[00:00:22] [SPEAKER_01]: Hello!

[00:00:24] [SPEAKER_01]: I know.

[00:00:26] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh, I see what you did there.

[00:00:29] [SPEAKER_03]: You see what I did?

[00:00:30] [SPEAKER_03]: Hey Griffin.

[00:00:31] [SPEAKER_03]: Hey David.

[00:00:32] [SPEAKER_03]: How are we doing?

[00:00:33] [SPEAKER_03]: I think I'm doing great.

[00:00:35] [SPEAKER_03]: Uh...

[00:00:35] [SPEAKER_03]: A little loopy.

[00:00:36] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm a little loopy.

[00:00:37] [SPEAKER_03]: I also, I thought there was a gas leak in my apartment and I came here pretty feeling pretty lightheaded and I just got an email from my landlord telling me that it was just welding that was happening making a terrible odor.

[00:00:48] [SPEAKER_03]: So I'm still feeling loopy but now I'm relieved.

[00:00:50] [SPEAKER_03]: Important information.

[00:00:52] [SPEAKER_03]: Thank you for that information.

[00:00:53] [SPEAKER_03]: Welcome to the Podcast Strikes Back.

[00:00:57] [SPEAKER_03]: We're striking back motherfuckers!

[00:00:58] [SPEAKER_03]: Alright.

[00:00:59] [SPEAKER_03]: Griffin and David present the podcast strikes back.

[00:01:02] [SPEAKER_03]: We started this podcasting franchise out as an exploration of the Star Wars episode 1 The Phantom Mask, the George Lucas film.

[00:01:10] [SPEAKER_03]: This is true.

[00:01:11] [SPEAKER_03]: We then found out there was a second film.

[00:01:13] [SPEAKER_03]: Whoa!

[00:01:13] [SPEAKER_03]: Attack the Clones.

[00:01:14] [SPEAKER_03]: Huh?

[00:01:16] [SPEAKER_03]: The Clones Attacked.

[00:01:17] [SPEAKER_03]: Okay well let's close the book.

[00:01:19] [SPEAKER_03]: Wait what?

[00:01:19] [SPEAKER_03]: There's another chapter.

[00:01:21] [SPEAKER_03]: Revenge of the Sith.

[00:01:22] [SPEAKER_03]: Revenge of the Sith.

[00:01:22] [SPEAKER_03]: The Sith are getting revenge.

[00:01:24] [SPEAKER_02]: They never say the word Sith in these original movies.

[00:01:26] [SPEAKER_02]: No not at all.

[00:01:27] [SPEAKER_03]: They say it a lot in the original movies.

[00:01:29] [SPEAKER_03]: The sequel trilogy.

[00:01:29] [SPEAKER_03]: They don't say it at all.

[00:01:32] [SPEAKER_03]: We were sure that the book was closed.

[00:01:34] [SPEAKER_03]: Then he took a new volume off the shelf, George.

[00:01:36] [SPEAKER_03]: And he went, guess what?

[00:01:37] [SPEAKER_03]: I made these in the 70s.

[00:01:38] [SPEAKER_03]: Crazy.

[00:01:39] [SPEAKER_03]: I worked on them.

[00:01:40] [SPEAKER_03]: I tinkered on them for decades.

[00:01:40] [SPEAKER_03]: 70s and 80s.

[00:01:42] [SPEAKER_03]: Right.

[00:01:42] [SPEAKER_03]: And then yeah this one came out in 1980.

[00:01:44] [SPEAKER_03]: So last week we talked about Star Wars Episode IV New Hope.

[00:01:50] [SPEAKER_03]: Boom.

[00:01:52] [SPEAKER_03]: On an episode called A New Podcast.

[00:01:54] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:01:55] [SPEAKER_02]: It's in some classic.

[00:01:57] [SPEAKER_02]: The Library of Congress is already constructing a whole wing around it.

[00:01:59] [SPEAKER_02]: Unbelievable that we didn't even know about it.

[00:02:02] [SPEAKER_02]: It's really stupid.

[00:02:03] [SPEAKER_03]: I hate bits.

[00:02:05] [SPEAKER_03]: Empire Strikes Back.

[00:02:06] [SPEAKER_03]: Empire Strikes Back.

[00:02:07] [SPEAKER_03]: The fifth film.

[00:02:07] [SPEAKER_03]: And here's, I just want to do a little announcement here.

[00:02:10] [SPEAKER_03]: Little announcement.

[00:02:10] [SPEAKER_03]: Ooh.

[00:02:11] [SPEAKER_03]: As you may or may not know, we didn't know.

[00:02:15] [SPEAKER_03]: There is a new Star Wars movie coming out.

[00:02:17] [SPEAKER_03]: J.J. Abrams directed.

[00:02:19] [SPEAKER_03]: The Force Awakens.

[00:02:20] [SPEAKER_03]: Episode VII.

[00:02:21] [SPEAKER_03]: So I guess in Episode VI the force is going to take a nap.

[00:02:24] [SPEAKER_03]: Fall asleep.

[00:02:24] [SPEAKER_03]: At least take a nap.

[00:02:26] [SPEAKER_03]: Okay.

[00:02:27] [SPEAKER_03]: We have bought our tickets.

[00:02:29] [SPEAKER_03]: We have.

[00:02:29] [SPEAKER_03]: I had to return my tickets for Alvin the Chipmunks for the road trip.

[00:02:33] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[00:02:33] [SPEAKER_03]: Because they book are out on the same night.

[00:02:35] [SPEAKER_03]: It's fine.

[00:02:35] [SPEAKER_03]: I'll go see it the next day.

[00:02:36] [SPEAKER_03]: It's fine.

[00:02:37] [SPEAKER_03]: I got a good secondary market price for it too.

[00:02:40] [SPEAKER_03]: Because there was, I had like IMAX opening night.

[00:02:44] [SPEAKER_02]: Imagine if there was an IMAX that was showing the road trip.

[00:02:47] [SPEAKER_03]: Any IMAX screen in this country.

[00:02:49] [SPEAKER_02]: There was.

[00:02:49] [SPEAKER_03]: Yes.

[00:02:50] [SPEAKER_03]: No, there was.

[00:02:50] [SPEAKER_03]: I was going to New Brunswick to see the road trip and IMAX.

[00:02:53] [SPEAKER_03]: And I sold my tickets for a good price because it was sold out screening.

[00:02:55] [SPEAKER_03]: Anyway, we're going to see Star Wars, The Force Awakens on December 17th.

[00:03:01] [SPEAKER_03]: Whoa.

[00:03:01] [SPEAKER_03]: The next morning we're going to wake up, come here, record an episode.

[00:03:05] [SPEAKER_03]: Whoa.

[00:03:07] [SPEAKER_03]: Now we want to get that episode out to you folks.

[00:03:10] [SPEAKER_03]: We don't want it sitting on a shelf because this is going to be some hot takes, hot and fresh takes.

[00:03:14] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm wiping off the sweat of the hot take.

[00:03:16] [SPEAKER_03]: So what does that mean?

[00:03:18] [SPEAKER_03]: That means that with the schedule we have right now to make sure that we watch these

[00:03:22] [SPEAKER_03]: movies properly.

[00:03:24] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[00:03:24] [SPEAKER_03]: Cover them properly.

[00:03:25] [SPEAKER_03]: And then get out the episode seven in time.

[00:03:28] [SPEAKER_03]: Guess what?

[00:03:29] [SPEAKER_03]: It's a, it's a pre-Christmas miracle.

[00:03:31] [SPEAKER_03]: It's a twofer.

[00:03:32] [SPEAKER_03]: You got two episodes coming down the pike this week.

[00:03:34] [SPEAKER_03]: Wow.

[00:03:35] [SPEAKER_03]: So right now this is your normal Monday episode and then coming later this week at a day of

[00:03:40] [SPEAKER_03]: the week we have not decided yet.

[00:03:41] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, at some point.

[00:03:42] [SPEAKER_03]: You will get probably like a Thursday return of the podcast Wednesday or a Thursday.

[00:03:47] [SPEAKER_03]: Right, Benny?

[00:03:48] [SPEAKER_00]: Let's say Thursday.

[00:03:49] [SPEAKER_03]: So check that feed.

[00:03:50] [SPEAKER_03]: You're going to have today if you're listening to this right off the presses, the podcast

[00:03:55] [SPEAKER_03]: strikes back later in the week, return of the podcast and then the following Monday

[00:03:59] [SPEAKER_03]: on our normal day, the podcast awakens.

[00:04:03] [SPEAKER_03]: Might be a Christmas special in there too.

[00:04:05] [SPEAKER_03]: Why am I saying might?

[00:04:06] [SPEAKER_03]: Why play coy?

[00:04:06] [SPEAKER_03]: There's going to be a Christmas special.

[00:04:08] [SPEAKER_03]: The podcast holiday special is going to happen.

[00:04:11] [SPEAKER_03]: And then we are never going to talk about Star Wars ever again.

[00:04:13] [SPEAKER_03]: Now, if you asked me two weeks ago I would have gone good, ridden.

[00:04:17] [SPEAKER_03]: Don't need to talk about these movies ever again.

[00:04:19] [SPEAKER_03]: Holy shit.

[00:04:20] [SPEAKER_03]: Little did we know.

[00:04:23] [SPEAKER_02]: This movie's crazy.

[00:04:24] [SPEAKER_02]: David, this movie is really good, right?

[00:04:27] [SPEAKER_02]: It's amazing.

[00:04:28] [SPEAKER_02]: Here's the weird thing about it.

[00:04:29] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:04:29] [SPEAKER_02]: George Lucas didn't make it.

[00:04:30] [SPEAKER_02]: Okay, now this is huge.

[00:04:32] [SPEAKER_02]: This movie is called Star Wars Episode 5 The Empire Strikes Back.

[00:04:35] [SPEAKER_02]: Cool title.

[00:04:35] [SPEAKER_02]: It's directed by a motherfucker called Irvin Kirschner.

[00:04:37] [SPEAKER_02]: Director of Spies.

[00:04:38] [SPEAKER_03]: The director of RoboCop 2.

[00:04:40] [SPEAKER_03]: I mean, here's the thing.

[00:04:42] [SPEAKER_03]: I love RoboCop.

[00:04:44] [SPEAKER_03]: RoboCop is probably my favorite sci-fi movie of all time.

[00:04:46] [SPEAKER_03]: It's probably my fourth favorite movie ever.

[00:04:48] [SPEAKER_03]: RoboCop's the best.

[00:04:49] [SPEAKER_03]: It's the best.

[00:04:50] [SPEAKER_02]: It's not my favorite sci-fi movie of all time.

[00:04:52] [SPEAKER_02]: That's crazy.

[00:04:53] [SPEAKER_03]: But it is awesome.

[00:04:54] [SPEAKER_03]: Well, the only reason I put it lower is whether or not it's hard

[00:04:57] [SPEAKER_03]: sci-fi or whatever.

[00:04:58] [SPEAKER_03]: But RoboCop, there are three movies in history I like more than RoboCop.

[00:05:02] [SPEAKER_03]: Wait, what are they?

[00:05:04] [SPEAKER_03]: Toy Story 2.

[00:05:06] [SPEAKER_03]: You're so weird.

[00:05:08] [SPEAKER_03]: Rushmore and Robert Altman's Booster McClap.

[00:05:11] [SPEAKER_03]: You're so fucking weird.

[00:05:12] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I'm a weirdo.

[00:05:14] [SPEAKER_03]: Go on.

[00:05:14] [SPEAKER_03]: Not necessarily in that order, but those four films,

[00:05:17] [SPEAKER_03]: along with Sydney Lumet's The Wiz,

[00:05:20] [SPEAKER_03]: probably comprise my top five favorite movies of all time.

[00:05:22] [SPEAKER_03]: Interesting.

[00:05:23] [SPEAKER_03]: RoboCop is my number two film of 1987.

[00:05:26] [SPEAKER_03]: What's number one?

[00:05:26] [SPEAKER_03]: Broadcaster.

[00:05:27] [SPEAKER_03]: Get the fuck out of here.

[00:05:28] [SPEAKER_03]: I love Broadcast News 2.

[00:05:29] [SPEAKER_03]: That's maybe 15 on my list, on my all-timer list.

[00:05:33] [SPEAKER_03]: Anyway, RoboCop 2 I hate.

[00:05:36] [SPEAKER_03]: I have never been able to watch...

[00:05:37] [SPEAKER_03]: RoboCop 2 is dog shit.

[00:05:38] [SPEAKER_03]: All the way through.

[00:05:39] [SPEAKER_03]: It's garbage.

[00:05:39] [SPEAKER_03]: So if you said to me, oh guess what?

[00:05:42] [SPEAKER_03]: The director of Never Say Never Again and RoboCop 2

[00:05:45] [SPEAKER_03]: made a Star Wars movie.

[00:05:47] [SPEAKER_03]: It's gonna do a Star Wars movie.

[00:05:47] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh, so I loved RoboCop and then he took RoboCop

[00:05:50] [SPEAKER_03]: and turned it into that.

[00:05:51] [SPEAKER_03]: I finally liked a Star Wars movie.

[00:05:53] [SPEAKER_02]: The director of The Flimflam Man and the Return of a Man

[00:05:56] [SPEAKER_02]: called Horse.

[00:05:57] [SPEAKER_02]: You give me...

[00:05:58] [SPEAKER_02]: These are films that he made.

[00:06:00] [SPEAKER_03]: A real Star Wars movie for once,

[00:06:01] [SPEAKER_03]: and you're gonna tell me that you're gonna hand

[00:06:03] [SPEAKER_03]: that movie retroactively.

[00:06:07] [SPEAKER_03]: To the guy who directed RoboCop 2,

[00:06:10] [SPEAKER_03]: you're gonna hand him retroactively.

[00:06:13] [SPEAKER_03]: A Star Wars movie, Episode 5,

[00:06:15] [SPEAKER_03]: after the first one that worked,

[00:06:17] [SPEAKER_03]: I would say go take a hike.

[00:06:19] [SPEAKER_03]: Suck a lemon, sit on it.

[00:06:21] [SPEAKER_02]: Here's the premise of Return of a Man Called Horse,

[00:06:24] [SPEAKER_02]: which came out in 1976, one year before Star Wars.

[00:06:27] [SPEAKER_02]: The English gentleman known as Horse

[00:06:29] [SPEAKER_02]: returns to the American West

[00:06:30] [SPEAKER_02]: to save his adopted Indian tribe from extinction.

[00:06:36] [SPEAKER_02]: So there you go.

[00:06:38] [SPEAKER_02]: This is an interesting...

[00:06:39] [SPEAKER_02]: That's the movie he made before...

[00:06:40] [SPEAKER_02]: No, actually he made Eyes of Lord Mars,

[00:06:42] [SPEAKER_02]: which is actually really good movie.

[00:06:42] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh, that movie's good.

[00:06:43] [SPEAKER_02]: I didn't know he directed that.

[00:06:44] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh, really?

[00:06:45] [SPEAKER_02]: It's his best non-Empire Strikes Back movie.

[00:06:48] [SPEAKER_03]: Well, that's the important point here.

[00:06:49] [SPEAKER_03]: It's fucking Kirsch.

[00:06:50] [SPEAKER_03]: I love him.

[00:06:51] [SPEAKER_03]: He hit it out of the park.

[00:06:52] [SPEAKER_03]: But he destroyed this movie.

[00:06:55] [SPEAKER_03]: Now George definitely has a lot of influence on it.

[00:06:58] [SPEAKER_03]: It's not like he just handed over the reins to someone else.

[00:07:00] [SPEAKER_02]: That is true, but George Lucas is not even credited

[00:07:03] [SPEAKER_02]: as writing the screenplay.

[00:07:04] [SPEAKER_02]: He's a story credit.

[00:07:05] [SPEAKER_03]: He's a story credit.

[00:07:07] [SPEAKER_03]: Do you know what I would compare it to?

[00:07:10] [SPEAKER_03]: Please go ahead.

[00:07:11] [SPEAKER_03]: I would say that George kind of functioned as the showrunner.

[00:07:14] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, it's sort of like with Clone Wars.

[00:07:17] [SPEAKER_03]: He stepped back from the franchise

[00:07:18] [SPEAKER_03]: so he could oversee the bigger picture thing.

[00:07:20] [SPEAKER_03]: I think he also became very, very involved in merchandising.

[00:07:24] [SPEAKER_02]: Yes.

[00:07:25] [SPEAKER_02]: As we had not touched on it in Star Wars

[00:07:27] [SPEAKER_02]: because we just didn't have the time last week,

[00:07:29] [SPEAKER_02]: but that movie was basically like the beginning

[00:07:32] [SPEAKER_02]: of the whole merchandising thing.

[00:07:34] [SPEAKER_02]: You can't even do a merchandise spotlight

[00:07:36] [SPEAKER_02]: because there's too much to cover.

[00:07:36] [SPEAKER_02]: It's too much.

[00:07:37] [SPEAKER_02]: George had as like a sort of sneaky little clause

[00:07:40] [SPEAKER_02]: in his contract total control over the merchant merchandising.

[00:07:42] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh, do you know what the exact contract was?

[00:07:44] [SPEAKER_03]: Go ahead.

[00:07:44] [SPEAKER_03]: This is one of the smartest businesses in his-

[00:07:46] [SPEAKER_03]: The film was released and owned by 20th Century Fox.

[00:07:48] [SPEAKER_03]: Right.

[00:07:50] [SPEAKER_03]: So George Lucas wanted to make the Star Wars.

[00:07:53] [SPEAKER_03]: Evan was like, you lunatic.

[00:07:55] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, people were not into it.

[00:07:57] [SPEAKER_03]: Go ahead and turn.

[00:07:58] [SPEAKER_02]: He made two movies.

[00:07:58] [SPEAKER_02]: He'd made American Graffiti, like an THX film with 38.

[00:08:01] [SPEAKER_02]: But even pre-American Graffiti, he was pitching Star Wars.

[00:08:03] [SPEAKER_02]: No, no, no.

[00:08:04] [SPEAKER_03]: And have you seen some of the early pitches

[00:08:05] [SPEAKER_03]: for this thing that's demented?

[00:08:07] [SPEAKER_03]: Incomprehensible.

[00:08:08] [SPEAKER_03]: Incomprehensible.

[00:08:09] [SPEAKER_03]: With the help of a woman named Marsha Lucas

[00:08:14] [SPEAKER_03]: who was his wife, she kind of went,

[00:08:16] [SPEAKER_03]: George, what are you actually trying to get out here?

[00:08:17] [SPEAKER_03]: Helped streamline a lot of it.

[00:08:19] [SPEAKER_03]: Finally they went to 20th Century Fox, Alan Ladd,

[00:08:22] [SPEAKER_03]: who is notably a very outside-the-box thinker

[00:08:24] [SPEAKER_03]: for a major studio head.

[00:08:27] [SPEAKER_03]: Right?

[00:08:28] [SPEAKER_03]: Just went, I don't know if this thing makes any sense.

[00:08:30] [SPEAKER_03]: But I loved American Graffiti.

[00:08:32] [SPEAKER_03]: I think this is a guy worth betting on.

[00:08:34] [SPEAKER_03]: Right.

[00:08:34] [SPEAKER_03]: Now just really important context.

[00:08:36] [SPEAKER_03]: Within the same year or the year before,

[00:08:39] [SPEAKER_03]: Robert Altman is picked up in a town car

[00:08:46] [SPEAKER_03]: to go to the airport to fly to New York.

[00:08:49] [SPEAKER_02]: Where's this go?

[00:08:50] [SPEAKER_03]: This is important, I think.

[00:08:51] [SPEAKER_03]: Go on.

[00:08:53] [SPEAKER_03]: And he's talking to his driver and he's like,

[00:08:56] [SPEAKER_03]: I had this really weird dream last night.

[00:09:00] [SPEAKER_03]: It's like a woman and then another woman,

[00:09:04] [SPEAKER_03]: the one woman was in the pool and then the other woman saved

[00:09:08] [SPEAKER_03]: and then it's like the woman flipped

[00:09:10] [SPEAKER_03]: and he was trying to explain the dream

[00:09:11] [SPEAKER_03]: and he couldn't really remember it totally.

[00:09:13] [SPEAKER_03]: And they were driving to the airport

[00:09:15] [SPEAKER_03]: and they drove past the 20th Century Fox lot

[00:09:17] [SPEAKER_03]: and he was like,

[00:09:18] [SPEAKER_03]: what do you mind, how much time do we have until the flight?

[00:09:20] [SPEAKER_03]: It's like an hour, an hour 15.

[00:09:22] [SPEAKER_03]: What do you mind pulling in here?

[00:09:23] [SPEAKER_03]: I'll just be like 10 minutes.

[00:09:24] [SPEAKER_03]: Robert only gets out of the car.

[00:09:25] [SPEAKER_03]: He's gone for like 10, 15 minutes.

[00:09:27] [SPEAKER_03]: He comes back in.

[00:09:28] [SPEAKER_03]: He's like, okay, I sold it to Fox.

[00:09:29] [SPEAKER_02]: Okay.

[00:09:30] [SPEAKER_03]: They're like what?

[00:09:31] [SPEAKER_03]: And he was like, yeah, the dream I was just describing.

[00:09:33] [SPEAKER_03]: I went to Alan Ladd and I pitched it to him

[00:09:35] [SPEAKER_03]: and he gave me a green light.

[00:09:36] [SPEAKER_03]: And that was three-way.

[00:09:38] [SPEAKER_03]: Great movie.

[00:09:39] [SPEAKER_03]: My point is that Alan Ladd was that outside the box.

[00:09:41] [SPEAKER_03]: Right.

[00:09:42] [SPEAKER_03]: Robert Altman could come into his office

[00:09:43] [SPEAKER_03]: and pitch a dream on the way to the airport

[00:09:45] [SPEAKER_03]: and give it a budget, right?

[00:09:47] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[00:09:48] [SPEAKER_03]: And so Star Wars, which now looks like

[00:09:50] [SPEAKER_03]: what is mostly populating the film landscape.

[00:09:53] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, Star Wars is basically copied by every movie.

[00:09:55] [SPEAKER_03]: But at the time was viewed as a big risk

[00:09:57] [SPEAKER_03]: and everyone else passed on it.

[00:09:58] [SPEAKER_03]: And Alan Ladd was like,

[00:09:59] [SPEAKER_03]: green-lit a Robert Altman dream.

[00:10:01] [SPEAKER_03]: Why not green like this?

[00:10:02] [SPEAKER_03]: American Graffiti was a big hit.

[00:10:03] [SPEAKER_03]: The guy has a track record.

[00:10:04] [SPEAKER_03]: Sounds interesting.

[00:10:05] [SPEAKER_03]: Sounds different.

[00:10:05] [SPEAKER_02]: We should say, by the way,

[00:10:06] [SPEAKER_02]: I think green lighting three women

[00:10:07] [SPEAKER_02]: was a financially ruinous decision by Alan Ladd.

[00:10:10] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, but guess what?

[00:10:11] [SPEAKER_03]: Star Wars got the same year.

[00:10:13] [SPEAKER_03]: I believe both were 1977.

[00:10:16] [SPEAKER_03]: That's probably true, but I'm just...

[00:10:17] [SPEAKER_03]: So I don't know if one started production earlier

[00:10:19] [SPEAKER_03]: and the other because Star Wars probably had a longer lead time.

[00:10:21] [SPEAKER_03]: But they were like right around the same time,

[00:10:23] [SPEAKER_03]: which is why I want to tell that story.

[00:10:25] [SPEAKER_03]: Also, I think that's like the funniest story in the world.

[00:10:26] [SPEAKER_03]: That he pitched a dream on the way to the airport

[00:10:29] [SPEAKER_03]: and the movie is wonderful,

[00:10:31] [SPEAKER_03]: but also like...

[00:10:32] [SPEAKER_03]: It's a bit great.

[00:10:33] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[00:10:33] [SPEAKER_02]: Let's get back to the Empire Strikes Back

[00:10:35] [SPEAKER_02]: because I want to point out who wrote this movie.

[00:10:38] [SPEAKER_03]: Alan Ladd.

[00:10:39] [SPEAKER_03]: Okay.

[00:10:39] [SPEAKER_03]: Gives a green light to Star Wars.

[00:10:40] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[00:10:42] [SPEAKER_03]: But they didn't want to give him the budget they wanted.

[00:10:43] [SPEAKER_03]: The budget was so huge because all the things he wanted to realize.

[00:10:45] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh, right, we're all immersion-dising.

[00:10:46] [SPEAKER_03]: Right, right, right.

[00:10:47] [SPEAKER_03]: So George Lucas had a pretty high quote that point

[00:10:49] [SPEAKER_03]: because American graffiti was huge.

[00:10:51] [SPEAKER_03]: He was an Oscar nominee.

[00:10:51] [SPEAKER_03]: He was Oscar nominee in two categories.

[00:10:53] [SPEAKER_03]: Huge, right?

[00:10:55] [SPEAKER_03]: So he goes,

[00:10:55] [SPEAKER_03]: Okay, I'll wave my director's face.

[00:10:58] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, don't pay me.

[00:10:58] [SPEAKER_03]: Don't pay me, period.

[00:11:01] [SPEAKER_03]: We can put that back into the budget of the film.

[00:11:04] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[00:11:04] [SPEAKER_03]: Production budget.

[00:11:05] [SPEAKER_03]: In exchange,

[00:11:06] [SPEAKER_03]: I and perpetuity own the rights...

[00:11:09] [SPEAKER_03]: To the sequels.

[00:11:10] [SPEAKER_03]: And the merchandising.

[00:11:12] [SPEAKER_03]: Pretty good.

[00:11:14] [SPEAKER_00]: Fucking amazing.

[00:11:15] [SPEAKER_02]: Well, I think because back then it was like

[00:11:18] [SPEAKER_02]: merchandising, what, like posters?

[00:11:20] [SPEAKER_02]: Like sequels?

[00:11:21] [SPEAKER_03]: You think you're gonna make a sequel to this thing?

[00:11:23] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, alright, alright, well fine.

[00:11:24] [SPEAKER_03]: You can have that shit.

[00:11:25] [SPEAKER_03]: So...

[00:11:26] [SPEAKER_03]: That's the last time that deal was ever made.

[00:11:28] [SPEAKER_03]: Yep.

[00:11:29] [SPEAKER_03]: No one will ever get a deal like that.

[00:11:30] [SPEAKER_03]: No, now the studio is like, yeah.

[00:11:32] [SPEAKER_03]: Ever again.

[00:11:33] [SPEAKER_03]: Ever again.

[00:11:35] [SPEAKER_03]: Good job, Georgie.

[00:11:36] [SPEAKER_03]: Great job, Georgie.

[00:11:36] [SPEAKER_02]: So he's the producer of Empire.

[00:11:38] [SPEAKER_02]: This is an almost independent film.

[00:11:40] [SPEAKER_02]: Story by George Lucas, yes.

[00:11:42] [SPEAKER_02]: He has the story, he has the idea.

[00:11:44] [SPEAKER_02]: It's written up by Lee Brackett.

[00:11:47] [SPEAKER_02]: Who I believe was an older woman.

[00:11:48] [SPEAKER_02]: No, she was like, yeah, 60-year-old woman

[00:11:51] [SPEAKER_02]: who had written like The Big Sleep,

[00:11:53] [SPEAKER_02]: Rio Bravo, all these old noir movies.

[00:11:56] [SPEAKER_02]: But she got sick or died during writing, right?

[00:11:59] [SPEAKER_03]: She died in 1978.

[00:12:02] [SPEAKER_03]: Wow.

[00:12:03] [SPEAKER_03]: I think she got too sick to finish it, so she...

[00:12:05] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

[00:12:06] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, she died, you're right.

[00:12:07] [SPEAKER_03]: He hired her in 1977 after the movie came out and she died.

[00:12:10] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I mean, she definitely wrote a script

[00:12:13] [SPEAKER_02]: and died of cancer.

[00:12:14] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:12:15] [SPEAKER_02]: But it does seem like a lot of the script is, you know,

[00:12:19] [SPEAKER_02]: Lawrence Castor.

[00:12:20] [SPEAKER_03]: Now this was his first produced screenplay?

[00:12:23] [SPEAKER_03]: That sounds right.

[00:12:24] [SPEAKER_03]: He was a young buck, he'd been writing last off.

[00:12:25] [SPEAKER_03]: A couple of his specs have been traveling around town.

[00:12:27] [SPEAKER_03]: This is his first screenplay.

[00:12:28] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, he had a lot of he's...

[00:12:30] [SPEAKER_02]: His second screenplay is a little film called

[00:12:31] [SPEAKER_02]: Raiders of the Lost Ark.

[00:12:32] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, a guy came out of the gate strong

[00:12:35] [SPEAKER_03]: and then finally got to make these small white people

[00:12:37] [SPEAKER_03]: domestic dramas that he wanted to, domestic drama.

[00:12:40] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:12:40] [SPEAKER_02]: What's the best Lawrence Castor movie that he directed

[00:12:43] [SPEAKER_02]: in your opinion?

[00:12:44] [SPEAKER_02]: Is it The Big Chill?

[00:12:45] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh no, it's Body Heat.

[00:12:45] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, it's Body Heat, no question.

[00:12:46] [SPEAKER_02]: Accidental Tourist is good too.

[00:12:48] [SPEAKER_02]: His 80s career is great and then his 90s career is not great.

[00:12:52] [SPEAKER_02]: His 2000s career is abysmal.

[00:12:54] [SPEAKER_02]: Well, his 2000s career is Dreamcatcher.

[00:12:56] [SPEAKER_02]: Mumford?

[00:12:57] [SPEAKER_02]: Mumford's actually 99.

[00:12:59] [SPEAKER_03]: What about Darling Companion?

[00:13:00] [SPEAKER_03]: Have you seen Darling Companion?

[00:13:01] [SPEAKER_03]: I have not.

[00:13:02] [SPEAKER_03]: I can't tell you how much I hate that movie.

[00:13:03] [SPEAKER_03]: Here's a story I've never told you before.

[00:13:05] [SPEAKER_03]: During a real, real like dry period in my career.

[00:13:09] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[00:13:09] [SPEAKER_03]: I was trying to get work as a film critic writing for websites.

[00:13:12] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh really?

[00:13:13] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, and so I got like a connection and I got into a

[00:13:16] [SPEAKER_03]: screening of Darling Companion that was my first assignment

[00:13:18] [SPEAKER_03]: was to write a review of Darling Companion

[00:13:20] [SPEAKER_03]: and I couldn't do it.

[00:13:21] [SPEAKER_03]: Who is it for?

[00:13:22] [SPEAKER_03]: Some website.

[00:13:24] [SPEAKER_03]: Okay.

[00:13:24] [SPEAKER_03]: That I couldn't even tell you the name of.

[00:13:26] [SPEAKER_03]: I remember going to check in at the screening

[00:13:27] [SPEAKER_03]: and I couldn't remember the name of the people

[00:13:29] [SPEAKER_03]: who had hired me to do it.

[00:13:30] [SPEAKER_03]: Wow.

[00:13:30] [SPEAKER_03]: And I just never sent in my review.

[00:13:32] [SPEAKER_03]: And that was that.

[00:13:33] [SPEAKER_03]: Because I was like, all I wanted to do is just write

[00:13:35] [SPEAKER_03]: for seven pages how much I hate this movie.

[00:13:38] [SPEAKER_03]: But not in a constructive way.

[00:13:40] [SPEAKER_03]: The internet.

[00:13:40] [SPEAKER_03]: I realized well and then I got into this whole thing

[00:13:42] [SPEAKER_03]: of like I know how hard it is to make a movie.

[00:13:44] [SPEAKER_02]: Isn't it a little worrying that Lawrence Kasdan's last three

[00:13:49] [SPEAKER_02]: screenwriting credits are Dreamcatcher,

[00:13:51] [SPEAKER_02]: Darling Companion and Star Wars the Force Awakens?

[00:13:54] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:13:55] [SPEAKER_03]: Or are we gonna be okay?

[00:13:56] [SPEAKER_03]: I think we're gonna be okay.

[00:13:57] [SPEAKER_03]: Okay.

[00:13:57] [SPEAKER_03]: But let's talk about the movie at hand.

[00:13:58] [SPEAKER_03]: George Lucas steps back.

[00:13:59] [SPEAKER_03]: The empire strikes back.

[00:14:01] [SPEAKER_03]: George Lucas is looking at the larger picture.

[00:14:04] [SPEAKER_03]: Nice work, David.

[00:14:06] [SPEAKER_03]: George Lucas.

[00:14:06] [SPEAKER_00]: Really good job.

[00:14:07] [SPEAKER_03]: Really good job.

[00:14:08] [SPEAKER_03]: We're all so proud of you.

[00:14:09] [SPEAKER_03]: George Lucas steps back, sort of functions as a showrunner.

[00:14:11] [SPEAKER_03]: He goes here's where I want the story to go.

[00:14:13] [SPEAKER_03]: I think he's plotting multiple movies at once.

[00:14:15] [SPEAKER_03]: He starts going okay we're gonna do these movies

[00:14:16] [SPEAKER_03]: then we're gonna go back and do episode one, two and three

[00:14:19] [SPEAKER_03]: so that everyone can wait and not watch these movies

[00:14:22] [SPEAKER_03]: until one, two and three come out

[00:14:23] [SPEAKER_03]: and then watch these movies.

[00:14:25] [SPEAKER_03]: Of course an order that makes a ton of sense

[00:14:27] [SPEAKER_03]: and then all the merchandising.

[00:14:28] [SPEAKER_03]: So I think he has a heavy hand over this.

[00:14:30] [SPEAKER_03]: I think he's on set all the time.

[00:14:31] [SPEAKER_03]: But much like in TV, you hire director actually do the directing on the day.

[00:14:36] [SPEAKER_03]: You hire a writer to execute the story that you have broken.

[00:14:39] [SPEAKER_03]: And God these two people like fill in a lot of George's weak spots.

[00:14:44] [SPEAKER_03]: Might be the best directed film of the series so far.

[00:14:48] [SPEAKER_02]: It might be.

[00:14:49] [SPEAKER_03]: Do we want to, should we save this for the end of episode

[00:14:51] [SPEAKER_03]: or should we get this out right now?

[00:14:53] [SPEAKER_03]: Do you like this more or less than Anuho?

[00:14:55] [SPEAKER_02]: I like it more.

[00:14:56] [SPEAKER_03]: I like it less.

[00:14:57] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah I like it more.

[00:14:59] [SPEAKER_03]: I think it's great.

[00:14:59] [SPEAKER_03]: There's something about the newness, no pun intended of Anuho

[00:15:04] [SPEAKER_03]: and I like how tight it is, how contained it is.

[00:15:09] [SPEAKER_03]: But it's definitely, this is the most mature Star Wars movie we've seen so far.

[00:15:14] [SPEAKER_03]: Irving Kirscher is much more of an actress director.

[00:15:16] [SPEAKER_03]: This movie is incredible.

[00:15:18] [SPEAKER_03]: It's incredible.

[00:15:18] [SPEAKER_03]: And we're about to get into how incredible it is.

[00:15:20] [SPEAKER_03]: But he gets nuanced performances out

[00:15:22] [SPEAKER_03]: and Lawrence Kasdan is so good at dialogue, you know?

[00:15:25] [SPEAKER_02]: This movie has a lot of humanity too.

[00:15:27] [SPEAKER_02]: There's a lot of humor.

[00:15:29] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:15:29] [SPEAKER_02]: There's a lot of bleak sort of like, you know, reckoning going on

[00:15:35] [SPEAKER_02]: but through humor and through banter and through, it's the best movie.

[00:15:41] [SPEAKER_03]: Less to be said.

[00:15:41] [SPEAKER_03]: A lot of romance too.

[00:15:42] [SPEAKER_03]: Let's get straight into it.

[00:15:44] [SPEAKER_03]: Of course with the opinions of someone who has spoken on Mike

[00:15:47] [SPEAKER_03]: that has not been introduced formally.

[00:15:49] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh my God!

[00:15:50] [SPEAKER_02]: Who's that in the corner?

[00:15:51] [SPEAKER_03]: We were too excited to introduce him.

[00:15:52] [SPEAKER_03]: Peeping away!

[00:15:53] [SPEAKER_03]: Peeping away he's peeping us.

[00:15:55] [SPEAKER_03]: He's raising his eyebrows.

[00:15:55] [SPEAKER_03]: He's raising his eyebrows to say quite quite.

[00:15:57] [SPEAKER_03]: For once, not Scarlet with anger.

[00:16:01] [SPEAKER_00]: Scarlet with joy!

[00:16:02] [SPEAKER_00]: Opposite, yes.

[00:16:03] [SPEAKER_00]: I'm excited.

[00:16:05] [SPEAKER_01]: Producer Ben.

[00:16:06] [SPEAKER_01]: Aka.

[00:16:06] [SPEAKER_01]: Ben Dusser.

[00:16:07] [SPEAKER_01]: Aka.

[00:16:08] [SPEAKER_01]: The Haas.

[00:16:09] [SPEAKER_01]: Aka.

[00:16:10] [SPEAKER_01]: The Poet Laureate.

[00:16:11] [SPEAKER_01]: Aka.

[00:16:12] [SPEAKER_01]: Hello Fennel.

[00:16:13] [SPEAKER_01]: Aka.

[00:16:14] [SPEAKER_01]: The Peeper.

[00:16:15] [SPEAKER_01]: Aka.

[00:16:16] [SPEAKER_01]: Birthday Benny.

[00:16:16] [SPEAKER_01]: Aka.

[00:16:17] [SPEAKER_02]: Old Ben Kenobi, Old Producer Ben Kenobi.

[00:16:20] [SPEAKER_02]: It's Ben Haasley mother fuckers.

[00:16:21] [SPEAKER_02]: There he is.

[00:16:22] [SPEAKER_02]: Hey guys.

[00:16:23] [SPEAKER_02]: The producer of this podcast.

[00:16:25] [SPEAKER_00]: That's right.

[00:16:25] [SPEAKER_02]: Guys, we're back.

[00:16:26] [SPEAKER_03]: The spoken fan of Empire Strikes Back.

[00:16:28] [SPEAKER_00]: I'm going to read you.

[00:16:29] [SPEAKER_00]: It's the bet.

[00:16:30] [SPEAKER_00]: It's my favorite actually.

[00:16:31] [SPEAKER_00]: Really?

[00:16:32] [SPEAKER_02]: I think it might be my favorite.

[00:16:34] [SPEAKER_02]: I believe it.

[00:16:34] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm going to read you the opening crawl to Empire Strikes Back.

[00:16:37] [SPEAKER_02]: It is a dark time for the rebellion.

[00:16:40] [SPEAKER_02]: Although the Death Star has been destroyed previously on,

[00:16:44] [SPEAKER_02]: Imperial troops have driven the rebel forces from their hidden base and pursued them

[00:16:48] [SPEAKER_02]: across the galaxy.

[00:16:49] [SPEAKER_02]: Ooh that's scary.

[00:16:51] [SPEAKER_02]: So a little bit of time has passed.

[00:16:52] [SPEAKER_02]: They've been rooted out of that moon base I guess on the Yavin.

[00:16:55] [SPEAKER_02]: They're on the run.

[00:16:56] [SPEAKER_02]: Evading the dreaded Imperial Starfleet, a group of freedom fighters led by Luke Skywalker.

[00:17:01] [SPEAKER_02]: That's my boy.

[00:17:02] [SPEAKER_02]: Has established a new secret base on the remote ice world of Hoth.

[00:17:07] [SPEAKER_00]: Oh man.

[00:17:09] [SPEAKER_00]: Love this world.

[00:17:10] [SPEAKER_02]: That's cool.

[00:17:10] [SPEAKER_02]: Love this world.

[00:17:11] [SPEAKER_02]: The evil Lord Darth Vader obsessed with finding young Skywalker has dispatched thousands of

[00:17:17] [SPEAKER_02]: remote probes into the far reaches of space.

[00:17:20] [SPEAKER_02]: A little bit of a soft ending to that one there.

[00:17:23] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh no probes.

[00:17:26] [SPEAKER_03]: Anyway, this takes place three years after Star Wars.

[00:17:30] [SPEAKER_03]: I don't know if you've been reading Marvel comics.

[00:17:34] [SPEAKER_02]: The Star Wars stuff?

[00:17:35] [SPEAKER_03]: I actually haven't.

[00:17:36] [SPEAKER_03]: I've been getting into it right now.

[00:17:37] [SPEAKER_03]: I hear they're good.

[00:17:38] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, because now they're all under the Disney family and they've been doing new

[00:17:42] [SPEAKER_03]: comics that are officially considered part of canon.

[00:17:45] [SPEAKER_01]: Yes.

[00:17:46] [SPEAKER_03]: And so a lot of miniseries but the main series which is just called Star Wars

[00:17:49] [SPEAKER_03]: and is an ongoing comic series.

[00:17:51] [SPEAKER_03]: Yes.

[00:17:52] [SPEAKER_03]: Is takes place in between a new hope and Empire Strikes Back.

[00:17:56] [SPEAKER_03]: I had no idea.

[00:17:57] [SPEAKER_03]: Crazy.

[00:17:57] [SPEAKER_03]: That's what the main series is filling in that time.

[00:18:00] [SPEAKER_03]: There was a Princess Leia miniseries.

[00:18:02] [SPEAKER_03]: There's a Darth Vader that's ongoing.

[00:18:04] [SPEAKER_03]: It was a trade paperback called Shattered Empire that takes place after in

[00:18:09] [SPEAKER_03]: between episode six and seven.

[00:18:11] [SPEAKER_03]: Okay, I was wondering if there was any of that stuff.

[00:18:13] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, there's one but the main ongoing story, the one main titular Star Wars

[00:18:18] [SPEAKER_03]: series.

[00:18:18] [SPEAKER_03]: Yes.

[00:18:20] [SPEAKER_03]: They got a Chewbacca series, I think it just started a Lando series.

[00:18:23] [SPEAKER_03]: I haven't caught up with those yet.

[00:18:24] [SPEAKER_03]: Lando.

[00:18:25] [SPEAKER_03]: We're going to talk about it.

[00:18:25] [SPEAKER_03]: We're going to talk about that.

[00:18:26] [SPEAKER_02]: Willie D. Billiam.

[00:18:28] [SPEAKER_03]: I told you that.

[00:18:29] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, you told me that.

[00:18:29] [SPEAKER_03]: Who is that?

[00:18:30] [SPEAKER_03]: That's John Bander who's a great comedian actor.

[00:18:35] [SPEAKER_03]: You can see him at the UCB Theater on the Characters Welcome

[00:18:38] [SPEAKER_03]: team I think once a month on Mondays.

[00:18:41] [SPEAKER_03]: He does a sketch.

[00:18:42] [SPEAKER_03]: I don't know if he still does it but he does a sketch.

[00:18:44] [SPEAKER_03]: I just got Gimprobs here.

[00:18:45] [SPEAKER_03]: No, it's so good.

[00:18:46] [SPEAKER_03]: He's a guy.

[00:18:48] [SPEAKER_03]: A Hollywood Schmoozer dropping names and the bit is that he flips the name.

[00:18:52] [SPEAKER_03]: He calls Will Smith, Bill Smith and he calls.

[00:18:58] [SPEAKER_02]: Bill Cosby, Will Cosby.

[00:18:59] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:19:00] [SPEAKER_03]: He just flips that to make it always sound like he's closer with them and the thing

[00:19:03] [SPEAKER_03]: just keeps on building and building.

[00:19:05] [SPEAKER_03]: It's the same joke that he just keeps on doing it.

[00:19:06] [SPEAKER_03]: Every time he says a name, they project the face of the person and it builds

[00:19:10] [SPEAKER_03]: up to him going and who walked in, would he believe it?

[00:19:13] [SPEAKER_03]: None other than Willie D. Billiams.

[00:19:15] [SPEAKER_03]: Really good.

[00:19:16] [SPEAKER_03]: The bit is just so he can get to that joke and it's so worth it.

[00:19:19] [SPEAKER_03]: It's a great, great thing.

[00:19:21] [SPEAKER_03]: John Bander is great.

[00:19:22] [SPEAKER_03]: Look at John Bander.

[00:19:23] [SPEAKER_03]: There's no way he listens to this podcast and now we've just spent two minutes

[00:19:25] [SPEAKER_03]: talking about how great he is.

[00:19:27] [SPEAKER_03]: This movie begins on the Ice Planet of Hoth.

[00:19:33] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh, there was something important I wanted to say about the comic books.

[00:19:35] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh, fine.

[00:19:36] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, go ahead.

[00:19:36] [SPEAKER_03]: Because this is now considered part of canon.

[00:19:38] [SPEAKER_03]: A lot of the expanded universe was wiped out when Disney bought the comic.

[00:19:41] [SPEAKER_02]: So what is what happens in the comic?

[00:19:43] [SPEAKER_03]: Because it takes place in the main stretch here.

[00:19:45] [SPEAKER_03]: I know this is implied, but the comic books are really fleshing this out.

[00:19:50] [SPEAKER_03]: Darth Vader has no idea who blew up the Death Star.

[00:19:53] [SPEAKER_03]: Interesting.

[00:19:54] [SPEAKER_03]: So it's not even that he's now seen...

[00:19:56] [SPEAKER_03]: Right, because why would they?

[00:19:57] [SPEAKER_03]: They just know some rebels to him, right?

[00:19:59] [SPEAKER_03]: So he's seen Luke Skywalker but doesn't know that's his son.

[00:20:03] [SPEAKER_02]: And he chased down Luke in the ship and said the force is strong

[00:20:07] [SPEAKER_02]: with this home, but he didn't know who it was.

[00:20:09] [SPEAKER_03]: He doesn't know that that's the guy, the pilot who actually blew up the Death Star.

[00:20:13] [SPEAKER_03]: So I think that's big.

[00:20:14] [SPEAKER_03]: The comic books have like...

[00:20:15] [SPEAKER_03]: That was always sort of implied, but the comic books have really highlighted that

[00:20:18] [SPEAKER_03]: in a way that I think is interesting.

[00:20:19] [SPEAKER_03]: And watching this movie through that prism as the point here, he's searching.

[00:20:23] [SPEAKER_03]: Like he doesn't know who the fuck blew this up,

[00:20:25] [SPEAKER_03]: but he wants to find that asshole and take him down.

[00:20:28] [SPEAKER_03]: And Luke Skywalker is now in deep with the Rebel Alliance.

[00:20:31] [SPEAKER_03]: He's not just some kid weekend warrior, let me fly a ship.

[00:20:34] [SPEAKER_03]: Even blow up the Death Star!

[00:20:35] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, and he's like, you know, not just going like,

[00:20:37] [SPEAKER_03]: okay, let me rest on my laurels, let me get a corner office.

[00:20:40] [SPEAKER_03]: He's out there in the front lines doing it.

[00:20:42] [SPEAKER_03]: So this movie starts Ice Planet, Hoth.

[00:20:45] [SPEAKER_03]: We see a main ship...

[00:20:46] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh, it's a classic opening Star Wars show.

[00:20:47] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, we see the Star Destroyer.

[00:20:49] [SPEAKER_03]: From underneath the Star Destroyer comes out, it shoots out a thing.

[00:20:51] [SPEAKER_03]: It shoots a probe droid and it lands on Hoth.

[00:20:53] [SPEAKER_03]: Probe droid goes, flies around.

[00:20:53] [SPEAKER_02]: This thing is so cool.

[00:20:54] [SPEAKER_02]: It looks like a jellyfish.

[00:20:55] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, it's like a metal squid.

[00:20:57] [SPEAKER_02]: It's like...

[00:20:57] [SPEAKER_02]: It has a weird noise where it's like...

[00:21:00] [SPEAKER_03]: And it's like looking and then we see the snow, it's all white.

[00:21:02] [SPEAKER_03]: And then we see like...

[00:21:04] [SPEAKER_03]: How do you even describe this animal?

[00:21:06] [SPEAKER_03]: It's called a tauntaun.

[00:21:07] [SPEAKER_02]: It's kind of like a ram.

[00:21:09] [SPEAKER_02]: It has like weird ram horns.

[00:21:11] [SPEAKER_02]: But then it's built a little like a kangaroo.

[00:21:13] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, it looks like a kangaroo body.

[00:21:15] [SPEAKER_02]: Right.

[00:21:15] [SPEAKER_02]: It runs in this kind of herky-jerky motion because it's sort of a stop-motion creation.

[00:21:19] [SPEAKER_02]: Curly gray fur.

[00:21:21] [SPEAKER_02]: And it's like...

[00:21:22] [SPEAKER_02]: I don't know, I can't do it.

[00:21:24] [SPEAKER_03]: He's like the new booga.

[00:21:26] [SPEAKER_02]: No, he's better than Boog.

[00:21:27] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, that's what I'm saying.

[00:21:28] [SPEAKER_02]: He's not some bullshit.

[00:21:29] [SPEAKER_03]: I don't say that.

[00:21:31] [SPEAKER_03]: I will concede that I like this tauntaun better than Boog.

[00:21:34] [SPEAKER_03]: David, don't say that.

[00:21:36] [SPEAKER_03]: This is a positive podcast.

[00:21:37] [SPEAKER_03]: We finally found a movie we liked.

[00:21:39] [SPEAKER_03]: We're in two movies in a row that we like.

[00:21:40] [SPEAKER_02]: Is Han Solo with Luke the whole time?

[00:21:43] [SPEAKER_02]: No.

[00:21:43] [SPEAKER_02]: No?

[00:21:43] [SPEAKER_02]: So he goes off and does stuff?

[00:21:45] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh, in the comics you say?

[00:21:46] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, in the comics.

[00:21:47] [SPEAKER_03]: They splinter off.

[00:21:49] [SPEAKER_02]: Because now Luke and Han, they're on their tauntauns.

[00:21:52] [SPEAKER_03]: They're a lot of side missions.

[00:21:53] [SPEAKER_03]: The comics it's like the continuing ventures of the Rebel Alliance trying to...

[00:21:56] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, sure.

[00:21:57] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, yeah.

[00:21:57] [SPEAKER_02]: But here we are on Hoth, which is an ice planet.

[00:22:01] [SPEAKER_02]: Yes.

[00:22:01] [SPEAKER_02]: It is snow.

[00:22:02] [SPEAKER_02]: And Luke's like looking around.

[00:22:04] [SPEAKER_02]: Now and I've complained in the past and it's true of these movies too.

[00:22:06] [SPEAKER_02]: Every planet is one thing.

[00:22:08] [SPEAKER_02]: It's like Hoth is an ice planet.

[00:22:09] [SPEAKER_02]: One weather condition.

[00:22:10] [SPEAKER_02]: And it's snow and they're going home.

[00:22:14] [SPEAKER_02]: Han goes off to inspect the probe droid.

[00:22:16] [SPEAKER_02]: Or no.

[00:22:17] [SPEAKER_02]: No, Han just goes home and Luke goes off to inspect some readings.

[00:22:22] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:22:22] [SPEAKER_02]: And he gets captured by a Wampa.

[00:22:27] [SPEAKER_03]: Wampa, motherfucker.

[00:22:28] [SPEAKER_03]: I was looking for my phone charger or my backpack.

[00:22:30] [SPEAKER_02]: He gets captured by a Wampa which is like an abominable snowman with claws who strings him up.

[00:22:37] [SPEAKER_02]: I just want to quickly get through this because it's nice clean storytelling again.

[00:22:42] [SPEAKER_02]: The Wampa kind of traps Luke in his ice cave and Luke is separated from his lightsaber.

[00:22:48] [SPEAKER_02]: And what does he do to get it back?

[00:22:50] [SPEAKER_02]: He uses the force.

[00:22:51] [SPEAKER_02]: But it's hard.

[00:22:52] [SPEAKER_02]: It's hard.

[00:22:53] [SPEAKER_03]: He's like...

[00:22:53] [SPEAKER_02]: He's still learning.

[00:22:54] [SPEAKER_02]: And he finally gets the lightsaber in his hand and the last minute chops that Wampa's arms off.

[00:22:58] [SPEAKER_03]: This is an exciting sequence.

[00:23:00] [SPEAKER_03]: We're essentially in meteorite rise.

[00:23:01] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, a little bit.

[00:23:01] [SPEAKER_03]: Run into the adventure.

[00:23:03] [SPEAKER_03]: But I just think for larger context it's important to note one of the reasons this sequence

[00:23:09] [SPEAKER_03]: happened this early was constructed the way it was in between the release of...

[00:23:16] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh, Luke.

[00:23:16] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, Mark Hamill got in like a car accident.

[00:23:17] [SPEAKER_02]: Mark Hamill got in really bad car accident.

[00:23:19] [SPEAKER_02]: Motorcycle accident, I think.

[00:23:20] [SPEAKER_02]: But this has been much disputed over the years because I feel like there's these

[00:23:24] [SPEAKER_02]: rumors like his face got ripped off.

[00:23:26] [SPEAKER_02]: It was like majorly reconstructed.

[00:23:28] [SPEAKER_02]: Mark Hamill's always been like, no, it wasn't that bad.

[00:23:30] [SPEAKER_02]: It wasn't that bad but clearly his face looks different.

[00:23:33] [SPEAKER_03]: His face is a little different.

[00:23:33] [SPEAKER_03]: His nose and especially his upper lip looks like it has been reconstructed.

[00:23:38] [SPEAKER_03]: He's got a bit of a fuller face.

[00:23:41] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, and I think this movie was made right after...

[00:23:44] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[00:23:44] [SPEAKER_03]: So the surgery was still sort of like, if not healing like settling.

[00:23:47] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:23:48] [SPEAKER_02]: Can I say something about Harrison Ford in this movie?

[00:23:50] [SPEAKER_02]: There's even more hands on it.

[00:23:51] [SPEAKER_02]: He's just more hands.

[00:23:52] [SPEAKER_02]: He's such a handsome guy.

[00:23:53] [SPEAKER_02]: He's liquid sex.

[00:23:54] [SPEAKER_02]: This is a year before Raiders, maybe two years before?

[00:23:58] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, Raiders is 82, 81.

[00:24:01] [SPEAKER_03]: I think Raiders is 81.

[00:24:03] [SPEAKER_03]: 81.

[00:24:03] [SPEAKER_03]: I think this was the year before.

[00:24:03] [SPEAKER_03]: 81.

[00:24:04] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, so he's just a fucking god.

[00:24:07] [SPEAKER_03]: This guy's great.

[00:24:09] [SPEAKER_03]: This is...

[00:24:11] [SPEAKER_03]: I mean, maybe my favorite movie character of all time.

[00:24:14] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, he's so cool.

[00:24:16] [SPEAKER_03]: He's the best.

[00:24:16] [SPEAKER_02]: He has so many cool moments early on where he wants to ride out and get Luke,

[00:24:23] [SPEAKER_02]: and it's dark and everyone at the rebel base is like, it's dark.

[00:24:26] [SPEAKER_02]: You can't go out there.

[00:24:27] [SPEAKER_02]: More like Dark Vader, you know?

[00:24:28] [SPEAKER_02]: No, thank you.

[00:24:29] [SPEAKER_02]: It's dark.

[00:24:29] [SPEAKER_02]: And he's like, I'll see you in hell.

[00:24:32] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:24:32] [SPEAKER_02]: He's like, if you go out there, you'll die.

[00:24:34] [SPEAKER_02]: And he's like, well, I'll see you in hell.

[00:24:35] [SPEAKER_02]: And he goes and he gets Luke and he rescues him and he shoves him inside of a taunta.

[00:24:40] [SPEAKER_03]: Well, I just want to put it out.

[00:24:41] [SPEAKER_03]: So the wampa...

[00:24:42] [SPEAKER_03]: That's what he does.

[00:24:43] [SPEAKER_03]: Yes, that's what he does.

[00:24:43] [SPEAKER_03]: And he's great at it.

[00:24:44] [SPEAKER_03]: He's so good at it.

[00:24:45] [SPEAKER_03]: And they steal that move in the Revenant, by the way.

[00:24:49] [SPEAKER_03]: It's like a horse, right?

[00:24:50] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, except it's doodoo and it's got no Han Solo in it.

[00:24:53] [SPEAKER_03]: Wampa strikes Luke's face in a way that like...

[00:24:57] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh yeah.

[00:24:58] [SPEAKER_03]: Really affects the areas of the...

[00:24:58] [SPEAKER_03]: Who cares?

[00:24:59] [SPEAKER_03]: No, but no, because I like that they incorporated it into the story.

[00:25:03] [SPEAKER_02]: Okay.

[00:25:03] [SPEAKER_02]: I do, okay?

[00:25:04] [SPEAKER_02]: You know what he would have done in the original Phantom Menace movies?

[00:25:07] [SPEAKER_02]: He would have like just CGI'd the whole face onto his face.

[00:25:10] [SPEAKER_02]: Exactly.

[00:25:11] [SPEAKER_02]: Instead.

[00:25:11] [SPEAKER_03]: But Luke, the Luke we met in the Last Star Wars movie.

[00:25:15] [SPEAKER_02]: He was a baby.

[00:25:15] [SPEAKER_02]: He was a baby.

[00:25:16] [SPEAKER_02]: And now he's a man.

[00:25:18] [SPEAKER_03]: Right, and they could just pretend, oh this is the same face this guy had.

[00:25:21] [SPEAKER_03]: It's only like 10% different.

[00:25:22] [SPEAKER_03]: But instead they made it a damage that he incurs in the line of battle.

[00:25:27] [SPEAKER_03]: They show us that.

[00:25:28] [SPEAKER_03]: So the rest of the movie we see a face that's like...

[00:25:30] [SPEAKER_03]: This guy's seen shit.

[00:25:31] [SPEAKER_03]: Like he's scarred down, you know?

[00:25:32] [SPEAKER_02]: Also he gets shoved inside of a taunta.

[00:25:34] [SPEAKER_02]: Yes.

[00:25:35] [SPEAKER_02]: It's pretty weird.

[00:25:36] [SPEAKER_02]: And also he has a vision, like a death vision of Obi-Wan saying,

[00:25:40] [SPEAKER_02]: You need to go to the Dagobah system and train with Yoda.

[00:25:43] [SPEAKER_02]: Right.

[00:25:43] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh yeah.

[00:25:44] [SPEAKER_02]: And we're like, oh Yoda!

[00:25:46] [SPEAKER_02]: I don't know if I want to see Yoda.

[00:25:48] [SPEAKER_03]: Because he's heard the voice before but now he's seeing it.

[00:25:50] [SPEAKER_03]: It almost looks like a little hologram.

[00:25:51] [SPEAKER_03]: Right, it's like a ghost.

[00:25:52] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, it's like a little ghost and he's like, Yoda,

[00:25:54] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm telling you this is the guy, go meet up with him.

[00:25:56] [SPEAKER_03]: And if I know you, and I know you Ben,

[00:26:01] [SPEAKER_03]: I feel like at that moment you hear that and you go, oh fuck.

[00:26:03] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, you're not excited to see Yoda.

[00:26:05] [SPEAKER_03]: Yoda's such a bummer.

[00:26:06] [SPEAKER_02]: But you've been kind of waiting on it because he didn't die.

[00:26:09] [SPEAKER_02]: You knew he was going to come back at some point.

[00:26:11] [SPEAKER_02]: He went off, you know.

[00:26:11] [SPEAKER_03]: And I thought maybe he was a bad guy, what is,

[00:26:13] [SPEAKER_03]: we're getting ahead of ourselves a little bit.

[00:26:15] [SPEAKER_03]: But at that moment when they say his name I go,

[00:26:17] [SPEAKER_04]: Uh, Kirsch?

[00:26:19] [SPEAKER_02]: Where you going with this?

[00:26:19] [SPEAKER_02]: And it's a little cute like how Obi-Wan is like,

[00:26:22] [SPEAKER_02]: shows up and he's like,

[00:26:24] [SPEAKER_02]: You're gonna go to Dagobah, you take a left out of here.

[00:26:27] [SPEAKER_02]: You know, it's like a little too specific.

[00:26:28] [SPEAKER_02]: Very specific.

[00:26:30] [SPEAKER_02]: There you will go,

[00:26:31] [SPEAKER_02]: and Luke's like, excuse me,

[00:26:32] [SPEAKER_02]: I am face down in the snow.

[00:26:35] [SPEAKER_02]: Like I can't take this down right now, Obi-Wan.

[00:26:38] [SPEAKER_03]: Now, back on the base,

[00:26:41] [SPEAKER_03]: the Hoth base that the rebels have,

[00:26:44] [SPEAKER_03]: the fireworks are flying between Leia and Han.

[00:26:46] [SPEAKER_02]: Now here's my question,

[00:26:47] [SPEAKER_02]: and this was posed on Twitter recently.

[00:26:49] [SPEAKER_02]: Someone posed this question on Twitter,

[00:26:51] [SPEAKER_02]: which is when do Han and Leia

[00:26:52] [SPEAKER_02]: start having sex with each other in this series?

[00:26:57] [SPEAKER_02]: And someone threw out a theory

[00:26:59] [SPEAKER_02]: that I thought was very interesting,

[00:27:00] [SPEAKER_02]: which is it's already happening.

[00:27:03] [SPEAKER_02]: But they're not ready to acknowledge it yet,

[00:27:05] [SPEAKER_02]: as something that matters, if that makes sense.

[00:27:07] [SPEAKER_03]: I hope that's covered in the comic books.

[00:27:09] [SPEAKER_03]: I hope they do one, a mini series.

[00:27:11] [SPEAKER_03]: That's all the dirty fucking Star Wars fuck stories that I want.

[00:27:15] [SPEAKER_03]: These guys are at each other's throats,

[00:27:16] [SPEAKER_02]: and it is hot as shit.

[00:27:18] [SPEAKER_02]: It's so hot.

[00:27:18] [SPEAKER_02]: It's interesting because Leia does, as you say,

[00:27:21] [SPEAKER_02]: banter with Han in the first movie,

[00:27:23] [SPEAKER_02]: in The New Hope.

[00:27:25] [SPEAKER_02]: Right.

[00:27:25] [SPEAKER_02]: They're bantering.

[00:27:26] [SPEAKER_02]: She's really, she's, you know, busting his balls.

[00:27:29] [SPEAKER_02]: But, and he, you know, he's like,

[00:27:30] [SPEAKER_02]: hey, Prince, but in this movie,

[00:27:32] [SPEAKER_02]: they're like just like,

[00:27:33] [SPEAKER_02]: eye fucking each other in like,

[00:27:34] [SPEAKER_02]: in each other's face.

[00:27:36] [SPEAKER_02]: Well, and they also have this like,

[00:27:37] [SPEAKER_03]: screwball comedy banter where it's like,

[00:27:39] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, that can be arranged.

[00:27:40] [SPEAKER_03]: I'd rather kiss a wookie.

[00:27:41] [SPEAKER_03]: When they don't know before Han rescues Luke,

[00:27:43] [SPEAKER_03]: when they don't know where Luke is.

[00:27:44] [SPEAKER_02]: She's really worried.

[00:27:45] [SPEAKER_03]: She's really worried,

[00:27:46] [SPEAKER_03]: but he doesn't realize there's like a red flag yet.

[00:27:49] [SPEAKER_03]: And he just comes back to the base and he's like,

[00:27:50] [SPEAKER_03]: hey, I'm heading out.

[00:27:51] [SPEAKER_03]: You know, Rebel Life isn't for me.

[00:27:53] [SPEAKER_03]: This isn't what I'm about.

[00:27:54] [SPEAKER_03]: Plus Jabba the Hutt still got like a bounty on my head.

[00:27:56] [SPEAKER_03]: I gotta go away from this.

[00:27:57] [SPEAKER_02]: What?

[00:27:58] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, well, he says that and she's like,

[00:27:59] [SPEAKER_02]: okay, goodbye Captain Solo.

[00:28:01] [SPEAKER_02]: Right.

[00:28:01] [SPEAKER_02]: And he's like, what?

[00:28:03] [SPEAKER_02]: That's my point.

[00:28:03] [SPEAKER_02]: Why aren't you throwing yourself at my feet?

[00:28:05] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, because that's all you're gonna say.

[00:28:07] [SPEAKER_03]: Well, why don't you beg me to sit?

[00:28:09] [SPEAKER_03]: You know?

[00:28:09] [SPEAKER_03]: So he wants to leave but then they see

[00:28:12] [SPEAKER_03]: that there is an Imperial attack going on.

[00:28:14] [SPEAKER_03]: And so General Reakin goes like,

[00:28:17] [SPEAKER_03]: no, we're not letting any ships fly out.

[00:28:18] [SPEAKER_03]: You gotta stay here.

[00:28:19] [SPEAKER_02]: So we've got this.

[00:28:20] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, it's like, there's this little like detour with Luke.

[00:28:24] [SPEAKER_02]: He gets brought back and then the probe droid,

[00:28:29] [SPEAKER_02]: Jellyfish droid finds the base.

[00:28:30] [SPEAKER_02]: I love this.

[00:28:32] [SPEAKER_02]: We cut up to the Star Destroyer.

[00:28:33] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh right, that's when, I'm sorry.

[00:28:34] [SPEAKER_02]: Yes, I got it out of order.

[00:28:36] [SPEAKER_02]: He's hysterically funny.

[00:28:37] [SPEAKER_02]: We should talk about it.

[00:28:38] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:28:38] [SPEAKER_02]: There's this whole subplot in this movie

[00:28:40] [SPEAKER_02]: about Vader as like the world's worst boss

[00:28:43] [SPEAKER_02]: and these like poor like functionaries on the Star Destroyer.

[00:28:48] [SPEAKER_02]: Like Ozil.

[00:28:48] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, who have to deal with this homicidal maniac

[00:28:51] [SPEAKER_02]: who they're just like,

[00:28:52] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm sorry we accidentally did this thing

[00:28:55] [SPEAKER_02]: and like the ship's kind of gonna take a little while

[00:28:57] [SPEAKER_02]: and he's like, you're dead.

[00:28:58] [SPEAKER_02]: You're the new Admiral.

[00:28:58] [SPEAKER_02]: We'll not stop force choking people.

[00:29:01] [SPEAKER_02]: And what I love about this scene is Ozil is like,

[00:29:03] [SPEAKER_02]: I think it's Ozil is like getting this read out

[00:29:06] [SPEAKER_02]: of the little, of this sort of generator,

[00:29:08] [SPEAKER_02]: the shield generator.

[00:29:09] [SPEAKER_02]: He's like, it's Hoth, there's nothing there.

[00:29:11] [SPEAKER_02]: And Vader's just like, looks at it for one second

[00:29:12] [SPEAKER_02]: and he's like, that's it, we're going there.

[00:29:16] [SPEAKER_02]: Imagine if this was your boss.

[00:29:17] [SPEAKER_03]: But I mean, think about it though.

[00:29:19] [SPEAKER_03]: Like in a certain way, yes,

[00:29:20] [SPEAKER_03]: it's like a hostile work environment, right?

[00:29:22] [SPEAKER_03]: Okay, but in another way,

[00:29:25] [SPEAKER_03]: it's kind of exciting because like a lot of upward mobility.

[00:29:28] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh, it's constant turnover.

[00:29:30] [SPEAKER_03]: Your superior's gonna be killed at any moment.

[00:29:32] [SPEAKER_03]: You could get promoted like 17 steps up the ladder.

[00:29:34] [SPEAKER_02]: There's a weird story with this guy,

[00:29:36] [SPEAKER_02]: Captain Piat or whatever,

[00:29:37] [SPEAKER_02]: who is the one who discovers Hoth,

[00:29:40] [SPEAKER_02]: sort of inadvertently.

[00:29:41] [SPEAKER_02]: And we watch in this movie him rise through the ranks.

[00:29:44] [SPEAKER_02]: He doesn't die.

[00:29:46] [SPEAKER_02]: He's like, and it is this weird little tale

[00:29:48] [SPEAKER_02]: of life in the empire.

[00:29:50] [SPEAKER_02]: Like, yeah, you kind of got to just make sure

[00:29:52] [SPEAKER_02]: you don't die and maybe you're gonna be

[00:29:54] [SPEAKER_02]: in charge of a Star Destroyer.

[00:29:56] [SPEAKER_02]: What are you getting there?

[00:29:58] [SPEAKER_03]: Sorry, my phone's an airplane monster.

[00:30:00] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm gonna say battery.

[00:30:01] [SPEAKER_03]: It's really exciting.

[00:30:02] [SPEAKER_03]: So anyway, there's like Luke recovers quickly

[00:30:07] [SPEAKER_03]: due to awesome robots.

[00:30:09] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, and he's in like a space bath.

[00:30:11] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[00:30:12] [SPEAKER_03]: I mean, well, like who's here on the base?

[00:30:14] [SPEAKER_03]: We still got R2.

[00:30:15] [SPEAKER_03]: We still got Chewbacca.

[00:30:16] [SPEAKER_03]: Chewbacca, we got C3PO.

[00:30:18] [SPEAKER_02]: You got someone to say?

[00:30:20] [SPEAKER_02]: Well, no, I mean...

[00:30:21] [SPEAKER_02]: There's Wedge, although we don't see him,

[00:30:23] [SPEAKER_02]: but he's in this like,

[00:30:24] [SPEAKER_02]: they have these like snow speederships.

[00:30:26] [SPEAKER_00]: I really am just excited about this fight sequence.

[00:30:29] [SPEAKER_00]: Oh, it's so cool.

[00:30:30] [SPEAKER_00]: I think this is maybe the best fight sequence.

[00:30:34] [SPEAKER_03]: I'd agree.

[00:30:34] [SPEAKER_03]: And this is like the first 40 minutes of the movie or something?

[00:30:37] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's real cool.

[00:30:38] [SPEAKER_03]: It's so great to start there.

[00:30:40] [SPEAKER_00]: He started with a big action.

[00:30:42] [SPEAKER_02]: He's doubling that can happen off screen

[00:30:44] [SPEAKER_02]: and you're like, oh, remember that war?

[00:30:45] [SPEAKER_02]: New hope opens with like a little skirmish, you know.

[00:30:48] [SPEAKER_02]: But how...

[00:30:48] [SPEAKER_02]: Between Smithship and this one.

[00:30:50] [SPEAKER_02]: Are the stakes.

[00:30:51] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh man.

[00:30:51] [SPEAKER_03]: The stakes are...

[00:30:52] [SPEAKER_03]: It's a seed.

[00:30:53] [SPEAKER_03]: This is your secret base.

[00:30:54] [SPEAKER_03]: They're coming, they're invading.

[00:30:55] [SPEAKER_03]: You have to protect yourself.

[00:30:56] [SPEAKER_03]: No, you got to go.

[00:30:57] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[00:30:58] [SPEAKER_03]: And so, God, the vehicles they have...

[00:31:00] [SPEAKER_03]: They have these walkers.

[00:31:02] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, they look so cool.

[00:31:03] [SPEAKER_03]: They look like puppy dogs, like giant robot puppy dogs.

[00:31:05] [SPEAKER_03]: They're like four-legged.

[00:31:07] [SPEAKER_02]: Do you remember how in like Attack of the Clones,

[00:31:09] [SPEAKER_02]: every ship is like shooting 14 missiles every second

[00:31:12] [SPEAKER_02]: and looks so stupid?

[00:31:14] [SPEAKER_02]: Too much noise.

[00:31:14] [SPEAKER_02]: You don't know what the fuck is going on.

[00:31:16] [SPEAKER_02]: You can't follow.

[00:31:16] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, this, the walker is so cool.

[00:31:19] [SPEAKER_02]: It's just going boom, boom.

[00:31:20] [SPEAKER_02]: So what's the plus of this thing?

[00:31:22] [SPEAKER_02]: It's indestructible practically.

[00:31:24] [SPEAKER_02]: What's the minus?

[00:31:25] [SPEAKER_02]: It's slow.

[00:31:25] [SPEAKER_02]: Really slow.

[00:31:26] [SPEAKER_02]: And there you have your stakes.

[00:31:28] [SPEAKER_02]: It's going to take them a little while.

[00:31:29] [SPEAKER_02]: They're bearing down on you,

[00:31:30] [SPEAKER_02]: but you can maybe evacuate it.

[00:31:31] [SPEAKER_03]: It's day versus life.

[00:31:32] [SPEAKER_02]: So it's so cool.

[00:31:34] [SPEAKER_02]: We see the, you know, these like transports leaving.

[00:31:37] [SPEAKER_02]: It's so...

[00:31:37] [SPEAKER_02]: There's this really cool sequence.

[00:31:39] [SPEAKER_02]: Do you know what I'm talking about?

[00:31:40] [SPEAKER_02]: Which one?

[00:31:40] [SPEAKER_02]: Where the first like transport leaves from Hoth.

[00:31:44] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:31:44] [SPEAKER_02]: And they fire this like sort of cannon

[00:31:46] [SPEAKER_02]: at like the Star Destroyer.

[00:31:47] [SPEAKER_02]: They kind of like disables the Star Destroyer

[00:31:49] [SPEAKER_02]: for a minute.

[00:31:50] [SPEAKER_02]: And you just cut back to the Rebel Base

[00:31:52] [SPEAKER_02]: and you hear over the PA like the first transport is away.

[00:31:55] [SPEAKER_02]: And everyone goes like,

[00:31:56] [SPEAKER_02]: well, you know, everyone like raises their arms.

[00:31:58] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:31:59] [SPEAKER_02]: Just for a second.

[00:32:00] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:32:00] [SPEAKER_02]: Irwin Kirschner is the best director.

[00:32:01] [SPEAKER_02]: The best.

[00:32:02] [SPEAKER_02]: This movie's the greatest movie ever made.

[00:32:03] [SPEAKER_03]: Guys, I saw something else.

[00:32:04] [SPEAKER_03]: This movie is so beautifully shot.

[00:32:07] [SPEAKER_03]: Clear and pretty.

[00:32:08] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh, it's so great.

[00:32:09] [SPEAKER_03]: But even just the colors,

[00:32:10] [SPEAKER_03]: like I love the way the last one looked aesthetically

[00:32:12] [SPEAKER_03]: and I think it was very well shot as well.

[00:32:13] [SPEAKER_03]: This had different DP.

[00:32:14] [SPEAKER_03]: I was looking at both of the DP's on these,

[00:32:16] [SPEAKER_03]: first two movies are really fascinating.

[00:32:18] [SPEAKER_03]: But Peter Sushiski shot this movie.

[00:32:21] [SPEAKER_03]: He's a Kronenberg's main guy.

[00:32:23] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[00:32:23] [SPEAKER_03]: He shot like Dead Ringers and The New Violence.

[00:32:25] [SPEAKER_03]: He shot Maft of the Stars.

[00:32:26] [SPEAKER_03]: He shot Maft of the Stars.

[00:32:27] [SPEAKER_03]: He still shoots his movies.

[00:32:28] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[00:32:29] [SPEAKER_03]: This is like 70 millimeter,

[00:32:33] [SPEAKER_03]: super rich colors, moody.

[00:32:36] [SPEAKER_03]: Is this shot at 70 millimeter?

[00:32:37] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm all but certain.

[00:32:38] [SPEAKER_03]: I'll look it up.

[00:32:38] [SPEAKER_03]: Because especially in the close ups,

[00:32:40] [SPEAKER_03]: you and I, spoiler alert,

[00:32:42] [SPEAKER_03]: saw the Hateful Eight last week.

[00:32:44] [SPEAKER_02]: We did.

[00:32:44] [SPEAKER_02]: We saw it last week.

[00:32:45] [SPEAKER_02]: In 70 millimeter.

[00:32:46] [SPEAKER_02]: How are you feeling about that one?

[00:32:47] [SPEAKER_02]: I still don't know.

[00:32:48] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, because we actually,

[00:32:50] [SPEAKER_02]: I think there's an embargo

[00:32:50] [SPEAKER_02]: so we shouldn't even talk about how we felt about it.

[00:32:53] [SPEAKER_02]: But we saw it in 70 millimeter.

[00:32:54] [SPEAKER_03]: That's why I never filed that review of Darling,

[00:32:56] [SPEAKER_03]: a companion, long time companion.

[00:32:57] [SPEAKER_03]: So I don't have to abide by embargoes.

[00:32:59] [SPEAKER_03]: Well, that's true.

[00:33:00] [SPEAKER_03]: I still won't say what I think though

[00:33:01] [SPEAKER_03]: because I'm still trying to figure it out.

[00:33:03] [SPEAKER_03]: I know.

[00:33:03] [SPEAKER_03]: Which you should not infer to mean positive or negative.

[00:33:06] [SPEAKER_03]: Right.

[00:33:06] [SPEAKER_03]: It's a lot of movie and I probably see it again.

[00:33:08] [SPEAKER_02]: The first wave of release included 126 70 millimeter prints.

[00:33:11] [SPEAKER_02]: Thank you.

[00:33:12] [SPEAKER_02]: But most of the movie was released in if 35 millimeter.

[00:33:14] [SPEAKER_02]: But I believe it was shot in 70 millimeter.

[00:33:16] [SPEAKER_03]: Of course.

[00:33:16] [SPEAKER_03]: There are close ups in the Hateful Eight

[00:33:18] [SPEAKER_03]: where you're like, oh shit.

[00:33:20] [SPEAKER_03]: That's why 70 millimeter rule.

[00:33:21] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh great.

[00:33:22] [SPEAKER_02]: We can have this incredible deep focus shot of two characters

[00:33:25] [SPEAKER_02]: on opposite sides of a fucking room.

[00:33:28] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, but also just those close ups and it's like,

[00:33:30] [SPEAKER_03]: you're getting so much more performance

[00:33:32] [SPEAKER_03]: because you're seeing all the muscles in their face

[00:33:34] [SPEAKER_03]: in such rich detail

[00:33:35] [SPEAKER_03]: and all the wrinkles in their skin and all these things.

[00:33:38] [SPEAKER_03]: And so you can get these like micro expressions.

[00:33:41] [SPEAKER_03]: It really feels like you're picking up

[00:33:42] [SPEAKER_03]: on micro expressions that you can't get

[00:33:43] [SPEAKER_03]: in 35 even.

[00:33:45] [SPEAKER_03]: This movie just looks fucking gorgeous.

[00:33:49] [SPEAKER_03]: I can't get over a couple of shots it is.

[00:33:50] [SPEAKER_03]: I do too.

[00:33:51] [SPEAKER_03]: I watched it this morning.

[00:33:52] [SPEAKER_03]: I want to watch it again right now.

[00:33:55] [SPEAKER_03]: How do they end up taking down these?

[00:33:59] [SPEAKER_03]: Now here's a big question.

[00:34:00] [SPEAKER_03]: Do you think it's an ATAT or an ad ad?

[00:34:03] [SPEAKER_03]: ATAT.

[00:34:04] [SPEAKER_03]: I agree.

[00:34:04] [SPEAKER_03]: Anyone who thinks the opposite is dumb.

[00:34:06] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, no.

[00:34:06] [SPEAKER_03]: It's an ATAT.

[00:34:07] [SPEAKER_03]: It's hyphen.

[00:34:08] [SPEAKER_03]: I mean it's an acronym.

[00:34:09] [SPEAKER_03]: Some people call them ad ads and they're wrong.

[00:34:11] [SPEAKER_03]: No?

[00:34:12] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[00:34:12] [SPEAKER_03]: No thank you.

[00:34:13] [SPEAKER_03]: Because spoiler alert in the next movie

[00:34:15] [SPEAKER_03]: there's a thing called an ATT.

[00:34:18] [SPEAKER_03]: ATST.

[00:34:20] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh right.

[00:34:21] [SPEAKER_02]: But they're in this movie too.

[00:34:22] [SPEAKER_02]: The chicken walkers.

[00:34:24] [SPEAKER_03]: ATTE I think is in Revenge of the Sith maybe.

[00:34:26] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh yeah.

[00:34:26] [SPEAKER_03]: Anyway, the point is if you believe that

[00:34:29] [SPEAKER_03]: this thing is called the ATAT

[00:34:31] [SPEAKER_03]: then you have to also believe that

[00:34:32] [SPEAKER_03]: the other thing is called the ATT

[00:34:34] [SPEAKER_03]: and the ATST.

[00:34:35] [SPEAKER_03]: Right, yes.

[00:34:36] [SPEAKER_03]: That's what I was thinking of.

[00:34:37] [SPEAKER_03]: That's an attack of the clones is the ATT.

[00:34:38] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, one of those stupid chips that sucks.

[00:34:40] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, dumb.

[00:34:41] [SPEAKER_03]: Dumb.

[00:34:42] [SPEAKER_03]: This movie rules.

[00:34:43] [SPEAKER_03]: What the half barrel rule is.

[00:34:45] [SPEAKER_03]: So cool.

[00:34:45] [SPEAKER_03]: Love it.

[00:34:46] [SPEAKER_03]: But you can fucking tie their shoelaces together.

[00:34:48] [SPEAKER_03]: I know.

[00:34:49] [SPEAKER_02]: Now it's a little cute.

[00:34:50] [SPEAKER_02]: It's got cute enough.

[00:34:51] [SPEAKER_02]: It's a little cute because they're in these

[00:34:53] [SPEAKER_02]: snow speeders.

[00:34:54] [SPEAKER_02]: They're called Rogue Squadron.

[00:34:56] [SPEAKER_02]: Now in the original movie if you remember

[00:34:57] [SPEAKER_02]: they're red.

[00:34:58] [SPEAKER_02]: Yes.

[00:34:59] [SPEAKER_02]: You know, red 2, red 4.

[00:35:00] [SPEAKER_02]: You know in the original script they're blue.

[00:35:02] [SPEAKER_02]: Do you know that?

[00:35:03] [SPEAKER_02]: They changed to red for some reason.

[00:35:05] [SPEAKER_00]: Hey could we talk about these wide shots

[00:35:08] [SPEAKER_00]: with the models?

[00:35:09] [SPEAKER_00]: Yes.

[00:35:09] [SPEAKER_00]: Because I feel like this is a good example

[00:35:11] [SPEAKER_00]: of throughout these films where like

[00:35:14] [SPEAKER_00]: fucks CGI.

[00:35:15] [SPEAKER_00]: I love that.

[00:35:16] [SPEAKER_00]: I love those shots.

[00:35:17] [SPEAKER_02]: And they're so effective.

[00:35:18] [SPEAKER_02]: They look great.

[00:35:19] [SPEAKER_02]: This is the 70's.

[00:35:20] [SPEAKER_02]: You're shooting on white, which is really hard

[00:35:24] [SPEAKER_02]: to get to make that look good with models.

[00:35:26] [SPEAKER_02]: Yes, sir.

[00:35:27] [SPEAKER_02]: And you know to remove all the wires and stuff.

[00:35:29] [SPEAKER_03]: And bright light like they're not in shadows.

[00:35:31] [SPEAKER_03]: It's like this is yeah.

[00:35:31] [SPEAKER_03]: Looks fantastic.

[00:35:32] [SPEAKER_02]: The ATT's look so cool.

[00:35:35] [SPEAKER_02]: The speeders are great.

[00:35:36] [SPEAKER_02]: I love the design of them.

[00:35:37] [SPEAKER_02]: They've got those weird kind of exhaust vents

[00:35:39] [SPEAKER_02]: at the back.

[00:35:41] Yeah.

[00:35:42] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:35:43] [SPEAKER_02]: When Luke crashes in his speeder,

[00:35:45] [SPEAKER_02]: he has to push the door open.

[00:35:47] [SPEAKER_02]: Everything's fucking packed up and real.

[00:35:48] [SPEAKER_02]: You feel it.

[00:35:49] [SPEAKER_02]: It's like you gotta get this fucking open.

[00:35:51] [SPEAKER_03]: It's not just the fact that they built a real thing,

[00:35:53] [SPEAKER_03]: but like everything behaves in a way

[00:35:55] [SPEAKER_03]: that is recognizable to how you know things

[00:35:57] [SPEAKER_03]: function in the world.

[00:35:58] [SPEAKER_00]: It makes you excited like as someone

[00:36:01] [SPEAKER_00]: who's enjoying the movie.

[00:36:02] [SPEAKER_00]: It makes you kind of excited because like

[00:36:04] [SPEAKER_00]: anyone can create something on a computer.

[00:36:06] [SPEAKER_00]: There's something about the fact that they built it

[00:36:08] [SPEAKER_00]: that makes it feel more real to me seeing it.

[00:36:10] [SPEAKER_00]: Oh, 100%.

[00:36:11] [SPEAKER_00]: You know what you have to think about?

[00:36:12] [SPEAKER_03]: Like not only did everyone have to build all those things,

[00:36:15] [SPEAKER_03]: but all those things had to be ready on the same day.

[00:36:17] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[00:36:17] [SPEAKER_03]: Like it's the miracle of movie making is like

[00:36:20] [SPEAKER_03]: you had to get all the right actors.

[00:36:22] [SPEAKER_02]: You couldn't just be like,

[00:36:23] [SPEAKER_02]: look there's going to be a bunch of business going on.

[00:36:26] [SPEAKER_02]: We'll figure it out later.

[00:36:28] [SPEAKER_02]: Just wave your hands around.

[00:36:29] [SPEAKER_03]: You guys hold individual casting sessions,

[00:36:31] [SPEAKER_03]: cast all the right actors,

[00:36:33] [SPEAKER_03]: build all these props and sets

[00:36:35] [SPEAKER_03]: and costumes and then rig up the ships

[00:36:37] [SPEAKER_03]: and then everything and then get the lenses right

[00:36:40] [SPEAKER_03]: and then light it properly and then get it perfect

[00:36:43] [SPEAKER_03]: and guess what? It fucking worked.

[00:36:45] [SPEAKER_03]: And you watch it and the whole time

[00:36:47] [SPEAKER_03]: you're coming all over the place because it's beautiful

[00:36:50] [SPEAKER_03]: and it defies logic that they were able to pull it off.

[00:36:53] [SPEAKER_03]: You're soaked.

[00:36:54] [SPEAKER_03]: You're soaked.

[00:36:57] [SPEAKER_03]: Squirting all over the place.

[00:36:59] [SPEAKER_02]: So they destroy the AT-ATs by tying their shoelaces.

[00:37:02] [SPEAKER_02]: They tie their shoelaces together.

[00:37:03] [SPEAKER_02]: And most of them die.

[00:37:05] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:37:06] [SPEAKER_02]: Again.

[00:37:06] [SPEAKER_02]: It's a pretty brutal life being like a fighter pilot.

[00:37:09] [SPEAKER_02]: Luke takes after his dad though.

[00:37:10] [SPEAKER_02]: He's a really good pilot.

[00:37:11] [SPEAKER_02]: He's good and he takes down one of the AT-ATs

[00:37:13] [SPEAKER_02]: all by himself using like a fucking grappling hook

[00:37:16] [SPEAKER_02]: and his lightsaber and a grenade.

[00:37:18] [SPEAKER_02]: It's pretty awesome.

[00:37:19] [SPEAKER_03]: Let's also mention that I think he's a captain.

[00:37:21] [SPEAKER_03]: There's a captain with a big bushy mustache

[00:37:23] [SPEAKER_03]: who gives Luke orders at a weather on the base

[00:37:25] [SPEAKER_03]: and then is, I believe in one of the ships

[00:37:28] [SPEAKER_03]: who was played by John Ratsenberger,

[00:37:29] [SPEAKER_03]: aka Cliff from Cheers.

[00:37:30] [SPEAKER_03]: That's right.

[00:37:31] [SPEAKER_03]: All the Pixar movies.

[00:37:32] [SPEAKER_02]: Let's also point out that Leia is the boss.

[00:37:35] [SPEAKER_02]: She's killing it.

[00:37:37] [SPEAKER_02]: She gives this cool speech where she's surrounded

[00:37:40] [SPEAKER_02]: by fighter pilots and she's just explaining everything.

[00:37:42] [SPEAKER_02]: Carrie Fisher is what, 5'2"?

[00:37:44] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:37:45] [SPEAKER_02]: If even David.

[00:37:46] [SPEAKER_02]: And like 120 pounds at this point.

[00:37:48] [SPEAKER_02]: And is like 22.

[00:37:49] [SPEAKER_02]: And is barking basically at these guys.

[00:37:51] [SPEAKER_02]: Not barking exactly but you know she is on her shit.

[00:37:54] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:37:55] [SPEAKER_02]: She is awesome.

[00:37:56] [SPEAKER_02]: She owns it.

[00:37:57] [SPEAKER_02]: She owns it.

[00:37:57] [SPEAKER_03]: She knows what she's doing.

[00:37:59] [SPEAKER_03]: She's no, you think of all the negative connotations

[00:38:01] [SPEAKER_03]: of a princess in pop culture.

[00:38:04] [SPEAKER_02]: What I love about this movie is like,

[00:38:06] [SPEAKER_02]: that's what she's like.

[00:38:07] [SPEAKER_02]: And in the Cloud City scenes where Lando's kind of treating

[00:38:10] [SPEAKER_02]: her like, oh a fancy lady has joined.

[00:38:12] [SPEAKER_02]: And she's just so uninterested.

[00:38:14] [SPEAKER_03]: Get the fuck out of here.

[00:38:15] [SPEAKER_03]: I don't need you.

[00:38:15] [SPEAKER_03]: I don't need anybody.

[00:38:16] [SPEAKER_03]: Cloud City.

[00:38:17] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm Princess Leia motherfucker.

[00:38:20] [SPEAKER_03]: So anyway, just to, you know,

[00:38:21] [SPEAKER_02]: the Hoth battle is really cool.

[00:38:22] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:38:23] [SPEAKER_02]: They escape.

[00:38:24] [SPEAKER_02]: It's a victory.

[00:38:25] [SPEAKER_02]: Vader shows up pretty much as the Millennium Falcon

[00:38:27] [SPEAKER_02]: is leaving.

[00:38:28] [SPEAKER_02]: And he's like, where are, god damn it.

[00:38:31] [SPEAKER_02]: Guys, choke some more people.

[00:38:34] [SPEAKER_03]: And he's like, I fucking, no,

[00:38:36] [SPEAKER_03]: I want to get here before they leave.

[00:38:38] [SPEAKER_03]: And much like Attack of the Clones.

[00:38:40] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[00:38:41] [SPEAKER_03]: This story then splits into two.

[00:38:43] [SPEAKER_03]: Very interesting how in both cases,

[00:38:45] [SPEAKER_03]: the second film, the middle film of the trilogy.

[00:38:47] [SPEAKER_03]: We've got two, everyone starts out together

[00:38:49] [SPEAKER_03]: and then splits apart.

[00:38:50] [SPEAKER_03]: Because New Hope has a lot of similar story structure

[00:38:52] [SPEAKER_03]: things to Phantom S.

[00:38:54] [SPEAKER_03]: I guess.

[00:38:55] [SPEAKER_03]: They end in some or ways.

[00:38:55] [SPEAKER_02]: And then just like a bunch of shit kind of happens

[00:38:57] [SPEAKER_03]: one after another.

[00:38:59] [SPEAKER_03]: Not as clear.

[00:39:00] [SPEAKER_03]: But these two are very, very similar actually

[00:39:02] [SPEAKER_03]: on a basic, far-off, blurry structural level.

[00:39:06] [SPEAKER_02]: So in Empire Strikes Back,

[00:39:09] [SPEAKER_02]: in this movie that we're talking about today,

[00:39:12] [SPEAKER_02]: Han, Leia, the droids, Chewbacca,

[00:39:15] [SPEAKER_02]: they get on the Millennium Falcon.

[00:39:16] [SPEAKER_02]: It's hyperdrive doesn't work.

[00:39:17] [SPEAKER_02]: And so that's their journey.

[00:39:20] [SPEAKER_02]: They got to get a new hyperdrive.

[00:39:21] [SPEAKER_02]: Luke and R2.

[00:39:22] [SPEAKER_02]: Sorry, it's three PO's on the Falcon.

[00:39:24] [SPEAKER_02]: R2's with Luke.

[00:39:25] [SPEAKER_02]: Gets in his X-wing and blasts off to Dagobah.

[00:39:28] [SPEAKER_02]: Try to find Yoda.

[00:39:29] [SPEAKER_02]: On this advice from Obi-Wan.

[00:39:31] [SPEAKER_02]: And we're all dreading it.

[00:39:32] [SPEAKER_03]: We're going, oh fuck, I hope they focus on Han and Leia.

[00:39:35] [SPEAKER_03]: He's gonna be all fear leads to anger.

[00:39:36] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[00:39:37] [SPEAKER_03]: This guy, the least funny guy in the galaxy.

[00:39:39] [SPEAKER_02]: He's gonna have built a bunch of new poop chairs.

[00:39:42] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, great.

[00:39:42] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh.

[00:39:43] [SPEAKER_02]: Guess what?

[00:39:45] [SPEAKER_02]: Should we do Yoda first?

[00:39:47] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:39:48] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, let's do the whole day of a sequence first.

[00:39:50] [SPEAKER_03]: In a shocking...

[00:39:51] [SPEAKER_03]: So we're cutting between these two stories.

[00:39:53] [SPEAKER_03]: In a shocking twist.

[00:39:56] [SPEAKER_03]: Yoda is my motherfucking boy.

[00:39:58] [SPEAKER_03]: He's the best.

[00:39:59] [SPEAKER_00]: Yoda's my boy.

[00:40:00] [SPEAKER_00]: He knows how to deal with other people and talk even to someone and not be disrespectful to them.

[00:40:08] [SPEAKER_00]: He's kind of sly.

[00:40:09] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, he has good interpersonal skills.

[00:40:12] [SPEAKER_03]: He's really funny, David.

[00:40:13] [SPEAKER_03]: Especially at the beginning.

[00:40:14] [SPEAKER_03]: He's a laugh and a half.

[00:40:15] [SPEAKER_03]: This is the best comedy I've seen.

[00:40:16] [SPEAKER_03]: He's very...

[00:40:16] [SPEAKER_03]: Well, he's a puppet.

[00:40:18] [SPEAKER_02]: He's a puppet.

[00:40:19] [SPEAKER_02]: Puppeted by Frank Oz.

[00:40:20] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh, surprising.

[00:40:21] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh!

[00:40:22] [SPEAKER_02]: That if you let Frank Oz work a puppet.

[00:40:24] [SPEAKER_02]: It seems like an actual character.

[00:40:26] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:40:26] [SPEAKER_02]: And he's more muppety as a result.

[00:40:29] [SPEAKER_02]: And he has this thing where he kind of goes like,

[00:40:31] [SPEAKER_02]: Which is very muppety.

[00:40:33] [SPEAKER_02]: He's much older.

[00:40:34] [SPEAKER_02]: But it's great.

[00:40:34] [SPEAKER_02]: He looks older.

[00:40:35] [SPEAKER_02]: He's moving very slowly.

[00:40:36] [SPEAKER_02]: He's supposed to be kind of a little baddie, right?

[00:40:39] [SPEAKER_02]: Isn't that the idea?

[00:40:40] [SPEAKER_02]: He's gone a little crazy.

[00:40:41] [SPEAKER_03]: Well, at the beginning we think he's lost his goddamn mind.

[00:40:43] [SPEAKER_02]: Which makes sense because you know what?

[00:40:45] [SPEAKER_02]: He presided over the death of every Jedi.

[00:40:48] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:40:48] [SPEAKER_02]: Because of his incompetence.

[00:40:50] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:40:50] [SPEAKER_02]: And then he secluded himself on a swamp planet alone for 24 years.

[00:40:54] [SPEAKER_02]: Hasn't talked to anyone else.

[00:40:55] [SPEAKER_03]: He's probably going to be pretty crazy.

[00:40:57] [SPEAKER_03]: Surrounded by snakes.

[00:40:58] [SPEAKER_03]: He lives in a little hut.

[00:40:59] [SPEAKER_03]: He lives in like a Kebler Elf tree.

[00:41:02] [SPEAKER_02]: It's a crazy set.

[00:41:03] [SPEAKER_02]: Incredible.

[00:41:03] [SPEAKER_02]: It's prime 80s muppet set.

[00:41:06] [SPEAKER_02]: You know what I mean?

[00:41:07] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:41:07] [SPEAKER_02]: It's a lot of shit in the background.

[00:41:09] [SPEAKER_02]: Weird animals.

[00:41:10] [SPEAKER_02]: Swampy.

[00:41:10] [SPEAKER_02]: Snakes littered around.

[00:41:12] [SPEAKER_02]: Like bats going like,

[00:41:13] [SPEAKER_02]: It looks like the never ending story or fucking labyrinth or whatever.

[00:41:18] [SPEAKER_02]: But the way it looks like gets there.

[00:41:19] [SPEAKER_03]: Fragile rock.

[00:41:20] [SPEAKER_02]: He lives on Fragile Rock.

[00:41:21] [SPEAKER_03]: It's like this, like a shithole.

[00:41:23] [SPEAKER_03]: Where Yoda lives here?

[00:41:24] [SPEAKER_03]: What's going on?

[00:41:24] [SPEAKER_02]: Well you know, and in the deleted scene we saw it briefly.

[00:41:26] [SPEAKER_02]: Right.

[00:41:28] [SPEAKER_03]: And then he like sees the thing scampering,

[00:41:31] [SPEAKER_03]: crawling through his lunchbox,

[00:41:33] [SPEAKER_02]: eating snacks.

[00:41:34] [SPEAKER_02]: And Luke's like,

[00:41:35] [SPEAKER_02]: whether we do in here he lands in like a bog.

[00:41:37] [SPEAKER_02]: Right.

[00:41:38] [SPEAKER_02]: And he's like, who the fuck are you?

[00:41:39] [SPEAKER_02]: Get out of here.

[00:41:40] [SPEAKER_02]: Now should we say Luke?

[00:41:42] [SPEAKER_02]: Luke's a pain in the ass.

[00:41:44] [SPEAKER_02]: Like he's a huge pain in the ass.

[00:41:45] [SPEAKER_02]: I like him in this one.

[00:41:45] [SPEAKER_02]: You like him in this one?

[00:41:46] [SPEAKER_02]: He's...

[00:41:47] [SPEAKER_03]: Remember how I started?

[00:41:48] [SPEAKER_03]: I wanted to give him originally a fail

[00:41:50] [SPEAKER_03]: in our performance review in the last episode.

[00:41:51] [SPEAKER_03]: I think his performance is better.

[00:41:52] [SPEAKER_03]: That's the thing.

[00:41:53] [SPEAKER_03]: It's not...

[00:41:54] [SPEAKER_03]: He's gone off and made the big red one with Sam Fuller.

[00:41:56] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[00:41:57] [SPEAKER_03]: The reason I wanted to give him...

[00:41:59] [SPEAKER_03]: Just talking about Mark Hamill here.

[00:42:00] [SPEAKER_03]: A fail.

[00:42:01] [SPEAKER_03]: I know.

[00:42:02] [SPEAKER_03]: The reason I wanted to give him a fail in the last movie is only because I want to be

[00:42:05] [SPEAKER_03]: able to show how much I think his performance has improved in this film.

[00:42:09] [SPEAKER_03]: You know?

[00:42:09] [SPEAKER_03]: And I know the last film he's playing like a whiny kid, you know?

[00:42:13] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[00:42:14] [SPEAKER_03]: And he's playing immature but like the way that he shows the newfound intelligence,

[00:42:20] [SPEAKER_03]: confidence, worldliness, you know a guy who's seen stuff,

[00:42:23] [SPEAKER_03]: he's had his face slashed by a wampa.

[00:42:25] [SPEAKER_03]: I think this is a really good performance.

[00:42:28] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:42:29] [SPEAKER_03]: Is a little annoying as a character?

[00:42:31] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[00:42:32] [SPEAKER_02]: Well, he's in this phase where it's like...

[00:42:36] [SPEAKER_02]: He's got this potential.

[00:42:38] [SPEAKER_02]: He's got the charts potential.

[00:42:39] [SPEAKER_02]: Doesn't know quite how to realize it.

[00:42:41] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:42:41] [SPEAKER_02]: He's got all these new...

[00:42:42] [SPEAKER_02]: It's sort of a puberty.

[00:42:43] [SPEAKER_02]: He's having like this magic puberty, right?

[00:42:45] [SPEAKER_02]: Because it's like he's suddenly getting visions.

[00:42:48] [SPEAKER_02]: He's like kind of able to levitate things and use it and jump around.

[00:42:53] [SPEAKER_02]: But it's like, you know, there's sort of this extended montage basically of Yoda sort of training him.

[00:43:00] [SPEAKER_02]: And Luke is like okay at everything and he's really frustrated all the time.

[00:43:05] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:43:06] [SPEAKER_02]: He just wants to go.

[00:43:07] [SPEAKER_02]: He wants to get Darth Vader.

[00:43:08] [SPEAKER_02]: He wants to fucking be a Jedi.

[00:43:10] [SPEAKER_03]: But we're missing the biggest point here.

[00:43:12] [SPEAKER_03]: When Luke lands a Dagobah and goes, hey, do you know how to help me find Yoda?

[00:43:17] [SPEAKER_03]: Yoda's like, uh, yeah, I know Yoda.

[00:43:20] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, he's pretty coy about it.

[00:43:22] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh, he straight up does not let on that he is Yoda.

[00:43:25] [SPEAKER_02]: And it's sort of a, you know, like the idea is like don't judge a book by its cover, mother fucker.

[00:43:30] [SPEAKER_03]: Well, and Guy seems to have fully lost his mind.

[00:43:33] [SPEAKER_03]: Like it's bananas.

[00:43:34] [SPEAKER_03]: It's like neat and carrot sticks and like making weird sounds and like fucking snakes.

[00:43:40] [SPEAKER_02]: He's made this like stew that he's like, he keeps talking about how good it is.

[00:43:45] [SPEAKER_02]: And Luke like eats it and is like grossed out by it.

[00:43:48] [SPEAKER_02]: I really like that scene.

[00:43:49] [SPEAKER_03]: And Luke's like tap in his watch and go in like Yoda.

[00:43:52] [SPEAKER_03]: Can we get to, can you introduce me to Yoda?

[00:43:54] [SPEAKER_03]: And he finally figures it out.

[00:43:55] [SPEAKER_03]: Well, because what happens?

[00:43:57] [SPEAKER_03]: Obi-Wan starts talking.

[00:43:58] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[00:43:59] [SPEAKER_03]: And Yoda starts talking to him and he's like no patience this boy has.

[00:44:04] [SPEAKER_03]: And Obi-Wan's like, you were kind of the same way.

[00:44:06] [SPEAKER_03]: I mean, remember me?

[00:44:08] [SPEAKER_02]: Now this is a little cute.

[00:44:09] [SPEAKER_02]: Same way about me.

[00:44:10] [SPEAKER_02]: Can I say this?

[00:44:11] [SPEAKER_02]: Because Yoda didn't really train Obi-Wan.

[00:44:14] [SPEAKER_02]: No, not at all.

[00:44:16] [SPEAKER_02]: Well, I think maybe when Obi-Wan was a child, because it seems like Yoda's kind of in charge of the younglings.

[00:44:20] [SPEAKER_02]: So maybe like that's when the starter preschool teacher Obi-Wan Yoda should say to Obi-Wan like, yeah, he were a little defiant when he were five.

[00:44:28] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:44:28] [SPEAKER_03]: He got over it.

[00:44:29] [SPEAKER_03]: This is a grown man in front of me.

[00:44:31] [SPEAKER_03]: There are definitely some continuity problems with these movies.

[00:44:34] [SPEAKER_03]: There are.

[00:44:34] [SPEAKER_02]: But what I like about it is the risk is greater.

[00:44:37] [SPEAKER_02]: Right?

[00:44:38] [SPEAKER_02]: If we already know that Anakin was in trouble at age 10 or whatever.

[00:44:42] [SPEAKER_02]: Luke, God, you're saying like this is going to be hard.

[00:44:45] [SPEAKER_03]: Like his father.

[00:44:45] [SPEAKER_03]: He says like his father.

[00:44:46] [SPEAKER_03]: You know, his father.

[00:44:47] [SPEAKER_03]: His anger.

[00:44:48] [SPEAKER_03]: Impatience, this and that.

[00:44:49] [SPEAKER_03]: But he's not an asshole in the same way.

[00:44:51] [SPEAKER_03]: No, definitely not.

[00:44:52] [SPEAKER_03]: He's well intentioned.

[00:44:53] [SPEAKER_03]: And Luke puts it together.

[00:44:55] [SPEAKER_03]: He's like, oh shit, you're Yoda.

[00:44:56] [SPEAKER_03]: Gone there.

[00:44:57] [SPEAKER_00]: Like the thought I had though was when he goes too old and he's insistent upon that.

[00:45:02] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm like, this is the last motherfucker you got.

[00:45:04] [SPEAKER_03]: But remember, they said the same thing about Anakin.

[00:45:06] [SPEAKER_03]: And Anakin was like 10.

[00:45:08] [SPEAKER_03]: They said he's too old to start training.

[00:45:09] [SPEAKER_00]: Right.

[00:45:10] [SPEAKER_00]: But there was also an abundance of Jedi.

[00:45:12] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.

[00:45:13] [SPEAKER_00]: There's one dude.

[00:45:14] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.

[00:45:15] [SPEAKER_00]: And this is all you got.

[00:45:16] [SPEAKER_00]: You can't be like, nah, he's too old.

[00:45:18] [SPEAKER_03]: This is something like about Yoda.

[00:45:19] [SPEAKER_03]: I do think Yoda's kind of heartbroken.

[00:45:21] [SPEAKER_03]: He's like, maybe it's just over.

[00:45:22] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I can see that.

[00:45:23] [SPEAKER_03]: Maybe it's better to have no Jedi's than an old Jedi.

[00:45:25] [SPEAKER_03]: You know?

[00:45:26] [SPEAKER_03]: Right.

[00:45:27] [SPEAKER_03]: I mean, Yoda seems to have fully lost it.

[00:45:29] [SPEAKER_03]: But once Luke puts it together and is like, oh shit, you're Yoda.

[00:45:32] [SPEAKER_03]: Yoda starts to pull it together.

[00:45:34] [SPEAKER_03]: And it's like, oh, maybe that craziness was a test.

[00:45:37] [SPEAKER_03]: I do think he's gone a little baddie, but he also wanted to test his patience, his reserve,

[00:45:41] [SPEAKER_03]: you know?

[00:45:41] [SPEAKER_03]: Totally.

[00:45:42] [SPEAKER_03]: And the ghost of Obi-Wan is like, give him a shot.

[00:45:45] [SPEAKER_03]: Right.

[00:45:46] [SPEAKER_03]: And so he's still like hard on him.

[00:45:48] [SPEAKER_03]: And he's still got a lot of goofy antics.

[00:45:50] [SPEAKER_03]: But like, he starts training him like a real person and he relates to him like a real person.

[00:45:54] [SPEAKER_03]: He doesn't go like the way he used to with Anakin.

[00:45:56] [SPEAKER_03]: Like, you're angry.

[00:45:57] [SPEAKER_03]: Stop it.

[00:45:57] [SPEAKER_03]: You know, he like explains to him why the things he's doing are this or that.

[00:46:02] [SPEAKER_03]: And throws out like a lot of fucking good idioms, you know?

[00:46:05] [SPEAKER_03]: He does.

[00:46:05] [SPEAKER_00]: It's a whole new side of Yoda.

[00:46:06] [SPEAKER_00]: I like it.

[00:46:07] [SPEAKER_00]: This guy rules.

[00:46:08] [SPEAKER_00]: I like this guy.

[00:46:10] [SPEAKER_02]: It says do or do not.

[00:46:12] [SPEAKER_02]: Don't just say no to.

[00:46:12] [SPEAKER_03]: There is no try.

[00:46:13] [SPEAKER_02]: Well, also there's this thing where Luke says, I'm not afraid.

[00:46:18] [SPEAKER_02]: And Yoda suddenly is like, you will be.

[00:46:20] [SPEAKER_02]: And you're like, oh that was weird.

[00:46:22] [SPEAKER_02]: Great moron.

[00:46:22] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:46:23] [SPEAKER_02]: Because the puppet looks kind of demented.

[00:46:25] [SPEAKER_02]: Like in the way where the CGI creature just code in.

[00:46:29] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, it could not.

[00:46:29] [SPEAKER_02]: So on the one side we've got this Yoda thing.

[00:46:33] [SPEAKER_02]: And it becomes like a Rocky 4 training montage.

[00:46:35] [SPEAKER_02]: It does, except for this.

[00:46:36] [SPEAKER_02]: It's not a montage.

[00:46:36] [SPEAKER_02]: It's extended.

[00:46:37] [SPEAKER_02]: But it's kind of an extended montage, yes, in terms of it.

[00:46:40] [SPEAKER_02]: But it has except for there's no scene in any Rocky movie where he wanders into a cave

[00:46:44] [SPEAKER_02]: of his own nightmares.

[00:46:46] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh, let's talk about this.

[00:46:47] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh my god!

[00:46:48] [SPEAKER_02]: This scene is like no other scene in any movie.

[00:46:51] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:46:51] [SPEAKER_02]: In the Star Wars movies.

[00:46:52] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:46:53] [SPEAKER_03]: It's crazy.

[00:46:54] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[00:46:55] [SPEAKER_03]: I mean they're talking about the fear thing.

[00:46:57] [SPEAKER_03]: He wanders into a cave.

[00:46:58] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[00:46:59] [SPEAKER_02]: Well because Luke's like, I'm ready, I'm ready.

[00:47:01] [SPEAKER_02]: And you're just like, oh yeah, sure, just walked into this cave right now.

[00:47:04] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:47:05] [SPEAKER_02]: You won't need weapons.

[00:47:06] [SPEAKER_02]: Luke keeps his weapon.

[00:47:07] [SPEAKER_02]: Yes.

[00:47:08] [SPEAKER_02]: And it becomes defiant.

[00:47:10] [SPEAKER_03]: It becomes this like very herky jerky like-

[00:47:12] [SPEAKER_03]: I would have killed my weapon too.

[00:47:13] [SPEAKER_02]: This is a swamp planet with snakes.

[00:47:14] [SPEAKER_03]: Anyway.

[00:47:14] [SPEAKER_02]: But it becomes this like herky jerky low frame rate thing.

[00:47:17] [SPEAKER_02]: Very weird.

[00:47:18] [SPEAKER_02]: This scene, can we acknowledge?

[00:47:20] [SPEAKER_02]: This scene frightened the shit out of me when I was a kid.

[00:47:22] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh terrifying.

[00:47:22] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh my god.

[00:47:23] [SPEAKER_02]: Well you saw this movie when you were a kid.

[00:47:24] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:47:25] [SPEAKER_02]: It's like I'm Fox Mulder, all these buried memories are coming to the fore.

[00:47:29] [SPEAKER_03]: He slashes his head off, mask falls away.

[00:47:32] [SPEAKER_03]: Who is it?

[00:47:32] [SPEAKER_03]: Luke Skywalker.

[00:47:33] [SPEAKER_03]: It's like that's the fear right there.

[00:47:38] [SPEAKER_02]: And there you go.

[00:47:40] [SPEAKER_02]: Isn't that better than maybe sitting in front of a bunch of pooping jedis who are pooping

[00:47:45] [SPEAKER_02]: and in between poops they're like, oh but yeah you can't be afraid or fall in love

[00:47:50] [SPEAKER_02]: because like emotions can be really bad.

[00:47:53] [SPEAKER_02]: You know we get it.

[00:47:54] [SPEAKER_03]: Maybe also don't show all of Anakin's Jedi training.

[00:47:58] [SPEAKER_03]: Maybe don't have all of Anakin's Jedi training happen off camera.

[00:48:02] [SPEAKER_03]: Maybe not.

[00:48:02] [SPEAKER_03]: Because watching someone go through Jedi training is cool.

[00:48:05] [SPEAKER_03]: And this is Yoda in a swamp without like the fucking facilities.

[00:48:08] [SPEAKER_03]: You know he doesn't have like a gym or anything to work on.

[00:48:10] [SPEAKER_03]: But he's like, hey Luke why don't you do a handstand for 10 minutes while I like stand next to you.

[00:48:15] [SPEAKER_03]: Carry around in a backpack, like jump around and then he's like you know trying to lift stuff

[00:48:19] [SPEAKER_03]: and he's like I can't do it.

[00:48:20] [SPEAKER_03]: And Yoda's like lifts up the X-wing which was submerged into the swamp.

[00:48:25] [SPEAKER_03]: Because Luke's like it's too big.

[00:48:26] [SPEAKER_03]: It's too big you can't do it if you're done.

[00:48:28] [SPEAKER_02]: Boom! I just did it and I'm a tiny little shrimp man.

[00:48:31] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm a little old guy.

[00:48:33] [SPEAKER_02]: And Luke's like well it's impossible.

[00:48:36] [SPEAKER_02]: And he's like that's why you fail.

[00:48:38] [SPEAKER_02]: Fuck you.

[00:48:39] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:48:39] [SPEAKER_02]: And he takes pisses on him.

[00:48:40] [SPEAKER_03]: You fail because you believe it's impossible.

[00:48:45] [SPEAKER_02]: It's great.

[00:48:46] [SPEAKER_00]: Let's move along with this because we gotta get to the other story.

[00:48:48] [SPEAKER_00]: Ben I love this stuff.

[00:48:49] [SPEAKER_00]: But no of course we gotta move along.

[00:48:51] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh man.

[00:48:53] [SPEAKER_02]: So on the other side of the coin is actually fun for me.

[00:48:57] [SPEAKER_02]: On one side of the coin you've got Luke straining frustrated and eventually tormented by visions of his friends in danger.

[00:49:04] [SPEAKER_03]: And Yoda keeps on saying like you gotta stay here and finish your trading.

[00:49:08] [SPEAKER_03]: And Luke's like and let my friends die and Yoda's like maybe.

[00:49:11] [SPEAKER_03]: Maybe.

[00:49:11] [SPEAKER_03]: Would you rather if you go, if you don't finish your trading you go try to save them and you die as well then everyone loses.

[00:49:19] [SPEAKER_03]: Wouldn't your friends rather that you let them die so that you can become stronger and fight in the name of their cause.

[00:49:26] [SPEAKER_03]: And he's like I don't know Yoda.

[00:49:28] [SPEAKER_03]: And Yoda's very like stern about this.

[00:49:30] [SPEAKER_03]: He's like no.

[00:49:31] [SPEAKER_03]: Not stern but he's like very very strong minded about it.

[00:49:34] [SPEAKER_02]: But he's like you need to finish your training and you're not ready.

[00:49:38] [SPEAKER_02]: But he gets like he's not like saying like I don't know what's gonna happen to your friends.

[00:49:43] [SPEAKER_02]: He's like I don't know you know the future's tough to tell.

[00:49:46] [SPEAKER_02]: Maybe they're gonna be in hurt maybe not.

[00:49:49] [SPEAKER_02]: They're definitely in pain.

[00:49:50] [SPEAKER_02]: Back on the Millennium Falcon.

[00:49:52] [SPEAKER_02]: It's just the hottest shit.

[00:49:54] [SPEAKER_02]: It's just cool shit happens.

[00:49:55] [SPEAKER_02]: It's just Han and Leia just bantering Han they're making out.

[00:49:59] [SPEAKER_02]: Threepio is banging around hilariously.

[00:50:03] [SPEAKER_02]: So funny.

[00:50:04] [SPEAKER_02]: He's so funny in this movie.

[00:50:06] [SPEAKER_02]: Remember when he wasn't funny for one millisecond in the first three movies?

[00:50:10] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.

[00:50:11] [SPEAKER_00]: Just as evidence.

[00:50:12] [SPEAKER_00]: We're gonna cut to a quick clip.

[00:50:14] [SPEAKER_00]: Ben is obsessed with this clip.

[00:50:15] [SPEAKER_03]: Look at this clip he's gonna cut to he's gonna find it later and cut in.

[00:50:18] [SPEAKER_00]: Oh man I love this stuff.

[00:50:46] [SPEAKER_05]: After all I've been trying to do my job.

[00:50:48] [SPEAKER_00]: That was a clip so funny.

[00:50:49] [SPEAKER_00]: That was the clip Ben.

[00:50:50] [SPEAKER_00]: He's a funny very funny character in these movies.

[00:50:53] [SPEAKER_02]: He's this great foil.

[00:50:54] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:50:54] [SPEAKER_02]: And what I like is it's sort of a mirroring of because R2 I guess needs to be with a loop.

[00:51:00] [SPEAKER_02]: It's kind of mirroring the R2 C-3PO relationship from a new hope.

[00:51:05] [SPEAKER_02]: He and Chewbacca have a really funny relationship.

[00:51:06] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh yeah but you know Han and Threepio.

[00:51:09] [SPEAKER_02]: I just love this scene where Han is Mackinon Leia.

[00:51:13] [SPEAKER_02]: Mackinon Leia.

[00:51:14] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh god yes.

[00:51:15] [SPEAKER_02]: Yes.

[00:51:15] [SPEAKER_02]: And then Threepio interrupts him with like this useless piece of information.

[00:51:18] [SPEAKER_03]: They know they fucking straight up make out.

[00:51:21] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah they make it out.

[00:51:21] [SPEAKER_03]: They start kissing.

[00:51:22] [SPEAKER_03]: It's such a hot scene.

[00:51:23] [SPEAKER_03]: It looks so hot we're squirting left and right and then C-3PO comes in.

[00:51:26] [SPEAKER_03]: You're trembling.

[00:51:27] [SPEAKER_03]: And like oh god it's so good.

[00:51:28] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh my god I want someone to talk to me like that.

[00:51:32] [SPEAKER_00]: Me too.

[00:51:33] [SPEAKER_03]: That's all I want in life.

[00:51:35] [SPEAKER_03]: Someone to call me out on my constant tremble.

[00:51:38] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh on.

[00:51:38] [SPEAKER_03]: They call me the tremble.

[00:51:39] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh and Threepio interrupts them.

[00:51:41] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:51:41] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm really excited.

[00:51:42] [SPEAKER_02]: And Han's like thank you in like totally and Threepio's like oh you're welcome.

[00:51:46] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah really great.

[00:51:48] [SPEAKER_03]: It's funny.

[00:51:48] [SPEAKER_03]: It's good banter.

[00:51:49] [SPEAKER_03]: Isn't it good bam?

[00:51:50] [SPEAKER_03]: They go into a cave.

[00:51:51] [SPEAKER_03]: They go into an asteroid field.

[00:51:53] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:51:54] [SPEAKER_02]: And into a cave and there's these minox these weird bats.

[00:51:57] [SPEAKER_02]: Cool.

[00:51:58] [SPEAKER_02]: And it turns out they've been swallowed by like a space slug.

[00:52:01] [SPEAKER_03]: Like a giant space slug.

[00:52:02] [SPEAKER_03]: That's awesome.

[00:52:02] [SPEAKER_03]: They were in a space slug.

[00:52:03] [SPEAKER_03]: They get out just in time.

[00:52:04] [SPEAKER_03]: Now all same.

[00:52:05] [SPEAKER_03]: The cave is closing in.

[00:52:06] [SPEAKER_03]: He goes that's no cave.

[00:52:07] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[00:52:07] [SPEAKER_02]: And it's teeth.

[00:52:07] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm a little annoyed because Leia is a little bit of a dits in these scenes because she's

[00:52:12] [SPEAKER_02]: like shrieking about the bats and she's like the cave is closing and it's like it's very

[00:52:15] [SPEAKER_02]: obviously a mouth Leia come on.

[00:52:17] [SPEAKER_02]: But nonetheless it's great in general.

[00:52:19] [SPEAKER_02]: I love the idea of the space slug.

[00:52:21] [SPEAKER_02]: The shot of the millennium falcon like slipping through the teeth.

[00:52:24] [SPEAKER_02]: So cool.

[00:52:25] [SPEAKER_01]: Very cool.

[00:52:27] [SPEAKER_02]: Very cool.

[00:52:28] [SPEAKER_02]: Okay so now.

[00:52:30] [SPEAKER_02]: So eventually they're trying to evade the empire.

[00:52:32] [SPEAKER_02]: They can't fix their hyperdrive.

[00:52:34] [SPEAKER_02]: They end up on cloud city.

[00:52:36] [SPEAKER_03]: They get a message from his friend.

[00:52:38] [SPEAKER_02]: Well no they're just scanning for signals.

[00:52:41] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh right.

[00:52:41] [SPEAKER_02]: And he's like Bespin, cloud city, Lando.

[00:52:44] [SPEAKER_02]: My old friend Lando will go see him.

[00:52:47] [SPEAKER_03]: I can trust him as far as I throw him.

[00:52:48] [SPEAKER_03]: He's a scoundrel like me but I'll say this.

[00:52:50] [SPEAKER_03]: He won the millennium falcon from him.

[00:52:52] [SPEAKER_03]: Right.

[00:52:52] [SPEAKER_03]: A game of chance.

[00:52:53] [SPEAKER_03]: And he also goes probably a game of chance cubes.

[00:52:56] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh problem.

[00:52:57] [SPEAKER_02]: Where are the chance cubes?

[00:52:57] [SPEAKER_03]: Where are the chance cubes?

[00:52:58] [SPEAKER_03]: That's the one problem.

[00:52:59] [SPEAKER_03]: One big complaint.

[00:53:00] [SPEAKER_03]: Where the fuck are the chance cubes?

[00:53:01] [SPEAKER_03]: Where the fuck are them chance cubes George?

[00:53:03] [SPEAKER_03]: There's been a whole scene of chance cubes throwing.

[00:53:06] [SPEAKER_03]: Sorry, I'm yelling.

[00:53:07] [SPEAKER_03]: Good flashback sequence.

[00:53:09] [SPEAKER_03]: Are you yelling at me because my levels were so low?

[00:53:11] [SPEAKER_03]: Yes.

[00:53:12] [SPEAKER_03]: Okay sorry.

[00:53:12] [SPEAKER_03]: Ben doesn't want to have more work to do later.

[00:53:15] [SPEAKER_03]: The key thing he says is like, she's like do you think it'll be safe there and he's

[00:53:19] [SPEAKER_03]: like.

[00:53:19] [SPEAKER_03]: He doesn't like the empire.

[00:53:20] [SPEAKER_03]: No one hates the empire more than land.

[00:53:22] [SPEAKER_03]: Hates it.

[00:53:22] [SPEAKER_03]: Okay so we get to cloud city.

[00:53:24] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh Lando Clarissian is played by.

[00:53:26] [SPEAKER_03]: Willyd Williams.

[00:53:26] [SPEAKER_03]: Willyd Williams.

[00:53:27] [SPEAKER_02]: At the height of like, now people have complained.

[00:53:31] [SPEAKER_02]: He is wearing like a purple space cape and he looks like a freaking pimple.

[00:53:35] [SPEAKER_02]: He looks like a space pamper.

[00:53:36] [SPEAKER_02]: But it's awesome.

[00:53:37] [SPEAKER_02]: I don't care.

[00:53:37] [SPEAKER_02]: I think he looks great.

[00:53:38] [SPEAKER_02]: I don't care either.

[00:53:39] [SPEAKER_02]: And he's like got this like beautiful mustache and he's just like purring at Leia.

[00:53:45] [SPEAKER_02]: He's just like oh welcome Bespin.

[00:53:48] [SPEAKER_02]: This is my cloud city.

[00:53:49] [SPEAKER_02]: Check it out.

[00:53:50] [SPEAKER_02]: Can I throw out one complaint about.

[00:53:52] [SPEAKER_02]: He's kind of like mystery from the pickup artist.

[00:53:55] [SPEAKER_03]: This movie might have.

[00:53:56] [SPEAKER_03]: He's not.

[00:53:57] [SPEAKER_03]: He's great.

[00:53:57] [SPEAKER_03]: I love him.

[00:53:58] [SPEAKER_03]: This movie might have too much top shelf man meat.

[00:54:02] [SPEAKER_03]: We have some fine ass cuts of man meat in this movie.

[00:54:05] [SPEAKER_03]: Who's the third?

[00:54:07] [SPEAKER_03]: Mark Hamill.

[00:54:08] [SPEAKER_03]: I think good looking guy.

[00:54:09] [SPEAKER_03]: He's got a good arm.

[00:54:10] [SPEAKER_03]: He looks so fucked up in this movie.

[00:54:12] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, no sorry.

[00:54:13] [SPEAKER_03]: I like the battle damage on.

[00:54:15] [SPEAKER_03]: The first one he was like a pretty boy and this one now he's got like a little

[00:54:17] [SPEAKER_03]: rough on the edges.

[00:54:19] [SPEAKER_03]: No I think Piat's here.

[00:54:20] [SPEAKER_03]: Here number three here.

[00:54:20] [SPEAKER_03]: But Darth Vader.

[00:54:21] [SPEAKER_03]: Darth Vader's got a fucking you could slice a steak on his pants.

[00:54:23] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh we haven't even mentioned.

[00:54:25] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh there's that scene.

[00:54:27] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh yeah you see the mask.

[00:54:28] [SPEAKER_00]: Darth Vader apparently lives in like a little cube.

[00:54:30] [SPEAKER_00]: He lives in a chest cube.

[00:54:31] [SPEAKER_03]: He's got like a robot nest.

[00:54:32] [SPEAKER_00]: I thought of it as like a lung.

[00:54:34] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah I think it's like an iron lung.

[00:54:36] [SPEAKER_00]: He can take off his helmet in there.

[00:54:38] [SPEAKER_03]: It's like an orb that like comes up and he like sits in it all the time.

[00:54:41] [SPEAKER_03]: And one guy interrupts him when he's breathing.

[00:54:42] [SPEAKER_02]: I think it's Ozal interrupts him and that you see hit the back of his head all scarred.

[00:54:49] [SPEAKER_02]: Hasty white.

[00:54:50] [SPEAKER_02]: Very white.

[00:54:52] [SPEAKER_02]: And like there's this weird sense that like oh I'm intruding.

[00:54:55] [SPEAKER_02]: You know like even the audience feels this way.

[00:54:58] [SPEAKER_02]: It's like oh we look at person.

[00:54:59] [SPEAKER_02]: He's vulnerable it's weird.

[00:55:01] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah he shouldn't be vulnerable.

[00:55:02] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah and he's telling him the emperor is calling.

[00:55:05] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah and Vader's like fucking let's get out of the asteroid field we're gonna go

[00:55:09] [SPEAKER_02]: signal for the emperor.

[00:55:10] [SPEAKER_02]: He is in the emperor's palm.

[00:55:12] [SPEAKER_02]: The emperor calls him it's Dolde and McDermott as we remember him.

[00:55:17] [SPEAKER_02]: Yep.

[00:55:17] [SPEAKER_02]: And he's like hey if you felt this Luke Skywalker thing going on what's that?

[00:55:23] [SPEAKER_03]: Right.

[00:55:24] [SPEAKER_03]: Who's that dude?

[00:55:24] [SPEAKER_03]: He calls him Luke Skywalker too.

[00:55:27] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[00:55:27] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[00:55:28] [SPEAKER_03]: What's going on buddy?

[00:55:30] [SPEAKER_03]: The guy who has the same last name as you.

[00:55:32] [SPEAKER_02]: And Darth Vader's like he could be a powerful ally if he was turned.

[00:55:36] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:55:36] [SPEAKER_02]: Right that's kind of all that happens.

[00:55:38] [SPEAKER_02]: They talk about the great disturbance in the forest.

[00:55:40] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:55:42] [SPEAKER_02]: It's a little yeah like you say it's a little weird because it's like we know

[00:55:45] [SPEAKER_02]: who this is.

[00:55:46] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah but whatever.

[00:55:47] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah George we've seen five of these movies now.

[00:55:50] [SPEAKER_03]: They get to Cloud City.

[00:55:52] [SPEAKER_03]: Lando greets them with open arms.

[00:55:54] [SPEAKER_03]: Guy looks good.

[00:55:56] [SPEAKER_03]: I want to take a mustache ride.

[00:55:58] [SPEAKER_03]: He does a little joke with Han where he pretends to be mad then he's like ah you're alright.

[00:56:02] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah he's definitely like laying some like smack on Leia some Mac rather.

[00:56:07] [SPEAKER_03]: He's laying some Mac.

[00:56:08] [SPEAKER_03]: Did not age well though.

[00:56:10] [SPEAKER_00]: I like that I mean it's like it's part of his character.

[00:56:13] [SPEAKER_00]: Oh the way he macks Leia.

[00:56:14] [SPEAKER_00]: The way he goes about it.

[00:56:15] [SPEAKER_00]: He's a little sure he's creepy.

[00:56:17] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.

[00:56:18] [SPEAKER_00]: Oh he's creep.

[00:56:19] [SPEAKER_02]: It's not the best vibe to it but that's okay.

[00:56:21] [SPEAKER_02]: But I think it's also supposed to establish there's this like slight dread where you're

[00:56:24] [SPEAKER_02]: like what's this guy's deals.

[00:56:26] [SPEAKER_02]: You're just trying to like kidnap Leia.

[00:56:28] [SPEAKER_03]: You can't get a read on him and he's like showing them around Cloud City.

[00:56:31] [SPEAKER_03]: And he's like I hate the Empire.

[00:56:32] [SPEAKER_03]: I hate the Empire.

[00:56:33] [SPEAKER_03]: This is a great place.

[00:56:34] [SPEAKER_02]: And so it was like well you're doing great for yourself and the whole time I think we

[00:56:37] [SPEAKER_02]: were just like the other shoes about to drop here right.

[00:56:39] [SPEAKER_03]: C-3PO goes into a corridor because he like sees another droid or something.

[00:56:43] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh that's right.

[00:56:44] [SPEAKER_02]: It goes into a hallway.

[00:56:45] [SPEAKER_03]: And then he's like what's going on here and then you just hear the door close and like

[00:56:49] [SPEAKER_03]: loud sounds.

[00:56:50] [SPEAKER_03]: Chewbacca is looking for C-3PO.

[00:56:52] [SPEAKER_03]: He like can't find it.

[00:56:52] [SPEAKER_02]: Chewbacca is the only one who gives a shit about C-3PO.

[00:56:54] [SPEAKER_02]: They have a weird friendship development.

[00:56:56] [SPEAKER_02]: They do.

[00:56:56] [SPEAKER_02]: They do actually I like them a lot because then of course 3PO is recovered as just like

[00:57:00] [SPEAKER_02]: bits.

[00:57:01] [SPEAKER_02]: Right.

[00:57:01] [SPEAKER_02]: And Chewbacca kind of just carries them around on his back.

[00:57:04] [SPEAKER_02]: It's kind of great.

[00:57:05] [SPEAKER_02]: And also there's this thing that we forgot to mention where Boba Fett.

[00:57:13] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh this is huge.

[00:57:14] [SPEAKER_03]: Boba Fett from Attack of the Clone.

[00:57:16] [SPEAKER_03]: The son of Django Fett who now has armor near identical to his father's in different colors.

[00:57:21] [SPEAKER_02]: It's all scored and green and red and it's crazy looking.

[00:57:23] [SPEAKER_03]: It looks super cool.

[00:57:24] [SPEAKER_03]: So Darth Vader and like a bunch of bounty hunters.

[00:57:26] [SPEAKER_03]: Darth Vader contrasts with bounty hunters.

[00:57:26] [SPEAKER_03]: And he's like find these fuckers.

[00:57:29] [SPEAKER_00]: Check out this scene.

[00:57:29] [SPEAKER_00]: It's weird too that his dad is just like all around him all the time.

[00:57:35] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah he's like surrounded by copies of his dad.

[00:57:38] [SPEAKER_03]: Do we think all the troopers in this movie are clones?

[00:57:40] [SPEAKER_02]: They can't all be but certainly they were like the base right of the storm troopers.

[00:57:44] [SPEAKER_03]: And then you think they died out and they just hired other people.

[00:57:47] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah because they get old.

[00:57:48] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh right okay.

[00:57:49] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah they get old.

[00:57:50] [SPEAKER_02]: But can they keep cloning or they just had one run, one batch.

[00:57:53] [SPEAKER_02]: I think it's like you can make it's just people start enlisting.

[00:57:56] [SPEAKER_02]: I think it's supposed to be a mix but it's not clear.

[00:57:59] [SPEAKER_02]: Because when you hear their voices they're not Boba Fett or Jango Fett.

[00:58:04] [SPEAKER_02]: But when you hear Jango, Boba's voice it's Tamarama.

[00:58:07] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah it's very unclear.

[00:58:09] [SPEAKER_02]: So we watch the Blue Rays guys I'm sorry.

[00:58:12] [SPEAKER_02]: But check out this scene though where you're on the Empire on the super star destroyer.

[00:58:18] [SPEAKER_02]: There's like a massive star destroyer now.

[00:58:20] [SPEAKER_02]: And this one guy is like bounty hunters gross.

[00:58:24] [SPEAKER_02]: And like the Empire has just been white guys until now.

[00:58:28] [SPEAKER_02]: Now there are like eight crazy looking people.

[00:58:30] [SPEAKER_02]: A lizard in a yellow jumpsuit.

[00:58:33] [SPEAKER_02]: There's like a guy who just looks like a bunch of blasters that have been tied together.

[00:58:38] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah he's like a Shuman gun.

[00:58:41] [SPEAKER_02]: There's one dude.

[00:58:42] [SPEAKER_02]: They're kind of like Ben's Jedi creation.

[00:58:45] [SPEAKER_03]: There's a fat dude with a bunch of like paper towels around his head.

[00:58:48] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah I'm for dengar is that dengar?

[00:58:52] [SPEAKER_03]: There's like a bug dude named Zuckus.

[00:58:55] [SPEAKER_02]: They are the coolest.

[00:58:56] [SPEAKER_02]: They're the best.

[00:58:57] [SPEAKER_02]: But only one of them like Vader's going around being like blah blah blah and then he goes up

[00:59:03] [SPEAKER_02]: to Boba Fett and he says no disintegrations and Boba Fett's like as you wish and you're

[00:59:07] [SPEAKER_02]: like whoa this guy must be so crazy that Darth Vader has to be like take it down a notch.

[00:59:14] [SPEAKER_03]: I mean he watched his dad be murdered in front of him.

[00:59:17] [SPEAKER_03]: Jesus Christ.

[00:59:18] [SPEAKER_03]: But weird to like...

[00:59:21] [SPEAKER_03]: Sorry I just love that scene.

[00:59:23] [SPEAKER_03]: It does feel weird to make that character the bounty hunter be the grown up version of Boba

[00:59:27] [SPEAKER_03]: Fett because it feels like it in no way otherwise ties into the little boy Boba Fett.

[00:59:32] [SPEAKER_03]: You know what it's like?

[00:59:33] [SPEAKER_03]: There's no narrative gain from that being the same person.

[00:59:36] [SPEAKER_03]: Like why not make it a new character?

[00:59:37] [SPEAKER_03]: Absolutely.

[00:59:38] [SPEAKER_02]: But nonetheless he's pretty cool and we've seen him he's tracking.

[00:59:42] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:59:42] [SPEAKER_02]: Han that's why I mentioned this.

[00:59:43] [SPEAKER_02]: His ship is awesome.

[00:59:44] [SPEAKER_02]: He's got this awesome ship.

[00:59:45] [SPEAKER_02]: It's called the slave wand.

[00:59:46] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh.

[00:59:48] [SPEAKER_02]: So anyway on Cloud City you know...

[00:59:53] [SPEAKER_02]: There's the slave too.

[00:59:54] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah anyway.

[00:59:54] [SPEAKER_02]: I think it's like one slave one.

[00:59:55] [SPEAKER_02]: They get rum...

[00:59:56] [SPEAKER_02]: The reveal right?

[00:59:58] [SPEAKER_02]: That's a really good one.

[00:59:58] [SPEAKER_02]: They get rumboldware.

[00:59:59] [SPEAKER_02]: It's so cool where Lando is like yeah anyway I think everything's gonna be great for me

[01:00:03] [SPEAKER_02]: because I just made this new deal and Hanson was like oh yeah and then they open the

[01:00:06] [SPEAKER_02]: door invaders there and he's like I'll take your gun.

[01:00:09] [SPEAKER_02]: Right.

[01:00:09] [SPEAKER_02]: He blocks his laser fire with his hand.

[01:00:11] [SPEAKER_02]: And Lando was like yeah the deal I made was...

[01:00:13] [SPEAKER_02]: And he's like please join us for dinner.

[01:00:15] [SPEAKER_02]: And the door shuts.

[01:00:18] [SPEAKER_03]: And Lando's like the deal I made was Empire is not gonna fuck with me if I give you to them.

[01:00:24] [SPEAKER_02]: It's solo.

[01:00:25] [SPEAKER_02]: It's Han Solo being given up.

[01:00:27] [SPEAKER_02]: And technically he's being given up to Boba Fett for Jabba the Hutt and he's just being

[01:00:32] [SPEAKER_02]: tortured in the meantime to sort of lure Luke.

[01:00:34] [SPEAKER_02]: Get the information out.

[01:00:35] [SPEAKER_02]: And so there's this...

[01:00:37] [SPEAKER_02]: It's kind of complicated but it's all very simply delivered where Hans is gonna get

[01:00:41] [SPEAKER_02]: frozen in carbonite as this like test for Luke who's then gonna be presented to the Emperor

[01:00:47] [SPEAKER_03]: I guess in carbonite.

[01:00:49] [SPEAKER_03]: It's a way to incapacitate someone but not kill them but also make them to a trophy.

[01:00:54] [SPEAKER_03]: And they keep on saying we don't know if the process is gonna work if he can survive

[01:00:57] [SPEAKER_03]: We don't know if he's gonna survive it.

[01:00:59] [SPEAKER_03]: If he dies whatever then we still got a cool trophy.

[01:01:01] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah right and then he'll compensate Boba for fucking up Jabba's plan.

[01:01:08] [SPEAKER_02]: But it's like a pure cedar cast of like...

[01:01:11] [SPEAKER_02]: As the movie is reaching its conclusion.

[01:01:13] [SPEAKER_02]: As Luke is coming back, you know he's leaving.

[01:01:16] [SPEAKER_02]: We should say he leaves Dagobah and Yoda's...

[01:01:20] [SPEAKER_02]: Sorry Obi-Wan says that boy's our last hope and Yoda says there's another which you know...

[01:01:24] [SPEAKER_02]: Well we know I don't understand why they're being so vague.

[01:01:27] [SPEAKER_02]: Why are they being around the bush?

[01:01:28] [SPEAKER_03]: And also oh we forgot the biggest thing.

[01:01:30] [SPEAKER_03]: Early in the movie when Han is playing with Leia and he's like you know you like

[01:01:33] [SPEAKER_03]: me so much she's like maybe you don't know anything about women and she fucking

[01:01:36] [SPEAKER_03]: trips, smooches Luke.

[01:01:38] [SPEAKER_03]: And there's like there's the kiss moment.

[01:01:39] [SPEAKER_03]: And Luke's like alright he like puts his hands behind his back.

[01:01:42] [SPEAKER_03]: He puts his hands behind his back like he's Mark Harmon in summer school.

[01:01:46] [SPEAKER_03]: He puts on a Hawaiian shirt and sunglasses and he cracks open up blue.

[01:01:48] [SPEAKER_02]: Shout out to Chase Mitchell we got another Mark Harmon in summer school reference.

[01:01:52] [SPEAKER_03]: I did that for Chase.

[01:01:53] [SPEAKER_03]: I did Chase.

[01:01:54] [SPEAKER_03]: But there's also the moment where they're like swinging across the divide

[01:01:57] [SPEAKER_03]: and like there's a moment at the end of A New Hope where she gets on the trophy

[01:02:00] [SPEAKER_03]: and they start like winking at each other.

[01:02:01] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh I know it's weird.

[01:02:02] [SPEAKER_03]: It's weird how much he keeps on hammering this because all of us watching this movie

[01:02:06] [SPEAKER_03]: know that they're brother and sister.

[01:02:08] [SPEAKER_03]: I hate bits.

[01:02:09] [SPEAKER_03]: Anyway, weird.

[01:02:12] [SPEAKER_02]: So but then come on there's the best scene in the film apart from the bounty hunter scene

[01:02:16] [SPEAKER_02]: is the carbonite scene.

[01:02:19] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[01:02:19] [SPEAKER_02]: Like yeah I'm obsessed with it.

[01:02:21] [SPEAKER_02]: They designed this room that is like the best lit room in the history of cinema.

[01:02:26] [SPEAKER_02]: And he's got the coolest set ever.

[01:02:27] [SPEAKER_03]: These little creatures the ugnots who are like the mechanics working the machine.

[01:02:31] [SPEAKER_03]: And they have like smocks on and like gloves.

[01:02:33] [SPEAKER_02]: This is post alien and alien comes out between A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back.

[01:02:39] [SPEAKER_02]: And like there is that weird sort of industrial feeling to it.

[01:02:42] [SPEAKER_02]: That's a little more like you know alien-y.

[01:02:44] [SPEAKER_02]: And it's all orange and blue lights.

[01:02:47] [SPEAKER_02]: Is it on 78 or 79?

[01:02:49] [SPEAKER_02]: I think it's 79.

[01:02:51] [SPEAKER_02]: Alien comes out in 1970.

[01:02:54] [SPEAKER_02]: So and Han's getting frozen.

[01:02:57] [SPEAKER_02]: It's so messed up.

[01:02:58] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh and the best exchange.

[01:02:59] [SPEAKER_02]: This is what I'm leading up to man.

[01:03:02] [SPEAKER_02]: So Han is like this.

[01:03:02] [SPEAKER_03]: Leia finally is like I love you.

[01:03:05] [SPEAKER_03]: And Han just goes I know.

[01:03:09] [SPEAKER_03]: Which they came up with on set.

[01:03:10] [SPEAKER_03]: And the music swells.

[01:03:12] [SPEAKER_03]: It's this beautiful John Williams thing.

[01:03:15] [SPEAKER_03]: He gets like lowered down and then they like freeze him.

[01:03:19] [SPEAKER_03]: And he goes like...

[01:03:22] [SPEAKER_03]: This movie is better than A New Hope.

[01:03:23] [SPEAKER_03]: I like A New Hope more.

[01:03:25] [SPEAKER_03]: Well I'm not saying this at any insult to this film.

[01:03:28] [SPEAKER_03]: So good.

[01:03:29] [SPEAKER_03]: I like the newness of A New Hope.

[01:03:30] [SPEAKER_03]: And the shocker shiner gets of the carbonite like is like up.

[01:03:36] [SPEAKER_02]: And it gets like slammed down.

[01:03:38] [SPEAKER_02]: And you see Han's like sort of pained like...

[01:03:41] [SPEAKER_02]: He looks so pained.

[01:03:42] [SPEAKER_02]: But then he's alive.

[01:03:45] [SPEAKER_02]: It's so so crazy.

[01:03:46] [SPEAKER_02]: And Leia just looks so sad.

[01:03:49] [SPEAKER_02]: She loves that man.

[01:03:50] [SPEAKER_02]: So Han's out.

[01:03:52] [SPEAKER_02]: Boba takes him away.

[01:03:53] [SPEAKER_02]: Leia and Chewbacca are like being in a be kept prisoner maybe.

[01:03:56] [SPEAKER_02]: But then Vader's like no I'm gonna take them too.

[01:03:59] [SPEAKER_02]: Lando's really mad.

[01:04:00] [SPEAKER_02]: He wakes up his robot butler.

[01:04:02] [SPEAKER_02]: Lobot.

[01:04:03] [SPEAKER_02]: He's the best.

[01:04:05] [SPEAKER_02]: And they escape on the Millennium Falcon.

[01:04:07] [SPEAKER_02]: After a bunch of sort of like...

[01:04:08] [SPEAKER_03]: He's like let me take the hostages and then once he's leading them down the hall

[01:04:12] [SPEAKER_03]: has his guys come and shoot at the troopers.

[01:04:16] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, and like a bunch of chaos happens.

[01:04:17] [SPEAKER_03]: It turns out Lando...

[01:04:18] [SPEAKER_03]: Lando cause like they yell at Lando when he reveals that he's turned on him.

[01:04:21] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh they're wearing that at him. Chewbacca tries to strangle him.

[01:04:23] [SPEAKER_03]: And he's like fuck you Lando.

[01:04:25] [SPEAKER_03]: Like we trusted you.

[01:04:26] [SPEAKER_03]: And you see it in his eyes that he was like maybe for once

[01:04:28] [SPEAKER_03]: I have to stop thinking just about myself and care about others.

[01:04:30] [SPEAKER_03]: Which is what happened to Han and look what happened to Han.

[01:04:32] [SPEAKER_03]: He gained a heart you know?

[01:04:34] [SPEAKER_03]: Han was the same way he was hard...

[01:04:35] [SPEAKER_02]: So it's kind of like 50-50.

[01:04:38] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah Lando was like you know but in the words of Tom Hanks in Bridges Pies

[01:04:45] [SPEAKER_03]: It doesn't matter you know what you did.

[01:04:48] [SPEAKER_03]: It's like can you go to sleep at night with a clear conscience?

[01:04:50] [SPEAKER_03]: No of course.

[01:04:51] [SPEAKER_03]: And so Lando immediately flips back.

[01:04:54] [SPEAKER_03]: What'd I say?

[01:04:54] [SPEAKER_03]: No I'm just agreeing.

[01:04:56] [SPEAKER_03]: It's Masterpiece, my third favorite of the year.

[01:05:00] [SPEAKER_03]: My first two are Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back.

[01:05:02] [SPEAKER_03]: Which I'm counting as films this year because we just saw them.

[01:05:07] [SPEAKER_03]: Lando like almost immediately flips it on him.

[01:05:09] [SPEAKER_03]: I was like I'm gonna make it my mission to get the rest of my friends out to save.

[01:05:13] [SPEAKER_02]: He has to change her heart. It's a little quick but you know...

[01:05:16] [SPEAKER_02]: It makes sense.

[01:05:18] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[01:05:18] [SPEAKER_02]: Kind of doesn't make sense that he betrays them.

[01:05:21] [SPEAKER_02]: But you feel like he's immediately once Vader shows up

[01:05:24] [SPEAKER_02]: he's immediately just like what am I doing?

[01:05:27] [SPEAKER_03]: He also made the decision to betray them.

[01:05:29] [SPEAKER_03]: All this for a Cloud City?

[01:05:30] [SPEAKER_03]: He made the decision to betray them before he saw them again.

[01:05:33] [SPEAKER_03]: You know?

[01:05:34] [SPEAKER_03]: Like you can decide like okay I'm gonna break up with this person.

[01:05:36] [SPEAKER_03]: You gotta meet up with him and it's hard when you're in person to do those things.

[01:05:40] [SPEAKER_03]: So I think he already had the pangs of regret before he actually did the handoff

[01:05:43] [SPEAKER_03]: and immediately is like I gotta make this right.

[01:05:47] [SPEAKER_03]: And also I mean...

[01:05:49] [SPEAKER_02]: The Cloud City is just cool.

[01:05:50] [SPEAKER_02]: Can we just say it's a really cool idea.

[01:05:52] [SPEAKER_02]: It looks so cool.

[01:05:53] [SPEAKER_02]: Another great design element.

[01:05:54] [SPEAKER_02]: You've got Hoth, you've got Dagobah and you've got this Cloud City.

[01:05:58] [SPEAKER_02]: And it is the coolest setting for the best lightsaber fight ever.

[01:06:03] [SPEAKER_02]: Luke shows up

[01:06:05] [SPEAKER_02]: and he's kind of led almost

[01:06:07] [SPEAKER_02]: to the Carbonite Chamber.

[01:06:09] [SPEAKER_02]: Weirdly, yeah.

[01:06:10] [SPEAKER_02]: And like he sees Leia briefly and she's trying to tell him it's a trap but he doesn't figure it out.

[01:06:14] [SPEAKER_02]: There's just awesome scene there when that's happening.

[01:06:18] [SPEAKER_02]: Where Lando is like almost like

[01:06:19] [SPEAKER_02]: let me get a look at this motherfucker.

[01:06:21] [SPEAKER_02]: You know like you can tell he's like

[01:06:22] [SPEAKER_02]: this is the guy everyone's so obsessed with.

[01:06:24] [SPEAKER_02]: Vader wants this guy so bad.

[01:06:26] [SPEAKER_02]: This Skywalker guy, whoever he is.

[01:06:28] [SPEAKER_02]: And you get like there's just a brief shot of him like kind of trying to crane his neck to look at Luke

[01:06:32] [SPEAKER_02]: because he's like you know going deeper into Cloud City.

[01:06:35] [SPEAKER_02]: He's like the Jennifer Lawrence of this universe.

[01:06:37] [SPEAKER_02]: He's the it guy.

[01:06:38] [SPEAKER_02]: Everyone wants a piece.

[01:06:39] [SPEAKER_02]: It's just like the way it all dovetails is so nice.

[01:06:43] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh it's a tight movie.

[01:06:44] [SPEAKER_02]: And then he has like Vader has a showdown with him

[01:06:48] [SPEAKER_02]: where Vader is just toying with him.

[01:06:50] [SPEAKER_02]: And Vader doesn't

[01:06:52] [SPEAKER_02]: no he now knows.

[01:06:53] [SPEAKER_02]: He now knows that this is his son.

[01:06:55] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah he's been referred to as Luke Skywalker to his face.

[01:06:58] [SPEAKER_03]: He doesn't know but I mean you gotta

[01:07:00] [SPEAKER_03]: you gotta fucking you know.

[01:07:01] [SPEAKER_02]: He's put the pieces together off screen.

[01:07:04] [SPEAKER_03]: Which is good because we already know.

[01:07:07] [SPEAKER_03]: We already know.

[01:07:07] [SPEAKER_03]: I don't understand why they're dicking around this much.

[01:07:09] [SPEAKER_03]: I don't hold against a movie but like we all know

[01:07:11] [SPEAKER_03]: why are you like holding this off like it's some big surprise.

[01:07:14] [SPEAKER_03]: We've all watched the movies in the order that you intended us to watch them.

[01:07:17] [SPEAKER_03]: Drew Griffin we've said it multiple times at this point.

[01:07:19] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm gonna kill you.

[01:07:20] [SPEAKER_02]: It's not a surprise. No Bits.

[01:07:22] [SPEAKER_02]: So no Bits. Hate Bits. Pro-Smits.

[01:07:24] [SPEAKER_02]: No Smits but still Pro-Smits.

[01:07:27] [SPEAKER_02]: No Smits ship. Still Pro-Smits ship.

[01:07:30] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[01:07:31] [SPEAKER_02]: Vader what I like about this fight is like

[01:07:33] [SPEAKER_02]: Vader's initially kind of like toying with him

[01:07:36] [SPEAKER_02]: and kind of just trying to freeze him

[01:07:37] [SPEAKER_02]: and he's like you're not that great.

[01:07:39] [SPEAKER_02]: And then Luke kind of shows up for this fight.

[01:07:41] [SPEAKER_02]: He's pretty good.

[01:07:42] [SPEAKER_02]: And Vader is like oh check you out.

[01:07:45] [SPEAKER_02]: Interesting.

[01:07:46] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. And then I think that's when Vader's like alright.

[01:07:49] [SPEAKER_03]: Maybe me and you. Me and you.

[01:07:52] [SPEAKER_03]: Come to papa. And Luke's like what do you mean come to papa?

[01:07:55] [SPEAKER_02]: Because he, Vader, what I like is Vader's kind of just toying.

[01:07:58] [SPEAKER_02]: Like I keep saying it but then he kind of turns it on.

[01:08:01] [SPEAKER_02]: They have this like crazy fight.

[01:08:02] [SPEAKER_02]: Vader throws shit at him.

[01:08:04] [SPEAKER_02]: And then they end up on this like big like

[01:08:06] [SPEAKER_02]: walkway in this like cavernous room.

[01:08:09] [SPEAKER_02]: Like huge wind tunnel thing.

[01:08:11] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah right.

[01:08:12] [SPEAKER_02]: It's all the mining operation I guess is what's

[01:08:14] [SPEAKER_02]: what they're fighting the kind of bowels

[01:08:16] [SPEAKER_02]: of this like mining operation.

[01:08:17] [SPEAKER_02]: And Vader is like. And finally Vader just turns it on

[01:08:20] [SPEAKER_03]: and takes him to town and chops his armor.

[01:08:23] [SPEAKER_03]: Right. He chops off his hand.

[01:08:24] [SPEAKER_03]: Luke is like hanging at the edge of this thing.

[01:08:26] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah. And he's just ruined.

[01:08:28] [SPEAKER_03]: Right. And like right above the like the gulf

[01:08:30] [SPEAKER_03]: like this huge wind tunnel.

[01:08:32] [SPEAKER_03]: And he's like come on.

[01:08:35] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. He's like join me.

[01:08:36] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. Come on. And we'll take down the emperor.

[01:08:38] [SPEAKER_02]: Come on. And he looks like

[01:08:40] [SPEAKER_02]: Obi-Wan never told you what happened to your father.

[01:08:43] [SPEAKER_03]: And he's like he told me enough.

[01:08:44] [SPEAKER_03]: He told me that you killed him.

[01:08:45] [SPEAKER_03]: And he's like no I'm your dad.

[01:08:47] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah he's like he says it in exactly that time.

[01:08:49] [SPEAKER_02]: He's like buddy I'm your father.

[01:08:51] [SPEAKER_02]: No I'm your father.

[01:08:53] [SPEAKER_02]: And Luke you know I think this is why they save it

[01:08:56] [SPEAKER_02]: because the reveal is pretty crucial to Luke's

[01:08:58] [SPEAKER_02]: like emotional.

[01:08:59] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah just not to us the audience at all.

[01:09:00] [SPEAKER_02]: This is rock bottom. Yes.

[01:09:01] [SPEAKER_02]: And he's just like how can this be true but he

[01:09:04] [SPEAKER_03]: kind of knows.

[01:09:06] [SPEAKER_03]: I think he kind of knew deep down.

[01:09:07] [SPEAKER_03]: And Vader says it.

[01:09:09] [SPEAKER_03]: He says like look in your heart you know it to be true.

[01:09:11] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah he's just like no.

[01:09:13] [SPEAKER_03]: Screaming. I will never join you.

[01:09:16] [SPEAKER_03]: And he commits suicide. He jumps down.

[01:09:18] [SPEAKER_03]: Right. And he falls out the bottom of the

[01:09:20] [SPEAKER_03]: ship like the garbage chute and then just

[01:09:22] [SPEAKER_03]: holds on to this like antenna.

[01:09:24] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah and it's a little goofy.

[01:09:25] [SPEAKER_02]: Weather vane. The only reason I think this

[01:09:27] [SPEAKER_02]: works is because he's rescued by Leia's

[01:09:30] [SPEAKER_02]: own kind of recognition of him.

[01:09:31] [SPEAKER_03]: He's there and he's like Obi-Wan help me

[01:09:33] [SPEAKER_03]: and like nothing. Which is pretty useless.

[01:09:34] [SPEAKER_03]: Come on Luke he's a ghost. Right and then he just goes like

[01:09:37] [SPEAKER_03]: Leia. And it cuts to

[01:09:38] [SPEAKER_03]: a great shot of Carrie Fisher.

[01:09:40] [SPEAKER_03]: She plays this beat so perfectly and goes up

[01:09:42] [SPEAKER_03]: and she goes I know where Luke is. Yeah she's like

[01:09:44] [SPEAKER_03]: we gotta go. And Lando I love

[01:09:46] [SPEAKER_03]: Lando's like the fuck are you talking about.

[01:09:49] [SPEAKER_03]: We just left that place. We're like chased by

[01:09:50] [SPEAKER_03]: you know tie fighters. You want us to meet

[01:09:53] [SPEAKER_03]: the guys who are trying to kill us halfway?

[01:09:55] [SPEAKER_03]: And she's like go right here

[01:09:56] [SPEAKER_03]: and I love he goes there and he's like Jesus

[01:09:58] [SPEAKER_03]: he's hanging off the fucking thing.

[01:10:01] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah it's pretty cool. No one like questions how

[01:10:03] [SPEAKER_03]: she knew. And then no

[01:10:05] [SPEAKER_02]: no one really talks about it but then finally

[01:10:08] [SPEAKER_02]: finally

[01:10:09] [SPEAKER_02]: R2 turns on the fucking

[01:10:11] [SPEAKER_02]: hyperdrive and they go it's such a good moment.

[01:10:13] [SPEAKER_02]: So good. And

[01:10:15] [SPEAKER_02]: Lando's like they fix the hyperdrive.

[01:10:17] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. And then of course it's still busted.

[01:10:19] [SPEAKER_03]: The end this movie Luke is

[01:10:21] [SPEAKER_03]: He's like he's on my fault I love that.

[01:10:22] [SPEAKER_03]: Billy Dooley was great in this movie. He's great in this movie.

[01:10:25] [SPEAKER_03]: Luke gets a new hand

[01:10:26] [SPEAKER_03]: it looks a lot more advanced than Anakin's hand.

[01:10:28] [SPEAKER_03]: It's got like prosthetic flesh. Yeah it's not like

[01:10:30] [SPEAKER_02]: a golden like you know

[01:10:32] [SPEAKER_02]: Frankenstein hand it's a real hand. No you see the inner workings

[01:10:34] [SPEAKER_02]: but then it looks like a mechanical

[01:10:36] [SPEAKER_02]: tendons. Me and Griffin are doing like an exact

[01:10:39] [SPEAKER_02]: Ben's just watching us

[01:10:40] [SPEAKER_02]: like tickle imaginary balls.

[01:10:42] [SPEAKER_03]: We're fondling balls. That's what it looks

[01:10:44] [SPEAKER_03]: like but they give him a new

[01:10:46] [SPEAKER_03]: hand and like the last moment of this

[01:10:48] [SPEAKER_03]: film is like

[01:10:51] [SPEAKER_03]: Lando

[01:10:52] [SPEAKER_03]: and Chewbacca

[01:10:53] [SPEAKER_03]: go off on the Malayan Falcon and try to

[01:10:56] [SPEAKER_03]: rescue Han. You know

[01:10:58] [SPEAKER_03]: and Luke

[01:10:59] [SPEAKER_03]: and Leia and C-3P on R2D2 stand

[01:11:02] [SPEAKER_03]: on like this

[01:11:03] [SPEAKER_03]: medical ship. Right but like the

[01:11:05] [SPEAKER_03]: space balcony. They're watching sort of like

[01:11:08] [SPEAKER_02]: these like fleets

[01:11:10] [SPEAKER_02]: of rebels sort of leaving. Yeah.

[01:11:12] [SPEAKER_02]: Looking out at a galaxy. And they look

[01:11:14] [SPEAKER_03]: to each other and they don't know what the future holds anymore.

[01:11:16] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah it's a weird ending.

[01:11:17] [SPEAKER_03]: It's like it's not a downer but it's like

[01:11:19] [SPEAKER_03]: it's kind of bleak because it's just like there's no

[01:11:22] [SPEAKER_03]: sense of... It's a little bleak

[01:11:24] [SPEAKER_02]: It's a real cliffhanger. It's a little

[01:11:26] [SPEAKER_02]: unsatisfying as a cliffhanger I would say

[01:11:27] [SPEAKER_02]: where it's like okay

[01:11:29] [SPEAKER_02]: threads are dangling. Yeah.

[01:11:31] [SPEAKER_02]: That's the only hit on the movie. But it's an interesting

[01:11:33] [SPEAKER_03]: downer. I mean you call the movie The Empire Strikes Back

[01:11:36] [SPEAKER_03]: yeah lives up to the title

[01:11:37] [SPEAKER_03]: they struck back motherfucker

[01:11:39] [SPEAKER_03]: and it's not like oh they struck back and then we beat them

[01:11:41] [SPEAKER_03]: it's like you gotta wait till the next movie. You gotta wait until the Jedi's

[01:11:43] [SPEAKER_03]: return. Right. To see if they pull

[01:11:45] [SPEAKER_03]: it off.

[01:11:47] [SPEAKER_03]: Great movie. Five stars

[01:11:49] [SPEAKER_03]: would watch again. Yeah.

[01:11:51] [SPEAKER_00]: Alright you want to do a quick performance review? Oh shit.

[01:11:54] [SPEAKER_03]: Let's do it. I've been holding in a poop this entire time

[01:11:56] [SPEAKER_03]: so we gotta do this really quick. Alright

[01:11:57] [SPEAKER_00]: Mark Hamill. Plus

[01:11:59] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah hardcore. Harrison Ford

[01:12:02] [SPEAKER_03]: Thumbs Up. Number one of all time

[01:12:05] [SPEAKER_03]: MVP

[01:12:06] [SPEAKER_00]: Carrie Fisher. Thumbs Up

[01:12:08] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah Hamils are most improved

[01:12:10] [SPEAKER_03]: Fords are MVP. Fisher's great

[01:12:12] [SPEAKER_03]: Billy D. Incredible

[01:12:13] [SPEAKER_03]: Billy D. A. Plus Williams

[01:12:16] [SPEAKER_03]: More like Billy A. Williams

[01:12:18] [SPEAKER_00]: That was the... That should have been

[01:12:20] [SPEAKER_00]: the first one. Sorry

[01:12:21] [SPEAKER_00]: Anthony Daniels. Plus

[01:12:23] [SPEAKER_02]: Yes he's great. He's hilarious in this movie. More like A plus

[01:12:25] [SPEAKER_00]: than he Daniels. Alright carry on.

[01:12:27] [SPEAKER_00]: Uh David Prouse. Yeah

[01:12:29] [SPEAKER_03]: Good job buddy. Yeah they're fighting

[01:12:31] [SPEAKER_03]: Amazing. Love it. Yeah. Peter Mayhew

[01:12:34] [SPEAKER_03]: Love him. Mm-hmm

[01:12:35] [SPEAKER_00]: Kenny Baker. Love him. Frank Oz

[01:12:37] [SPEAKER_00]: Pass. Killing it. Hardcore.

[01:12:40] [SPEAKER_00]: Alleghenous. Pass. Yeah

[01:12:41] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah he's fine. He does good job. Jeremy Bullock

[01:12:44] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh Boba Fett

[01:12:45] [SPEAKER_03]: Now do you know who else this guy is?

[01:12:47] [SPEAKER_03]: Who else is this guy? He's the salty old

[01:12:49] [SPEAKER_03]: space dog. Hell yeah bro

[01:12:51] [SPEAKER_00]: Oh shit no way. Yeah. Yeah.

[01:12:54] [SPEAKER_02]: That's awesome. Yeah I hope you're listening Chris.

[01:12:56] [SPEAKER_02]: We should have Chris listen to this episode.

[01:12:58] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. The salty old space dog

[01:12:59] [SPEAKER_03]: We should show up at his front door with

[01:13:01] [SPEAKER_03]: two earbuds and make him listen to this episode

[01:13:03] [SPEAKER_03]: Chris fucking yeah. Salty old space dog

[01:13:05] [SPEAKER_03]: Uh gives two great performances

[01:13:07] [SPEAKER_03]: across this franchise. Love it. Um

[01:13:10] [SPEAKER_03]: Uh Piat Nozzle

[01:13:11] [SPEAKER_03]: Both get passes. Oh. John Radzenberger

[01:13:13] [SPEAKER_02]: gets a pass. Lover, voice, Clive

[01:13:16] [SPEAKER_02]: Rivell. Clive Rivell played

[01:13:17] [SPEAKER_02]: the emperor in the original cut. Yes that

[01:13:19] [SPEAKER_02]: was dubbed over by E. Mcdermid.

[01:13:21] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah in the original cut the emperor is played by

[01:13:23] [SPEAKER_03]: an orangutan. No it's played by a lady

[01:13:25] [SPEAKER_03]: and they superimpose orangutan eyes

[01:13:28] [SPEAKER_03]: It's crazy. Yeah it was

[01:13:29] [SPEAKER_03]: Rick Baker's wife. But they hadn't cast

[01:13:31] [SPEAKER_03]: like um E. Mcdermid

[01:13:33] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah but we're watching George's quote unquote

[01:13:35] [SPEAKER_03]: finished versions of the movie. Yep

[01:13:38] [SPEAKER_03]: Everyone gets a pass. There's no bad performances

[01:13:39] [SPEAKER_00]: Wow. Yeah.

[01:13:41] [SPEAKER_03]: Dengar gets a hard pass. Love it. I G88

[01:13:43] [SPEAKER_03]: Killing it. Oh god so cool
