01:19:40] I feel like they could have made some changes.

[01:19:42] Right?

[01:19:43] A lot of changes with this movie.

[01:19:44] Constructive criticism.

[01:19:45] Yeah, just saying.

[01:19:46] Like we personally...

[01:19:47] We could have.

[01:19:48] I don't think it should always be a good versus evil kind of thing.

[01:19:50] I think there should be like a lot of different players involved.

[01:19:53] You have some true detective in your show.

[01:19:55] Make it look like a real thing.

[01:19:56] Maybe some drone shots of Coruscant.

[01:19:57] Well that's what we're saying.

[01:19:58] We want the underworld show.

[01:19:59] Shades of gray.

[01:20:00] You want shades of gray, Ben.

[01:20:01] Nobody likes my drone shots of Coruscant.

[01:20:03] Great true detective joke.

[01:20:05] So you want to see some third parties coming in?

[01:20:08] That's just one suggestion.

[01:20:09] Okay?

[01:20:10] But here, this is the thing I feel very passionate about.

[01:20:12] Okay.

[01:20:13] I want to see a particular with this Starkiller planet.

[01:20:15] I've seen Snow Planet before.

[01:20:17] I want to see a rain planet.

[01:20:20] Ah, well, Camino is the rain planet.

[01:20:22] Camino...

[01:20:23] Remember Camino?

[01:20:24] Camino much?

[01:20:25] Don't.

[01:20:26] It's in the second movie.

[01:20:27] It's the one where he has the fight with Django Fett.

[01:20:29] The clone planet.

[01:20:30] It's just raining outside.

[01:20:31] It's water world if it was raining all the time.

[01:20:32] It's like all water.

[01:20:33] Actually kind of like Camino a lot.

[01:20:34] Camino gives me the creeps.

[01:20:36] Camino's weird.

[01:20:37] Yeah.

[01:20:38] Because people who live there look scary.

[01:20:39] Ben, I still love it.

[01:20:40] Oh, you think the Camino...

[01:20:41] I like the Camino and the Pop Lips.

[01:20:42] I like the scary.

[01:20:43] The weird long neck of Pop Lips.

[01:20:44] Yeah, I think it looks fun.

[01:20:45] I like 80s as a fashion aesthetic.

[01:20:47] Yeah.

[01:20:48] It's got a great cast.

[01:20:49] I felt like I could team players.

[01:20:50] Wait, what are you guys talking about?

[01:20:51] We went off on a...

[01:20:52] Are you talking about the fucking X-Men movie?

[01:20:53] So anyway...

[01:20:54] No we're not!

[01:20:55] No we're not!

[01:20:56] Let Ben and I be friends.

[01:20:57] You guys can be friends.

[01:20:58] Cool.

[01:20:59] Uh, X-Men, love it.

[01:21:01] Great.

[01:21:02] Don't care about this new movie.

[01:21:03] I like X-Men.

[01:21:04] We all love Femke Janssen.

[01:21:05] Love Femke Jans.

[01:21:06] Femke Janssen.

[01:21:07] Femke Janssen.

[01:21:08] I like the first two X-Men movies.

[01:21:11] Agreed.

[01:21:12] I like First Class.

[01:21:13] I like First Class, okay?

[01:21:14] I think so too.

[01:21:15] I like it a lot.

[01:21:16] It is a future pass.

[01:21:17] I don't remember it all.

[01:21:18] But I remember I had a couple things in it.

[01:21:19] It's bad.

[01:21:20] It's bad.

[01:21:21] Had fun while watching it.

[01:21:22] Yeah.

[01:21:23] No, I...

[01:21:24] It's a bummer though.

[01:21:25] Yeah, it's a bummer.

[01:21:26] There's like so many characters have nothing to do in that movie.

[01:21:28] Right, and the whole movie is them just like fixing Brett Ratner's movie.

[01:21:31] Which, it's funny that they needed a whole movie to undo Brett Ratner's movie.

[01:21:36] Like that is amusing.

[01:21:37] That amuses David Sims right over here.

[01:21:40] But still, it's not really worthy of art.

[01:21:43] Go ahead.

[01:21:44] I think we should wrap this up so I just want to finish my point.

[01:21:46] All right, listen.

[01:21:47] All right, so there's a rain planet.

[01:21:48] But anyway, what I wanted to see...

[01:21:50] What I wanted to see, the animated series that we watched.

[01:21:53] Yeah, the Jenny Tartotas.

[01:21:54] Do you remember that fight scene with the rain?

[01:21:57] Oh, with the rain.

[01:21:58] Oh, the one with Anakin and Asajj Ventress on top of it.

[01:22:01] Yeah, sure.

[01:22:02] That was really cool.

[01:22:03] The one I wanted to see at the end was a good wet fight scene.

[01:22:07] This is another one of Ben's sticky points.

[01:22:09] Yeah, he likes things that are wet.

[01:22:10] So Ben created three...

[01:22:11] Wet fight!

[01:22:12] Ben created three original characters for Star Wars.

[01:22:15] A wet fight scene would be cool because they could like fizz off of the lightsaber.

[01:22:19] It could be like when you have a...

[01:22:20] That happened in the snow.

[01:22:21] That's what happened in the...

[01:22:22] It happened with the snow, which was cool.

[01:22:23] Which is really, really cool.

[01:22:24] It's water tapping all the time.

[01:22:25] What do you guys think of a lightsaber fight?

[01:22:26] I liked it.

[01:22:27] I think it's better every time I see it.

[01:22:29] It's pretty intense.

[01:22:30] Yeah.

[01:22:31] I like that it's kind of raw because obviously one half doesn't know how to do anything anyway.

[01:22:36] They're just sort of...

[01:22:37] And the other made this janky ass lightsaber.

[01:22:39] He made a weird lightsaber.

[01:22:40] He's been shot in the side and he keeps whacking himself, which me and Griffin were into when we were little.

[01:22:46] It was a very Adam Driver.

[01:22:47] That is a very Adam Driver little bit of detail there.

[01:22:50] But that's like a real actor moment that we didn't get at all in the prequels.

[01:22:54] It's like an actor making a choice.

[01:22:56] That is the biggest...

[01:22:57] That is the single biggest difference between the prequels and this and camera work.

[01:23:00] Camera work and acting.

[01:23:01] Acting is actually somewhat human in these movies.

[01:23:04] I'd say it's very human in this movie.

[01:23:06] Agreed.

[01:23:07] And Emily, that is a perfect transition to what I think will be the final segment on this episode.

[01:23:10] This was a really loose, unstructured episode.

[01:23:12] But I think it's fun.

[01:23:13] I think it's a fun talk.

[01:23:14] I don't know.

[01:23:15] Do you guys have a fun talk, Emily?

[01:23:16] Yeah.

[01:23:17] Yeah.

[01:23:18] I feel like there are five things that I...

[01:23:19] Five points I never got to make.

[01:23:20] Make the points.

[01:23:21] But I don't remember what they are now.

[01:23:22] Come on.

[01:23:23] Let's keep making points.

[01:23:24] We might have to do the Force Reawakens Reawakens.

[01:23:26] Oh, did you see somebody...

[01:23:28] Somebody on, like, I want to say, Slashfilm today that I could be wrong.

[01:23:32] Oh, he was saying, when does the Force Awakens...

[01:23:33] When exactly does the Force Awakens...

[01:23:34] He was trying to pinpoint it.

[01:23:36] You know what?

[01:23:37] I didn't even finish that article.

[01:23:38] I was like, oh, good headline.

[01:23:40] And I read one paragraph into it and I was like, I bet I could think about this.

[01:23:43] I'd rather eat a fart than read an article.

[01:23:44] I'll say, that is one thing that...

[01:23:46] Boom!

[01:23:47] No, that is...

[01:23:48] I'd rather eat a fart to feed.

[01:23:50] Wow.

[01:23:51] That is one thing that annoyed me in the initial wave of like, why is it made

[01:23:55] some good stuff?

[01:23:56] Like where it's like, it's called the Force Awakens.

[01:23:58] The whole idea is that people are suddenly kind of like...

[01:24:00] Yeah.

[01:24:01] Because Finn snapped out of it, you know, like, and that's sort of unexplained.

[01:24:04] But the idea is like, it should suddenly happening again.

[01:24:06] And that's like why everyone was like, well, why is R2 in sleep mode

[01:24:08] then he wakes up?

[01:24:09] Because he's starting to wake up!

[01:24:10] Wake up!

[01:24:11] The R2-D2 Awakens!

[01:24:12] Yeah, they're waking up.

[01:24:13] Everyone's waking up.

[01:24:14] I don't like that part.

[01:24:15] What if it was called Star Wars R2-D2 Awakens?

[01:24:17] That'd be great if it was called Star Wars R2-D2 Awakens.

[01:24:19] David hit me.

[01:24:20] I hit you with two of my fingers.

[01:24:22] You big fingers.

[01:24:23] Do you need R2-D2 and C3PO in the movies anymore at this point?

[01:24:27] I enjoyed the 3PO, like the two minutes of 3PO.

[01:24:30] I enjoy him and I liked that he was into his red arm, like, you know...

[01:24:34] And very power.

[01:24:35] And into kind of explaining but not explaining it?

[01:24:38] No, I didn't want to explain it all.

[01:24:39] I just wanted him to say like...

[01:24:40] I don't care?

[01:24:41] No, I just liked that he was like, you probably didn't notice me

[01:24:43] because of the red arm, that just amuses me.

[01:24:45] Yeah, yeah.

[01:24:46] He thinks anyone would care.

[01:24:48] I don't think I need them in the movies.

[01:24:51] Because BB-8 is in the movie.

[01:24:52] Yeah.

[01:24:53] Right?

[01:24:54] Yeah, no I feel the same way.

[01:24:55] I mean I love them.

[01:24:56] Absolutely.

[01:24:57] Zero knocks to C3PO and R2-D2.

[01:24:59] Like took me through a lot of important moments in my childhood.

[01:25:01] But BB-8 is great.

[01:25:03] BB-8 got this.

[01:25:04] BB-8 got this.

[01:25:05] Really got this.

[01:25:06] Where is BB-8 when the movie ends?

[01:25:09] Because R2 goes with...

[01:25:10] He's on the ship with Rey.

[01:25:11] He's on the ship with Rey?

[01:25:12] Okay, okay.

[01:25:13] Rey is about to...

[01:25:14] Ray, Chun, and BB-8.

[01:25:15] Basically the three best characters.

[01:25:17] It's R2-D2.

[01:25:18] Yeah, I move...

[01:25:19] Best friends.

[01:25:20] R2.

[01:25:21] He's just still back at the...

[01:25:22] I think he's back with Leia.

[01:25:23] Okay.

[01:25:24] Yeah.

[01:25:25] Because I like the idea that 3PO just chills with Leia, you know?

[01:25:28] That it's kind of like an old dog that sort of just stays with its master, you know?

[01:25:32] Old robot butler.

[01:25:33] Yeah, he's just like, can I help?

[01:25:35] And she's always sort of like...

[01:25:36] Yeah, sure.

[01:25:37] If it makes you feel useful.

[01:25:39] Yeah, go for it.

[01:25:41] Oh, I remember the rain planet was the clone planet.

[01:25:44] Yeah, you got it.

[01:25:45] Okay, so final segment.

[01:25:47] Final segment.

[01:25:48] Wait, are there any other points, Emily?

[01:25:49] Rattling around in your head.

[01:25:50] No, I can't think of anything.

[01:25:52] I'm sorry.

[01:25:53] No, it's okay.

[01:25:54] I just want to give you a fair ground.

[01:25:56] You liked the movie?

[01:25:58] I did.

[01:25:59] I mean, I did.

[01:26:02] I think the repetition stuff is...

[01:26:05] The sort of...

[01:26:06] Yeah, I don't know that I will see it again because of that.

[01:26:09] Like that in the theaters this round.

[01:26:11] Although I do want to see a better production of it because I last one I saw was in

[01:26:15] 3D without matting on it and I almost like lost my shit at this...

[01:26:18] Poor little mall in...

[01:26:20] Emily complained to a projectionist.

[01:26:23] I am one of those people and I know what happens to me.

[01:26:26] I think it's because it's not even that the movie is expensive anymore.

[01:26:30] It's like...

[01:26:32] This is my time.

[01:26:34] Well, it's not about me.

[01:26:35] It's about the art of movies.

[01:26:37] I want people to do it right and I want people to see the movies the way that they were made to be seen

[01:26:42] and oftentimes you already have a big not going to guess who because it's in digital

[01:26:47] but then to not even mat it correctly.

[01:26:49] I mean, I'm sorry.

[01:26:51] I got very heated.

[01:26:53] You did the right thing.

[01:26:55] It's all green lights in this studio right now.

[01:26:57] We're totally on your side here.

[01:26:59] The worst one was when I complained about sound in American Hustle.

[01:27:02] You complained about sound in American Hustle?

[01:27:04] What was happening to the sound in American Hustle?

[01:27:06] It was just not loud at all.

[01:27:10] Well that is annoying.

[01:27:11] But then of course did you complain?

[01:27:13] Yeah anyway, American Hustle's piece of shit.

[01:27:15] I'm not asking you because I am late for rehearsal.

[01:27:17] That's literally next door within the same complex that we are in right now.

[01:27:21] I have to pick up a side table.

[01:27:23] Where are you picking it up?

[01:27:25] Whatever the neighborhood is, it's like south of Park Flow.

[01:27:29] I don't know my way around this area.

[01:27:31] South Flow?

[01:27:32] Like Greenwood Heights or Sunset Park.

[01:27:34] Yeah, Greenwood Heights.

[01:27:36] Final segment, two of the things are regulars that we do on the show.

[01:27:40] We have to do a performance review.

[01:27:41] That's what we're going to do.

[01:27:42] We're going to go through and also talk about the billing order.

[01:27:44] We're going to go through on the poster.

[01:27:46] No, I got the billing order.

[01:27:48] Is it the same as the poster order?

[01:27:50] Go right ahead.

[01:27:51] I just want to do this because this is the way it's credited in the end credits.

[01:27:54] The billing order is crazy in this movie.

[01:27:56] Emily is looking at us like we're just like...

[01:27:59] You mean in the end credits?

[01:28:00] Yes, the end credits.

[01:28:01] So the performance review we do is we go through the actors.

[01:28:03] We're going to go through just the actors.

[01:28:04] Thumbs up, thumbs down.

[01:28:05] Solo card billing in the end credits.

[01:28:07] We're on the poster.

[01:28:08] This is the order they're building.

[01:28:09] We're going to discuss very quickly, quick takes on whether or not that billing order

[01:28:13] is just, but also you give a thumbs up.

[01:28:16] Hollywood politics man.

[01:28:17] We're fucking talking about here.

[01:28:19] It's intense.

[01:28:20] Open back the curtain.

[01:28:21] Okay.

[01:28:22] Thumbs up, thumbs down.

[01:28:23] Pass, fail on each performance.

[01:28:25] The billing order is salary order.

[01:28:27] I'm almost certain.

[01:28:28] 100%.

[01:28:29] Okay, first build, Harrison Ford.

[01:28:31] Pass, thumbs up.

[01:28:32] Great performance.

[01:28:33] So much better than he needed to be also.

[01:28:34] Yeah, really I think he brought it.

[01:28:36] I was very satisfied.

[01:28:38] You could call this movie Star Wars the Ford Awakens

[01:28:40] because for the first time he wasn't snoozing on camera.

[01:28:43] For the first time in Star Wars?

[01:28:45] In like 15 years.

[01:28:47] I think he's very good in Morning Glory also.

[01:28:49] I think he should have been nominated for that.

[01:28:50] All right, let's move on to the next one.

[01:28:51] Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker.

[01:28:52] Second build.

[01:28:53] Mark Hamill.

[01:28:55] I like his face make, the faces he makes.

[01:28:58] So for our listeners, Mark Hamill played Luke Skywalker.

[01:29:02] I mean not enough information, not enough to evaluate.

[01:29:06] I like the face he made.

[01:29:07] I think it's some really good face acting.

[01:29:09] Like this.

[01:29:10] Oh yeah.

[01:29:11] His hair looks so good.

[01:29:12] No, not his hair.

[01:29:13] The movement was great but also his hair looks really good.

[01:29:16] Emily for the listeners is mimicking him dropping his hood.

[01:29:18] He does a very dramatic, like I like to do this now because I have a very big hood on my head.

[01:29:22] He like heals it off.

[01:29:23] He heals it off, drops the hands down.

[01:29:25] And he doesn't even touch his hair.

[01:29:26] Yeah.

[01:29:27] Like somehow, yeah.

[01:29:28] All right, Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia.

[01:29:29] Well let's talk about, I just want to quickly say, so Harrison Ford apparently

[01:29:31] got $20 million for the movie.

[01:29:33] And I think Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher each got like, they said like three or five.

[01:29:37] Mark Hamill got $5 million to drop a hood.

[01:29:39] Good job buddy.

[01:29:40] Go get it, Mark.

[01:29:41] Yeah.

[01:29:42] Like that's cool.

[01:29:43] He's also going to have a lot to do in the next movie obviously.

[01:29:44] I mean they paid him to ensure that he stayed in the next movies.

[01:29:46] Nice day of work if you can get it.

[01:29:48] Carrie Fisher, third build, Princess Leia, massive thumbs up.

[01:29:51] Yeah, I loved her.

[01:29:52] Yeah, she's good.

[01:29:53] She's good.

[01:29:54] And also for somebody who doesn't act much really nice.

[01:29:56] Yeah, she hasn't done like a non cameo.

[01:29:58] She's on this Bravo show.

[01:30:02] Isn't I, yes.

[01:30:04] Somebody can correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure she's on a good

[01:30:06] show.

[01:30:07] Yeah, yeah, yeah, right.

[01:30:08] She is, yeah no she's definitely in that.

[01:30:10] I saw the pile in the back.

[01:30:11] Okay so what they call the legacy players are build first, right?

[01:30:13] And that's part of their contract stipulation.

[01:30:14] They got paid more.

[01:30:15] They were like the first announced too.

[01:30:16] Right.

[01:30:17] So Ford, Hamill, Fisher.

[01:30:18] Yes it should be Ford, Fisher, Hamill, whatever.

[01:30:19] Fourth build, Adam Driver.

[01:30:20] Yeah, Adam Driver, fourth build.

[01:30:21] Interesting billing order.

[01:30:22] Great performance I think.

[01:30:23] I give her a major thumbs up.

[01:30:24] I don't know how I was going to feel.

[01:30:25] Yeah, no, no.

[01:30:26] I think she's going to be like, oh, I'm going to be like,

[01:30:27] I'm going to be like, oh, I'm going to be like,

[01:30:29] I forgot, yeah, Adam Driver fourth build.

[01:30:30] Interesting billing order.

[01:30:31] Great performance I think.

[01:30:32] I give her a major thumbs up.

[01:30:33] I don't know how I was going to feel.

[01:30:34] Yeah no, he's good.

[01:30:35] He's good.

[01:30:36] I don't know about that billing order but whatever.

[01:30:38] I think it's a salary thing.

[01:30:39] I'm interested though that Oscar Isaac didn't get paid more?

[01:30:43] I know.

[01:30:44] I guess this is what I read.

[01:30:46] I read that the only people who got in the millions were the three legacy actors

[01:30:51] that Driver and Isaac got like between 500,000 and a million.

[01:30:57] Like between 300,000 and 600,000 I think as like more established actors

[01:31:02] and that Boyega and Daisy Ridley got like $100,000.

[01:31:06] But I mean it'll balloon right?

[01:31:08] That's the whole thing they sign those ballooning contracts.

[01:31:10] Yes, with bonuses and they get to make the other ones.

[01:31:11] Yeah.

[01:31:12] Anyway, Daisy Ridley is Ray.

[01:31:14] I mean great should be first bill.

[01:31:16] She's the lead of the movie.

[01:31:17] Sure.

[01:31:18] But even if you're going to put the legacy players first,

[01:31:20] she should be next after Adam Driver.

[01:31:22] It's true.

[01:31:23] But like a star making performance.

[01:31:24] Yeah.

[01:31:25] Yeah.

[01:31:26] What else?

[01:31:27] She's been in one other movie or something?

[01:31:28] She hasn't been in a movie.

[01:31:29] Not even.

[01:31:30] Oh.

[01:31:31] She was in one TV show.

[01:31:32] TV guest film.

[01:31:33] She played like a corpse in a British TV show once.

[01:31:34] Mr. Selfridge, the Jeremy Piven show.

[01:31:35] Oh yes, that's right.

[01:31:36] And has done short films.

[01:31:37] An amazing debut.

[01:31:38] Very curious to see if she goes on to like have a big career.

[01:31:41] I read it in a recent where she said she wants to go back to college.

[01:31:44] She might just be a Star Wars act.

[01:31:45] I don't know.

[01:31:46] But please call me if you want to get done.

[01:31:49] John Boyega.

[01:31:50] What a guy.

[01:31:51] I think he's so wonderful.

[01:31:53] He's really, really wonderful.

[01:31:54] He also I would say is probably the MVP of the press tour.

[01:31:57] Oh yeah.

[01:31:58] He's owning it.

[01:31:59] Yeah.

[01:32:00] The last guy.

[01:32:01] It's almost a little much.

[01:32:02] It's getting into Aaron Paul territory a little bit.

[01:32:06] Good call.

[01:32:07] Although he doesn't say bitch as much as Aaron Paul does.

[01:32:11] That's a major, major plus.

[01:32:13] Better to get in Aaron Paul territory than Piven territory.

[01:32:15] Piven is the king of going way too far.

[01:32:18] Yeah.

[01:32:19] Paul is like it's starting to get annoying.

[01:32:20] Boyega is still charming.

[01:32:21] No, he's still, he's very, very safe right now.

[01:32:23] I'm just saying like another month of this and I don't think there will be.

[01:32:27] No, probably not.

[01:32:28] He'll probably die with that.

[01:32:29] That's true.

[01:32:30] Yeah, maybe he'll do a whole China tour because it opens in China.

[01:32:32] But I love that he went to go see it at like his local theater.

[01:32:34] My friend went to go see the 34th Street on the Saturday after he came out.

[01:32:38] He was there.

[01:32:39] He just going around New York like going and being like apparently walked in and was like,

[01:32:43] yo, I just saw that chipmunks movie.

[01:32:45] Like that was his opening joke for each theater.

[01:32:47] It's a really good film of road trip.

[01:32:49] You should all see it.

[01:32:50] It's very much of a piece.

[01:32:51] Oscar Isaac is Poe Dameron.

[01:32:52] Can I make one point about Boyega first?

[01:32:54] Very quick.

[01:32:55] My former roommate best friend Sophie fader who listens to the podcast, you know,

[01:32:58] shout out to Sophie.

[01:32:59] I so calls a John Boyega and Daisy Ridley.

[01:33:01] She refers to the characters solely as I'm going to fuck this up.

[01:33:04] QT pine, sweetie heart, which I really like because she just thinks they're so adorable.

[01:33:08] They are very adorable.

[01:33:09] And we saw it again.

[01:33:10] She's going to go what about the part where QT pie says to sweetie heart?

[01:33:13] So QT pine, sweetheart.

[01:33:14] Great Oscar Isaac.

[01:33:15] Yes.

[01:33:16] What a guy.

[01:33:17] Everybody's great.

[01:33:18] Like everybody's great.

[01:33:19] Everybody's really good in this movie.

[01:33:20] There's no thumbs down in this movie.

[01:33:22] One performance that I am not crazy about would not say is bad.

[01:33:25] I'm not crazy about it.

[01:33:27] Lupinayango.

[01:33:28] Oh, I love her.

[01:33:29] No, I love her.

[01:33:30] We're totally in on her.

[01:33:31] That's not who I thought you were talking about.

[01:33:32] Do you think it was circus?

[01:33:33] No.

[01:33:34] Or do you think it was maximum side out?

[01:33:35] He doesn't like circus.

[01:33:36] No, I thought it was Donald Gleason.

[01:33:38] Oh, I liked him.

[01:33:39] I liked him mocking the Star Wars.

[01:33:43] I just think anybody could have played that part.

[01:33:45] And I don't know what he did to distinguish it.

[01:33:47] So we're discussing all three at once.

[01:33:48] Just make it clear.

[01:33:49] I'm not into circus.

[01:33:50] I'm not into circus.

[01:33:51] I don't like circus and I don't.

[01:33:52] I'm eh on Donald Gleason.

[01:33:54] Big on Lupita though.

[01:33:55] I wanted someone who sounded older.

[01:33:57] I think she's a great actress.

[01:33:58] Also sounded older by human standards.

[01:34:00] She's like a thousand year old crazy little Bjork alien.

[01:34:03] You're right.

[01:34:04] I'm feeling pretty pwned.

[01:34:05] I'm feeling like.

[01:34:06] Totally.

[01:34:07] Circus, I think is a good performance.

[01:34:08] I just hate the design of that character.

[01:34:10] You think it's good?

[01:34:11] He sucks.

[01:34:12] I do.

[01:34:13] I fucking hate it.

[01:34:14] I like it.

[01:34:15] I like it.

[01:34:16] I like it.

[01:34:17] I like it.

[01:34:18] I fucking hate it.

[01:34:19] I like that ham.

[01:34:20] I don't like Andy Circus guys.

[01:34:21] I like that family slice.

[01:34:22] How do you feel about Andy Circus?

[01:34:23] I think he's good as Gollum.

[01:34:25] Yeah.

[01:34:26] Caesar.

[01:34:27] My guy Caesar.

[01:34:28] I haven't, I've never seen any of those movies.

[01:34:30] You know what?

[01:34:31] I love him so much.

[01:34:32] I see him and I like him and then there's just.

[01:34:34] There's no emotion.

[01:34:35] See, I felt very emotionally moved by the Gollum performance.

[01:34:39] But the Gollum character.

[01:34:40] So.

[01:34:41] I like Gollum.

[01:34:42] I like that character.

[01:34:43] The Return of the King has too much Gollum.

[01:34:44] That's the only thing.

[01:34:45] No, I can't have too much Gollum.

[01:34:46] Gollum is the best part.

[01:34:47] Gollum's one of my favorite movies.

[01:34:48] Return of the King.

[01:34:49] A third of that movie is just them climbing up a mountain and it's, whatever.

[01:34:52] I used to have a shelf in my bedroom.

[01:34:53] It was just Gollum.

[01:34:54] I had like 18 different Gollums.

[01:34:56] No one's allowed it.

[01:34:57] A lot of garbage.

[01:34:58] A lot of bullshit.

[01:34:59] Anthony Daniels next build.

[01:35:00] Yeah.

[01:35:01] I mean.

[01:35:02] I just, his commitment.

[01:35:03] Good for him.

[01:35:04] You know, I was watching the Star Wars droids animated series which is cute if you guys

[01:35:09] ever want to watch it.

[01:35:10] It's Mox the prequels.

[01:35:11] Yeah.

[01:35:12] Droid Tales you're talking about.

[01:35:13] The Lego one.

[01:35:14] Do you want to?

[01:35:15] Makes a lot of the jokes that we make.

[01:35:16] Yeah, I know.

[01:35:17] Maybe it was curving from this point.

[01:35:18] But Anthony Daniels, I think is the only like Star Wars voice who actually like did the

[01:35:23] work to, you know, he'll always be C3PO.

[01:35:25] His voice is Obi-Wan in Clone Wars.

[01:35:28] It's whoever it is.

[01:35:29] Yeah.

[01:35:30] He's a voice actor.

[01:35:31] He does a lot of stuff.

[01:35:32] I'm forgetting his name now.

[01:35:34] I'm finding it.

[01:35:35] I'm finding it.

[01:35:36] If I am not mistaken, I believe Anthony Daniels has never not played C3PO including like

[01:35:40] commercials and stuff.

[01:35:41] Yeah.

[01:35:42] He'll show up.

[01:35:43] And there was a New York magazine profile on him that was really interesting.

[01:35:45] They talked about how big his house was and whatever and said that like he had tried getting

[01:35:49] some other parts after the original Star Wars.

[01:35:51] And then like since 1984 has done nothing but play C3PO in every incarnation.

[01:35:55] Wow.

[01:35:56] And he owns like five houses.

[01:35:57] His name is James Arnold Taylor and he's just a voice over actor.

[01:36:00] He's just, he was in Final Fantasy 10.

[01:36:02] Oh, I didn't play that one.

[01:36:05] Next build Peter Mayhew, little controversial because I think he's also in the suit

[01:36:10] for like 10% of the movie.

[01:36:12] Oh really?

[01:36:13] Yeah.

[01:36:14] There was a movie that came out today.

[01:36:15] Mayhew's like legs don't work anymore.

[01:36:17] And so he's playing Chewbacca whenever Chewbacca is sitting down and there's another guy who

[01:36:22] did like banker from Finland who played a Chewbacca for the rest of the movie.

[01:36:28] But it's a nice tip of the hat.

[01:36:30] Yeah.

[01:36:31] And Max Von Sido.

[01:36:32] Yeah.

[01:36:33] He's, I like him actually.

[01:36:34] Who is anti-Sido?

[01:36:35] No, I'm not anti-Sido.

[01:36:36] For some reason I thought you would be because he didn't love the character.

[01:36:39] He's one of the finest actors of all time.

[01:36:41] It's a little shocking to cast him in that part.

[01:36:43] Max Von Sido.

[01:36:44] Yeah, yeah and then he's gone.

[01:36:46] But when I watched it the second, the first time I was just like, the second and third

[01:36:50] time like, he nails the scene with Kylo Reitz.

[01:36:53] Yes he does.

[01:36:54] Good scene.

[01:36:55] Yeah.

[01:36:56] He's like something far worse has happened to you.

[01:36:58] Yeah.

[01:36:59] Pretty good Max Von Sido.

[01:37:00] That's really good actually.

[01:37:01] That's really good.

[01:37:02] I'll say two things.

[01:37:03] One, I heard a rumor that that was originally written to be Wedge and Tillies.

[01:37:07] That the actor Jeremy Lawson didn't want to do it.

[01:37:10] Lawson was just, he said in an interview like, I have no interest in doing that.

[01:37:13] Which is interesting.

[01:37:14] He did all three original movies.

[01:37:16] Yeah.

[01:37:17] Isn't he U.M. McGregor's uncle?

[01:37:20] Yes.

[01:37:21] And he's also in the superb BBC miniseries.

[01:37:24] He's the lead of the superb BBC miniseries Bleak House which is the

[01:37:28] greatest Dickens adaptation ever committed to television.

[01:37:31] Is that the one with Gillian Anderson?

[01:37:32] With Gillian Anderson that was filmed in half hour episodes that aired

[01:37:35] every single day like a soap opera.

[01:37:37] The only time Dickens has been nailed because of that.

[01:37:39] Like it's supposed to be a serial.

[01:37:40] That's how you should watch, yeah, yeah, yeah.

[01:37:42] Yes.

[01:37:43] And he's the lead of it along with Gillian Anderson and he's real good.

[01:37:45] New Ex-Files.

[01:37:46] Yeah, Ex-Files?

[01:37:47] He's on the Ex-Files?

[01:37:48] New Ex-Files.

[01:37:49] This is going to be New Ex-Files.

[01:37:50] Oh, New Ex-Files.

[01:37:51] Very excited about that.

[01:37:52] I think that Max Von Sido is a little distracting in the film.

[01:37:55] I think he does an excellent job.

[01:37:57] Great job.

[01:37:58] Hearing the Wedge and Tillies thing, that makes a lot of sense

[01:37:59] because it feels like they just bring a character in with some sense

[01:38:01] of established history and relationship and then kill him off.

[01:38:05] I would like for in future films, especially spin-off movies,

[01:38:08] if they're set in earlier times to do young Laura Santacca stuff

[01:38:11] so we can have more of a relationship to that character.

[01:38:14] I also wish this is just me being a stickler about billing order by now.

[01:38:17] You're one of the few people who could relate to this.

[01:38:19] I love billing orders.

[01:38:20] If it had not been a well-known actor like Max Von Sido,

[01:38:22] if it had been Dennis Lawson who probably would have not commanded a

[01:38:25] and billing, they could have done a billing where it was Harrison Ford,

[01:38:28] Kerry Fisher, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley,

[01:38:30] and Mark Hamill, which that's what he really deserves is and Mark Hamill.

[01:38:34] I think they were never going to bump down that far.

[01:38:36] I think that's a big but what he deserves is the rare featuring,

[01:38:40] to be honest.

[01:38:41] There should be a with Lupita and Max and then special appearance

[01:38:45] or whatever, which the Lord of the Rings movies would always bust out

[01:38:47] because they had too many famous guys.

[01:38:50] I have to go to rehearsal next door.

[01:38:52] Emily's got to go.

[01:38:53] I got to get this table.

[01:38:54] I've got nothing but you know.

[01:38:56] I want to do one thing.

[01:38:57] I feel like if we could end the episode this way,

[01:39:00] I'd like to announce what our next mini series is.

[01:39:02] We're really locked into it.

[01:39:04] I think we might do one more one off maybe we should just dive in.

[01:39:07] We're debating, but we can formally announced now a blank check

[01:39:11] Colin with Griffin David Colin will present our next mini series,

[01:39:15] P-Cast Shyamalan.

[01:39:17] Wait, what is it called?

[01:39:19] It's called P-Cast Shyamalan.

[01:39:21] No, it's not called that, but it is about M. Night Shyamalan.

[01:39:24] Shyamalan.

[01:39:25] I've already started working in the Photoshop.

[01:39:26] It's locked in.

[01:39:27] It's called P-Cast Shyamalan.

[01:39:28] It's going to be a 10 part mini series.

[01:39:30] Yes.

[01:39:31] Where we go through one by one the films of M. Night Shyamalan

[01:39:33] and in our class of investigative style,

[01:39:35] hard hitting journalism,

[01:39:36] we try to figure out is M. Night Shyamalan a good filmmaker?

[01:39:41] Sure.

[01:39:42] Is it possible he's a good filmmaker

[01:39:43] even if the majority of his films are bad

[01:39:45] and maybe reassess whether all those films are bad?

[01:39:47] Yeah, some of them.

[01:39:48] So very fascinating by him.

[01:39:49] So P-Cast Shyamalan coming your way.

[01:39:51] Maybe one off, maybe not.

[01:39:52] Emily, thank you so much for being here.

[01:39:54] Thank you for having me.

[01:39:55] Emily, it was a delight to have you on the podcast.

[01:39:56] It was so fun.

[01:39:57] Anything you want to plug specifically?

[01:39:59] I don't know.

[01:40:00] We're good a website called theverge.com.

[01:40:03] I never write anything on it,

[01:40:04] but I haven't, I don't know when this goes up,

[01:40:06] but I have a review of The Forest starring Natalie Darver.

[01:40:10] Japanese white people go to the Japanese

[01:40:11] Suicide Forest level?

[01:40:12] It is bad!

[01:40:14] Oh, that is not surprising.

[01:40:16] It's not a good movie.

[01:40:17] And now I've seen both of them.

[01:40:18] I saw Sea of Trees.

[01:40:19] Which one's better?

[01:40:21] Good question.

[01:40:22] Yes.

[01:40:23] You were telling me how badly Sea of Trees

[01:40:24] got booed at the Camp in the hospital.

[01:40:26] Yeah, I got booed like every single screening.

[01:40:28] That's a Gus Van Sant picture.

[01:40:30] Yeah, it's um...

[01:40:31] So yeah, Forest or...

[01:40:33] I'd rather watch The Forest again if I had to pick one.

[01:40:35] Is The Forest like a tight like 85 minute

[01:40:37] like sort of silly little thing?

[01:40:39] It's a trifle.

[01:40:40] It's a trifle.

[01:40:41] No, it's real bad.

[01:40:44] We'll read that review.

[01:40:46] Follow Emily on Twitter.

[01:40:48] Emily Yoshida, she's got a little boo avatar.

[01:40:50] A little scared boo.

[01:40:52] Yeah, that's my story.

[01:40:54] Stick into it.

[01:40:55] And you have a podcast, sort of?

[01:40:57] I do.

[01:40:58] Oh, that's what I should actually plug.

[01:41:00] Yeah, so I have a podcast that I host with the

[01:41:04] Verge Science Editor, Liz Lepato.

[01:41:06] It's called ESP, which stands for

[01:41:08] Entertainment and Science Podcast.

[01:41:10] And it has been on hiatus for the last month plus,

[01:41:14] but we are coming back with a vengeance next week,

[01:41:17] the 15th, I believe.

[01:41:19] And we were bi-weekly, but now we're going to be

[01:41:21] every week talking about weird science stuff

[01:41:24] and interesting art and entertainment stuff.

[01:41:27] Listen to that, listen to all our other

[01:41:29] UCB comedy, brethren, podcasts,

[01:41:32] rate reviews, subscribe to those shows,

[01:41:34] but to our show as well.
